Some asked about my accident and life soooHere is a summery of me:   May
30/31st at 1am 1981, I was driving a good friend on on a freshly graveled road.
I was driving a station wagon Pinto.  A very light car.  I hit loose gravel
lost control and rolled it into a very deep ditch.  Of course back then no one
wore seatbelts.  My friends fell out of the car and I was thrown through the
windshield.  How that happen is beyond everyone because there is very little
room between the steer wheel and roof, that is probably why when I went out my
forehead hit the rim where the windshield was attached.  It caused my neck to
bend backward breaking at an angel of C5,6,7 and scalping me in an L shape.
They doctors at the time thought the spinal cord was completely severed once I
was able to get an MRI years later they found there was a little still attached
which expand how I had full use of shoulders and biceps.  I was lucky my friend
was able to get up and go get help because I was laying in the middle of the
gravel road and no one would have seen me until it was too late so God was
watching over me that way.  I was blessed with no internal injuries and no
brain damage.  Luckily my scalp was able to be cleaned and folded back in
place.  Surprisingly my hair even grew back which they did not expect. The
ambulance driver and attendant were family friends, it was harder on them
seeing someone they knew.  But it was a small community so I am sure they knew
everyone they helped.  I was taken to a local hospital then Life flown to Iowa
Methodist Medical Center/hospital IN Des Moines IA where I spent three weeks in
ICU, 3 weeks in the hospital the went Younkers which was attached to IMMC. I
was there from the beginning of July until January 1st 1982.  I was able to
stay caught up with my senior class while I was in Yonkers.  When I got out I
joined my class of 34(that is including me.)  I graduated with them.Small town
people rally together and help.  Thanks to my classmates which I had gone to
school with since I was in Kindergarten, other friends from surrounding
communities, family and so many others.

Sorry, Jackie, I never got your orginal post. You went through quite an ordeal,
especially the part about not knowing if your son was alive. It sounds like he
has come along ways surely because he had the help and support of you and your
family. Family and friend support has got to be one of the greatest assets a
spinal cord injury survivor has. The hospital and medical staff deals with the
medical issues, but there is so much more that goes on in a person than what
medical science can address.

As tough as it has been for you, think of how far you and your family have
come. He has accomplished a great deal and graduating law school. How wonderful
is that?

Welcome to the group and I look forward to your posts.

Finally, my cell rang, and it was a nurse at the hospital. They found my number
on a record he had there from some visit to the ER years before. She was like
an angel on that phone...telling me he was alive! She put the doctor on the
phone and that's when he told me Bobby hadn't moved his legs since they found
him. That was devastating, but balanced against living or dead, not the worst,
as I was expecting. My older son reminds me often that when we were driving
down there I was begging God over and over to let him be alive, and that I
would take care of him. So now, I am. And I am still grateful. I moved into his
apartment for the two months he was in inpatient, then rehab, and ran my
business as best I could from there. My family came down right after the
accident, and again to celebrate Christmas
with us. The law school very graciously put them up and brought us Christmas
dinner. No one will ever forget that holiday. My husband was there on the
weekends and as much as he could during the week. My friends were feeding my
cats and arranging to get my house ready for Bobby to come home. I tried to get
him transferred to a spinal cord unit at home, but he had no health insurance
and I was in the process of getting him Medicaid qualified and they advised
that he stay there. Finally he was able to come home, and we took him to be
evaluated for outpatient treatment. They re-admitted him in a rehab close to
home. We are lucky because he was a weightlifter in remarkable shape when this
happened, so his upper body strength serves him well. He transfers and uses a
wheelchair with"power wheels". He has since gone back to law school locally,
served his externship in a local law office, and graduated from his original
law school. He's taking the MPRE in
November, and sits for the bar exam in February. He goes to a gym where they
use the methods from Project Walk, and he still works out with weights. And, oh
yeah, there's the girlfriend. She lives about two hours away and comes up every
other week and stays for a few days at a time. His goal is to pass the bar, get
a job and move out on his own with his girlfriend. I don't have to tell you
that this is the hardest, most gut wrenching, emotional train wreck of an
experience I could ever have Imagined. My beautiful perfect baby boy can't
move, and I can't do anything to help him but to hope that medical science
catches up with this soon enough to help him, and to try to make the best of a
miserable situation. I am incredibly proud of him, and love him like nothing
else, but some days it's hard to accept, and just hard to even get out of bed
because the grief is so bad. But we do it...we have to...he needs me to be
strong. Thank you for allowing

