Making MS pay....
Hi everyone, I presume here everyone use and love Linux and does NOT like MS's monoply. I once run across a tech coloumn, saying that the lability clause in EULA may have some legal problem. i.e. Software companies may NOT be able to weave all responsibility of all the damage directly and indirectly cause by buggy software(like MS-Office and MS-Win). Imagine you can recover some $ from MS for you past frustating experience with MS! And companies can claim loss cause by their OS!(Consider how many virus, isn't that the designer fault?) Organize a ex-Window user class lawsuit! That would (1)Keep them busy enough from engaging legal tatics against OSS; (2) Make them REALLY accountable for what they done(If, for instance, one of their patch cause data loss, they SHOULD pay and NOT blaming their customer!), therefore REALLY improve their product's security; (3) Make them behave, and Stop hostile tatics toward any MS critics. MS has billions, let none of it use to destory our future. This is just an idea, let's have legal fun with MS. Let them know law is NOT always on their side! Epson Perfection 1260 foto install under 7.3
I got this scanner yesterday. I have never worked with any usb devices under linux, I have never worked with sane. I downloaded the iscan rpm from Epson. It installed without problems. When i run scanimage it says: no scanner devices found. Do i need to configure sane? According to the instructions that come with the scanner, a florescent light need to come on when the lid is opened. No sutch light comes on. I want to know if the problem is with configuration only or a physical problem with the scanner. In /proc/bus/usb/devices it looks as if the usb controler knows about the scanner connected to it. tia Willem -- Willem van der Walt Information Services Directorate Department of Health South Africa tel: 27 12 3120700 -- redhat-list mailing list unsubscribe mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=unsubscribe https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list

Remember, these decisions are made by big time businessmen with $$Billions at stake. I called IBM today for fun and talked to a sales rep. He said things like: I feel your pain. Believe me I have lost some million dollar sales because of this issue. There is nothing he can do except take my complaint to his supervisor. Re: Getting Linux on a retail laptop, without paying for Windows
What I've heard on this matter is that the M$ contract states only that builders can no longer sell "empty" chassis. There must be AN OS with the computer. This was to counter the practice of quantity purchasers buying blank boxes, (and by M$'s concern) loading a single copy of some M$ OS on dozens of boxes with only one license. But, they would be hauled into court by every company and State in the US if they went so far as to say it HAD to be an M$ OS. So they left it as *an* OS knowing full well that theirs would be the most likely candidate, and thus another sale made. Not wanting to loose thousands upon thousands from customers not wanting to spend the extra for the installed OS, BUT, also not wanting to breech or lose the contract with M$, for these special customers they would build an empty chassis to the customers' specs, then, just before sealing up the box, they toss in a floppy containing a copy of "free DOS". Thus, they have met the contract stipulation of "providing *an* OS, but not having to charge the client for the product, or installation. I haven't confirmed this for myself. Re: root, superusers, and mounting...
