[RCSE] Re: Carbon Supra #48

2006-02-17 Thread David Register
I'm reminded of some advice Hi Johnson gave me many years ago. We were
making early composite wings (~ 1975, 'Eagle' series). I was curious how
he optimized the strength to weight ratio. Hi's reply was that he made a
wing that he knew was too strong and heavy. Then he made a few more,
taking out a little something each time. When it broke, he put back what
he last took out.

[RCSE] Rubber Duck Antenna

2006-01-31 Thread David Register

From: Ron Quintana [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: [RCSE] Power/Rubber Duck

Anyone had any experience using these in place of the OEM telescoping
antenna?

Yes. ~ 10 years with Futaba Txs (7UGFS and 9C). Haven't had a 'hit' yet.

Is the range loss significant?

No.

Only problems I've seen are the same as with OEM systems - receiver antenna
positioning especially in carbon/kevlar environments. Out of sight range with
3M ships. Good low altitude control with DLGs. Particularly useful (for me)
with DLGs - helps prevent 'bent antenna' syndrome.

There is some loss of signal but not enough to affect range in any way I've
seen. Antenna lobe pattern is different but more favorable for pointing the Tx
at the plane.

Be aware that since these are not OEM, a CD can disallow their use - but I've
not seen that rule invoked over the years.

For the 9C, there's an installation article in the Feb, 2003 RCSD.

[RCSE] Glee

2006-01-30 Thread David Nasatir
While some may enjoy exercising the mastery of their craft, others their
piloting skills and others the challenges of competition, it is
important to remember that many of us participate in RC soaring just for
the glee! Check out this link.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/object/article?f=/c/a/2006/01/30/BAG7DGVJ571.DTLo=0type=printable

Note the use of a plastic water/soda bottle for the pod, the stick for
the boom and the foam wings from a toy store glider. Like the other
components, the rocks are probably available to you locally.

The glee comes from within.

[RCSE] ARFs, Woodies, etc.

2006-01-26 Thread David Register
I've built (assembled?) parts by Phil, wood kits, scratch built
(own-design woodies and all composite) and even foamie electric ARFs
over the last 35 years of modeling. Hope to roll a tailboom or two in a
couple of weeks to complete the cycle. It's all fun. But isn't the REAL
skill what we do with this stuff in the air?

There are those who are fortunate enough to have the time and building
skills to scratch build. Then there are those who barely have time to
make it to the schoolyard to fly. For the latter, suppliers like Phil
and even some of the true ARFs and moldies are a godsend. Seems to me
the emphasis should be on teaching flying skills and enjoyment of same.

I've won a contest or two with scratch builts that were up against
kilo-buck moldies. And lost a whole lot more with moldies that were
beaten by better pilots flying whatever they brought (remember the Rose
Bowl when Joe beat a bunch of us with an EPP 2M that got pre-flighted
the night before?). So it's what you do in the air and how much fun
you're having that really counts.

Just soloed a guy with an EPP electic ARF. That smile of accomplishment
looks to be permanently stuck on his face. Does it matter that he
assembled the ARF or built from a kit? Nope! That huge SEG he's still
wearing is all that counts. And now he wants to go after a competition
DLG and then maybe a 2M. Who knows, maybe scratch building is in his
future? But I'll guarantee he'll never have a moment quite like he had
when he soloed with that ARF.

That's what this hobby is all about. How you get there is secondary.

My two Catahoula's had managed to seek out a rubber maid container with
about 40 Cowboy cookies just made last nite and one of the best batches the

Between the two of them they ate every single cookie (Cowboy cookies were
chocolate chip with oatmeal)...

By the time I got home all that was left was crumbs on the floor.

Now I can't tell you if they would have felt less satisfied had they used a
Picolario to find that container versus just using their nose's to read the
air so I guess this isn't very definitive as to that topic, cuz they looked
pretty satisfied periodkind of like JB after a win with onePicolario

However I can tell you that I would have very much preferred not to have
experienced the experiment at all.

