Re: [RCSE] switch failure

2008-02-01 Thread Brian Chan
I just do the KISS(Keep It Simple, S7up1d) thing, wiggle the sticks(
and see the response) before you go!! Haven't failed yet. I did have
battery failure, but not the switch. I did forget to turn them off,
is that count?

Brian

How about a bright LED or strobe light inline with the switch. Mounted under
the wing, even if you don't do the hookup your self, you always look at the
hook.

Re: [RCSE] Bright color welded ring

2008-01-25 Thread Brian Chan

errr...what's wrong with putting a name on the parachute or launch harness?

You can get some chain links and power paint them.

Brian

Does anyone know of a source of 1 inch welded steel rings which have
been anodized in some bright eye catching color? The guys are
always picking up the wrong ring or end of the launch harness and
standing there confused. It would be really convenient to say
"the red one is the right one!"

Many thanks, Jim

When sitting around discussing a new or different sailplane design, often
one will hear phrases like, "It launches like a __." Or, "It ranges
out like a _."
Or, "It hangs like a _." Or even, "It lands like a _."

Once a sailplane is mentioned in one of those scenarios, that sailplane
becomes a "benchmark."

Here is a possible list of "benchmark" sailplanes through the years:

What I find interesting why is the Supra considered the "bench mark" ? who is
the soaring lord who made this decree?

The Supra is the most documented sailplane since it's release to the public,
with it's many issues depending what serial number you have. I can not agree
that fits a standard for "bench mark" status.

-I went with the Onyx Jw because I thought it performed about like a

What I find interesting is that the Supra is considered the 'bench
mark' and then there are the others...cheaper, but with some feature
that makes them...better? worth more? almost as good for the cost?

There are a lot of reasons to chose something other than the ships that
are most proven and popluar, cost being one but in fact the cost is a
few lawn mowings or driveway shovelings extra cash away from each
other.

The number one reason to get something other than the 'bench mark'
ship?
Because you want to try something else...it makes the hobby that much
more fun for you.

Second best reason...because IF you enter a contest flying the same
ship as the majorityyou are left with one less excuse for not
having done as well as they all did. Flying the same design as the
group can make Man On Man more about the pilot. Maybe takes a little
more guts :-)

Third Reason...because you still believe that a certain model's foil or
weight or span offers some advantage that will tip the time or landing
points your way over the other poor saps stuck with that that 'bench
mark' sailplane.

so if you fly behind a tree and the radio doesn't have "last frame hold" you
could completely go out of control. real world use will decide if this is an
issue or not, but the bottom line is that high frequencies at low power have
poor
range and there is a lot of stuff on 2.4ghz to screw up your signal when the
primary
signal is lost.

But just like PCM, even if it holds the last frame of good signal,
you need to be sure plane is straight and level. If the last good
command was a steep right turn, you will auger into the ground before
it fly out of the shadow of the tree or whatever between you and the
plane.

designed the programming.

It is only a lowly 7 ch tx, it would not do a whole heck of a lot
over the DX-6. I like my DX-6 for the park flyers and aerial
photographing. I can fly (safer) in any location, without worry
getting hit.

I was surprised to see they come out with only 7 channels. A beginner
would buy one but any hard core modeler will think that is a waste of
money to get only 7 ch. I would buy it if it has 9 or 10 ch. I am
running out of channels even with the Fut 9C.

Anyway, if 50 % of the people jump on that, the 72MHz will be much
more open, thus less interferences.

2006-10-19 Thread Brian Chan
What happens when you have to do a time like 6:53? Such as a
contest where an add up "total flight time" occurs. Our yearly
Turkey shoot because of a "weighted" time formula, target times do
not necessarily end up on the whole minute.

In the "olden" days, before them new digital phangles, just start
with 7 seconds on the analog stop watch and shoot for the 7 minutes
mark.

Try that on a 30 sec/rev analog stop watch!!

- don't really need a target time setting - that's useful but not critical,
- same button for start/stop/lap timing,
- no lap time freeze before clear.

Why would you need lap time for TD work?

I have the Seiko for over 20 years, and it is the best. Others are
just copy cats of the Seiko.

Re: [RCSE] Multiplex ASH 26

2006-06-12 Thread Brian Chan
Title: Re: [RCSE] Multiplex ASH 26

David,

I think the ASH26 has the same system as my Alpina 4001. It has
the floating system. The joiner does not touches the fuselage. The 12
mm steel rod goes into the brass tubes in two wing halves, thru a hole
in the fuselage. The hole is about 2 mm bigger than the rod.

There are 4(2 on each side) pin that  glued into the root
ribs and you have to match drill the holes in the fuselage.  I
think you can find the instruction in the Tangent sailplanes.  If
not I may be able to find  the Alpina instruction and mail it to
you.

If you have the 12 mm rod, then everything else can be home
made.

