Items I found enticing:
"# You can now drag and drop downloads, e.g. from the Download Manager to the
desktop.
# SeaMonkey now shows "doorhangers" for notifications like remembering log-in
passwords or after installing an extension.

# The new DoNotTrack HTTP header is supported (configurable in Preferences).
# A page with Troubleshooting Information (about:support) and the option to restart
in Safe Mode are now available from the Help menu.
# Loading the URL about:memory now shows how much memory is used by different parts
of SeaMonkey.
# SeaMonkey should now support more websites that previously appeared to only work
with Firefox (configurable in Preferences).

The documentation, I am unsure if it is fixed. But you should not need
to worry about that.

If you mean the "Extensions installed on updates..." no it has not been
fixed, will not be for 2.1.

We *may* fix it, but I think the solution will be more of a "mark
extension [x] disabled if you don't want it" rather than "don't stuff
into application folder", since we now push the extensions to the
profile anyway.

Which means that if you install 2.1 from scratch, including these
extensions, run once, and then uninstall, and re-install without the
extensions, you'll then STILL have those extensions in your profile,
since they install to profile on first launch.

In Windows XP, I requested the properties for the SeaMonkey 2.1
executable seamonkey.exe. On the Version tab of the Properties window,
I see 3 different version numbers:

* At the top of the tab, File version: 2.0.1.4176

* Under "Other version information", File version: 2.0.1

* Under "Other version information", Product version: 2.1

No. I meant the ability to update from a LOCAL .mar file. See the bug
report at and read
the comments, especiall starting at #13.

While the bug report itself is closed because the Wiki documentation has
been updated, the procedures did not work to update SM 2.1RC1 to
SM2.1RC2 using the partial .mar file. I had expected a new SeaMonkey
bug report on this, but none has appeared yet.

Re-Read my answer.

The complete.mar works, the partial.mar will give you errors if you
don't install certain optional extensions. (in a production version of
SeaMonkey that downloads the updates itself, you'll get the complete mar
when the partial fails).

If you did install all optional files, then the partial works.

I won't be changing the way the partial is generated here.

In the installer, there is the custom install method.

It lets you chose whether or not to install
* Venkman (JS Debugger)
* Chatzilla
* DOMi (Inspector)
* Debug&QA [pre/alpha/beta builds only]

If those extensions are missing from the *app* dir, the partial you are
trying to install will fail. But on 2.1 at least, they are installed
into the profile *from* the app folder, so you may already have them in
your profile, but that won't affect the success/failure of the partial
update.

As I said, the complete update will succeed.

SeaMonkey 2.1 is available in 21 languages, for Windows, Mac OS X and

giving you a more personalized browsing experience.

Can I install it over my current version, 2.0.14?

Yes. (Just note the mention in Release Notes about downgrading BACK to
2.0.14 if that is ever desired)

I can agree to that, while it is possible to go back, it's a process (at least
on Linux) .

A few related questions:
- is the upgrade from 1.x gone? It was noted as being a conversion feature to be
removed from 2.1 and later. I ask only because I didn't see a hint to upgrade
to 2.0.14 then 2.1 if the direct path isn't supported.
- Having SM call itself Firefox solves problems with broken sites, but it will
result in SM vanishing from browser stats, won't it? Meaning sites are less
likely to make any effort to support it.
- is 2.1.1pre daily newer or a fork?

Overall a good job, although there is a serious lack of themes. Also a lack of
documentation of correct generation of themes.

So it doesn't 'block' tracking, it merely posts a flag that says you

This is one of the reasons that I never use google but do my searches

Of course once one is on a site startpage cannot control what happens,
which is where I was hoping this app might have found a way to block -
rather than merely request blocking - of privacy-invasive tracking.

SM 1.x used a different update system (you were only notified of updates
but could not let it automatically download and apply them, not to speak
of partial update files) so the upgrade path there is to download 2.1
from the website (or FTP).

The only part that was lost post-2.0 that I know of is the ability to
migrate download history. See:

From my experience, sites haven't made any effort to support it anyway.
Quite the contrary, sites like Google are now starting to only support
the last few versions of the major browsers...

2.1.1pre is what the 2.1 branch nightlies were called. Generation of 2.0
and 2.1 nightlies has been stopped, though, since SeaMonkey will join
the rapid release train with SM 2.2 (coming some time after Firefox 5,
which is scheduled for June 21).

