Everyone is concerned about digital. I don't think that Pentax were
lying to us in their press release about the retooled, lower cost body,
and I also don't think that they're ridiculously stupid.

If a $6-7K body came out and tanked, I'd be concerned about their
survival as a company. I have no problem with Pentax playing it safe,
but then again, I'm not in the market for a $6K digital SLR. Those who
are will certainly feel differently.

At the risk of prolonging this thread, I offer the following comments.

The Optio 430, 330, & 230 are Pentax's digital offerings.
I hear they are selling quite well.
Good decision by Pentax to make money!
Not a bad marketing decision either...

Go over to your local electronics retailer.
You will find tons of cameras mixed in with the computers.
The 3 megapixel stuff is going for US$500-700 and up.
The results are good and download to your computer easily.

What was the last 35mm camera to move that well or get that kind of
distribution?
They are selling point-n-shoot cameras for $500 and they are flying off the
shelves!
What would you want to do if you were a manufacturer?
Help those picky 35mm photo hobbyists, or sell to Joe Sixpack?
It's Polaroid all over again...

And you will have to wait for your 35mm versions, if they ever come.
You can make a pretty good case for the idea that they never will.
With a couple of more steps, the consumer grade stuff will be all the 'Pros'
need.
Just how sharp does that photo of Johnny and the Easter Bunny need to be.
...Or that photo of the Mayor and the Citizen of the Year?

The whole point of Pentax making a prototype for the photo show to is
gauge market reaction. And they will spend $$ for market research before
releasing any new products (including "studio pro"). So if their research
and the response to their prototype shows that it would not sell at that
price range, they won't release it. As simple as that. Why would they
not release a product if it will be profitable?

> I said it before, GET REAL!

Yes, and the reality is that there simply are not enough people who is
willing to spend $6000+ on a Pentax out there.

Yes, I am sure Pentax knows what its customers want. They want P&S cameras
in 35mm, APS, and digital. It is why they make anything else I can not
understand. SLRs, 35mm or roll-film, just don't fit their obvious marketing
bent. They sell a lot of binoculars and microscopes too. Though I imaging
electron microscopes are eating into that segment now.

For what it is worth 35mm based 3MP digital SLRs have been around for more
than a decade now. They are just getting down to where consumers notice them
pricewise.

Let's put it this way. If you were a studio pro, and you could buy the
Pentax for $7000, or you could buy a 6MP 24x36mm digital back, probably with
the same chip, for your Hasselblad for $16000. Which would you buy?

I don't know, I don't understand, and I totally am at a lost to know why the
fact that such an expensive camera won't sell to snapshooter's for hobby use
makes everybody on the list think no one wants one. Either I am grossly
stupid, or most of the people here are incapable of seeing beyond their own
wallet. If you don't need it nobody needs it. A clear understanding of
market dinamics, not!

Re: PhotoExpo - so nothing new from Pentax?

2002-03-24 Thread Cotty

>Cotty, would you really demote yourself to the horror that is Canon
>glass because you're impatient?

Yes, but -

Actually, I would probably be slightly less committal to Canon, by buying
a used D30 and a Tokina 28-70 for starters. D30 prices are already
falling fast. Three months ago, there was only a page or so of D30s on
eBay. Now there are three pages. In six months there will be 10 pages.

I would not sell my LX and best glass, rather gauging the market over
time. Some K mount Tokinas would go to fund the D30, but LX and 85 mil
would stay for a while, possibly for ever, if I can afford it. Time would
be spent gauging Pentax DSLR commitment (if any), and if there was
something forthcoming, I might swap back. Or I might not. I reserve the
right to make my mind up as I go based on what's available versus what my
requirements are. But as I see it, I will be shooting some digital by
year's end one way or the other.

I wouldn't desert my Pentax film gear completely (ever) - there are some
things which always remain precious, as we all know.

I wouldn't consider my course of action as impatience. I simply would
like to pursue a certain means to an end, and I'd rather not spend extra
money having to buy new lenses as well as a digital body. Actually I have
nothing against Canon at all. Of course I would prefer to stay with
Pentax, as I have been loyal to the brand since 1978. But since then I
have also owned and used Mamiya and Leica gear also. It didn't preclude
me using Pentax gear, and I don't foresee any change in that policy.

Hope this clarifies my personal intentions.

My thoughts are along those lines, but I was thinking we'd have another open period
for people to opt in or opt out. Say 1 week starting from this Monday.

Also, I propose a tie breaking committee to decide who wins if it isn't obvious. I
nominate Bob Walkden, Pal Jensen and Tom Rittenhouse.

Pal knows too much, and would have to be excluded anyway. ;)

Since I first joined this list in about '98 or '99, there's been constant
"new flagship at next show" predictions, almost always followed by "did I
say this show? I meant the next show" cop-outs.

It's just a 'feature' of the PDML.

To quote an old American baseball player, "Deja-vue all over again!" There were
the same exact same posts here several years ago regarding the mythical MZ-1.
Over the years I have come to the opinion that if Pentax's current products
satisfy your needs, stay with them. If you need them to come out with something
new, you will wind up in anticipation purgatory.

New limited lens (RE: PhotoExpo - so nothing new from Pentax?)

2002-03-22 Thread tom

Assuming no new limited at PhotoExpo, what do you guys want to do with the pool?

- scrap it
- leave it as is until a new lens gets announced.
- start over again in May in anticipation of a summer announcement.

I'm told the 2 likely scenarios are mid to late summer, or Photokina.

Other suggestions welcomed.

myself. Almost, but not quite. Even an announcement would have been

I think if they have nothing for Photokina then you wont be the only
customer lost to Pentax. Many more will leave soon and probably many of
those will never return. They HAVE to get it done this year - their
market is diminishing with every passing month.

I must admit that I was very skeptical. No, really. I just got caught up
in all the hype.

Let's put it this way: I have firmly decided that if nothing happens at
Photokina this year, a few days later I will be placing an order for a
Canon D60, grip, microdrive, and extra battery, which means there will be
a lot of K mount glass going up for sale. There's only one possible thing
that will stop me from doing that, and you know what it is. At this time,
I am convinced that I wont be selling *anything*...

Photokina in September. Pentax is prone to announce major releases at the Photokina
show. However, they are also known to release products at anytime - no show required.
Then theres Photography day the first of june when Pentax release the "Photo annual"
book - this event may also be a launching pad for products.

Amazing what you can do when you free up that R&D budget that had been directed

Wow thanks!

This looks to seal it though - nothing new of interest! They would have
to redo the stands to justify something as big as new limiteds or
digi-SLR.

I've put up some temporary pics from the Pentax booth for your perusal:

Pentax actually had one of the busier booths but nothing exciting shown
(at least on the first day...).

Cheers.

A new lens or two I can understand, but what made you think there would be
a DSLR announcement at this show?
If the MZ-S was any indication, if you start saving for the DSLR now,
you'll probably be able to afford it with money to spare when it comes out.
If we all did that, and then bought it when it came out, Pentax might
actually see a sales jump large enough for them to justify producing more
"high-end" photography products to a quicker schedule.
