Nice seeing you today Bill!
As I ease back into work...

For me, jettisoning the bike computer on my latest bike was a revelation -
no more worrying about miles and average speeds. Just pick a route and go,
no tracking. My goal is to do some of the epic Sonoma rides that I haven't
done, keep exploring Marin, and do my annual fall Mt. Diablo ride. And stay
healthy!

Happy New Year everyone.

[RBW] Re: Did you have a 2018 cycling goal? Did you achieve it?

2018-12-15 Thread nick
So my goal was to be more present in my life outside of cycling while still
putting in miles. I will hit 6,000 miles in the next 1-2 rides but my goal
was to maintain 100 miles a week without putting a strain on my personal
life and I think I've done that. The last few years I've worked 40+ hours
a week, commuted by car 2+ hours a day, taken 12 credit hour of school, and
rode 7000+ miles a year. I normally would have gone for a 4-6 hour ride on
Saturday but today I did about a 2.5 hour ride and got a bunch of work done
around the house. My wife appreciated it. Moderation is a good thing. If
I retire I might become one of those dudes who replaces their job with
cycling but for now this is good.

I've become motivated to track mileage and seat goals the easiest way
possible; my car's odometer. Twelve years old, 93k miles, 7750 annual for
that span which includes a good number of long road trips. I'm now going to
shoot for less miles on it this coming year by riding my bikes more.

[RBW] Re: Did you have a 2018 cycling goal? Did you achieve it?

2018-12-15 Thread Surlyprof
I haven’t figured out a consistently easy way to track my mileage on the bikes.
Therefore, my goal was more like Pam’s... car related. A few years ago,
during a drought, I put less than 2500 miles on my truck. Since then I’ve
tried to keep all driving below 3000 per year and have succeeded for the last
four years. I saw that the average US driver my age puts in almost 19000 miles
a year which seemed crazy to me. I’m not sure what 3000 or less car mileage
translates into in bike mileage but my rough guesstimate is around 2500-3000
annually. This makes me want to start a thread to solicit how people track
their bike mileage.

[RBW] Re: Did you have a 2018 cycling goal? Did you achieve it?

2018-12-11 Thread Christopher Cote
I had pretty modest goals for 2018. The only quantitative goal was to ride
enough at Kindgom Trails in Vermont enough to justify the season pass that
I purchased, and I met that goal. Other than that it was to ride as much as
possible and enjoy every ride. I think I pretty much met that goal as well.

For 2019 my goal is to get back to riding as much as I did in 2018. I had
knee surgery at the end of October and it will be several months before I'm
anything close to normal. I'm spending a lot of time on the trainer indoors
this winter, hoping to be able to hit the trails in the spring.

[RBW] Re: Did you have a 2018 cycling goal? Did you achieve it?

2018-12-11 Thread William R.
I agree this is a great thread. Very inspiring. I really like the idea of
throwing goals out there in front of where you are. This year has continued
a downward trajectory in overall mileage for me. I'm currently at 1,840+
miles on the year and I've given myself the goal of getting to 2k. I'm not
too upset about it because I had some very great experiences on the bike
this year. I'm 52 and I have two children, a 10 year old and a 14 yo. I
live in the burbs and commute into the city. It's hard to find the time but
I'm working on it. A general goal is to try to be active as much as
possible. Most days I walk to the train station and from the station to my
office on the other end of the ride (3.5 miles) and the same back home.
Back to the bike, when I was younger, I consistently did 5k+ mileage years
and logged three 7500+ years in my late 30's. As I get older, I envision my
schedule slowly cracking open again as my kids grow up. My goal is to
slowly grow the mileage back up. I would really like to ride more regularly
too. More days where I actually get on the bike. To that end I really like
Jon's 300 days a year goal. In 2019 I am going to try to tweak my schedule
and get out there more on a daily basis even if it's for just a half hour
or 45 minutes of hill climbing in the winter. Good luck to all with their
goals. There are a lot of good ones here!

