I havn't been able to find anything to tell me this for sure(I'm probably not putting the right keywords into google). The 3400c and Kanga (and the 2400c) drives are hot-swappable, meaning cd-roms/floppy drives/Zip drives (just the external floppy on the 2400c) can be swapped (floppy plugged/unplugged on the 2400c) without the laptop being shut down or asleep. The drive does have to be empty, however. Officially Apple recommends that warm swapping (a.k.a. while asleep) be done on them, however. The 190 series, 5300 series and 1400 series can be warm-swapped, drives have to be empty as well, although Apple recommends that these laptop be shut down before swapping. xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo Ivy F., AL Roll Tide! Re: Newbie having problems with 2400c - Help needed
Most of the time, my 2400c (180/112/3) is powered by a Duo 2300c adapter that is rated at 36W. I have also occasionally used another adapter which came with my 2300c and which is rated at 25W. This adapter, which actually might be the one that originally came with a 280c, isn't quite up to the job, though. It will allow you to run a 2400c, but it won't at the same time charge the battery. However, if the machine is off o.n., it will do a pretty good job at recharging the 2400's battery. Good luck, P. -Original Message- From: Brian Mahoney [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PowerBooks powerbooks@mail.maclaunch.com Sent: Sat, 03 Dec 2005 21:23:14 -0500 Subject: Re: Newbie having problems with 2400c - Help needed Tom Wilkinson wrote: I found out from the seller that I could use a Duo adapter from my 280c, so I did this. Thanks for all the suggestions, but we have pretty much established it is not a problem with the adapter. The adapters used are known, good, adapters that do work with the 2400c. The problem is the 2400c has gone into some type of permanent sleep. Tom -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: newbie with PB 170
THese are hard to find, however I did happen to pick up a couple at the last MIT Swapfest I went to. These machines shipped with a 40mb or 80mb drive originally which still got for between $10-$20. The Entire 1xx series save for the oddball 150 and the 190 which was built a couple years later, all use a 2.5 SCSI drive. These pretty much look identical to a modern notebook/ laptop drive as new laptops use an ATA 2.5 drive and they look quite similar save for the connectors which are different. I picked up a couple 2.5 SCSI drives which are about 120mb each, so if you are interested I can format one with an operating system for your machine so that you can pop it in and use it. The installation can literally be done in three minutes once you get the hang of it compared to modern laptops which can take hours...see new iBook... You will also need a Torx T-8 screwdriver as well as a Torx- T-10 version which are just two different sizes respectively. You may find that either of them will take out the four Torx screws on the bottom of the machine as these have never seemed as a defined size, but you will need the size 8 one to take out the screw on the back near all the ports. Once you have the five screws holding the top and bottom halves together, pry the back (ports on it) end apart about two inches and reach in and carefully unplug the display connector and then you can work your way around the frame to the front to separate the front half of the case which gets easier the more times the machine has been opened, just do not totally snap the connectors in doing so. The smaller one (screwdriver) usually is then used again on the inside to unscrew the bracket securing the hard drive and the floppy drive in place. Be careful when tightening or loosening the silver screws on the inside though as I found that the connections that the threads for the base that the screw goes into can break off quite easily if you tighten it too hard. Good luck with everything and e-mail me offlist if you are interested in the drive which I can format for you with OS 7.5 (free) or 7.1 for testing and evaluation unless you have a license for it. Overall the 170 and most of the 1xx series are very capable machines, just try to avoid the 150 (not looking to start a flame war) as it was quite compromised in several ways. Dan writes, You can find the 7.5.3 full install floppies and 7.5.5 upgrade floppies both for free from Apple's own website. Okay, cool, now that you mention the free 7.5.3 and 7.5.5 upgrades, here's something I've been meaning to post to the list for the last couple of days. Vital stats: PowerBook 190 OS 7.5.2 8 MB RAM. I already have the aforementioned free downloads. I want to take my PB to 7.5.5 so I can do a printer port network with my 7200 (a slow means of backing up the PB so I've heard on here, but it'll do for me), and I know that I have to do this upgrade in a 2-step process: go to 7.5.3 first, and then bring it up to 7.5.5. I downloaded