Might be! Try to remove the "-f-" and see if it works. Just to check, in
my ~/.procmailrc, it starts with this:

-
#Preliminaries
SHELL=/bin/sh #Use the Bourne shell (check your path!)
MAILDIR=${HOME}/mail#First check what your mail directory is!
DEFAULT=${HOME}/Mailbox
LOGFILE=${MAILDIR}/procmail.log
LOG="--- Logging ${LOGFILE} for ${LOGNAME}, "

You could try adding the first part plus a simple condition like:

:0 c
* ^Subject: .*test
! [EMAIL PROTECTED]

and end by

-

# Accept all the rest to your default mailbox
:0:
${DEFAULT}

and see if it works. Good luck procmailing! Hope it works for you.

The correct formula in your ~/.forward for using sendmail, to make
procmail work is

---
"|IFS=' ' && exec /usr/bin/procmail || exit 75 #userid"
---

"userid" should be you userid! :-)

Big thanks Michael! Your script is totally cool!!! I managed to rescue
some /var/logs/rpmkgs.3 file!

Then ran your script with the RH Cds and location of some other RPMS that
my friend downloaded and in less than an hour everything was safely
rescued.

Lucky that you wrote such a a script. Out of curiosity, you wrote it just
out of the blue or you wrote it by necessity, i.e Did the disaster happen
to you or any of your clients/friends and thus decided to do something
about it?

Personally I think you should ask RH to include this in their next distro
release. :-) I went on Google and I realized a lot of people make the
mistake of wiping the /var/lib/rpm instead of the __db*!

I also find out that in SUSE Linux there's a time-stamped backups of the
RPM database in /var/adm/backup/rpmdb and that you can just copy it to
/var/lib/rpm, and everything gets back to normal! Anyway thanks a lot!

On way is to use PERL! Since I'm familiar with PERL, I'm gonna give u a
PERL solution:

use this small PERL program and call it comment.pl

#!/usr/bin/perl
open(FILE,"<./myfile.txt") || die "can't open myfile.txt";

$lines=0;

while(){
$lines=$lines+1;
if($lines>=3&&$lines<=4){s/$_/\#$_/;} # this specifies which lines to comment
push(@temp, $_);
 }
close(FILE);

open(FILE2,">./comment.txt") || die "can't open comment.txt"; #the commented file :-)

print FILE2 "@temp";
close(FILE2);
--

ur initial file: myfile.txt
ur commented file: comment.txt

$lines governs which lines you want to comment out. This example shows the
commented line "#something" to be 3rd and 4th line.

Btw here it's commented by a "#".. u can specify other things! Just modify
the above and run it!

when rpm --rebuilddb doesn't work! what next?

2003-09-09 Thread Didier Casse

One of my friends accidentally remove her /var/lib/rpm folder entirely
when she found out that her rpm sucked at some point, instead of simply
removing the /var/lib/rpm/__db*

Now the problem is how to get back this database! rpm --initdb followed by
rpm --rebuilddb doesn't seem to work since rpm -qa is totally blank.

Funny thing is her synaptic/apt still know which packages are
installed. But the rpm thing can't remember anything.

Any idea how to get that whole thing back?

A friend of mine wanted to switch to Linux and was delighted
to hear from me that there's a yahoo messenger for Linux! It's one of her

After installation, we realized that there's no voice chat in Unix Yahoo
messenger! (Later I realized that it's stated on the website that the Unix
version is an experimental version with NO voice chat which we
overlooked.) And I do not know any replacement for it!

Anybody knows a program on Linux that can voice chat with a Windoze Yahoo

If you fixed /etc/hosts, and /etc/resolv.conf then I've no clue! It's
because of problems like this configuration headaches with sendmail that I
decided to switch to qmail! When a friend told me to switch to qmail, I
was very hesitant about it since *everybody* used sendmail but when I
switched I was really happy because it was easy to figure out stuff and it
gives you meaningful error messages which you can easily trace back!

TIP: To speed up things and install qmail rapidly on RH9:

rpm --erase --nodeps sendmail #getting rid of sendmail!

Then go to http://www.itworks.com.hk/services/download.htm

and download the 2 rpms. Install:

rpm -ivh qmail-xxxrh9.rpm
rpm -ivh qmail-initscripts-xxxrh9.rpm

then reboot and voila! Your qmail is ready to rock!

VNC will provide remote access to the GUI for RH9. VNC can also run on
Windows. So you don't have any problems if you want to access your Linux
remotely from a Windows machine.

What's your printer name and model? Your printer is connected to your
Windows machine right? You should be able to print from a Redhat PC
without any problems. Hang on a bit more.

