Not to derail too hard, but on the topic of Suntour Superbe brakes, I
happen to be selling a 1st gen Suntour Superbe group (brakes, levers, DT
shifters, FD, RD) and a campagnolo crankset in case anybody needs the parts
to build up this frameset. $300+ship if anyone is interested.

[RBW] Re: Nitto Technomic Stem

2024-06-25 Thread Erik Wright
Hi Joel,

Soma has a couple options. You could look at the 225mm rise Dirt Drop stem
<https://www.somafabshop.com/shop/nitto-stem-quill-mt-10-dirt-drop-225mm-slv-5647?category=983#attr=288,1136>

for some more height, or the mega-tall 280mm rise Nitto Technomic (25.4
version for your Chocos/Albas
<https://www.somafabshop.com/shop/nitto-stem-technomic-quill-280mm-xl-25-4mm-4096?page=2=983#attr=4036>)

for even more.

Getting a mixte would be pretty cool, but so would keeping your Saluki!

[RBW] Re: Drops vs albatross. Easy to swap or do I need two bikes?

2024-05-01 Thread Erik Wright

Answering on the practical side (easily swapping handlebars) rather than
the “should I own two bikes” side of things, Russ from Path Less Pedaled
did a video a while back on optimizing 1 bike for easy cockpit swaps.
Basically using a little Jagwire cable splitting doodad so the cables and
housing can mostly stay in place when swapping bars. It makes more sense if
your bike has full-length housing, but there may still be some nuggets in
there that are helpful.

https://youtu.be/qj0qOyw_Es8?si=wKDJKxwHhdtKdBg0

Could be a good in-between option while you’re building up your second bike
;)

[RBW] Re: Soliciting opinions: help me pick the right Rivendell

2024-04-07 Thread Erik
Evening,

Based on the parameters and details you provided, I think that a Hillborne
or Appaloosa would work well. Or an Atlantis instead of the Appaloosa. I
have all three, all set up very differently, but each has gone through a
lot of iterations. The key for me would be what type of trails you are
wanting to ride, your size, and trail riding style. The Hillborne is a
great bike, fun on the road and pretty nimble on the trail. The Hillborne
has a smaller tire width max and lighter tubes. The Appaloosa or the
Atlantis are longer and have stouter tubes. They also take up to a 2.2
tire. I've run both as primarily trail bikes and they handled pretty much
anything I wanted to ride except for the most extreme trails in my local
parks. They work really well as trail bikes. I've run them with 1x 11 (50
large cog) set ups, 3 x 9 with 11-34 cassettes, and now as 2x. I live in
northern California and do a lot of climbing. The gearing has always been
fantastic. My Appaloosa was my primary commuting bike for about five
years.

Here's my Instagram if you want to get a look at some of the set ups that
I've used over the years. It's mostly
bikes: https://www.instagram.com/lith.o.carp.us/

Hope that helps!

Erik

[RBW] FS: Waterford Built Atlantis (58cm) Frameset & Various Parts

2024-03-14 Thread Erik from Saint Paul
Had this frame listed last summer, buyer backed out due to unforeseen life
expenses, so I packed it away. It's now back up for sale just in time for
anyone with a tax refund burning a hole in their pocket to build up their
dream bike.

Rivendell Atlantis built by Waterford in 2018.
Size: 58cm
Color: British racing green
Headset: Chris King (included)
Seatpost: Kalloy Uno - 26.8mm (included)
Wheel size: 700c - 135mm rear spacing
Frame is in really good shape overall, but there are a few cosmetic
blemishes like minor scratches, some paint peeling around fender and rack
bosses, and a slight paint bulge where the front derailleur was mounted. No
dents, rust or any structural issues. Brake cable hangers are pictured, but
not included.

$1,600 for local sale (Minneapolis/St Paul).
Willing to ship via Bikeflights for an additional cost to buyer.

I also have a wheelset I can include in the sale for an extra $100.
Velocity Dyad rims laced to Shimano LX hubs with Surly Knard tires. (Not
looking to sell/ship unless it's with the frame).

Other parts for sale:
* Nitto Technomic stem (26.0mm clamp, 120mm long): $20
* Velo Orange 46/30 crankset (170mm): $100
* Tektro Oryx cantilever brakes: $20
Shipping costs are additional and determined on your location.

Re: [RBW] WTB: Tosco-moose Bars, Threadless for the Gus

2023-08-31 Thread Erik
Some updates: no Tosco-Moose bars have appeared yet and Riv headquarters
wished me good luck in finding them when I called to ask if one was
floating around the shop.

In the meantime, my V-5 arrived from Blue Lug (3 days from order to
delivery in California!) and I've popped a Losco into them and installed it
on the Gus. That V-5 is possibly the most beautiful stem I've ever
installed on the bike. I already had Blue Lug spacers and it looks like it
was all made for the bike. Greased the bolts and cranked it to 8 nm
(probably too tight for those bolts!) and unfortunately, the bars do slip a
little on hard landings which is a no-go for how I ride that bike.
Otherwise, I love the fit and feel. I'm going to put a little anti-slip
compound on this evening, but I'm not hopeful. I've had this problem with
all of my sweptback bars over the years but was hoping that a two-point of
attachment stem would work better. I'm too big and ride the bikes on beefy
trails. I'm the target audience for a moose-style set up!

The better news is that I found a frame builder locally who also makes
handlebars I'll share the results and contact info if it works out! It
won't be cheap, but he already fabricates fillet brazed bullmoose bars, so
we will see.

In the meantime, I'm still open to buying your tosco-moose bars!

