During the bloody Battle for Iwo Jima, U.S. Marines from the 3rd
Platoon, E
Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Regiment of the 5th Division take the
crest of
Mount Suribachi, the island’s highest peak and most strategic
position, and

raise the U.S. flag. Marine photographer Louis Lowery was with them and
recorded the event. American soldiers fighting for control of
Suribachi’s

slopes cheered the raising of the flag, and several hours later more
Marines headed up to the crest with a larger flag. Joe Rosenthal, a
photographer with the Associated Press, met them along the way and
recorded
the raising of the second flag along with a Marine still
photographer and a

motion-picture cameraman.

Rosenthal took three photographs atop Suribachi. The first, which
showed
five Marines and one Navy corpsman struggling to hoist the heavy
flag pole,

became the most reproduced photograph in history and won him a Pulitzer
Prize. The accompanying motion-picture footage attests to the fact
that the
picture was not posed. Of the other two photos, the second was
similar to

the first but less affecting, and the third was a group picture of 18
soldiers smiling and waving for the camera. Many of these men,
including

three of the six soldiers seen raising the flag in the famous Rosenthal
photo, were killed before the conclusion of the Battle for Iwo Jima
in late

March.

By March 3, U.S. forces controlled all three airfields on the
island, and
on March 26 the last Japanese defenders on Iwo Jima were wiped out.
Only

200 of the original 22,000 Japanese defenders were captured alive. More
than 6,000 Americans died taking Iwo Jima, and some 17,000 were
wounded.

Re: Worldcon 76 (oops, more)

2018-08-20 Thread Larry Colen
Oops, I forgot a couple of details. I had been wandering around showing
off a metal print of this photo, which I considered worth showing off:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/42922334624

and someone bought it from me. It does work well in metal, and was
meant as a test print, rather than a final product, so that was cool.
She offered me $100 and it cost me $60 to print, so while it isn't a
great markup percentage, I'm thrilled that my test print paid for
itself. I had a few other people ask about buying it as well.

It seems that metal is a good medium for selling, because it doesn't
require expensive hanging and framing, and photos that work well in
metal are the bright eye catching ones that tend to appeal to the masses.

One of the major photographers in the local fandom community did a
presentation on one of his projects, a series of portraits of authors
and others in the field on a 4x5 camera. I can certainly understand the
appeal of using that camera, but it really does not seem to be the
optimal tool for the job of portraiture, particularly in situations of
limited time, particularly at $5/frame.

Larry Colen wrote on 8/20/18 5:19 PM:
I just got home from Worldcon. I didn't take many photos. I did take a
few in a panel on photographing costumes. I behaved myself and mostly
kept my mouth shut. I also had a friend ask me to get some photos of her
costume, and she's one of those young ladies that I find it very easy to
say yes to.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157700437942465

I was pleasantly surprised by how many people understood the joke on my
badge, which referenced this comic:

https://xkcd.com/327/

At the end of the con they were selling off stuff that they no longer
needed and I picked up a Pixma iX6820 printer for $65. I figure that it
will be handy for when I want to print something that would be
problematic at Costco. I also have a friend that would like some of my
photographs on postcards.

I know pretty much nothing about printing things myself, so would
appreciate suggestions for ink, paper, and blank postcards.

Mark,

Yep. I actually had a bunch of Adobe entries in the hosts file, but,
apparently, Reader DC uses yet some different host/set of hosts.

I was surprised that it started auto-updating itself this morning.

Thanks for the reminder, zonealarm is a very useful tool. I don't

consider finally installing it here as well.

Transitition isn't the half of it... The neighborhood I shot this in

Re: Time for a new macro purchase--possible duplicate posting, oops

2014-06-17 Thread Mark C

HI Barry -

I have an older version of the Tamron - the 90mm f2.8 auto focus - and
the DFA Pentax 100mm Macro (non WR). Both are excellent lenses but the
biggsest difference I notice is the the Pentax has the quick-shift focus
adjustment which makes manually fine tuning focus very quick and easy.
With the Tamron I have to both pull the lens focus ring back to put it
in manual focus mode *and* disable AF on the body. The two step process
if very clunky (would be better to be able to juse disengage AF from the
body.) Like I said, I have the film era Tamron lens, maybe the latest
versions offer something more like the Pentax quick shift. To me that
would be a significant issue.

Optically both lenses seem to be excellent, though I bought the Tamron
last year to use with film bodies and have not really tested it with a
digital body.

that's because Amazon is not itself the actual seller for either; e.g. "FumFie"

for the WR, i would look to B+H because i don't see any straight-up sellers for

for the non-WR i would probably look first at keh.com; at the moment KEH has
the non-WR in EX+ condition for $400 and the WR in EX for $525

Sadly one of the few. I think this and the 10-24 (which I also have)
are the only two current Tamron lenses in Pentax mount.

