Re: PESO: emperor dragonflies
Alan, that review confirms my experience with this lens about AF-S and AF-C. The body is the limiting factor in AF. However this review is from 2017 so they haven't tested it on the K-3 III. I bought the K-70 a few years ago to fit the 55-300 PLM (it won't combine with my K-5) and for me this is a pleasant light weight combo to walk around in nature. For birding you often need a longer lens which I don't have. Only if it gets stuck I would switch to a mirrorless system like the Fujifilm XT-5. No reason to go watercooling when there are air coolers like that. Quieter and less problematic - can't have a water leak if there's no water. Upgrading win 10 to 11 is pretty straightforward if I remember correctly. And the GUI is identical, I don't see why you can hate Win11 and love Win10. Microsoft is still weeding out old Win10 code and if you deep dive in the system the old stuff is still running (like control panel, device manager etc). The Settings app is not my favorite tool to tweak, the same for Apple OS's settings app (maybe that's improved but my Mac Mini from 2012 is frozen by Apple). Some dragonflies do indeed hover, so you have sometimes one or more seconds. Inherited from my father who received it from his colleagues on the occasion of his retirement, together with the matching flash unit. Had to have it repaired twice, over the years. Re: Size Comparison of 17 and GRiii
The Pentax 17 looks like a decent camera, albeit to my eye the styling seems a little clunky and I don't understand the need for all those controls and mode settings. The choice of half-frame 35 format is interesting, memories of a lot of fine photos made with Olympus Pen EE cameras comes to mind. However, this is arguably my all-time favorite compact 35mm camera. It's full-frame 24x36 mm format... Minox 35GT-E :: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53837228803_b43a592cb9_b.jpg I bought it new in 1998, cost about $400 IIRC. The lens is excellent quality, the negatives are terrific. The only thing it lacks, for me, is a full manual exposure setting capability, but the aperture priority auto plus manual ISO setting net all the adjustability I could want. With the lens door folded, it is smooth and compact, slips nicely even into a jeans pocket. The makrolon plastic construction is very tough and difficult to scratch. A few photos of it and with it: https://www.flickr.com/search/?user_id=23913128%40N02=date-taken-desc=Minox+35GT-E_all=1 I wish I could find as elegant, small, and simple a digital camera as the Minox 35GT-E. I shoot DNG exclusively (though I usually run the files through DNG Converter when downloading because I can have it do file renaming at the same time and it gets me to the latest spec DNG) for 3 reasons, in increasing order of importance: 1 - Files are smaller than PEF 2 - The open format of DNG (it's based on TIFF) is better for future compatibility than almost anything else (except possibly TIFF itself and JPEG) 3 - The embedded MD-5 hash makes file validation possible en mass, that is to say, without opening files and looking at them. Re: Quick survey
I shoot PEF, and convert to DNG on import with Lightroom ("Copy as DNG"). The reason I do this is that when Lightroom does the conversion, it embeds a checksum that can later be used with "Library > Validate DNG Files" to verify that no disk corruption has occurred. At least at the time I decided to do things this way, DNG as shot by my cameras did not embed this checksum. Once a month, I select all the photos in my catalog and run the Validate task. (Knock on wood, it has never found an error so far.) On Sun, Jun 23, 2024 at 11:46 AM Paul Sorenson wrote: > Do you shoot your RAW files as DNGs or PEFs? Re: Quick survey
The *ist-D allowed you to save as PEF, TIF or JPG. Herbert Kepler recommended TIF in his Popular Photography column, so that's what I shot in 2004. IIRC, the TIF was available in small, medium & large, which I didn't understand at the time. After I got home in 2005 & could buy more CF cards fairly easily, I switched to PEF. Continued to shoot PEF when I finally got a K10D. Began shooting DNG files late in 2012 when I got a K20D. Occasionally I would shoot JPEG (when I would somehow gum up the settings) or RAW+JPEG With the K-3 & K-1 I've shot exclusively DNG. With the VueScan software, I can also save files from my scanners as DNG. On 6/23/2024 3:25 PM, Ralf R Radermacher wrote: Am 23.06.24 um 21:06 schrieb Henk Terhell: Always DNG, never tried PEF. Re: Motherboard upgrade: Seeking advice from all (but it's probably gonna be mostly from Larry)
