new memory record for me

2012-09-18 Thread Steven A. DuChene
Last year I spent the summer working at the Intel benchmarking center in
Dupont, WA and some of you might recall me posting about some large memory
systems there with 256GB of memory. At the time that was the most memory I had
personally witnessed running in a Linux server (RH6.1 to be exact).

Well this month I am at a national weather & climate research lab in Wyoming
and that memory record has been broken. Here as part of their latest research
cluster purchase they have 17 large memory systems that are used for OpenGL
based visualization. These systems have 1TB of main memory! Unfortunately it
seems that the latest NVidia Quadro 6000 video cards have only a 39bit register
for addressing memory which means there are problems when using them in systems
with 512GB or more of memory.

Re: no luck on memory for mystery Intel motherboard

2012-08-15 Thread Steven A. DuChene
It does have a speaker on the MB but I have also been able to find a jumper
labeled "DBG SPKR" which I am assuming means debug speaker but I have no clue
as to it's setting. Another person suggested I try clearing the CMOS to see if
that has any effect.

Re: getting rid of android on tablet

2012-08-11 Thread Steven A. DuChene
This runs Ubuntu on top of android. This will not work on a device that only
has 256MB of RAM and a fairly slow processor.
These are light weight tablets as far as system hardware resources. As I said I
am looking to replace the android OS (as in it is not there any more at all) on
them now with some sort of light weight linux distro.

There have been a LOT of unusual ports of Linux to strange hardware (the Linux
for a Nintendo DSLite handheld comes to mind) so I would not think it should be
that much of a stretch to get a semi-functional Linux kernel and busybox system
onto one of these android devices.

It is a pre-production prototype Intel motherboard and none of the numbers
printed on the motherboard show up in any research I have been able to do so
far. I have not yet gone so far as to remove the heat sinks on the non-CPU
chips on the motherboard to see if they provide any clues.

Has anyone successfully removed a heat sink off of a non-CPU motherboard chip
and then reinstalled it with no damage to the motherboard? Like the bridge or
other MB controller chips that have heat sinks held down with spring clips that
fasten under loops soldered into the motherboard.

Re: looking for DDR3 1333MHz ECC memory

2012-08-06 Thread Steven A. DuChene
Definitely not a SuperZMicro board. It is a prototype Intel motherboard. The MB
has a Intel logo printed right on it. I had shown this board & CPU at a PLUG
developers meeting at the technical college on Baseline a few months ago. The
motherboard has some very unusual construction features.

It cannot be a Clarkdale or Arrandale core since the motherboard definitely has
three memory channels and the Clarkdale or Arrandale cores are only dual
channel. According to the tables shown on that same Wikipedia page, with the
tripple memory channels, it has to be either a Bloomfield (single socket -
tripple channel) or a Gulftown (single socket - triple channel). If it is the
Bloomfield then it takes DDR3 1066MHz memory rather than the DDR3 1333MHz
possible for the later Gulftown cores (the early Gulftown cores still use DDR3
1066MHz memory as well).

So perhaps I need DDR3 1066MHz memory rather than the 1333MHz stuff.

It looks like you just have the wrong:

slots populated
or
memory for your chipset/mobo:

>From Wikipedia:
Nehalem microarchitecture based

Main article: Nehalem (microarchitecture)
With the release of the Nehalem microarchitecture in November 2008,[14]
Intel introduced a new naming scheme for its Core processors. There are
three variants, Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7, but the names no longer
correspond to specific technical features like the number of cores.
Instead, the brand is now divided from low-level (i3), through mid-range
(i5) to high-end performance (i7),[15] which correspond to three to five stars
in Intel's Intel Processor Rating[16] as opposed to the entry-level Celeron
(one star) and Pentium (two stars) processors.[17] Common features of all
Nehalem based processors include an integrated DDR3 memory controller as well
as QuickPath Interconnect or PCI Express and Direct Media Interface on the
processor replacing the aging quad-pumped Front Side Bus
used in all earlier Core processors. Also, all these processors have
256 KB L2 cache per core, plus up to 12 MB shared level 3 cache. Because
of the new I/O interconnect, chipsets and mainboards from previous
generations can no longer be used with Nehalem based processors.
 Core i3
The Core i3 was intended to be the new low end of the performance processor
line from Intel, following the retirement of the Core 2 brand.[18][19]

The first Core i3 processors were launched on January 7, 2010.[20]
The first Nehalem based Core i3 was Clarkdale-based, with an integrated GPU and
two cores.[21] The same processor is also available as Core i5 and Pentium,
with slightly different configurations.