 Hi Guys,
I'm kinda new to this soaring exchange but I'll pop in my tuppence worth
regarding favorite tool, as a builder of scale models [ and dare I say
R.E.S.] currently building a scratch built Riva Super Ariston Mahogany
Runabout boat to 1/4 scale next project a Sky Bench Baby Bowlus. The need
for a plane came about now having seen the add for Great Planes Power
Planer I purchased that item and was pleasantly surprised that it lives up
to the manufactures claims, it will plane balsa/ply/hardwood whatever and
the micro adjustment allows for real precise planing a great tool it only
has one draw back for some one like myself who's hands are following father
times the power switches are mounted on each side and require quite
considerable pressure to keep running. I most certainly recommend it.

[RCSE] Re: LSF - Woodies/Moldies

2005-12-31 Thread David Register

A couple of comments on the woodie/moldie thread:

1) Thanks to the organizers for proposing this event. It should be great
no matter what aircraft are flown. Really looking forward to this one.

2) I think when we talk about woodies or moldies we're may also be
differentiating by performance types and not exclusively by material
types. Differentiating by materials is an obvious way to do it at the
sign-in desk. But in the air, what's really the difference? Woodies tend
to be lower wing loading, minimum sink floaters while moldies tend to
higher loadings with camber changing ability to hunt and then core well.
Neither is 'better' in an absolute sense. They both reflect a flying
style preference and that's great.

I'm also reminded that Muncie can have days of very spotty light lift.
And I'm painfully reminded (frequently) that on those kind of days,
planes like AVAs and Bubble Dancers leave a lot of us moldie guys in the
dust.

Go for it, woodies. Nothing in the rules says they're not capable of
beating anyone if the conditions are right.

[RCSE] Hardy Souls contest, January 1, Tidewater, VA.

2005-12-23 Thread Stack, David
Title: Hardy Souls contest, January 1, Tidewater, VA.

Wanted to make you aware that the Tidewater Model Soaring Society is hosting their 20-somethingest Hardy Souls contest on New Year's Day.

All are welcome to come and fly with us, proof of AMA membership is the only requirement. Pilots meeting to be held at 9:30 EST

You can find additional details, to include a map to the field, on the club web site at: www.soartmss.com

Weather last year couldn't have been much better (at least for the Norfolk area of Virginia) with temperatures approaching 60 degrees, and light winds. No idea what is forecast for this year, but as the name implies, it won't matter...

Past participants include Josh Glaab (US F3J Team alternate on several occasions), Don Richmond aka hilaunch.com (all the way from California!), Herk Stokely (publisher of the Soartech data), and others; so why not make plans to be part of this year's gathering.

Dave

[RCSE] Re: Beginner Radios

2005-12-21 Thread David Register
You guys already hit one of my favorites - one of the three channel
radios (Futaba or Hitec are the ones I know). Things that are useful
include V-tail coupling, servo reversing, FM on something other than the
27MHz band (for flying), double tuned receiver and NiCd batteries. The
latter adds to the cost but is a good investment. I used to be prone to
a more high-end radio as a starter but the cost and performance of the
three channels is very good and they can always be used for RES, or
RE/Throttle, sloping and other fun things over the years.

V-tail coupling on these is a bit primitive - the throws are fixed and
generally split 50/50 between elevator and rudder throw so it's hard to
get enough rudder but still keep the elevator from being too twitchy.
They're OK for flying wings, and great for R/E slopers, many of the Park
Flyers as well as for Aileron/Elevator/Throttle foamie warbirds (I have
one on a foamie Zero electric and it's a blast)

If one knew they were going to be in the hobby for a while, I'd strongly
suggest one of the low end programmable systems. I talked one of my
students into an Optic 6 and never regretted it. Digital trims made it
hard to inadvertently change the trim setup (a major problem for a
newbie when you accidentally bump the conventional trim sliders). End
point adjustment was a major benefit for 'tuning' the plane for the
student's capabilities. Multiple memories made it possible to stick with
one tranny for the next plane or two that came along. Much more
flexibility in V-tail coupling so you can set it up a lot better for V's
and wings.

A bit more up front cost but a good investment for the next several
years. Futaba, JR, Hitec, Airtronics and others all make entry level
programmable systems. Dave Garwwod reviewed an Airtronics unit in RCSD a
while back. The Hitec has been covered in some of the mags. All good stuff!

Just my two cents. Hard to go wrong with a lot of things that are out
there now. If there's a club in the area or a few Old Flying Buddies
that you can hook up with, the local preference probably trumps most
other opinions.