Hi,

Once more I want to ask you about a problem with 2.1. In the older
editions, clicking on cookies displayed all of them, and deleting them
could be done with one further click. Now, in the new 2.1, cookies are
only displayed by domains, and deletion involves many steps of clicking
on a domain, and deleting each domain's cookies one at a time. So, I
sometimes wind up clicking on a hundred times or more to delete cookies,
whereas with the older system, two clicks sufficed.

Is there any way to get 2.1 to revert to the former and better cookies
method?

Thank you.

There were a number of bugs associated with the old design of the
Bookmarks Manager. The developers chose to resolve those problems by
putting bookmarks into places.sqlite, a database instead of an HTML file.

If you merely want to see your bookmarks (not actually edit them), you
can still create an HTML file. With Bookmarks Manager open, go to the
menu bar and select [Tools > Export HTML]. Navigate to where you want
to save them. With multiple profiles, I save them each in its profile
directory.

You can also automate the exporting by setting the preference variable
browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML to "true". This exports every time you
terminate SeaMonkey. You can do this with about:config, but I prefer
putting
user_pref("browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML", true);
into user.js because I can then add a comment as to what that means and
why I'm doing it.

I don't know if the places.sqlite file is portable.

My recommendation would be to export it to an HTML file, which is ASCII
and should be portable. You then import it back into places.sqlite on
the other platforms.

I wouldn't do that. You will lose any information that is stored in

course, and places.sqlite contains more than just bookmarks.

If you really want to exchange just bookmarks but not lose any

Re: SeaMonkey 2.1

2011-06-12 Thread W3BNR

On 6/10/2011 7:27 PM Robert Kaiser submitted the following:

The SeaMonkey project is proud to present SeaMonkey 2.1: The new major release
of the all-in-one Internet suite is available for download now! Building on the
same Mozilla platform as Firefox 4, it delivers the latest developments in web
technologies such as HTML5, hardware acceleration and improved JavaScript speed.

SeaMonkey 2.1 is available in 21 languages, for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

Most notably, this release features for the first time:

- Sync allows you to share your bookmarks, history, passwords and tabs
across different devices (computers) in a secure way.
- Personas let you choose from thousands of easy to install themes,
giving you a more personalized browsing experience.
- An optional search bar gives access to OpenSearch search engines and
suggestions.
- The new Data Manager unifies management of permissions, cookies,
passwords and form data.
- Improved handling of plugins, including the ability to delete Flash
cookies and survive plugin crashes.

For a more complete list of major changes in SeaMonkey 2.1, see the What's New
in SeaMonkey 2.1 section of the Release Notes, which also contain a list of
known issues and answers to frequently asked questions. For a more general
overview of the SeaMonkey project (and screen shots!), visit

My favorite add-ons are not up-to-date for 2.1, but I'll stay with the latest
version. Everything else seems to be working fine for me.

So I'll be waiting for the updates to:
Download Helper
Prefbar
Quote Colors
Show IP
Mail User Agent

on its home page. It must be for the prereleases then. :(

I wouldn't hold my breath for Display Mail User-Agent, it seems to have
been abandoned -- version 1.6.6 had problems in Seamonkey for months but
wasn't fixed. But I managed to update the maxversion in 1.6.5. and it
seem to work OK in SM 2.1. (Now that 2.1 is final, I might have a look
at 1.6.6 again, since it seemed to work in Thunderbird...)

Quote Colors is in a similar situation, but again, it seems to work with
just a change in the maxversion.

If Philip Chee is interested, I can mail him my hacked versions of those
and a couple other extensions that seem to be working fine in SM 2.1

That's mine. If you read the Description, you will see how to tweak
existing extensions to be compatible with SM 2.1.  Yes, it's a bother;
but I didn't want to wait for the extensions to be updated.

I set the maximum version values to 2.* .

Is there any way to get 2.1 to revert to the former and better cookies
method?

Thank you.

I did this tweak for ALL extensions that reported as incompatible.
Since I have four profiles, I had to do this four times for each
extension (except for two that are installed only in one profile).

In your profile.