The Core i3-3xxM processors are based on Arrandale,
the mobile version of the Clarkdale desktop processor. They are similar
to the Core i5-4xx series but running at lower clock speeds and without
Turbo Boost.[22] According to an Intel FAQ they do not support Error
Correction Code (ECC) memory.[23]
According to motherboard manufacturer Supermicro, if a Core i3
processor is used with a server chipset platform such as Intel
3400/3420/3450, the CPU will support ECC with UDIMM.[24]
When asked, Intel confirmed that, although the Intel 5 series chipset
supports non-ECC memory only with the Core i5 or i3 processors, using
those processors on a motherboard with 3400 series chipsets it will
support the ECC function of ECC memory.[25]
A limited number of motherboards by other companies also support ECC
with Intel Core iX processors; the Asus P8B WS is an example, but it
does not support ECC memory under Windows non-server operating systems.[26]You
HAVE to have some information on that mobo? It should be a Supermicro.

As far as I can tell, your non-ecc is the correct memory.
Is the partity right?

Check the docs before you screw around with ECC.

No video is usually preceeded/accompanied with a bios memory test error, do you
have memory test errors enabled in the bios? Is there beeping?

hacking an android tablet to single function device

2012-05-04 Thread Steven A. DuChene
Since Andriod tablets have become so cheap lately (Pandigital for $29.99 plus
$4.99 shipping) I would like to see if it is possible to re-purpose one to do
server as sort of a single function display device. Does anyone know if it
would be possible to reconfig an Android tablet to NOT have a full desktop
interface with icons and things and instead have it boot up to the display of a
single application?

Also I noticed some of these tablets use a ARM926EJ-S CPU that is supposed to
enable the direct execution of 8-bit Java bytecode in hardware and has an MMU
on the chip (not always a given for ARM CPUs). Does that mean it would be
possible to run a standard Java application without the load of a full JVM? Is
all compiled Java code end up being 8-bit bytecode that could be directly run
on this CPU?

Also I note that plugging a USB keyboard into an Android device does not seem
to work. From what little I have read it is because USB host mode is not
enabled in early versions of Android. It is possible to somehow either add this
functionality via replacement kernel modules or perhaps even rebuild a
new/different kernel for one of these devices to enable this? I have looked at
some of the dmesg output from one of my el cheap'o tablets and I see some
things happening there when I plug in a keyboard but not enough apparently.

Anyway lots of questions about hacking Android tablets. Is this something like
this possible to have a instructional talk on at a PLUGdev meeting at some
point? I.E. from someone who knows a LOT more about this than I do?

network issue blocks svn code pull?

2012-03-30 Thread Steven A. DuChene
I am attempting to pull some code from an open source on-line repository.
When I issue the svn checkout command it just hangs for a long time and
then finally times out with an error message about being unable to connect
to the remote host. I have been given the svn link by one of the project
developers so I am fairly certain it is correct but so far I have been
unable to pull the code I need. I have tried pulling code from other svn
on-line repositories and those seemed to work just fine.

Can anyone lese try the following svn checkout command and let me know if
it works for you?

svn co svn://clusterresources.com/torque/branches/4.0-fixes

I even tried just a simple svn list command instead of a checkout and still
I got the same result. It hangs for some period of time and then finally
times out with an error about not being able to connect to the remote host.

I will be doing a presentation on Editing Video with OpenShot. Brian will
do one of his Inkscape or Blender shorts as well as a demonstration of
linking selected PLUG calendar events and repeats to your personal calendar.

What kind of results would you like to see?

BTW, the system I actually administer is a 10U system with 256 "servers" in it

HI Steven!

You can describe your issue to this list and someone will address it.
We will also need specifics, like distro version, video card/laptop
manufacturer, etc. to assist.

