How to compare RPM versions?

2002-08-16 Thread Werner Puschitz

Is there a simple way to find out which RPM version is newer?

For instance I have a bunch of RPM files with the same RPM name but with
different version numbers.
Doing a numeric comparison doesn't work in all cases since some versions
contain letters like "x", "p", etc. And doing a string comparison doesn't
work either when you have numbers like "9" and "13" which would result in
"9" being greater.

Is there a simple method to find out which RPM version is newer?

Thanks
Werner

First, new rpm available again, using another server:
http://www.tuxfan.homeip.net:8080/rpms/xf86ttfontool-0.1-15.i386.rpm

I have an rpm containing the 32 bit versions, rather than downloading via
a script. I'll make it available at some point.

The license for the 32 bit versions is quite similar, and also seems to
allow redistribution.

Interesting, but I've got to think they won't allow these sites to
continue for long. Or are they allowed under older licenses? That
would be good.

I did an rpm of the 16 bit ones a while back (before cabextract was
around), and that license seems to me allows redistribution:

Did you run mii-tool, or another diagnostic utility at that time?
By default mii-tool with no device argument tries eth0 -7, hence the

I found the fonts in several locations:

http://nuoriso.hel.fi/__files/ms_truetype_core_fonts_for_the_web/Win95-98-NT/index.html

I just now found a mirror of the MS font site.
http://web.archive.org/web/2420210719/http://www.microsoft.com/opentype/fontpack/default.htm
Time to modify xf86ttfontool again, I think.

I just found out that MS has discontinued the core fonts for the web
program. It appears that they have decided to stop providing download
capability for these fonts. Less than neighborly of them. ;)
http://www.microsoft.com/typography/fontpack/default.htm

I've found another server that has the fonts available, and rebuilt the
modified xf86ttfontool.
http://www.tuxfan.homeip.net:8080/rpms/xf86ttfontool-0.1-14.i386.rpm
http://www.tuxfan.homeip.net:8080/rpms/xf86ttfontool-0.1-14.i386.rpm

The older rpm with the non functional download URL has been downloaded
over 100 times in the past 3 weeks. You'd think someone might have
mentioned that it isn't working. :)

Weird Network problem

2002-08-16 Thread Joe Giles

List,
I am running RedHat 7.3 with all the current patches and the current Kernel. I have 2
NIC cards (100baseT HD/FD for both) and I use IPCHAINS with MASQ. Now, initally, the
network works great. But after about an hour (sometimes longer, sometimes shorter) the
network seems to simply slow down. Like a buffer is filling up and not releasing. I
can initally ping a host on the internet with 32 ms, and an hour later, it up to 3402
ms. When I run one NIC, this doesnt happen. Only with 2 NICS (That, BTW, both run fine
in the same system seperatly) does this happen. Maybe MASQ needs to clear a buffer or
something. When I restart the network (/etc/init.d/network restart) it all goes back
to normal...

Any ideas as to why...

Let me know if you need any further information.

Thanks

OTOH, some companies will release binary drivers under a BSD license to
protect their proprietary API and not the source code under Linux. Some
would rather have a binary driver than none at all.

While BSD does tout stronger security and networking performance, it isn't
just for servers. If you look at the ports database, it's quite complete.

Yes and no. Linux is more in the news and popular these days, so you
might find user apps coming out for linux before BSD (of course the
linux apps will still run on BSD), but some companies will release drivers
for BSD before linux so they don't have to give away the source code. (GPL
vs BSD license).

The surefire method is to pull the drive &/or card and look at them.

Otherwise, dmesg, /proc/pci, /proc/scsi, lspci, and related.

For capacity in MiB:

Help: running LDAP in RHL73

2002-08-16 Thread Joe Tseng

I attempted to fire up the LDAP server that came with RHL73 for the first
time today. I made modifications to my /etc/openldap/slapd.conf and used
/etc/init.d/ldap to start the daemon. I'm getting this message:

# service ldap start
Starting slapd: /etc/openldap/slapd.conf: Permission denied
[FAILED]

I had my permissions for slapd.conf set to 700 per recommendations from a
book and the owner was set to root; this message goes away if I change it to
740. I also do not get any messages if I run "slapd -f slapd.conf" from the
command line. Any have any ideas why this occurs? I thought init scripts
were always run as root.