Easier to print without running into trouble! If you want to use the
Windows driver.. configure the driver as raw and the print command

in smb.conf as

---
print command= lpr-cups -P %p -o raw %s
-

->test with:

lpr -P HP_LaserJet -o raw /usr/share/printconf/tests/testpage-a4.ps

Wait a sec! some HP LaserJet are Jet Direct Printers! They use

socket://hostname

instead of smb://username:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/printer . Be careful! Know the
things you're dealing with!

-> Look in your Windows machine in the printer panel and look at the
properties of that printer... It will show you whether it's a Jet Direct
or not. If it's a Jet direct there will be an IP address associated with
it.

-> Give us more details about the model! and the sharename, hostname,
etc... If you give limited details, we can't be of much help

->You might wanna post to http://www.cups.org/newsgroups (cups.general)

There are very helpful guys who are expert in CUPS.

This is rather vague. You should be more specific on the type of spam that

You need to specify the correct driver in Linux too! Take a look at

http://www.linuxprinting.org/printer_list.cgi

and search your printer in the database.

It will also provide you with the recommended drivers and some suggestions
for best performance. Install your new driver (CUPS one) and reinstall
the whole printer from http://localhost:631 and taking note of your new
driver which should appear from the list after installation.

Bandwidth Speed Test for cable and Methods of Increasing your InternetSpeed

2003-08-25 Thread Didier Casse
Hello all,
I've been wondering whether there's a command in Linux to test
the Bandwidth Speed directly. Up to now I've been using the site
www.aspeedtest.com to verify my broadband internet connection speed. I've
seen some scripts in Google but I have seen direct commands for it.

Some software on Windows claim to boost internet speed by 220%!!! Just
wondering whether anybody tried those and whether it is true in the first
place.

Can we boost Internet connection speed in Linux? If the answer is "yes",
then how? Thanks for the help.

Duplexing in CUPS

2003-08-25 Thread Didier Casse
Some guy asked for duplexing a while ago. Can't remember who it was but I
just found in my CUPS docs the way to do it. I had forgotten it so I had
to dig the manual!

-
Advanced print commands - Duplexing

* If your printer supports its, CUPS can do duplexing from the command
line.
* To do duplexing, the command is "lpr -o duplexingoption
filename" where duplexingoption is one of the following.
* "sides=two-sided-short-edge" is the option suitable for landscape
pages.
* "sides=two-sided-long-edge" is the option is suitable for portrait
pages.
* CUPS default is to print on only one side of the paper, so while
there is an option for this ("sides=one-sided"), you don't need it.

If your printer doesn't support duplexing, but you want to fake it, CUPS
again has options to help.

* Use the "-o page-set=set option" to select printing just the even or
just the odd pages.
* The set value is either even, for even numbered pages, or odd, for
odd numbered pages.
* The default is to print all pages. There is really is no option for
this.
---

which might help.

No need to reboot. Do

/sbin/service smb restart

/sbin/service/cupds restart
to reload cups

Try printing with lpr.cups instead of just an lpr and see if that makes a
difference.

If you're using CUPS, try this in your browser:

Re: [PARPORT] cpufreq.c compilation error when recompiling kernel

2003-08-22 Thread Didier Casse
Hi Juan,

Can't solve the problem dude. It's somehow related to the patch I used
which was an incorrect patch. The developer Tim Waugh told it
personnally. I got no problem with NTFS support.

For enabling NTFS in RH9, do not recompile Kernel, instead use the
instructions at:

http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/info/redhat.html

It has some nice rpms and stuff which you can use directly without
having a headache. Hope this helps. And install a new kernel source tree
btw.

RE: How to make bootable cd-rom instead of floppy?

2003-08-21 Thread Didier Casse

>From the RedHat Manual:

--
1.4.2. Making an Installation Boot CD-ROM

isolinux is now used for booting the Red Hat Linux installation CD. To
create your own CD-ROM to boot the installation program, use the following
instructions:

Copy the isolinux/ directory from the first Red Hat Linux CD-ROM into a
temporary directory (referred to here as ) using the
following command:

cp -r /isolinux/

Change directories to the directory you have created:

cd

Make sure the files you have copied have appropriate permissions:

chmod u+w isolinux/*

Finally, issue the following command to create the ISO image file:

mkisofs -o file.iso -b isolinux.bin -c boot.cat -no-emul-boot \
-boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -R -J -v -T isolinux/

Note Note

The above command was split into two lines for printing purposes
only. When you execute this command, be sure to type it as a single
command, all on the same line.

