I was given an MSF-5000 for VHF, without the power supply or the PA, just the
rf deck and the control deck.

I want to use it for a small on site repeater for linking in an EmCom
vehicle. My understanding is that it will put out about 5 watts without the
PA. Are there any problems with using it this way and what do I need for DC
power, I would love to run it directly off the 12V battery bank that runs the
other equipment.

I haven't even started looking at it, it is in the garage waiting the time,
but with the time approaching I thought I would send our a request and get some
info before I jumped on it.

  Thanks - KS4EC - Rob

2009-12-31 Thread Hobie
I have just set up an MSF5000 125W repeater. The duplexers are tuned, the unit
is tuned and programmed and it works kind of...When you open it with a carrier
it puts out full power, as soon as you talk (local or remote)the PA cuts out.
Drops from 80 watts to 4 watts. You can hold the PTT a long time: no drop.
Any noise into the mic, it drops. Here or a mile away, it's the same. Checked
RSS, etc. VHF Mars freq. with 2.1MHz split. Deviation? EEpots? Please help.
Thanks. PS Also tried with separate antennas on each pair of
duplexerssame.

[Repeater-Builder] MSF-5000 VCO problem

2009-11-15 Thread hl31943
I have a CXB UHF repeater and can't get the receive VCO to lock properly. I get
a peak of about 23 uA but it doesn't lock there. If I tune to where it will
lock, the M5 reading is about 13 uA. I've taken the VCO apart twice and cleaned
it.

Is substituting the transmit VCO (which does lock at 38 uA)a valid test of
anything? I've also posted this problem on the MSF-5000 group, but no answer so
far.

I'm probably in the market for a replacement VCO if anyone has one available.
Suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] MSF 5000 vhf power amp TLD2692A manual query

2008-12-18 Thread Bob M.
I've got a manual that has that PA in it. Not much there except a power
splitter, two FET PA modules (undocumented), a power combiner, and a power
sensor. There's some troubleshooting charts and some parts lists, but
absolutely nothing on the actual PA modules themselves.

Most of the sheets are big fold-outs. Those with circuit board layouts are in
color. It would take considerable time to scan them, plus it would be a very
big file. Easier to make copies at the local copy center, but that wouldn't
happen for several days and would cost several dollars plus postage.

I can give you specific info from the manual a lot faster.

2008-12-12 Thread Ralph Hogan
Guys,
Thanks for the comments. Hopefully I'll get some more time to work with it
over the holiday and get it up on site. A friend has another MSF-5000 with
the same high 900 Hz PL deviation, he's going to look at a resistor change
or pot addition experiment.

As others have said, the PL/DPL deviation is NOT separately adjustable. It's
a fixed percentage of the total deviation. It is very clean however, so even
though it might measure rather high, it'll be quite inaudible. You'd have to
add a resistor somewhere to lower just the PL level.

Make sure you measure and set the deviation with the PL turned on. Your
total deviation should be set for 4.5 to 5.0 kHz; it will be less without
PL.

I haven't seen a spec on the PL/DPL deviation in any MSF manual either.

I put up a 5000 about 6 months ago and it works well but you are correct in
that the ctcss deviation is not adjustable separately. Mine runs around 900hz
also with the total with voice set at 4.9khz. Nobody notices a hum though.

One thing I have seen some people do mistakenly is assume that the
+/-5KHz deviation spec is for voice audio. It is TOTAL deviation. You
should be staying under, really, 4.7-4.8 for ALL audio, WITH CTCSS
  running...just checking...
That said, I remember hearing on a list that the ratio is fixed. Chances
are, if you are getting 900 KHz of PL, your voice deviation is too high
  too.

Gang,
New to MSF-5000's. Great piece of hardware. But more used to working with GE
Mastr II's. Have an MSF-5000 repeater we're trying to get going on VHF. Have
experimented with both the on-board controller stand alone as well as off
board CAT. Several ee-pots to adjust in the software setting output audio
levels, but none specific to just PL encode level. We got it adjusted for 5
KHz output deviation, but noticed the PL encode deviation is a little high
at about 900 Hz. I usually like to see around 600 to 750 Hz. I couldn't find
in the manuals anywhere what Moto spec'd PL deviation at for the MSF-5000.
Looks like the PL level is a fixed percentage without an independent output
level adjust. Probably something we are doing wrong in setting levels, but
wanted to get some feedback from the group.