[RCSE] Just a moment?

2005-11-06 Thread David Nasatir

What will be the flight behavior consequence of a very long tail moment?

I have been working on a two meter full house ship of my own design
based upon classic TLAR principles.
To my astonishment, when I attached the wings today, things didn't look
about right at all. The tail moment appears to be much too long.

I will undergo cataract surgery tomorrow and maybe it will look right
after that, but I doubt it.

So I've got this glider with a longer than usual distance from wing
trailing edge to V-tail leading edge. What flight characteristics (due
to this particular factor) should I expect when I launch it?

I believe it was about 1946 when I first realized that there is often a
substantial distance between the way I envision things and the way they
turn out after I have actuallty built them. It doesn't matter too much
(at least to me) however, as I enjoy the process even though the product
is usually so bad that friends have been known to take models away from
me and then return them in a condition so lovely that I am uncomfortable
trying to fly them.

Anyway, what should I expect once the eye heals up and I get up the
courage to launch this thing?

Thanks,

Dave

I love it when you can finish like that. Gives you hope for the next

I recently purchased several large sailplanes from a
friend of a friend. The lot originated from a pilot
who had passed away. I want to gather information on
the sailplanes before I start playing with them, but I
do not recognize one of them.
The Bird of Time is easy to recognize, and the book
that came with the Mystery Ship makes ID easy. But
the third sailplane is unknown to me. It has a 12'7
wingspan, RES, fiberglass fuse. Pictures available
 here:

 http://www.vinceherman.net/tempsailplane/IMG_3588.JPG

I can take more pictures or answer any questions on
the model to help. Thanks in advance.
 Vince

p.s. To see the whole mess piled up in my garage,
alone with the transmitter, histarts, a NIB Bird of
Time kit and a 2 meter Spirit that I got from another
 club member, go here:
 http://www.vinceherman.net/tempsailplane/
 I think I got a good deal. :)

[RCSE] Re: Soaring V1 #6337

2005-09-11 Thread David Register
The UIUC group issued a report which covered trips. Indeed, some of the
Eppler sections do benefit from being 'tripped'. However, the dimensions
and placement of the trip can significantly affect the result.

Following the earlier Eppler work, the Illinois group (Mike Selig and
his folks) developed a number of airfoils that didn't need require
trips. In many cases, adding trips didn't accomplish much other than a
modest drag penalty. The recent work by Mark Drela is optimized for low
Re applications beyond what was done at Illinois (hope that's not
stepping on any toes but it shows in the X-Foil and wind tunnel results).

So basically many of the sections used today really don't need trips and
may lose some performance with them. But many earlier sections (a number
of the Eppler airofils as well as the old NACA 4 and 5 digit sections)
had better low Re performance (typically, low speeds) with trips.

The specific UIUC reference is Volume 3 of Summary of Low-Speed
Airfoil Data, chapter 6, originally published in 1997. The reasons for
tripping the airflow are very nicely discussed in this publication as
well. Airfoils that don't manage the laminar to turbulent transition
well are among the ones that may benefit from a physical trip. The E374
was investigated in the subject report and trips had a significant
response. The SD7037 was also investigated and the trip effect was much
less noticeable.

Subject: Tripping modern airfoils, and why do flaps and spoilers do what they
do?

Bob Dodgson tripped his E214-equipped wings to achieve better
performance. I'm not aware of any other sailplane designers who
recommend this. Does anyone today recommend this as a way to improve
airfoil performance? Was it ever a legitimate idea in the first place?
If it's something that actually works, what kinds of airfoils benefit
most from it?

[RCSE] Re: V-tail

2005-09-08 Thread David Register

Dave you are creeping me out here. Bella Abzug?

Justin -

Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder..

And there's an age at which it's like an old dog chasing a car - what
the heck do you do with it if you ever catch it?