Re: [QUAD-L] Hi Everyone! And Kindle Question

2011-02-05 Thread Tod Santee
Hey Quadius -- Sorry to hear about your mom. I hope you're still doing well
as more time passes.

Thanks for the Kindle info. I think it was the e-Ink screen you were trying
to think of that wasn't backlit. I ended up deciding on the Nook (the
original, not Nook Color). I just couldn't hit the buttons on the Kindle
with my fingers like I do other keyboards because they are so
smoothly rounded and only slightly raised. My finger slid off just as I got
enough pressure to activate it.

The Nook has a small touch screen below the reading area with a touch
keyboard for book searching and buying and for web surfing (if needed). It
was available with Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + 3G. Wi-Fi was enough for me. The Nook
Color is a full screen touch sensitive model but didn't have many other
benefits I could see.

I use the Wi-Fi quite a bit because I typically make purchases using the
computer and they simply migrate directly to the Nook without me doing
anything. Plus, I can read on my computer screen and rearrange the
"shelves" (classics, Stephen King, Tech Stuff, etc.) on the computer and/or
Nook and whichever I use next is set up exactly like the other... and I'm
still up to date in both places on which page I left off reading. Basically
saying the two sycronize quite seamlessly without me doing anything to make
it happen.

The Nooks both have user-replaceable batteries whereas the Kindles need an
authorized dealer to do it. And you can easily add memory to the Nooks by
adding a microSD card in the back.

Mostly, though, it was the touch screen versus buttons that sold me on it.
*I love it!!!* I carry it on my lap everywhere I go and it's always "open"
to the correct page at the press of the ON switch!

Best regards!

  Hi Lori & Everyone else,

I must say that when we travel we really go out of our way to avoid "posh."
Neither of us likes going somewhere where many people live in very basic homes
but then finding all our places to be "all the comforts of home." If that's
what we liked we'd probably just stay in the US and get rooms in the Marriotts
and Hiltons. No, we prefer to be somewhat immersed in the true culture. We
eat at local markets and restaraunts intended for "locals." Example: At one
market in Bali we were served rice with chicken, veggies and spices packed in a
banana leaf by hand (bare hands!) We definitely took the roads less traveled
(especially in Thailand!).

At one time, early in our marriage, I thought I wouldn't be traveling like
this if I hadn't married Sherry but then realized I had it backwards... I doubt
Sherry and I would have been together if she didn't like traveling like this.

It's great that she can help and loves exotic places "on the cheap." But
then I think back to when I moved to AZ... it was just as much a challenging
adventure. I had things set up such that someone I never met would be doing my
PCA care (at least at first). I packed up in PA, had my parents drive me out
and unload. They stayed for 4 days and left on schedule even though the guy I
had arranged had been arrested and was in jail for some non-violent offense by
the time I got here. I never did meet him but I managed to scramble to find
somebody else.

I've always had that daring and adventurous spirit. That's how I talked
Sherry into taking Scuba classes and getting our certifications. We can scuba
anywhere in the world now! (And after her first time, she LOVES IT. She's
been looking for new places to vacation AND dive ever since we got home!) I
think it's that spirit that gave me the ability to survive after my accident
when I lived in such a "closed" community and wsas rarely able to go anywhere
due to cold and weather issues. (Thank God I had a computer and 2400 baud
modem!! Haha!)

Now, as for the Kindle -- It looks like they aren't a good option. That's
probably why I didn't get many responses. On the other hand, the Nook (from
Barnes & Noble) looks more promising with its touch screen rather than tiny
buttons. Plus it has a web browser. I'm going out to check them out today.

But then, if the Nook looks like a good option, I have to decide between WiFi
vs. WiFi+3G. And how much are Nook eBooks compared to Kindle's? I'm also
wondering how much the 3G will be of use. Can I use its WiFi when I'm out of
the country to browse the web and newspapers back home? Or do I need the 3G
for that. In fact, I have to find out if the 3G for a Nook even will connect
outside of the US (out of AT&T's main Nook market). And finally, I know the 3G
connection for Kindle has no monthly fee but I haven't heard the same --or had
it verified-- about Nook's 3G connectivity.

Oh so many things to consider. And I thought shopping for computers was
difficult!

Best to All. And a Merry Christmas to everyone I don't connect with before
then!

  Sincerely,
  -- Tod

typical tourist realms makes it seem a LOT less crazy an idea than I'd imagined.

As for the Kindle, I don't like it. Tried one and sent it back! Needs too
much hand/finger dexterity and I thought the screen lacked sufficient contrast.

But, coincidentally, I just came from Barnes&Noble, where I tried out the Nook
Color and LOVED it. The size is great, touch-screen responsive, screen is
hi-rez and browsing websites was a pleasure, they were so much more readable
than on my computer! That surprised me.

Its not at all as versatile as an iPad (no camera and no apps) ...but, it runs
Google's Android OS under the hood and I've rumors that B&N is planning to
create a Developers' program and App Store. In the mean-time, there is
http://nookdevs.com for the more adventurous willing to void their warranty to
unlock the device (and its potential).

I didn't buy one today, but I came close! I have other stuff on my plate right
now and didn't want the distraction. Also want to see if the price goes down
soon ...though at $249, it is already a bargain.

Hi Lucinda! I've never been yo Portland. I hear it's a nice place and very
community-friendly. I usually check out a city's transportation web site.
It seems the easier to find, more prominently displayed their access options
are the better the services. However, like all general statements, it can't
be taken to mean it works every time.

Best wishes!

Re: [QUAD-L] Hi Everyone! And Kindle Question

2010-12-22 Thread Tod Santee
Hi Lori & Everyone else,

I must say that when we travel we really go out of our way to avoid "posh."
Neither of us likes going somewhere where many people live in very basic
homes but then finding all our places to be "all the comforts of home." If
that's what we liked we'd probably just stay in the US and get rooms in the
Marriotts and Hiltons. No, we prefer to be somewhat immersed in the true
culture. We eat at local markets and restaraunts intended for "locals."
Example: At one market in Bali we were served rice with chicken, veggies and
spices packed in a banana leaf by hand (bare hands!) We definitely took the
roads less traveled (especially in Thailand!).

At one time, early in our marriage, I thought I wouldn't be traveling like
this if I hadn't married Sherry but then realized I had it backwards... I
doubt Sherry and I would have been together if she didn't like traveling
like this.

It's great that she can help and loves exotic places "on the cheap." But
then I think back to when I moved to AZ... it was just as much a challenging
adventure. I had things set up such that someone I never met would be doing
my PCA care (at least at first). I packed up in PA, had my parents drive me
out and unload. They stayed for 4 days and left on schedule even though the
guy I had arranged had been arrested and was in jail for some non-violent
offense by the time I got here. I never did meet him but I managed
to scramble to find somebody else.

I've always had that daring and adventurous spirit. That's how I talked
Sherry into taking Scuba classes and getting our certifications. We can
scuba anywhere in the world now! (And after her first time, she LOVES IT.
She's been looking for new places to vacation AND dive ever since we got
home!) I think it's that spirit that gave me the ability to survive after
my accident when I lived in such a "closed" community and wsas rarely able
to go anywhere due to cold and weather issues. (Thank God I had a computer
and 2400 baud modem!! Haha!)

*Now, as for the Kindle* -- It looks like they aren't a good option. That's
probably why I didn't get many responses. On the other hand, the *Nook* (*from
Barnes & Noble*) looks more promising with its touch screen rather than tiny
buttons. Plus it has a web browser. I'm going out to check them out today.

But then, if the Nook looks like a good option, I have to decide between
WiFi vs. WiFi+3G. And how much are Nook eBooks compared to Kindle's? I'm
also wondering how much the 3G will be of use. Can I use its WiFi when I'm
out of the country to browse the web and newspapers back home? Or do I need
the 3G for that. In fact, I have to find out if the 3G for a Nook even will
connect outside of the US (out of AT&T's main Nook market). And finally, I
know the 3G connection for Kindle has no monthly fee but I haven't heard the
same --or had it verified-- about Nook's 3G connectivity.

Oh so many things to consider. And I thought shopping for computers was
difficult!

Best to All. And a Merry Christmas to everyone I don't connect with before
then!

Sincerely,
-- Tod

Hi Everybody out in the Land of Q's!

Many of the old-timers here probably remember me.  I kept getting kicked out by
eskimo.com because my email was listed as a spammer (?? NO Idea why!) so I
decided to re-join a while back using Gmail.  So far-So good (fingers crossed).

My info... My name's Tod, age 43, C5-6, 27yrs post from falling from a tree.  I
moved to Tucson, AZ, after 6 unhealthy years in the cold PA climate.  AZ's
warm, dry weather helped a lot but as I get older it seems to be getting cooler
here (just getting spoiled, mostly).  LOVE to travel!  Been to Costa Rica 4-5
times, took public busses and ferrys to get from Seattle to the Olympic
Penninsula to Victoria and Vancouver and an accessible Amtrak back to Seattle
(interesting with no scheduled transports), and this summer I got my SCUBA
certification and used frequent flyer miles/points (mostly from strategic
credit card spending) to go to Thailand and Indonesia for my first ocean dives
while touring around Bali for 3 weeks!!  DAMN COOL!

I taught high school biology from '96 to 2010.  (Curently deciding whether to
continue or change course.)

Now I'm thinking abouta Kindle and decided to come out of lurking mode to get
the advice of those I consider Experts... You All.

I'm wondering how many of you use them.  Are they useful for anything besides
just "book reading" without the book?  Also, I notice they have Wifi or
Wifi/3G... is there a major benefit to the 3G if al you can do is load books
and/or newspapers?  Wouldn't you already have what you're reading loaded to
memory?  Or is there a web surfing capability I haven't heard about?

So... It's good to see so many friends still hanging around!  And I'm happy to
say Hi to the "new" folks in the past year/year-point-five I haven't yet met.

And Thanks A Bunch to anyone who might be able to offer Kindle insights or

Welcome Back Tod. I'm surprised that you didn't seek a temporary position
as a substitute teacher in your area on a day to day basis.
I'm not overly impressed with the Kindle as it wasn't designed for those
that lack functional movement. Is it a nice instrument ? Well Yes. I'm
sure that some can work it ok and others with have finger issues. Like cell
phones, computers are getting smaller and smaller. Now cell phones are
getting bigger because of text messaging and keyboards. I don't believe that
you can print off the Kindle yet.

RE: [QUAD-L] hi ...

2008-03-08 Thread RollinOn
Welcome aboard Tubagus,
I'm also paralyzed from chest down with no finger movement and down to one
arm.
I know it's going to be harder where you're at but don't cut yourself short
there's still things you can do as long as you got your mind.
I found a job in construction because it's what I know how to do but it
wasn't easy trying to convince people I could do it and I ran into people
after I was employed that questioned my abilities and I'm still here and
they're long gone.
Find something you like to do first and work from there.
It's a hard battle but if you are persistent then people start to pay
attention.

