GFM 2011 is in the bag
OK, another year and another GFM Nature Photography Weekend has passed into the history books. Words cannot describe how exhausted I am now. I'm now at my friends' place in nearby Ashe county having a beer after a sound afternoon nap. I think this was the best, smoothest running GFM ever. It certainly bodes well for the future as founder Don Nelson reduces his involvement with the event and Doug Brewer and I take over more of the management role. (We're already scheming about 2012.) The 10th anniversary of the original PDML meet-up at Grandfather Mountain had a smaller PDML turnout than usual, but fully 50% of the original 6 from ten years ago were present: Myself, Doug Brewer and Bill Owens. I really must apologize to John Sessoms and Ted Beilby for not being able to spend more time with them during the weekend. I always want to take advantage of the rare opportunities to meet with PDML members in person when the opportunity arises but this event is a major time sink. On Saturday I did my annual photography hike, again on the Profile Trail, but this year had only Pentax shooter and occasional PDML lurker John Weber for company. None the less, our trek yielded some good photos for me and a *prize-winner* for John. Not bad, all things considered. John and I also hatched a scheme to take advantage of the unusually clear weather to try to get sunrise photos from the Cragway Trail on Sunday morning. This trail has stunning views but is usually socked-in with fog in the morning (Doug and I tried a pre-dawn photo expedition there a couple of years ago and enjoyed 50-yard visibility during sunrise). We planned a 4:30 AM departure, which seemed reasonable at the time. We soon found an extra 4 people added to the expedition. We were up at 4:15 an on the trail only slightly later than planned (due to the extra difficulty of coordinating the larger group) but made our way to the spot called Top Crag View by 5:50 after an aggressively-paced hike up the trail. Hiking difficult trails by the light of headlamps in pitch darkness is an acquired taste. Despite the unusual lack of fog, sunrise was obscured by a bank of clouds on the eastern horizon, but there were some fairly good photographs to be had and everyone enjoyed the hike. Still, the early start made for a long day... Photo contest judging and awards preparation were completed ahead of schedule(!) and the contest entries were some of the best ever. I think the Doug and Mark Show was one of the best ever, too. It really helps when you're prepared and relaxed. Amazing, huh? But the 4:15 AM start made for a long day and even with an afternoon nap I'm fading now. I've backed up all my SD and CF cards onto the laptop and I'm going to quit work for the day and relax. I still have two presentations to prepare for later in the week but for now I'm just going to chill a bit. I'll have photos and more videos on line soon. Good night all. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

GFM openings for Nature Photography Weekend
Just got an email from Landis. They have had many cancellations and have exhausted the waiting list. Hello all, This is a first since I've been at Grandfather...we've had so many cancellations that I have exhausted the Waiting List and we actually now have empty seats available for NPW. We've probably had close to 30 people who have had to cancel their registration the last few weeks due to weddings, graduations, emergency surgeries, etc. And understandably, some folks who were on the bottom of the waiting list have gone ahead and made other plans for the weekend. With that said, we have about 6 seats open at this time. Please pass this information on to any folks you think might be interested in coming at short notice. You'll see the NPW page on grandfather.com is barebones at this time. We've had some technical difficulties as we get a mobile version of the site ready. I'll attach the schedule and contest rules for you to share with any interested folks. Here are the two options that are available. Please have anyone interested contact me by e-mail or phone ASAP. NPW Participant: $115 Pre registration fee covers 3-day park admission, Saturday evening meal, a seat in the auditorium for the programs, and a CD for turning in your contest entries. Guest NPW ticket: $95 covers 3-day park admission, Saturday evening meal, and a seat in the auditorium for the programs. If a person registers, we still have these passes available for any family or friends that they wish to bring with them for the weekend. These passes do not include a seat in the auditorium for programs. Guest 3-day park admission only: $30 adult, $15 child. [reg. $45/$21] Guests for dinner Saturday night: $10 Thanks! It is a really special weekend and a tradition we should endeavor to keep in our little world. I'll try again next year. I'll try just as hard. GFM: I'm not going again
I'm sad to say that I've given up my spot at Grandfather Mountain again this year. We've got so much going on leading up to that weekend and are planning a trip to Michigan later in June. I just can't justify the trip to N.C. this time. I will say that we, as a group, should not let this year's apparent lull in GFM attendance turn into a normal thing. It is a really special weekend and a tradition we should endeavor to keep in our little world. I'll try again next year. Upcoming North Carolina activities - besides GFM