But more to the point - Joe and Don had (have?) an excellent discussion
on V-tail design on the DJ website. Having flown quite a few of both
types, the differences are ones of aestehtics but with the caveats:

- For the same tail moment, the volume coefficients (horizontal and
vertical) really need to be about the same to make a fair comparison. As
Mark noted in a recent post, the euro V-designs tend to be low in the
vertical component of these design values. I've noticed this is in
several 2M euro designs that I've tried and the problem (for me) is too
little vertical volume coefficent (often half of what we'd use in a
normal X-tail) and low dihedral angle. These complement each other to
make the rudder yaw response rather weak as compared to many US designs.
Consequently, my impression is that the 2M ships that are sold as TD in
the US are really converted slopers for which a low rudder volume
coefficient and EDA isn't all that critical. Since the yaw response to
rudder is weak, and the dihedral angle is low, it can be tricky setting
up aileron differential and rudder compensation for coordinated turns
with these ships for TD purposes (again - for me).

- For a V-tail, you don't need much elevator travel but you need a lot
of rudder travel. This seems to be compounded by a weird pitch-yaw
coupling on large 'rudder' type movements in a V. That can require
differential for the V surfaces as well. My impression is this gets more
pronounced if the hinge line is angled significantly.

If you look at the Super-V designs of Mark LeVoe, you'll note that the
horizontal and vertical volume coefficient is about in the mid-range for
conservative X-tail designs. I think for US TD work, most folks have
found the handling of a Super-V to be very good.

Different strokes for different folks. A V is a little more challenging
to set up properly but works fine once you get there.

No offense intended to any euro designers with these comments. Just
personal observations from a limited number of well-crafted ships.

[RCSE] 12V Bench Power Supply

2005-09-02 Thread David Register
A newbie here in town borrowed one of my converted PC power supplies for
charging his electric and then started looking for a new PC supply of
his own. He found a really good deal which I've converted and it works
very well. In our area, used PC supplies are getting harder to find (for
free) and it pains me to pay $20 for a used supply.

This conversion is very easy (see Red's Battery Clinic article at
http://www.rcbatteryclinic.com/) and follows the ATX conversion with the
exception that you only need to ground the PS-On wire to make the supply
work properly. No need for the 'Power Good' line. On this one the PS-On
wire was green on the motherboard connector but it's clearly marked on
the circuit board inside the case.

Supply is a 250W unit from Tiger Direct. Cost is $15 +S/H. Add a couple
of bucks and a little sawing on the case to fit a banana plug
receptacle, clip and shield a few wires and you're done. I've been
running this one for a few days on GP, Sirius AstroFlight and FMA
chargers for NICd, NiMH and LiPos (Tx, Rx and motor packs) with no
problems. Haven't pushed current too hard (couple of amps) but the
supply is rated for 10A so it will probably deliver 8 or so.

Just FYI for those looking for an easy way to get 12V bench power for
your field chargers.

[RCSE] Re: 12V Under the bench.....

2005-09-02 Thread David Register
Yup, that's slick (12V battery on trickle). I use the battery on my
sport winch - stick it under the bench and clamp on chargers as needed.

Forgot to note that the $15 PC supply has a rocker switch for power.
Most PC supplies do not have the switch on the PS.

I've modified my chargers for banana plugs but have also made a banana
plug (female) to battery clip cable (using the clips cut off the
original charger wire). A little more work but allows more convenient
field use.

RS has a cigarette lighter to banana plug connector that's handy. About
5 bucks as I recall. Cheap fuse in the body but it works OK.

[RCSE] Re: ATX Transient

2005-09-02 Thread David Register

The other thought (in addition to the 5V line)

An Astro LiPo charger did the same thing - shuts off the ATX if current
setting is high when you clip on the battery. The trick was to set the
current low initially, then bring it up. The ATX could handle the final
current fine, but not the transient. How about turning on the Orbit Pro
with the ATX off then let the switch from the ATX run everything. That
might minimize the transient and get things going.

- d

I'm using a converted ATX power supply as well and it's great, with one
exception. My Orbit Pro charger has a power switch, and when I turn it
on the power supply shuts down. I've never opened it up, but imagine it
might have a largish capacitor that sucks a largish amount of current
when first turned on. Maybe the power supply sees this current and shuts
off to protect itself.

Weird, but my other chargers, including a GP Triton work great on this
power supply.

 Dan

[RCSE] Re: RCM

2005-08-25 Thread David Register
I'm also among the many who regret the passing of RCM. One of my friends
used to be a copy editor there, way back when it was just getting
started out in San Dimas. It was a great mag, good coverage, good
columns and excellent photo and art work at a time when good color copy
was a rarity in modeling mags.