I did a new build last year based on a Gigabyte Aorus MB and Aorus video card. I chose the MB because it supported 4 x M.2 cards on the MB which are significantly faster than anything going through the SATA buss. The only other card I attached to the MB is the video card, but there are many slots available for other stuff. One thing that surprised me is that the system tests faster with less ram than I expected, and I ended up installing 64gb of ram instead of the 128gb that I had initially planned on. Gigabyte does make some pretty snazzy gear. I did end up with liquid cooling on the advice of the guy who did the actual build. So far I'm happy with what I ended up with. bill On 6/18/2024 10:08 AM, Mark Roberts wrote: I've been having computer problems that I've traced to the motherboard (to about 99% certainty) and, as I'm long overdue for an upgrade, I'm thinking it's time to go for a new motherboard. Re: Motherboard upgrade: Seeking advice from all (but it's probably gonna be mostly from Larry)
Yeah, I would expect that a new GPU would give you the most bang for your buck. If you can upgrade the CPU without upgrading your MOBO, that would give a good boost with less risk of finding out that your new mobo doesn't support some bus that one of your old cards needs, or suchlike. It would be very interesting if you could do some sort of benchmark before and after each upgrade. Have lightroom build a 12 frame HDR pano, and then do a denoise on it. Then do the same thing on the same files, each time you upgrade. I suspect that more memory would make more difference without the GPU, since they often have their own memory. > On Jun 18, 2024, at 1:59 PM, Toine wrote: > > Any major brand is ok (MSI, Asus, Asrock). Re: Motherboard upgrade: Seeking advice from all (but it's probably gonna be mostly from Larry)
I wish I could help, but I haven't been keeping up. I've just been buying used mac gear from a friend with a shop in Santa Cruz (Pacific Macs). A couple other people on the list have built up new machines in the past year and would know better than me what to look for. A while back the mobo in my home Linux box fried, I bought a used mobo from a friend, and then it wouldn't boot off the drives I had or something crazy like that. So what I've mostly learned is weird and unexpected things lose compatibility and you're likely to need to replace half your system for more than the cost of just buying a new system. In a related note, I recently put together a RAID NAS with "renewed" drives off Amazon. I'm glad that it's RAID, and second level of backup, because last night one of the drives already crapped out. For primary storage it would probably be worth paying $310/drive rather than $170. > On Jun 18, 2024, at 9:08 AM, Mark Roberts wrote: > > I've been having computer problems that I've traced to the motherboard > (to about 99% certainty) and, as I'm long overdue for an upgrade, I'm > thinking it's time to go for a new motherboard. Thanks Ann! It was warm and sunny here today (about 80-82° at peak) but dry as a bone and a bit windy, so I didn't feel it at all on my walk. I didn't carry a camera ... spent the walk listening to another book on physics and cosmology by Carlo Rovelli. ;) G — "No matter where you go, there you are." > On Jun 17, 2024, at 3:00 PM, ann sanfedele wrote: > > well I /adore/ it :-) > > good to see a post from you -- hope you are keeping cool > > ann > > > On 6/17/2024 5:23 PM, Godfrey DiGiorgi wrote: >> This appealed to me, saw it while out on my walk the other day. >> >>Not A Door :: https://flic.kr/p/2pXVDCG >> -- %(real_name)s Pentax-Discuss Mail List To unsubscribe send an email to pdml-le...@pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Not my cup of tea, but I'm so far outside the intended demographic I might as well be in orbit. At first I thought the portrait mode framing was odd, but then I remembered this camera is being targeted at an audience who regards that as default because they've grown up on smartphone cameras. -- Mark Roberts - Photography & Multimedia www.robertstech.com -- %(real_name)s Pentax-Discuss Mail List To unsubscribe send an email to pdml-le...@pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
