Re: K-1 vs K-1 Mark II

2024-02-23 Thread lrc
I think the differences are pretty subtle. As I understand it the mk ii had
lower noise at higher iso by doing some processing on the raw that reduces
detail.
It's supposed to have better focusing with longer lenses.

I think that the differences only matter in specific use cases

Where I have been using live view most recently is with a 10x neutral
density filter. It is near impossible to see through it in the viewfinder,
and I find it under meters by 3 or 4 stops. But with live view it can see
through and the metering is fine. Only issue then is the LCD screen isnt'
so bright and can be hard to see in bright sunlight where I'm most likely
to use such a filter. So I kind of hope the k3 LCD is brighter, or lacking
that use the sync app to see live view.

I find that the articulated screen on my K-1 is nice, but there haven’t been
many situations (I can’t think of any off hand) where I could not have gotten
by with just the live view. It just makes it a little bit more comfortable,
but it’s not as big of a difference as live view or not.

K3 Mark III

2021-11-16 Thread Corey Leopold
So I just ordered one, with a free battery grip, had been thinking for a
while about pulling the trigger and upgrading from my now pretty old K5,
and saw that they had early Black Friday specials going on with the free
grip and couldn't resist.

I know an articulated screen is one of the "missing" features I'm sure I
can make do without it, but I noticed that in theory one can see the live
view and trigger the shutter from the image sync app on their phone, seems
like that could solve 90% of the use cases an articulated screen does
without the added physical complexity on the camera.

As long as I have astrotracer in the K-1, I don’t *need* it in any other
bodies, assuming of course the K-1 doesn’t crap out again.
The K-1 is my wide angle and low light body, though it would be interesting to
see how the 3-3 compares in low light performance at the same angle of view,
with available lenses. Unless something radically changes in my life in the
near future, I’m afraid the comparisons between the two will remain purely
hypothetical on my part.
My guess is that the new 3-3 will be the best Pentax available for birding
and/or sports. I sincerely hope they learned the lesson of the K-1 lack of
buffer and low bus speed and brought the new camera’s performance into the 21st

GPS and flip-screen are both nice-to-have for me, since I will mostly be using
the camera
alongside my trusty K1, which is the onoy 'real' and more or less up to date
cam I have now
after passing my K3 on to my son.

And since I plan to go on a two-week safari next year (october, Botswana)
this will be a perfect backup-cam as well as long-lens rig (with the 150-450)

I hope AF speed and reliability have improved significantly ;-)

It all depends on what you want to use the camera for. For me, AF is important.
I'm sure it's going to have better AF than a K-5; the question is how much
better.

A year ago (was it really that long ago? How time flies!) I took a trip to
Austin to watch the inaugural Indycar race at Circuit of the Americas.
I never like relying on just a single body on a trip (and having two bodies
means you can have two different focal lengths ready at all times), so for
this trip I borrowed Larry's K-3 to go along with my K-5. After reviewing
the first day's shooting it was apparent that The K-3 was doing a better
job of focus tracking - with comparable shots with the same lens mounted I
had noticeably more out-of-focus shots with the K-5 than with the K-3.
There was still room for improvement; I'm waiting for reports on just how
much better the K3-III is before deciding whether I'm tempted (although
the alternative I'm considering - going lightweight with an OM-D system -
is less attractive now in the light of the Olympus name getting dropped).

Other things that interest me are the 12fps continuous shooting frame rate
(with a 32 frame buffer), dual memory card slots, and wireless/bluetooth.
I personally don't care about video, so the limitation of 4K to 30 fps
isn't a problem for me, but I can see it would be a problem for others.

That doesn't do anything about the lack of a flippy screen, as I

Especially the money - I've been making up the major part of "the

I think the 10-year run was pretty damn good, though.

I didn’t bother as the upgrade wasn’t giving me anything I especially care
about. The brouhaha about the noise reduction is, IMHO, an overreaction.
The very thorough test that Pentax Forums did showed that noise was
reduced, detail wasn’t. The test that DPR did showed the opposite, but DPR
has a long history of not being able to run a test without fucking
something up.
If you do a lot of shooting at higher ISOs the upgrade would be a good
thing.