On a par with other 'screwdriver' drive lenses - certainly more than

Re: Time for a new macro purchase--possible duplicate posting, oops

2014-06-16 Thread Stanley Halpin
Barry - I can’t give you specific detailed comments on the two Pentax lenses.
But I have never heard anybody complain about the image quality from any Pentax
macro- that has always seemed to be a particular niche for them. Using them in
AF mode is a challenge, they will tend to be slower than most non-macro lenses.
But macros are mostly about manual focus anyway.

I have the 100 DFA. I tend to use either the 35mm or 200mm macros and seldom
pull out the 100mm, but have no hesitation using it when that focal length is
called for.

I am quite surprised to see the Amazon pricing on the two Pentax lenses. I
would have expected the newer WR lens to be the same or more than the D FA; the

Hey Folks,

It is!

I had the 90mm f2.5 adaptall for many years, using it for much the
same purpose as you - wildflower photography. Eventually I decided I
wanted autofocus so I sold the adaptall lens and replaced it with the
Tamron AF 90 mm f/2.8 Di. I haven't regretted the decision even
though I haven't used it quite as much as I thought I would (so far).
It's a fine performer and I don't think you'd be disappointed if you
bought one. It can be used in both autofocus and manual modes and
it's not an adaptall lens.

I can't comment on the two Pentax lenses.

1) I’m correct in thinking that all three lenses are autofocus, but can be
used in manual focus too, right?
2) The Tamron for Pentax does not need a damnable adaptall mount, does it?
3) What is the skinny on how these lenses all perform?

Your wisdom is most appreciated

Thanks. I don't know if you noticed the set with the car
nose down, leaning against my garage. That was particularly
entertaing because I was downstairs in the garage at the time.
I heard squeeling tires, a motorcycle horn, a couple of thumps
then a very loud thump as the car hit the building I was in.

When the sherrif spun out in the rain and hit the guard rail,
I was having a challenging time balancing the expsure with
the speedlight, flashing lights, wet reflections etc. The
deputy eventually got rather annoyed at my continuing attempts
to get a clean shot.

One of the shots of the accident that it my racecar actually
did make it into the paper.

It can be an entertaining place to live. When I was a kid,
the CHP used to just leave us flares to put out when there
was a wreck.

Nobody was hurt too badly to leave the scene, on foot.

If you look at my other wreck photos, the woman driving the Jag
left on foot, in heels, and lived in Los Gatos (25 miles away over
mountain roads). This was the first time I've ever heard of
a double hit and run.

I wasn't planning on taking any photos tonight.

I was sitting at my computer, and heard a familiar squeel-thump! Though it was
more of a clang than a thump. I grabbed my cell phone and camera and walked up
to the twin bridges. As I walked up I called 911 when I saw a car facing
southbound in the northbound lane, with a wheel sitting some distance away.
There were several people standing around. None of them were the drivers of the
cars, though one rather inebriated fellow had been a passenger.
The drivers, one definitely drunk the other likely high on something else, both
hightailed it off on foot, in opposite directions.

I think this one, while not the sharpest, best captures the moment:

For fans of bent sheet metal, the rest of the set:

Having lived here a big chunk of the past 40 years, several of them before
I got my drivers license, I've seen a lot of wrecks in front of my house,
for values of "in front" < 250m. I learned several things before I even
got my drivers license:

1) Almost all of the wrecks were caused by drunks, with teenagers
driving beyond their abilities coming in a distant second.

2) People who wore their seat belts did not get hurt.

3) People who didn't wear their seat belt got hurt.

I had that thought for a string of parks here in Atlanta, the Olmsted Linear
Parks, called such because they and the surrounding neighborhood were
originally designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the designer of Central Park.
Some are open and savannah-like. Others wooded. A group of women went to battle
a couple decades ago to prevent the state DOT from putting an expressway
through the neighborhood into the heart of the City.

They won and then went to work getting the parks restored to their original
condition as Olmsted and his sons conceived them. What I think was the last
phase -- putting power lines and telephone cables underground and installing
turn of the century street lights alongside the last of the parks -- was
completed this summer.

My thought back last winter was to use a tripod and take long shots at
different times of the day each season of the year in each park, starting as
they came back to life in the spring. So far all I've got is a few hand-held
shots in one of the parks. I guess I can start anytime I want.