What are
people using these days for heat shrink tubing when making battery
packs?  I'm aware of "Clearly Superior"  tubing, but
it's not cheap at $1 a foot.  White or clear are what I
prefer.  I'm looking for 10-25' of 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, and 3"
tubing.

gv

George,

I think that is the going rate, unless you buy by the roll
(500 ft -1000 ft depends on the size), then you might get $0.50 a ft.
Not too many places will do cut length for less. Try to find it in
surplus stores.  I never see the thin stuffs in the surplus
places.

Robert Samuels ... St. Louis

You can melt lead in a tin can. Like a campbell soup can is good,
because it was drawn out with a sheet in stead of soldered ends. Cut
the top off and bend the lip to form a spout so the lead can be pour
out easily.
I made my "mold" out of 1/4" balsa wood. Use a piece of pine for the
bottom and 1/4" balsa to form the sides. It can survive about 2-3
"molding".

Warning: pour the molten lead in slowly and get the can as close to
the mold as you can. Splatter lead on bare skin can be a very
unpleasant experience.

four servo wing sailplane using the 9Z. My radio is the older, pre-WC
version, and the plane I'm trying to set up is an Opus.

I'm pretty close but I have a couple of problems that are stumping me.
Aileron differential (ADF) only affects the ailerons and not the flaps
that work along with the ailerons. If I use ATV (adjustable travel
volume) to limit the range of the flap motion, I end up with limited
down flap available in butterfly mode.

I need full 140% down flap range with crow (butterfly) deployed for
maximum down flap on landing approach. However I don't need anywhere
near 140% down flap travel when the flaps are working as ailerons.
Unfortunately, limiting the flap range outside of crow programming seems
to have the effect of reducing the available flap range within crow.

Thanks in advance for any help!

[RCSE] D9pin assignments

2005-11-09 Thread Brian Courtice
I just happened to have wired my first ever D9 connector for a four
servo wing earlier today.

Here’s how I did it. “S” equals signal. “O” stands for an unused pin.
Each + and – pin on the bottom row has two wires attached. (Both left
servos on one side, both right servos on the other.) It worked just fine
for me. After I got all the wiring done, I splooged epoxy mixed with
micro balloons around the terminals to seal them and strengthen the
connection.

Next time hopefully the pilot will be more "Advertiser Friendly".
Perhaps a 4 hour landing pattern with several aborted landings.
Enough time to run commercials between the attempts. Add a couple

Century". Nothing like media and hype. :-)

I turn off the sound and watch it , much better. Listening to those
who know little to none about it and try to keep talking just to keep

change.who is jumping off and getting on in mid air???!!

RE: [RCSE] How to mount a v tail

2005-09-19 Thread Brian Courtice
Try making a block that will sit on top of the v-tail at the root. (Angle
the bottom of the block to match the v-tail angle.) Now you can set a small
bubble level on the block to measure the v-tail incidence. Raise the tail
until the bubble is perfectly centered, and then use a meter to set the wing
incidence.

I’ve never flown a Snipe, but I doubt you’ll need that much positive
incidence. I’d start around 1 degree I think. (Enough to be sure it isn’t
negative.)
My own fast wingerons are set up at 0-0, or very close to it.

I never did find a winch but definitely found a few world class wenches!

LA is the next stop later this evening, home on Friday to start work on my

My Louisville teammates managed to get their respective 30 mins for LSF 3

No worries for them though, we have a great leader Ed Wilson to keep things

RE: [RCSE] Death to RCR

2005-08-24 Thread Brian Courtice
Thirty two years ago, when I was twelve, my older brother brought an
issue of RCM into my parent's home. I have no idea who gave it to him or
why he brought it home, because he never even read it. I, however, read
and re-read that issue until I wore it out. It was another six years
before I could afford to get started in R/C, but in the meantime, I
haunted the newsstands every month, eagerly waiting for the next issue
of RCM to arrive.

After all these years, model airplanes are still the joy of my life.

These days, I get most of my model airplane related news and information
from the internet, and I only buy model aviation magazines on occasion.
Still, for me, it is a sad thing to realize that RCM will be no more. My
RCM magazines were the treasures of my youth, and the source of many of
my hopes and dreams.

really an entry level sailplane format that many of us still

to itself.. but not at the cost of 2 meter or unlimited formats..

witness:

JoJo flying much of a max with his tx laying on the ground... thomas
and friend flying on each others laps.. chairs on the flightline for
pilots and timers..

what other examples do i need to bring.. it isn't the same challenge

I would not bring this up in the F1 Forum or old timer forum. Most
of them don't even use transmitters to fly!! And the max their

Not using the tx does not mean there is no skill involve. I would

Aloha to all. I’ve noticed quite a few organized competitions, meets, and fun
flys over the past several months posted here on RCSE. I’ve “never been” to
the mainland but if I did go, I would want to setup my itinerary to include one
of these R/C competitions, meets, or fun flys. From people’s experience and
unbiased opinions☺, what would be the best organized competitions, meets, or
fun flys have they encountered? I’m also concerned about local accommodations
(hotels, camping sites if I decide to camp out, etc.). I would like to hang
out with the local flyers and see their flying sites also before and after the
organized meet if possible. I would rather go to something that is soaring
related, but I would consider other R/C meets like TOC and R/C shows and
exhibitions just as long it is worthwhile to check out.