Re: [RBW] WTB: Tosco-moose Bars, Threadless for the Gus

2023-08-29 Thread Erik
I've looked at just using a beefier stem (I currently run a Paul Boxcar on
the Gus) and a regular Tosco with a 31.8 clamp diameter, but part of this
search is to complete my "moose" collection: I have a bullmoose, a
boscomoose, and chocomoose on different bikes. I love the look and the
beefiness of the moose configuration! I ordered a Nitto V-5 this weekend
from Blue Lug. I have a Tosco and a Losco that I'm going to try out with
that stem on the Gus, but I'm really hoping to find the moose variation.
I've also considered seeing if I can get a handlebar maker to fabricate
something similar for me.

I appreciate the tips so far!

[RBW] WTB: Tosco-moose Bars, Threadless for the Gus

2023-08-28 Thread Erik
I know this is a long shot, but I would love to land a Tosco-moose
threadless handlebar. I think they were sold briefly around the time of
the first run of the Gus Boots Wilsen. I'm looking to swap out my current
Gus cockpit for a swept-back option, but I want the moose configuration's
sturdiness.

Let me know if you have one burning a hole in your bike parts stash.

[RBW] FS: 58cm MUSA Atlantis f/f/hs, 55cm Crust Lightning Bolt f/f/hs, and various parts

2023-06-13 Thread Erik from Saint Paul
Not very active on this forum, but figured this would be the best place to
list first.
Looking to sell my 58cm Waterford built Atlantis. I bought it in 2018 from
Rivendell for $2400. It was originally built for someone else, but the
water bottle bosses on the seat tube were a bit off kilter, so it was sold
for a slight discount. Never had any issues with mounting a bottle cage and
nothing ever got in the way. Frame is in really good shape overall, but
there are a few cosmetic issues like minor scratches, some paint peeling
around fender and rack bosses, and a slight paint bulge where the front
derailleur was mounted. It's been a great bike, but I just don't ride it as
often as other bikes I have, so I think it's best to let it go. Located in
the Minneapolis/St Paul area and will meet up within the metro area if
interested.
Color: British racing green
Wheel size: 700c
Headset: Chris King
Seatpost: 26.8mm, Kalloy Uno (included with sale)
Brake cable hangers: Nitto front and rear (included with sale)

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1oxlevH9kCvQy_amBUuEsh6Vjo8qQ3VIV?usp=share_link

Asking $1800 + actual shipping cost.
Also have a set of Velocity Dyad rims laced to Shimano LX hubs that I'll
throw in for an extra $150 if you're interested.

55cm Crust Lightning Bolt Frameset with Campagnolo Record Headset. Frame is
in very good condition with a minor scratch and scuff here and there. Fits
650b x 42mm tires under fenders just fine.
Asking $750 + actual shipping cost.

Other parts for sale:

Nitto mustache bars $20

Tektro drop bar brake levers (short pull): $15

Velo Orange quill stem 31.8 clamp, 90mm: $20

Velo Orange quill stem 31.8 clamp, 80mm (new): $30

Velo Orange treadless stem 31.8 clam, 110mm: $20

Velo Orange treadless stem 31.8 clam, 80mm: $20

Handsome Cycles quill stem 25.4 clamp, 80mm: $10

Sram Rival left double shifter: $25

Sram Rival front and rear derailleurs: $50

Dia Compe ratcheting downtube shifter: $30

Tektro Oryx cantilever brakes front and rear: $30

Shipping not included in list price of parts.

[RBW] Re: Brooks B17 repair

2023-04-28 Thread Erik Wright
Simon is the guy. I believe that's where Riv sends their saddles for
repair, or at least they've shouted him out a couple times in the
Blug/Blahg. One of his 2 shops is my LBS- it's in the same building that I
have a pottery studio. One time I wheeled my bike into his shop for some
reason and he noticed I was missing a rivet in my Selle Anatomica (how the
heck did it just pop out??) and he hammered one in right then.

Rick painted two bikes (frame and fork) for me last year. It was about a
two-and-a-half month turnaround time from the day I dropped it off. I also
told him that I wasn't in any hurry. And they are beautiful, of course!

It took me a minute, but if my training in linear perspective is correct:
the steel cables closest to the camera and angling "up" to the left are the
railing on the edge of the deck itself; the handrail and cables in the
intermediate distance are stairs going down to the yard; the background is
ice-covered grass. Or so I think after studying the image. It would be
great photograph to show my drawing students to explain linear perspective

[RBW] Re: Blatant shoutout for Road Runner Bags

2022-12-02 Thread Erik Wright
I've been buying from Road Runner since 2015. I have a medium rolltop
backpack, a couple tool rolls, a Jumbo Jammer for bikepacking, a Lil' Guy
fanny pack, and maybe one more. Whenever I use my rolltop backpack (~3-4
days a week) I think "damn, this thing is going to last my entire life." I
love the Jumbo Jammer. I use my Lil Guy almost daily for 6 years now. The
company's run by great people and I wholeheartedly recommend their bags.

Re: [RBW] Re: Susie / Gus questions

2022-10-20 Thread Erik
1x11 works perfectly. I had to get a fairly wide BB spindle to keep the
chain off of the tire in the smallest gear, but it works beautifully. I
think I ended up running a 122.5 BB.The longer chain stays actually
help mellow out the chain angle on the highest and lowest gears. I’ve done
this on my Atlantis in the past as well and have had no problems.

Re: [RBW] Re: Susie / Gus questions

2022-10-20 Thread Erik
Not only do I have a quick release, I picked up an old Hite-Rite to go with
it! I salvaged the quick release from an old Bridgestone that’s been in my
shed for a long time. It’s certainly an option, but I did have problems
with the post slipping. Given that I’m not out charging around, stopping
to set the seat height isn’t that onerous a task. I have occasionally
stopped and dropped the saddle with a hex key for longer descents. Maybe
I’m just overthinking the dropper post thing and need to embrace the quick
release!

