wow, what an amazing time! it was great to meet all of you! i'm glad the
location was a hit. here are a few
photos: https://drive.google.com/open?id=13Q7J96lIPBjr2K1L9VF0C37CJd7uC3Ue

got some more here, i didn't take that
many... https://www.instagram.com/fakemountains/

sorry for such a late start, i underestimated getting up there from the
campground and especially with a single speed bike (2 even!)... i guess for
next time i'd say pack a lunch for sure. didn't realize there weren't any
options in the park itself. and i would definitely want to have a next
time. thanks for making it so much fun, all of you!

2019-09-22 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
It was awesome! I left the house at 4:30 after just enough sleep and caught
a couple trains to meet Roberta in NJ for a pleasant drive up to
Minnewaska. We talked of Vegas (but not too much, what with the what
happens in Vegas stays rule (though it's not so secret, so I'll whisper
it... Leah's way cool)), great quotes from the rivlist, and art in Rocky
Philadelphia. Stopped and filled up on maps and water at the Mohonk
visitors center and happily drove up Cardiac Hill to meet the crew. Got
called out by rangers for no helmet (putted it right on my head, little
sweat, thanks for the warning Mark) and I took some, but never enough,
pictures- https://photos.app.goo.gl/zKPe5qjBMy3CKoWb9

I really like seeing these pics of the East Coast RBW meetup this weekend.
Looks like some fun riding with nice views and makes me want to get out on
my Sam. There's pretty good riding here in MD but not so much with long
distance vistas at elevation.

Kai, scratch that. I am thinking time from New Paltz to the train, not up
in Minnewaska. It's a hike. I do think rail trail will take you through
most, but it will be dark and long with some areas of traffic, and after a
long day. I would look for plan B unless you head that way early afternoon.

Hi Kai. I've never come from Minnewaska to pick up the train (in fact I
rarely train it on recreational rides) but yes, there is an E-W rail trail
that shoots off the one that runs North South from Gardiner to

that is good would be the Lower Awosting Parking lot (west of the main

The parking lot up by the lake is great as you avoid the steep path up.
Never fear as if you park in Lower Awosting, you will get to enjoy the
 nice
walk up (or ride if you got the gear for it) and you won't have to go up
the hill at the end of the ride!. So think of it like a roller coaster,
 you
gotta get up the launch hill, then we roll up and down
enjoying breathtaking views along the way. I think there is cell service
for most of the ride but if you want, you can download the route here.

 https://ridewithgps.com/trips/3699799

At any rate, I am driving a Black Honda ridgeline, (grey haired guy on
a orange and black Sam) we can gather up on top and visit till the campers
and late comers arrive. If memory serves, there is a paved lot on the very
top and a gravel lot, just below it. I am thinking that I will hang out up
on the top somewhere around the kiosk maybe making coffee and waiting on
the fog to clear... it will be good!

Some info about the area...if you are coming in from the NYS Thruway,
you will head west on the state road towards New Paltz, New Paltz is a
college town, there are restaurants, motels, stores...even a starbucks!
then continue on up the Mt to Minnewaska.

Also, if you have time or are staying over and you want some other
riding, there is a Rail Trail starting down town that will run north and
south, some of it is unpaved. Also the rail trail running east from town
will connect you to the "Walkway over the Hudson" state park...not to be
missed to ride across the Hudson river on a car free bridge, really nice
and this trail continues east for miles, nice flat paved.

For those that want more challenge, there are lots of gravel routes and
road routes...just consult Ride with GPS or some such app. I think that
 the
carriage trail loop will be great for a meetup and social ride.

I am not on the Facebook so I can't post but we can gather on the lawn
between the parking lot and the lake. I will grab a picnic table where
you can see from the parking lot. Early arrivals will be able to park on
top, I would think that we picked a weekend between summer and leaf
peeping so not so crowded. Where or how do I drop a pin?

so when ya get parked, just make your way over towards the grassy area
between the parking lots and the lake, I will try to scope out a picnic
table or 2.

in the mornings, its generally dog walkers and hikers so it should be
all good. Once a few of us find each other, it will become obvious

one helpful thing to print or download is the park map, but they
probably have them at the gate.

