Old wheelchair bases, make for great battle bot frames. Check with a

Hello,

I put my 1st use chair on the seat of my Polaris Ranger.. And then I use a
winch across the rollbar's above to set me in the seat..For the 2nd one, my
work comp people asked me to keep it for a while as a spare in case my 3rd
chair goes kaput. But when it's time that one will be replacing the one in
the Ranger, just because it would be handier than the one that's in there
now..
I called the teacher that teaches robotics at our local high school but
didn't get any call back,, I'm assuming he's not interested. Because it's a
sip and puff chair I looked at giving it to a charity that deals with the
disabled but they already had a pretty good inventory.

I know that many quads only break their necks and become quads, but some of us
break a lot of things. I was hurt and had a severe head injury, a broken neck,
back, several ribs, left arm and leg, spleen, fingers and nose. Arthritis
became an issue after about 28 years post. I have to use a back brace because I
have disc disintegrating disease or DDD. I get AD from just being positioned
wrong.  I am not looking for sympathy.  I'm sick of that. I do know that other
quads have similar problems and are fighting unseen pain with little help
because they have lived so long. I've never met two quads exactly alike. The
one thing that we do have in common is a desire to be treated with the same
respect that so many people take for granted. I don't want pity, just a low air
loss mattress that was promised to me last year. You can't spend pity.Best
wishes, John s.

I'm writing this for any new quads on the list because I see things differently
than most of those who have responded to this post.
I will be 33 years post injury on August 15th--C5-6 complete quad due to diving
accident. At this time I would love nothing more than to someday be the oldest
living quad. I suppose I can say that because I don't have the debilitating
pain or issues many on this list speak of. I'm not saying this to undermine
their struggles--I know I'm very lucky.
I get up every day looking forward to the adventure ahead. I am thankful for
every moment I have and I try to radiate that positive vibe to every person I
meet. I don't always succeed, and I have bad days just like everybody else.
Still, my greatest fear is dying too soon, not dying too old.
As others have said here: they were fine living as quads for years and then
things just fell apart. I know that is a possibility for me, too. That
realization adds even greater urgency to every day--I want to experience
everything I possibly can while I'm healthy.
So, for any new quads on this list, let me be testimony that life as a quad can
be full, happy, active and rewarding, even after 33 years. I only speak for
myself, but I know I'm not alone.

For the first 22 years of my Quadom, things went pretty well. No sores, no
pain, no depression. Then on 7-14-93 I crashed head-on into a large maple tree.
It broke me up pretty bad. Shattered my knees, my ankle, leg, messed up my
hips..and basically put me at death's door for a few days. Wasn't
pleasant. That was the beginning of the problems I have today. It was tolerable
at first, but the last5-6 years have been awful. Doc told me this would happen.
And he was right. Now I have some big decisions to make. Not good.

I have the same feeling and sounds like good health, no pain etc., as Don. I am
c 5/6 ish maybe some 7 38 yrs post. I do find it harder mentally and some
physical as I age. I have to fight not to get depressed over things I can't do
as I see others who are able bodied doing all the fun things.and I worry (A
big one as we age) But I have a great husband and home I live in a great
community and have friends and good suport. So I can't complain too much. I
does break my heart to hear of all the pain issues and sores etc. and I do
understand some of it as I have had sores, sweating issues ect. I do have back
pain but it is not too bad. I Ice it often when I get in bed and the Myofascial
release deep tissue massage has helped me more than anything. Breathing, pain,
NO sweating (2 yrs now) and I am finally 90% straighter. I took 2 yrs of
therapy but it was many years of getting this way. Anyway, like Don, I hope
this helps some young quads.
Kind regards,

I sleep on my left side. Any other position is too painful. I use a lightly

Me too, Bobbie. When I wake up in the morning, I hurt so bad all over that I
just don't think I can do it. Then I roll over on my back and the muscle spasms
begin. They hurt like hell and take my breath away. When I am finally in my
chair it takes a good two hours before I can function. Then fatigue hits me and
I hang my head for another hour of sleep.if the pain has eased off. This is
every dayevery stinking day. Then muddle through the day till bedtime, then

run away.

very well put Dave.  I have also noticed how someone recovers pretty nicely or
gets a little more return than others it might be because of their faith. Don't
they understand that it implies those of us in don't get better don't have
faith or don't have strength of character.