Also I have my rootpw in slapd.conf encrypted. Would this be acceptable if
my permissions were 740?

That is really low indeed because according to last month's Linux
Journal magazine a generic Pentium III based router should be able to
attain sustained throughput to the maximum on a 100mbps line
something like a sustained 90mbps or something like that. I have a AMD
K6-200 that does way better than 2mbps! And that's the stock Redhat 7.3
kernal with IPTables.

You may want to give this a read...
http://linux.oreillynet.com/pub/a/linux/2000/09/28/LinuxAdmin.html?page=1

You don't mention what type or how much RAM is in the machine. I would look
to that as the best place to start. But since it is older hardware (well, not
real old but everything always advances), your RAM might be a little slow or
not enough. Remember that you are trying to process everything all the cards
see, it is very RAM intensive and if it has to go to swap even a little bit
it will die down a lot.

You may also want to ensure that the cards have set to Full duplex and max
speed. Many times the cards will negotiate wrongly with switches and go to
the lower speed. You might have to force them high. Doficulty of that will be
driver dependant.

Good luck.

I've got a dual PII 500MHz as a router in my office. Its running
RH7.2 and routing to its heart's content. No filtering,
masquerading, etc.; it's just passing internal packets around our

I can only seem to get about 2Mbits/sec. That seems pitiful.

RE: LinuxConf - seems to have dissapeared with 7.3

2002-08-16 Thread Anthony Abby

I think this question is not so easy to answer as it might seem. There
have in fact been some problems with LinxConf in the past, but in it's
defense I think that was more the case because there have been so many
changes in configuration files etc when you build a utility that
does as much as it does it can become cumbersome keeping up with the
development inherent in the different distros. Case in point was the
shift from Redhat 6.2 to 7.0. Does anyone not remember all the grousing
about Redhat's changes in 7.0??

I installed Linuxconf on 7.3 and it works great for me. Have yet to
encounter an error.

Many users complained about it messing up config files, including yours
truly. There were quite a few, and I'm sure that was a major force for
dropping it altogether. It was still on the CD on 7.1, maybe 7.2, but
it wasn't installed on any install except an "everything" install. It
was mentioned that it was going away. Now it has.

But, just like many other things that used to be included and no longer
are (xv among them), one can still locate and install them. Linuxconf
is still actively maintained for Redhat. It just doesn't get included.

Assuming you use either KDE or Gnome, it will be in the Settings menu
and/or control panel for that WM.

That would be a good place to start looking for lockups. I've seen
those things cause lockups on a number of machines, including one of my
own. I am able to safely run most by manually running xscreensaver at
startup. But I couldn't find any way to turn some of them off in either
desktop without turning them all off. With xscreensaver they can be
controlled individually, and it can even be made to run whatever KDE
screensavers are installed in any WM: Gnome/Sawfish, KDE, IceWM, FVWM,
XFCE, etc.

I run version 7.1 on my home PC mostly for typesetting documents using the
tex system.
I was wondering whether in the 7.3 release, you have updated the tetex-latex

copy only the necessary old revtex style files to a local directory rather
than a full installation.

Also didn't you used to have all the howto's as part of you website?

Thanks for your time

Re: LinuxConf - seems to have dissapeared with 7.3

2002-08-16 Thread Anthony Abby

One point I neglected to point out. Linuxconf is actually comprised of
several RPMs if you want the full GUI.

Here's a description of the packages from their Redhat download page.

linuxconf: This is the main package. Everyone needs it.
You do not need any X library to use it.
linuxconf-gui: This is an optional GUI front-end. It works on any
distributions
gnome-linuxconf: This is another GUI front-end. Pick this one or
linuxconf-gui. It works on recent distributions. Note that many
distribution ships an outdated version of gnome-linuxconf.
linuxconf-lang-XX: This provides the language translations
English is included in the first package.
linuxconf-devel: This provides the tools and libraries needed by module
developpers.
linuxconf-lib: This is the runtime for independant utilities using the
Linuxconf devel toolkit.
linuxconf-util: This a a set of optional utilities, shellmod, for one.
linuxconf-X: This contains various modules useful to configure X (mouse
and keyboard)

Redhat no longer ships Linuxconf with 7.3, however it's still alive and

You haven't done the RPM update that's part of RH 7.2. You're also
installing the wrong version of apt-get. The -fr8 release is for RH7.3.

