Perhaps amenity=luggage_trolley for airport or train station use? In American usage, trolley is a synonym for trolley car, as in street railways. Hello, just to add my 2 cents on the topic, I don't think it is an Australian related problem in itself. I would say that the problem is exacerbated by the fact that you share the same language as other countries. It is common to see some people to try to update the pages according to what is present internationally. I believe that a separate wiki can be useful at cases, if not only for the case that it can be potentially be easier to search and to work from it. Several other communities are thinking about the same thing in order to have something not as intimidating in the end. I do believe though that at least people try to keep a minimum of Australian specific page on the main wiki and try to get everything synchronised in the end. I personally don't use the wiki so I am not going to make much comments about what is going on, but I can see why it would be very annoying to someone, especially while they are some very country specific elements sometimes, and that by definition tags are not absolute but relative to the country where you live. I learn from existing features from the map, from other contributors and finally from tools like osmdoc or tagwatch. You are making assumptions about how I work which have absolutely no basis. You can do things without necessarily having to read in detail the wiki, while keeping up with more recent tags and methods through social interaction. It is not just a matter of who is reading the most of the wiki. In addition, I tend to care more about the data than the map itself, and that's why I am using tools like osmdoc and tagwatch to make sure that when I use a tag it is already being used. [talk-au] Interesting take on OSM growth and expansion...
http://brainoff.com/weblog/2010/04/28/1556 “What would it take to map an entire country?” With the growing visibility of Map Kibera, that question is coming more frequently, especially in Africa, where both OpenStreetMap and traditional mapping are widely absent. This is a massive question, which is going to depend very much on circumstances of that country, and on who is asking that question; and in the end may be better answered by a different question. In response to a couple queries, from Liberia and Malawi, I decided to write up a few blog posts to start off those conversations, and serve as reference for any of the other 200+ countries on this planet. To start, going look at a few examples to serve as models for answering the question. Up front, the question assumes one very important thing; the historical growth pattern of OSM isn’t happening. Traditionally, a few individuals had their minds blown by a conference presentation on OSM, or maybe a random blog post somewhere, and they start mapping their home town. And when that looks to be a big task, and they start eyeing the next town, they start recruiting others through mapping parties. A mailing list is set up. The virus starts to spread, and OSM might get the attention of a local government or two, maybe some companies, and soon, the country is well on its way to being mapped. The growth is organic. It might take years. The preconditions are important. Roughly, there has been an active community already of technically proficient people who have leisure time, perhaps already contributing to open source projects. In other countries, there may not be a technical community, or socioeconomic conditions make leisure time a valuable and scarce. Other places may be in conflict. These are places where people start to consider intentional interventions to get mapping going. The first place I took part in an intentional effort was India. Now, India is well known for having a broad and highly skilled technical base, but at least in 2008, there was proportionally small open source community. There had been interest in mapping through the Free Map project, and Schuyler and I took the invitation to promote OSM through a slightly insane schedule of mapping parties in 7 Indian cities in one month. A wonderful experience. But it did not instantly translate into a frenzy of mapping activity. The idea gestated for a time, and slowly, individuals took up the cause, and now the OSM India community is vibrant, centered in cities. One place to note is Mumbai, despite extensive interest, is still not active, largely due to an import of AND data that turned out to be much less than accurate, discouraging further editing. An issue we’re still looking at, and generally, I’ll talk about existing data sources and imports in another post. Palestine was a very intentional mapping, first of the entire West Bank, and then of Gaza. JumpStart International funded a project to create a complete, public domain map of all roads. We estimated a time of about 6 months, which turned out to be accurate (more on time estimates in another post). The approach taken was to hire engineering graduates, in teams based in each region, train them through mapping parties, and coordinate the incoming data. Gaza was