Full SF Randonneurs Super Rando series.

10,+ miles for the year.

R-12 achievement unlocked. [12 consecutive months of 200km or more RUSA event ]

Super 600k [RUSA 600KM with 10,000 m/34,000 ft elev.]

My end of year RUSA mileage was 8 200k's, 3 populaires, 1 360k flèche, 2
300k's, 2 400k's, and 2 600k's. Plenty of those were mixed terrain rides. Plus
a hand full of century or 200k's I did by myself. Plus lots of PR's hit and
improved too.

For 2019 I will do the Super Randonneur series again with SFR and do PBP in
under 80hrs.

OK, I'll fess up: I'm a piker compared to most of those who've spoken up.
My return to bicycling has been relatively recent, just three years ago.
And my age and aspirations have more to do with retirement than mileage.
That being said, I was pleased to hit 1000 miles of recreational riding on
my new-to-me Clem this year. Add to that a hundred or so on the old

to enjoy my time on the bike, to look forward to opportunities to ride. I

satisfaction. I'll almost certainly do more miles next year. More
importantly, I'll almost certainly enjoy riding more as well. What's not to

[RBW] Re: Did you have a 2018 cycling goal? Did you achieve it?

2018-12-06 Thread Fullylugged
This is a very enjoyable thread. Thanks Bill for starting it.

I didn't ride as much as I could have but I met most of my goals this year. I
wanted to leverage my familiarity in the local scene to bring new riders into
cycling in general and RUSA in particular, and to increase rider diversity. All
3 of those have been good. I completed one less century or longer event than
planned. My average pace was faster than it's been since 2010, and more
climb/mile since then too. Both those figures and the number of days with a
ride were well above average for me. I wanted to enjoy riding more and that has
certainly happened. To help do that, I rebuilt some wheels to refresh one bike
and built up a new-to-me frame off this list that has turned out to be a
another super enjoyable bike to be on. So all in all, goals met and thankful
for the hours with friends on all kinds of roads in lots of places. If I make
it to Steve's age, I hope to be riding like that too. I met and rode with him
(and others of his Oxon Hill peloton) some years back and enjoyed the time a
lot.

Bruce Herbitter

[RBW] Re: Did you have a 2018 cycling goal? Did you achieve it?

2018-12-05 Thread Raymond Jensen
I've been tracking annual bike miles since 2007, and the last 3 or 4 years
I have averaged 5000 miles per year. That became my goal for 2018. I am
not into event rides, races or long distance rides. I usually like to ride
30 or 35 miles for a typical day trip.

I retired at the end of last year, so this year was a new experience with
more free time and independence. So far, I've pedaled about 6000 miles
this year. I was on a bike tour in Germany over the entire summer, and
pedaled about 2200 miles. That bumped up my odometer to bypass the 5000
mile goal easily. It was also a great adventure. During my work years, I
never had the free time to go on a long bike tour, especially far away from
home.

[RBW] Re: Did you have a 2018 cycling goal? Did you achieve it?

2018-12-03 Thread Jon BALER
I'm still working towards my goal, but I am on track to meet it. My goal
is to ride 300 days this year, and I track them by posting a photo from
each day. I've been done this for a few years now, but I take a break for
a couple of years in between to keep it from getting to repetitive.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/jon_baler/albums/72157664277091668

I'm up to 281 days/photos, but have some holiday vacations coming up which
will limit my riding days. Highlights of this year:

   - Seattle to Vancouver bike tour via the islands with my wife, which was
followed up with renting bikes during our Alaska vacation with extended
   family.
   - Transferred to a new office in May, which completely changed my
   commute.
   - Trained for and completed a 100 mile mountain bike race.
   - Rode every day in October.

I find it way more interesting than keeping a mileage log or using strava.
:)

Great thread, great responses!