Go back to apt.freshrpms.net and get the right version, and install the
updated rpm package and you'll be an apt-get update && apt-get upgrade
away from being up to date.

As I said, I am going to update the whole server to RH 7.3, which has

I don't know if I would call them cheap but we bought a 15/30GB dlt on
ebay for $235 about three years ago and the guy threw in 10 brand new
tapes too. Daily backups since then from 8 machines with amanda with
zero media problems. I think these things are about as bullet proof as
tapes get. I had WAY back, a little seagate 1/4" job that was as slow
as an 8088 and a pain since the tapes just are not that sturdy.

I think the thing that really got me going toward the dlt was the
500,000 write lifetime. and 30 year shelf life. Not sure I belive that
but hey sounds good.

I am sure there is cheaper better faster stuff out there now but it
works for us.

netstat -ta
Take a look at the State column of the output. If it shows LISTEN, then the
system is listening at that port.

$ ssh localhost
$ telnet localhost
$ ftp localhost

If the first responds, it's working. If it doesn't, it isn't. Ditto
for the last two.

As an added check, edit your sshd_config file to disallow Root logins.
They're enabled by default.

Run the following command:

chkconfig --list

And check if ssh (or ssh2) appears listed.

For example, in my box:

[root@linux0037 root]# chkconfig --list|grep ssh
sshd2 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on4:on5:on6:off

Which means that runlevel 3,4,5 have it on.

Hope this is what you were looking for.

This isn't always guaranteed to work. If package A splits into A and B,
and A now has a dependency on B that it didn't before, rpm -F will not
catch it. up2date will.

Before you say this is very theoretical, let me point out that I've seen
this happen *many* times with Mandrake's betas as applications were
split between the app and its related libraries. Can't say I've seen it
happen often with Red Hat.

I tried some variations of the command, but still nothing. Do you have

Re: how to check if you have ssh set up

2002-08-16 Thread Jose Vicente Nunez Zuleta

Run the following command:

chkconfig --list

And check if ssh (or ssh2) appears listed.

For example, in my box:

[root@linux0037 root]# chkconfig --list|grep ssh
sshd2 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on4:on5:on6:off

Which means that runlevel 3,4,5 have it on.

Hope this is what you were looking for.

JV.

how to check if you have ssh set up

I'm fairly new to linux, so i'm not sure if this is the place to ask this
question.

I'm setting up a linux box as a server. But, i want to double check what

I've trying looking for instructions on how to do this, but i got a whole

I am writing scripts to log information when using the 'xterm'. In the

Does anybody know what I can use for the Linux operating system?

for uw-imapd (univercity of washington, authors of the wu-ftpd) -> YES, the

For Cyrus Imapd - no. Sendmail and Cyrus might be integrated into a solution

seems like you eill need popt and gnorpm updates too IIRC. There are
quite a few updates for 7.2. I would be a good idea to upgrade them all

I have never used the up2date service but it seems like a good thing for
a single machine. I keep a directory on the lan with all the updates dn
go a rpm -F on it occationally from each machine on the network.

Hmm a certain amount of irony involved in suggesting using up2date for a
aptget install, No? I guess ftping the files rpm -F ing them and then
it will give you something to test your aptget install on, assumming you
can update the aptget service from itself:)

Need help splitting PS file

2002-08-16 Thread jonny . axelsson

I need to split up my Postscripfile in pages.
How can i do this the best way.
I have problem when i use psselect.

I'm sending my document with an network printer to my server and there
the printspooler sends it to my script where i want to split up the ps file
into
the seperate pages that are sent.

Now i loop over this row for i times (where i is the number of pages).

psselect -p$i ${psfile} > ${pspage}.$i

The first page works fine but the next pages dont work, i can send them to
the printer but not convert them with ps2pdf then it complains on the ps
file format.

