Sounds like your default shell is something like csh or tcsh.

You should make sure the first line of your script is something like...

#!/bin/sh

Sorry, I answered the "general" question about a check/repair utility.

The answer is, I don't know. But, if you give me a day (or so) I can
put my old SCSI disk from my Solaris (SPARC) on my RH 8 system and give
it a try.

I've not tried it...but mount has UFS as one of its options so if UFS
support is built into the kernel then yes

Hummm I hate it when I rely on the "help" and don't look in the
code

Looking in the code for the e1000 module we find

e1000_main.c: * o Feature: Added support for 82541 and 82547 hardware.

and specific mention of

e1000_hw.c:case E1000_DEV_ID_82547EI:

So, it is not clear why you're system isn't detecting it

Have you tried "modprobe e1000"?

I checked the MSI website and the product specs for your board.

According to
http://www.msicomputer.com/product/detail_spec/product_detail.asp?model=875P_NEO-FIS2R

You have...

• Intel 82547EI (CSA Interface Gigabit LAN)

Thenlooking at the "help" in the kernel configuration we find

CONFIG_E1000:

This driver supports Intel(R) PRO/1000 gigabit ethernet family of
adapters, which includes:

   Controller Adapter Name Board IDs
   -- -
   82542 PRO/1000 Gigabit Server Adapter 700262-xxx,
717037-xxx
   82543 PRO/1000 F Server Adapter738640-xxx,
A3-xxx
   82543 PRO/1000 T Server AdapterA19845-xxx,
A33948-xxx
   82544 PRO/1000 XT Server Adapter A51580-xxx
   82544 PRO/1000 XF Server Adapter A50484-xxx
   82544 PRO/1000 T Desktop Adapter A62947-xxx
   82540 PRO/1000 MT Desktop Adapter A78408-xxx
   82545 PRO/1000 MT Server Adapter A92165-xxx
82546 PRO/1000 MT Dual Port Server Adapter A92111-xxx
   82545 PRO/1000 MF Server Adapter A91622-xxx
   82545 PRO/1000 MF Server Adapter(LX) A91624-xxx
82546 PRO/1000 MF Dual Port Server Adapter A91620-xxx

So, it appears your chip is not supported in the current kernel

Could you supply more details on the ethernet chipset on your
motherboard?

My system is working fine with the following

Ethernet controller: Intel Corp. 82540EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller
(rev 02)

using the e1000 driver with RH9.

Above you say "switch knob". Does this mean you have one of those
mechanical switches as opposed to an electrical KVM switch? If so, I'm
surprised it worked on RH8.

I had one of those a while back on a Linux/Windows setup and it was a
50/50 chance of it working after the switch. The way to get it working
is to logout (if you can) which will cause the X-server to restart and
bring back your mouse. Or if you can't logout then "ctrl-alt-bkspace"
to kill the X-server.

Bottom line. Get a real KVM switch

Ed

For reference I've attached my XF86Config file below Ignore the

IMHO, there is much too Red Hat bashing going on this list. Isn't it
time to get back to "technical" matters with definite (mostly) answers?
All of these emails reminded me of a Clint Eastwood movie that was on a

On the HD Settings tab

There should be a box labeled "Path:". You put the directory path you
wish to use there and then you click the Add button.

If you don't see the "Path:" box it is possible the X-CDroast window
needs to be resized.

AhhhI don't think I am wrongat least not when one looks at the
scope of the original question being asked.

Yes, you can boot the "real" disks with "raw disks". However, the
question was using the "Geforce" video directly.

I do not believe that is supported and based on this paragraph in the
link you suggest...

The issues arise because the virtual hardware that the operating system
sees when it is running in a virtual machine is different from the
physical hardware it sees when it is running directly on the host
computer. It is as if you were removing the boot drive from one physical
computer and running the operating system installed there in a second
computer with a different motherboard, video card and other peripherals
- then moving it back and forth between the two systems.

That iswhen you run it in "real" mode you get the "real" video and
driver. But, if you boot even with the "real" raw disks you get the
VMware Video driver

I believe your English was very clear in the first place.

What you want is to

A. Boot your system into Linux.

B. Start VMware

C. Have VMWare boot the "real" installation of XP and use the Video
Hardware directly.

Step C is not possible. That is outside of the abilities of VMware.

You can't do what you want. VMware is designed in such a way that it
uses its own set of virtual drivers for Video.

Sureyou have set up a dual boot environment.

Forget about what you have done in installing XP in /dev/hda1. VMWware
doesn't look there as it creates its own set of "virtual disks".

