[RCSE] What R You flying?

2005-02-27 Thread Don & Lisa Copley
Daryl,
What are you flying these days in most any given weather situation that
works either by adding ballast or removing ballast for TD/F3J's events?

I got an R/C buddy and I are looking at "moldies" frankly we've given
ourselves a migraine. It seems we started a "Ford" vs. "Chevy" discussion in
the R/C discussions. We don't really want to fly what everyone else is using
in the club. We want to get into the contest for TD & F3J and wiling to put
the time in. Just to be apart of the gang isn't't our game. We know the
airplane we get we need to know it like we know our wives in order to be
competitive.

We've heard Pike's, Sharon's, NYX's, Artimus', etc. It's like the Chinese
alphabet for airplanes...Thoughts? Suggestions?

Finally, when I plunk down $1000 on a ship. I can't go to my wife in 3
months and say "Opps" got the wrong airplane.

Don

[RCSE] Midwestslope.com site has been rebuilt

2005-02-27 Thread Mike Bailey

Well I am not a web designer by any means. When I first set
up my site I made it a pain to update so I have reworked the whole thing. This
was prompted by my new release of several models. As for the new models,
I was able to make it up to Lake Wilson this weekend to test fly my new 60" Cap
232 proto type. I will be producing several different gliders based on full
scale power aerobatic planes. The cap flew very well. The size, airfoil, ect...
are based on the now largely popular 60" warbirds and the performance is right
on par. The weight is around 60 oz for a standard build. Aileron and elevator
authority are very good. I will have pictures posted in the morning and
hopefully a video later this week.I am still producing the 3 meter fox
kits. There is a video if you have not seen it here: http://www.midwestslope.com/fox/video 1.aviI
have started on a 2 meter prototype and if I can get it done by this weekend I
will get to maiden it this weekend. So let me know what you think the
site is at www.midwestslope.comMike

Subject: [RCSE] Nemesis wiring harness

I've been very happy with my flapped Nemesis, now with about 20 good
flights.

I am not at all happy with my wiring harness: I have all four wing servos
wired to a DB-9 plug, but it's really a tight fit. It's just a matter of
time before wire fatigue takes its toll.

I'd like to be able to connect everything when I bolt the wing to the
fuselage. Are there Deans plugs that will do the trick? Or is there some
better system?

TIA,

I know I know practice practice practicebecause they are all comprable but . I have asked this question several times and am now ready to order one so... Just trying to see if there is an avantage of one over the other.  Wing Loading, strength, penetrating capabilities etc

The Deans style connectoer system do not offer ways and means of
adequately mounting their housings.

The system I offer is entirely plug-and-play...as in hands-off during
set-up and breakdown. You also have options such as lead awg (gauge),
etc to custom tailor a system precisely to your needs...

Joe,
I supply a Hoopes Harness "plug and play" harness for the
Nemesis, but I don't offer a "fixed connector arrangement" as
there is little room for this configuration in the Nemesis.
The connector system is small, durable, industrial components, positive
latching, and can't be plugged together improperly.even in the heat
of the battle;-)
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you've got any

No worries Jay, I did not take personal offense in any way--in fact I
completely agree with your analysis of the slippage on RCGroups. In all
honesty, I'm definitely a big part of the problem with the noise in the
Slope forum. It's one of my personal regrets, and I'm trying to address
the issue (i.e. stay on topic more with my posts). I do truly appreciate
your contribution to my Fauxdent effort--apologies if my message come
off in any other way!

My response--which could surely have been worded better--was meant more
as a general commentary on how to maintain quality in our online
resources and definitely not as a personal attack against you. Please
accept my apologies if it didn't read that way. I got hit in the head by
a plane today and perhaps I'm not in my right--not to mention my
RCGroups withdrawal symptoms kicking in (wish I was joking).

Anyways, my theory is that these resources will be as good as we make
them. I know you do your part, I'm trying to make my contribution more
substantial, and I thank everyone else who is doing the same. Hopefully
a little self-policing on RCGroups can save the Slope forum, it's a nice
place and it would be a shame to see it go completely to pot.