The parking lot up by the lake is great as you avoid the steep path up. Never fear as if you park in Lower Awosting, you will get to enjoy the nice walk up (or ride if you got the gear for it) and you won't have to go up the hill at the end of the ride!. So think of it like a roller coaster, you gotta get up the launch hill, then we roll up and down enjoying breathtaking views along the way. I think there is cell service for most of the ride but if you want, you can download the route here.

At any rate, I am driving a Black Honda ridgeline, (grey haired guy on a orange and black Sam) we can gather up on top and visit till the campers and late comers arrive. If memory serves, there is a paved lot on the very top and a gravel lot, just below it. I am thinking that I will hang out up on the top somewhere around the kiosk maybe making coffee and waiting on the fog to clear... it will be good!

Some info about the area...if you are coming in from the NYS Thruway, you will head west on the state road towards New Paltz, New Paltz is a college town, there are restaurants, motels, stores...even a starbucks! then continue on up the Mt to Minnewaska.

Also, if you have time or are staying over and you want some other riding, there is a Rail Trail starting down town that will run north and south, some of it is unpaved. Also the rail trail running east from town will connect you to the "Walkway over the Hudson" state park...not to be missed to ride across the Hudson river on a car free bridge, really nice and this trail continues east for miles, nice flat paved.

For those that want more challenge, there are lots of gravel routes and road routes...just consult Ride with GPS or some such app. I think that the carriage trail loop will be great for a meetup and social ride.

"Riding from the campground to the ride start/minnewaska parking lot is
about 6 miles and 1,200 feet of elevation."

I'm trying to figure the best place to park--at the ride start or at Mohonk
preserve and meet you at the campground.

I usually ride up to 20 miles on flat ground at 10-11 mph (I can go longer
on flat ground.) , so am not a strong rider. I have a hard time on steep
hills. I don't know how to interpret the elevation information. Is this
very steep? Or, is it just unrelenting and, therefore, tiring. Google
says it's a 59 minute ride, which concerns me for a 6 mile stretch. Please
don't overestimate my ability (or age) when responding. (Kai- can drop you
off anywhere you want.)

Thanks.

Alright folks here’s three points that will be helpful wrangling campers,
drivers and permits etc.

https://goo.gl/maps/o7VsC6uvaCTiZZGA7

(This is essentially a google maps route that starts at the campground, stops
at the visitor center (permits) and ends at the ride start/minnewaska parking
lot)

Meet at the campground parking lot at 10 if you’re camping and/or want to ride
to the start. Meet at the ‘Ride Start’/minnewaska parking lot at 11 ready to
roll. (Refer to directions linked above)

I think the only people that will need to pay for minnewaska are people that
drive in/and park. Everyone will need to pick up a permit at the Shawangunk
Visitor Center whether you ride or drive (See directions above).

Of note:

Riding from the campground to the ride start/minnewaska parking lot is about 6
miles and 1,200 feet of elevation. The rest of the route is pretty tame. (the
views and downhills are worthy of the effort imho)

FYI there’s a killer traditional German Restaurant called Mountain Brauhaus
about 4 mins/.5 mi from the campground. I plan on riding over around 6 on
Friday night. They’re only open till 9 pm so it gets a little packed/crazy on
the weekends. If anyone would like to join me, let me know and I’ll make a
reservation (otherwise I’ll take a risk waiting for a bar spot).

Also there’s a nice deli across the street from the restaurant open 6:30
am-6pm. Great to-go sandwiches /snacks/drinks and the breakfast sandwiches are
to die for. So, if you’re not into camp food there’s other options very close

7:34 at Mahwah station would be perfect if you want to go with
me.You'll be longer on the train, shorter in the car. The Garden State
Parkway is closer to NY, so you'll be shorter on the train, longer in the
car.