the upgrades on my 7200 and used the Disk Copy utility to make the two floppies of 7.5.3. The utility told me that the Make Floppy operation was successful on both of them. The problem: The PB reads the disks perfectly well, but 7.5.3 will not install. It says that my system can not be upgraded, even though I was sure to specify that I wanted the installation to go on the HD. When it first pops up after clicking agree on the software agreement, it shows the 7.5.3 floppy and I have to switch disk to tell the computer I want to do the upgrade on the HD. Yet in the About 7.5.3 Rev 2 document, it says that the upgrade is for, among other Macs, PBs with OS 7.5.2 and Enabler 1.2 or higher (my Enabler is 1.2.4 so I think that qualifies). And, yes, I also followed the About document's instructions of going into the Extensions Manager and making sure it was set to 7.5.2 before I attempted the upgrade. Any ideas? As for powerbooks - I did a file transfer a little earlier this evening with my PB190 and an 8100/80 the exact same way, and my 190 is running 7.5.3 It may be well worth turning filesharing on the 7200 with appletalk set to the printer port, and connect the two machines with printer cable - set the PB to appletalk via printer port too, and the 7200 should appear in the chooser. I've shared from OSX 10.2 to a 7.1 mac the same way, too (with the appropriate settings in OSX to allow appletalk-only filesharing, which is what the older macs can all do by default). Of course you can do it on every mac ever made that has the serial ports (I think). Certainly for a more modern mac like the 190. Since you already said you don't have text-to speech, and now you also cant get this working, I suspect you have a rather incomplete installation of the OS. Re: newbie
I have a Powerbook 190, 24MB RAM, 500MB HD I'd like to know where I can find voice recognition and text-to speach software for the Powerbook. If you have special interest in voice recognition, you may wish to join the MacVoice E-mail Discussion List as follows: http://www.themacintoshguy.com/lists/MacVoiceFAQ.html The two major programs for Macintosh, IBM ViaVoice and MacSpeech iListen, may not work well, if at all, on a PowerBook 190 because of its limited capabilities. Not only do those programs require PowerPCs, they require pretty beefy ones at that. G3s or better are really best. PlainTalk is Apple's version of speech recognition as it pertains to controlling your Mac with your voice. It won't translate your speech into a Word document like ViaVoice, but it will allow you to open programs, empty the trash, and do anything you can write an AppleScript to do (which is really pretty close to just about anything you could want to do on a Mac - except dictating a novel into MS Word, of course). I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure PlainTalk requires either an AV Quadra (660AV or 840AV) or a PowerPC based Mac. In either case, the 190 is pretty underpowered for the speech-related capabilities of the Mac OS. Text-to-Speech should work fine, though. And if you are adventurous, there are even Spanish language versions! Not sure about the other European languages... Re: Newbie Issues with Duo 2300c
Message-Id: [EMAIL PROTECTED] From: Brian Andrews [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Newbie Issues with Duo 2300c Date: Tue, 3 Feb 2004 19:12:05 -0500 Hi, I just picked up a Duo 2300c from the LEM Swap list. It arrived with a cracked left front (battery holder) and a 1 stripe of white pixels that runs across the entire screen, about 1 down from the top. Is there any way to fix these dead pixels? I've tried massaging the screen and I've removed the keyboard and reset the ribbon cable. Nothing has worked. Are there more cables to the LCD? My second issue is that I can not run JPEGView 3.3.1. I'm running OS 8.1 and JPEG View crashes at launch with Error Code 3. Any clues on how I can fix this? I'm new to these older Mac OS. Thanks, Brian I don't know if a similar remedy will work for you, but ever since I received my PB 190 the display would generate a comb-like row of white pixel-wide vertical lines on the lower half of the screen if I handle the lid a little too roughly, which goes away if I firmly pinch the left side of the display housing approximately three inches from the top. I speculate that doing so seats back some surface mounted display circuitry inside the housing that somehow became loose. Hardly happens now since I know what causes it and how to avoid or fix it (after weeks of hair-tearing trial-by-errors). BTW, I don't bother with JPEGView which my OS 8.1 PB 190 defaults to for any new images which is irritating to me since I think PictureViewers' quicker and smoother. Since Mac OS Easy Open doesn't do the job with my preference, I change any new images' file type to OGLE via Graphic Converter or File Buddy. Good luck! Re: Hard Drive Space (was Re: Newbie, couple questions...)