However, things change. We get the magazines we pay for and printed
media is becoming more expensive all the time. Internet publishing seems
to be on the rise. RCSD's existing format is of that nature.

I would encourage those who feel something's missing to contribute
articles, how-to's, etc. to RCSD and any other format they would like to
support. These publications are for modelers and by modelers. And that
means US!

I've written for mags and done newsletters for over 25 years - wrote
some 60+ columns and articles for RCSD since 1998. In that time I've
found the quickest way to deal with someone who has a storng opinion
about what I've written is to comment:

That's an interesting way to look at it. Why don't you write it up as
an article and submit it to (fill in the publication name).

Most folks bail out at that point. I've only found two cases where that
dialog led to an article or series of articles. Both led to topics that
were very worthwhile.

My point is simply that we all have something to contribute and that
responsibility doesn't lie exclusively with those who do columns for
magazines. If you've got a good idea (and we all do), write it up and
submit it. It takes a certain amount of sweat equity to do that but it's
the only way ideas circulate. Nats coverage on RCSE, for instance, was
way above the call of duty for those guys who did it. Their contribution
is an example of folks putting in the effort to keep all of us informed.
That type of effort is the best way to keep publishing (internet or
otherwise) healthy.

Momma used to say that if you weren't willing to do something about it,
you had no right to complain. Publications REALLY need your input and
any of the ones I've known would love to have the problem of too much
stuff to print.

Sad to see RCM go (and Model Builder before that). We all have a
responsibility to share what we've learned, either at the field, in our
newsletters and publications, or on the net. Thanks to all the folks at
these mags who did so much for all of us. Hopefully a new round of
contributors using new publication formats will continue that legacy.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Yesterday was a bad news/good news kind of a day. Duration was very challenging, both in the morning and afternoon rounds. I was the unfortunate recipient of the wrong time/wrong place award for both duration rounds. Gordon and Mike both maxed out for their duration slots, but both had to work very hard for their maxes. They did some amazing flying in their slots. We had another good round of distance in round five, where we only dropped one lap total for our three flights.
They decided to finish the evening Thursday with speed, which meant that there would be almost zero cycling as there was nothing happening for the previous few duration rounds. This was a good thing for the US team, as we have been cursed with the bad sink award for virtually all of our speed flights, excepting Mike and Gordon in round 1. We redeemed ourselves, with a 16, 17 and 18.

The returning champion Andreas Bohlen has flown extremely well during the contest, and until I saw Andreas Herrig fly, I thought that Bohlen was at the pinnacle of F3B performance. Both fly speed without perceptible mistakes, but Herrig does things with his own design/build plane that does not seem possible.

The German team has been flying with admirable precision, and have the team
award locked up...

depends upon how your plane's configured, but you haven't mentioned anything
about that yet.)

As it happens, I use the spoiler for trailing edge camber and butterfly
switch for crow so, in fact, the three position FLAP switch is currently
not in use. How should I proceed to program it to operate the tow
release on channel 8 (Aux 3) on my Jr XP8103?

[RCSE] JrXP8103 Programming Question (Tow Release)

2005-07-20 Thread David Nasatir
1) What is the recommended action for operating the tow release
mechanism, (currently on channel 8)?
2) In the absence of advice against this practice, I would like to open
the release by activating the timer switch on my Jr XP8103. What would
be the appropriate mixing instructions to do that?

2005-07-13 Thread David Zucker
Just wanted to add that Steve Condon ,Tim Cone and I flew as the other
team against our boys Saturday and Sunday and they pretty much put us to
shame (well Steve held his own). Joe flew consistently smooth speed runs
in the 15 to 17 second range with Gordon and Mike right in there.
Distance was really good with good thermals blowing through consistently.
Estrellas seem to be the preferred weapon of choice. Joe's experimenting
with a Europa (sp.?) and seemed close to getting it dialed in by Sunday.

We have a great team this year and I hope everything goes well for them.
Thanks for the flying lessons you guys.