But just as a basic general solution, please follow these simple steps:

1) Boot with various options: (NOMODESET and VGA=XXX)

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 UBUNTU Reference NOMODESET

 Set your framebuffer
resolution to VESA
mode xxx. Check
herefor
a list of possible modes. VGA instructions to change various
resolutions during boot by passing a string to the boot line.

By trial and error you should be eventually able to boot your box if any
possible video driver exists (which it should with any modern linux).

 Still can't figure it out?

2) Change your /etc/inittab to level 3, boot and login, then try to invoke
your X session with "startx" and read the logs.

http://technotes.twosmallcoins.com/?p=139

Still no joy? AND do you have nvidia?

3) Nvidia? Add on the correct drivers:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_readme_install.html

 Still broken?

 4) Document your card/laptop equipment type and distro version and post to
the list.

 Still broken? Can't fix it?

5) Bring to the Linux Security Team Presentation on Saturday at about 6PM
and I will fix it for you.

You can bring your no video problem to the Security Presentation Saturday
at MakerBench:

Brian, can you please cancel the November and December LAB entries for

After the holidays, our LAB will be meeting with the Installfesters where

If it were me, my first thought would be to ask my friend where this new

My second thought would be to start it with NO memory in the system which
should definitely produce some beep code.

no video showing up on new system

2011-11-01 Thread Steven A. DuChene
A friend gave me a new Intel DP45SG motherboard and a Q9550 Core 2 Quad
processor
so I bought what I thought would be a good set of DIMMs to go with it. The DIMMs
are quantity 2 of DDR3 1333MHz 4GB. So I put it together in a new case and a
430W
power supply. The system will turn on but I get no video. Looking over on-line
docs
for the motherboard I decided perhaps the 4GB DIMMs were not suited for the
mother
board so I purchased some 2GB DDR3 1333MHz DIMMs instead with high hopes that
this
would solve the no video problem. No such luck. The motherboard has an on-board
mini speaker which I believe is where any post beep codes should come out. I am
getting nothing from that speaker so I decided to try hooking a regular external
speaker up to the standard audio ports to see if I was getting anything there.
Nada, nothing, zilch.

I tried two different video cards that work in other systems fine but I still
get
no video out when I power on this system.

In looking over the specs for the q9550 processor I see it is supposed to have
a 1333MHz FSB and the motherboard definitely lists support for DDR3 1333MHz
memory.

Anyone here have any ideas or suggestions?

I have a new Buffalo LS-WXL NAS and I would like to root it. It has the
newer firmware version, 1.43, and the instructions for rooting it (
http://buffalo.nas-central.org/wiki/Category:LS-WXL) have not caught up with
the new firmware. However, I was able to unzip the firmware to my laptop and
it appears that ssh root login is now enabled in the stock firmware. I
confirmed this by trying ssh to the machine.but, I need the root
password to login. How can I extract the root password from the file system
for the device? I just have the file system unzipped on my hard drive, I
don't have access to it running.

I assume Linux/Linus has made it impossible to get at the root password this
way (e.g. from a copy of the file system), but I thought I would ask anyway
before I try to install some custom firmware on the NAS device.

Thanks,

Mark

adding an rpm to a kickstart repo

2011-07-11 Thread Steven A. DuChene
I have copied the various files off of a Redhat dvd to a kickstart server and
created a working ks.cfg file. I am able to kickstart servers with the default
install files that were on the original DVD media. However I want to be able to
update some of the rpms with newer ones like a newer kernel. I also need to add
one or two custom rpms of my own.

I tried just copying my small add-on rpm into the Packages directory and then
adding that rpm name into my ks.cfg file but I got an error during the
resulting kickstart operation that the rpm was not available. I am pretty sure
I need to update the repo files that tell the system what rpms are available. I
installed the createrepo rpm along with some other dependencies required but I
have not been able to find any definite directions on how to accomplish this.

Has anyone here ever done something like this and can provide some direction on
how to proceed from this point or point me towards some definite documentation
on the process?

stupid perl question

2011-06-23 Thread Steven A. DuChene
I am attempting to do a "tail -f" on a log file that has a new line added to it
every 15 seconds.
I need to parse and process each new line as it is added to the file.

I am trying to use the following example code from cpan to see if the basic
concept will
work using File::Tail but when I run the example code below and add lines to
the file
I get nothing out.