Brian writes, I have a Powerbook 1400c/166, OS 9.1, 15.10 gig HD. It's pretty simple, really, and I'm not trying to be condescending. I have Office 2001 on the drive, as well as Appleworks 5 which I use when on battery power since it uses much less juice than Office. Also on the drive is Adobe Photoshop 5, AOL 5.0 and the standard web surfing programs that come with OS 9. Then there is Norton Utilities, various other utility programs, and a load of games, such as Absolute zero and various other older classic OS games. Then there is Real PC, which takes up a hefty amount of HD space. Thus far, I still; have 12.46 gigs of HD, but plan to add a compatible version of iTunes to play loads of music on (i plan to add most of my music collection to this book). Furthermore, I plan to permanently load a version of Street Atlas for use when I'm on the road and need directions. And that is only what I've thought of to date. Odds are that i won't even half fill the drive before I end up replacing it with a new iBook, but I am still using the book as best as I can just the same. No, I don't think you're being condescending -- and I suppose I should have added smileys or some form of disclaimer or apology in advance type phrasing in that post of mine because *I* hadn't meant to come off as nasty, smart-ass or condescending to ANYONE in here, in any way. If that IS how it looked, I profoundly apologize to you, Brian, and everybody else in here who saw it that way. The truth is, about 98-99% of the time I DO think before I post to a group (and check my post to make sure it's polite; editing it if I'm not sure), but this time I didn't. Truthfully, I was just so INCREDULOUS to see yet another person who had what IMO was an impossibly humongous amount of HD space mentioning plans to practically sextuple it and I just went off at the mouth -- or should I say keyboard. I simply couldn't imagine why anybody -- not just the fellow in question -- would need all that space. Again I apologize for being a jerk, I assure you it was inadvertent. Disclaimer!: I don't mean to condescend to anyone now any more than I did last night, this is just a description of my own computer usage, attitudes and opinions, to explain why I was so incredulous/shocked by all this need for tons of HD space. Here goes: I don't use apps like Photoshop, play computer games or do anything musical with either of my computers, nor do I use any MicroBorg (but I thought THAT at least put me in the majority on a Mac PB list -- guess not huh? ha ha) -- apps which I *have* heard eat up a lot of HD space...Though the uses up tons of HD space isn't why I don't use them: I just have no interest in Photoshop (I'm not artistically talented or into picture taking at all), playing computer games (just don't care for that) or getting/listening to music with the computer (I'm something of an old fart and happy with my record and tape collection; don't like what passes for music these days). Lastly I find Mac apps much easier to use than MicroBorg, who I hate anyway. Well, obviously mistakenly, I'd thought that if a person could word-process, do email, web surf, chat and run utilities when needed, all of which I can do on my PB's tiny little 500-something MB HD and still have room to spare, well, those to me seemed the portable necessities. My PB isn't my main computer (the 7200 on my desk is, and any work I do on the PB gets transferred to the 7200 when I get home) so maybe that's another reason I don't need tons of HD space on the PB. Rather, the PB just to take with me when I go out of town and want to do a few things like write, check/reply to my email, look up something on the web or see if any of my Net buddies are online and chat with them a bit if they are. But perhaps, and I didn't think of this either -- for some folks, their PBs ARE their main computers? In which case, it DOES make sense to have more HD space on them, no matter what apps they're into. I mean, if I had to transfer ONLY my MOST important apps and data from my 7200 to my PB, I wouldn't have room on the PB with that tiny little HD! :-) OK, I really and truly hope my apologies are accepted and now you know were I was coming from when I took off like that last night. ~Yersinia. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... There was a time when I would have a agreed with you, and I'm far from an old fart. My 1400 is definately not my main computer. My main computer right now is a Compaq presario tower, but that decreases everyday as my iMac gathers more and more data I use in normal daily use. generally I use the 1400 for writing this list, since it's version of AOL doesn't support all the crap that makes the newer versions of AOL incompatitble with this list. Also, my job is one where I sit around in my car all day long with nothing much to do. While I do have a CD player in the Car, I also tend to spend alot of time at relative's house during the week since driving from home to work is over double the distance than from there. So, if I have my music loaded on the 1400 I can plug in my headphones and chill out listening to my music before I hit the sack. I have much music that's newer, but I ahve extremely eclectic tastes, which results in much