The header fields you try to change have to be set as "Allow to edit
this field in the message editor". The relation between the message
editor and the macros for editing isn't really obvious, though. :-/

Unfortunately, you can't change this property for the predefined header
fields, IIRC.

If the fault is at your end, it is at mine, too. I tried every
combination I could think of, not in a QT but in an AB template, and
none worked. Also adding the header line to the Preferences first didn't
change anything.

Did anyone get this working?

That didn't help. But the solution is to have "Allow to edit this field
in the message editor" checked. Then you can use something like:

%SETHEADER("X-Message-Flag","Get yourself a real email client. http://www.mutt.org/";)

I think it should be documented that you can only change header lines
via a template if you add them to the preferences and make them editable
with the message editor. That's not really intuitive.

Well, my archive of TBBETA goes back only 2 months into the past. In
these 2 months, I find 4 messages from you.

One is a HTML message with a question completely different from the
subject, buried deep within another thread. Do you really expect an
answer to that one??

The second stated that you couldn't extract the Beta from the .rar
archive (BTW, this has been discussed endless times before, you might
want to check the archives on that topic). No question => no answer.

In the third message you stated an error message of the rendering engine
which clearly told you to forward the message to the developers. Again,
you didn't even ask a sensible question. But you expect an answer. OK.

And last but not least, the message I reply to right now. You state that
you don't like the list because you don't receive replies. Perhaps you
should start asking questions before you expect answers, but that
opinion might not be representative for the list.

Probably. :-( . But as far as I can tell, the problem stopped for me
some time ago. Before that, everything I printed from TB was huge. Only
about one third of the page fitted on a regular A4 sheet of paper, the
rest was cut off. Unfortunately, I don't exactly remember when this
stopped; I don't even remember if it was something from RIT which caused
that change, or if it was a change in my setup. But I'll go digging into
the change list of the 1.54 beta series to see if I can find anything.

The Deskjet is connected via USB and I have a Kyocera laser printer,

IntelliType is used to enable the extra buttons on Microsoft's Natural

There are two ways how you could achieve what you want (one of these is
connected to advertising a Microsoft product; I hope nobody will die of
a heart attack :)

1.) Press the ALT key on your keyboard and use UP/DOWN to scroll in
  your messages.
2.) Use a mouse driver which has that function (I know that
Microsoft's Intellimouse driver is capable of doing this and
Logitech's Mouseware has something similar, although I don't use a
  Logitech product here).

So, the possibilities are there, no need to add something to TB (and
honestly, I wouldn't like to see this feature; it isn't really e-mail
related and as such qualifies as bloat). There are tools and drivers
which offer exactly what you describe, so why re-invent the wheel?

BTW, could you please add a signature delimiter to your templates? It
doesn't make much sense to quote your complete signature.

I don't think that most of the people on this list expect betas to be
bug free.

But after over half a year since the last release and plans to release
1.54 for Christmas, it is really surprising to see the number of bugs
grow. It was this list that talked the developers out of releasing 1.54
with too many bugs. But I don't think a release came any nearer over the
past few weeks.

I agree, they added some really great features in the last betas. But I
still see many rather big bugs which are not being fixed. I've been
complaining about a bug since 1.53d and it is still not functional.

Maybe the new interface is important for the sales. But I think that
bugs and not working features are at least as important. I don't think
many people who try TB and are confronted with numerous bugs and
non-features end up as customers, despite its 'cool' new interface!

Ah, now I know the English word for it. And I see the connection between

I don't think you will receive a good result with any version. As we
could see from the thread, the encoding is correct. It seems that TB has
a problem when displaying encoded subject fields (I don't know if it
affects other header fields as well). IIRC, somewhere before Beta 31 the
displaying was correct.

Maybe this could be added to the mailing list footer. Because there is
no place where someone who missed Stef's first announcement could get
that information from.

