I have the SA on almost all of my bikes now, i like it so much.  A couple of 
notes that have worked for me:

-  I dont tension often at all in the beginning.  As others have suggested, 
that just lessens the life span. After it sags and forms to me, i'll tighten to 
feel (not to a measurement) and then don't have to tighten often from there.

-for the same longevity reason, i don't treat the leather.  I DO keep a bag or 
cover handy in case of rain though, and try not to ride at all if it's wet and 
i dont have fenders to protect the underside.

- i lightly sand the sharp edges of the cutout.  This eliminates pinching that 
sometimes happens if it's not tensioned enough - especially since i seldom use 
padded shorts now.

- in the early days when Tom Milton was alive, he used to include very a 
detailed guide for setting up the saddle and keeping track of subtle 
adjustments as you would dial in the perfect position.  I could probably find 
and scan and post one of those if you're interested.

Part of the problem is the first edition Clems used those weird ratchety 
shifters that weren't really friction, weren't really Power Ratchets. Mostly 
they just sucked. Also, in my 56-years-old case, I just can't hear bad shifting 
like I used to. Friction is more work than when I was a youngster banging giant 
stem levers on Schwinn Varsitys. Gimme them clicks, man!

I got a 59cm clem frame as soon as it was released and have had a similar 
love/frustration experience as yours ever since.  One one hand, it's the bike 
that seems most appropriate most of the time and is what i most want to ride. 
But there have been a few nagging setup issues.  After changing the build 
multiple times, the one i still haven't resolved to satisfaction is that of the 
handlebars.  However, I'll say that every time i try something OTHER than the 
boscos (including and especially the billie), i realize how much I actually 
like the bosco, and end up putting it back on.  

I have the aluminum 58cm version on a 130mm negative rise technomic stem 
because i wanted to get them as low as possible.   I'm actually able to take 
advantage of all that real estate because my stem allows me to angle the ends 
significantly downward.  But they're still not quite far enough away even then, 
and my one big, deal-killer complaint is with their flexiness.  Standing or 
sprinting or trying to throw the bike around on rough terrain is truly 
frustrating and sometimes even scarry to me.  If the flex doesn't bother you, 
the billie might be worth trying, but I'll tell you right now that it's just as 
flexy AND even narrower.

My plan is to try the steel bull moose version next, even though it would raise 
the bars more than i want.  If it eliminates the flex, I'll adapt to the height 
and be content.  If not, I'll break down and do what others here have 
suggested:  go for the sure-fired solution of putting a jones loop or, maybe, a 
surly open bar on it.  The only reason i've fought against going that route is 
because so many others of my bikes - including my Jones itself - already have 
them.

My partner and I did this for a while with a 60cm Cheviot. She's 5' 6" and 
I'm 6' 4". It worked but it wasn't really ideal, too much compromise in fit 
and even though it only took a few minutes to adjust the bars and saddle I 
just got tired of having to futz with the bike all the time. If you do 
decide to do it swept back bars like ablas are essential imo otherwise the 
reach disparity will probably be an issue. It was amazing that we could 
share a bike though given the difference in our height. One other thing was 
even though she technically fit in terms of saddle height and being able to 
reach the bars the bike always seemed too big for her, it was hard for her 
to handle such a long bike and get it in and out of our apartment. If your 
wife only rides once a month or so it might be fine. 

I think Adam's advice is good. My partner loves her medium MB-1. It has 
swept back riser bars, a front rack with basket, and easy gears. It fits 
her great and most importantly it's HERS. She has gotten into working on it 
some and adding her own touches. She is stoked and so am I.

Not that familiar with the Clem, but I was able to fit fine on my wife's 
Betty Foy, I have a PBH of 91 hers is much less closer to 74 as I recall. 
The bike was sized by Kevin for her dimensions only. I just use a 410mm 
seat post and my own B17 to ride it.

IME Friction works great withSilver Shifters, Microshift R10/Deore/SunXCD rear 
derailers with  7-speed cassette and 4.5mm spacer or 8 speed cassette, both on 
Shimano type 8/9/10 freehub body.

I should have mentioned that, friction shifting seemed perfectly fine back
in the day with my childhood 10 and 12 speeds in the 70s and 80s, but now
it seems out of sync.  I don't know if it's the additional 2 gears in the
back or I'm just spoiled by years of indexed shifting.

Thanks. I have some Obenaufs.
Nose is 1/8” up.
Felt good today. Letting it stretch more before tightening again. Too hard 
under sit bones when tighten to the recommended 6mm. So I’m letting it stretch 
and enjoying the lower tension.
I have found that the saddle is so comfortable, besides the sit bone pressure 
when properly tensioned, that I barely change hand and body  positions compared 
to my Brooks saddles. I find myself unmoving and keeping the same position for 
long periods.

I also swapped out the Bosco bar for a Jones 2.5 riser loop and much prefer the 
angle and width of the Jones.  My 65cm Clem H came stock with 55cm cromo Bosco 
and Tallux stem.  I think I’d have been happier with the 58cm Boscomoose, but 
traded for a Jones before purchasing a new Boscomoose and now I’m not inclined 
too after settling in with the Jones.