As usual, I'll be coming down early for GFM and staying a while after. As *not* usual I'll have activities other than shooting photos to attend to: On Thursday June 9 I'll be giving a presentation for WildSouth.org (www.wildsouth.org) on nature photography in general and photography in that area specifically. Festivities begin at 5:30 and will run until around 7:30. It's going to be held at the Westglow Spa (www.westglowresortandspa.com), which is just outside Blowing Rock, between Blowing Rock and Grandfather Mountain. On Saturday June 11 I'll be leading a nature photography hike in the Lost Cove Wilderness Study Area (also near Blowing Rock) for Wild South. I'll have exact time and starting location soon. And some time during the week (June 6-11) I'll be doing a book signing (of my Blue Ridge High Country book) at Black Bear Books in Boone, NC (www.blackbearbooks.com) - they've just moved to the Boone Mall at 1180 Blowing Rock Rd (AKA Rt 221) this past weekend, so the location shown by Google Maps is inaccurate right now. These events are all free, so I hope some PDML people can make an appearance! -- Mark Roberts - Photography Multimedia www.robertstech.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I thought I was going to. But I've been logging a lot of miles back and forth between KC and Michigan. Our house in KC goes on the market next weekend, and after that my schedule is at the mercy of the buyer (assuming that there is at least one interested buyer out there.) So the combination of fatigue and schedule uncertainty may keep me home or otherwise occupied. From: Cotty On 29/12/10, Mat Maessen, discombobulated, unleashed: Just don't try to find a set of rear tires for it in rural North Carolina... :-) Found a youtube link for the first 10 mins which shows them on GFM... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rF8pPHhUoscfeature=related From 2 minutes in... They do seem to get a remarkable number of things wrong or misrepresented. They start talking about the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia, but the entire Blue Ridge Parkway segment is in North Carolina. They don't get the whole idea of the Blue Ridge Parkway ... it's a PARK-way. It's not about how fast you can blast down the road, it's about a leisurely drive to see some of the country's most beautiful scenery. If you're in a hurry, take the fn' Interstate. That's what it's there for. They call northwestern North Carolina (Daniel Boone country) Squeal like a pig territory. Wrong geographic reference. Squeal lika a pig is from the movie Deliverance, set along the fictional Cahulawassee River in Georgia. The Cahulawassee is based in part on the Chattooga River that forms the border between South Carolina and Georgia and partly on the Chattahoochee river that flows from the Blue Ridge Mountains of northern Georgia through suburban Atlanta before joining with the Flint River near the Georgia/Florida border to become the Apalachicola. They're about 200 miles too far north. There is no Interstate Highway between Grandfather Mountain and Wilkesboro, NC. It's US 421 all the way from where you exit the Parkway just east of Boone. The Interstate footage interspersed with the US 421 footage appears to be from I-81 in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. It's a long detour to get onto any interstate between the Parkway at GFM and Wilkesboro, NC. I don't know where they found that steel truss bridge, but it ain't in North Carolina, and it's not on I-81 in Virginia either. I've driven I-81 several times all the way from its origin at exit 421 off of I-40 in eastern Tennessee to Harrisburg, PA, and that bridge ain't on I-81 anywhere south of Harrisburg. The quickest way from the Wilkesboro Speedway north is to take US 421 east to I-77 north to I-81 north. You could save about 10 miles if you know to take NC 268, but you won't save any time, because it's 35-55 mph on NC 268 and 55-65 mph on US 421/I-77. NC 268 only makes sense if you have to make service calls in Elkin, NC as I did when it was part of my service territory back when I worked for the alarm company. What took me up I-81 so often was having to cover for the techs in adjacent territories, so they'd cover for me when I was off being all I could be. Wilkesboro Speedway is not the birthplace of NASCAR. It's one of the early tracks, possibly the first paved oval (IDK), but NASCAR was born in Daytona Beach, FL. and the first race was at Charlotte Speedway (defunct) and the third was at Occoneechee Speedway (also defunct) in Hillsborough, NC, which were the first two dedicated NASCAR tracks. The Daytona Beach Road Course used for the second race of the first season was not a NASCAR track. The NASCAR track at Daytona International Speedway didn't open until 1959 - 10 years after the founding of NASCAR. Wilkesboro was the last race of that first 1949 NASCAR season. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
