How much for a CV axle?
Joey Dalton
Hillbilly Racing

I have a 1985 Chrysler Laser Turbo that is too rusty to repair. The car
is pretty much complete. For some reason, it has 4 lug swiss cheese
wheels. The 525 transaxle will not shift into gear, the front fenders
are shot, and the gauge cluster is cracked. Let me know what you need.
I can provide pictures of all parts. Any reasonable offers will not be
refused.

This car is located in Nunnelly, TN 37137.

The 88 and 89 books mention the C/S, but there is no reference to what the

SD> Re: Repositioning the Radiator?

2006-06-08 Thread MoparMn426
I would mount an Omni radiator in it. It is more narrow. It would then use
the same rad hoses as a t-II car, easy to get, and it would fit good. You
would
have to make a couple mounts, but nothing too bad. You could even cet them
from a car in a yard, then just weld or screw them in. Or you could get a T-II
rad with the cooler brackets for a direct bolt in. This would leave you around
a
6 inch gap to run the hoses on the drivers side, right where the factory
cooler was. If you have air, you would need a narrower condenser, I belive the
minivan condensor was skinnier. This is what I hope to do soon, to mount a
cummins cooler in my Daytona. I will also run an intake pipe to the front,
with a K&
N cone.>

I have been wanting to build something like this myself, but with my own
custom body.
But why the mazda trans??? Seems like that would be a lot of extra work.
Id use a 5 speed from an early Dakota. Rear wheel drive, direct fit bolt on.
Seems like a no brainer to me.

I have also thought of building a rear wheel drive Daytona. The thought that
I had for the front bearing was to use 2 old CV axles, and machine the outer
CV joint flat so that it is only the threads, splines, and flange to hold the
bearing in place. Slip it in, torque the nut, and the bearing is fine, and it
does not protrude on the inside.

Re: SD> Parts For Sale

2006-01-30 Thread MoparMn426
Roy, that is insorrect. Fuel pump block off's are on all 88 / older blocks,
89 up do not have them.

An 88 C/S Daytona would not have came from the factory with an intercooler.
Someone has added it.
The factory motor would have been a T-I, but it is possible that if someone
added an intercooler, it could have had an entire t-II engine and everything
installed.
Also, are you sure its really a C/S? I have seen Shelby Z's that someone has
added C/S emblems to the fender.
Look at the VIN. If its got an A in the 8th didgit, its a factory T-II car.
If its an 88, it would have to be a shelby Z. 10th VIN digit should be J for
88. if its a C/S it will have an AGB on the fender tag. An 88 C/S would have
the
8th digit of the VIN an E (2.2 T-I), 10th J.
89 C/S's were available with T-II's, on the AGS package. If thats what it is,
it will have AGS on the fender tag, an A in the 8th VIN spot, and a K in the
10th.

TO tell if thats a T-I or T-II, There's really no way to tell on the outside.
Black valve cover and T-II turbo can be added to a T-I, so that is no real
way to tell for sure. Same block and head. Without taking them apart its hard
to
say for sure. If its got a grey valve cover and intake, on an 88 C/S, I would
bet its a T-I like it should be, but with an intercooler added.

2005-11-19 Thread MoparMn426
Got it all straightened out friday afternoon. Thursday night, I took it for a
test drive. I had let it idle for 45 miniuts, no changes. This was WAY more
steam then you would normally see, even on a cold day. Water was spitting out
the tailpipe. But I let it cool down, and the coolant level was perfect, so
with no signs of any real problem, I gave it a test. At 5 psi, the engine would
cut out and backfire, spit and sputter. Then it just died. Pushed it back in
the driveway, and after it cooled I tried again, no start.
So friday I start looking. Still not starting at all. Cam timing was fine, no
codes, nothing. Go to check ignition timing, no signal from timing light.
Check into it, no spark.
Turned out to be a cap / rotor. Replaced that, started right up, with no
problems at all. No more steam either.
Wierd.
It ran fine till I replaced the gasket. Must have gotten some dirt or grease
in the cap when putting timing belt in after the gasket swap.