What you want to do is follow the documentation for VMware.

Basically

1. Boot RH 9.
2. Install VMware from the RPM's.
3. Run the VMware configuration util.
4. Put your XP CD in your CD drive.
4. Start VMware.
5. VMware will (after you install your license I think) prompt you to
create a new virtual machine.
6. Follow the prompts and install XP from there

Hi

What SATA controller do you have? I'm looking to build a system that
has a Silicon Image controller and found the following on their web
site. It may apply in your case as well

If you have a Redhat 8.0 CD, when installing the OS on a SATA drive
there is an important detail: The PCI scan order must be reversed if
there are IDE devices on the motherboard.

·At boot time

o Boot: Linux ide=reverse

o at booting time this will assure the SATA drive becomes the
target drive.

·At bootstrap configuration time

o add ide=reverse (graphical interface) or

o Insert an append=”ide=reverse” on lilo.conf

·Seagate drives require: (until Seagate fix is done)

o Boot: Linux ide=reverse ide=nodma

o It automatically reverts to dma after installation

After rereading your previous email and the rest of this email I have a
better understanding of your configuration. While you didn't say it I
think you are running you clients on the same machine as the firewall.

Take a look at your policy file in shorewall. It most likely has a
policy of "fw loc ACCEPT". This takes care of all client needs.

Since you are talking about managing your iptables configuration via
shorewall you should probably ask your question on that listbut

Yes, both the samba protocols as well as the NFS protocols require that
a given set of ports be opened on your firewall. The ports in question
are all listed in the shorewall documentation. In what area do you need
clarification?

You seem to be saying that everything is working but you are getting
dropped packet logs. It would probably be helpful if you posted the log
entries.

Or, depending on your support needs, you could also consider their
Enterprise Server 2.1but the cost of that may be more than you care
to part with...

You don't say what version of RH you are running...

Support for accelerated support for Savage4 is via the "savage" driver in
XFree86 4.3.0 . If I'm not mistaken, that only shipped with RH 9.

It could be that you have the incorrect version of the plugin for the
browser that you are using.

I'm using mozilla 1.2.1 and I have in my ~/.mozilla/plugins directory a
link of libjavaplugin_oji.so ->
/usr/java/j2re1.4.2/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so

note the "ns610" v.s. "ns600" in your link. I believe the ns600 path is
for older versions of mozilla.

Your configuration may be different as I downloaded and installed the
latest java from sun.

A nice link to check if you have things installed is...

http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

If you have things installed and setup it will tell you

Running "make install" as root has nothing to do with setting the suid
bit in the resulting binary.

When the suid bit is set the permissions on a binary look like this...

-r-sr-xr-x1 root root 125000 Feb 11 04:43 pwdb_chkpwd

The purpose for running "make install" as root is normally to put
binaries, libraries, etc., into directories where all users can access
them but no user can modify/delete them.

The way you are doing it is OK. However, if you have other users on
your system it is doubtful they need access to the source. It is
probably more common for people to put source in say ~/src, run make as
a normal user, then run make install as root.

When the problem happens try "netstat -n". I suspect that it will
respond quickly. This will confirm my suspicion that you have a DNS
problem. i.e. Your DNS servers are responding slowly.

If you are using an "account" and not a "subscription" then you and others
are seeing what you have reported due to the demand on the RHN servers

You need an "account". You *do not* need a subscription.

If you have a subscription you will not get rejected during periods of
high usage.

If you read the "fine print" on RHN you'll find that everyone in entitled
to a DEMO account. This gives you the right to use up2date on a single
system. RH will send you a "query" from time to time to make sure you are
still using the account. If you don't respond, your account is
terminated. Not a biggie.since if that happens you simply
re-register.

My understanding is "no". You see Linux is too efficient. Running WinXX
products puts added stress/strain on the CPU's. This causes them to

Not so strange. You can have incompatibilities between a CD-RW drive and
other CD-R and RW drives. It can even boil down to the choice of media
and how certain drives behave with certain media. I had a heck of a time

work (and it works on my Solaris 8 box) but not on my RH 8.

As root I took these 3 steps.

1. In /bin I "ln -s bash rbash" to create the symbolic link.

2. In /etc/passwd I changed the user's shell to /bin/rbash.

3. Added /bin/rbash to the /etc/shells file.

Hu..need more coffee.

As I said, this works just fine under Solaris. Must be missing something
subtle.

Ed

P.S. Doing the above is just the first step to getting a user really
restricted. I believe more needs to be donebut since I don't do it
that often.

Give them a "restricted shell". If they are using "bash" that would be
the "-r" option. See, "man bash" for details.