I have 3 on bikes and love them. I use Obenaufs to moisturize without making 
too soft. And in small amounts. Comfy from day 1.  I like a slight hammock in 
mine and generally level heel/nose set up. My oldest has 7,000 miles (I weigh 
around 150 and Riv only sold the heavy duty model so that's what I use). You 
can also get a longer bolt to get more life from them.  Don't over tension.  
Check yoru position. Your nose may need to come up to give you a flatter sit 
bone landing area.

I would think Choco or Albatross bars would work great on a Clem. Perhaps 
the combination of how high and far back the Boscos come could be why 
you're feeling they aren't wide enough? I would think a bar that got a 
little closer to the stem would feel better.

I had a Clem with the stock build, and like you, I found the Boscos weren't
for me. Lots of real estate, none of it valuable. I much prefer my Jones
Loop on my Clem. You'll have to get a 31.8mm stem, though. It's worth the
minimal hassle.

I wasn't big on the soft index/friction shifting, either. I have indexed
Sram grip shifter 9 speed on my bar now. That's a nice combination with the
Jones bar.

Have you considered a Jones H-Bar or the upcoming RBW Wavie bar?  I 
recently bought the Jones 2.5 (inches of rise) loop bar and I'm very 
impressed with it.  It offers many hand positions and it makes the steering 
much more confidence inspiring.  Judging from the recent RBW catalog, the 
Wavie bar looks to have a similar sweep angle and it's pretty wide at

I'm currently riding Billies on my Clem. I've run them on two, actually, I 
recently just swapped down to a 45cm Clem after admitting to myself the 
52cm was too big, and I've tried the Billies on both. I like them best 
flipped upside down, but my wrists are still pretty fussy after a couple 
years of being just a little too stretched out too often, so, I'm riding 
them the upright way for the moment. They feel notably narrower to me than 
the Boscos did (I had the 58cm also). More aggressive, in both 
positions.Maybe it's just because as you creep up the Billies they really 
do get narrower fast, while the Boscos run more or less straight through 
the bends. The by-the-stem flats of the Boscos were a little better for 
dipping out of the wind, but the on-the-bends hooks of the Billie are less 
stress on my wrists and I can stay in them longer. The Billies come back a 
little farther for the same stem length, so, if you're already banging 
knees they won't help much with that. You could chop'em, but part of the 
appeal is they have enough length for two full hands before the bends, so, 
you can have one position behind the brake lever and one in front. I do 
like that about them a lot. For me the Billie has the more comfortable 
flare angle of the two.

If you want the lowest seat possible, use a straight seatpost with a 
standard separate seatpost clamp. Rotate the rail clamps 180 degrees from 
where most people have them so that they are below the clamp through bolt 
instead of above it. You can put the seat about an inch lower with this 
method - the seat rails are almost touching the top of the seat tube.

Good point, Sean, that is indeed a B17..I don't use any other saddles so I 
forgot about the height they carry. I just matched up a beater Cambium I have 
and you're right about the difference, this just might work! You might as well 
snag a 52 L and try it, the worst that can happen is you'll still need to buy 
her another bike.

I don't see why this doesn't have a good chance of working. I'm 5' 10" and a52 
was fine. I can't do pics at lunch but I am pretty sure there was room to drop 
the saddle enough for a 5' 2" rider. The bike was designed around Boscos so I 
don't see reach being a problem if you go with those.

[RBW] soon FS: Clem 65 H and Litespeed Blue Ridge Titanium Touring 21" (posting for friend)

Hi folks,

I'm going to be posting my 65 Clem-H as soon as I can get a few minutes to 
prep it and take some pics.  It's pretty much a stock build...for a Joe 
Appaloosa.  (Yes, a Joe.  Here's how this came to be: I bought a new 
complete build Joe Appa, found it too small for me, so transferred the bits 
from Joe to the 65-Clem frame, put on Bosco Bars and sold the Joe frame. 
 So now you know)  Ridden about 75 miles, so about equivalent to a 
demo. More details to come.  
I'm thinking $1100 for the Clem.

Now, as for the the LiteSpeed: a long time neighbor, cycling buddy, and 
wonderful human-being of 85 years old is asking for my help in selling his 
titanium LiteSpeed Blue Ridge.  He figures it to be a 2004 model and has 
measured it to be a 21 inch frame.  Aluminum fork, Matrix Aurora rims, 105 
and Deore parts, 3 x 9 bar end shifters, and lots of room for cushy tires. 
 He's thinking ~$1900 but is open to offers.  (I think it's a steal at that 
price and wish the frame was a 27").  Located in Ohio.

flat pedals and easy gearing and a basket, buy the 59 clem (that fits you 
best), and call it a day. even though the clem L is cheaper than your 
custom rando, it's still a nice, expensive bike that there's no reason to 
sacrifice anything on. this way you won't have to deal with any annoying 
swaps or spend too much on something if your s/o doesn't end up using it as 
much as you anticipated. i am roughly your size and just got a 59 clem L 
and it's pretty amazing.