Re: [RCSE] Insanity 3.7 - shameless plug for Sal

2005-07-01 Thread David Zucker

Daryl Perkins wrote:

Hey Guys,

After the Spring Fling, I've been getting a lot of
private emails regarding the Insanity 3.7, so I
thought I'd post a little about the model. With my
broken full scale planes this year, I haven't had a
chance to head to So Cal to fly the contest circuit,
but I had really wanted to, because this thing is like
cheating. Now that I've got some contest time on the
model, I'm more comfortable talking about it than last
year. It's so easy to fly, and even easier to land.

Mine weighs in at 83 ounces, but I am using some super
heavy stabs that I bagged at home with some carbon I
had laying aroundIf I were using the stabs from
Sal, it would take 3-4 ounces out of the model. Even
at 83 ounces, the model feels almost too light for me.
It flies soo slooow. The wing loading
is under 9 ounces/ft. Even though it's light, due to
the span, it still covers ground quite well, and
because of the light loading, lands almost stupid
slow. The moments on the model are quite generous,
(lng tail boom) so even at very slow speeds on
final, it tracks quite nicely.

Stats:

Span - 145
Area - Don't remember (I recall 1350 ish)
Section - A JW section - TDtry19 (same as the Fusion
section)

I've only flown it in Majors. It's the model I flew at
the Nats last year (although with a completely
re-shaped and re-tooled fuse - much prettier and
lighter now), I flew it at Visalia, SWC, and now
Spring Fling. For AMA style TD, I wouldn't fly
anything else.

I believe Sal is selling them, although due to the
labor in them, Phil is whining about making the wings.
So there may be a bit of a delay. There is a lot of
work in them. Makes it a bit pricey. The wings are
turning out to be super strong - much to the shagrin
of the SVSS winch crews. I kept breaking lines tapping
all the way up tow. Sorry guys! I was tappin'...

It's very lively for the span - if it wasn't it would
make me crazy. Rolling circles are fun, inverted
flight is hands off, outsides are tight... it's just
fun to fly.

And most importantly, it's not a 2 meter. Chuck would
like it he can see it ;-)

If you're in Muncie, come by and check it out. I'll
have it out for Open Class.

See y'all at the Nats!

Re: [RCSE] Fw: Gas to reach 3 dollars a gallon

2005-04-04 Thread David Nasatir
import from the Middle East) and could not
satisfy the demand that would be created if a significant portion of
the USA's consumer base were to shun all the largest oil companies,
unless they bought up the output of the companies we were supposed to
be avoiding in the first place (or, alternatively, unless they raised
their prices sky-high).

Moreover, the idea that oil companies sell gasoline only through their
branded service stations, and therefore if you don't buy gasoline from
Shell-branded gas stations you're not sending money to Shell (or, by
extension, the Middle East), is wrong. Oil companies sell their output
through a variety of outlets other than their branded stations; as
well, by the time crude oil gets from the ground into our gasoline
tanks, there's no telling exactly where it came from. (A good deal of
the crude oil purchased from Russia
http://abcnews.go.com/sections/world/DailyNews/iraq010720_cooley.html,
for example, is oil from Iraqi fields sold through Russian middlemen.)

As the /St. Louis Post-Dispatch/ noted:
Economics Prof. Pat Welch of St. Louis University says any boycott of
bad guy gasoline in favor of good guy brands would have some
unintended (and unhappy) results.

Although foreign relations wax and wane, Welch says, the law of supply
and demand is set in stone. To meet the sudden demand, he says, the
good guys would have to buy gasoline wholesale from the bad guys, who
are suddenly stuck with unwanted gasoline.

So motorists would end up buying Arab oil anyway and paying more for
it, because they'd be buying it at fewer stations.

And yes, oil companies do buy and sell from one another. Mike Right of
AAA Missouri says, If a company has a station that can be served more
economically by a competitor's refinery, they'll do it.

Right adds, In some cases, gasoline retailers have no refinery at
all. Some convenience-store chains sell a lot of gasoline -- and buy
it all from somebody else's refinery.

St. Louis University's Welch says, The e-mail presupposes that you
know who the supplier is, and that's not always the case.
Finally, what this scheme proposes is merely a symbolic solution
rather than a practical one, because even if the USA stopped importing
oil from the Middle East, other countries will still purchase it.
(Japan alone, for example, generally buys as much or more oil from
countries such as Saudi Arabia and Kuwait than the USA does.)

