will bring the RV out and pick it up after the contest. Can someone

It looks like Ben had to practice his high jump on the last landing.
Just missed coming down on his glider. Also appears he didn't dump his

Check it out.

[RCSE] Re: [pismobeachsoaring] 9303 PC Data transfer

2008-05-29 Thread David Zucker

Dan,
Not DataSafe2. This is PC Data Transfer. Part # JRPA310 through Horizon.
This is a brand new system for saving, manipulating and exchanging data
via your computer with the ability to send
the data in an e-mail. So far it's worked flawlessly. It's version 0.1
so that tells you they may be improving it's function
in the future.JR announced this back in February. I called the LHS owner
and he placed an order for 2 in March.
The release date kept getting pushed back but it's finally appeared. I
like it so far.

Dan Field wrote:

Is this DataSafe 2 ?I guess I could go and look up the PN.I
used to save my 8303 with DS2 just fine. At that time it would not
work with the 9303 but there is new software to run the 9303.
Unfortunately , I can 't get it to work. 3 or 4 emails and phone
calls with Horizon Tech Support and they can't help me.

I have tried many things, numerous re-installs. It won't even fire
up and recognize the 9303 and though right now I don' t recall the
exact error, Horizon Tech's have no idea what the error means.

I still have lots of room for more so far. But more importantly I
would like to save em all some where just in case I loose the memory
one day. I would hate to start over.

My first thought was to step into its path and catch it. My second thought

accelerating as it traveled. Of course the battery was dead so I had no
control. At about 20 feet it pulled out of the dive, flew down the abandoned
street, over the first house on the right, made a left turn and was headed
directly back to me. I was mesmerized by the scene and could not move. The
model settled to the ground in the cul de sac and slid to the curb by my feet!

type same as our open gliders. Everythings working properly but when I

dialed it back from 95 to zero to eliminate land mode but the throttle
won't work. I tried it with my 777 receiver and it works fine with the
land mode disengaged. Any way to make it work with the electron 6 or
will I need 7 channels or more?

Any suggestions are welcome.

Groundhog day #5...

The US team is currently in 3rd place overall, but with a very precarious lead
over the fourth place swiss. There was a lot of rain this morning, so we
didn't get started until about 2PM today.

Yesterday was a bad news/good news kind of a day. Duration was very challenging, both in the morning and afternoon rounds. I was the unfortunate recipient of the wrong time/wrong place award for both duration rounds. Gordon and Mike both maxed out for their duration slots, but both had to work very hard for their maxes. They did some amazing flying in their slots. We had another good round of distance in round five, where we only dropped one lap total for our three flights.
They decided to finish the evening Thursday with speed, which meant that there would be almost zero cycling as there was nothing happening for the previous few duration rounds. This was a good thing for the US team, as we have been cursed with the bad sink award for virtually all of our speed flights, excepting Mike and Gordon in round 1. We redeemed ourselves, with a 16, 17 and 18.

The returning champion Andreas Bohlen has flown extremely well during the contest, and until I saw Andreas Herrig fly, I thought that Bohlen was at the pinnacle of F3B performance. Both fly speed without perceptible mistakes, but Herrig does things with his own design/build plane that does not seem possible.

The German team has been flying with admirable precision, and have the team
award locked up...

Gotta go,

[RCSE] F3B team practice last weekend

2005-07-13 Thread David Zucker
Just wanted to add that Steve Condon ,Tim Cone and I flew as the other
team against our boys Saturday and Sunday and they pretty much put us to
shame (well Steve held his own). Joe flew consistently smooth speed runs
in the 15 to 17 second range with Gordon and Mike right in there.
Distance was really good with good thermals blowing through consistently.
Estrellas seem to be the preferred weapon of choice. Joe's experimenting
with a Europa (sp.?) and seemed close to getting it dialed in by Sunday.

We have a great team this year and I hope everything goes well for them.
Thanks for the flying lessons you guys.

Re: [RCSE] Insanity 3.7 - shameless plug for Sal

2005-07-01 Thread David Zucker

Daryl Perkins wrote:

Hey Guys,

After the Spring Fling, I've been getting a lot of
private emails regarding the Insanity 3.7, so I
thought I'd post a little about the model. With my
broken full scale planes this year, I haven't had a
chance to head to So Cal to fly the contest circuit,
but I had really wanted to, because this thing is like
cheating. Now that I've got some contest time on the
model, I'm more comfortable talking about it than last
year. It's so easy to fly, and even easier to land.