Mileage wise I didn't really have a hard goal but I am thrilled that I'm
already 500 miles over my total from last year which speaks to alot of good
times on the bike. The main thing has been continuing the trend I started
last fall of extending my morning commutes in particular, even if it's only
an extra mile or so... it keeps the ride fresh, adds some miles and keeps
me in touch with so much more of the city. Getting up earlier has also
offered occasional opportunities for pre-work coffee meetups which has been
awesome.

Family-bike goals were just to get my daughter (now 2 1/2) to enjoy being
on the bike and to get out as a family as much as possible. Both of those
goals were definitely a success. My daughter loves the bike, both her Yepp
front seat and burley trailer. She'll definitely move on to a balance bike
next year which I'm excited about. I'm overdue a post on my HHH but
sufficient for here to say I love the bike and have been thrilled with the
purchase.

My goal is to ride my bike more than I drive. Last year I drove about 1986

miles away which I'll ride in a week.

No goals that were really made, just more like things I'd like to do on the
bike.

One was to get to the point where I could commute without feeling trashed
the next day. Did that.

One was a mileage I would have like to have achieved but got sidelined off
the bike since 9/30 for hernia surgery. Still not back on the bike yet.
Hopefully soon.

2018-11-30 Thread Julian Westerhout
My goal for the past five years has been to ride more miles each year on my
singles and our tandem than my wife or I drive in our car (we only own
one). We've been lucky enough to take a multi-week tandem tour 4 of the
past 5 summers. I commute by bike (only live 2.5 miles from work, if I go
straight there), she by bus. Even with at least one major car trip (usually
halfway across the country to visit family) each year that's been doable
for 3 of the past 5 years, and we came closer than I expected the other two
(one with several long road trips and time off the bike for knee surgery
for me, one with time off the bike for shoulder surgery for me).

[RBW] Re: Did you have a 2018 cycling goal? Did you achieve it?

2018-11-30 Thread Joe Gates
This is a great thread, it is fun to read about everyone's success over this
year! After 2 consecutive years of 3000 miles, I set a goal of 3500 for this
year. I should just make it by year's end. I also wanted to ride at least 90
days (next ride will hit that mark) and climb 200,000 feet (this might be tough
to hit, but I have a month so fingers are crossed). I am not as disciplined as
Bill about bike rotation with one bike usually getting the lion's share of the
miles. However, this year for the first time I have 2 different bikes that
logged 1000 miles. Add in one with over 500 and I would say I did a better job
of spreading the bike love around this year. Unfortunately I did not achieve
one of my goals this year which was to ride the Six Gap Century in North
Georgia. That is a goal every year and this year I was as prepared as I have
ever been. Unfirtunately my 8 year old daughter brought home the stomach bug
the weekend of the ride and it hit me the night before. Oh well, there is
always next year!

[RBW] Re: Did you have a 2018 cycling goal? Did you achieve it?

2018-11-29 Thread ascpgh
This year I was almost absolute in riding to work eery day, Steve's rain,
snow or shine, exceptions were mostly convenience to plans after work. That
was only a couple times, not really any loss of determination. The insights
of the group have helped develop this into a very reasonable proposition
that almost seems mundane.

I spent time showing someone else how to ride in the city, for
transportation, shopping and fun. I try not to advocate cycling to others
unless their interest comes first. Too many times their basic commitment
never equals their interest in the bike and associated gear,
disillusionment resulting. I don't imply my cycling motivations upon
curious or inquiring fledgling riders. All the times my effort was met
with mediocre consistency of commitment made it so much more enjoyable to
help someone who genuinely wanted to ride. It was important for her
independence, peace of mind, fitness, and fun. That's been rewarding to
develop and made up for all the previous less than successful involvements.

I plan to keep up the commuting, the fun rides and bike trips, disregarding
mileage unless a navigational need. If I ride when I want to, don't
hesitate for any reason, and be available to show others about including
cycling in their lives, it'll be another great year.