Thanks. Since I don't yet know what fstab is, and since the "sudo" suggestion offered by Todd sounds like it is exactly what I was looking for, I'm now wrestling my way through that process. I do have a pretty good book. But I'm not one to read those things from cover-to-cover. I tend to "discover" my way through them. :-) And with the occasional hint here-and-there, I tend to learn pretty quickly. At this point, the terminal window I'm trying visudo in is just about worn out. So I must be getting close. :-) I've gotten it to open the sodoers, now I just need to get it to LET ME EDIT the darn thing. Re: Linux and Oracle
I might have the answer to this one. Have you sorted it yet? If not, I've often found missing links in Oracle distributions. You'll need to a) manually create the link, with: ln -s libcltntsh.so.9.0 libcltntsh.so b) ensure that directory is in your LD_LIBRARY_PATH LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH There may be others missing too. Find them all in one go by running an 'ldd' over the sqlplus binary. This will show all the dynamically linked libararies it will need to run. Hope this helps. I'm currently diagnosing a home PC problem regarding a system lockup. Mine's a Compaq motherboard, and the system was regularly freezing under Win 2k. You've got a few choices. The easiest (and I'm *not* a kernel guy) would be to grab the sources once, apply your changes as a patch, and then rebuild the package. Give it a version that will not be superseded by up2date. By default, up2date will ignore kernels anyway (see the package skip list in /etc/sysconfig/rhn/up2date). When running up2date, you can give it a list of source directories for where to go get the updates (see the --packagedir option). NFS-mount your kernel package directory and up2date will find your kernel first which could then be forced. Your version would be higher than Red Hat's, so your's should be chosen. When a new kernel comes out, update your patch if required, rebuild your package, and copy it to your packagedir location (after testing it of course!). .../Ed -- Ed Wilts, Mounds View, MN, USA mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Member #1, Red Hat Community Ambassador Program -- redhat-list mailing list unsubscribe mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=unsubscribe https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list

RE: RHCE
Oh I am. I have got a postfix -> MySQL -> Courier Imap -> Pop before smtp system going now. I didn't do it on my own but used some how to's we had at the company but I did solve some issues with RedHat to make it work and learned to trouble shoot using the logs. I know that sounds simple but it's not obvious to a windows flunky. I hope to have this system installed at a clients before the end of the month. SOHO system with an iptables Nated firewall, tripwire, apache, dns, and the mail system. Will use SSH to talk to it. I think I will try to not use Webmin this time as that seemed a crutch. So, I am working hard at it but I can clearly see that when something goes wrong I have limited diagnostic skills. Re: root, superusers, and mounting...
Hi Joe. Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. And sorry I wasn't more clear about my actions. What I did was take the user account I created during installation, "edit", and while logged into "root", change the group that edit belonged to. It originally showed as being a member of the group "user". I changed its group to "root". I also tried "admin", tried putting it back, changed the primary group a dozen times. But no matter what I'm doing now, it won't let me access the CDROM. I am pretty sure that I have successfully moved the user account to the root group since I now have no restrictions about writing directories and files (just as a test) into the /root, (et.al) directory. So that's my story. Believe it, or else. :-) ht {{ BEGIN ORIGINAL MESSAGE }} SUBJECT >Re: root, superusers, and mounting... This class covers command line bash commands. No real linux administration was discussed. If you are good setting up scripts then you could skip the class. I had only rudimentary script experience ( half deciphering How To's ). This class add a great deal to my vocabulary. For my brother, who has experience with bash said the class filled in a lot of holes in his self taught training. I don't know if this helps too much - the class costing what it does - but I found the class very stimulating and worth it. I am still NO bash expert or even that competent, but I do understand a lot more code when I see it and can travel around and manipulate the system better. If I understand you correctly, you took an existing account and named it "root." If so, you could be logging in with the new "root" and not the true root account. The system creates root by default, so you don't need to create one. This might explain the error. Also, superuser is not a user per se'. The su command will allow any old user to switch to root, or any other user on the system provided you know their password. For instance from a prompt: $ su You would be prompted for root's password. $ su joe You would be prompted for joe's password. I'm not sure how you could have created a second root and the primary root not answer the login, but that's my guess. Perhaps someone can address this further. <> On Mon, 2003-02-10 at 18:10, Tass wrote: > Greetings. > > New to the list, new to Red Hat (8.0), long time W2k IT. > > I'll try not to inundate with every little question that pops up. custom kernel on multiple machines
Hi, I have a custom kernel which I have slightly modified the source for. I'm running the kernel on multiple machines. I'm trying to come up with a smooth system for keeping the kernels up to date across multiple machines without killing the changes I've made. up2date won't work for me because as I understand it getting the kernel-src package will wipe out my changes. Has anyone else come across this problem? Any suggestions? root, superusers, and mounting...