I think it's a standard Molex or Amp connector. You might be able to buy it
from Mouser or Digikey. I can get the Motorola part numbers for the cable end
but you will pay less elsewhere (unless it's a custom part).

I can get you the wiring for it, but I'd guess the center pin is ground and
the two outer pins feed the transformer. That should be easy to figure out.

It would be far easier to just snip the connector off and splice an ordinary
AC line cord to the wires, especially if you have no plans to ever install the
supply into a real MSF station and just want to use it stand-alone.

2008-08-17 Thread Eric Lemmon
Bob,

Both power supplies have the same capacity and physical attributes.
However, when I compared their respective schematics in the Power Supply
Service Manual 6881094E30, I saw that the TPN1185 (Battery Charger) power
supply has several connections to the station RF tray that are not used in
the TPN1186 supply. J603-5, -6, -8, and -9 have no connection on the
TPN1186 supply, but are wired to the RF Tray on the TPN1185 supply. These
are AC Fail and overvoltage signals. It would be prudent to ensure that the
appropriate interfaces on the CXB station side are wired or programmed to
use these signals.

The Power Supply Service Manual 6881094E30 is still available from Motorola
Parts for about $20.

I have built up 2 MSF 5000 and help maintain another. Even with the correct
cable, isolation (desense) of the MSF system is not good (about .25 microvolt
measured.
So far, all of our systems use the stock MSF filters feeding a good duplexer
such as the Motorola 4 can pass notch or PD 500 series.
I have played with varying the lengths of the arms and main branch. We use RX
low and TX high (all 440 systems)

Re: [Repeater-Builder] MSF 5000 CLB

2007-12-08 Thread Bob M.
If you have any kind of MSF metering panel, plug it in
and adjust the receive VCO tuning slug for 38uA in
position 5. If you don't have one, you'll have to make
something up that will plug into the RJ45 metering
jack on the front of the station. A simple 50uA DC
meter will work. Pins 6, 7, and 8 are ground, the
others are RX test points. Pin 5 is the one you'll
need to measure and adjust the tuning core.

You can do a similar procedure on the TX VCO. Move the
meter to the TX metering jack on the front and adjust
the TX VCO for 38uA.

The CXB stations were rated for 100% duty cycle. Only
the 110w and higher stations had fans on them; yours
would need the fans if it's going to be transmitting
for 15 minutes or more at a time.

The cold weather will definitely affect the VCOs, and
that's probably why the VCO LOCK LED is flickering.
But you should adjust it with a meter of some sort.
You can do a coarse adjustment by adjusting the tuning
slug to get the green LED lit all the time. If the VCO
unlocks, it will cause all sorts of problems in the
receiver, so let's tackle the obvious cause first.

[Repeater-Builder] MSF 5000 CLB

2007-12-07 Thread kd7ikz
Hi All
I am runnig a MSF 5000 CLB with a Arcom controll. I am also runnig
echolink on the repeater. I have the repeater say the time every hour
and half hour. I was going to work today and the repeater said to time
ok. Then I was going to get on echolink and the repeater did not key
up so I called home and the wife said that the TX light was on and the
RX light was blinking on and off. She tryed to reset but the RX light
would not come back on. So I just let it be for about two hours and
tryed it again and the RX light came up. can anyone gave me any ides
on what it mite be? Also I have to keep a fan on the RF tray and
station control because it gets to hot and when it TX it sounds like
it has a open squelch.I am new to the repeater world. The repeater is
working fine other then that.
Thanks

Michael,

What is the complete model number of your station? There are several
manuals that apply to the MSF-5000 station, and most of them are cheaper to
buy from Motorola than to make copies of them. Unfortunately, some are no
longer in print.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] msf 5000 900mhz id

2007-04-27 Thread Bob M.
The CW ID will only fire when the squelch is closed.
You can't tell that unless you have a digital metering
panel or RSS computer hooked up (for digital-capable
stations), or go measure the squelch circuits. Tighten
up BOTH the RCVR squelch and the RPTR squelch and see
if that helps. The method varies according to the type
of station control board.