Mine weighs in at 83 ounces, but I am using some super
heavy stabs that I bagged at home with some carbon I
had laying aroundIf I were using the stabs from
Sal, it would take 3-4 ounces out of the model. Even
at 83 ounces, the model feels almost too light for me.
It flies soo slooow. The wing loading
is under 9 ounces/ft. Even though it's light, due to
the span, it still covers ground quite well, and
because of the light loading, lands almost stupid
slow. The moments on the model are quite generous,
(lng tail boom) so even at very slow speeds on
final, it tracks quite nicely.

Stats:

Span - 145
Area - Don't remember (I recall 1350 ish)
Section - A JW section - TDtry19 (same as the Fusion
section)

I've only flown it in Majors. It's the model I flew at
the Nats last year (although with a completely
re-shaped and re-tooled fuse - much prettier and
lighter now), I flew it at Visalia, SWC, and now
Spring Fling. For AMA style TD, I wouldn't fly
anything else.

I believe Sal is selling them, although due to the
labor in them, Phil is whining about making the wings.
So there may be a bit of a delay. There is a lot of
work in them. Makes it a bit pricey. The wings are
turning out to be super strong - much to the shagrin
of the SVSS winch crews. I kept breaking lines tapping
all the way up tow. Sorry guys! I was tappin'...

It's very lively for the span - if it wasn't it would
make me crazy. Rolling circles are fun, inverted
flight is hands off, outsides are tight... it's just
fun to fly.

And most importantly, it's not a 2 meter. Chuck would
like it he can see it ;-)

If you're in Muncie, come by and check it out. I'll
have it out for Open Class.

See y'all at the Nats!

DP let me fly it at Visalia last year. Incredibly low approach speeds
with outstanding tracking and rudder response on final.
I meant to ask you Daryl how it fared with the HIGH winds last weekend?
Obviously quite well. Ballasted?

Numerous big name pilots landing WAY downwind. I

Sunday opened up with little to no wind, and very
normal conditions for Davis. Air was plentiful and big

Special thanks to all the SVSS crew, and the numerous

Thanks to JT and Scott Meader for Co-CDing this thing.
Thanks to Dudley for staying in the trailer keeping

Hey D,

Last 3 out of 4 times I've been to the Spring Fling were windy as hell.
The usual ritual for the windy sink conditions was to launch and head
straight for the row of trees to the west and do some wave surfing.
Also, The last Spring Fling I went to Bobby McGowan thermaled his image
about 5 feet off the ground for the last 4 minutes of his sink cycle
flight. The guy is just amazing to watch. I knew Bobby would flying with
a vengeance after his last round mishap at the Fresno Classic(that's the

[RCSE] Stylus- Pike Flap to Elevator Mix Quandry

2005-03-25 Thread David Zucker
Ok, This is the problem. As Gordy earlier stated the Pike has a
bellcrank with an unusually long arm at the pushrod side compared to the
pivot side. The problem this has created, as well as putting more load
on my 368 servo, is it doesn't allow for enough down mix to be generated
at the end of the flap travel. It seems like it gets behind the mix
curve. With every other glider I've owned I always had too much elevator
at the end of Flap travel and this was easily adjusted out with the 2nd
mix for elevator to flap.
Now, my understanding is the 2nd mix point is a % of the first mix so
how do I get say a 120% of elevator travel for 2nd mix. I only run about
75 degrees of flap travel and don't want to back that off any further.
My elevator EPA is set at as much as is possible with out making the
pitch sensitivity more than most would like to handle ( with the
exception of Daryl barely move the stick Perkins.) I did try setting the
EPA to 150% just to see what happened and it added only about a degree
of addition el. travel at full flap. Hardly enough to solve the problem.
Also adding more compensation to the first mix may fix the end of travel
problem but it has too much compensation for the first half of travel.
I hate having to thumb in down elevator ten feet from the LZ.

David,
The spoiler suggestion is one good solution I have used before. Seems sometimes the radio just does not give you all the available throw.

The caveat of this approach is to make sure there is some down elevator throw
left over, so you are able to dork the plane in, if needed. On one of my
planes years ago, I had to pull the flap partially in, to get enough down
deflection to drive the plane to the nail on final.