I recently had a head gasket give up on my. Just finished changing it out.
Fired the car up, oil looks clean, but there is a lot of vapor in the exahust.
Does not smell like coolant though. I put my hand by the tailpipe while it was
running, it got covered in small drops of water. Just water though. No signs
of coolant. When it blew the gasket, there was no coolant, just water. Im
trying to figure out if its leaking water into a cylinder, or if this is water
in
the exahust from the blown gasket. Worried I have a cracked head, or that the
new gasket is leaking. Its an MP gasket. Anyone know what I should look for? Im
letting it cool down, then Im gonna pull the plugs and look in there. Might
try to take it for a drive. Need any advice, hopin to use the car in the
morning. THANKS

The thing to do would be to find out what the centerline of the TAFT s2 is,
then use a degree wheel to set it correctly.
I also use a Taft S2, and square tooth sprocket. Mine does not start to pull
untoll 3k, pulls hard to 5600.
Mine is installed with the 88 square sprocket the car was born with, and the
0 offset cam key. I am planning to get the centerline spec and degree it in
soon, though.
If you Dyno yours, please let me know what setting worked best for you,
although I suspect mine will be slightly different, with my gear ratios, and
the 85
head I have.

Great info.
If you're using a Square sprocket cam gear on a roller cam would you retard
or advance the cam by 4 degrees to start?
I am now running a Taft S2 roller cam and my GUESS was 4 degrees retarded
with my adjustable square tooth cam sprocket. I came to this conclusion as
most
said so.

Shelby retarded the camshaft 4 degrees in the carburated Shelby Chargers with
a special cam sprocket to make more high rpm hp
So the cam did change between 88 and 89, so they could have different
centerlines.
If it lost power at higher RPM, it would indicate that the cam needs to be
retarded. So the 89 sprocket seems to have 4 degrees retard over the square
tooth sprocket. Either use the 4 degree offset key to retard the cam, or swap
back
to the slider. I wonder what the 89 2.5 TBI sprocket is? whats the difference
between that and the 2.2 TBI/turbo sprocket is?
Maybe a square tooth tall deck 2.5 would work? I want to round these things
up, and see what they come in at. Could make things eiseir for someone needing
to change cam timing.

The round tooth sprocket and the square tooth sprocket should have the same
timing. Any difference should be the cam itself. I could be wrong though.
However, remember that the same roller cam was used with the 88 cars that still
had
square teeth, so I doubt they would make a noticible chang in timing like
that.
You could always get a set of offset cam keys and see if that fixes it, and
keep the roller, or swap in the slider, and see how that runs.

Hello, over the weekend I installed a 89 roller cam head onto my 87 turbo 2
motor. when it came time for the timming belt pulley on the cam, I just
swaped those so I could use my existing belt and not have to change the
bottom pulley as well. I think I read at one time that the cam would be off
4 degrees. this head was gasket matched, new guides and a valve job. I was

I didnt realize the seats were different.

The gauge in my 86 C/S has the electronic speedo. So cable. So baybe it was a
mid year change? It has a cable, but that drives the cruise.

Remember that they all have electronic pickup at the tranny, for the EFI.

everything will swap for the most part since it was virtually the same
interior from 1984 to 1989 with some minor cosmetic and vendor changes along
the

Re: SD> Interior Question

2005-10-22 Thread MoparMn426
Yes, everything will work. There were a couple wiring changes, but it will
all go in. Are you keeping the 87 dash? Would be easier, if its any good.
Everything else is direct bolt in. I cant think of any differences, other than
the
stitching/material on the seat, and the very minor differences in the dash.
Actually, the differences there are only the gauge faces, and the ones with the
sat belts hooked to the doors had the lower dash change. Everything else was
color changes only.

I acquired a 1987 Daytona as my daily driver. I also have (had) a 1986
Daytona. The 86 daytona has a beautiful interior, but has a bad case of
cancer the floor pans, firewall, and rear wheel tubs are badly rusted
through. I junked the 86, but pulled the interior out. My 87's interior has
seen better days. I know that both interiors are slightly different, but I
was wondering if I the 86 complete interior would fit in the 87.