You shouldn't have _any_ mail going to root. While there is not really a lot
of e-mail based virii available for Linux, it is considered good practice to
ensure that nothing comes from an outside source to your root account.
Obviously the invidual in charge of the machine usually has (and should) a
seperate account for their regular usage, so you should have all mail for
root sent to that address.

It is as simple as putting a new alias in /etc/aliases and running
newaliases. Obviously when using an alias you can send it anywhere you like
be it another local account or some remote one.

That should do it.

Folks use mii-tool. It's mii-diag, but user friendly. It's in the
net-tools package under redhat.

[root@flory iso]# whichrpm mii-tool

[root@flory iso]# mii-tool --help
usage: mii-tool [-VvRrwl] [-A media,... | -F media] [interface ...]

Ok, I think I got it to work, or communicate anyway, but all I see is
[[[pp][][]BBB][][[]]

Looks like a COM port config issue.. You guys got me on the right track, and I
appreciate it. I think I can figure out the rest (However, any additional help is
always welcome :-P)

Thanks again

assumming the machine your are telnetting from (I'll call it local) is
running x you should be able to telnet to the remote machine and set the
DISPLAY variable to the local machine.

export DISPLAY ip.of.local.machine:0

then starting any x app will try to connect to the X server running on
the local box. You wil hopfully need to grant access to the remote box
with something like

xhost +ip.of.remote.machine

BTW if you were using ssh which is WAY more secure if you have the
updates you can configure it to do the X forwarding thing automatically.

Go to the Real Player download page and click on "System Requirements",
then "previous player versions".

you will probably need to be root to have /sbin included in your PATH
unless you have dinked with your profile

This is a good resource and the inittab lines mentioned in previous
posts should get you going. You can also get console messages to be
spit out in case you are having problems with the box and want to be
able to see what is going on.

google for linux serial console seeems like there is a HOT on it too.

FWIW ttyS1 is COM2 not COM1 ttyS0 would be COM1

Can't Open Display: :0

2002-08-16 Thread Joseph Wright

I am trying to get X to start when ever I launch and X app like xclock,
but right now I just get Can't Open Display: :0.

I have tried DISPLAY=:0.0 which still gives me the same error.

I am receiving this when trying to launch xclock from the physical
machine, but my next step is there a way I can launch xclock via telnet
and have it show up on the physical machine and not on the remote side.

thanks

Re: BSD vs Linux ?

2002-08-16 Thread Matt Rowley

> As you said, BSD is UNIX not Linux. Has been around for 30 years I
> believe.

The original AT&T Unix by Thompson and Ritchie is around 30 years old.
"BSD" as in the Berkeley Software Distribution is 25.
You keep referring to FreeBSD, but that's just one of several flavors
of BSD. FreeBSD is only 10 years old.

> It (FreeBSD) will run Linux apps and gui by their ports

FreeBSD runs linux apps via its emulation code in the kernel. The
ports collection has nothing to do with it. Ports is FreeBSD's (and
OpenBSD's) way of installing/managing software.

This is just plain wrong. FreeBSD makes a great workstation and can
run all the window managers you can think of that run on linux.
OpenBSD and NetBSD are also perfectly good for the desktop.
I run FreeBSD 4.6 on one of my desktops with XFree86 4, Blackbox, and
KDE 3. I have OpenBSD 3.1 with XFree86 4 and Blackbox window manager
on my IBM Thinkpad laptop.

Linux is more popular (especially from a commercial perspective) and
tends to have newer hardware sooner than the BSDs. Mac runs a twisted
meld of FreeBSD, NetBSD, some of the original 4.4BSD Lite, as well as
the Mach kernel developed at Carnegie-Mellon.

Re: Connecting on COM 1

Yes, that is correct. I understand all the facets of Serial, just not sure how to hook
it up to a Linux system. The reason I wanted to do this is so I can get console access
to my server in-case my network goes down and I have to restart the server or a
service.

I will continue reading.

Thanks for the info.

I can set this now, just need to figure out what the setting is for /etc/modules.conf