Burn the resulting ISO image (named file.iso and located in
) to a CD-ROM as you normally would.

Outlook can be replaced by Ximian evolution and some nicely configured
pine. Word by LaTeX or if you prefer you can use open office. Same goes
for powerpoint.

If you tell me that you use Codeweaver's wine for Dreamweaver MX, it's ok.
I can understand that. But I simply do not want to pay for it! I would
prefer installing Dreamweaver on a Windows platform. It's my own choice.

Anyway I have all MS products free here in the University. This Uni pays
Microsoft a hell lot of money each year to have their products. The whole
computer system is Windoze driven. I'm one of the odd ones using Linux.

So in my case it makes no sense paying for a codeweavers plugin. But I do
like "wine". Simply because a lot of people have put some effort in it and
they're willing to give the source code away! That's a nice spirit.

Which is not the same thing for Codeweavers!

I like things/software made freely and for others to benefit
from. Ok? Can't help it if you disagree with
that!

I like when it's a sharing environment and we all contribute towards
something.

I never disagreed with that. I have no choice too when I have to run
AutoCAD. The functions I used in AutoCAD, well there are no substitutes in
Linux. You can tell me why I don't use VariCAD, LinuxCAD, QCAD or whatever
CAD. I've used them all but the functions I used, well only AutoCAD rocks!
I'm forced to use it on Windows.

Codeweavers plugin do not run AutoCAD 2002/3 also btw.

If a Windows emulator is free i would like to have it. Like "wine", I've
the latest rpm on my box! If it's not free,
then I might as well buy Wind

whatever!?!?! If you can be so aggressive on a mailing list then in the

Paying for good quality software on Linux

Yeah I would like to pay for things like AutoCAD to run on Linux. This is
a software that I consider worthy to pay for. Things like Mathematica or
Maple and things like these on Linux are worthy too. Simply because there
are no better replacement on Linux. At least I haven't seen any.

But codeweavers plugin, NO WAY! Firstly because it's a plain excuse for
running MS products (mainly MS Office!) which I do not like in the first
place. Let's face it, people buy this plugin so that they can use MS Word
and Powerpoint! There are better software out there like I mentionned
earlier. Man if somebody can't get rid of Microsoft, then use Windows.
Dont use Linux and fool try to fool everybody with your MS office programs
running on a Windows emulator!

Up to now, I've use 100% free software on Linux (Even my Linux was given

contributed to code on Linux for various stuff and have offered it FREELY

Paying for that??!?! You're the one who's a total fool. It's ridiculous
having to pay for that. And without adding to the fact that you're paying
MS Office too!!! What the heck are you doing in this redhat list? You're

You're hooked to MS products and your plugin that you bought is another

still really on those weak software.

Codeweavers Crossover Office is NOT free! I'd rather use Outlook on
Windows than pay Codeweavers. I like free software and I don't like to pay
when it comes to Linux stuff. My idea of Linux is that it is free software
developed by the community. Those who make me pay for Linux software

I used Ximian evolution without licenses and it works fine for me!
Another way is to use your pine to access the exchange server. You should
have a line like this

incoming-folders= NUS Exchange {scistu.ex.nus.edu.sg}inbox

in your ~/.pinerc

Well this is for the National University of Singapore Exchange server, you
should substitute your own settings

2003-08-19 Thread Didier Casse

My problem is as follows: I've a zip file like this:
-
Archive: photos.zip
  Length Date TimeName

   79 08-19-03 16:21 Photos/CIMG0394.JPG
   770011 08-19-03 16:21 Photos/CIMG0395.JPG
   857205 08-19-03 16:21 Photos/CIMG0396.JPG
   180574 08-19-03 16:21 Photos/SleepingPups.jpg
    ---
  2574459 4 files
--
but I want to extract the JPG files only without extracting the Photos
directory with it. Anybody knows the command with unzip?

And suppose that I have more complex directories like

Photos/myphotos/whatever/pics/here/MYFILE.JPG

in the zip file, and I wish to extract ONLY the MYFILE.JPG in the current
directory. What do I do? Thanks.

A simple:

---
FileB >> FileA

would do at the command prompt. If you want advanced stuff, use PERL todo
the job.

PERL 5.88 doesn't run on RH 8 gui... runs only on non-gui mode

2003-08-04 Thread Didier Casse
A friend showed me a weird problem yesterday. Perl programs did not run on
his RH8 box gui (Gnome, Enlightenment, TWM) on
Eterm/Xterm/Gnome-terminal alike but when we switched by
pressing Ctrl+F1 (non-gui mode), PERL programs worked flawlessly! Any idea
what the problem could be. It's the first time that I encounter such weird
behavior!

