[RCSE] Aileron differential
Greetings! A question about aileron differential. I presume the 3030 and the 4000 are the same, my measurements are with the 3030. I set up LA=(servo)1, RA=2, LF=3, RF=4, according to the little sketch in the Profi 3030 manual. I set the aileron movement to be exactly the same, say 1 cm up and own. I then activate aileron differential. At 0 differential, both up and down are the same. At 100% there should be only up and no down as in maximum differential. I've never seen this. At maximum or 100% differential with 1 cm up, I will normally get about 0.4 cm down. I never remotely approach zero downward movement. Is that % differential scale arbitrary or at 100% differential should I indeed see no downward movement of the aileron. If the latter what, might I be doing wrong or different to see what I do? [RCSE] RE: [SALglider] Bonding Plexigls
If you are bonding Plexiglas to other Plexiglas the manufacturer makes a solvent cement that will produce a bond with strength equal to the original product. You wet one piece with the cement and press it into contact with the mating piece. It fixture hardens in about 5 minutes and proceeds to get stronger over the next 24 hours as the solvent works its way out of the plexi. I did an underwater camera case with this stuff and it worked as advertised. Any plexi supply house should be able to provide the product. I don't know the cost; you'll have to contact RCM. Fiberglass fuselages are available from 2 sources, soaringspecialties.com, and Great Planes. The differences are these: My fuselage is made in the USA and weighs about half a pound (or more!) less than the one from GP. There's is slightly cheaper, but I don't know if they actually have any in stock or not. I have 4 left and will have more made when I get down to 2. [RCSE] Re: Antenna configuration
I'm working up a minimalist pod and boom 2M and in order to further reduce the size of the pod thought I would put the receiver in the wing as the wing is rather large and there is plenty of room for the receiver in there. It's a 3-piece wing, though, and the center panel is only 20 so I was wondering if it's ok to run the antenna toward one tip then back an inch or so and then toward the other tip, repeating the process until the antenna length is used up. It seems like it would be better to have a connector, like a mini plug or something, on the center panel, and the remaining piece of antenna in the tip. That way, when you connect them, you'll have the full length of the antenna, but won't have to deal with leftover stuff hanging out. While we're on the topic of connectors, you could also have the Rx connect to the antenna which is inside the fuse. That way, you'd avoid unbalancing the wing. -J RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] Antenna configuration
I have to ask, what receivers are you guys using? I'm used my hitec supreme in my hades ( which has a carbon boom) for about 2 years and it works great. I can walk far enough away and still have control so that I can barely see the model at all. It however has a boom longer then a 1.5 meter palne as it has a 110 inch wing.. Rhett -Original Message- From: Arne Ansper To: Art Mcnamee Cc: Rick Van Clief; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 8/9/2003 8:12 PM Subject: Re: [RCSE] Antenna configuration Carbon booms may be single strands or if they are wraped with another piece of carbon cloth that ties the strands together then your antenna is inside a tube. This will screw up reception. An ohm meter can tell if you have single strands or if they are connected together.Don't put your antenna in a tube. This seems to be typical unidirectional carbon where there are many strong strands in one direction and weak strands spaced 2cm from each other in order to keep the strong strands in place. So I think they are connected with each other. When testing place your plane pointing away from you or directly at you. Walk about 150 feet away and with your antenna collapsed and pointed at your plane try the controls. If things are OK then go fly. If not change the location of your antenna. It could even be in the wing. The end of the antenna is the weakest signal. That's why pointing the plane at you or away from you is the most severe test. Hmm, my tests indicated that the worst position was when the angle between TX and RX antennas was 45 degrees. 90 degrees was also bad. And the best position was, when the RX antenna was directly pointing to TX or away from it. I used helper and fully expanded antenna in my tests. Re: [RCSE] LiPoly fires
Batteries are dangerous the worst battery incident I ever saw happened when a bunch of sealed Gates D-Cell Lead Acid I am now testing a plane using an 8amp 22v Li-poly pack and it makes me very nervous. is it possible to put a fuse on the pack in case of a dead short? The motor can pull up to 45 amps, but will normally only be pulling 8 to 20 amps. What size would I use for short circuit protection? I think it would be simple to solder an automotive fuse in series with the motor, but I don't know what value. Mark Mech www.aerofoam.com RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] Tip: download the blaster worm (LovSan) fix now