I met one of my goals, which was to complete a century. I did that in

All these stories/goals/non-goals are great to hear! Everyone living their

This year my unspoken goal has been to ride whenever possible, likely
inspired by Just Ride. So this year, different than any in the past, I've
ridden to work when possible, grocery store, or even to pick up dinner for
the family. I've spent more days on the bike than any year in the past and
I'm very happy with that. Also purchased my first Riv (Roadini) this year
too!!!

[RBW] Re: Did you have a 2018 cycling goal? Did you achieve it?

2018-11-28 Thread John Rinker
Fine question Bill. My goal was to ride the Great Divide MBR and to take my
sweet time doing it. My friend and I spent 64 days meandering along,
swimming in every lake, pond, river and creek we could find. We brought our
Tenkara rods and fished some of the finest trout waters in N.America. We
cooked delicious meals from an adequately stocked larder, and we sought out
every brewery along the way to sample the finest IPAs the American West has
to offer (basically, it was a 3000 mile pub crawl!). The weather was
stellar, the riding sublime, and the number of wonderful, generous people
that we met along the way only re-confirms what I already know: get people
outside, away from TV/media and the agitation it's designed to perpetrate,
and we are kind and curious. I saw this many years ago when I hitchhiked
around the country, and I saw it again by bicycle this past summer. People
are good. Put 'em on a bicycle and they are good and happy.

Cheers, John

ps. Never really counted kilometers, but I'd estimate I ride somewhere
between 10 and 10,000 per year. When I reach the age of 70, I think I might
start counting.

2018-11-28 Thread Steve Palincsar
10,000 only became a goal when it seemed within reach -- and,
unfortunately, thanks to an injury and recovery from surgery, I only
just failed to make it.  This year, thanks to historic levels of rain,
10,000 is far out of reach.  Right now, 9,000 is -- only barely --
within reach, but would require a daily average of just over 15 miles to
achieve.  Given the weather we've experienced all year, it'll take a run
of really good luck to accumulate those remaining 467 miles.  But who
knows.

The real goal is to ride as much as I can, as close to every day as
possible, and enjoy it.  That's good for you in every way possible.

Kudos to Steve. I know of only 1 other person who regularly set 10K as his
goal; Gary Blakeley, formerly of the boblist, who owned and drove a
semitruck around the state for Creamland Dairies (IIRC). He'd ride down to
So Broadway at 3 am, get his truck, pick up his load, make his deliveries,
return to ABQ late morning, and often ride a century. But he was far
younger then than Steve.

Me, I had a bad year, not meeting even my own very modest goal (3 K) for
various reasons, but I have to say that I have enjoyed my miles very much .

[RBW] Re: Did you have a 2018 cycling goal? Did you achieve it?

2018-11-27 Thread Bill Lindsay
There are some great goals (and goal-less goals) in this thread. Good on
all of y'all.

Jon, one of my methods I've used to make mini-goals inside my macro-goals
has been to 'wear level' my bikes. I put two or three bikes into the
active rotation and as soon as I hit 1000 miles on THAT bike on Strava, I
rotate it out. Once I've run out of bikes, I'll roll back through and take
them all up to 1500 or maybe 2000. The next bike that I will move INTO the
active rotation will be my Eroica bike: a 1983 Univega Gran Rally. Perhaps
there will be an Eroica California run for me as well this Spring. Can I
still sign up? Or am I too late?

[RBW] Re: Did you have a 2018 cycling goal? Did you achieve it?

2018-11-27 Thread Jon Spangler
Bill,

Last year (mid-2017), I decided to up my Eroica California (EC) 2018 stakes
and signed up for the the 89-mile Coastal Route (89 miles, 7000' of
climbing) this April 15, after riding the EC 40-miler in 2016 and 2017.
This April, I was only able to complete 62 miles and about 5000' of the
Coastal Route before being swept off the road at 5:00 pm. I had ridden 731
miles training for it--in retrospect, clearly not enough training miles,
not enough climbing work, and not enough dirt/gravel road work, either. (I
started my serious training in August, 2017, for EC 2018.)