Yeah it's possible. First make sure you have the correct drivers on your
Linux box.

My feeling is that you're having some problems with your Samba
configuration if it tells you "retry in 15 seconds" over a network.
Check your /etc/samba/smb.conf and make sure it's correct. Issue the
command "testparm" and see if you have no errors!

If you can't solve your problem, post your problem on www.cups.org general
newsgroups. Here is not the right place for CUPS prolems. :-) You'll get
an answer much faster if you post on the CUPS newsgroup.

How to install a parallel port scanner in Linux?

2003-07-14 Thread Didier Casse
Hi,
I just received a mail from developers telling me that the
linux-ppscsi patch for parport is no longer supported. Now I just wanted
to know if you have a Redhat 9 system, then how do you make your system
detect that there is a parallel port scanner.

PS: Please refrain from telling me to use sane-detect-scanner or xsane
since they do not currently support parrallel port scanners. I've tried
these options and they do not work because the ppscsi modules and the epst
module are not loaded.

Any advice please?

Hi there,
 I tried to patch my Linux kernel 2.4.20-8 i686 i386 GNU/Linux (on

step 1. patch -p1 < linux.ppscsi.patch
step 2. make menuconfig to ensure SCSI suppoer and parallel port support
step 3. make dep
step 4. make bzImage
step 5. make modules

then error occures at step 5 as shown below:

adding modules w/o kernel recompilation to add parallel port scanner

2003-07-11 Thread Didier Casse
I wanted to add the ppscsi and epst module to my kernel so that I can hook
up my parallel port scanner to it. But when I tried to compile my kernel I
got some problems (the previous mail on the mailing list). I was wondering
whether there's some ways to add those 2 modules so that I don't have
to do any recompilation of kernel. Recompiling kernel is troublesome and
dangerous!

Anybody had a parallel port scanner before and managed to make
xsane recognize it without any kernel recompilation?

I don't have a permanent IP and I'm on a LAN not set by me!. When I send

I know what you mean. I tried the key alt + Fn +F10 keys something to
switch display and it didn't work. There are some other software settings:
I've dual boot Windows XP so and I had to modify some settings and enable
display on tv through the control panel to get some display on my tv. But

Use Enlightenment desktop (www.enlightenment.org) instead of KDE or GNOME.
The other desktops simply suck and I agree are slower than windows XP!

I use version 1.2 and 1.4 and it makes no difference. The buttons are
still unresolved and flat with a dumb squarish look. Whereas on Windows
the buttons are nice high resolution 3D buttons.

Mozilla ugly radio buttons/widgets

2003-06-14 Thread Didier Casse

When I browse the web with Mozilla on Linux... All the radio buttons,
check buttons, form buttons/search buttons on the web look horrible when
compared to Windows environment. If I browse with opera then these buttons
look nice.

Does anybody know how to make these buttons look nice on Mozilla? I heard
there's something called widget which we have to modify but I've no clue
how. Anybody can enlighten me on this?

Nope it's not included but you can obtain a good wine rpm for redhat 9 at:

It's a newly built rpm package and it's working nicely. :-)

Re: Error With Mplayer

2003-06-03 Thread Didier Casse

download apt from http://apt.freshrpms.net

then install apt. After that type at command prompt as root

[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]$ apt-get update
[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]$ apt-get install mplayer

Apt satisfies dependencies and you'll get rid of all the error messages

don't forget to remove your old mplayer lurking around.

Cheers,

Re: php + mysql integration failed!!

2003-06-01 Thread Didier Casse
download apt from http://apt.freshrpms.net and install it.

remove the old mysql

rpm -e --nodeps mysql
rpm -e --nodeps php
rpm -e --nodeps php-mysql

and so on remove whatever you want!:-)

and then install the new ones by running

apt-get update
apt-get install mysql
apt-get install php
apt-get install php-mysql

and so on. Apt satisfies dependencies. You don't have to worry about them.

you might want to change your sources.list to point to redhat 9 packages
(which is far more updated) in /etc/apt/sources.list

i.e.

rpm http://ayo.freshrpms.net redhat/9/i386 os updates freshrpms
rpm-src http://ayo.freshrpms.net redhat/9/i386 os updates freshrpms

mozilla ugly buttons

2003-05-29 Thread Didier Casse
Hi,
In Windows or Mac, radio buttons, form buttons viewed in a mozilla
browser are beautiful. But in Linux, those buttons when viewed with
mozilla are horrible! Does anybody know how to render those buttons
beautiful in mozilla? Does it have to do with some mozilla internal
themes?

regards,
Didier.