Denver is thick with such -- the NSAs (neighborhood supported agriculture sites

interesting scenes

Beginning to hear about "urban agriculture" in Atlanta, i.e., gardening, even
farming, as a way to make a living in the city.

I've thought about it is a photography project. And made a tentative start.

Lotsa strictly vegetarian recipes for collards out there. Judging from the
recipes, your curry must have been delish. And yes, collards need more than 20
minutes. Two hours, which some swear by, is not necessary. 45 minutes is
probably sufficient.

You've referred to "our farm." Are you talking about a CSA farm, or do you
actually own a farm. [I sure wish I did.]

My Dad spent all day in the kitchen every Sunday. He was a great cook.
Introduced us to all kinds of international foods long before they became so
common. He made a mess. Used practically every pot and pan and dish in the
house. Guess who had to clean up. I got good at it. Still am. When I'm cooking
there's usually a pot of soapy water in the sink. Things get washed up as I go
along.

Of course, this is of great interest to the photographers here.

I worked at DEC for a while, including some time spent working on VMS

Since those days I've also worked at Unix houses (such as SGI, for one).

Both HAL::IBM and VMS::WNT are, sadly, nothing more than coincidence.

you can run a POSIX subsystem alongside Windows. Not an emulation, an actual
POSIX kernel. It used to be available as a free download called SFU (Windows
Subsystem For Unix) later SUA. I'd have called it STFU. It's included with
the top end versions of Windows now, not available separately. Quite
interesting.

Yeah, I thought about that as I was composing the response. The difference, for
me anyway, is that even though the Mac is pretty locked-down, too --not really,
though -- the Apple people seem to understand human beings better, to know what
they're looking for, what will work for them. Everything works. Straight out of
the box. It's unobtrusive. In contrast, MS's attempts to be "helpful" almost
always irritated the hell out of me.

I spent a whole year trying to transition into Unix before I finally threw in
the towel and bought a Mac. To think, all the time lost to that failed effort
when I could have gone to work immediately if I'd gone straight to Mac in the
first place.

I do have to say, if I'd been working with a new machine, not even necessarily
a high-powered one, just adequate, Unix mighta worked out fine for me. As I
was, my thinking was, "If I can get a have decent installation running on this
old junk, I'll buy a new machine." But I am really not sorry that I went Mac.

and focus too inaccurate working that way.

Starting with the K-series DSLRs, Pentax abandoned its old TTL flash
metering all together. In the *istD, there was a separate light meter
for flash, measuring the incoming light onto the CCD chip and capable
of quenching flash output when sufficient illumination had been
provided. This system had been in use, in various incarnations, since
the Pentax LX (1980). The P-TTL system no longer meters flash output
during exposure, but use a preflash. For P-TTL to work, it needs
aperture and focal lenght information from the lens. Thus it can only
work with FA- series lenses and newer. So with a
reveresed-lens-on-tubes setup, there's no flash metering at all.

Would use of flash in this kind of photography be necessary?

It is absolutely necessary. To achieve at least a nominal depth of
field, you need to stop down to f/11 or f/16. In addition, you lose a
couple of stops worth of light through the extension tubes. However
it's not as bad as it seems. A good quality flash (just avoid Sigma
and you're good) will provide the same output every time when set to
manual. When you work with a reversed lens, your working distance is
constant. So effectively, the same combination of flash, aperture and
lens setup will provide the same result every time, regardless of
ambient light. You just have to work out the right combination in
advance. That's a breeze with histograms, you know. I'm old enough to
remember how frustrating that was with gelatine... :-)

Thanks for the very clear explanations, Jostein. I was going to try to quote
extracts of it in responding, but couldn't find a word to leave out. I've
flagged the message for keeping.

Real understand requires practice. I'm getting hardly any practice -- neither
shooting nor processing. I can imagine spending my time doing hardly anything
else, but there are other things that matter that I'm loath to give up. There
is not enough time for it all.

Get clear about priorities, be hard-nosed about it, bite the bullet.

oops

2011-02-22 Thread Larry Colen
A friend needed a photo of herself to use in a yellow pages ad, and possibly
for her website. She ended up paying me on the high end of what I'd charge a
stranger, so I had no problem with setting up a second photo shoot to get a
better photo for her website. Since she's a lawyer, I asked if we could do
some photos in a courtroom, it wouldn't show a lot in the background, but you
can usually tell from the background.