The A/C compressor in my 88 started making a lot of noise, and stretching the
belt, so I swapped it with a used one from a 91. The replacement looked a
little different, but the clutch and pully were the same, and it bolted right
in.
It worked great, except it has a gasket that leaks all the refrigerant. It is
near the clutch end of the compressor, the end bolts on to the main body of
the compressor, and I can see the oil bubble out when I tried to fill it. Can
this gasket be replaced? I am really trying to avoid buying a new compressor, I
just dont have the cash. The old one I pulled out was hard to turn by had
before I emptied the system, but now it turns easily. Im tempted to try it
again.
But I know it wont work. No one else in town has a compressor. Almoast all

there were problems with the disks, but they upgraded the disks they were using

covers and swingvalve housings and grinding the notch for the intake runner.
Bolted it in and put it all back together. Car sounds good, idles fine, no
smoke, but no boost either It wont boost at all, in fact it sits at 2
inches
of vaccuume at WOT. No hoses leaking or anything. Idles at 15 inches. Sounds
normal, acts normal, just no boost. I thought the wastegate can's arm came off
the swingvalve, but its fine. No vaccuume leaks. Anyone have a suggestion? Or
is the turbo just dead? It was good when pulled, but had been around a while.

2005-06-03 Thread MoparMn426
Is it possible for a short to happen inside a starter? THe brown wire betweek
starter relay and starter solenoid in one of my cars is grounded. A circit
tester lights up when placed on the battery positive and the brown wire. I
checked with a DMM, there is .4 ohms between the negative battery post and the
starter solenoid plug. I pulled the wire out of the loom and it looks fine. No
visible breaks in the insulation. I felt down there and the lug on the starter
is
not touching the block or anything. I was worried it was wet, but its not. So
I am starting to think the short is inside the starter itself. Later today

life. Now with the one onthe engin plugged in, when I turn the car to run it
powers the pump for its initial charge like it is supposed to.
I think I figured out the starter problem as well. There is a short in the
brown wire between the relay and the solenoid. I think I know why... There is
coolant leaking from the back of the head!!! Seems to be getting the starter
wires wet, causing the short. Do any of the intake/exahust bolt holes break
into
a water jacket in the head? That would explain the coolant leak...

In an 86 T-I G body, what would keep the fuel pump from coming on when you
turn the key on? Its been sitting for years, and Im getting it going again,
but
when you turn the key, nothing happens. The starter dont turn over either. I
can hear a relay click, but thats all. I just put the starter in, and its
known
good. What should I look for?

Here is a VIN decoder for verification of airbag cars:
http://www.omnilith.net/omniville/vinpage.htm
My 88 Shelby Z (the hardtop Dodge, not the T-top Chrysler, which has no
airbag) has a build date of 6-17-88 (located left side of 3rd line from bottom
on
fender tag).
The VIN is 1B3YA64A1JGxx
So it was built in St. Louis on 6-17, and has driver airbag and manual belt,
passenger auto belt.

The 88 Chrysler Shelby Z has a build date of 3-10-88. St. Louis plant, no
airbag, manual belts.
1C3BA64A7JGxx

And my 89 C/S:
1-17-89 St Louis plant DRIVER AIRBAG!manual belts
1B3XG24AXKGxx

Mat, What is the build date of your 88 car with airbag?

Are there any daytonas built at other plants? I have only seen cars from St.
Louis.

Subject: RE SD> Does this look right?

are you sure what you were looking at were 88 models. the dash for the 88 and
89 are identical. dash design didnt change until 1990. 3 easy ways to tell an
88 from an 89. the first is look at the build date in the drivers door jamb
on the door itself if its still there or still legible. the 89 model
production run started in october of 1988. anything before that is an 88
model. the
second thing is the headlamp door motor wiring. the 88 models used a 4 wire
plug
for the door motors, the 89s used a 2 wire plug for the door motors. the
third
way to tell is by looking at the VIN specifically the 11th digit as counted
from the left to right. A is 1981, B is 1982, C is 1983, so G is 1988 and H
should denote 1989.

hope this clears things up a bit

SD> Re: 88 airbags, WAS: Does this look right?