Joe, that's a really helpful pic, thanks! I see why you have reservations 
about the 52 working for my wife. In the end, I totally get the advice, and 
appreciate it. Any incarnation of a 52 Clem for my wife would be pushing 
it, and I know the mantra, the best bike is the one that fits. 

With that out of the way, and because this is fun to dream about, even if 
not realistic, is that a standard B17 on there? The B17 is ~2.5cm taller 
than the Cambium I'd put on the Clem, so that buys a bit for the amount of 
seatpost we could play with. It'd be tight, there's no denying it...

Yeah, there's something off about Cam's numbers. My PBH is close to his wife's 
and this is what my 52 H looked like, saddle at 69-70cm. These pics also show 
why I think the bike is too tall for *your* wife, especially if you get a 
complete with the stock 173mm cranks.

Cam, I'm kinda shocked that you have to slam the seatpost on the Clem for 
your wife with an 81cm PBH when Riv states that folks with PBH starting at 
74 can ride the Clem, that's a 7cm difference. Do you have a super tall 
sprung saddle on?? The seat tube is 52cm C-T, right?

For a data point, my wife was able to ride my Schwinn High Sierra without 
any complaints. It measures at 20" (~50.8cm) C-T seattube TT is 56.5cm, and 
at the time was outfitted with a 120mm Deluxe steam and Albatross bars. So, 
my thinking was, add 1 cm to the seat tube, I'll check and see how her 
saddle height was on the High Sierra, but, it has the monstrously tall 
original Viscount foam saddle. A lower profile saddle would effectively 
gain her a cm or two. Honestly, I'm more worried about reach than saddle 
height. She seemed fine with the Albas, but the 52 Clem has a TT almost 5cm 
longer. I'm guessing this could negated with a 100mm stem and some Choco 
bars.

I don't know, if Grant can ride a 60cm Cheviot, which the Riv chart would 
have him barely squeezing on, and call it his smoothest riding, nearly 
favorite bike, I wonder why the same couldn't happen with my wife and the 
52 Clem L? Something to chew on I guess...

edgerunner, and it’s awesome), and she rides my bike because she prefers it to 
her own. works well, honestly, we just move the seat up and down a lot. 
however, my wife is 5’6” with a PBH of 81 and we basically have the seatpost 
slammed for her. so, my concern would be that even shoved all the way down to 
the rails of the seatpost the 52 clem might still be too tall for your wife.

On both my SA saddles break in time was nil. Perfect out of the box. I 
would not recommend conditioning the leather too much as they are known for 
stretching rather fast. Tighten/loosen the bolt as needed, I usually just 
have about a finger tip width between under the saddle and the seatpost top 
(while under load)

I have to say, this is an experiment I'd like to see happen. Not sure why 
everyone is nay-saying it. The Riv geometry charts have both of your PBH within 
that range, and I always think Grant is conservative in making those. 

If you can get to a 52 Clem, why not test it out?

And everyone saying such and such height difference will never work, hogwash. 
Bike share bikes are designed to fit people from 4'10" to 6'5". Clearly bikes 
can be designed to fit a wide range of sizes and it looks like Rivendell did 
that with the Clem L.

this bike from the Rivendell Reader #41, which introduced the Sam, with the 
60cm being for PBH 87-94.  Mine is that original green color, but with a 
pewter colored head badge rather than gold, so I think it's from the early 
years but I don't know exactly which.  Serial number starts with M9 in case 
that means anything.  I'm putting Albatross bars on it, so I've got that 
angle covered :-)

I can't speak to the saddle bag issue but be aware the design of the Sam 
seems to have changed over the years.  I think the earlier versions 
possibly had a bias for swept back handlebars as well as maybe some other 
changes (versus the current Sam).  I could be wrong on that though.

Comparing the geometry charts is always interesting to me, just to see how 
bikes evolve:

I'm still waiting on some parts I've bought, but man, this bike is huge!  
It feels similar in size to the 25" mid-80's Cannondale touring bike I used 
to have, which I loved but always felt a little big.  (My PBH is 89.5, so 
this is sized right according to Rivendell.)

What I didn't anticipate is that the lower bottom bracket brings the seat 
-- and therefore my saddle bag -- just close enough to the rear tire that I 
think I should probably get a rear rack for it.  Mark's Rack and the Nitto 
R10 look like good options, but may need to wait until I can find a used 
one for sale.  Does anyone have any other recommendations?

Alas, seems like this wouldn't work out. Riv technically starts at the 52 
at a PBH of 74, so I thought with my wife only being 5mm off, perhaps she 
could squeeze it. I did think about cockpit swap where I would use ergons 
and thumb shifters so I could switch over without recabling, so you and I 
were on the same page there, Ed!

I'd have to sell my Nobilette rando to afford two Rivs, so I think I'll 
just keep looking for an old ATB to convert for my foul weather commuter, 
and continue to fix up the '94 RBT for my wife.