Re: [RBW] Re: Susie / Gus questions

2022-10-19 Thread Erik
I’ve been running my Gus as my primary mountain bike for about six months
now and it does everything I want it to do and goes anywhere I want to go.
Some background: mountain biking has been my primary form of biking since
my teen years in the late 80s. I started on rigid bikes, moved to front
suspension by the mid-nineties, but didn’t make the jump to full squish for
another ten years. I recently sold off my last full suspension bike (Salsa
Horsethief) and used the proceeds to finance the Gus. I turned 50 this
year and have realized that at this point in life that I don’t ride hard
enough to warrant the big suspension beasts. I like to meander more than
charge these days and am happy to leave the in-air antics to the fitter
and/or younger.

On the Gus: I can ride it on any trail I rode on my FS bikes. No problem.
It’s a bit slower downhill, but even better on climbs. I run a large
knobby 2.6 up front and a 2.5 in the back, tubeless. The squish of the big
tires makes all the difference and prevents too much bone and teeth
rattling. I love the stability. Love the handling, though it does have a
bit of front wheel flop that took some getting used to. It climbs like a
beast and I love the comments from the hardcore riders out on the trails.
I regularly ride it on the nasty, rocky, rutted trails at Upper Bidwell
Park in Chico, CA, often intermingling with the full-squish set on climbs
but politely letting them go first on downhills. The Paul Motolites work
perfectly and I don’t miss discs at all. I have figured out how to set up
these brakes to get the perfect stopping power and modulation and have
never had any problems with controlling my bike.

The ONLY thing I wish were different: I want a 27.2 seatpost clamp so I can
run a dropper. I’m with Jason on this one. I would like the option to
move the seat down for more technical descents where I need to lower my
mass toward the back wheel so I don’t go over the front. Without a
dropper, there are some really steep, technical descents on my regular
rides that I walk as I can’t quite get the positioning I want.

Will posted some photos of my bike a while
back: https://www.rivbike.com/blogs/news/eriks-large-gus

It’s possible I’ll pick up another mountain bike at some point, perhaps one
with just front suspension, but that’s more about my problem with buying
bikes then it is about needing it for riding my local trails. :-)

a medium flat rate box, so let's say $65 shipped.

[RBW] Re: How Many Bars on the Appaloosa?

2022-08-08 Thread Erik
I thought the reach wasn’t too bad when I ran drops, but I had them set up
on a 50mm and then 30mm stem and had them up pretty high. You can see the
drops with yellow tape in my first post. I changed them out because I got
into an accident the broke my hand and wanted a new set up with different
hand positions and wanted the feeling of my hand being protected. The
Jones H-loop was perfect for that purpose as I could hold the close side of
the loop and my hand was behind the outer loop reducing the chance I was
going to smack my hand on something. Or have another rider run into me
again and break it. The drops would not have worked for my desired riding
position with a longer stem.

[RBW] Re: New 650b Rims from Crust

2022-07-19 Thread Erik Wright
I'm looking at getting a set of these wheels in 700c for my Sam Hillborne,
but they're 130mm spacing without the ability to add spacers and re-dish
the wheel. The Hillborne's spacing is 135mm.

I've put 130mm wheels in the Hillborne before and just tightened down the
QR, but only for a short period of time. Any downsides to this as a long
term solution with this wheelset? I use friction shifting, so I don't have
to worry much about slight derailleur alignment issues.

[RBW] Grilver Close-up Photos Request

2022-07-13 Thread Erik
Afternoon Folks,

I'm preparing a Riv for new paint job and am interested in trying to get
the something similar to the "grilver" that was used on the old Clems and
Roadini's until recently. I realize that the "grilver" term was also used
for an older color that was less metallic and more greenish in addition to
the more recent "grilver" used on the Roadinis, Frank Jones, etc that is a
dark metallic gray.

Does anyone have photos posted online showing a close up of their grilver
Clem or Roadini? Or would be willing to take and post some high quality
close up shots? I have some photos, but nothing hi-res enough to get an
idea of the metallic sheen or grain size for the flakes. I want to be able
to explain it accurately to the painter to get as close a match as
possible. I know the color is a bit less grainy than standard flaked metal
colors. I remember it being a gorgeous crystalline graphite color and sheen
when I saw a Roadini in person, but would love a good reference photo.

Or if you've had a paint job done with this color and know the closest
Dupont color code, that would be swell as well.

Thanks!

Erik

the 30mm discord with the same bars on my Susie. Again, this was the perfect

[RBW] Re: Gus Boots Willsen: First Impressions

2022-05-26 Thread Erik
Hey Chris,

Those are just the regular, alloy Persuaders. I think it might be the
photos. They definitely don't have any forward sweep. I do keep them
closer to level so they may look like they have more rise, but otherwise
just the regular bars.

On the seatpost: I don't have good digital calipers to measure,
unfortunately. And I'm not sure if it was the post or the tube. With a
working bolt in the binder, it just rotated, the only reason it was
lowering into the tube was that I had cranked down with too much torque on
the bolt when I was trying to get it stop rotating. I was on the side of
the trail and got a bit over-enthusiastic! The post is used...I had it on
my Susie and on my Atlantis before that. I've had this issue a couple of
times over the years and always chalked it up to being a bigger rider. But
the knurling of the post fixed it. I did try a 27.2 seat post just to see
if the seat tube was the wrong diameter but it wasn't even close to
fitting. So if the seat tube is too large, it's only by a tiny, tiny
amount.