You have 10 more days to decide and look for a NY ride. If you want to go
with me, just send me a PM and we'll coordinate off line. At least you
know you have a ride, even if you do need to get up middle of the night to
start the trip! :)

Not real close, but I'm leaving from Morris County 7-7:30 am, coming back

you up. I'll be driving up I287 to I87, so if you find a train that takes
you along my route (Franklin Lakes or Mahwah, perhaps?), I can pick you up
there, also. Offer is open to Kai or anyone else.

It it's raining, I'll probably still go up, but I won't be biking.

I don't ever go there during the "season" but I bet it does get crowed

experienced a crowd, mostly just pass a hiker or 2.

another Sunday activity would be to break camp, stop in the diner in New
Palz, then ride the "Walkway over the Hudson" park, there are several
places to park along the rail trail, then about 3 miles to the Hudson
River crossing...a must see if you have never been., that would put you
close to the thruway for heading home.

Thats the basic loop around the park...it is beautiful, the views are
breathtaking, you will need lots of time for picture taking, film camera
discussions, and general lollygagging / coffee making etc. There are more miles
if your so inclined, heck you can bomb the public roads and go to New Platz and
up the trail to Kingston, stop in and see Bryan at Utility Bicycle works, just
whatever, the Hudson Valley is probably one of the most scenic and historic
places in the USA.

The Route is stone/gravel carriage trails, no cars and this time of year, not
so crowded. The route rolls up and down, no killer hills except the first path
up from the main road and like they say...I never go for a walk without my
bike. I have done the loop on a single speed and a Raleigh sports 3 so its ok.
700x 23c tires might make the ride a little harsh but I don’t think that is a
concern with Riv folks.

could access more stuff by paying the fee at Mohonk (noted in link below),
which gives you access to Minnewaska as well as the two Mohonk properties:

2019-09-08 Thread Ben Obrien
ok, since we are getting close to the meetup date, here are a few things:

there's a fee to bike at the Mohonk preserve, it's $20 bucks for the day,
and will allow access to Mohonk Preserve, Minnewaska state park and the
Mohonk Mountain house property. if you only buy a Minnewaska pass that's
the only place you can go without paying another fee. we don't need to
visit all 3, but it might be fun/make for a more interesting time. up to
you.

i'll be camping friday and saturday night, saturday is the main event,
meet at 10 at the parking lot near the Minnewaska park office and we'll get
moving shortly after that. bring coffee outside gear, like a stove and camp
mug, we can stop and make coffee along the way.

any questions, send me a message. thanks!

also i have a handful of patches left, if anyone is interested.

thanks Roberta!

FYI anyone interested, i created a Facebook event page, so we can get an
idea of how many people...

https://www.facebook.com/events/577374356128518

no pressure to rsvp but it's there if ya want to.

i'm getting there friday evening, just to camp and meet people. really only
riding we are doing is saturday, sorry if that wasn't clear. we can ride
sunday too if people want.

this is the route that Spencer shared as a
possibility: https://ridewithgps.com/trips/3699799 i'd be into this and
maybe a little more, with a coffee outside stop along the way.

Not that this is an issue for all, but kid's Spring Break is the week of
April 15th. We already were planning on a bike trip on Rails to Trails

great. But coming North from DC works also.

I am thinking the early spring idea is before that, though. I will sit
back and let the behind the sceners do their best. Thanks for coordinating.

On the works behind the scene w/ a few of us for a North Easter meet-up.
My apology for not being more vocal on that. Stay tuned. Should get
something up this week.

CHEERS!

[RBW] Re: RBW 25 -Atlantic side of things

2019-01-27 Thread REC (Roberta)
I'll do the ride in Minnewaska (I have family halfway between Philadelphia,
where I live, and there). In fact, I'll do any RBW group ride within about
100 radius of philly. However, I don't camp, so will need lodging option
or a one day trip. I'd love to meet more RBW members.

Thanks for coordinating this.
