Subject: Mozilla java plugin

hello,

I have just rebuild mozilla 1.1 and installed it. it works fine apart
from its refusing to recognise my java plugin. I symlinked libjavaplugin
to the mozilla plugings directory but it refuses to recognise its there
at all. I double checked the symlink and it is pointing to the right
place. also, other plugins i have added to the plugin dir are working
fine, like shockwave and flash. This has worked for me with all versions
of mozilla apart from this troublesome 1.1 release. If any of you out
there have upgraded to 1.1 and have this problem please let me know how
you fixed it.

thanks,
Adam

RE: Hardware help needed...

2002-11-21 Thread Carter, Shaun G
   2. While there appears to be a Pilot/Handspring utility. I can not
get the
RH8 to recognize the Handspring at all. I've tried to reboot with the
cradle
attached as well as with the configuration utility. One thing I've noticed
is
there is no device for the handspring. Neither a /dev/pilot or /dev/visor.

create a symbolic link to the device that your handspring is using. To find
this device, hit the hotsync button on your cradle, the run 'dmesg' as root.
this will tell you where it is appearing (most likely /dev/usb/ttyUSB1).

ln -s /dev/usb/ttyUSB1 /dev/pilot.

As root, change the permissions on whaterver the /dev/pilot device was
linked to:

chown 'user' /dev/usb/ttyUSB1
chgrp 'group' /dev/usb/ttyUSB1
chmod ug+rw /dev/usb/ttyUSB1

With 'pilot-xfer' and 'J-Pilot' start the HotSync from your PDA before
engaging the application's sync features. (/dev/pilot needs to be active).
With evolution/gpilotd, this is not necessary.

To set up your conduits (addressbook, notes, blah, blah) run:

gpilotd-control-applet --cap-id=1

   4. The NVidia GForce 4 video card does not allow for hardware
acceleration,
while I've not found any hardware compatibility specs for the model of
laptop
I have, the 8100 states that you should not turn it on. By what is the nv
driver? Nvidia? The install set mine to vesa.

Head over to www.nvidia.com and download the RH8.0 rpm. This will give you
the module needed for your card with acceleration. The module is not
included in RH8 since it is closed source/proprietary code.

But I guess all good multimedia support was taken out?
Anyhow, I can't seem to get MPEG video to play either

2002-11-13 Thread Carter, Shaun G
oops forgot to mention the symlinking and all the good stuff. do this
before you set up the conduits if it's not already too late.

# Find your port by hitting the HotSync button on your cradle and then
checking 'dmesg' output.
# Create the '/dev/pilot' device:
  serial: ln -s /dev/ttyS# /dev/pilot
  usb: ln -s /dev/usb/ttyUSB# /dev/pilot
# As root, change the permissions to whatever device you linked /dev/pilot
to in the last step:
  chown 'user' /dev/?
  chgrp 'group' /dev/?
  chmod ug+rw /dev/?
# With 'pilot-xfer' and 'J-Pilot' start the HotSync from your PDA before
engaging the application's sync features. (/dev/pilot needs to be active).
With gpilotd (used with evolution) you can just hit the sync button.

Yes, I know this is off-topic but I cannot find any information on this
anywhere and I'm hoping someone here has dealt with this issue.

I have an SMC Wireless Access Point (802.11b) connected to a hub in my
basement. It functions as a dumb bridge, allowing my wireless laptops to
connect to my physical LAN. The problem is that the wireless coverage in
portions of my home is spotty.

Is there anything that can be done, short of physcially moving my Access
Point (it must remain in proximity to the hub), to increase or boost the
coverage? Can the antenna be replaced somehow with something better? Can
the antenna be remotely located from the Access Point through some kind of
long antenna wire? Can the signal be boosted somehow?

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

TIA!

the palm is easy if it's a palm or handspring. Just hit the hotsync button
on the cradle then run the command dmesg to see which USB port it's using.
The dev's that you're looking for are under /dev/usb/ttyUSB#. All three
palm/handsprings that I've set up have been using /dev/usb/ttyUSB1 which I
ln -s 'd to /dev/pilot.

Howdy,
I just bought a Linksys WPC11 ver 3 PCMCIA wireless card for my laptop
running RedHat 8.0. I downloaded the driver from linksys and followed the
steps to the letter from the README but to no avail. I plug the card in and
nothing happens.

Here's my information:

kernel source: linux 2.4.18-17.8.0
pcmcia: pcmca-cs-3.1.31
driver: linux-wlan-ng-0.1.14-pre (configured and built with against the
above sources) - lots of warnings but no errors
configured /etc/pcmcia/wlan-ng.opts for SID information
configured /etc/pcmcia/network.opts to use DHCP
restarted pcmcia service
plugged card in.

Has anyone successfully got a Linksys wireless card working with RH 8.0? If
not, what cards would wireless users recommend?