[RBW] Re: Erik's new Gus. Questions.

2022-05-24 Thread Erik
Well, that sand looks brutal! As you noted, the max listed tire size on
the Gus or Susie is 2.8, but I feel like that would be pushing it for a
couple of reasons. I'm running 29" x 2.5 Terravail Ehlines. They measure
about 62mm without any weight on them on Cliffhanger rims, tubeless. They
have plenty of clearance on the sides (about 12mm on the front, a little
less in the rear). I measured the distance between the inside of the
chainstays and it looks like it's right about 80mm (I wasn't measuring with
calipers!), so I don't think you could fit 3" tires (about 76mm) with any
meaningful room to spare. The forks have a little more clearance so maybe
a slightly larger front tire would be possible.

The bigger issue that I would see with trying to get even larger tires on
the back is the bottom bracket width necessary to keep the chain off of the
tire. It would push the chainline out pretty far. It's a 73mm shell and
I'm running a 122 IRD bottom bracket with spacers. Even with that and a
chainline that is wy outboard, the chain runs pretty close to the tire
in the 50t gear in the back. I think that if I sized up even to the 2.8 I
might have to switch up to a 127 BB, pushing the chainline out even
further. You almost need Boost spacing at that point to push the cassette
further out in line with the front chainring. Otherwise the front
chainring is starting to line up with the smallest cog which makes for a
terrible chainline. That's my amateur opinion at any rate! I'm sure
someone on here has tried it or knows this better than I do.

Otherwise, even with "just" 2.5 inch tires it's handled the terrain just
fine and was easy to keep on track on multiple surfaces, including rocky
sections and sections with lots of roots and loose gravel. It was equally
fine with all of it. Sand, however, is another matter. We don't have much
of that on the trails in my area so I can't really speak to it.

I may try out a larger front tire soon and will happily report back. I
don't think I'm going to try a larger rear tire for the reasons above re:
chainline.

And thanks for the nod on the build! Happy with all the shiny bits.

Knurling the seat post at the collar and about three inches down the
insertion into the seat tube. Worked like a charm. I've had this done on
a bike before when I was having a problem with slipping.

2022-05-23 Thread Erik
Thank you! My boy and I stopped by the shop today in Walnut Creek with the
Gus in tow. Will helped me troubleshoot a slipping seat post and he took
it for a spin around the building. We discussed the build and he asked to
take photos. That was a huge compliment! I love how friendly and nice all
of the staff are any time I stop by. It makes me so happy to support their
company.

And the bikes aren't too bad, either. I'll post up a ride report in a bit
from my foray into the hills this evening.

[RBW] Re: Hillibikes are so close!

2022-05-05 Thread Erik
I do plan to do some touring with mine. That's the primary reason I sold
my Susie and purchased the Gus. I'm near the recommended weight borderline
on the Susie and wanted to be able to add as much weight as I wanted. I
have a full complement of bags and racks. The plan is to run the
Tumbleweed T-rack to support some large saddlebags (Zeitgeist and/or a
large Sackville) and to hold some RandiJo Big M.U.T. bags on the Manything
racks I just ordered. I love that the Tumbleweed rack has the three bolt
attachments for the cargo cages. I also have a GREAT frame bag that was
custom made to fit a large Susie frame and will live on the Gus. I have a
front rack, too, but think I can get everything I need for a couple of
nights in the woods with just the rear rack bags, frame bag, and a smallish
handlebar bag. I don't like too much weight on the front on the trail.

Hoping we get an update soon. I'll be done with my spring semester
teaching in three weeks and have a couple of weeks off in late May / early
June before summer school starts. I'd love to spend all of it riding the
new bike!

[RBW] Re: Hillibikes are so close!

2022-04-29 Thread Erik
I had a complete build for my new Gus from a Susie that I sold in December.
The plan had been to simply buy a new stem but leave everything else as
is: WI/Cliffhanger wheel set from Rich, WI 1x cranks, Tumbleweed Persuader
bars, Paul Motolite brakes and levers, etc. But because I've had so much
time to think about it, I've ended up with three bar options, a new
Garbaruk 11-50 cassette and pulley kit, new shifters, a LOT of headset
spacers, stem caps, bar tape color options, grips, etc. It's going to be a
beautiful build and I can't wait to get started.

I'm sure there will be a lot of pictures once it's all set up. Hoping that
the ship made it on schedule!

[RBW] Re: Which swept back bars for a Hillborne?

2022-02-14 Thread Erik Wright
IMO it's hard to beat the look and feel of the Albatross. I've set up my
Sam with something like 6-7 different bars at this point; started with the
Albatross and finally came back around to that setup a few months back. It
seems like most newer bars that Riv makes come back extra far to complement
the longer reach of their newer models. Since the Albatross predates those
bikes I think they strike a nice balance when coming from drops. I think
something like +2cm on a stem will keep the fit/feel from popping you too
upright if you're used to Noodles. I have an 11cm stem and have considered
a 12, but since it's pretty fine as-is I haven't bothered with the swap.

Shifter choice might also play into your decision. I have Microshift
thumbies flipped inboard which sorta takes away the "in between" hand
position because it clogs up the bars a bit. This is less of an issue on a
bar like Chocos because they have additional sweep. If you run bar ends,
you get that extra 2ish cm of sweep from the bar end pods and also get to
keep the "in between" position. I've been thinking about moving to stem
shifters or moving the thumbies up next to the stem in the forward-most
hand position.

