RE: Hardware help needed...
2. While there appears to be a Pilot/Handspring utility. I can not get the RH8 to recognize the Handspring at all. I've tried to reboot with the cradle attached as well as with the configuration utility. One thing I've noticed is there is no device for the handspring. Neither a /dev/pilot or /dev/visor. create a symbolic link to the device that your handspring is using. To find this device, hit the hotsync button on your cradle, the run 'dmesg' as root. this will tell you where it is appearing (most likely /dev/usb/ttyUSB1). ln -s /dev/usb/ttyUSB1 /dev/pilot. As root, change the permissions on whaterver the /dev/pilot device was linked to: chown 'user' /dev/usb/ttyUSB1 chgrp 'group' /dev/usb/ttyUSB1 chmod ug+rw /dev/usb/ttyUSB1 With 'pilot-xfer' and 'J-Pilot' start the HotSync from your PDA before engaging the application's sync features. (/dev/pilot needs to be active). With evolution/gpilotd, this is not necessary. To set up your conduits (addressbook, notes, blah, blah) run: gpilotd-control-applet --cap-id=1 4. The NVidia GForce 4 video card does not allow for hardware acceleration, while I've not found any hardware compatibility specs for the model of laptop I have, the 8100 states that you should not turn it on. By what is the nv driver? Nvidia? The install set mine to vesa. Head over to www.nvidia.com and download the RH8.0 rpm. This will give you the module needed for your card with acceleration. The module is not included in RH8 since it is closed source/proprietary code. RE: Lynksys PCMCIA support ?
Try grabbing RedHat 8.0 (purchase or download and burn) if you can, otherwise, install 7.3 with the linksys card plugged in. The installer should detect and install the card for you. I never got into manually installing the card in 7.3. Last time I did that was when I was using Mandrake 6 and I used the wvlan_ng program. 8.0 will allow you add the card through the program 'neat'. To answer your two questions at the end of your response: (null) was the beta version for the new RedHat 8.0 Psyche The Prism2 module is the driver that linux uses to drive the linksys PCMCIA WPC11 card (which I'm guessing you are using, check the model number on the card). However, I seem to recall during the installation on Windows, it asked for my account and registration to install and work. How does this work on Linux? Do I just set eth0 to DHCP and assume it'll work when I boot the system up? Any caveats I need to be aware of? I'm currently connected up with RedHat 7.3 on my firewall. But I'm using a Toshiba PCX1100U cable modem. All I had to do is give the installer the MAC address of my ethernet card and the MAC address of my cable modem. When he arrived to install it and the digital cable TV converter, he looked at my systems and asked what is it running, Linux? When I said yes, he said I don't think we support Linux. I told him, That's right, you just support providing me with a broadband interface. I support Linux. I gave him the numbers and he called them in. He needed an account name, but that was only for the E-Mail address, it had nothing to do with getting the broadband interface to work. When he said it was ready, I ifup'ed the interface and a couple seconds later was pleased to see obtaining information for eth0 followed by [OK]. If so I it is more than likely running into the same problem IE has with ftp.redhat.com in that the ftp server is rejecting the anonymous password that IE passes which is IEUser which is rejected by the ftp server due to the fact it is not formated as an email address??? Netscape formats a fake email address off the bat to get around this. So how is this actually an IE issue? I see this as an ftp server issue. wu-ftpd has specific ftpaccess commands to deal with this issue (man ftpaccess, look for passwd-check). Exactly my point my friend. To blame all of our problems on MS or close our webpages to browsers we do not like is more detramental to the open source community, or any business for that matter, than good. RedHat was quick to point out in an article the fact Netscape and other browsers could not open msn.com although this was an intentional move on Microsofts part I feel that not fixing an unintentional problem once it is found out is just as bad. Fact: The most widely used browser on the market today is IE, Even if this was gained through shady business practices we still as web developers must remeber this and make sure we are not doing away with over half of the possible clients on the Internet due to not wanting to cater to an Evil Empire as some would say. I still say this IS NOT an IE problem but a server side or for that matter a web developer problem. Simply put if your going to offer a service, especially one for a fee, over the web you should make sure it is accessable to the vast majority of users and face it folks netscape and mozilla do not have near the base IE does. Plain and simple telling someone to change browsers if a site don't work is not a solution on the Internet. Designing your site to cater to at least the major browsers is the responsibility of the web developer. ___ Redhat-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list ___ Redhat-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list ___ Redhat-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list

RE: Fixed it... New issues
This is normal for Gnome, I get it all the time. On my system I just set up a hostname (it doesn't bother the cable modem) and added the host name to my 127.0.0.1 line in the /etc/hosts. so you'll have something like 127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain mypc -Original Message-From: Dean MacIsaac Jr. [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]Sent: Wednesday, February 13, 2002 8:54 AMTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: Fixed it... Evolution download
Does anyone know of a site where evolution can be downloaded where the dependencies are in the same directory? I would like to just run a rpm -Uvh ftp://ftp.x.com/rh7.2/i686/evolution.xxx.xxx.rpm (or whatever site and directory structure it is) and have the dependencies resolved by RPM instead of downloading and installing, one by one, the dependencies depencencies dependcies. The mknod command creates device special files, or fifos. Normally the shell script /dev/MAKEDEV is used to create special files for commonly known devices; it executes mknod with the appropriate arguments and can make all the files required for the device. To make nodes manually, the required arguments are: name Device name, for example ``sd'' for a SCSI disk on an HP300 or a ``pty'' for pseudo-devices. b | c | p Type of device. If the device is a block type device such as a tape or disk drive which needs both cooked and raw special files, the type is b. All other devices are character type devices, such as terminal and pseudo devices, and are type c. Specifying p creates fifo files. major The major device number is an integer number which tells the ker- nel which device driver entry point to use.