Complex problems rarely lend themselves to simple, painless answers.
Simply shifting /where/ we buy gasoline isn't nearly as good a
solution as the much tougher choice of sharply curtailing the /amount/
of gasoline we buy.

You guys might really want to pay attention to this as
they are now saying that gas is going to hit the $3.00 mark! (Was
on the nightly news 3/9/05). WHERE TO BUY YOUR GAS, THIS IS
VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW. READ ON-- Gas rationing in the 80's
worked even though we grumbled about it. It might even be good for
us! The Saudis are boycotting American goods. We should return
the favor. An interesting thought it to boycott their GAS.
Every time you fill up the car, you can avoid putting more money into
the coffers of Saudi Arabia. Just buy from gas companies that
don't import their oil from the Saudis. Nothing is
more frustrating than the feeling that every time I fill-up the
tank, I am sending my money to people who are trying to kill me, my
family, and my friends. I thought it might be
interesting for you to know which oil companies are the best to
buy gas from and which major companies import Middle Eastern oil :

Chevron/Texaco. 144,332,000 barrels Exxon

[RCSE] Stylus- Pike Flap to Elevator Mix Quandry

2005-03-25 Thread David Zucker
Ok, This is the problem. As Gordy earlier stated the Pike has a
bellcrank with an unusually long arm at the pushrod side compared to the
pivot side. The problem this has created, as well as putting more load
on my 368 servo, is it doesn't allow for enough down mix to be generated
at the end of the flap travel. It seems like it gets behind the mix
curve. With every other glider I've owned I always had too much elevator
at the end of Flap travel and this was easily adjusted out with the 2nd
mix for elevator to flap.
Now, my understanding is the 2nd mix point is a % of the first mix so
how do I get say a 120% of elevator travel for 2nd mix. I only run about
75 degrees of flap travel and don't want to back that off any further.
My elevator EPA is set at as much as is possible with out making the
pitch sensitivity more than most would like to handle ( with the
exception of Daryl barely move the stick Perkins.) I did try setting the
EPA to 150% just to see what happened and it added only about a degree
of addition el. travel at full flap. Hardly enough to solve the problem.
Also adding more compensation to the first mix may fix the end of travel
problem but it has too much compensation for the first half of travel.
I hate having to thumb in down elevator ten feet from the LZ.

If the 2nd mix is a percentage of the 1st mix I don't know if that will
help. But I'll try it and let you know.

Re: [RCSE] Stylus- Pike Flap to Elevator Mix Quandry

2005-03-25 Thread David Zucker
Jon Stone wrote:
David,
The spoiler suggestion is one good solution I have used before. Seems sometimes the radio just does not give you all the available throw.

The caveat of this approach is to make sure there is some down elevator throw
left over, so you are able to dork the plane in, if needed. On one of my
planes years ago, I had to pull the flap partially in, to get enough down
deflection to drive the plane to the nail on final.

Now, my understanding is the 2nd mix point is a % of the first mix so

Are you sure? I have never heard that one before. I thought the 2nd mix # was
independent of the first.
How about drilling another hole in the elevator horn, closer to the pivot
point? That would address all of the issues you discussed (force on servo,
enough throw, etc). I realize this may not be easy,
Regards,
Jon Stone

Lachowski suggested a longer horn at the servo. Since the Pike has a
full flying stab and can't be adjusted on the aft end.I'm already
running a long horn at the elevator but I might be able to fit another
1/8in.in the fuse.
I pretty sure I'm right about the % issue.
Spoiler comp may be the only solution. It's the last thing I was going
to try.
Since I only need a few degrees of additional down with full flap to
maintain a nice glide slope, I'll still have plenty of down for the
infamous dork, only if necessary of course :-)

Just tried additional spoiler mix and it gives me a greater endpoint
with full flaps.
I'll test it tomorrow. The problem is I have a perfect glide slope with
54% on the first mix, But now that I've increased the EP I'll have to
cut back on the first mix to maintain that same glide slope which, if my
assumption is correct about the % of 2nd mix to first, (and I'm not 100%
positive of that assumption)will also affect the 2nd mix. Whew! too much
splainin'

Let you know tomorrow how it turns out.
Thanks,
David

I call it the Pike landing /hump/.

When you push the elevator to stick the nose on the spot, the flaps
being down, get lifty when you push the nose over, causing about a 3'
over shoot on the spot.