2005-05-30 Thread MoparMn426
Yeah, my 88 Shelby Z had a factory airbag. Its in the VIN, I forget offhand
which didgit and what letter it is, but you can see in the VIN if the car has
airbag, passive or manual belts, whatever. Mine has passive on pass side,
manual on drivers side, with airbag. But when I bought it, it had tapped
something,
and the bag was blown, so I tossed it in the trash and installed an 84 tuff
wheel.

actually the dodge daytona did have an airbag installed in the steering wheel
in 1988. my 1988 shelby Z with a build date of april 1988 has a factory
installed airbag wheel, and the stock wiring harness is a 1988 airbag
harness. this
car was not modded to have this. its a factory harness setup. at the end of
the 1988 production model year airbags were phased in. there were a total of
1,859 daytonas of all type in 1988 produced with the airbag available for
purchase by the public at the end of 1988.

2005-05-28 Thread MoparMn426
The junkyard I shop at here recently crushed EVERYTHING. There were 3 or 4
LeBarons and a Daytona I wanted parts out of, too. 2 Infinity II stereos, 2
didgital guage clusters, 2 Turbo motors, and a 532 with 3.87 gears, all gone.
They
had been there less than 2 weeks before, but I didnt have any cash.
They also crushed a complete and VERY restorable 58 Desoto Firesweep
Sportsman I had been ASKING to buy! There are no words for how pissed that made
me

am I the only one noticing that since the price of steel is rising, our 80s
Mopars are lasting a very short time in the scrap yards before they get
crushed and sold? Our local yards used to have 200 to 300 L, H, P, AA, G,
and J bodies at any one time. Now they have 50 and a lot of open space. I am
concerned because our supply of plentiful and cheap parts could be coming to
an abrupt halt.

2005-05-12 Thread MoparMn426
Just wanted to let everyone know about the experience I just had. Ordered a
couple of gaskets from Chris, online late one night. My order shipped the next
morning, and was in my hands the next afternoon. Opened it up and one of the
gaskets was wrong. Called him, and he IMMEDIATELY sent me the correct gasket,
and REFUSED to let me pay him for the shipping. I told him there was no need to
lose money shipping me an order for 2 dollars worth of merchandise. He says
it was his mistake, well, yes it was, but he told me to keep the wrong part,
and made sure to fix things, and I dont expect businesses to go out of their
way
on a $2 order and LOSE MONEY, lol. Chris is great, and great to deal with. We
just had him rebuild a turbo for my friends Charger, good turnaround time,
great service, and his braided lines are NICE, hehe.

Someone had mad it sound easy to get the papers to buy the R12? And then where
do you get the freon? I have a hose, guage, and one can. I would like to be
able to get more. If the system has been opened, or is empty, besides the
freon, what else do you need? What kind of oil, etc? I would rather pay a

H, You are right. The thing that ruins its looks is not the color, its
the lack of stripes. Black would look great. A nice semi gloss though, like the
hoods of old 6bbl Roadrunners and stuff. I hate the lack of the factory seats.
Now, if he had those racing seats embroidered with the shelby logo like the
originals, he'd have something

The paint job is cool, but I think it could be better. Flat black..
Yes, a flat black shelby skunk stripe up and over that car, and then
flat black shelby decals on the sides along with the part that's
usually silver along the bottom in flat black. I think that would make
that an absolutely gorgeous and very unique Shelby Charger. :) That
shade of gold is far better than what Ma Mopar put on the Aries in the
early 80's.. ;)

Thats a good way to fix it. New bearings are a good idea. The thing of it is,
if you are going to do that, you might want to hone the cylinders and re-ring
it. And of course, if you do that, It will make sense to get a valve job and

Hi all,
I have decided to scrap the idea of tranny, torque converter, flex plate,
axles, etc on this '85 T&C. We are replacing the long block with an '87 one. I
have thought maybe..just pull the '85 crank out of the old engine and get
it polished or turned and get another new set of bearings and just swap out
cranks instead. We have both engines out so it wouldn't be that big of a deal.
Anyone else have any suggestions? It is the whole 8-bolt crank VS 6-bolt
crank, 3-bolt torque converter VS 4-bolt torque converter thing. Thanks a lot,