Also note that the CW ID is sent without PL/DPL, so if
you are listening with a tone-coded squelch receiver,
you may not hear it. The PA LEDs should come on,
however.

I don't know about an MSR2000 PA because of the design of that station. I would
think that if you gave the MSF station itself the voltages it wants through the
control cable and had an external PA to take the IPA power, it would work.

P.S. I'm also interested if anybody has done something like this.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] MSF 5000 CODEPLUG VERSION ISSUES

You can't "upgrade" the codeplug to an older software version.

You have to use software that's the same or later version than
what was last used to program the radio.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] MSF 5000 CODEPLUG VERSION ISSUES

2006-04-24 Thread Bob M.
It sure sounds like you have Version 5 firmware to me.

Can you read the existing codeplug, then send it back
immediately to the station without doing anything
else, i.e. F2, followed by F8?

Can you write a "blank" codeplug to the station? I
think CONV3.DEF is the one for system 3 (version 5),
but you may have to fill in a few things first, like
Tx and Rx frequencies.

Try reloading the software from the floppy. Yes I know
it's not supposed to change, but you never know. Stuff
happens.

I have had stations come up with errors after being
programmed, from people jamming a V5 codeplug in a V3
firmware station. I just loaded a V3 codeplug into it
several times until it took it, then replaced the
firmware and started fresh with V5.

I don't know if you can "blank" an MSF5000, much less
how to do it. Luckily, even with all kinds of errors,
the CPUs usually respond to programming requests.

This is a strange one.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] MSF-5000 Manuals

2006-04-13 Thread Bob M.
The manuals below are all that's available these days.

I wouldn't call them "depot" manuals, as they're only
about 1-inch thick and are very incomplete. When I
bought my UHF set a few years ago, they had
schematics, board layouts, and parts lists for the
SSCB, TTRC, SEC modules, and some of the components in
the RF tray (Uniboard, notably). There was nothing
useful for the power supply or power amplifiers.
Theory of operation was minimal.

I also have one of the older 3-inch thick service
manuals that IS complete, with full documentation for
every module in the station. I'd call this a "depot"
manual for sure, as it even has troubleshooting info
and charts. But these are no longer available except
on the used market.

Same thing with the analog manuals. They had info on
every assembly in the station, but aren't available
any more.

The original poster inquired about a "set" of manuals,
so I would assume he is looking for info on the
digital station, which Eric provided below.

I believe they were still available new from Motorola

10+ years old, whatever they have is all that's left,
and when that's gone, they aren't making any more.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] MSF-5000 Time-out timer

2005-05-10 Thread Neil McKie

465 seconds is 7.75 Minutes ... I find it rare a TV station can
do a news broadcast for more than 5 or 6 minutes without breaking
 for some damned commercials.

Is it possible to completely remove the time-out-timer?

[Repeater-Builder] MSF-5000 Time-out timer

2005-05-10 Thread dekk5fm
I work for a TV station, and we were planning to use an MSF-5000 to
transmit our program audio to field crews. However, our local /\/\ shop
tells us that it is not possible to disable the time-out timer, and
that the maximum time is 465 seconds. We were thinking more like 35
minutes, not 7, to transmit out the audio during an entire newscast.
Any suggestions?

Thank you.

I have an

and it ID'ed the first time I programmed it. I had to change the hang timer and
now the repeater will not ID. I am using the internal Motorola controller and it
is a CXB Digital model UHF repeater. We have several of these and the others are
working fine. I have tried reloading the software into the machine several times
with no luck. Anyone know if I am missing something here?

Re: [Repeater-Builder] MSF 5000 key up delay problem (now strobe light interference)

2005-01-24 Thread Glenn Little WB4UIV

About the only way to get rid of the strobe light interference is to get as
far from the strobes as possible. Some of the strobe manufacturers have a
EMI cage to go over the strobe, but this does not do much good. This
information is about two years old when I worked for a company that
designed tower site monitoring equipment.

I wish you luck. Maybe with a new person in charge of the FCC we can get
some relief from all of the "non intentional" emitters.