Now, my understanding is the 2nd mix point is a % of the first mix so

Are you sure? I have never heard that one before. I thought the 2nd mix # was
independent of the first.
How about drilling another hole in the elevator horn, closer to the pivot
point? That would address all of the issues you discussed (force on servo,
enough throw, etc). I realize this may not be easy,
Regards,
Jon Stone

Lachowski suggested a longer horn at the servo. Since the Pike has a
full flying stab and can't be adjusted on the aft end.I'm already
running a long horn at the elevator but I might be able to fit another
1/8in.in the fuse.
I pretty sure I'm right about the % issue.
Spoiler comp may be the only solution. It's the last thing I was going
to try.
Since I only need a few degrees of additional down with full flap to
maintain a nice glide slope, I'll still have plenty of down for the
infamous dork, only if necessary of course :-)

Just tried additional spoiler mix and it gives me a greater endpoint
with full flaps.
I'll test it tomorrow. The problem is I have a perfect glide slope with
54% on the first mix, But now that I've increased the EP I'll have to
cut back on the first mix to maintain that same glide slope which, if my
assumption is correct about the % of 2nd mix to first, (and I'm not 100%
positive of that assumption)will also affect the 2nd mix. Whew! too much
splainin'

Let you know tomorrow how it turns out.

Easier than I thought.
Nothing but the battery required for the trainer radio. No RF needed. I
just loaded both radios with the same glide card and memory card setup.
In the menu under trainer you set master on your radio, slave on the
trainer radio. Also set the Spoiler-Stk setting to master, or slave if
they're ready for landing.
Next go to the Switches (SW) in the menu and assign whatever switch you
like to shut off the trainer system, otherwise the trainer radio still
has some input. Not good if your kid continues to fidget with the stick
while your landing.

Re: [RCSE] SWC Results - Landing Tasks

2003-02-06 Thread David Zucker
John,

If the flaps being deployed caused a spinnaker effect wouldn't the wind be
traveling fast enough to be flowing backwards across the wing thus making
your glider drop from the sky like a rock. Flaps fully deployed should allow
your glider to fly at it's slowest possible airspeed regardless of wind
direction which is also the slowest possible ground speed for downwind
landings.

From the department of statistical analysis...

There were 700 landings attempted at the SWC.

 483 had a zero
 135 had a 25
 62 had a 50
 20 had a 75
 0 had (or tried) a 100

A petri dish has a side to it; it's obvious that we could have used that.

Personally I enjoyed watching people throw flaps downwind and have the
same
effect of a boat throwing out the spinnaker. The plane would begin to
speed
 up.

Mike Reagan pointed out something to me that I didn't figure out till the
5th round. Put your plane down on the time. Due to the triathalon scoring
the penalty on either side of the target time is extreme. If you are off
by
5 seconds, that is 35 points.

I was off by a few seconds compensating for the downwind. Attempting a
landing at that point isn't really worth it! If you had just put your
plane
down anywhere on the field, on the buzzer, and you made your time, you
would
 have been in 10th place.

  Dave,

The landing task looked like an 8-foot petri dish with 3 different kinds
of
fungus growing in it. In the upper right corner there was a 3 foot
diameter patch of what looked to be athlete's foot that was worth 50
points. In the lower right corner was a 2-foot growth of what may have
been trench mouth, worth 75 points. In the lower left corner was an
itty-bitty circle, well under a foot in diameter, that was most
certainly
ergot. It was worth 100 points. Anywhere in the big circle but out of
the
smaller circles was worth 25 points.

As far as I know, nobody got the 100. Upwind (which happened about 5%
of
the contest) the 50 and 75 were doable, although judging the slide in
that
cement with occasional soft spots that the AZ folks call turf was iffy.
Downwind or crosswind, which was all of the rest of the time, you just
slammed 'er in there and hoped the skeg would keep you out of the safety
  fence.

Yea it's all Pilot pilot pilot for sure but I really don't like the way
some
of these XLT models fly (yes, I sell these and am behind their lay up

so it's partially my fault) but they are not really the models for me.
Some
guys love 'em and do very well in competition and they are remarkable
models
but I like my Artemis better at 68oz than 57oz. It grooves better, tracks
better and launches better. Lands better if your approach speed isn't
perfect. It seams to thermal the same but it does range better and it gets
to the lift sooner at a higher altitude. That's all good. The NYX is even
 better.

The quest for all out lightness is strange because the guys looking for
the
lightest models hardly ever ballast them. I had a customer come over 3
times
and weigh every part in every color to get the lightest version he
possibly
could. He never was happy with it. He asked me what to do and I said get a
6oz lead weight and Goop it to the CG. I got a strange look, I don't know
if
he tried but that would have fixed it.

How does it go? I've never reached a thermal I couldn't climb in.

light weight Addiction has been used to win and place very high in most of

Man on man flying is defiantly the way to go.

This may be true more than you suspect :-)

First I will add my thanks to the club for a good weekend and for the
guts
to fly man on man. Great job guys!!! BTW. Thanks for the ass whipping
 Manny!