 Jerry Lewis

SD> Re: dim headlights WAS: Headlight module for LeBarons

2005-04-18 Thread MoparMn426
Mine are very dim as well. I know headlights dim over time, and mine are old
and need to be replaced. But I believe the headlight swith causes them to dim
as well. The rehostat for the interior lights is messed up, the lights do not
dim correctly. I figure the connections for the headlights are degraded as
well. I have had several headlight switches fail in the past, and I keep
several
spares from other cars, but they all have the same problems. I have been
thinking of adding relays to mine, to brighten the headlights, and also to keep
the
low beams on while the high beams are on.
Before I do this, are the headlight switches available new still? Are there
downsides to haveing the high and low beams on at the same time (always
wondered why this wasnt done anyway, more light seems better/safer to me). What
has
everyone else done about dim lights? What kind of relays should I use, with the
current draw of the headlights?

Tho I did note that the headlights were pretty dim and finally
installed relays under the hood to give them full battery voltage. But
reflowing those joints got the lights to go up and down. :)

I think I finally found what I am looking for. I called Dodge this

SD> Re: Pre-83 Radio Wiring Conversion

2005-04-01 Thread MoparMn426
Here are the connectors in the later plugs. I pulled a few sets a while back,
so I dont remember wich set came from what car, but the 3 I have in front of
me are all the same colors on the wires.
 Grey connector
pin 1 (labeled on back of dash harness connector you pulled from yard), MUTE.
only the talking cars have a wire here, not sure what color. It mutes the
radio so that Mr. Speak n Spell call tell you rour door has been transformed
into
a jar. pin 2, black/red tracer, left front neg. 3: blue/red, right front neg.
4: black/yellow, illumination pos. 5: orange/white, illumination dimmer.
6:red/white switched ignition 7:pink, constant positive from batt, for radio
memory
 black connector
pin one: power antenna. None of the sets I have here have a wire here, but
the cars with power antenna have one, not sure of color. this is your amp
remote
signal. 2: brown/yellow, left rear positive. 3:blue /white, right rear pos.
4: green, left front pos. 5:purple, right front pos. 6:brown/green, left rear
neg, 7:blue/orange, right rear neg.

The 2 illumination wires, i cant remember offhand where you can splice them
in at the headlight switch, and I cant find my book with the wiring diagram in
it. But I'm sure you or someone here can figure it out. Its pretty simple. Im
hooking it up in my 76 pickup.

The radio I pulled out only has only FOUR wires running from it vs.
the normal amount of 12 to 14 colored wires attached to the connectors.

I was wondering if someone knew the wiring formula for me to convert this to a
later model plug in setup so I can simply plug & play a nice late model
factory (non-Infinity) Chrysler stereo radio in it. I think I've got all the
supplies I need, as I recently cut off some of the female gray & black
connectors from a few Dodges from the junkyard to splice in but I need to know
what goes where to make everything work correctly.

The wires coming from the mono AM radio are as follows: a light green next to
a black wire going to a black twin connector (which connect to the dash
speaker harness) and a red wire & a orange wire going to a bigger white plug.
The red appears to be the power and the orange wire routes to a removable bulb
lighting the faceplate. From prior notes on file the newer wiring is as
follows (with minor wire color changes):

left front speaker- brown/yellow stripe, dark green (spliced together in
the harness)
brown/red stripe
right front speaker- dark blue, violet (spliced together in the
harness)
dark blue/red stripe
radio memory-pink
nightime illumination- orange
ignition on/acc radio power- red
nighttime illumination dimmer- yellow

I'll only be using two door speakers in this system (it's a temporary beater)
but I'd like to figure out this formula since I've got to do it again on my
1982 Rampage Sport to put in a custom stereo w/amps later on.

Yes, all the parts from an omni will convert your SC to auto. My buddy's car
was factory five speed, he converted to auto with omni parts. Now we are
swapping it back to 5 speed. I doubt he wants the auto parts we removed, I will
ask
him when he gets home next week. He would probably sell you the whole setup:
L body tranny mount, shifter and cable, and whats left of the kickdown (we cut
the brackets up for something we were making, because the tranny was dead),
brake pedal, and we are looking for L body 5 speed wiring, so we dont have to
butcher the auto wires we have. Its the part that hooks to the backup light
switch, and the neutral safety on the auto.