Greetings. New to the list, new to Red Hat (8.0), long time W2k IT. I'll try not to inundate with every little question that pops up. But I've found the first question that I can't locate the answer to on my own, so your help would be appreciated. In order to have greater access while learning the innards of Linux, I changed my User account from it's default to ROOT. (I know, don't run your system as root. But this is just a "learning" system and I plan on screwing it up many times before I even build another box for any really important work.) I just wanted to be able to get everywhere without having to log out/in all of the time. Well, I have no idea how much damage I've caused with this, but the first thing I've encountered is that now I can't access the CDROM. Error message says: "Could not mount device .must be superuser to use mount." I don't see any "superuser" in the groups. And I thought that as "Root" it would be complete and unrestricted access just as it is for "Administrator" in W2k. So any ideas why I can't open the CD? Or any feedback as to this "superuser" issue? Re: Deleting a file
there's couple ways. first remember that you can surround any argument with " " or ' ' to keep the shell from interpreting it as a command (or in this case a comment) so you could use "rm" to blow away a wierd file like so: $ rm '' if you don't like the quoting thing, there's always escaping individual characters with "\" like this: $ rm your\ mother\ was\ a\ hamster.txt (i love monty python) using either of the above methods you should be able to kill any file that you can type: $ rm \#filename\# or $ rm '#filename' have fun On February 10, 2003 02:54 pm, Ted Gervais wrote: > Was wondering something here. Deleting a file
Was wondering something here. Now and than I end up with a file that has '#' in front and back of it. ie: #filename#. No doubt that is caused by using MC and while MC can delete these files how does one do it from the command line?I have often tried to try a few approaches to removing them 'rm #* or rm *# and can't seem to delete them. Re: problem with USB keyboard on RH8.0
Maybe it's a motherboard/chipset issue? I've run across a problem in the server environment where the Ca810e motherboard simply will not allow Linux (with kernels from RedHat releases newer than 7.2) to continue past the kernel APM loading phase if a keyboard is not attached (even if the BIOS says to ignore keyboard errors). We either turn off APM completely via custom kernel, or attach a fake keyboard to the server. The point is, it could be something Linux isn't handling correctly for the given chipset used on your motherboard. If you have access to another system with different hardware, try installing/using your keyboard with that one. It's a hassle, but that's how we figure out where the real culprit is sometimes. :) Aleem Sunderji wrote: oops...re-posted with the correct date... i am having problems with a usb keyboard (microsoft natural keyboard elite). on boot, the keyboard works fine (usb support is enabled in the BIOS), and i can use the keyboard to select the boot image in GRUB. when the USB subsystem comes up in linux, the keyboard dies (i.e. pressing the keys has no effect, and the capslock/numlock/scrolllock keys do not activate the LEDs). other USB devices work fine though (wacom graphire tablet, hauppauge radio tuner, yamaha cd writer). a ps/2 keyboard attached to the system must be used to control the system. dmesg contains the following message: hiddev0: USB HID v1.10 Keyboard [045e:000b] on USB2:11.0 lsmod shows that the following modules are loaded: mousedev 5524 0 (unused) evdev 5742 0 (unused) wacom 7988 0 (unused) keybdev2976 0 (unused) input 5920 0 [mousedev evdev wacom keybdev] hid 11796 0 (unused) usb-uhci 26168 0 (unused) usbcore 77024 1 [wacom hid usbvision usb-uhci] the system hardware browser in GNOME shows the keyboard listed, so it seems that the system is aware of its presence. i am using the keyboard with a KVM switch (which is why the keyboard is listed as device #11 -- every time i switch consoles, linux detects a device disconnect and reconnect, incrementing the device number assigned). however, i have tried connecting the keyboard directly to the machine, and the problem is the same. the keyboard does not work in console mode OR in X. i have tested it with other machines (win2000 and winXP) and it works fine. configuration: rh8.0 (2.4.18-14) on a dell dimension 2300 dual-boot with windows XP 128MB RAM, 30GB HD any assistance is much appreciated... aleem. __ Do You Yahoo!?