Thanks,

After a bit of mucking about, I got my Palm m515 configured on RH8 using
the Handspring USB stuff. Now that this much works, my question is:
how do I configure RH8 to sync my Palm with Evolution? All I find in
the Pilot/Handspring Tool are options to Use conduit settings,
synchronize, copy to palm, copy from palm etc. All of these
settings seem to apply to the copy in the Local basedir. How do I set
it up to sync with Evo? Nowhere can I find any mention of EAddress or
similar. Where o Where are the good ol' fashioned conduit settings?

Thanks!

RE: redhat 8.0 and video palyers

2002-10-07 Thread Carter, Shaun G

For some reason RedHat decided to remove ALL video players from RH,
effectively crippling multimedia on the system (referring to MP3 support
also which was also, understandably, removed). Head over to
http://freshrpms.net and grab ogle or xine to play regular mpegs. I think
ogle also has the capability to do divx, if not, go grab the divx codec from
www.divx.com

RE: RH8 mpg's

This would indicate MP3 audio layer support was removed. I know this and
they had announced it, for understandable reasons. Now explain why the
video players have been removed (.avi, .mpg, .mpeg), these have nothing
to do with MP3.

I wouldn't say the reason hasn't been announced. Read the release notes.

$ grep -A4 patent /usr/share/doc/redhat-release-8.0/RELEASE-NOTES-i386

o Due to patent licensing, and conflicts between such patent licenses
and the licenses of application source code, MPEG-1/2 audio layer 3
(mp3) support has been removed from applications in Red Hat Linux such
as XMMS and noatun. Red Hat suggests the use of Ogg Vorbis(TM), an
open, non-proprietary, patent-and-royalty-free compressed audio
format.

RE: Lynksys PCMCIA support ?

2002-10-02 Thread Carter, Shaun G

Try grabbing RedHat 8.0 (purchase or download and burn) if you can,
otherwise, install 7.3 with the linksys card plugged in. The installer
should detect and install the card for you. I never got into manually
installing the card in 7.3. Last time I did that was when I was using
Mandrake 6 and I used the wvlan_ng program. 8.0 will allow you add the card
through the program 'neat'.

To answer your two questions at the end of your response:

(null) was the beta version for the new RedHat 8.0 Psyche

The Prism2 module is the driver that linux uses to drive the linksys
PCMCIA WPC11 card (which I'm guessing you are using, check the model number
on the card). I have also heard of problems with v.3 of this card. Is this
the card you are using?

The linksys card uses the prism2 module. I did notice, however that the

All of the installs I did for 7.3 though, detected and installed my card

Just recently installed 7.3 on my Toshiba Satellite 4015CDT
with only a bit more difficulty that Suse Linux 8.0.

One glaring difference is that RH does not seem to support any hardware
from Linksys (i.e. Pcmcia Ethercard).

Do I have to buy a new card just because of RH ?
Everyone,:-) else supports this vendor.
Is there not some way of trying to use this card ?

The pcmcia services are running OK.

Mount your windows partition and it will be accessible. Most folks would
probably recommend creating a directory under /mnt, like /mnt/windows.
Then, assuming your windows partition is /dev/hda1 the command would be:
(as root)

mount /dev/hda1 -t vfat /mnt/windows

Try it that way first, and if it works you can edit /etc/fstab to make it
permanent.

Hope that helped.

prism2_cs works also, that's what I'm using. As a side note, since 7.2 (I
think, could have been 7.1) the install configures this card automagically
(I use the same card, beware of lockups though, if you lock up, eject and
reseat the card). I don't think the new Neat (7.3 and higher) has wireless
config options. I've been looking for them ever since so I can configure
the wireless AND cabled nics. Hopefully someone from redhat will respond as

Yeah maybe, but this one is also not in neat's adapters list.

Furthermore, is there a specific wireless configuration gui
(e.g., to set the ESSID, etc)?

Run
"neat" to add the network interface. You do not need to add a netmask or

I'm currently connected up with RedHat 7.3 on my firewall.
But I'm using a Toshiba PCX1100U cable modem.

All I had to do is give the installer the MAC address of my
ethernet card and the MAC address of my cable modem. When he arrived
to install it and the digital cable TV converter, he looked at my

said I don't think we support Linux. I told him, That's right, you
just support providing me with a broadband interface. I support Linux.
I gave him the numbers and he called them in. He needed an account name,
but that was only for the E-Mail address, it had nothing to do with getting
the broadband interface to work. When he said it was ready, I ifup'ed
the interface and a couple seconds later was pleased to see obtaining

I guess one thing that may be a benefit is that the newer motherboards are

to a ftp server at rhn.redhat.com and ftp all of Redhat's software.

but could it be that after following the link to download the ISO
that it is then being redirected to an ftp site uses as does the
normal public ftp.redhat.com email for a password anonymous ftp
access??? If so I it is more than likely running into the same
problem IE has with ftp.redhat.com in that the ftp server is
rejecting the anonymous password that IE passes which is IEUser
which is rejected by the ftp server due to the fact it is not
formated as an email address??? Netscape formats a fake email
address off the bat to get around this.