Joey

Shelby was a sourch of aftermarket wheels back in the late 70s and early
80s. I'd bet those are for a Pinto, or Vega. I know the Vegas (H body) and
the HS body (Monza,Sunbird,Starfire,Skyhawk) had 4x4" pattern. But the
offset looks like a FWD application. I have heard of people using 4x4" on
4x100mm. but I NEVER would. The custom wheels I had on my 1980 Sunbird had
oval offset washers and slotted holes in the rim, so they would work with
100mm or 4". What is weird is that they are standard patterened wheels, but
he has metric lugnuts. Back then I would assume that anything US would have
had standard studs.

2005-01-09 Thread MoparMn426
I have a 85 T1 engine from a Turbo Z that im using for my 84 Rampage..
Would this have the 10mm or 11mm headbolts?

10mm

What mopar performance head gasket should I run..
stock T1 head w/T2 component buildup (GLHS style)

You want the T-! gasket. Even if you use a crossdrilled head. The block
isnt crossdrilled, so use the non crossdrill gasket. Ive used crossdrill
gaskets
on non drilled engines and not noticed any difference form the non drill
gasket, but I have heard that the coolant holes are different sized (smaller)
in
the drilled gasket, to make better use of the crossdrilling, and that will
reduce colling if not crossdrilled. I cannot confirm that, just hearsay, but
if
you are ordering the gasket, they are the same price, so even if the little
holes are the only differenc, they wont do a bit of good, so might as well get
the other just in case.

also any differences in the water pump housings G body vs. L body?

Yes, the L body housing on the block is different. The heater core return is
located on the g body water pump, L body housing does not have this, the
return is on the radiator. So you need to match the pump housing to the
radiator
you will use.

I had a common block in my other L body and had a sweet 1 piece pan gasket..
Went to the parts store and all they had were the cork gaskets listed..
Anyone have a 1 piece pan gasket on a 88 and older engine?

no, only the common blocks have this. You need to get the cork gasket's
rubber ends. Only use the rubber ends, forget the cork, and run some ultra
black
high temp silcone for the rest.

2004-12-26 Thread MoparMn426
Chris
Meant to get back to you sooner, sorry for the delay. Im assuming this is
the drivetrain from the 85 daytona, so its sitting on the floor already? You
can pull the tranny off, leaving just the torque converter. It should come off
if you pull straight out. If its still in a car, skip that, it just makes
things easier to reach.
Next pull the 4 bolts that hold the TC to the flexplate. They are 18mm.
Easy to reach with a wrench, if the tranny is out of the way. If not, you will
need to pull the lower inspection cover and get them from there with a socket
or wrench, just turn the engine over to reach all 4.
That should have it off of ther, then just pull the flex plate. *6 and newer
have 8 17mm bolts. An 85 will have 6, Im not sure if they are still 17mm, or
larger, with that setup. After that its ready to bolt on a flywheel and
clutch, just remember the flywheel needs longer bolts than the flexplate, so
use
the bolts from the 5 speed donor.

Joey Dalton

Ive never delt with the automatics before and have no idea what needs to be
done to seperate the trans from the engine.. I\ve unbolted the
transmission bolts and this wont seperate..
If anyone knows how to do this and the sizes of the bolts that need to be
removed, that would be fantastic! I didnt want to try and pry it apart
because I was unsure..
Also.. I have to borrow or buy tools as I need them sence a good

SD> Re: Cam Timing Question

2004-12-26 Thread MoparMn426
The roller cam and lifters drop right in. Do not swap the cam caps! May be
off a little, from one head to the other. Yes, its been done, yes it works,
but it can also cause lots of bearing clearance problems. If you want to plug
the slider oil squirters, for better oil pressure, just squeeze a little
anerobic gasket maker into the squirter groove before you bolt the cam in.
You can use the 85 square tooth gear just fine. If you feel the need to
adjust, go for it. It will be fine either way. The car mar drive a little
better
by tuning the cam timing, for more bottom end, or more top end. But it will
be fine as is. If you decide to adjust, any of the 3 methods will work fine.
Removing the cam key just makes it hard to set. Offset keys are great
because they make it easy, and you know where it is. Adjustable gear is best
for
frequent changes, so you wont need that.