[RBW] Re: "Riding-a-bicycle Zen"

2022-02-13 Thread Erik
The best equivalent to that would be the book that introduced a lot of
people to Soto Zen, "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind" a collection of talks by
Shunryu Suzuki-roshi, the founder of the San Francisco Zen Center. The
book is a transcription of lectures and talks he gave at the Zen Center
over the years and starts with the line, "In the beginner's mind there are
many possibilities, but in the expert's mind there are few."

A few others I would recommend for their direct style and plain talk:
- "What is Zen" by Norman Fischer and Susan Moon. Just published a few
years ago, but a great introduction. And Norman Fischer is a fantastic
writer and teacher.
-"No Beginning, No End" by my teacher, Kwong-roshi. He was part of the
original group of students at SF Zen Center. The book is a great reflection
of his personality. I can see him rolling his eyes at me for writing these
lengthy responses about Zen. He frequently chides me for living too much
in my head. :)

If you want to hear / watch a talk, I always like to recommend this one
because it was written for a lay audience and connects the principles of
Zen with ordinary life. It's Zoketsu Norman Fischer giving the graduation
speech at Stanford in 2014.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hN9p__BHHDs

And now that I'm completely off the topic of bikes, I'll stop before my
posts get pulled!

[RBW] Re: "Riding-a-bicycle Zen"

2022-02-12 Thread Erik
An interesting thread. I've been involved with Zen practice for a long
time. I'm fortunate to live the greater Bay Area, one of the places where
Soto Zen first took root in America back in the 1950s and 60s as the Beat
generation started attending services at local Japanese temples in pursuit
of new experiences. Between San Francisco Zen Center and all of the other
temples and practices centers that branched off over the years around here,
we have a lot of teachers and places to practice. I've been a student at
Sonoma Mountain Zen Center for many years now and have spent a lot of time
sitting on a cushion and staring at the wall inside the zendo.

A fundamental concept in Zen practice is that there is no distinction
between sitting (zazen) and other activities. Zazen is just one way to
bring your attention to the present moment. A big part of the practice is
that you approach and engage with every activity with the same energy as
you do your sitting practice and that whatever you are doing should be done
fully and completely. When you sit, you sit. When you walk, you walk.
When you rake, you rake, When you ride a bike, you ride a bike. Even
during intensive training periods, we intersperse zazen with walking
meditation, work practice, cooking, cleaning, meals, and other tasks.
Sitting practice is only one part of a larger whole and the constant is
the act of paying attention to whatever is in front of you at that moment.

But without going down a practice discussion rabbit hole, I would say that
riding a bike--particularly when I'm alone--requires attention that is akin
to zazen. It's one of the things that I have always loved about riding.
Zazen can be brutal. It's just you and the cushion and the wall and your
attention. Nothing to distract you, even though your brain desperately
wants something to feed it. And so the focus on breathing, dropping
thoughts, posture. The need for this sort of focus comes up a lot when I'm
riding.

Just today I was out riding and was climbing up a decent grade near my
house and had to keep reminding myself that the only thing I need to focus
on is the motion of my body and bike in each moment, THAT pedal stroke,
THAT revolution of the wheels, etc. My lungs were straining and I wanted
to stop, but once I got into the rhythm of just paying attention to one
moment at a time, my body settled down and I was able to keep climbing one
pedal stroke at a time. It's not much different from the experience of
sitting through what feels like the 100th hour of zazen on a hot afternoon
when your legs and back are aching, your arms feel like they are going to
drop off, your thoughts are popping off and you are convinced that the
timekeeper died or forgot to ring the bell...just returning your focus to
the present breath, over and over again and all of the discomfort, anxiety
and thinking will eventually go quiet and you can settle down into
something deeper. Nothing lasts, everything changes. It's a lot like
riding in that way.

I'll end my long response now, but thanks for the opportunity to consider
the connection between practice and biking again.

[RBW] Re: XL Susie Handlebar dilemma

2022-01-07 Thread Erik
I ran a 30mm Discord W(Right) stem from Analog on my Susie with the
non-loop Jones H-bar. It was a great combo. If you like those bars, the
Discord stem should give you what you are after. I was riding a large
Susie, but had the same issue of longer legs, shorter reach and needed a
stem and bar combo that came back but not too aggressively. The sweep on
the Jones bar is really comfortable for trails and technical riding. I
ended up swapping it out for a Persuader bar, but the Jones / Discord combo
was really good.

That is a classy build, Eric. What is the combo of bar tape color and
shellac you used to get that result?

Love the black bits on this build. I saw the all-black component Platypus

Wow! I was on IG about five minutes after I posted this and saw the post
from Analog. What a gorgeous build, Leah! I've been looking at golds,
burnt orange, and brown, but hadn't thought about green with that color. I
actually have lime green deity pedals on the orange Susie right now and
lots of little green bling from my orange bikes. I'll keep them on hand
after seeing this! Thank you for posting this and congratulations on a
beautiful bike.

[RBW] Mermaid Builds

2021-12-19 Thread Erik
In anticipation of the new mermaid Gus I picked up in the presale this
week, I'm thinking through my existing components and wondering if I
should lean toward a black or silver build. I had my orange Susie set up
with pretty much all silver everything with yellow and lime green bolts and
accents, but am wondering how that will look on the mermaid color. I've
been browsing photos on IG, but I'd love to see how folks on the list have
set up their mermaid Appaloosas and Platypuses, what bar tape colors you've
tried, component colors, etc.

[RBW] Re: Why did you buy your first Riv?

