Really annoying quoting-thingy

2002-07-11 Thread Jakob Breivik Grimstveit

See mail file located at ...

   URL: http://www.grimstveit.net/jakob/files/temp/tb.zip

I find it *really* annoying the way TB tries to detect quoting characters.
Many times, it is an url or an arrow sign (like this -) which is
interpreted as quoting characters. URL to messeage above contains such an
example.

Any suggestions on how to improve this? Anyone else experiencing this kind
of problems?

No, but there is an easy way. Type all of your indented paragraphs
without number using auto-format. Text will reflow to the indent
without any problem while you are composing and arranging.

When you're happy that your text is complete, turn off auto-format
(Ctrl-Shift-F) and toggle overwrite mode (Ins) then fill in the
paragraph numbers by over-typing the space.

Empty folder function change proposal.

2002-07-11 Thread Gerard

Hi Bat Users,

I have a small issue which might just qualify for the elusive V2.

I use my mouse for a lot of actions.
I also use it to mark a complete folder read using right click drop down menu.

What will happen is that I click on the option above it every now and
then when I am being quick. My mouse pointer jumps to the OK button and
POOF I just deleted all my mails.
Not the end of the world because I can filter them out of the trash
again, but a nuisance and a time waster.

My proposal for a solution would be to have the NO button as the default
for the empty folder function. I would also like to move the delete
option to an other place in the right click drop down menu.

Just my small contribution to a better BAT ;-)

You seem to be referring to bulleting. No, TB!'s editor doesn't
support on the fly bulleting. You have to manually do the formatting.

Try any plain text editor that supports auto-indenting. You'll have
the same problem. You have to indent the second line before the
auto-indenting can start.

Filter question

2002-07-11 Thread Lynn Turriff

Hi guys ..

In my quest for spam reduction options, I've decided to
filter on the ip's of spam mails which apparently have
forged 'from' addresses. If I make a list of these and use
the 'add' button to add a rule, will these rules be
applied as 'or', or as 'and' .. ?

If the latter, can I make a list on the 'alternative' tab,
and if I do that, how do I separate them? Or do I need to
do it a completely different way?

Wish I could just paste a text file someplace ...

Re[3]: mail to problems

2002-07-11 Thread John Blue

MW Bats-

MW I've got this one narrowed down now. I was having the same symptoms:
MW the first whitespace character acted as an end-of-text delimiter. I
MW don't have a default email handler set, so I had to go into TB's menus
MW (Options | Preferences | Applications) and check the box for allowing
MW TB to be the default mail handler...but it wasn't working.

MW Then...after launching IE (5.01 if you really have to know) I set it's
MW options (Tools | Internet Options | Programs | E-mail) to set TB to be
MW the mail handler. Bingo! Up popped the whole stream. Worked for
MW Netscape, too.

MW I'm not sure if this should be written up as a bug against The Bat!
MW for not completely setting everything that needs to be set for it to
MW be the default mail handler, and I certainly don't feel the
MW inclination to go waltzing through the registry and figure out what
MW changed, but at least I found a solution for the problem - set the
MW options in your web browser, then try it.

MW -Mark Wieder

YAY!!! We have a winner!

Holy cow Mark, I would have never figured that out. Thanks for the
solution!

It's quite annoying, but nothing fatal or anything, compression

i'm running winxp pro, using encryption on the folder where TB is
storing my messages, um...nothing else I can think of that would

Many thanks to you!

Re[3]: mail to problems

2002-07-11 Thread Andrea Zuercher

Mark Wieder writes:

MW I've got this one narrowed down now. I was having the same
MW symptoms: the first whitespace character acted as an end-of-text
MW delimiter. I don't have a default email handler set, so I had to
MW go into TB's menus (Options | Preferences | Applications) and
MW check the box for allowing TB to be the default mail handler...but
MW it wasn't working.

I was having problems with mailto: clicks (in IE 6) spawning a mad
rush of e-mail and error windows (50 or 60 at a time) rather than a
single compose message window in TB!, even though I had TB!
designated as the default mail handler in IE, as Mark describes here.
After reading some of the discussion on this topic, I went back to the
Internet Options screen, designated something else as the default mail
handler, clicked Apply, then designated TB! again and clicked
Apply. Voila. That worked. I don't know why, but redoing what I had
already done solved the problem. Guess the message here is, even if
you have things set the way you want them to be and they aren't
working right, set something else up, then reset them the way you want
them.

I have to close TB! and then i get the message saying there is an

exiting of everything happens.. TB ends and the box disappears. It does
not interfere with anything that I can notice.. just annoying.

Well ZA is as good at it gets if you don't want to pay and you dont

I used to use ZA but there was a period of time when there were
problems with Windows 2000 and then with XP. I also wanted to see and
control my rules in more detail. Because of that I switched to Tiny
Personal Firewall which is still free but development of this has now
been passed on to Kerio.

The personal firewall from Agnitum (www.agnitum.com) is probably the
best and most secure one available at present and one of very few that
is able to deal with leak tests but the free version is fairly
limited. Kerio Personal Firewall remains the best for me as it gives
me very good control, works as a service under NT/2k/xp and is free.
However, when my son grows up enough to need Internet access I will
probably pay for the Agnitum one.

Sorry if this is getting somewhat off topic.

Address books in different places, yes, but you can use the same
source for all or most of them, and make changes in only one or a
couple of places instead of all of them.

Let's say you need an address book based in your email client to make
emailing easier. I don't think that should be necessary, but, unless
you're using MS Outlook or Lotus Notes, it seems to be the case.
Whether you need a separate AB in you newsreader is up to you, but if
you really do, then perhaps you should use a combined email/newsreader
client. Rumor says that ver. 2 of TB! will have a newsreader plug-in,
but I have no info on that. In any event, I can't see why you would
need wholly separate address books for your PC, Palm, and phone. I'm
only going by my own experience here, but my PC-based PIM will
synchronize to my Palm and also my phone (although I don't use the
phone sync myself). So you only need to record changes in one database
if you copy that db to TB! and sync it to your devices, or two
databases if you keep TB!'s AB separate.