Man on man flying is defiantly the way to go. Everyone I talked to liked
the
idea and had a few suggestions (listed below) The IESC flying site has
some
very tough air, if you zigged when you should have zagged you found
yourself
at 1/2 launch height in short time.. The contest used retrievers and 4
winches for 5 man groups, sometimes the last guy in the group launched 1
1/2
to 2 minutes behind the first guy and the professional sandbaggers took
full
advantage of it. When the air is that fickle 1 minute is enough time to
figure out who NOT to follow. Short line were not a problem but you did
need
 a good launch set up.

The contest was defiantly biased towards soaring with a max of 5 landing
 points possible.

The contest was also a triathlon scoring thrown in for fun. The first
round
was a 3 minute bell curve straight up.

 What I heard for suggestions:
 * Landing points could be higher but more importantly define a tighter
landing area. If you don't define a landing area then guys are landing all
over the place from all directions. At this contest inside the 1/4 mile
track would be a good landing area. Outside the landing area would receive
no points. It would be safer and more controlled.
 * Drop the triathlon, go with all 10 minute man on man flights.
 * More winches, the retrievers worked and pilots were launched as soon as
possible with the manpower available. Without retrievers you can get the
group up faster but you also need more help shagging lines. If you have
the
space between winches then retrievers are a good idea. At our field we
can't
spread out wide enough to keep the bow from the retriever line out of the
next pilots way so you need to wait for the retriever to tighten the line
before the next pilot can launch. Worse in a cross wind.

At HSS we will put some of these suggestion into play so if your July 7th
Sunday is open come on out.

Was there much of guys chasing the leader around
 the field, or did
everyone try to find their own air? If it's at all
 like the IHLGF, I'm
always surprised how little poaching actually takes
 place. You have
 less
time to decide in hand launch, and 25' can make a big
 difference, but I
would think that with good launches there would be the
 opportunity to
 just
 try and cover the leader.

The launch lines were quite short, and the winches
easily stalled - not much launch height. The air was
brutal - light disorganized lift with BIG sink. I was
not instantly comfortable on any of my flights.
(Except the 3) There was a bit of herd mentality, but
if you wanted to make your times, you needed to break
away from the pack. I think only the top 3 made all
their times - and Cohn turned an 8 minute on a 10
minute task into a 1,000. (So actually only 2 of the
 top 3 made their times)

I was trying to figure out if this would have been the
case had the contest NOT been held man on man. I think
many more people would have made their times had it
been held in a normal contest format. There would
have been planes in the air to read and cover. Or to
read and go the other way.

The contest definitely emphasized soaring skills - it
was more fun than the typical steer and stabs we
 normally fly in.

Thanks again to ISS for trying something new - it was
 a hoot!

[RCSE] Need F3B winch

2002-02-07 Thread David Zucker

First I'd like to agree with Daryl on noticing that
F3B seems to be gaining popularity( about time ). I spoke with several pilots at
SWC who are looking to enter or re-enter this facet of soaring. Who better than
the world champs to help out here. As a newbie to F3B I'm in need of equipment.
I'm hoping to find an F3B winch that has been gathering dust in someone's garage
and know they can be pricey (take it easy on me guys).
We're trying to set up some practice sessions
through CVRC this spring and summer and I'd be glad to keep anyone interested in
helping or flying updated on the situation.

Re: [RCSE] San Joaquin Valley slope soaring?

2001-11-30 Thread David Zucker

Hi Paul,

We have a great slope sight called Hanglider Hill about 10 minutes east of
Bakersfield I've been flying slope at for 23 years now. You need NW
prevailing winds and lately with the storm systems its been mostly SE. I
just finished a Carbon Millenium And am itching to set it up. I can give you
wind updates if you need and would be glad to show you the sight. Depending
on your location and the type of flying you like. I can give you several
sites from Fresno to Tehachapi. Tehachapi would be the extreme as the winds
haul ass up the pass but is a great sight if you have something sleek and
heavy.

 Hey there...

Sadly its been 20 years since I last flew an R/C glider. Lately I
have been reminiscing badly and finally got an old plane down off the
shelf. Some new radio gear just arrived... the Monokote is
repaired... batteries are charging and I'm ready to go, except...
years ago I moved to Central California!

Can anyone tell me of some potential slope soaring spots around
Fresno or Bakersfield? Tahachapi or Gorman maybe? It seems the guys
around here use hi-starts and fly in Farmer John's field. That is
not my scene! I need some grassy slopes and afternoon winds just
like the old days in Malibu and Thousand Oaks.

Thanks for any advice you might send my way,

 slip

I challenge all to post a picture of a sailplane uglier then this one.