I was thinking about that just the other day (Monday in fact). Isn't it
getting close to the end of the period Ricoh were offering the upgrade?

I hope someone who has had the upgrade done & has had a chance to

the upgrade will share so that some of us who are still on the fence

Re: K-1 Mark II Upgrade?

2018-10-25 Thread jtainter
Paul, the main controversy concerns the fact that Pentax added unavoidable,
baked in noise reduction, apparently kicking in at ISO 640. It cannot be turned
off. Some people are bothered by the resulting images being softened a little,
some people are bothered by it in principal, some people don't mind it, and
some people don't notice it. I avoided the Mark II upgrade largely because of
this. I shoot a lot at higher ISO settings. Dpreview dinged Pentax for it, but
the camera got a better review at Pentax Forums.

Some people report better AF.

Another reason why I avoided it is because I would have had to recalibrate all
my lenses for focus accuracy.

Battery life isn’t a factor for me. I always shoot with the grip installed and
have never come close to depleting the batteries. I asked before about the
resulting improvement but got no answer here. It may be too late for the
upgrade now. Should have asked on Pentax Forum, but I hate navigating that
site. I’ll call the provider, but still hope to hear from someone about any
improvement in performance.

The period ended last month; but check for an extension if you want to
do the upgrade.
Around here (Europe, the upgrade done by the Hamburg service) I was
told that I had to register for the upgrade until the end of
September, but the upgrade itself will be done later - and they're
still waiting for another batch of K1 II mainboards.

FWIW, the download page is still functional. I'm getting ready to install
PhotoshopCS 6 on my "new" laptop, so I thought I might as well see if I can
download the collection to plugin to that.

The only one I ever really use is ColorEFEX Pro, but I guess as long as it's
still available, it's better to have it than not. Anyway, the price is right.

Re: no mas mark

2016-05-16 Thread John

If I were going to be transgender, I'd have to become Joan. But I'm not.

Straight, but not narrow, that's me ... "different strokes for different
folks" and all that.

For all the attention North Carolina's HB2 law has gotten for who gets
to use what bathroom, that's not the worst part of the law. There's
other parts of the law that haven't really gotten the attention it
deserves. Like closing off state courts to discrimination complaints
from everyone, regardless of race, creed, gender, sexual orientation,
national origin, age, religious affiliation ... it's Jim Crow on steroids.

There is one other John in my Tuesday night group. No Larrys ... no
Darrel or other brother Darrel. We've got a Donald (went by Don even
before "The Donald" burst upon the scene), two Richards (Rich & Doc); a
Cathy, a Kathy, a Kathryn & a Kathleen.

If any of them is LGBT, I don't know about it and care even less. Not my
bag.

that doesn't work; i was one of three steves in 3rd grade; they decided
to call me the surname of my mother's then-boyfriend

Well, hopefully he had a cool surname.

Re: no mas mark

2016-05-15 Thread John
You should come to my Tuesday night folk circle where we have Big Dave,
Little Dave, Dave A, Dave B (who doesn't attend that often anymore),
Dave C and New Dave.

Good point , Stringer

You have to be careful saying "mark" in the body of a post here:- )although
your comment is MARK worthy :-)

and then I bet you could get confused with Cassino too.. ( puns always
intended)

Nicole, the pigeon shot is super, and the surfboard without rider gave me a
chuckle.. I wish it were a bit darker overall. I think you could prune this
group of 20 a bit for more impact - but that's coming from someone who things
if you've seen one surfing photo you've seen them all so perhaps unfair.
The stump that others have mentioned is interesting, but the birdie is the
winner for me. It's a money shot for a poster

I'm "looking at you" makes me think of "judgement day". On judgment day the

neglect, abuse and mistreatment of animals.

These pictures were from a stop in a little coastal town named Cayucos along
Hwy 1.

This guy was staring at me from the rafters under the pier:
