Joneswares material is thicker than Ibex, but the weave is more open, so the
net
result is comfort over a wide range of temperature. They are great to deal with

I'm looking into some 3/4 length wool tights (knickers?) and wondering what my
options are.

There is Kucharik which I know of, and Ibex (but has a weird panel over the
knee). Swobo used to be an option, but looks like they've gone pretty heavy
into the petroleum product content :(

I'd like a little bit lighter weight than Kucharik, at least based on the 15

Any suggestions?

[RBW] Re: Rust Never Sleeps

2010-10-24 Thread David T.
Yeah, it’s not really explosive, just the can it comes in. That was
just an attempt at humour. Otherwise sheep would be blowing up left
and right.

But it does seem like good stuff. It forms a coating on metal, and it
doesn’t flow off. The company makes a lot of claims for it, that is
their business of course. But it is nice to be able to work with
something that is not poisonous. I am going to put some on the outer
parts of my bike this winter too. Salt on the roads can corrode
aluminum too.

Last year I tried to use my Quickbeam sparingly in winter to preserve
it. But I have decided to not worry about it from now on. I will see
year by year how it stands up. I think the frame will still last a
long time, I have seen lots of old frames that have been around for 30
years or longer in this area and they are still fine.

[RBW] Re: Wool 3/4 tights

2010-10-24 Thread Garth
For 45-63ish degrees I just wear knee warmers by Defeet called
Kneekers. I wear them under my regular non padded loose fitting hiking
shorts. Wool ones are available too from Defeet and Ibex. Kneekers are
one size only, Ibex offers XS-L.

I know ... some people love knee warmers, some hate them. They can
fall down, the number one cause for dislike. I've solved that issue
though. I discovered that when the temps warm up in the 60's and I get
some perspiration under the warmers, they stay up just fine. This got
me thinking. I've always used Now brand Vegetable Glycerine(available
in Whole Foods/Co-op/Natural Food type places and online)
http://www.nowfoods.com/Products/PersonalCare/Products/M003277.htm?cat=Personal%20Care
as a grease free hand moisturizer. It takes a while to absorb, so your
hands feel a little wet far awhile, though not really. I put about a
quarter sized drop in my hands and apply to my thighs and knees. Put
on the warmers. Like magic, the knee warmers do not move. I've tested
these on rides down to 50 so far, in very low humidity, and they stay
put.

Being long legged, I find knee warmers perfect because I've never seen
knickers that I'd want to wear and are long enough. A few sizes do not
fit all! For temps in the upper 40's to lower 60's though, all I need
is something to keep my knees warm.

Knee high socks of course! I have some Thorlo's. Sometimes I even

[RBW] Bombadil Ancestry

2010-10-24 Thread Marty
While I wait for my new Bombadil, I put together a recent find that
will be it's urban companion: a 1983 Stumpjumper. This will be my pick-
up truck around town once I add the Wald basket to the front end. This
is as close to a grab-and-go bike as I've had in quite some time.
Simple, practical, utilitarian. Comfortable enough. Kind of like the
'38 Chevy pick-up I had way back. The Bombadil will be set up with
more gears for longer rides, and I may go with drops - we'll see once
it gets here. I decided to go with a solid silver paint job - just
like the Stumpy. No frills. The first shot in the set shows the bike
in it's natural habitat - it begged me to stop and play when I rode
past...

Just to provide the caveat - gasoline is highly combustible. It is

Kerosene would be better in this application. It does not combust

Re: [RBW] Re: Derailleur Cabling

I too experience the occasional problem with the rear derailer cable
dropping out of the BB cable guide on my Riv custom and Saluki.
I've encountered this when removing the rear wheel - usually in the

the cable is almost guaranteed to fall out of the guide. ;)

I use the inner liner from brake cable housing on the derailer cables

[RBW] Re: Derailleur Cabling

2010-10-24 Thread Travis
Hm, I think drain holes are sometimes worth plugging - on a case by
case basis. If you aren't using fenders and that drainage hole is the
only reasonable access point for crud and water, it can't hurt to fill
it. If you do have full fenders and a mud flap, that drainage hole
will only let things out. I have one bike which is otherwise well
sealed, but fender-less, and the BB drainage hole was allowing road
crud spit off the front wheel into my BB. I sealed the hole with bees
wax and the BB has remained clean ever since.

Also, most drainage holes on frames and racks are actually
ventilation holes drilled by the framebuilder to release gases during
brazing or welding. Many builders don't bother to fill them with brass
afterward. They aren't necessarily helping you out any when the frame
is complete. Ventilation holes in forks and seat stays are worth
filling with bees wax, in my opinion. Bottom bracket drainage holes,
on the other hand, are placed with drainage in mind - but like I said
above, they may or may not be useful.

Gotta say that my absolute favorite piece of gear were my woolywarm knee

winter, and they were just the right thickness to keep on underneath tights
when things got really cold (yeahh. I know. SF Bay Area cold).

I have not been able to find another pair of wool _knee_ warmers since they

Realize it doesn't directly help you, but if folks at RBW were looking for a

Re: [RBW] Re: SKS Secrets

2010-10-24 Thread Ray Shine
I happened to be at RBW yesterday and saw a Sam in the showroom that had a
beautiful set of prototype SKS fenders. They were much longer than regular
fenders, and had integrated plastic/rubber mud guards. On top of that, they
were painted. They looked really good. I wish I had snapped a pict of them
with my phone, but didn't think to do that. I hope they are available soon.
I'll be right in line to get a set, painted or no.

I just came across the new 'Special Edition SKS Bluemel fenders here
in Chicago (Village Cycle in Old Town) , and I must say they are the
nicest I've seen. Very sturdy, matte black finish, rigid profile,
nicely integrated flaps, and wide enough for some serious rubber.
$50.00 These are going on my new Bombadil for sure. (I'll be running
40mm Schwalbe Marathon XRs) I have a set of Planet bike fenders on my
Stumpjumper, and the SKS seem far better.

[RBW] Ride and camp near Annapolis

2010-10-24 Thread JB
I'm planning on being in Annapolis, MD the second week in November
shopping for a sailboat. I'd like to ride my A. Homer and camp if
possible while there (car camp). I've not been able to find anywhere
near town to camp. What I'm looking for is a campground within 10
miles of the harbor so I can ride my bike during the search.

Anybody know of a place. And, in general, is Annapolis a good spot to
bike -- any suggestions.

Gotta say that my absolute favorite piece of gear were my woolywarm knee

I have not been able to find another pair of wool _knee_ warmers since they
finally wore out and failed. (Pulled 'em up higher when on a brevet and

Realize it doesn't directly help you, but if folks at RBW were looking for
a simple item to add back, that'd be my vote.

2010-10-24 Thread rperks
You pull up your socks and tuck them into the bottom of the knickers
if you are really looking for style. And if you want bonus points,
buy a pair of the same socks in a smaller size, cut out the toes and
you have coordinating arm wamers. The heel section fits well inthe
elbow, as if they werre made for the purpose.

This level of fashion statement will not only earn you bonus points

Uniglide 7 speed was not very precise, and SunTour and Campagnol

instances of chains breaking, perhaps in part because Hyperglide let you
shift under load, so people did - and sometimes chains broke.

I don't recall anyone ever being unwilling to risk 6 speed, although
whatever they called the 6 that took up the same space as 5 didn't shift
very well.  And I never saw a 4 speed freewheel.  Not once.

[RBW] FS: Rivendell custom 54

2010-10-24 Thread csb
I've decided I don't use this bike enough, and need to cull the herd
(not enough room in the basement..) Besides, a bike like this should
be ridden with gusto, not wasting away in the dark.
The bike is a Match-built burnt orange road standard with white
headtube and fills, I can't remember the year! The BB ID is R72M,
with 54 on the right side of the bb shell. It has a Cyclotourist
triple, 50, 40, 26. Phil Wood hubs with a screw on 7-speed
freewheel, FIR touring rims, roly poly tires. Suntour Alpha-3000
deraiiluers, Kelly take-offs on the bars with indexed shifters. Nitto
technomatic stem, nitto Dynamic 65 seatpost, Nitto stainless
waterbottle cages. Nitto deep drop bar. Campy brake levers with
hidden cables. Suntour Cyclone calipers. Of course, a honey Brooks
B-72 saddle.

I bought this in 2001? from a fellow who had it built up by
Rivendell, and because of health reasons had never used it. I think I
have about 500 miles on it, always stored indoors, no rain, no
brevets. The only marks I can find on it are two tiny rub marks on the
head tube from cables, and a tiny pin-sized chip on the left chain-
stay.
Included are assorted parts from the original owner including 2 NOS
spare freewheels.

I thought I would list it here first, looking for $1900 plus actual
packing and shipping from a good local shop (Boston area). Local
pickup OK. If no go here I plan an ebay auction beginning at $2000.
As an All-Rounder frame sold on Ebay recently for $1400 including
brakes, I think this is a fair price. If you think not, let me know
why.
Nothing to say to this group about the bike, it is a great mellow
ride, I my hope is someone here can enjoy it as much as I have.

PS- found an old email- the frame was built in late 1999. The wheels
were built by Joe Young.

[RBW] Re: :) The end is near!

2010-10-24 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
We had an early 70s French something in a couple months ago with a 4sp
freewheel. Gearing limitations were the least of its problems...

It's not accurate to describe Silver shifters as friction. They are
more of a ratchet mechanism than a friction mechanism. Unlike true
friction, which, for all its drawbacks, has more or less infinite
range of shift positions, the ratchet shifters shift to a finite
number of ratchet clicks - it's not really possible for the shifter to
be at rest between two ratchet clicks. Usually works fine with 5, 6,
7, and 8-speed freewheels and cassettes, since the cogs are far enough
apart that the shifter being a fraction off doesn't initiate a shift.
With 9sp and 10sp, the ratchet clicks start to almost mimic indexing,
and there are usually a couple cogs that are hard to use (or at least
noisy). Some people have told me that they use 9sp with Silver
shifters with no problems. I believe that these people are: a) lucky,
b) simply not hearing the rattling noises, or more likely, not
actually using all nine cogs (to reduce noise, always trim-shifting
away from the cogs that don't happen to align with the ratchet).

My personal opinion: Component manufacturers add more gears, often
while quietly making more important innovations, because how many
gears? is a question frequently asked by people who buy bikes. I have
had many bikes with 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and (recently) 10-speed
drivetrains. They are all fine. I am not a huge fan of Silver shifters
(or any friction shifters), and I don't have much interest in trolling
ebay for vintage parts to keep my rig on the road. If 10sp is what is
going to be widely available for the foreseeable future, I probably
won't be going out of my way to build a bike around a 6-sp freewheel
or 6-sp Uniglide cassette or any other obsolete drivetrain. 10-sp
works fine, and is now available with a dizzying array of gearing
options, a variety of shifter styles, etc. That said, unless they
request otherwise, anybody who buys a bike from me will most likely be
getting 8sp or 9sp, simply because it saves them a few bucks on chains
and cassettes. I don't foresee replacement chains and cassettes
becoming any more limited in selection than they already are, at least
not for quite a few years. Hoarding at this point is probably
premature. Not that you should let that stop you :)

[RBW] Hello New to Group and just Purchased a Bike

2010-10-24 Thread Kelly
I just purchased a 67 CM AHH from The Country Bike Store in Ohio.
They had many bikes to test ride and let me take one out for a spin.
The owers spent hours just talking and riding with me and my wife to
make sure the fit and all the details were set.

The amount of detail they put into the builds is amazing.

Anyway it was the most comfortable bike I've ever ridden. I don't fee
bad about selling my 17lb carbon fibre race bike at all. Now I'm in
line to order a double top tube Hunqapillar to replace my tour bike.
well once my wife gets over this purchase lol ...

Great information on the group.. I look forward to reading more.

An AHH has to be the perfect one to jump into the deep end with!

Enjoy!

I bought my Bleriot frame from them. They are honestly some of the
nicest guys I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with.

Re: [RBW] FS: Rivendell custom 54

2010-10-24 Thread carnerda...@bellsouth.net
Can't help you with a sale, but read your description with interest as I
own a match-built Rivendell Road, serial # R73M. Enjoyed a ride on it
this afternoon.

Re: [RBW] Bombadil Ancestry

2010-10-24 Thread Stonehog
Nice stumper, Marty. I was also inspired by the Bomba and Grant's piece on old
mtb's in the last reader. I picked up an '88 Miyata RidgeRunner Team and riv'd
it out for an alternate commuter. It's a real cushy ride with BigApples. I'll
post pics when I take some.

Simple, practical, utilitarian. Comfortable enough. Kind of like the
'38 Chevy pick-up I had way back. The Bombadil will be set up with
more gears for longer rides, and I may go with drops - we'll see once
it gets here. I decided to go with a solid silver paint job - just
like the Stumpy. No frills. The first shot in the set shows the bike
in it's natural habitat - it begged me to stop and play when I rode
 past...

[RBW] Re: Bombadil Ancestry

2010-10-24 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I have an old Stumpjumper, too, 1983 or 84. It has been my go-to bike
on a daily basis for several years. I mostly rode it fixed-gear in a
touring bike configuration, if that makes any sense, and I now have it
for sale (somewhat reluctantly). To make a Riv connection, I believe
these were made by Toyo.

Anyway, I recommend NOT putting a front basket on it. The head angle
is so slack that whenever you come to a stop and let go of the bar,
the weight of the basket and/or its contents will cause the wheel to
flop and the bike will fall. Also, parking becomes an issue unless the
front end is absolutely secured so it can't flop. It handles the front
load ok at speed, but is unwieldy when stopped.

Also, an earlier stage with 650B wheels, basket, and Albatross bar:

I found it was not at its best with 650B wheels.

[RBW] Bar-end Cable Routing?

2010-10-24 Thread Kevin Turinsky
I'm considering rerouting my derailleur cables from my bar-end
shifters, under the tape, all the way up the bars, just like my brake
cables. The reason I'm thinking of doing this is because then the
cables and my Berthoud bag will no longer have to quarrel.

Anyone already done this? Any tips? Any hobgoblins to look out for?
Photos?

Thanks.