#!/usr/bin/perl

use File::Tail;
$file = File::Tail->new("/home/sad/bin/power_input_stuff.txt");
while (defined(my $line = $file->read))
{
print $line;
}

I am doing the following in another xterm window to add lines to the file:

echo "2011:06:21:15:07:46 57 01 00 a0 04 a0 00 c3 00 a7 00 33 16 01 4e 01 00 00
00 50" >> power_input_stuff.txt

but I am getting NOTHING back in the original window where the perl script is
running.

The above perl code is a near direct copy of the File::Tail example code on
cpan so I would expect it to work.

What am I doing wrong???

Try `stty --help' for more information.

how to reference bash variables inside perl script inside bash script?

2010-06-23 Thread Steven A. DuChene
I am attempting to write what I thought would be a simple wrapper
script around ldapmodify that would allow me to easily reset a user's
password. Inside my bash based wrapper script is a single line of perl
that encrypts the password I input and returns it as a specially formatted
string that then gets output to a LDIF file that is eventually sourced by
ldapmodify.

Then I wanted to be able to run the resulting script by doing:

reset_password george newpasswd

to reset the password in ldap to newpasswd for user account george

My problem is I want to be able to pick up $2 from the command line invocation
of my bash script for the desired password and then pass that into the one line
perl piece. But with all of the single quotes, double quotes, back ticks and
etc. I am not able to get the password value in the $2 to be correctly passed
into the perl one line part of the bash script.

The core part of the script I am having a problem with looks like:

#!/bin/bash

OPASS=$2

PASS=`perl -e 'print("userPassword:
{CRYPT}".crypt("$OPASS","frat-salt")."\n");'`

The actual value of $PASS is supposed to end up looking like:

userPassword: {CRYPT}frJTbxR6L.kgA

I have looked at doing something like this:

#!/bin/bash

perl << 'EOF'
print("userPassword: {CRYPT}".crypt("$OPASS","frat-salt")."\n");
EOF

but I still don't think the bash variable OPASS would get properly evaluated in
the perl invocation.

Any ideas?

free long (approx 30ft) ethernet cables

I am involved in a data center move project and as part of the project
all of the ethernet cabling is being replaced. As such we have a 2ftx2ftx2ft

There might also be some LC to LC fiber cables as well.

I could bring this stuff to the next east side meeting.

Subject: Project Update

Since, so many wanted my project to be posted for the
benefit of all, I’ll start be defining what our first steps are going to
be. I had an opportunity to sit down and discuss my goals and get some advice,
so this is how we have decided to proceed:

    Goal:
Build as much functionality based on Linux into an existing Microsoft SBS 2003 network
to provide redundancy and eventually alternatives to future Microsoft products.

Justification:  I would like
to avoid having to replace infrastructure because Microsoft has decided I need
to upgrade. I would like to make those choices based upon our needs and current
usage.

    Phase
1 - Tasks

1.   Since
Small Business Server 2003 is the critical piece and has the most requirement.  I
will be building a dedicated test box with full functionality to be part of the
sandbox. It will have the OS, Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, and a simple 3 user
domain. This will be loaded on a Dell Power Edge 850 with 3GB Ram and dual
250GB hard drives mirrored to raid 1. I’ll use a single NIC.

2.   I
will be loading CentOS V5.4 on a Dell Optiplex GX270, Samba will be loaded on
this platform. System has 512Mb RAM and 80GB hard drive.

3.   I
will be loading CentOS V5.4 on a Dell Optiplex GX270, QmailToaster will be
loaded on this platform. System has 512Mb RAM and 80GB hard drive.

4.   A
24 port 1Gb Ethernet switch will be allocated for this test environment.

5.   A
loaned IPCop router will serve as gateway and will be assigned a static IP for
access.

Phase 1 – Goal

Build a simple but functional
network containing the elements necessary to demonstrate proof of concept for
this project.

    Timeframe

I expect a week or so to get these
systems operational and then begin the process of consolidating into a single
network and configuring services for use.

    Personally,
I have the challenge of loading CentOS for the first time, done Ubuntu, Debian
Sarge and Mandrake/Mandriva a long time ago…… but this one is new
to me and I’ll have to do it CLI….so might be fun. So got some
reading to do about the OS and how to install/update it.