Find the extensions directory. Do a search in that directory for all
instances of install.rdf. Edit all of them to set em:maxVersion to 2.1.
(I actually set it to 2.*)

Be careful. Some extensions have different em:maxVersion values for
different applications. If there is more than one em:maxVersion, be
sure to change it for SeaMonkey.

places.sqlite does not contain OS info (I never said that, quite the
contrary if you care to re-read my reply). You just need to make sure to
use it with equal versions (e.g. SM 2.1 and FF 4.0) since major app

incompatible changes (like from SM 2.0 to SM 2.1).

I never tried it myself, but AFAIK you need a Sync server:

Wait, isn't this the same as manual copies that I do with v2.x, v1.x,

No, Sync transfers only the changes you make, and you can select what
should be synced per profile and device (e.g. just sync bookmarks from
one device, and everything from another).

On top of that, Sync encrypts all data *before* it leaves your client.
So no-one except you can read it (or technically speaking, only those
who have the Sync account password and Sync Key), not even Mozilla.
That's why I see no point in setting up a custom server, but if you're
really paranoid, you *can*.

That said, Sync is not able to sync address books (yet). Syncing mail is
pointless, because IMAP is better suited for that. For news and feeds
there was MailNews Sync, which probably could be made work with newer
Sync versions again; it just needs some love.

At the end of the location bar, there's now a bookmark indicator. If the

it shows you where the bookmark is (and offers a few more options). If

But, if you removed the add-on via Tools/add-on manager the directory that

You can redownload the xpi here without
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/addons/67148/
An xpi is a zip archive, so you could unzip, modify the install.rdf,
rezip and install that way if you wanted to. Or just try installing from
the xpi & when it fails it may expand into the proper folder & then
modify the install.rdf.

   {92650c4d-4b8e-4d2a-b7eb-24ecf4f6b63a}
   2.0
   2.1

Where is the file located?

In your profile.

Find the extensions directory. Do a search in that directory for all
instances of install.rdf. Edit all of them to set em:maxVersion to 2.1.
(I actually set it to 2.*)

Be careful. Some extensions have different em:maxVersion values for
different applications. If there is more than one em:maxVersion, be
sure to change it for SeaMonkey.

But, if you removed the add-on via Tools/add-on manager the directory that
housed that extension will be empty.

You can redownload the xpi here without
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/addons/67148/
An xpi is a zip archive, so you could unzip, modify the install.rdf,
rezip and install that way if you wanted to. Or just try installing from
the xpi& when it fails it may expand into the proper folder& then
modify the install.rdf.

Ah, yes - I didn't realize that a re-install, even though it failed, would leave
the load intact. Downloaded the .xpi, went to the directory, changed the .rdf
file and - viola - a restart of SM showed the add-on now works.

(This with the Show IP add-on) Others will be tried tomorrow. Thanks.

Open the Bookmarks Manager. Navigate to where you want the second
instance of a bookmark. This should be in the right-hand pane. Then
drag from the address area (URI bar) or a tab and drop into the desired
location, again in the right-hand pane.

With duplicate bookmarks, you should assign a unique tag -- the same tag
-- to both. Then, if you update one, the update will apply to both. If
you then delete one, both might be deleted; but I'm not sure about this.

I just tried an experiment. I opened WinZip. I dragged a PrefBar .xpi
file into the empty WinZip window. Seeing install.rdf, I viewed it with
Wordpad. I was able to edit install.rdf and save the result back into
the .xpi file. All this worked without actually extracting install.rdf
and then rezipping it after editing.

I don't know if other zip applications will work this way, and I don't
know if any of this can be done on non-Windows platforms.

A bookmark is only deleted if all duplicates are deleted. Just like
hard-links in linux directories.

I really don't want to use Sync. Oy, export/import sounds more work. Grr.

If your concern is privacy for Sync, you *can* use your own server.
(even a local network server if that suited your fancy).

Doing something which fails if the network fails, if the server fails, or if
some client or network has a bug which scrambles the data on the server seems to
be a problem for some people. There is value to controlling all of the risk
factors yourself.

A bit more work to setup, but far far less work than export/import
frequently or copying files around.

I'm at least going to look into that myself, but would probably run my own
server, depending on how well I can back up the data on yours.

And I think that for many people, privacy actually is an issue, esp.

So I'll be waiting for the updates to:

Mail User Agent

I wouldn't hold my breath for Display Mail User-Agent, it seems to
have
been abandoned -- version 1.6.6 had problems in Seamonkey for months
but
wasn't fixed. But I managed to update the maxversion in 1.6.5. and it
seem to work OK in SM 2.1. (Now that 2.1 is final, I might have a look
at 1.6.6 again, since it seemed to work in Thunderbird...)