I'd even take it one step further and distribute new betas only via the

Yes, I know that. It was only a small correction when Dierk spoke about

CMIIW, but on my system the context menu commands '(Set|Reset|Toggle)
flag for _all_ messages' affects all messages that are shown in the mail
dispatcher, just like the corresponding commands in the 'Global' menu.

The Bat! - bug report - Shortcuts in mail dispatcher

2002-01-10 Thread Lars Geiger

Hello The Bat! developers,

  I'm using The Bat! Version 1.54 Beta/25
  Serial Number 1BDF06D1
under Windows NT 5.1 Build 2600
and would like to report a bug

  The bug description:
In the mail dispatcher, there are confusingly different shortcuts
for important actions in the 'Global' menu and in the context menu
of the messages.

  Steps to reproduce the bug:
Open up the mail dispatcher and have a look at the shortcuts in the
menu 'Global'. Then open the context menu for the check boxes and
look at the shortcuts for '[Set|Reset|Toggle] flag for all
messages'.

I think, the ones in the 'Global' menu are much more intuitive, and
two keyboard shortcuts for the same function are really unnecessary.

Regards,
  Lars Geiger

The Bat! - bug report - default AB in account properties

2002-01-10 Thread Lars Geiger

Hello The Bat! developers,

  I'm using The Bat! Version 1.54 Beta/25
  Serial Number 1BDF06D1
under Windows NT 5.1 Build 2600
and would like to report a bug

  The bug description:
My Bat keeps forgetting the setting for a default address book in
the account properties. After some time it always changes back to
. This happens for every account I have and the problem has
been there since v1.53.

  Steps to reproduce the bug:
The bug is not easily reproducible. Sometimes the problem occurs 10
minutes after I changed the setting, sometimes I can work for three
days or even longer and still the setting is correct. I know that
bugs that are not reproducible are hard to fix.
But at the moment, this feature is useless for me, and I find it
really annoying to have recipients via auto complete from the AB of
a different account when composing messages.

Can anybody confirm? Or does anybody have more clues so this bug can
be killed?

Regards,
  Lars Geiger

Why would you want such a feature? I understand that 'Inbox - Known' is
a feature to prevent spam respectively make handling of spam easier (by
distinguishing between known and unknown (spam) senders).

Of what use would that be for outgoing mail?

You can use it with GMX for retrieving mail, on port 995 (which is the
default port for SSL pop3 connections). It works fine for me, although
I'm in doubt whether I should use it. The encryption, of course,
prevents NAV2002 from scanning incoming messages.

Ah, of course. I think you got it pinned down. It's so simple.

Of how much use would a "disconnect" checkbox be for a LAN connection?
Or a "connection" tab? So the options you see depend on what TB! thinks

Actually, I could really live without this one. I don't use it, it only
sits up there and doesn't do anything.

I can only repeat that, IMHO, any program that needs a feature like a
menu navigator also needs a little tidying up on its interface. That
would make this navigator obsolete.

Well, I have 2 guesses:

1.) Your backup was stored on a CDR, which is by default Read-only. So
all Windows did was copy the access rights of the file together with
the file. (Which is BTW the default *and correct* behaviour when
copying a file from a CD-ROM drive.)

2.) You copied the files from network share. As you speak of a backup,
I don't think that this was the case, but IIRC that was how a member
of TBUDL got that same problem you just experienced.

I wouldn't call "sucks" a technical term, although I don't like SuSE
either. ;-)

But that is more of a personal preference than anything else. I can only
find one reason against SuSE: The optimisation of their distribution for
KDE. IMHO KDE is a huge and slow GUI and I still prefer Gnome or
something even lighter. I don't know if this has changed, but it was
true for version 7.1.

Personally, I'd recommend Mandrake or Redhat for a beginner. A (*much*)
more experienced user could also use Debian, but a beginner should stay
away from this distribution, it's frustrating (I tried :-).

It was actually MIME-encoded. But that didn't prevent TB! from
displaying the HTML code.