2021-12-18 Thread Erik
I rode Bridgestones back in the day, starting with my first new mountain
bike, an MB-4. My local shop was a Bridgestone dealer so I saw all of
models come through over the years. I eventually purchased an RB-2 as well
and pined away over the XO-1. I loved the Bridgestone catalogs and
Grant's writing / philosophy on bikes and bike riding. I broke the frame
on the MB-4 eventually and got a warrantied replacement at the tail end of
Bridgestone in North America. This was a while after they were available
retail. They replaced my MB-4 with an MB-2 frame and I rode that bike and
my RB for many, many years as my primary around-town and road bikes. By
that time I was into suspension on my mountain bikes and went down that
rabbit hole for another decade or so.

I found this group in 2010 or so when I was getting disillusioned with my
big mountain bikes and the suspension arms race and was looking for a new
direction with my riding. During this time my primary riding was commuting
to work and exploring the back roads where I live, all things better done
on a bike other than full suspension all mountain machines. I finally made
the leap in 2017 when I found myself on good financial footing and bought
an Appaloosa. An Atlantis followed that. Then a Hillborne. Then I traded
the Hillborne for a Susie. Now a Gus on the way. I sold my last modern
bike last year and used the funds to buy wheels and fancy bling for the
Appaloosa. Getting into Rivendells has totally changed how I think about my
bikes, bike riding, and how they fit into my life. I'm so glad to that I
just get to go casually exploring and wandering now instead of dressing up
and for a RIDE. Bikes are a bigger part of my life than ever because they
are just something that fit into everything I do now, from getting
groceries to commuting to wandering the many trails in my local woods.

[RBW] Re: FS - Susie W Longbolts - 56(Large) - Orange

2021-12-18 Thread Erik
I was really tempted to make you an offer, but wasn't positive I would land
a Gus! Let me know if you want to cancel your order and take this lovely
orange bike instead. :)

To answer a couple of questions that have come through:

   - I have an 87.5 PBH. My saddle height is 75-76cm. My legs are long
for my height, so I've been running this with a 30mm extension Discord stem
and a Tumbleweed Persuader bar. I initially set it up with a 50mm stem and
a Jones bar with more backsweep (shown in the photos). The reach was great
in both configurations. I tried a Bosco but prefer less angle for off-road
riding and tried my nitto bullmoose, but didn't like the forward extension.

   - I do have other components available, but no brakes or cranksets at
this time. I have a variety of 9-speed cassettes, some good derailleurs,
and SunRace thumbshifters. Happy to send along details.

I'm going to be posting this on Craiglist later today, but wanted to give
the list members the first shot at it! Let me know if you are interested.

[RBW] FS - Susie W Longbolts - 56(Large) - Orange

2021-12-17 Thread Erik

I’m putting my glorious Susie up for sale. I have loved riding this bike,
but as someone at the top end of the suggested Susie weight range, I have
decided to move up to a Gus so that I can add racks and load the thing up
for more adventuring with a little more peace of mind. I was able to
secure a large Gus (in mermaid!) in the presale this week, so I’m going to
pass this incredible bike along to a new owner. The bike is in great
shape. I am the second owner, but it was lovingly maintained by me and the
previous owner. It has been ridden and had racks installed, so it has a
couple of nicks and rubbed spots in the paint from bags (shown in the
photos), but no crashes, no dents, no problems.

Photos here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/HZpww77TLQqSb1md8

I’m offering three options on this sale:

   - *Option 1*: Frame / Fork / Headset / Bottom Bracket for $1650
   - *Option 2*: All of the above plus all of the following for $2100

-Cliffhanger / Shimano LX Wheelset (32h/700c), used and in
great shape - $350
-Vittoria __ 29x2.1 tires, new, but have been mounted -
$50
-Riv seatpost - $0
-Discord W(Right) Stem, 50mm 31.8 clamp - $125
   -Jones H-Bar Bend, lightly used - $50

   - *Option 3*: F/F/H/BB plus any of the components listed above at $1650
plus the price listed next to each component.

I’m in the SF Bay Area and would prefer a local-ish sale but am willing to
discuss shipping. Shipping is an additional cost to the prices listed
above. The parts are not currently for sale separately, but I’m happy to
sell those after I’ve completed the bike transaction, so let me know if you
are interested.

Feel free to message me directly with inquiries!

[RBW] Re: hanging bikes on the wall

2021-12-09 Thread Erik Wright
Hey Minh,

The first two things that jumped to mind are a pulley system like this
<https://www.homedepot.com/p/Robtec-Black-1-Bike-Heavy-Duty-Hoist-Garage-Bike-Rack-CBH45/206479084?source=shoppingads=en-US>
 (looks
a little too storage-y for indoor hanging imo) or a product like Da Hanger
<https://dahanger.co/collections/pedal-hooks/products/dahanger-dan>. The
latter is my preferred indoor storage method- it has a tidy look, and
pulling the wheels to the wall keeps the bike from protruding out too far.

[RBW] Re: what size Gus or Susie for tall riders?

2021-12-03 Thread Erik
I ride a large (56) Susie and it fits perfectly. I'm 5'10" with an 87.5
PBH and 75-76 saddle height. My PBH:reach ratio is a little off, so I run
a 30mm reach stem with my preferred trail riding bars to keep me a little
more upright. I've ridden the 53 and it was definitely too small. I
didn't even ride the 59 as it was clearly too big. I imagine the 59 would

[RBW] Re: Anyone run 650b on a Sam Hillborne?

2021-11-24 Thread Erik Wright
I used the Tektro RL520 <https://www.tektro.com/products.php?p=71> when I
had drop bars on there. I have no complaints about the braking or lever
feel or anything like that. I was always curious about the Dia-Compe 287
because it seems to be the list's consensus on best v-brake drop bar lever,
but never took the plunge.