Good luck,

Mark Jackson

Hi Warrior,

Tubagus, lives in another country on the planet. They don't have VR Programs
like that, I'm sure.
Then consider that in some countries, poverty is common, even among those
who are not disabled.
I imagine that even in some populated areas of our country, housing and jobs
are not easy found.

Best Wishes and Hope you have all your boxes emptied.

2008-03-07 Thread Stacy Harim
Hi Tubagus,

I'm sure everyone on the list or most everyone felt as you did when they were
first injured. I know I did take a lot of time to re evalute my life. I was
devistated to find I was not going to be making a living the same way. It's
been almost 7 years for me. I had a lot of problems since then but still have
been working on getting a degree.

I luckily found something I was passionate about and want to finish my
education so I can help other disabled and/or elderly people by becomming a
social worker.

I was 27 when a type of encephalitis almost killed me by putting me in a coma
for a month. The doctors expected me to have brain damage if I survived . On
top of that they said it would take 6 months to a year before any signs of
recovery and most likely not be able to do anything for myself.

I have since hurt my back severly and had to get a lot of rods put in my spinal
column and will be getting another surgery soon where I will lose some function
because my back wont bend at all. It does very little now. Anyhow I know that
I am alive for some reason and feel very fortunate to be alive. It took time
but I am getting through it. It also helps to talk to someone.

There are options for you. Like I said, try to find something your passionate
about. You are young and will get through it. This list is great and I am
sure there are some that can tell you some pretty great stories of how they are
getting though it.

All the best to you,
Stacy

2007-08-06 Thread Danny Hearn
Hi Ron, yeah I get short tempered a lot tooespecially when pain lasts long
periods and don't seem to let up much. I still pretty much take the same meds
as you still---Elavil--Lorazapam at times and vicodin, also oxybutinin for
bladder spasm pains. My family Doc sent me to a bone specialist because of all
the left arm pain and heaviness and that doc said it is all from my
neck--probably pinched nerves and syrinx and the x-rays need to be seen by a
brain-spinal euro doc-so far I have not gone to the last Doc yet--I doubt
there is much they can do anyway. My pains are intense some days and other days
it seems to go into remission where it is at least tolerable.

Thanks for the prayers Dana! I have used a cushion called the ish dish. It
has the section where the ishial tuberosities (the bony prominence on each butt
cheek) would be that is cut out and those prominences are supposed to be
suspended. The rest of the cushion is fairly firm and if you're not exactly
positioned correctly on the cushion it can harm your sores.. my prayers go out

TABS and DABS, came out of the Independent Living Movement many, many years ago and was started from middle aged pilot who was refused service by United Airlines, so he crawl'd up the stairs into the plane and someone thought to take a picture of the incident.  Next day it was plastered all over the media and this guy became an overnite icon and much sought after speaker.  But those were the old days, lol

Even though your question was directed to Lori I thought I'd give you my

Hi   Ron,   good to hear from
you. I'm pretty much the same as you on meds. I take 10mg of amitriptyline (
elavil ) every night to help with pain and sleeping-- Doctor Wice said in the
future I can increase the dosage from 10mg to higher if I need to. Like You I
will take Lorazapam at times I feel it's needed. My family Doc also gives me
vicadin to help on day's that pain if severe. My brother was curious about quad
pains, I explained to him that we learn to live with much pain and that what we
deal with most every day would probably be a big shock to a healthy non
paralyzed person.

Re: [QUAD-L] Hi, new member, supra pubic, etc...