Quote Colors is in a similar situation, but again, it seems to work
with
just a change in the maxversion.

If Philip Chee is interested, I can mail him my hacked versions of
those
and a couple other extensions that seem to be working fine in SM 2.1

I'll vote for QuoteColors.

Without QuoteColors I simply could not read emails and Newsgroups.

I have QuoteCollapse which does both colors and collapses long quoted
sections so I can read the most recent (current) comments. And expand
the quotes if needed, of course.

I tried QuoteCollase several Times, and iI always ended up with a wide
bar at the bottom where the status bar would be be bout 2" long and
width of the screen. After removing it I would have to remove chrome
file (which I have forgotten which file with SM off and the restart.

Phillip, what you describe (screen wide, 2inch high bar at bottom of
browser screen) reminds me of a screen that I used to get, back in Moz
suite days, because one or other of the extensions I had installed
wouldn't work for the version of Moz I had installed.

Could this be your problem now??

well I had that problem on All SM1.x versions and even tried on SM when
it first came out with same result. the only cure was remove it them
remove certain chrome files and let them rebuild of couse by doing so
you had reinstall all your extensions. IN SM2 I tried it first. so I
didn't have to remove much.

I'm using QuoteCollapse 0.8 without much of a problem (needs
compatibility checks deactivated at least for SM 2.1, though). The issue
you describe (broken MailNews status bar) sounds similar to what I found
with Mailbox Alert, though. I've contacted the author; let's see where
that leads.

I can only say that the version I have works on 2.0.14, and I'm really happy to
have it. I will try an install on 2.1 as I upgrade something.

I'll probably get my post taken down for this, but wouldn't it be easier
to provide a compatibility check disable in about:config that actually
WORKS instead of having some of us creating hacked xpi files and others
staying with old versions because they can't or won't?

When the SM version is > than the specified max in the install.rtf
wouldn't it be nice to have a pop-up asking something like
Your version of Seamonkey is newer than the add-on is know to support
try install anyway? [TRY] [CANCEL]

Just my ten cents worth...

That's a brilliant idea!! You can remove my post as well. :)

First of all, I don't see why anyone would kill a post with such content.

The situation with SM regarding incompatible extensions can be
summarized as follows: First, there are two (10 ;-)) kind of extensions:
Those that declare compatibility with at least some version of SM (let's
call them "used to work"), and those that don't (let's call them
"unsupported").

For extensions that used to work (like QuoteCollapse), you can simply
install the Add-on Compatibility Reporter from AMO. It is currently
compatible with all SM versions from 2.1 (stable) through 2.4a1 (trunk).
This has the added benefit over simply setting the compatibility prefs
yourself (which you don't have to remember to set anymore!) that you can
let the extension authors know that their versions still work with the
SM version you are using.

Unsupported extensions however are different. They cannot be installed
or enabled in SM at all unless you hack their install.rdf (or someone
releases a new, supported version of course). Sometimes that's
unfortunate since the author just "blindly" removed SM support from
install.rdf, but it certainly is the safest thing to do as a default. To
my knowledge, there is no extension that automatically hacks install.rdf
for you (which, in the case of a download/install, would have to happen
in between the download and the install!).

The system, as outlined above, is part of the Mozilla platform (i.e.
shared with Firefox). Consequently, any change to it needs to be made to
the platform code, which is under Firefox development ruling. I'd assume
that any request regarding install.rdf hacking (even pref-guarded) would
be turned down, so I wouldn't bother trying.

Currently there is a compatibility check which can be disabled, but setting it
doesn't disable compatibility checking! That's kind of a waste. There was (is)
also another check disable, which I can't find quickly in my notes, something like:

  extensions.checkCompatibility.2.1
or similar, which actually did something, but doesn't seem to any more (which is
why I don't have it enabled currently). If there were a config to ignore
compatibility checking beyond the first (major) number, it would at least give
people a chance to try things.

I assume that the reason people work on Seamonkey is because they want people to
use it, therefore an option to disable at least some of the checks would be
really useful. This *is* use at your own risk software, and an option is WAY
safer than having users fiddling inside install.rdf.