ODI grips! Oh, man...that takes me wy back to my early BMX bikes. I
can feel them just looking at your photo.

And yes, those are the 710 Jones bars. I've not tried the narrower
version, but love these bars on the Appaloosa in its current configuration.
I was dubious about the width initially, but have come to appreciate the
longer grip area. And I really like the Discord w(Right) stems. I have a
50mm on the Appaloosa and a 30mm on the Susie, both in the clear coat
finish. It looks particularly good with the clear coat Persuader bar.
 Lots of raw steel!

Re: [RBW] Re: Need inspiration: Show me your wrapped handlebars, please?

2021-10-24 Thread Erik
These aren't complicated wrapping patterns at all, but I like to mess
around with new color combinations and wraps on a regular basis. A good
source of interesting color combinations are plaid patterns. You can find
a lot of interesting color combinations / harmonies / contrasts in those
patterns.

These are the current iterations on my Rivs. First photo is my orange
Appaloosa - light gray, yellow, lime green with a custom mix of amber and
clear shellac, also Campandgoslow western diamondback tape on Jones H-loop.
Second photo is my Susie / Wolbis: light gray and yellow with clear shellac
on Persuader bars. Third is my Atlantis: chocolate, yellow, burnt orange,
dark gray with mostly clear shellac on Albatross bars.

I'm also starting to mess around with colored shellac. I discovered that I
can use shellac-based drawing inks to successfully color clear shellac into
whatever color or hue my heart desires. It opens up a lot of interesting
possibilities. I should probably be putting this time and effort into my
actual artwork!

Re: [RBW] Re: Appaloosa drive train guidance

2021-10-13 Thread Erik
These are the SunRace one-at-a-time shifters, so not really indexing. The
GX derailer was originally paired with Shimano bar-ends and a Jtek pull
modifier when I had the bike set up with drops. I purchased it all from
Analog with advice from James. When I moved to the Jones H-Loop, I swapped
the SunRace shifters into the system without the pull modifier to see if it
would work. Surprisingly it did so I rode with those for the past nine
months or so. I would never have tried the GX with a nine speed shifter
had it not been for Analog.

Re: [RBW] Re: Appaloosa drive train guidance

2021-10-12 Thread Erik
Hi Kushan. I did something similar to the drivetrain on my Appaloosa last
year. I have a 42 / 24 double up front and wanted an ultra-low bailout
gear in the back for loaded off-road riding / touring. I'm not a small man
and when I get the bike loaded with gear, it's nice to have something
really, really low for short stretches to give me a little recovery time on
long climbs. I looked at 10spd cassettes but ended up going with a SunRace
11 - 40t 9spd cassette to minimize the number of components I had to
change. It worked really well.

My full set-up was: SunRace 9spd thumb shifters (the type Riv used on a lot
of builds), 11-40 SunRace 9spd cassette, and a SRAM GX 10spd derailer. I
used that derailer as it worked with an 11-40 without any extender but was
compatible with the 9spd shifters. Interestingly, this set-up shifted
through the full 11-40 without any sort of pull modification. I also used
this set-up with Shimano bar-end shifters, but that required a JTek cable
pull modifier. I currently have this set up with Microshift thumb shifters
in friction mode and a cable pull modifier. I suspect that the 9spd Deore
and Silver shifters would work just fine with a GoatLink or similar
extender.

At any rate, the 24 x 40 combo has provided a usable low, low gear. I
rarely use it, but it's nice when needed, which has always been on extended
climbs with lots of weight on the bike. I use it for short periods before
shifting back into gears that actually feel like they are giving me forward
progress! 24 x 40 almost feels like sitting still! The lowest gear-inch
on a 24 x 40 is 15.8 inches. A 24x40 is 16.6. Pretty close. By contrast
a 24x36 is 18.6. (These calcs are with a 700c wheel at 42mm). Again, I
rarely use the lowest gear, but it's nice to have on occasion. It's not
THAT much different from an 11-36 in practice, but it is lower on paper and
in my head. :)

And the SunRace 11-40 9spd is currently available from a lot of different
retailers.

later to replace it. If I can find a 55, I’d be happy to sell the 53 to
you. I rode Grant’s 55 at headquarters this morning and am certain I want
the larger size. You’ve seen my photos of the 53 on IG. I realize this
doesn’t solve the immediate ask, but thought I’d put it out there. Feel
free to reach out here or on Instagram.

[RBW] Re: Wall Hanging Bike with Albatross Bars

2021-08-20 Thread Erik Wright
Living in a 100 year old row home, learning how to store/mount all my bikes
when I first moved in was a JOURNEY. I explored most wall-mounting options,
having 4 bikes all mounted differently as display / storage on the first
floor of my house.

At the Philly Bike Expo '17 I saw DaHanger
<https://dahanger.co/products/dahanger-dan>, which mounts just like the
Gootus that Michael shared. I picked one up and it's by far my favorite of
all the wall-mounting options. It feels tidier than other options and keeps
the wheels tucked against the wall so the bike encroaches on the living
space much less. It works great with Albatross bars, my 50cm Cowchippers,
and other wide bars. I haven't tried vertical stacking like they say you
can do, but I'm considering it.

I recommend it!

[RBW] FS: Lots of Goodies, Including Brakes, Bars, Brooks Saddle and a Wheelset

2021-08-19 Thread Erik
I am finishing up a new-to-me bike build and have decided to divest my shop
of a bunch of equipment. I've acquired a lot of things that need a good
forever home. Prices are w/o shipping. PayPal or cash (for in-person
sales) preferred.