My EC 2018 success-and-failure (successes = not injuring myself and having
a great time riding significantly farther and harder than I had at EC 2017;
failure = not completing the Coastal Route) spurred my 2018 goal--to try
the EC Coastal Route again in 2019 but significantly increase my pre-event
training. So far in 2018--since April 15, 2018--I have ridden 1137 miles on
my Eroica bike, a 1970s Windsor Profesional with wide (28mm F, 32mm R) 700C
clinchers. With four months to go, it is possible that I will double my
pre-Eroica 2019 training miles over EC 2018. I am looking. forward to
riding 1-2 centuries before EC 2019 on April 6, 2019.

I am losing weight and losing belly inches--both a little bit at a time--
as I firm up and work myself into better shape, and am having more fun,
especially since the ir cleared up last week and I can get back on my bike
after a three-week layoff!

2018-11-27 Thread masmojo
I believe I did around 2,400 miles last year, which was mostly commuting. I
didn't really have "a goal" so, it was what it was.

Now having done that I decided to try and up my game in 2018!
My goal was 3,200 miles minimum with a hoped for target of 4,000.
Good news is I've already hit 3,500, but due to a bacterial infection that
nearly killed me in August, my wife starting a new job, my kids activities &
record Fall rains 4,000 looks questionable.
No matter; @ 56Years old I've dropped 10+ lbs. Over 2018! At this rate I should
be my high school graduation weight in 5 years! LOL
FOR 2019 4,000 is my minimum mileage goal.

I did. And I missed most of them. No 200k brevet, no 50 miles a week. It’s like
being a stay at home dad was more than I thought it would be!

BUT I accomplished my largest cycling goal. I too my daughter on several rides

So I’m good.

2018-11-26 Thread Kevin Mulcahy
My goal for 2018 was to complete the Marji Gesick 50 mile mtb race. That's
a pretty grueling race in the U.P. of Michigan with a ton of climbing over
uber-technical old school trails. The race had DNF rate of 70% in 2017!

I signed up without having ever done any endurance mountain biking, and am
a pretty horrible climber, so just finishing the race was a big enough goal
for me. I only started mountain biking last summer. So to train, I
participated in the local endurance mtb series, and just put a ton of miles
on my mtb...Eventually I started losing weight and getting faster on my
bike. I ended up finishing the race 37th out of 250, and made it under my
goal of 9 hours. I rode my Trek Stache, a rigid 29+ MMB, setup with Jones
bars.

I've never really done anything "hard" like that before, and it was pretty
awesome process to watch my mph go up while by lbs went down. Next year, I
hope to complete the MG100, stay healthy and injury free, and have more
laid back fun on the bike. I've been riding about 3,000 miles the last few
years and that seems about right for me.

[RBW] Re: Did you have a 2018 cycling goal? Did you achieve it?

2018-11-26 Thread stoker
Hey Bill -

Great question! I never really tracked annual mileage (I have been riding
for over 45 years) until I started using Strava in mid-2013 to formally
track mileage. I knew that I rode a fair amount annually (I have 3 sons and
a wife who all like to ride + commuting regularly) - I logged a little
under 7,000 miles in my first full year tracking my mileage. I decided to
make it my goal to reach 10,000 miles in a year - I had a couple of years
of in the mid-9,000's and I began to think it may not be possible given my
family and work commitments. I should also mention that I live in Minnesota
and I only count actual outdoor rides (no Zwift, etc.). Last year (2017)
saw particularly mild weather all year - the favorable temperatures
combined with a commitment to train for the Leadville 100 MTB race allowed
me to FINALLY squeak past the 10k mile mark.