Every time someone says I look better than most quads, I am quick to say I have
a good support system. Not everyone can say that. I used to do more in the
advocacy area, but over the last several years I haven't been healthy enough to
do so. I'm hoping that I can get back to my old self. Right now I'm having a
few bad days myself, but since my colostomy surgery I am doing a bit better
than I was before.

These special quads have learned the art of giving people what they want to see

support...they have much family, friends, checkbook, donations, caregivers.
The average quad just doesn't have all that behind them and sadly the disabled

This large church I attended a few years back tried to make me sit in the
"wheelchair" section of church so I could see better. I will not sit in any
particular section due to my color or disability. I made sure to sit on the far
end of the seats so I don't block anyones view. I ended up meeting a great girl
there and we did many things together. If I would have sat in the wheelchair
section I would have never met that girl. People need to understand that people
using a chair have the same wants and needs as anyone else. We have the same
human value as anyone else sucking air.

Larry, Ron & Danny you guys nailed it on the head! It would help with a little
more finances because all disabilty equipment & supplies are ten times marked
up. You get a lot of support when you first get injured then they stop coming
one by one. Everyone sees you doing pretty good but that's the end of old
friends. Most of my friends are new, after my injury. Thank goodness for my
family cuz i have 4 grandkids but they are getting to be teenagers.

Wow Danny, that is some real ignorance right there. We cannot will something to
happen no matter how hard we try. A million dollar athlete breaks a leg bone
and it is a terrible tragedy. As he recuperates he is praised and lauded for
his amazing strength and determination. He heals completely and his story
becomes a book, an ESPN special, and a constant storyline of courage.
Meanwhile, we quads face hell everyday with zero hope of getting better. Such a
"story of courage" makes me want to gag. A simple broken leg would be like a
toothache to us. Nothing but a temporary nuisance. As I age, quad life gets
harder, money gets tighter, and my sunny outlook becomes more and more cloudy.
I know I am rambling, but you guys know exactly what I am talking about.
Courage, peeps.

Someone on this forum said, "quadriplegics are like snowflakes, they are all
different."

I sometimes feel offended when some person who has a different injury than mine
and much more support than I have is presented in the news as a role model. The
TV show seem to present the idea that the reason this person is overcoming
their difficulties is because of their strength of character and positive
mental attitude and persistence. The implication is: the rest of us just are
not trying hard enough and have a bad attitude.

The reality is: some of us are having a pretty rough go of it. But nobody wants
to see a story about that on television.

I agree with you oldies. I'm 59 42 years post and can't remember when I didn't
hurt ... somewhere.
I take morphine like candy.
Lately, I've been getting up just every other day because my butt has been
sensitive (for the lack of a better word) and even with that I got an open sore
on my butt. G! And I'm only up for 7-8 freaking hours!

I went to brace clinic at Kessler Institute because of my bad scoliosis getting
worse. The doctor said from my MRI this is very minor, well it doesn't feel
minor let me tell you.
So I'm off for PT and maybe a new back on my chair.

The best medicine was yesterday when I saw my 42 year old nephew, from Florida,
whom I haven't seen in 20 years. He came with his new wife Eileen and his
youngest son 17 Dylan.
The time flew but when they left I was extremely exhausted.Bobbie

About six years ago I decided to move and that was a big mistake. I had
already graduated from college and really had no long-term goals set, but I
was still active in my community. I thought I would be able to get right
back into community activism, but I don't really like the system up here.

I used the blog quite a bit, but that is even become something that I don't
endeavor to do. So for the last two years I can say I haven't been feeling
my normal self. I still feel like I'm about 30 (the age I was when I was
injured), but I need to get some long-term goals set. That seems to be what
drives me.

I'm 48 and in April I'll be 18 years post injury.

PS I do keep myself busy reading and watching good television. I tried
exercise my mind when doing so.

I can honestly say that in the last 2 yrs (31 yrs. post injury) I have been in
more pain, I have noticed that with more pain meds comes more pain, kinda a
rebound effect. So i am trying to limit my use and it is helping at least with
the tiredness and memory loss etc. We are the pioneers in this for sure.

Sometimes, when I am in too much pain to do anythinug, listening to an audio
book is a way to distract myself. Also, when I'm doing good, I can listen to a
book on tape while I sit and try to clean something. Otherwise, if I read a
book, I don't get  much done because I am unable to leave a good book.