Before you do the T-II swap, you might want to consider the 11mm head bolt
conversion.

Joey Dalton

I am planning on swapping my 85 2.2 Turbo Cam and Slider Rockers over
to a 1990 Turbo Cam with Rolling Rockers. Dimensionally, everything
should just drop inremove the cam caps and swap everything. My
question is regarding the cam sprocket and the effect on timing. I am
planning on simply unbolting the square tooth cam sprocket from my 85
cam and bolting it on the newer 90 slider cam. Apparently, doing this
will effect my cam timing by retarding things 4 degrees. Am I
correct?

Is the solution to this using off-set cam key (like those provided by
FWDperformance for $50) or is the solution to use an adjustable cam
sprocket (also available for ~$130)? Of course I prefer not to spend
any money

Do I need the keys or adjustable sprocket or can I simply line up the
cam timing manually as specified by Donavan on his webpage?
(http://www.thedodgegarage.com/timing_belt.html) I do not plan on
tweaking this after I have the timing set.

I should continue to use the cam caps from the original 85 cam and not
the newer 1990 roller cam caps? I know the difference in oiling
channels but more oil on the cam is probably still a good thing, even
though the roller doesn't need it.

The engine in question is an 85 2.2 Turbo I. Plans are to convert it
to a stage II calibrated TII in the very near future. I was going to
do this swap prior to swapping the turbo and manifolds and other TII
required parts.

Anything else I need to be aware of?

Thanks.

2004-12-21 Thread MoparMn426
Yeah, That one never occured to me. The TC/auto. Did that have normal T-II
internals?
Shelby Lancers did not have forged cranks. Remember, they were t-I's
converted to T-II. They had T-I internals, cast cranks, LW rods. Also that
was non
common block.

Non turbo common block 2.2's were cast crank, and turbos w/auto were all T-I
(2.5 cast crank), except for the detuned T-II in the TC.

So you pulled it from a TC???

well we know it wasnt a 2.5. all 2.5 cranks are cast. hmm t2 auto. the TC
comes to mind. not many cars came stock with a t2 auto. I know the maserati
tc did. most daytonas lancers etc came thru with an auto/turbo but it was a
2.2 t1 with the mitsu. im thinking of a shelby lancer or a lancer shelby

the lancer guys can prolly shed more light there.

common blocks that would have a forged crank are all 2.2's 1989+ t2, 1990+
T4, 1991+ t3.

the 89 t2 with auto is in some of the 89 TC's. detuned at that. :( most i
have seen are 3.0 v6, i have seen 1 16v 5 speed in person. i have seen
several t2 autos.

That would have been anerobic gasket maker. Thats the correct stuff to use,
per the fsm. Same stuff used for cam caps, and a bunch of other stuff. Glues
it in pretty good. Yes, it breaks down after all these years, but blowby

I have pulled it by pulling the bracket out. The bracket bolts to the block
with 15 mm bolts, the bearing bolts to the bracket with 13's. Pull either,
and drop it as far down as you can. Then compress the CV joints, and pull
down.
you should be able to pop the axle out of the intermediate. Sometimes they
are stuck, might have to hit it with a hammer, so make sure its free before
you try to get it out. If thats the case, check that thing out, sometimes its
a
sign the splines are goin bad. Just had to replace my axle and intermediate
shaft a while back because they were completely stripped.