2018 was a different story - a cold, harsh winter (18" snowfall on April
15th) and a chilly fall (snow in mid-October) combined with some time off
the bike due to a few broken ribs has curtailed my mileage a bit. I
adjusted my goal for the year to 7,500 miles - I am currently at 7,257
miles.

Hopefully I can ride like Steve someday!

[RBW] Re: Did you stop using Compass tires?

2018-02-02 Thread lukeheller
I have been using the 35 non Jon pass tires on my Rando bike for 1.5 years now.
They have been amazing. Prior to going to London this past summer for LEL
1400km, I looked at the tires and thought... “hmm, I should replace those.”
Instead, I went against conventional wisdom and rotated the tires. I’ve put
probably 2,000 more miles on them since. And they’re still kicking.

I ride the standard casing BJP tubeless at 65psi rear, 60psi front. I’ve had 1
flat in, who knows 5-6k miles, on a 400k caused by a metal shard. Removed
shard, added air, sealed right up. The only other flat was one morning when I
walked into the basement and it went flat overnight due to low sealant. I love
the ride feel and the durability. I could ride a potentially more durable tire
but why suffer a dead riding tire?

I purchased some BJP EL to upgrade to. I’ll be doing that when I retire the
existing wheel set/tires to a different bike.
I also purchashed some EL 650bx48’s. I enjoy the WTB Horizons on my Elephant
but they are slightly dead feeling. I acknowledge those horizons will NEVER
wear out. Whenever the sealant dries up, I guess I’ll swap them then and
compare.

I scoffed at Compass tires for years feeling justified in not spending that
much for tires just to get more flats.
My experience has been entirely to the contrary.

[RBW] Re: Did you stop using Compass tires?

2018-02-01 Thread Eric Langley
I'm with you. But, I'm probably a bit placebo-prone when it comes to
differentiating between Compass tires and my perceived effort/resistance.

I have not had any real issues with flats on my 42mm Babyshoes. Very few in
3 years of riding them regularly (commutes, weekend centuries, etc). I did
have a few flats on the BonJon 35mm tires on my Trek, and found that they
were far more difficult to remove and mount quickly on the road than my
650B tires. This realization helped accelerate the logical conclusion of
going with the 650B format on both my commuter and rando-bike, both for
more commonality among my tires and wheels and also to make commute-flats
less common, and easier to repair.

For the cost given the average 18-month replacement time frame for me, I
like them just fine.

[RBW] Re: Did you stop using Compass tires?

2018-02-01 Thread Kieran J
I've had a couple pairs of the Gen. 1 Barlow Passes. I like them, but not
that much more than the Jack Brown Greens they replaced. I do admit they
have a nice silky ride.

The main downside over the JBGs in my experience was that the Compasses
were harder to mount perfectly round with no lumps. I found this on a few
different rims, in spite of some of the outlandish "mounting solutions"
discussed here and elsewhere over time. I haven't experienced that with
other supple/supple-ish tires like Schwalbe Thunder Burts and Clement MSO,
and it is so irritating it takes most of the enjoyment out of the supple
tire experience. Some other Panaracer tires have exhibited this for me too
(Soma B-Line, Soma Supple Vitesse, Col de la Vie) but interestingly, not
the JBGs.

Now that I live on the Wet Coast, I may have to downsize to 700x28s and
fenders for my previously-unfendered road bike. I've thought about going
with some EL Compass Chinook Passes but those tires (and the rest of the EL
variants) cost CAD$100+ *PER TIRE* here in Canada. Ummm!

No. I use RTP on my Trekendell in non-winter months (just switched to
Thunder Burts) and have had zero flats. I throw some Orange Seal in the
tubes. Also no flats on my 700x38 Barlows. One flat on my 700x32 Stampedes.
All are extra light versions. I don't put on mega miles, but right now
probably have the most on the RTP and Barlows. Will try to save up for a
pair of the 700x35 Bon Jon for my upcoming Ron Kitching rebuild. If I keep
the Clementine, and strip it down to a single speed street and dirt bike, I
would like to put on some Switchbacks.

