The way I do imports from GIS: 1. I turn shapefiles into spaghetti osm files using a simplified version of ogr2osm https://github.com/milovanderlinden/ogr2osm-light 2. Download osm data for the area your working in 3. Open the spaghetti files in josm, they will form seperate layers of ways without any tags. 4. Manually work these extra layers through, clearing errors and adding tags 5. Select the objects from your layers you think are correct to be imported in OSM and use Edit - Merge selection (Ctrl+shift+m) 6. Upload to osm I never do Merge layer as I think it is important to be able to manually check for errors. Maybe this is of some use to you. Let them make whatever decisions they must make about deep linking and whatnot. Re: [OSM-talk] Street Addresses
Hi John, The recently released 2010 TIGER/Line data should have better address range information than earlier versions. The US Census Bureau went throughout the country with GPS units and collected a national set of address points to create its Master Address File (MAF) used implementing the 2010 Census. They can't release the MAF for non-disclosure reasons, and TIGER/Line data has missing address ranges and random address ranges (where in some cases they have lengthened or shortened the actual ranges) for non-disclosure reasons as well. My guess is importing 2010 TIGER data for NYC would be a nightmare because of the possibility of stepping on user edits in OSM. Given the problems with updating road ways, I think the real solution for addresses in OSM is to use address points where possible. Dan On 01/29/2011 10:53 AM, John Harvey wrote: Thanks Dan! I believe the US tiger dataset also has street address information and I wonder if people are seaming together that data. I've heard varying opinions of the compatibility of the license between what Vancouver gives away and the OSM. [OSM-talk] Announcing Maps4Mac
Maps4Mac ( http://code.google.com/p/maps4mac ) is an on demand offline map browser for MacOS 10.6. It allows you browse and search maps, load gpx file overlays, track your position, and generate gps logs. It uses Mapnik as the rendering engine, and in addition to osm data you can use it to display any Mapnik XML file. The map data is stored in a standard database format (either PostGIS or SpatiaLite), so you can access and manipulate the data with standard tools in addition to rendering it. Developing this has really made me see how limited a view of OSM data the slippymap provides, people map a lot of useful information that you don't see unless you download the XML. While the current Maps4Mac rendered tag set is the same as osm2pgsql imports for the slippymap you can still find things that don't otherwise render by searching (e.g. the slipplymap doesn't show very many values for shop=*). [talk-au] JOSM filtering image/map tile URLs
I was sent a link to this thread on the JOSM dev mailing list: http://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/josm-dev/2011-January/005185.html The jist is some people are pushing to put URL filtering into JOSM, currently the discussion is focused on Google images/tiles however it wouldn't take much of a leap for things to also block Nearmap URLs since those pushing for this change seem to want to make JOSM difficult to use for anything but OSM allowed sources. Thankfully the main author of the software seems to want a more general editor, not just one that works with OSM specific APIs etc. ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au

It's unfortunately that things turned out how I thought they might, what's worst of course is the deceitful tactics employed to force through change that may not even be needed since maps aren't just raw facts, there is quite a bit of creativity going into things at all levels. So, what happens now? Has Frederik appointed himself as top-dog in the JOSM project, above and beyond the maintainer? [Talk-de] Adressen, Häuser,... Modellregion

As the person who did GeoBase import for Kamloops, I thank you for checking over the work! Kamloops already had some mapping done in the area before I started the import, so it was difficult making sure everything was correct. My knowledge of Kamloops is pretty much restricted to the highway and the Costco (cheap pizza on the way to Sun Peaks!). I noted on the import spreadsheet [https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Am70fsptsPF2dERFUlBodFFmbmJiR3BBMHR4MzJDM1Ehl=en#gid=3] for the Kamloops tile (092I09) that lots of roads converted from single way to dual oneways, though in some cases (eg trans-canada near oriole) the single biway was retained. Also be on the lookout for fixme=* tags and note=* tags, as I will put notes for future local mappers in there. I really like to use JOSM. Whichever tool you use, you'll get used to it and learn the little tricks over time. I have been mapping in and around Kamloops, BC where I seem to be a bit of a lone wolf. There don't seem to any members listed in the area that are doing anything at all. I've spent most of my mapping time correcting errors in the previous GeoBase imports and addressing those noted in Keep Right. Also, I've been linking features (railroads, rivers, etc) that are mapped both east and west of my area. Anyway, I've been following the discussion for the last little while in regards to the Canvec data and it has brought up the question in my mind as to what you see as the most effective use of my time. While I don't mind proceeding as I have, I'm wondering if my time might best be spent reviewing and correcting date that have been imported into the area. I mean, I don't mind mapping the Fraser and North Thompson rivers, or adding lakes and such... but if those data are available elsewhere, then perhaps those data should be imported and I should spend my time reviewing those data from the area I know best... south central BC. Theres's no point in duplicating efforts. My immediate problem is that I am not familiar enough with the tools or the process for even checking out the quality of the Canvec data in this area.
Votre avis ?