The easiest way is to activate "Use MIME standard for forwarding" in
your Account properties -> Templates -> Forward. Then you can easily
forward a message to the list. Another way would be to export the
message as a .msg file and attach this one to the email. The result
should be the same. As we have seen, it is not sufficient to save the
HTML and attach only the HTML file. TB! will open it anyway. :-(

I think the problem lies in the fact, that the message isn't saved when
putting it in the outbox. I just checked, and I am asked the same thing
when the message status is 'modified'. But when I wait for the autosave
to take place before putting the message to the outbox, the message is
not 'modified' and therefore TB! doesn't want to save it.

It's definitely a bug, but it should be easy to fix. TB! just has to
change the status to 'unmodified' when sending to outbox before actually
closing the message edit window.

Of course, you can't. :-) It was fixed in Beta/5. But there was
also a detailed explanation why it happened only to some of us on
this list. Have a look there, if you want further details.

Why? The ">" has become a standard and I doubt that other

means no coloured text, no easy difference between the original
text and your reply,... I know that other MUAs offer that choice,
but what for?? IMO, ">" does a good job. :-)

I don't think this is a bug. These ugly quotes usually are caused
by PGP and its line wrapping. I suppose Gerry didn't deactivate
PGP's internal wrapping, which usually interferes with TB!'s
(better!) wrapping.

Again I vote for this to be in the FAQ, as this happens quite
regularly.

1.0.4-2-idea is an independent build, available at
www.nullify.org. But you still need gnupg-w32-1.0.4-1.zip from
www.gnupg.org, as 1.0.4-2-idea contains only an updated

Beta/7 and Norton AV

2001-04-18 Thread Lars Geiger

Hi beta testers,

Since upgrading to Beta/7 TB! doesn't delete mail on the server
anymore when using Norton AV as pop3 proxy to check for viruses.
The connection is lost before deleting takes place and the
messages remain on the server. When I change my settings so that
Norton AV is bypassed, everything works fine.

And really strange is that the mail dispatcher *does* delete
messages on the server, with or without Norton AV.

Can anybody confirm this problem?

Perhaps it only checks the first time you start up your Bat at a
day, so if TB! was already running and you enter a birthday and
restart, I guess it is not checked again (again, that is only the
way I'd do something like that to keep overhead low).

I don't know what will happen if TB! is running all the time, I
just think that this is the way that I'd realize such a feature
myself: Check at startup the current date and compare it with the
birthdays in the AB. So I tried it with restarting TB! and that
worked fine.

But you will have to test it yourself over a longer period of
time and see if they added a periodical check. I just changed my
time to 04/03/2001, 23:59, with a birthday in my AB on 04/04/2001
and nothing happened when the clock reached 00:00. *shrug* Sorry,
you will have to find it out yourself, my machine usually isn't
on all the time.

Hi A,
On Mon, 2 Apr 2001, at 14:03:47 -0500 you wrote:

For me the new connection centre doesn't work very well because I
have set it to show up automatically (as not to waste space on
the desktop) and I have a fast connection here, so all I really
see is the window of the connection centre appear and then
disappear again. And as I'm having several accounts which are all
checked for new mail at the same time, I cannot read more than
the communication log for more than one account (even that is
hard sometimes).

So what I'd really like to see is an option which will cause the
connection centre window to remain open for some time even after
the tasks are finished. That time could be user-definable (nice)
or some default, I think 20 s would be enough to read the
communication log. Does that sound reasonable to anyone (except
myself :-) or I'm a just day-dreaming?

It's not quite a bug, just some strange misbehaviour. It seems
this macro is executed when creating the message and when
entering the message body. So, right after the creation of the
message the macro states which is correct. If you add an
attachment now and place your cursor in the body afterwards,
this returns the correct attachment(s).
But if you add attachment(s) when the cursor is in the body,
this macro isn't executed again, so it still states .

That's exactly what this *doesn't* do. You can just go to the