I’ll post more, as I make
progress.

Sean
Parsons

Anyone find a book at the meeting?

2009-12-13 Thread Steven A. DuChene
At the east side meeting this past week, when everyone was packing up
did anyone find a book? We have been unable to find my son's current
reading book yesterday and today and I cannot recall if we took it
along for him to read or not.

It is a fairly thick book called "Flyte" by Angie Sage.

If anyone seen this at the meeting I would appreciate knowing about
it so we can stop going crazy looking for it around here.

Re: loading fresh system from rpm list?

2009-11-23 Thread Steven A. DuChene
The original system is a VERY minimal install and that is what
the owner wants me to mimic on the second system. He very carefully
went through and removed any packages he did not absolutely need
so rather than duplicate that work I thought I could somehow just
work from his list of rpms on the original system.

Re: loading fresh system from rpm list?

2009-11-23 Thread Steven A. DuChene
I had the owner of the system do a "rpm -qa" and redirect that to a file
so that is the list I have to start with. But the second system has a bare
hard drive so if I boot it to a rescue CD and bring over my rpm list
I can run yum from the rescue shell to build the new system that only
contains the rpms in my original list?

loading fresh system from rpm list?

2009-11-23 Thread Steven A. DuChene
I have been requested to load a duplicate system based on the
list of rpms present on the original system. This is a CentOS
based system so I looked at the kickstart file but rather than
working with a list of rpms it uses a list of higher level
packages that then reference groups of rpms to make up each
package.

Does anyone know of a tool that would allow me to do a fresh
load of a bare system based on a list of desired rpms?

I have used systemimager in the past to pull an exact image
of a system for cloning but this idea has been shot down
by the person who requested this.

Any other tools out there that would do this?

slightly used lc-lc fiber cables

2009-11-14 Thread Steven A. DuChene
I just picked up about 20 -30 LC to LC fiber cables that are slightly used.
If anyone has the means of testing them and needs some I can bring them
to either an east side PLUG meeting or perhaps one of the Saturday
installfests that take place at the university near Fry's Electronics
on Baseline.

I believe the range from 2 - 3 meter long cables but I have not checked for
sure.

Again I do not know if they are good cables or bad cables that have been too
heavily abused and I suggest testing them if possible before putting them
into service. I am giving them away so if they do not function 100% do not
complain to me. :-)

Wireless security (was linux on odd devices)

2009-11-14 Thread Steven A. DuChene
Yes, I realize this whole wireless encryption stuff is just to fool peopleinto believing they are secure.I was in BestBuy a few weeks ago and I noticed a power line networkingproduct they had that seemed like it would be a much better solution toproviding network coverage inside a house. The product claimed thatthere were two point to point devices that plugged into wall outlets andthen a ethernet cable would be plugged into each device. I think thespeeds were slightly better than wireless too.-Original Message-

I tried the OPTIONS="-4" suggestion in the /etc/sysconfig/named file
and restarted named on all my nameservers but it made no difference.
Doing the following:

r...@adm # ssh new75 (or any of the 50 - 70 RHEL5/CentOS5 servers)

takes a LONG time to get a shell prompt. I did confirm that the "-4"
is indeed showing up on the named invocation in a ps list.

weirdness with slow ssh connections (IPv6 related?)

2009-10-28 Thread Steven A. DuChene
I am working on a project with 50 - 70 servers in the AT&T data center
on University. They have either RHEL5U3 or CentOS5U3 on the systems.
I have DNS configured with the normal bind 9 packages that come with
CentOS5U3. My problem is when using ssh to get between the systems
if i use the short name for a system it takes a long time to get to
a shell prompt on the remote system. If I use the fully qualified
domain name or the IP address of I use a "-4" with the short name
I get to a shell prompt immediately. So to illustrate:

r...@adm # ssh new75

takes a LONG time to get shell prompt.