I don't quite knew where I got it, perhaps here or elsewhere, but this blaster worm virus (also called LovSan) was hard to get rid off. In case you get it, go to website: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.rem oval.tool.html and download a small program for free. I had to run it a couple of times to clean my disks. It will also ask you if you want to download the Windows fix - which you should already have done, but many people didn't. Also, follow the instructions concerning turning off your restore utility options, although if you were really counting on having your last system restores available I wouldn't know what to tell you as it seems that things get deleted. Even if you don't have the blaster virus now you might as well download the fix because if you get the virus, it will close down your computer after a few minutes, thus making it difficult to download anything (it took me an hour of trying to get the removal program etc). [RCSE] LSF Site..News
Hey Folks, Some updating of the Nats Pages on the LSF site has been done, but not all of them... I still need to get some Pix Up there as well. We have discovered a problem with the Site Hosts and CGI scripts, which has slowed us on getting the Nomination Page up. The election Committee has been selected, and LIKE THE LAST ELECTION, an address is included at the bottom of the nomination ballet so that it can be printed and mailed in to one of the committee persons. We have 3 people involved in this effort. One will collect Internet ballots, one will collect mail in ballots, and a 3rd will collate and puiblish the data to the LSF site. We are going to try to have the issue sometime this week. Meanwhile, as I type, we are putting up the mail-in nomination ballet only, for those of you who are in a hurry to nominate someone. Please be mindful, of who and why you nominate, be sure that they will have the time to put in on the job. The board nominations will be included on the ballet as well. Jim Deck, is willing to serve his last stand As Secretary.. This will insure a smooth transition to the NEW Crew if he remains. Edwin Wilson, is Stepping up for President, And Ron Allen is will ing to serve his last stand As Treasurer. The Board currently has no options for Vice President. Only LSF Members, those who have achieved Level 1 as of August 1, 2003 are elegible to participate in this process. Only one vote will be casts per eligible person, If more than one vote is discovered from the same person, those votes shall be nulled by the election committee. All nominations must be in by October 1, 2003, either Mail or Internet. A List of who was nominated and the number of votes recieved, will be listed on the LSF site, after Nominations close, and the ballot is generated. Sooo, let the campagin begin. I am sorry that this is getting started a little late, What with locating in the last couple of weeks, working and the Nats, things have been a little hetic to say the least. If you have anything else you'd like to bring out to show off, we'd love to see it. I'll play the motor run duration by ear, based on how the planes that show up perform: if everybody can speck out in 45 seconds, I'll shorten the runs accordingly as the day goes on. If the speed 400s are wallowing, I'll bump the time up - not trying to hammer anyone (this year ; ) )Durations will be set based on conditions and planes, shooting for 8-10 minutes with a minimal landing task. This is our first LMR attempt, and the main goal will be to have fun and get as much flying in as possible. If anyone has any suggestions, I'll listen to them right up until contest time. Pilot's meeting scheduled for 930, entry fee will be the club contest rate of $1.00. Hope you can make it, Brent, DARTS www.daytonsoaring.org RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] Bonding Plexigls
I assume you are going to support the plexi-glas on some kind of framework. You can use double sided tape to hold the plexy to the wood supports, and fill any gaps in the plexi-to-plexi or plexi-to-pattern joints with modeling clay. Roll up a 'snake' of clay and press it along the joints with your fingers, try to get it into any gaps. Use a single edged razor blade to strike it off flush on flat surfaces, and use the corner to create a sharp corner in the parting surface-to-pattern joint. Why use plexy? Soft pine or other smooth, long grain clear (no knots) wood works very well and is easily fitted to the pattern, and can be finished with lacquer sealer in a short time. Any imperfactions on the original pareting surface will be matched on the second surface as it will be cast against the first one. .bc([EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.widomaker.com/~conk Williamsburg, VA 23185 On Thu, 14 Aug 2003, hayman wrote: Any suggestions for the best way to bond 1/4 thick Plexiglas. Re: [RCSE] Antenna configuration
I do not know for sure, but I suspect that this is a bad idea. I recently did some experiments with antenna shape. I have DLG with carbon boom. I was little bit afraid that carbon tube might reduce the range and decided to put the antenna into wing. Antenna was coming out from the wing saddle and was then going to the wingtip, hidden in the slot in front of aileron. Since the wing was short about half of the antenna was in the fuselage, so the antenna was shaped like L. What happened is that I lost radio control and crashed the plane. I started to do range checks and found that the shape of the antenna affected the reception dramatically. Straight antenna was best. L shaped antenna had only half of the range. I did not test this configuration you are planning. Finally I did tests with antenna running inside tailboom and the with antenna running outside. There was no difference in range, so I put the antenna into tailboom. But best way to find out is to make a test. Lay your antenna down as you planned, connect receiver and servo, ask somebody to help you and measure the range. Compare with the range with straight antenna. [RCSE] it was hott, very....