As one of the most prolific posters in the Slope forum, I have to take
at least partial responsibility for the rise of "noise" in that forum.

However, in my defense, I also contribute a hell of a lot of "signal" in

I'm still very fond of rec.models.rc.air and rec.models.rc.soaring,
and they're pretty much immune to downtime due to maintenance and
such, though it does seem that fewer and fewer people are
participating, having gone to the web forums instead.
(rec.models.rc.soaring is already pretty much dead, but
rec.models.rc.air still has some life.)

Which is very sad. I still prefer the Usenet format for discussions
of this nature (though mailing lists like this one work OK, but not
quite as well) as the interface is completely under my control, I
don't need to click on things, no advertisements, etc. ... but I guess
eventually I'll have to go where the people are :)

2005-02-27 Thread Stuart A. Hall
I agree that the slope forum is really nice. I go there when the wind
blows from the one precise direction locally that permits slope flying
(NNW) and I get eager to build a slope plane. But the the wind dies or
switches direction and I go back to TD planes.

So just a shout out for the 'Sailplane Talk', which seems like a general
sailplane related forum, much like RCSE, and then there is 'Thermal
Talk', which is mostly beginners talking about recent builds. But like I
said to Mr. Bacus, I am seeing some "household names" showing up in both
forums. The threads on the Allegro-Lite builds are excellent. The new
group for technical detail seems to be the Composites & Fabrication
forum... Mr. Barnes and Mr. Drela are frequent contributors also.

Too bad they are down for maintenance right now. I have been getting a
half-hearted fix by visiting the ad-infested RCUniverse.

I just received my order for pushrods from ACP for both the Soprano and the
Trio. Their service was great. :) The URL is

The pushrods slide quite freely in the outer tubing. To reduce the
friction even further, I coat the rods with an extremely thin layer of Son
of a Gun, an STP product that is sold in automotive stores.

[RCSE] Icon Parts FS and One Needed

2005-02-27 Thread Marc Gellart
First, stuff for sale, price very negotialable, but you pay the shipping.

One Icon F3B center panel with cracked joiner box on the right side, relize
it is really not worth much, but someone might have a need for leading edge
sections or such. Does have the wire harness in it. This panel basically
looks pretty clean, but the crack is on the TE side of the box. White over
green in color.

One set of stabs, white over green in color, no joiners.

Now, I could really use an Icon nose cone if someone has one, any color is
fine.

Re: [RCSE] New videos / RCGroups withdrawals

2005-02-27 Thread James V. Bacus
I agree, the web forums can be really nice for sharing multimedia, I belong
to several corvette forums that go absolutely nuts with that stuff. The
custom Avatars, the custom signatures, making music videos of almost every
event, tons of pictures and photoshop(chopped) images, etc...

I'll try looking at rcgroups again, I have been there several times before
just to read. It hasn't grabbed me yet.

RCgroups has really turned into a great resource for builders
especially, as new methods and techniques can be displayed visually
for us to try. There's a lot of scratch building, especially
with composites, that's going on that just isn't talked about
on the exchange.
If you're just interested in soaring chit-chat, the exchange is
still the best...if you have more specialized interests, especially
building and DLG, RCgroups is the way to go.
For a good example, check out our Supergee thread, part I and II
over there once they're done with their "maintenance".

Gordy has just finished flying this round of the Heathcote Cup Open Thermal
comp. He has his contest requirements for LSF level 3, and is a happy
camper. He flew very well, managing 3 x 1,000 pts (1st place in the round)
and a 947 in another round. He was disappointed in the Aus T.D. rules,
where it states if you lose part of your glider on launch, then it is a zero
score for that round - he lost a canopy. ooops. Came in 7th overall and
would have done much better if not for the zero score. He flew at Carl
Strautins club field yesterday, and commented that he saw a deer 'pad' on
the edge of the field. He then saw a couple of 'deer' laying down. They got
up and turned into what he thought were people. They hopped away, and Gordy
saw his first kangaroos in the wild. Good time had with him, as last year.
He is a good guy and a friend to us down here.