So how is this actually an IE issue? I see this as an ftp server
issue. wu-ftpd has specific ftpaccess commands to deal with this
issue (man ftpaccess, look for passwd-check).

Exactly my point my friend. To blame all of our problems on MS or close
our webpages to browsers we do not like is more detramental to the open
source community, or any business for that matter, than good.

RedHat was quick to point out in an article the fact Netscape and other
browsers could not open msn.com although this was an intentional move on
Microsofts part I feel that not fixing an unintentional problem once it is
found out is just as bad.

Fact: The most widely used browser on the market today is IE, Even if this
was gained through shady business practices we still as web developers
must remeber this and make sure we are not doing away with over half of
the possible clients on the Internet due to not wanting to cater to
an Evil Empire as some would say.

I still say this IS NOT an IE problem but a server side or for that matter
a web developer problem. Simply put if your going to offer a service,
especially one for a fee, over the web you should make sure it is
accessable to the vast majority of users and face it folks netscape and
mozilla do not have near the base IE does.

Plain and simple telling someone to change browsers if a site don't work
is not a solution on the Internet. Designing your site to cater to at
least the major browsers is the responsibility of the web developer.

go into XF86Config-4 and make sure the device is set to use the r128
chipset. Did the install detect the card? Normally the r128 works with the
SVGA package that comes with XFree86. I'm guessing you see the BIOS boot
sequence til linux boots, then when it switches to runlevel 5 it blanks out?
try booting in runlevel 3 and running startx, see what that tells you.

RE: Can't see DVD drive

best idea to resolve the /dev/dvd problem is to

ln -s /dev/cdrom /dev/dvd

or is that backwards? don't remember and, unfortunately, don't have access

  I have a new question. A while back, I
installed redhat 6.2 on an old hp, worked fine. Now my child needs a PC,
and it too will be dual boot. How do I get the drive back so MS can
recognize it? MS FDISK gives me 2 drives,

  1. 16 mb primary DOS
  2. 2 GB extended DOS

I can't delete the extended drive, because it has
logical drives set up, when I go to delete logical drives, there aren't any to
  delete.
So as far as MS is concerned, I have 1 16 mb
  drive I can work with.

  HELP!!!

I am currently running an ATI Rage Fury card that uses the same r128 chipset
as the ATI Rage Pro. It runs great in linux.

Subject: Video card choice

Hi,

I am looking at used video card. If I don't buy a used video
card, I will be installing a S3 Trio64v/+ 2Mb that I have on a P4
1.6gig and 256 ram ...

The choices are:

ATI Rage Pro 3D 8Mb : 19.00 USD
Diamond 3D TNT 16Mb : 19.00 USD
Nvidia 3D Vanta 8Mb : 25.00 USD
Matrox G200 16Mb AGP : 32.00 USD
Voodoo3 2000 16Mb AGP: 32.00 USD
3Dfx Voodoo3 3000 16Mb AGP : 35.00 USD
Matrox G400 16Mb : 38.00 USD
Diamond Stealth S540 (32mb ? ) : 38.00 USD

Some questions, the compatibility hardware list differs amongst
RH7.2 list and Mandrake8.1. Can I trust when they disagree that
it works? For example, in the case of the ATI Rage 128 Pro, Mdk
says it is compatible while RH says it is not.

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with hardware brand
reliability/quality/prices to determine what constitute a deal.
Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

This is most likely in response to the letter from Red Hat advising that

As someone bought an unofficial version of RH7.2 from cheapbytes?
I have not seen it explicitly on their listing. What I have seen
is:

Cheapbytes Linux x86 CPU Version 7.2 CD set:

which points to

Catalog No.: 0070010722
Publisher: CheapBytes
CheapBytes Linux x86 CPU Version 7.2 CD Set
Our Price: $7.99
The media format of this product is that of a quality
replicated CD.

Includes:

Included with this CD-ROM set is the following:

x86 CPU Installation CD #1 Containing Version 7.2 of
XXX XXX
x86 CPU Installation CD #2 Containing Version 7.2 of
XXX XXX
Source CD #1 Containing Version 7.2 of XXX XXX
Source CD #2 Containing Version 7.2 of XXX XXX
Documentatin CD Containing Version 7.2 of XXX XXX

It looks to me that there is an error and that would be the
unofficial version of RH7.2.

Any Idea?

RE: command

2001-12-12 Thread Carter, Shaun G

The mknod command creates device special files, or fifos.
Normally the shell script /dev/MAKEDEV is
used to create special files for commonly known
devices; it executes mknod with the appropriate arguments and
can make all the files required for the
device. To make nodes manually, the required
arguments are: name

the type is b. All other devices are character type

Specifying

I could have done that, but I remember what it's like to now know about
something or where to look. I would much rather be helpful than cynical.
However, RTFM is very helpful advice in most cases, helps ya learn as you

Honestly, was it necessary to post that? You could have said something