Any of the following get me a shell prompt almost immediately:

r...@adm # ssh -4 new75

r...@adm # ssh new75.wholedomain.here

r...@adm # ssh 10.4.5.6 (IP address of new75 system)

Since the "-4" option seems to have a positive effect I have gone
to each system and made sure the IPv6 kernel modules are not loaded
and the network file in /etc/sysconfig/ has the following line in
it:

NETWORKING_IPV6=no

but that made little or no difference to the problem. The lines
I added to the /etc/modprobe.conf file look like this:

alias net-pf-10 off
alias ipv6 off

I believe it some strange interaction problem between IPv6 and DNS
but I do not have a clear plan on what to try next.

Any suggestions?

Microsoft. Hmmm, perhaps this is just wishful thinking...

OT: TSA Secure Flight?

2009-10-02 Thread Steven A. DuChene
Anyone else get any sort of notice from any airline frequent flyer
programs about some additional information being needed because
of some new "TSA Secure Flight" program?

It appears airlines will now need date of birth and other information
in order to sell you a ticket.

All of this extra regulations from TSA or Homeland Security governement
organizations is just getting too much for anyone concerned about
personal privacy issues.

Re: SATA drive problem

2009-10-01 Thread Steven A. DuChene
The drivers for SATA disk controllers are implemented as part of the SCSIcode tree and thus show up as sdX drives rather than hdXThis is a normal condition. As far as the "ghosting" showing up in Gnome's File Browser I have no clue.-Original Message-
From: Mark Jarvis
Sent: Oct 1, 2009 2:28 AM
To: plug
Subject: SATA drive problem

Up until a couple of days ago, I had 3 EIDE drives and POST reported my
hard drives:

IDE Channel 0 Master     a 120 GB drive
IDE Channel 0 Slave       a 120 GB drive
IDE Channel 1 Master     a 160 GB drive
IDE Channel 1 Slave        a DVD
    IDE Channel 2 Master None
    IDE Channel 3
Master None

Simplifying things, channel 0 Master has my Windows Installation,
Channel 0 Slave my Linux stuff, and Channel 1 Master is a backup/clone
of
Channel 0 Master. Ubuntu sees the three drives as sda, sdb, and sdc.

Monday I picked up a couple of 1.0 TB  SATA drives. Starting slowly, I
added one to Channel 2. I cloned the Windows drive (Channel 0 Master)
to it, pulled the power plug on Channel 0 Master, and changed the boot
sequence in Setup. I also changed the label on one of the partitions on
the new drive. POST reports:

    IDE Channel 0 Master None
IDE Channel 0 Slave       a 120 GB drive
IDE Channel 1 Master     a 160 GB drive
IDE Channel 1 Slave       a  DVD
IDE Channel 2 Master a SATA 1 TB drive
    IDE Channel 3
Master None

Windows works pretty much OK. Booting into Ubuntu 9.04, I was surprised
that Gnome's File Browser shows ghosts of the old channel 0
Master--complete with the labels of the old partitions, and does not show the new drive. I
brought up Gnome's gparted. It saw the new drive just fine--as sda! I
had expected almost anything--except sda. This is not a "real work"
Linux installation and besides, /home is in a different partition, so I
could just re-install and that would probably fix things, but I'd
rather make what's there work correctly.

Questions:
    1) Why did a SATA drive on Channel 3 show up as sda?
    2) How can I kick Gnome's File Browser into dropping the ghosts and
showing the contents of the new drive?

I guess that all of my admin/reference books are out of date, because I
can't find anything in them that helps. The MAN pages would probably
help, but I don't know where to start.

Any help, pointers to where I can find explanations, etc. will be much
appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark Jarvis

RE: correct way to set timezone & clock/date? more info

2009-08-25 Thread Steven A. DuChene
Hmm, stranger & stranger.

I just tried the SAME ntpdate command on a machine INSIDE my network
and it works just fine there so that eliminates as far as I can tell having a
problem
with the Cox external network access. The ntpdate command hangs only
on the gateway system.