Gordy's post about a model hydoplane meets the Gordy rule, which is the
only allowable exception to the "all posts must be soaring related"

According to the Gordy rule, if a post interests Gordy, it should
interest everyone else too, and therefore does not need to be soaring
related.

Conversely, if a post does not interest Gordy, the post is spam and
should never have been posted. This part of the Gordy rule may be freely
applied to posts that are indeed soaring related.

Re: [RCSE] soldering problem

2005-07-25 Thread Brian Chan

I'm using silver bearing solder 96%tin/ 4% silver to solder 3/64" steel wire
and a propane torch. The solder rolls off even after using flux. Any
suggestions?

Thanks,
Mickey

Mickey,
did you clean the wire with steel wool or sand paper.
And the wire is probably not hot enough.

Don't waste your money on the 4% silver stuff. It is not good enough.
Just enough for them to advertise THERE IS silver in it.

RE: [RCSE] gliderworld1 - Poor salesmanship

2005-07-17 Thread Brian Chan

BTW,charging exorbitant shipping prices to "bypass" or
recover ebay fees is against ebay rules, but done
frequently.

I don't know if it is Ebay rules or not, but I see people frequently
charges 50.00-100.00 for shipping. They sell a LCD monitor for 59.00
but charges 60.00 for shipping. I guess Ebay does collect percentage
on shipping?

[RCSE] "2 meter r hurts.Dayton!" - The winners?

2005-07-10 Thread Brian Smith

So.  Who was 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, and of course,
What models were they flying?  You Know Gordy. The regular questions that
inquiring minds want to ask/know. (smile) Brian Smith

  Subject: [RCSE] "2 meter r hurts...at
  least in Dayton!"

Had my trusty (more like rusty since it never gets out to fly) Organic
charged and ready for some ass kickin
  today in Dayton.
Woke up at the local Holiday Inn to sun and calm winds.  Got to the
field to find sun and wind building.

All the big dogs showed up to put the hurtin on me, Don Harris, Paul the Siegel, Marc Gellart, Jerry SuperV Shape, and a cast of other rough looking types who were
obviously ringers brought in to insure that I wouldn't be hauling any more
  Dayton wood away.

I tried my own intimidation by showing up pulling a trailer (you
know to carry all the wood), but in the end it didn't work.

It was sooo obvious what was
afootFirst they rig the winches to lull me into complacency by making sure
that I out launced  everyone in my
rounds.  That part worked, I zoomed well beyond all, and headed out
distracted, so never noticed that I flew through hundreds of thermals.

After 6 rounds of 10minutes each, I had amassed a total time of about 6
minutes (the total air time out of all 6 rounds) while everyone else seemed to
  get their times.
First round they had rigged a tree line to extend upward so that I
would get stuck behind, off field in some beans!  These guys are
devious.  That put a bunch of poke holes in my Organic's Ultracoat and put a
wrinkle in the new fuse's tailboom.

Then they had trimmed bushes up wind so that I had tremendous turbulence
in the landing zone, which caused a flip over landing.

All in all a pretty fun day, and
seriously one of the most challenging flying sites I have ever flown and
easily some of the best thumb wiggling soaring I have been privileged to witness.

Wish you all could have been hosed like me :-)

Re: [RCSE] need advice for a altimeter

2005-07-04 Thread Brian Chan

hi guys,
I'm looking for a altimeter that is small in size that will log my
max height.

I'm using it for testing my max launch height only, and want to be
able to read it when I land after a speed run.

I don't have a lap top, and it doesn't have to give me the height
verbally.
Just want to pull the nose cone off and look after each launch
and get an (accurate) reading.

thanks,

Dave Hauch

Dave,
Did you look at the zlog by http://hexpertsystems.com/zlog ?

Re: [RCSE] painting monocote

2005-06-29 Thread Brian Chan
Has any body tried that FUSION paint advertised on TV? Does it work
on Duralene or Monokote? Inquiring minds would like to know
;^))

Minokote is polyester film, but if you scuff it up like Bruce
mentioned. the paint will stick to the covering, somewhat. There is a
guy in our club(power), he painted the Nexstar trainer(not sure what
is the covering) with Krylon Fusion. It sticked so far.

Re: [RCSE] Throw Outs, What If...

2005-06-27 Thread Brian Smith
The person with the "best" 5 flights won. Right. ? That is how it was
announced, pretty simple if you ask me. Some flyers may want to throw out
their best score, but not me. What if a flyer just used one of his flights
to test an idea about a building or tree line advantage.? (smile) Brian

and both knew the tasks were dangerous when assigned.