On the wheelset: this gorgeous set was built by Rich at Rivendell / Hands
on Wheels for me in February. I had it on my Hillborne which I recently
traded for a Susie. I hate to let them go, but I'm sure someone else can
actually use them. I would prefer not to ship them, but can if needed. I
always worry about wheels getting damaged in shipment.

I'm local to the SF Bay Area. I live in the north bay, but am happy to
meet up for exchanges of goods within reasonable driving distances in the
Bay Area or Sacramento area.

The Paul Touring Cantilevers are a two-wheel set. I only took a photo of
one pair.

Good point! Based on my experience, my size / weight, and my riding
environment, the Appaloosa would be the winner if I had to choose between
the two. It has a wider range of uses for me.

[RBW] Re: Do you stand and pull with upright bars?

2021-06-24 Thread Erik Wright
Hey Zack,

I ride with Albatross bars on my Hillborne. I also do a lot of city riding
in Philly where just about every intersection has a stop sign. I stand &
pull all the time from just about every hand position on the bar. In my
opinion, it's fine. The one thing I'd say is to make sure you either use a
25.4 stem or get a shim for a 26.0 stem- the bars WILL scooch around with
aggressive pulling.

Re: [RBW] Advice for after a Fall?

2021-06-08 Thread Erik
Hey Ben. I'm really sorry to hear about the accident! I went through this
back in January after another cyclist rammed into me head-on. I was riding
my Appaloosa. I crashed really hard. The initial impact with the other
cyclist damaged my brake lever and bars. The subsequent crash into the
ground and skidding along the road damaged my rear derailer and derailer
hangar. It likewise damaged my shifter and other brake lever. My saddle
was scuffed up as well. The front basket ended up taking the brunt of the
impact, but the front rack (a big ol' Nitto) was a bit bent as well. The
housing on my Edulux light was scraped up but still worked. In the end, I
think the basket / rack took the brunt of the impact on the fall and likely
protected the bike from worse damage.

I posted about it here asking a similar questions. I took everyone's
advice and brought my bike into a local shop with mechanics I trust to get
the whole thing inspected. I do all of my own wrenching, but I felt it
was important for my future safety to get the whole thing thoroughly
inspected. They looked at everything in great detail including frame
alignment. No fork or frame misalignment, but I had dents and chips in
the frame from the impact with the ground. The wheels were good. They
wrote up an estimate for me for insurance and for the court (about $1300
with a new paint job at D Cycles). I ended up just eating the dents and
paint chips without getting them fixed, but replaced the handlebars, brake
levers, shift levers, rear derailer. I was able to bend the basket back
into shape and get the rack re-aligned myself. I also did a minor
correction to the rear derailer hanger. I put some pretty orange Testor's
model paint on the chipped areas.

These bikes are pretty tough. Steel, after all. But I'm really glad I had
it inspected by a good mechanic and had them write up a total repair
estimate. I've just recently been able to start riding again after healing
from my injuries and I feel pretty confident with the safety of the bike.
I cracked my helmet in the accident too. I've replaced it with a Giro
Caden in matte gray.

Good luck!

I just went out and tweaked the angle into the recommended range. It's

Re: [RBW] What draws you to a single speed bike?

2021-04-19 Thread Erik Wright
Hey Roberta,

I'm also in Philly and popped a ss/fixed gear into my rotation in February
2020. I've dabbled in fixed gear riding twice before this over the past 10
years, so for me I think a piece of it is nostalgia. I agree with what
folks are saying about the simplicity of having one gear. I find I just
think about my riding less when I don't have the option to shift. Go
faster? Pedal faster. Going uphill? Stand up.

Two other pieces for me are variety and perpetual tinkering ("what *other* kind
of bike could I ride?"). I got this bike (Mercier Kilo WT) mainly as a
winter bike, and it's fully fender-able and accommodates a pretty wide tire
(50mm max). It's not a zippy, race-y fixie like a lot of people like to
ride; it's just about as heavy as the rest of my bikes, but I like it.
Grant talked about this in a recent Blahg about their upcoming fixed/ss
model, but I like how the momentum of riding fixed carries you through the
undulations of the road.

I used to work in Roxborough (for non-Philly folks: a hilly northwestern
part of the city) and felt I'd never be able to get up to my office with
only one gear. In late 2019 we moved our office down here to South Philly
(flat) so I thought it was an appropriate time to add one to the rotation
as a "bop around town" kind of bike. Whenever I head into West Philly the
hills are just a refreshing challenge, but that's the case whether I have
gears or not.

Thinking about Will's recommendation, I think when compared to your Joe
Appa and Homer, a single speed would likely be a lighter bike that just
requires less thought. Just a nice bike to add in there to add some variety
in your riding experience.

[RBW] Re: brake levers on albastache bars

2021-04-13 Thread Erik Wright
I just snagged some of those levers as well and mounted them on some
Noodles. The inserts are to adjust the angle of the lever/hoods in relation
to the bar. On a drop bar, they change how much the hoods tilt back towards
you vs how far forward they tilt. They came in pretty handy with the Noodle
bars I installed them on, because the curve of the Noodle's bend to the
drops is much different than, say, a more modern ergo bar with a sharper
angled bend. The inserts allowed my to set the levers up with a flat
bar-to-hood position. I agree that they were very difficult to mount with
the inserts inside the levers- not sure why this is. Once they were past
the end of the bar, they moved smoothly. I just kinda muscled them on there
with the clamp fully loose.

Strange to explain without images, and maybe that's all gibberish. Google
didn't turn up much image-wise, but on an Albastache I'd recommend leaving
the inserts aside. They seem more necessary when top-of-the-hoods is a
riding position; less so on an Albastache where the levers are turned
sideways.