RE: correct way to set timezone & clock/date? SOLVED? (sort of)

2009-08-25 Thread Steven A. DuChene
OK, I think I found the problem with ntpd not getting any peers from my server
list.
I was starting ntpd from the command line with the following syntax:

ntpd -I eth0 -D 4 -n

eth0 is my internal network. I got to looking at the "no interface found for..."
messages and thought I would try adding a -I eth1 where eth1 is my external
outside network connection through the Cox cable modem. So now my command
syntax is:

ntpd -u ntp -I eth0 -I eth1 -D 4

Once I added the "-I eth1" I now seem to have the three external peers listed
when I run "ntpq -p"

This still does not explain why ntpdate hangs with no replies however. The
ntpdate command sequence I used does not list anything other than the
servers like this:

ntpdate -v -d dewey.lib.ci.phoenix.az.us ntp.drydog.com

no restrictions on the interface or anything so I am still not understanding
why that does not work. Plus when I try to start the ntp service from the init
script there is no restrictions on the interface like I was using from the
command line.

Anyway I think there is still some issue with the ntpdatge command hanging
and since the ntp init script always calls ntpdate before starting ntpd I am
still not going to be able to enable the ntp service on startup.

Some progress has been made however.

Re: correct way to set timezone & clock/date?

2009-08-25 Thread Steven A. DuChene
Hmm, in the debug output from the ntp server startup on my gateway system I see
the following:

addto_syslog: Cannot find existing interface for address 148.167.132.200
addto_syslog: Cannot find existing interface for address 66.27.60.10

among the other messages there. The addresses 148.167.132.200 and 66.27.60.10
corresponds to the two ntp servers I have set in my ntp.conf file on that
system.

So it seems that the ntpd daemon does indeed start up but it still is not able
to contact
either of the ntp servers I have configured.

NUTS!

Just a guess but I am thinking this is a Cox network thing. That is just a
guess though.
Is anyone else here on a Cox cable modem able to sync to a external ntp server?

Re: correct way to set timezone & clock/date?

2009-08-25 Thread Steven A. DuChene
OK, I may be wrong again. If I start ntpd by hand on my gateway/firewall system
it does indeed start and I am able to sync to that system from the other client
systems on my network but when I do a ntpq on it and type "peers" the only
thing listed there is the LOCAL (0) one. Unless I am mistaken it should also
list the two other ntp servers I have configured in the ntp.conf file. Right?

Re: correct way to set timezone & clock/date?

2009-08-25 Thread Steven A. DuChene
I mis-spoke below. It is not the cable modem thata has a time display but
rather the cable TV box
that has nothing to do with my network.

I have discovered something else. If I start ntpd by hand on my external
gateway server
(the SuSE-10.1 system), it seems to work just fine. It seems to synchronize
with the
ntp servers and provides replies to my local network systems.

It seems that is is just the actual ntpdate command to those external servers
that does not
function and hangs everytime I try it. My guess is if I commented out the calls
to ntpdate
in the ntp init script everything would function just fine.

Why would ntpd connect and work fine but ntpdate will not function?

Hmm, Here it never starts doing those transmit packets after locating the
servers.

I just tried it with the firewall turned off and I still get the same result so
it must not be the firewall.
I am on a Cox cable modem. I wonder if Cox blocks NTP on their network?

ntpdate -v -d dewey.lib.ci.phoenix.az.us
ntp.drydog.com

and it looked for and found both hosts but then just sits

Re: correct way to set timezone & clock/date?

2009-08-25 Thread Steven A. DuChene
No, my external firewall system is a SuSE-10.1 system.

I tried tailing /var/log/messages while starting the ntp service but
I do not see anything being logged there regarding ntp activity.

There is a ntp file in /var/log but it is zero length and has a access
date on the file from a few months ago. Is there anywhere else where
ntp activity gets logged or a way to turn up the debug level on the ntpd
process?

Re: correct way to set timezone & clock/date?

2009-08-25 Thread Steven A. DuChene
Hmm, so I did the following:

# iptables -A input_ext -p tcp -m tcp --dport 123 -j ACCEPT

and then tried starting ntp services again but it still seems to hang
when trying to get the initial date and time. So adding a rule to the
firewall for tcp access on port 123 seems to have made no difference
to my problem.

Re: correct way to set timezone & clock/date?

2009-08-25 Thread Steven A. DuChene
Hmm, I have added these systems to the ntp.conf file on my external gateway
system
that serves as a firewall for my network but when I try to start the ntp
service it sits
there forever trying to get an initial date and time from those systems.