...hottt ;-) F3B World Champs report 1: The conditions were brutal - mentally, physically, and even soaringly if that's a word. Every direction you looked, I swear it was downwind. We launched off of lighter and thinner line than I've ever used in my life. The heat and humidity made for very poor soaring conditions - hot and humid = less air molecules per cubic foot of air = poor performance for our models. I've never seen it effect the performance to this degree. No big deal, F3B is man on man right? I know there were some questions about the scores received. I'll address my speed task in this long drawn out report: My first zero - I think it was round 2: I launched at the horn, it was crap. I don't just mean normal crap, but the model could build no tension on launch. The winch spun freely. The model practically raced the chute to the turnaround. I got about 1/2 to 2/3 launch height in comparison to the previous competitors. No biggie, we'll just sit and wait it out. Told my team to hold, and launch at the 2 minute mark - just in case I needed a third launch. Oh great, it got worse... the model wasn't flying, it was falling - quickly. Called for a very quick abort, and relit one more time, very short on working time. Air was still horrible - Entered at about 1/2 height to most of the competition, maybe 27-30 seconds left on the clock, would have had to fly perfectly for a 21/22 second run. This meant nail the turns. First turn - no horn. Oh well, it's a throwout anyway, no point in going back to get it. Might not even finish within the working time anyway. That'll get ya a big fat zero. And btw - it really pisses people off. ;-) The air was so bad, it was humorous. Most of my competitors were afraid to talk to me, they just looked away, assuming I'd be angry I think. Until Gregg Voak from Australia came up to me, we looked at each other, and just started busting up laughing. He looks at me, and emphatically proclaims... in his very heavy Aussie accent - That was the worst [EMAIL PROTECTED] air I've ever seen, Mite! But hey, what are ya gonna do? It's a long contest, ya just keep pluggin' along, right? Just no more mistakes. Next round, I decided to change my juju. Switched models to a model I was much more familiar with - the Warp T. Hey, it worked last time, right? Stepped up to fly speed, the guy in front of me had great air - went 17 I think. It took great air to go 17 at this contest, and nerves of steel. I launched quickly - pretty high. But I wasn't happy with the air on course. Would have probably netted me a low 17, or maybe even a 16 second run if flown well. So naturally... I aborted. As I was coming down, my flap wiper came out of the wing - bitchin! DZ gave me a piece of plastic to put it back in with. The plastic piece was super sharp, and cut the wiper. Took maybe 20 - 30 seconds to put it back in. Then it happened - hey what's that sound? Is that line tension? Is the winch actually bogged down? I launched to the moon, in killer air. 3 or 4 wraps, and I was higher than anyone I'd seen all week. The thermal was in the perfect position on the course. I came back and entered. That's when I got my only 1,000 point speed round for the contest - a fairly nicely flown 15.1 something. (Even if I do say so myself) Since there was no headwind, or crosswind, or... well, wind... we had to fly pretty light to guarantee getting some sort of tow. So even if you were fortunate enough to get a thermal, you weren't heavy enough to really go. 19's were keepers in this contest, with most of the top guys going mid 18's in between the lift or sink. Next round - back up in speed. Had a 17 second launch, and a 16 second run going, so I thought it would be neat to cut another one and net a 21. Still don't know what happened, I didn't think I wasn't even pushing the margins. Just got no horn. I was told later by the helpers that both of my cuts were less than one meter away. One was decribed as inches. These guys were very well trained to not give away anything, and to not push the button until they were certain the model had crossed the base. The term speed lotto was used by some of the competitors. But I still believe that over the course of a long contest, the air will pretty much even out over the competitors. As a competitor, you must optimize every slot. I had my crap, I had my thermal, and all kinds of 18 potential if flown well. My second cut took me out of the running for a first place finish, and I was mentally spent, and it was only round 4. Flew speed conservatively and cleanly for the rest of the comp - too little too late. I'll address the other tasks and the team's World champs from my perspective in a couple of more reports.