Experience with:
- Barlow Pass, 2 sets
- Bon Jon, 2 sets
- Stampede Pass, 2 sets
- BSP, 1 set
- RTP, 1 set

Usage:
7-10,000 annual miles, of which 70% are northern New England dirt roads

Problems:
- flats
- cuts
- side wall rips
- tubeless oozing and gobbling up sealant

Preferred tires:
- Schwalbe Pro One TL 28, measuring 31-31
- Schwalbe G one (former s one), 30 , measuring 30
- WTB exposure 34
- WTB byway 650b 47
- WTB resolute 42

Schwalbe and WTB have tubeless figured out imho
They hand mount easily, inflate with a hand pump, hold pressure w/o sealant
etc.

I pulled mine off for the winter. I have been lucky and had only one flat
so far. I like them, and find them to be a luscious ride. Vee Rubber makes
a tire I like just as much. I have a pair of Intense Micro knobbies, which
Vee rubber made. Incredible tire, so I ordered some Vee Speedsters to see
if they were comparable in rolling resistance and suppleness. The Vee's
made me a fan, and I no longer look down my nose at Vee rubber. They can
make top shelf tires equivalent to the Compass. So will I buy more Rat
Traps when mine wear out? Probably not, as there are other tires that make
me as happy, for half the cost. Currently running studded snow tires for
the winter here in central Oregon.

Generally, I am making my Sam more offroadish--hence the tires (and lower

So seems likely that it was found in San Francisco, Oakland or Berkeley.

If you paid $100 for it then it's pretty much sure to be stolen. If you
contact Riv with the serial number they can look up who the original owner
is/was. If the original owner sold it you should still hopefully be able to
find out who they sold it to. Shouldn't be too tough to track them down.

I wouldn't say ahead of its time. It was totally of its time - and what a
good time it was! Nice touring bikes had really come into their own in the
early 80s - with long wheelbases, braze-ons for racks and fenders,
wide-range gearing. Many of the Japanese makers were building some sweet
tourers in the first half of the 80s - Miyata, Centurion, Nishiki,
Bridgestone, and more. In Bicycling Magazine in the early 80s, the ads were
dominated by good touring bikes, racks, bags, and everything needed to take
off cross country.

I had an article looking at some of the bikes that were available at the

not ahead of its time at all. We look back and like what we see better

Applying that to me, I'm using a 9 or 10cm stem on most of my bikes, and
I'd use a 12 or 13 with Albas.

i did, but you have to look at the bike you have, alba's (and boscos) can
compensate for a too long headtube as well, so take that into consideration, if
your current setup is perfect then yes a longer stem should be used to get the
position about the same.

i lowered my stem slightly as well, the alba's have some rise to them.

I did - I ride my Quickbeam to work every day, but it's just two
miles.
We recently put in bike hooks, because both my bosses ride to work,
and when the new programmer started riding in, the entrance was almost
impassable with bikes. A nice position to be in, if you like
transportational bikes.

In an attempt to make this interesting... I hang my bike from the rear
wheel because that seems to make the most of the limited space. To
keep the Carradice Junior strapped to my bars from dumping everything
onto the floor when I get my lunch (AAGH! Fibber McGee's closet!), I
unstrap the rear buckle from the stem and let it swing freely.

Congratulations on getting back on the bike - that can be a great
relief after five weeks.

5 weeks is awful. This is the second time I've been benched due to
injury in the last year and it gets BORING not being able to go
anywhere.

2010-05-23 Thread EricP
Nope. Wasn't at work on Friday. At a music camp in southern
Minnesota. However, did ride bike that day. About 47 miles on my
newest steel steed. But not a Rivendell. (Did ride the Hillborne on
these same trails last year at camp.)