This external system has iptables rules and the ones that have to do with udp
port 123
are the following:

-A input_ext -p udp -m pkttype --pkt-type broadcast -m udp --dport 123 -j
ACCEPT
-A input_ext -p udp -m udp --dport 123 -j ACCEPT

I am assuming I must have some sort of firewall issue blocking the acquisition
of
the date and time from the external servers but it would seem like the above
rules
that were already present in my firewall setup would have made that a non-issue.

Anyone got any ideas or suggestions about this?

correct way to set timezone & clock/date?

2009-08-24 Thread Steven A. DuChene
I have a few systems here in my home that are either fedora or opensuse
installs.
I was setting up ganglia last night to add some monitoring to my home setup
and discovered I had some issues with clock skew. When I got to looking I
noticed
that the timezones were set to MST and most of the systems were off by about
a hour. What is the correct way to setup the timezone correctly for systems
located
here in Phoenix where daylight savings time changes do not take place?

Also if you have a small home network what methods do everyone usually use
to keep clocks in sync across the network? I.E. if you use NTP what externally
reliable NTP server do you use?

ARGH!

OK, I did the following:

setsebool -P httpd_can_network_connect_db=1
setsebool -P httpd_can_network_connect=1

on the Fedora9 apache server box and now it works.

Thanks all. Why this has to be off by default or not well known that
it needs to be altered from it's default state is beyond me.

Re: mysql_connect won't when run from web server

2009-05-25 Thread Steven A. DuChene
As I said, on the Apache server I can run the php script just fine and
it connects to the remote mysql server just fine. Both servers are here
on my local internal network and there is no firewall between them.

So to be clear on the Apache system I can run the php mysql connect script
just fine like so:

Apache$ php ./mysql_php_dbconnectscript.php

and it works fine. I really believe this eliminates any port or firewall
or ping or FQDN or localhost issues between the two boxes.

BTW not that I really think it makes any difference but the Apache system
is running Fedora9 while the Mysql system is a OpenSuSE-10.1 system.
Both are running the standard distribution rpm packages for the various
bits&pieces (apache, mysql, php, and etc).

mysql_connect won't when run from web server

2009-05-24 Thread Steven A. DuChene
Hello all:
I have a php to mysql database connection script that I am having a problem
with.
I have two systems. One is running apache and also happens to be my desktop
system.
Call this one system Apache. The other system is running mysql and let's call
this
one Mysql.

the connection script is very simple:

If I run this script from the command line on the Apache system like so:

$ php testmysqlconnect_script.php

and it works fine. However if I run the script from the web browser open on the
Apache desktop and point it at
http://localhost/~meuser/testmysqlconnect_script.php
I get a connection error. Just to confirm I have also used the following mysql
command from the command line on the Apache system and it works fine as well:

mysql --host=Mysql -u someuser -p tmp

and entered the exact same user name as is in my script and I am able to connect
just fine. I have tried looking at the output from php_info() on the Apache web
server and it looks normal but I could be missing something.

Anyone have any ideas of what I might be over looking???

Until then I did find a Firefox extension called UnMHT that did a pretty

Well somehow some brain-dead web designer at MCC has managed to put
a Mime encoded syllabus online for their students. The actual file
I downloaded had a *.mht file extension and contained in that was
various bits of Mime encoded crap. One section was even base64
stuff. The bit I was able to extract from another Mime encoded bit
was the actual HTML. I am guessing this stuff is all part of that
wonderful bit of MS web publishing technology crap known as
Sharepoint or other similar MS embrace&extend wonderfulness.

You can try this Toaster SPAM decoder (it will readily tell you if it's
decodable as Decode quoted-printable encoded text):

http://www.toastedspam.com/decodeqp

It should be noted that quoted-printable encoded text is generally associated
with EMAIL, not Word?

But I don't own Dreamweaver and I see from checking the Adobe
site for Dreamweaver it only runs on MS WinBlows and MaOSuX.
I am really looking for a solution that will work on Linux! :-)

There must be some set of scripts somewhere that will do this.
I cannot POSSIBLY be the first person who has run into this and
wants to clean up text or html output from MS Office.

I tried searching through google and freshmeat but I must not
be putting in the right search terms.

how to sanitize MS Word HTML output?