Yesterday, she was involved in some student trial competitions, and arranged
with someone to be able to get some photos afterwards. I headed down to the
Watsonville court, we went into an empty courtroom and were taking a variety of
shots. I had my speedlight on a cable, on the end of my monopod, which
basically seemed to work pretty well. I was having some odd problems getting
the lighting the way I liked, but I got some shots that looked like they'd be
usable. A few minutes before we were done, someone stuck his nose in the room
and it turns out that the court does not allow people to use photos taken in
the courtroom for commercial purposes. It seems there was a big stink a while
back when a lawyer got in, and managed to use the court to film a TV
commercial. The Santa Cruz court doesn't want to give any appearance of
favoritism, so it doesn't allow anyone to use it. Oh well.

We decided to try getting a couple of shots in front of the court house. I was
setting up the camera for shooting outdoors when I realized that the ISO was
set at 1250. That explained some of the odd problems I was having, I was
getting too much exposure from the ambient light, which also, it turns out,
messed with the color balance.

I got a couple of pretty good shots out in front, and to be honest, I think i
may have dodged a bullet in not being able to use the shots that didn't turn
out nearly as well as they should have.

We have a juvenile fantail hanging about in our garden at the moment, and
today's the first time I've seen him have a swim.

It's been 36 degrees today so I just about joined him. (Or her... I can't
tell the difference.)

http://www.multi.net.nz/fantail-swim/

These little guys can be very hard to photograph as they don't stay still
for long, but they are fairly tame and they'll let you get pretty close.

K10D, FA 200mm f/2.8, just resized and a crappy sharpen filter as I can't
be bothered doing anything in this heat. I'd have loved a faster shutter
speed for the second pic but it probably would have been out of focus
anyway.

Cheers,
Dave

Hopefully not teaching you to suck eggs but take all claims of power
rating for supplies with a pinch of salt unless they include an
efficiency rating. An 800W power supply that is only 50% efficient is
not much use. Here in the UK, you can't find much that is any good in
the 750-1000W range for less than ~?100. Silent power supplies are
worth the extra

Good advice, thanks.

At first glance, the biggest problem is going to be finding any power
supply that will fit the form factor.

Re: OT: OOPS! The ongoing saga ...

2011-01-14 Thread John Sessoms

Status update:

I previously had Microsoft Office 98 and Photoshop CS & CS2 installed on
this system. I uninstalled them to recover the space for newer programs.

The only problem uninstalling is MS Office prompts for the installation
disk - can't uninstall without the installation disk (which I'm pretty
sure is in Raleigh somewhere). There is, fortunately, a work around. You
can install a free MS Office 2003 Software Developer's Kit that has a
tool to uninstall previous versions of Office without the disk.

(Just uninstall the SDK after you've uninstalled Office.)

I uninstalled the Photoshop CS2 first, then uninstalled the Photoshop CS
components.

The CS5 installation went fairly smoothly. Only one minor glitch.
Installing from an upgrade disk, I had to identify the qualifying
product and provide the S/N for that product.

Didn't find Photoshop CS3 on the drop-down list, so I chose CS3
Extended. Installation program didn't like that, but the drop-down list
on the *error page* DID include Photoshop CS3. Everything went smoothly
from there.

Bonus: Now when I double click a JPEG or a PEF file, it opens Adobe
Bridge CS5 to the folder where the JPEG/PEF file is located, so I can
see all of the JPEG/PEF files located in the folder as thumbnails. I can
right click any or all & select "open in Camera Raw", giving me the
latest version of Camera Raw for CS5.

HOORAY!!!

Peculiar glitch with Open Office - kind of funny in a dumb sort of way.

After the installation, you can register the software. To register, you
must have to have an Oracle.com account. It's free. You just select
"create account" and you get an on-line form. The form prompts you to
choose a "*user name" ... and fill in your *first name, *last name,
company name, *email address ... (* == mandatory fields).

When you finish the on-line form and click *submit*, it errors out and
tells you that you have the wrong format for your "user name" because
it's not an email address.

I kid you not!

You'd think a database company could figure out that if they want an
email address in the "user name" field on the form, the instructions
should tell the user to enter their email address there.

Especially since the form has another required field where the user does
have to enter their email address. 8-D

==

I still have to figure out what I'm going to do about the fragile power
supply on this system. And, I have limited hard-disk space, although I
already have plans for dealing with that. I'm coping for now.

My *BIG* new 32" monitor is working fairly well. I finally had to
replace that old IBM CRT display that was so badly faded. That's why I
waited until after the first of the year to undertake this project, so I
could budget for the monitor in the new year.

Basically, when I went shopping, I found a choice between a 27" Samsung
LCD monitor with a built in 1080p HDTV tuner for $349 or a $349 32"
Samsung 1080p LCD TV with audio/video inputs for the PC.

There are a few quirks. The TV doesn't have the kind of *tilt* & swivel
base computer monitors have, and I can't wall mount it here at the
apartment. I'll have to live without tilt until I graduate and move back
home.