Me too, but meds don't seem to help with that for me.
Then when I stretch it makes my arms tingle even more.
One cold draft just ruins my day.
The hair on my arms stay up and then when rubbing on my shirt or a warm breeze goes by my arms tingle more.
Though I do realize how good I have it here in the sun. To me, 65 and sunny is better than 80 and cloudy.

Me too!
It the soreness in my muscles and bones plus the b-program that's the biggest issue.
Today I must have been seated slightly off because my neck and right between my shoulders are really bad today. I don't know how you cold weather quads can do it. Here in AZ it's just cooling off and a few cooler cloudy days and my muscles just tighten up. It's 75 today and hazy and I'm freezing.
My b-program has been really slowing down, sweating more, etc. Making me feel like looking into "bagging it" if you know what I mean. That just seams drastic though. I'm going to switch back to Enemeez from Magic Bullets, maybe a change will help.

Tougher indeed Tom.    I was hurt in '67 at age 19 and have been going pretty strong until about 3 years ago.   My job being given to India didn't help - not a big demand for a 60 year old quad with cheap Asian labor flooding the place.   Now hopefully my SS doesn't go away or freeze for too long I'm just getting tired of it all.

I found the list initially in 97 or 98. I was on the list for a couple of
years and then only lurked for about three or four years. Over the last two
years I have been actively participating and lurking off and on. It used to
be quite a bit to handle when I had it going to my home computer or my yahoo
e-mail address, but once I started using Gmail exclusively for this list, it
became significantly easier for me to look at all of the subjects.

This list has been invaluable to me over the years and is often a crutch
which I lean on heavily.
Thanks everyone.

I think it sometime after 1993 as that was when I first got the Internet.
One of my aides found the quadlist for me. I remember reading it but I didn't
really post. I was really happy when she found this for me because it made
me feel like there were a lot of other people in my same situation that I
could relate to. I live in a large metropolitan area of Kansas City in a
suburb
in Kansas , but I don't really know hardly any quadriplegics. Shortly after
I got out of the hospital at KU and was through my rehabilitation at Yonkers
in Des Moines Iowa. We had monthly meetings at each other's houses but that
didn't last very long and we did not really keep in contact. There's only
one person that I still hear out through my mother, because his mother is good
friends with one of my mother's friends and he is a great artist. He has a
show every year in a park, but it is always on the day when my best friend,
who is the main person that takes me out, is not off. One year my
sister-in-law take me but we got there when it was over, so I never got to see
any of
his artwork.

I don't really remember when I first started posting. Thank you so much
Jim, for starting this wonderful list and for all the other participants, who
make it what it is today. The wealth of information that everyone provides
makes it a great place to be.

2008-01-02 Thread Lori Michaelson
It was quite easy to know when I got on this list because it was shortly
after I got on the Internet. In early 1995I did not even know a single
thing about the Internet. Then I signed up but ended up being in the
hospital for two weeks with my shunt surgeries. I remember thinking, lying
there in the hospital, that I had just signed up for the Internet and was
paying for it but could not use it or learn how to use it!

I usually can keep track of things (anything) by where I was or who I was
with at the time something happened or occurred. Or categories. Like I can
remember certain things that were pre-my ex significant other. Or when I
was with him. Or where we lived.

And then after I split up with him and what I was doing in the interim
between breaking up with him and marrying my current husband. And what I
have done and where I have lived since our marriage over the last 10 years.

Kind of like "where I was" and "who I was with" when this or that happened.

I wouldn't mind if someone who keeps track would tell when I first posted here.

For those of you who post regularly (as well as those who do not or

I found it in the latter part of 1995 and never unsubscribed except for
six months when we were living in temporary quarters at one time around 2000 so
it has been 12 1/2 years for me or so. During the last 12 1/2 years
I have told at least four people about this list because they had not heard of

Hello everybody,

This email got me thing about how you long
term Quads have seen things change over the years.  Hoe people treat Quads
to the equipment we use.

I know as a Quad for 17 years I have seen
a lot of changes.  Stuff like wheelchairs that climb stairs (Ibot), 4x4
wheelchair. Medicine to reduce swelling after an accident. ADA.  I have seen changed on how people
react to quads too.  when I first was hurt, people talked to people with
me asking what I want or needed, today it seems people talk to me just as a
regular guy sitting down.

If you could share your insights on
different things you seen change over the years that would be real interesting
to hear.
