All those autocorrections are great for jpeg-shooters. I wouldn't

three years and for another mumblemumble years with my Z1-p. I cannot see any
marks on my lens mounts at all.

With the Adaptall 2 adaptor, there's a lens, and then a mount-specific
adaptor. If the lens is pure MF, and the adaptor -- because that's what
one can get off ebay -- supports auto-focus, the camera has absolutely
no way to tell that the screw drive isn't connected to anything.

That's the unusual edge case. I don't imagine the problem would arise
with a Pentax M lens.

The Adaptall Kmount adaptors replicate either K/M or A lenses. I don't
think there are _any_ autofocus ones, never mind Kmount ones. I use my
Tamron 300/2.8, 90/2.5 and 70-210 zoom on my LX, ME Super, Z1-p and DL2
with no problems whatsoever, using whichever adaptor happens to be
installed at the time. No sign of adaptor damage.

The other part of it is that the camera really, really needs to
know the focal length to auto-focus accurately.

-- Graydon, who has tried to use focus confirm on the 500 while
the camera still thought it was 800.

Not by my understanding of how AF systems work. Is there
something different in the K10/20 systems? What they generally do
need is a decent amount of light.

I think it's connected to the shake reduction.

So far as I can tell in the case of the K20D, autofocus and shake
reduction are really one combined system with different sensor
inputs and mechanical parts, but which meet up in the electronic
controls.

I don't see how the AF system would need to know the FL of a lens to
work. It just measures contrast and stops everything when it is
highest.

AF doesn't, but the shake reduction does, and the autofocus and the
shake reduction talk to each other.

I don't know why, or how; I do know the K20D firmware upgrade that was
supposed to improve anti-shake increased autofocus speed.

I wonder if the antishake confuses the AF by reducing apparent contrast
unless the correct FL is known, thereby allowing some software cludge.

No Adaptall mounts support AF. There are 2 versions for K mount, one
is plain K and the second is KA (but not 100% KA, as aperture
reporting via contacts is only accurate within certain limits). Some
Chinese clones also exist, but are essentially uncoupled preset
adapters that are really an uncoupled M42 mount on a M42-K adapter.

AF confirm Adaptall adapters exist for other mounts (but are the same
chinese uncoupled stacked m42 setup) but those only enable AF confirm
(and Av mode on some Sony bodies).

there may be an upgrade to the K20D shortly after the release of the new

Re: How many DA/DFA lenses do you own?

2009-05-18 Thread John Francis

Thanks, Doug (and others).

The actual birthday was spent doing not very much (which,
nowadays, is high on the list of desirable ways to spend a day).
We had an oenophile friend visiting from out of town, so on the
two previous days we'd had nice dinners cooked on the charcoal
grill accompanied by some of the local California produce (two
Pinot Noirs from the Santa Maria area). We had intended to
drink one of the two bottles he'd brought from his cellar, but
as I was still getting over a summer cold we decided it would
be a shame to open them. One is a bottle of Mouton Rothschild
(1986), and the other is a 1970 Musigny Comte Georges de Vogue.
Nice kind of friend to have, no?

He flew out on Friday night, heading off to Australia for some
Southern hemisphere stargazing (his major hobby is astronomy).
Then on Saturday my wife and I went to a wine tasting event held
in the Santa Lucia Highlands area. Unfortunately the weather
wasn't really cooperating - the temperature hit 100 in the
Soledad area - but it was slightly cooler in the foothills.

None here, although I've owned 3 in the past (2 copies of the 18-55
and one 16-45). Right now my only Pentax lens is an SMC Takumar 50/1.4
(which ironically is the only SMC Tak I've ever owned, all my other
Pentax lenses were either Super-Tak's or K mount SMC Pentax stuff)

Can't wait to see what's announced this week though.

Nobody not sworn to at least partial secrecy really knows what the
specs are yet, although some people who've seen things have been
hinting (Thibouille in particular).

All that's solidly known is it's smaller than the K10D/K20D and shares
control layout with the current incarnation of the 645D demo unit,
it's not a direct K20D replacement and should be at least a bit higher
performance than the K20D.

Probably not.
In theory Pentax could provide a way in body to input user-based

I suspect it [the feature] takes into account lens model but focus
distance as well as aperture and focal length so it would be quite
difficult IMO to build such profile for other lenses.

You shouldn't be worried, there is no loss of functionality.
Simply that feature will not work. Nothing bad, only good, even though
limited to some lenses.

In an interview, a Pentax rep said they had to change something in
already roadmapped lenses.
This is it (or part of it). Think MTF, it is provided by the lens, not
the body. Same here except previous DA/DFA lenses which settings will
be firmware based.

Oh, anybody likes HDR, by the way?

Re: How many DA/DFA lenses do you own?

2009-05-17 Thread Adam Maas
In-camera lens correction is a safe bet. My G1 does this with m43
lenses (but not 4/3rds lenses mounted via adaptor). Useful, especially
with wide-angles (say goodbye to distortion), but also impractical to
evaluate all F and later lenses (A and earlier lenses don't identify
the model to the camera and therefore couldn't support the feature
in-camera). Supporting DA and D-FA lenses only is a good middle
ground.

corrections but I highly doubt that.
I suspect it [the feature] takes into account lens model but focus
distance as well as aperture and focal length so it would be quite
difficult IMO to build such profile for other lenses.

In-camera lens correction is a safe bet. My G1 does this with m43
lenses (but not 4/3rds lenses mounted via adaptor). Useful, especially
with wide-angles (say goodbye to distortion), but also impractical to
evaluate all F and later lenses (A and earlier lenses don't identify
the model to the camera and therefore couldn't support the feature
in-camera). Supporting DA and D-FA lenses only is a good middle
ground.

DA 50-200

Re: How many DA/DFA lenses do you own?

2009-05-17 Thread John Francis

If, as you suggest, it's anything implemented in software, then I'm
not going to worry about it one whit - that's what Photoshop is for.
The only in-camera processing I use (apart from ISO variations) is
JPEG conversion (RAW+JPEG or just plain JPEG output for happy-snaps).

While I did notice, just the other day, that my every day kit is all
stuff that's at most 2 1/2 years old, and that my most-used lenses
are DAs (mostly 16-50 and 50-135), I've got a good number of older
lenses that come out occasionally. There's no way I'm going to
replace all of those, no matter how useful the feature may be.

You will remember a while back the discussion of the new Pentax
copyright for a lens mount / sealing rings?

I suspect the DA and DFA, which have two different types of rubber 'O'
ring, one called WR, the other not mentioned, will both be
accommodated in the new camera. I'm not going to look, but I don't
know if any of the FA and older lenses have any 'O' ring at all. The
newest lenses will have more of an 'O' skirt, if my memory serves.