much music for me that I like. To put it another way, though many people say this, I truly mean it- my music likes cover everything from Mozart to Metallica and then some. It's easier to just say what I DON'T like- most country and rap, although there are exceptions to that. I don't have much use for this computer for business needs, but seeing as I got the laptop for $112, I couldn't resist it. One MORE thing: I have an obsession with taking things apart and trying to improve them, which means I keep busy constantly upgrading the computers I have, when I'm not busy filling my time with my other equally eclectic hobbies. In any event, despite the fact that it's not my main computer, it does see alot of use, until I finally get myself a new iBook, and nearly everything I do will got to that computer. One of the few things that is left for the PC to do is music: yes, the macs do iTunes, but the PC has a program called Smart Music loaded, which acts as accompaniment for me when I play music (as in a musical instrument). Once that goes on the iBook, the only use the PC will have will be Games. The iMac will most likely stay that the relative's house where I stay during the week, and I haven't decided what I'm going to do with the 1400. After rambling so much, I'll finally get back to the point. It may seem superfluous to have so much space, or other similar traits to a computer (my powerbook is also upgraded to a G3 processor), all this added power adds to the usability to the computer. The more I can do, the more the computer is worth it to me. Brian -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... It has 32 MB of ram. What type of ram does it take, if it is standard 72 pin simms I can upgrade it to 64.. I don't NEED to run a newer OS, I was just surious as to what it is capable of. 8.1 will be fine, but I have to get the SCSI cable so I can use the cd rom drive, and I will still need an 8.1 cd... To be honest, I can't see much point in trying to expand it further than it is at the moment. I'm currently running my 5300 on 24mb of RAM and OS8.6. Hard Drive Space (was Re: Newbie, couple questions...)
Steve writes, Once I've got my act together and upgraded the Pismo to a 40gb internal drive, I'll stick the existing 6gb from the Pismo in the 5300. Good heavens, what on earth does anyone need all that HD space for?! My PB 190 only has the 500-something MB drive it came with, I haven't yet gotten around to deleting all of the MicroBorg apps the prior owner had on it (which I don't use, but originally kept because I thought maybe I'd try them), I just added a bunch of apps I absolutely needed to have and I STILL have 320.9 MB available on it! And it took me almost four YEARS to come within 600 MB of filling up the 1.2 GB drive that came on my 7200!! Sorry, I know this is none of my business, what you keep on your HD, but I've been seeing a lot of people in here with various PBs and talking about these totally humongous HDs, either having or planning to get them, and I can't help but be curious as to what in heck takes up so much space! My PB does word processing, email, websurfing, IRC chat, AOL instant messaging and I have Norton Utils on it also, so I have all the necessary apps stored on it to do those things. And I keep my stories in progress on it too; what's the point of a laptop if I can't write when I'm not home -- to me that's everything I could possibly want to do on a computer, and I still have plenty of space on the HD! One other Q I do have about these humongous HDs I keep hearing about in here -- how on earth do you format them? I ask because my boyfriend installed a second HD in my 7200. It's a 2 GB drive but when I initiated the formatting, I could only format it to Mac Extended Format 1.1 GB. ~Yersinia. There are two major products that come out of Berkeley: LSD and UNIX. I have a Powerbook 1400c/166, OS 9.1, 15.10 gig HD. Hi I just purchased two 5300c's. Is there a site that shows how to open a case and upgrade these? These are about on the web, what you are after is a Powerbook 5300 Service Manual - I'm sure google should come up with it. You need one of those funny looking (Torx?) screwdrivers to open it though, and watch the bits of case fly off when you do! Are the IDE HDs limited to a 2gig boot limit or under 8.1 as SCSI HDs are in the 7100/8100 cpus? No, you can put a massive HDD in the system - however, you will have trouble if you use SCSI disk mode (accessing your Mac as a disk connected to another Mac's SCSI bus) with disks bigger than 4 Gig. In my opinion 8.1 is a lot more stable than 7.5 or 7.6, so I'd use at least MacOS 8.1 Can I upgrade the video ram on the MB? Re: Newbie basic question
Greetings all, A newbie to the list and to the world of PowerBooks in general. I have a simple connectivity question: I have a newly-found Duo 280c in great shape; it has a microdock (eMachines/SuperMac), floppy adapter, etc. I also have a good external CD-ROM unit to connect, with the obligatory HD-30 adapter; the only way I can see to plug this into the 280c is through a minidock or full dock. Is there any other procedure, or a port I'm not seeing? Many thanks in advance. Best regards, Dana -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