2005-07-27 Thread Stacy Harim

Hi Kaye,

Sorry for the late welcome.  I'm Stacy.  I just turned 31 on the
3rd and paraplegic at T 7/8 level from a rare type of encephalitis.  I just
had the same surgery in May but I may have to have it again since my appendix
looks like it either partly died or the incision closed where connected to the
bladder.  We'll see on the 12th as I go back and have an outpatient surgery
possibly done.  He's going to do an x-ray and if all goes well he's going
to use a camera going through my urethra and will open up the incision where the
appendix is connected to my bladder.  Unfortunately my appendix wasn't long
enough for my long torso to be able to cath through my belly button but they did
try.  I had to have a new stoma put in.  If the procedure doesn't go
the way I want I will do the surgery again next summer after the spring
semester.  It's important for me to get school over early.  I'm afraid
to have the surgery don’t in the winter break as my incision got infected this
time around and I was connected to the wound vac for almost a month.  If
that were to happen again, I wouldn’t be able to go back to school without that
wound vac attatched to me and that’s too embarrassing to handle.  When I
had the surgery I also had a chait catheter put in. It's a tube connected to my
large intestines to help with my bowel program.  I run 500cc's of saline
through the tube and it pushes my stools through. I do run an extra 250
through after the 500 just to make sure I'm empty.  It's over so much
quicker.  At least one good thing came from my not so great hospital stay
and surgery.

Anyhow, sorry for the long story.  It's great to have you with
us.  I look forward to reading your posts.  Enjoy your stay.

I hope I'm doing this right!I've been injured for 13 years,

mitrofanoff where the surgeon used my appendix to make a "tunnel" that goes
from my belly button to my bladder.  So I cath via my navel.  Less
chance for bacteria to be introduced, being that it's away from the vaginal
area and all.  I can do it anywhere so long as I have a catheter, empty
bottle and betadine swabs.  I have had my share of Utis and have
minimized reoccurance (and symptoms which are enough without having the actual
infection) by sticking to sterile catheters drinking lots of water and stuff
and staying away from caffeine and taking cranberry capsules. That's my

I tend to agree with Dave. I have a suprapubic this has occurred periodically over the last 10 years. I can usually trace it to some sort of trauma. If there are no other symptoms of a UTI, would not worry too much about it right now.

home from work in my Geo Tracker. I came to a corner and wasn't familiar
with
the road yet, I was going to fast, back end slid out and I rolled and was
ejected onto highway. I wasn't wearing a seat belt. When I hit the ground
my
head took the impact, I broke my neck and damaged my spinal cord. then I
spent
over three months in hospital, lost girlfriend as well as many other
friends
and aquaintances.

I came to quadlist when I got this syrinx, I needed to know how others
were
dealing with it.

Hi friends.  I am finally able to get back on the q-list after getting my computer problems fixed, and now having some time after the holidays.  I hope everyone is doing well.  I received some information about the Extreme Makover: Home Edition show that's on this Sunday.  I am going to forward it to the q-list.  I look forward to hearing from everyone again, and meeting new people who are here since I've been gone.  Take care.  Sharleen C5/6

I'm also fighting a wound. It looks like I'll be bed bound again as mines
starting to get worse again, from being up to go to school.

As well as seeing you post again Jerry!  Let
us fight these wounds in unison!

Hi Lori,

I hope you're wound is getting better.  I know how it is not being able to be on the PC much.  I'm getting mine to clear-up but it wants to break down when I do too much, on the PC or otherwise.  I am glad to see you're posting again.  :-)

Since battling my wound of 5 months I haven't been on the PC much and, when I am, little to no time to write. But hours on end to think.Pain ... Hi to Corie who, despite chronic pain, got her Maser's and works what she can!Same to Tod - working with pain. However he never answered my traveling questions but jumps in when politics come up! :-)To Dave who has been battlin a crease wound as well!To Sam who has been bedridden like myself for a wound. And to Julie - she knows me locally!A couple people have asked questions but my responses may be well delayed. My wound has closed so I'll be getting up short hours and increasing my time up if things stay ok.This was one stubborn wound and I wouldn't be this far without having used the wound vac and high protein drinks. My skin is healthy so I guess the place
of the wound had the most to do with its healing - the worsrt place to treat one ... in the crease deep under a buttock cheek.Lorihttp:\\www.michaelsons.org