Most guys talk about pulling the flap off just prior to landing, I find
that too hard to think about. I hear the same thing from Icon and Sharon
owners.

Is that what you mean?

Sorry Gordy,
I dump the flaps off when I push elevator. My minor ballooning problem
occurs about 10 to 15 ft out when I go to add the last bit of flap to
slow the glider to it's min stall speed.

I knew I was going to have a hard time explaining this one.

[RCSE] Thanks to Anonymous Spotter!

2005-03-14 Thread David Nasatir
I want to thank the dad of the visitor from the San Diego area who was
flying at Vollmer Peak in Berkeley, California this morning. Not only
did you make it possible for me to fly by doing an excellent job of
launching my 3M Synergy 91 into what the records show to have been a
48mph gust on a day with steady winds at 28mph. you also made it
possible for me to fly another day by pointing out the tree I clipped on
my landing approach and the likely spot where the plane might be found.
You were absolutely right on!!

The retrieval was relatively straightforward but I did have to give it
some thought. How much was it worth to me, I wondered, to get an
absolutely certain case of poison oak rash? I discounted the
possibility that the local venomous snake population was active yet even
though temperatures had been in the '70's. I knew however, that I would
have to make my way through a serious thicket of broom without a
machete and the likelihood of my falling a way down the slope was real,
as well, and making it back up without doing any further damage to the
model was going to be a problem.

All went well, however, and I hope the TekNu treatment will ward off
the rash.

Next time I will follow one of the mantra of my mentor, Martin, and
ballast, ballast, ballast. Had I done so, I think I might have made
the landing without having been blown into the tree on final approach.

Anyway, thanks to the anonymous spotter. My bad for failing to
introduce myself other than to ask if it was OK to turn on Channel
38...and failing to get your name (and your dad's) in return.

So I am in the lifty New Zeland air yesterday, 14mins left for my LSF4 one

I have a couple of options:
Give up and land.
Swap packs
Turn off the tx and attempt a mini fast charge to finish out the flight (if
I had PCM for hold)
BUT
what if I didn't have a battery problem?
I just wanted to set the TX on the ground or hand it to someone while I had
a drink or put on my hat or some sun screen.
Does the flight cancel when I am not in possession of the TX, or the TX is
off and I am not controling the model any more?
Would I have qualified for my one hour if the TX died and the model flew off
to Australia?
How about Tazmania?
or to McDonalds?
Would I have truly achieved one hour if I was not in control of the model
and TX the entire time of the flight...by the rules...AND the spirit?
Just a little research for an upcoming RCSD article...By the way if you have
not downloaded this months RCSD,,,you are totally missing out!

Re: [RCSE] Rare earth magnets as wing retention devices?

2005-03-02 Thread David Nasatir
Is there an easy way to compare the shear strength of a magnetic wing
hold down with that of a nylon bolt without actually doing the physical
testing?

Martin Usher wrote:
I have a question. Do two apposing magnets generate twice the force
or should you use a small low weight steal attraction plate? (John and
Linda)

Two magnets will grip a lot stronger than a magnet and steel plate. If
the magnets are set up so that both poles are used (small horseshoe
type) then the grip will be very strong, possibly too strong. (If you
overdo it you may have problems pulling the wing off without damaging
something.)

Industrial magnets have a mechanism to pry the magnet away from what's
attracting it -- you only have to move it a short way to
significantely reduce the attraction.

[RCSE] Breakaway fuse?

2005-02-28 Thread David Nasatir
Is there any virtue to designing a fuse to break in a desired spot? How
would I do that?

I am scaling up a favorite, but long gone 60 to 2M. The fuselage is
built up balsa. The original tended to break due to my landing
style. I am reinforcing the new one from the nose to a point behind the
wing saddle but at that point, the construction gets lighter. I suspect
I will experience some broken fuselage landings as a consequence.

Is there a way to construct the fuse (basic built up balsa box with
longerons on the corners of the square) so that it will absorb the
energy of a bad landing by coming apart in a pre-planned fashion so that
I can simply reassemble (no glue) and launch again?

Where I fly and my general lack of skill raise the likelhood of
destructive landings and...no matter how much I might practice, I don't
see that changing.

Thanks.