And I haven't yet figured out if my monitor calibration device is going
to work. Haven't even tried it yet.

The only actual problem I've noticed using the TV for a monitor comes
when the computer is re-booted while the source is set to PC. On reboot,
the "desktop" shifts 1/2 inch to the right (time display in the lower
right corner gets cut off at the colon).

Easily corrected - switch source to TV & back to PC and the desktop is
restored. A minor annoyance I can live with.

Re: OT: OOPS! The ongoing saga ...

2011-01-13 Thread John Sessoms
Definitely power supply problems. I'm coming to the conclusion the
existing power supply never had enough oomph to carry the load anyway,
and it appears the years have not been kind.

Got to find one that's hefty enough in the correct form factor.

On 1/12/2011 9:42 AM, John Sessoms wrote:

Still working on refurbishing this old computer so I can use it as a
desktop and quit using my laptop all the time.

I'm afraid I'm going to end up having to take it in to my local shop for
a checkout. I'm still getting random shutdowns occasionally. I think the
power supply is going flaky on me, but it may be it just doesn't have
enough power to supply power to USB devices. I could see in the POST
that it was getting to the USB devices before crashing.Once I replaced
my USB mouse with a spare one, it booted with no problems.

Then plugging in my new USB powered portable drive shut down the
computer again. For now I've disconnected the built in USB card readers,
and I'm only using my externally powered USB drives.

Maybe the answer is going to be a new powered hub, but I'm thinking
about a new case & power supply if I can find one that will fit the
existing motherboard. The system is a bare-bones ASUS in a shoe-box
style/size case, and there's only room for one hard disk, and I want
more storage on board than that.

Also just realized it's limited memory (maxed out at 2GB), and there's
only one expansion slot - which may get filled with an ESATA controller.

So this one may get relegated again soon anyway (soon == within another
year). Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Meanwhile ... "The big OOPS!"

I had Netscape 7.2 installed on this thing when I was using
itpreviously. Downloaded and installed Mozilla last night, then
uninstalled Netscape. Forgot that with Netscape the mail client is part
of the browser, and lost about a dozen unread email messages.

It's probably a better idea to install the new mail client *before*
removing the old one to smooth the migration path.

Mostly they were just PDML digests that I can get from the archive. The
rest were advertising (B&H, REI, Time-Warner ...) and I would have
deleted them unread anyway. Fortunately, I had already read the one
important message in the batch.

Got Thunderbird installed this morning & will eventually get it
configured the way *I* want it configured.

First thing I need to overcome is my mouse wheel is not scrolling in
Thunderbird. Seems to be working with everything else. Have to dig into
that one and see what setting I need to change.

Meanwhile I do have a nice, comfortable, crisp full size keyboard to
type on when I'm writing.

That's what started this whole quest. The external keyboard/stand
combination I was using for my laptop flaked out on me and I am not
comfortable typing on that laptop's keyboard, especially with the
constant static shocks whenever I wear my silk-weight winter undershirts.

Couldn't find a replacement keyboard/stand. It's no longer made and I
found nothing that is being made that suited me.

Stay tuned.

PS: I've taken a few photos recently, but can't get to them yet.

I'm still uninstalling/installing software. Took PhotoShop CS & CS2 off,
and should have CS5 installed by tonight. Everything around here is
closed down by the weather, so I've got plenty of time here today to get
it done.

Got barely above freezing yesterday, causing just enough melting so that
when all the ice from the freezing rain overnight on Monday refroze
extra smooth for this morning.

Hmmm...luckily not the picture the title conjured up in my mind ;-)

Unfortunately the background draws my eyes away from the collection of
leaves. I think that wouldn't happen if the background were all the
mottled tan without the line of blue tiles. I like the way you can see
the stress pattern around the leaves in the surface tension of the water.

Mike, get an up-to-date copy of the standalone Adobe Raw Converter.

Pentax changed an identification string in PEF back around the time of

Thanks. Another reason to love my favourite software company.

Also, the DNG files out of the K-x should be openable in any version of

I know my K-7 DNGs will open in Photoshop 7.

Sorry, this is 1.7meg. KX files do not seem to be openable in CS2 and
I had to use the Pentax software - this is the smallest file (and it's
cropped) it does. Why are the new pef files different?

Mike, get an up-to-date copy of the standalone Adobe Raw Converter.

Pentax changed an identification string in PEF back around the time of
the K100D Super which broke ACR recognition of PEF. Adobe updated the
ACR in CS3 and CS4 but nothing before that.

Thanks. Another reason to love my favourite software company.