I pulled a very nice standard/standard forged common block crank at the yard
today. I already have a spare incase I hurt something in one of my motors
so I'll offer it here before listing it on Ebay. This thing is like
perfect, odometer indicated 46K miles, oil was clean, and every bearing rod
and main was perfect with no color showing thru. Also this was an automatic
car so even the #3 main didn't have any side load wear from a lifetime worth
of clutch actuation. As close to new as you can get while still being 15
years in a motor, a micro polish and you're running. $225. +shipping, yeah
that's a bit steep but this yard charges $75 + 18 core so I am not exactly
price gouging here. It was a crying shame to leave the pistons/rods but the
yard was closing and I was out of time :-(

I just had a new customer call me today discussing the restoration of his
recently acquired 1986 GLHS. While we were talking about it I discovered that
according the dash plaque it was #002.

I know the #001 edition of each of the numbered cars was set aside for
Shelby's personal collection and the special nature of the 86 GLHS #001. I've
heard the story behind the first handful of numbered cars is that they were
typically set aside for personal friends of Carroll's and I wanted to see if
anyone knew the unique story of the #002 car such as who it went to and it's
history.

I believe it may have been sent to his old friend at Fitzgerald Dodge in
Laconia, NH.

Yep, fits and works fine. Some body styles had a slightly different bend in
the lever, to clear different consoles, but I have seen shadow shifters, if I
remember right, they looked identicle. The neon shifter is bent a little
more, but works fine in a Daytona. The SRT 4 shifter looks good in there. Pretty
much any of them will fit, and work, just some will be a better reach from
the armrest, and not be up in the cupholders or anything. The daytona lever is
baisically straight, so any of them with little bend will be perfect.

no idea. I never said it couldnt be done, just that they sold new hubs.
Maybe it was mostly just to convert the wheel pattern? With a RWD pattern in the
rear, you would want to convert the front if you wanted to have the wheels
match.
Maybe he did like the other guy here said, and put the end of an axle in
there?
I towed 2 of my cars 5 miles, with no axles in them, when I moved recently.
The wheel bearings are loose in the hubs of both cars. Ive done that many
times before, however, for longer distances, with no problems. I had never known
it was bad for it, until it happened a couple of months ago, even then I
didnt know why, till it was said on here. Now Im wondering if I will have to
replace the hubs/bearings, or If they will tighten up again when I install axles?
Anyone know?

There were two C/S options available for the '89 Daytona:
- -C/S (AGS) 2.2l tII, A555, Shelby brakes and suspension, base Daytona
exterior with rear spoiler, and I beleive Pumper wheels.
- -C/S (AGB) 2.5l tI, A520(A413 too?), Shelby brakes (mine had 4-wheel disc,
but base daytona springs), base Daytona exterior with rear spoiler, and
Eurocast or "snowflake" wheels.

"AGS" or "AGB" will be stamped on the tag next to the hood latch.

When MP sold the k frame, they also sold front hubs, eleminated need for
front cv nut, and converted front bolt circle to match musclecar wheels

Joey
first off you cannot use the stock FWD hubs and bearings on the front since
everything is pressed together on the FWD wheelbearings. as such if you did
this there would be nothing to retain the wheel hub from flying off the car
in an
extreme cornering situation except mebbe the fact that it is pressed onto the
bearings inner race. Scairy thought. you could probably use the stock front
bearings and hubs if you use the outer axle stub and spline assembly from a
FWD
axle, and nut and cotter key it in place on the hub to keep it from pulling
apart. the nut on a FWD axle is what holds the hub from coming off the
bearings
inner race.

Some grinding will be needed on the trans mount bracket. You'll see
where. Also, the clutch arm may want to pivot lower (not sure about
'90). You can either use a '91+ clutch cable or re-key the arm by
grinding off one of the splines. You'll see what I mean.

I left mine alone, the cable adjuster adjusted the cable, it works fine, but
not all cars will adjust correctly.

Your old console and boot is fine, looks fine. Thats what I used, before I
cut the lever in half, lenghtened the bottom, and added a hurst t handle. Now
the t handle sits on the top of the boot. Shifts NICE!!! MUCH BETTER
transmission than the 555, better gearing for the g body, and stronger design (no
need for chrome moly end plate) even better if you can get a 523 with 385 gears.
Mine does. Look in 2.5 n/a daytonas.
VERY nice with heavy cars. Mine picked up 3 MPG by turning 500 more rpm at
the same speed.

Yes, but it's not that critical since you don't have the reverse lockout
business.