not to be mapped, but the 2009 crisis there motivated the remote OSM community to fund raise to purchase recent satellite imagery of the entire strip, and trace remotely. After the conflict was over, JumpStart entered Gaza and built up a team to enhance that work with a combination of GPS tracing and imagery. The result is a complete road map of Palestine. However, no sustained OSM community of interested individuals, local companies, local government, and UN agencies is left. The individuals involved saw this as temporary paid work, and many of them have taken jobs outside Palestine. The wider community wasn’t engaged with an aim to build capacity. So now, even though Israeli OSM has been interested to hold joint activities with Palesinte, and Ramallah now has street names, the map isn’t being updated. In Kenya, we haven’t set out to map the entire country, but it seems like the base we’ve built in Kibera is ready to spread throughout Nairobi and beyond. We’ve focused heavily on Kibera, but with the idea always that the group here, and the entire community, will be able to take the project forward. The impact of mapping a place that was unmapped, and considered unmappable, has made a great impression within civil society, the government, and the UN. We’ve taken a lot of time to outreach to others already working with map data. The approach is more like planting a single seed, nurturting it, and then allowing it to grow. It’s yet to be seen how this pans out. JumpStart started next working in Georgia. Their approach is long term but different. They have first focused on conflict areas, following the Russian Georgia conflict in X, and also in the capital, Tbilisi. From this start,

[talk-au] J2ME Survey Assistant Application
(Cross post from the users: Australia forum) Hi all, I've been really getting stuck into performing on-foot surveys of areas where the street names are missing, and I was thinking about an easier way of recording street name data. Walking papers is fantastic (and I still use it to print out where I need to survey), but I was looking for something less fiddly than writing names onto a sheet of paper, as well as trying to enable people not living in an area still being able to help with updating maps in an area. Having written a few J2ME apps in my time, and some of these involving Location Based Services (i.e. GPS), I thought I'd create one to help record name and POI data. I guess you could say it's based on the tourist guide principle (if you look over there point you'll see...). That is, if you record the position, the direction and the comment, others should be able to infer what you have surveyed. The data entry process is quite simple: 1: Find an unnamed street or point of interest to comment on 2: Record point: enter the (compass) bearing and name of the street or comments on the POI When a point is recorded, the GPS coordinates, heading and comments entered are saved onto the phone. At the end of the survey, choose Send from the menu and all the stored data is sent to a server via WWW/CGI. After that, it's relatively simple to render these points using AJAX and OpenLayers. I've included a small screenshot from my recent alpha test of the application at http://vlchung.freeshell.org/mapme.jpg (those of you from Perth will recognise that as the area adjacent to Lord's Fitness Centre). As you can see, I've selected a data point where I'm saying that the street heading directly north is called Jasmine Avenue. It's my hope that this application will be useful for the following reasons: 1: Not so much writing down of stuff in the field, meaning that people running surveys don't have to carry around as much stuff. 2: Dissociates surveying from the actual editing of the map, meaning that if you like walking around doing the surveys but aren't so keen on the data entry, someone else could theoretically lend a hand by using your survey data to update the maps. Same for vice-versa (particularly our OSM friends overseas who physically can't reach the Australian survey areas). I figured I'd post to the Australian group, because of my involvement in updating the Australian maps and the fact that thanks to nearmap it's not (usually) the presence of the streets that are missing, but the names (and this application is geared towards that situation). There are some definite TODOs in here such as using a phone's on-board compass (my phone doesn't have one on board, so I've been using an orienteering compass) or coding for more popular platforms (Android etc). Anyway, so I was wondering if anyone out there: 1: Thinks my app would help the surveying effort? 2: Would be interested in helping test the phone app (J2ME phone with on board GPS required - e.g. Nokia E71)? 3: Would be interested in helping test the idea that this information would enable a third party to enter street name information, by trying to use JOSM / Potlatch to enter in data provided by people from their phones (I think this is quite important, as it's the main reason why I'm motivated to do this)? Thanks in advance, Voon-Li.

Mind. dafür bräuchte man also eine Gegenregel.