Thanks Neil, that was exactly the problem.  The Spectra-Tac delay was set to 1500 msec.  I guess my second counting was a little fast, as it was only about a second and a half in reality.  I set the delay to zero for now until I can locate a non Spectra-Tac codeplug, and all seems to be working good for now.  Well except for the interference I'm getting from the strobe light on the mast that the antenna is on.  When I shut off the strobe light off all the noise goes away.  Just something else to work on I guess.

key back up again the audio comes through with no delay.  As soon as you
let the hang time expire it takes two full seconds of an incoming signal to

We have had a MSF-5000 station donated to replace of of our

Does anyone on the list know of a source to get this done?

[Repeater-Builder] MSF 5000 Internal Duplexer Tee?

2004-06-06 Thread surf_boy82
Question for the group with those familiar with MSF 5000 repeaters,
specifically the UHF ones with internal filtering:

The "Duplexer Tee", the little silver block about 1 inch square that
connects between the receiver and transmitter filter output and gives
you your antenna connection is available in several different
flavors.

Mine is the one with the green band around one of the connections.
It's the 435-475 "Transmit Low, Receive High, 5-20MHz" one.

I recently retuned the station for a different pair, transmit high,
receive low. The manual says I need the TLE5772B "Transmit High,
Receive Low 5-20MHz" with the yellow band around one of the
connections.

How critical is this? Do I actually need it? I've got no clue how
this thing works and I'm not familiar with this screwy MSF 5000 non-
duplexer type way of duplexing. Am I going to damage anything by
using the existing green banded "duplexer tee", or will I suffer any
degradation of signal, or what's the story?

I called Motorola Parts ID & Purchasing (800) 422-4210, and was told
the TLE5772B is no longer available period. Whatsoever. Stop-
bothering-us-cuz-you-aint-gonna-get-it-cuz-we-dont-got-it.

Does anyone happen to have the one I need that would be interested in
trading with me, or just selling it to me?

Any help is appreciated. Please reply via e-mail or the thread.
Thanks!

Re: [Repeater-Builder] MSF 5000

2004-06-05 Thread russ
They work great but watch out a lot of them are pageing transmitters. Some
are even 5kz tx and not 2.5kz. Some have 72 MHz receivers and some have sat
receivers. Be careful of what you are buying. The fellow who moved ours down
to the ham bands. 927 tx and 902 rx used Lab software.
You are going to love 927 Ham! We are having a ball on the Metro-Comm 927
system here in NJ.
Very best of 73,

Will the 900-MHz MSF-5000s work in the ham band? If so, do you have to use
some special "hacked" RSS software or cumbersome "hex editor" to move it to
the ham band? I see these often up for sale and/or auction and would like
to know before I consider getting one.

They make very good repeaters. If the one you have is close enough to the
HAM band then you can move it without very much of a problem.

If you don't want to tackle it, and you are close to Dallas, and you want to
sell the unit, let me know.

[Repeater-Builder] MSF 5000

2004-06-04 Thread ki5fw
I'm not familiar with Motorola, more so with GE. A local club was
given a UHF version MSF 5000 with 110 watt final. Do these make good
Amateuer Rptrs and what is required to convert them or make them work
on the Amateur bands???
Also what is this Repeater worth on the open (e-bay) market???

The club is wanting to know if it is worth the time and investment to
get it on the air.

I can't really give you much information but our club is using a (digital)
MSF-5000 on 2m and it works great. Of course it replaced a very tired GE
Master Pro so almost anything would have been an improvement. I can't
comment on the price as ours was donated by a local company that went to an
800mhz trunking system.

It takes a computer with the Motorola programming s/w and an interface box
and cable to do almost anything to the repeater - fortunately we have a
member with the necessary skills and equipment. We use an Scom 7K
controller on it which was simple to interface. There's a 25 pin DB on the
MSF with all the necessary connections.

[Repeater-Builder] MSF 5000

2003-11-12 Thread ad5ik
Hello.

I am looking for info on the MSF 5000. Is anyone using one on 2
meters? If so, how does it perform and are they a good choice for a
2 meter repeater? Also, what is a reasonable price to pay for one
(digital type).

Thanks and 73

Kirk