Of course you can get the source code. That's what openSource is all
about.

How did you get your copy of RH 8? You should have 6 CDs. 3+ of which
have rpms of all of the source.

Pardon me for butting in herebut this is one of the reasons why I
recommend the use of a good front-end to iptables. The syntax can be a
bit much to learn/understand especially when you don't use it that often.

Besides, if you are going to use iptables you may as well build up some
decent firewall rules/policies as well to give yourself the protection
that iptables was designed to provide.

I'll only suggest using shorewall, http://www.shorewall.net, as this is my
personal favorite. Easy to understand, good documentation, good examples,
great help from their mailing list. One reason I like shorewall is that
while it makes iptables easy it doesn't hide everything from you such that
you can't learn what you've accomplished.

I'm not sure what you mean by "should not be any higher than 50MB" Are
you saying that all the processes running on your system consume a total
of less than 50MB? If you are running an X server that alone takes about
110MB.

What does "top" show? You can sort by memory usage with M while running
top.

And what problem do you think you have?

If you have not added any data to /export and /usr/local it is a simple
matter of editing the /etc/fstab file to switch the mount points in the
second column. If you have already put data in either of these locations
you just have to add a step copy the data.

After you do thatjust reboot.

Generally speaking it is a good idea to optimize your disk performance by
balancing disk activity over several drives and "controllers".

One would have to know your system HW configuration, partition
configuration, swap activity, disk/partition usage in order to determine
what, if anything, is to be gained.

The answers is not "obvious".

Pretty much normal. Chances are your registered just after you installed

What Philip wrote is correct

You blew away the systemso why go through all the hassle of trying to
preserve the information when you can't be 100% sure your reinstall will
be exactly the same?

If blowing away the system and reinstalling it is the expedient method to
get you to where you wantthen so is deleting the profile on RHN and
just allowing things to take their natural courseand you won't have
any question of "Did I forget this/that/or the other'.

When you run the network configurator (GUI) you can edit the ppp0
interface and check the box that says "Allow all users to enable/disable

Or you can edit the appropriate /etc/sysconfig/networking/devices file to

It would appear from the man page description...

   [ -lf lease-file ] [ if0 [ ...ifN ] ]

that you could specify the interface you want dhcpd to listen on. To give

Or, you could block UDP port 67 on your internet facing interface.

Use google and search for LinNeighborhood.

Chances are your problem is that the script file has DOS end-of-line
characters in it.

Suggest you run them through dos2unix and try them again.

You can actually confirm the DOS type file by doing

"cat -v -t -e filename"

I belive you will see ^M at the end of the line...

Along with the other suggestions given to you it would probably be a good
idea to look at which shell you want the user to run. Most shells offer a
"restricted" mode that narrows down what a user can do.

You don't have a definition for eth0.

You have 2 identical definitions for eth2. And you are telling the system
that the default gateway is via 192.168.3.10 out of eth0.

Now, I don't know why you have 2 NIC with the same IPor what you are
trying to accomplish.

For 2 NIC you may have something like this...

Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt
Iface
61.16.7.192 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.224 U40 0 0
eth1
192.168.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U40 0 0
eth0
127.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 U40 0 0
lo
0.0.0.0 61.16.7.193 0.0.0.0 UG 40 0 0
eth1

Shorewall is a "frontend" to iptables.

You install both iptables and shorewall. You read the Shorewall
documentation and tailor its config files for you needs. On startup,
Shorewall will generate the needed iptables commands based on your
configuration. Once that is done, shorewall exits and only iptables
contiues to run.

Shorewall is text based config files. There is work (webadmin?) to get a
GUI frontend to shorewallbut IMHO you don't learn that much about
security that way.

Shorewall makes iptables easy.

It was a while agomore than a yearbut I seem to remember having
some similar difficulties. The way I resolved it was to take both NIC out
an reboot. I told the system to remove both cards from my configuration.
Next, I put one card it and booted. When that was configured OK. I shut
down and put the second card in and allowed the system to configure it.
No more problems after tht

During the install process you are asked if you want the install process
to do it automagically or if you want to do it yourself (using disk
durid?).

Did you miss that question?

Just for kicks try

mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/flash or

mount -t vfat /dev/sda /mnt/flash

Yes, this can be accomplished. It is commonly referred to as port
forwarding.

It can be done directly using the proper iptables command.

I'm lazy, however. I run a firewall on my system and use "shorewall" as
my tool to set it up. I make the necessary changes in my shorewall config
files and let shorewall invoke iptables with the proper incantation.