You again mix up the two different meanings of address book in this
context, as Marck stated it.

however, if you are using your contact book for regular paper
mail and/or email it makes sense to keep it all in one place and
use whatever software to reference it.

Not quite. I am more than just content with having different address
books, one in TB! (solely for e-mailing) and one in Paradox (for
various purposes and fit to my needs).

the address manager is really a contact manager

TB!'s AB is an address book, not a contact manager - which stems from
TB! being an e-mail client, not a Personal Information Manager. Like
my Montblanc is not my filofax.

Any data about people should definitely be kept in one place and
referenced by whatever application needs such data.

Definitely not.

And for the one place ... referenced, I might remind you of the
superficially good idea of the Windows Registry, which just doesn't
work. It is so bad that TB! users over and over again have asked for
an INI solution like Opera still uses it.

BTW, even software by seasoned programmers, who know what they are
doing, leaves upon de-installation remnants in the registry.*

*Marck, that reminds me, although I de-installed BrainStorm after a
plain standard installation, I found an entry left a few weeks later
(I think it was in the Software section).

OK -- I see tried that, a spam message I'd received, and sent it to
 myself.

I see that the HTML part is message.msg. If I double click on that, I get
the HTML portion ---but, to see the source, I need to do a View Source.

Functional, but not what I had in mind ---I have the general
understanding that many, or some, ISP's have scanning engines that search
for URL's directly under their control --- therefore, if there is one,
they can handle the spam report otherwise, I am told, it is
discarded and an auto-reply is sent back to the complainer stating that
the spam did not have anything to do with their respective domains.

Thus, if I could Template-Extract the *source*, I would be certain that
plain text, including the bloody HTML code but ALSO the offending URL's
embeded therein, would be visible to a scan-bot.

Printing Problem

2002-07-11 Thread Michael S. Greenbaum

Please forgive me if this problem has already been raised.

With version 1.60m, I'm running into a printing problem. If an email
is two pages or more, and I go to the print menu and tell TB to print
Pages From 1 To 1, the first page prints and then a blank sheet is
ejected with no printing on it.

This happens only in TB, not in any of my other programs, and I can't
figure out what's happening. It never happened with earlier versions.
I've had the problem only since switching to 1.60m.

I'm using TheBat! version 1.60m on a Pentium III 500 mg PC with
Windows 98 Second Edition and a Hewlett Packard printer Laserjet 4P.

Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Thanks.

Can't Retrieve Mail in TB on One Account

Howdy TheBatUsers,

I just switched to DSL from cable today and am having a problem with
the email account that comes with my DSL service. I am able to

I have also successfully sent mail from another account using the
outgoing mail (smtp) settings for the DSL account.

Sent a test message to my new DSL mail account and can see the
message on the server using their browser-based webmail service.
Plus, I can retrieve the test message and see it in Mailwasher. Just
can't download it using TB. I've verified the account settings in TB

  Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi (as you can see I am not using TB yet)

I am new here, so: Greetings, everybody!

Any data about people should definitely be kept in one place and
referenced by whatever application needs such data.

Definitely not.

Definitely both. It's a matter of personal preference. IMO, that is.

I myself would prefer the former, having to enter data only once, and
the fact that in the past there have not been programs that perform
this function properly doesn't mean that the idea is not sound. After
all, that's -again IMO- what computers are (or should be) for: making
things easier.

My computer knowledge is very limited, but I cannot see why there
cannot be a program that would concentrate all information on persons
and call other, independent programs for specific actions: email,
phone calls, whatever. Sorry for my English, but I hope the idea is
clear.

As a matter of fact, I am using Outlook and intend to move to TB. The
problem is that to replace Outlook I need not only an email program,
but also a PIM, and would appreciate suggestions on a good, simple one
(not Act! or similar).

Thank you. Regards,

Sandro (Perotti)

Sandro,

Lotus Organizer. It's consistently rated number one around the world,
is incredibly powerful, and lets you use it at whatever level of
simplicity/complexity you want. Plus, the development of Lotus
products is fairly slow, which some people look at as bad but most
users consider to be good, because the product is generally ahead of
the pack anyway and their investment lasts. You can download a trial

Re: Can't Retrieve Mail in TB on One Account

2002-07-11 Thread John Blue

CM I just switched to DSL from cable today and am having a problem with
CM the email account that comes with my DSL service. I am able to
CM retrieve email for my other accounts, but not the DSL mail account.
CM I have also successfully sent mail from another account using the
CM outgoing mail (smtp) settings for the DSL account.

CM Sent a test message to my new DSL mail account and can see the
CM message on the server using their browser-based webmail service.
CM Plus, I can retrieve the test message and see it in Mailwasher. Just
CM can't download it using TB. I've verified the account settings in TB
CM and Mailwasher are the same.

CM Any ideas? Thanks.

eliminate TB from the POP equation by using another email client like
OE. If you can, then it has to be something in TB. If you *cannot*,
then it has to be something else preventing that traffic.

Ok, I tried using Outlook and it pulled the message down just fine. I
was also able to send an outgoing message for this account in TB.

Am using Zone Alarm Pro 3.x, but it hasn't affected any of the other
accounts before. Turning it off had no effect on this account (i.e.,
still couldn't retrieve the message from the server).

Well, since this won't be a critical account, I'm going to set aside
the problem for now. Maybe something will come to me later. I'll see
if tech support for the provider has had any other complaints like
this.

I don't know whether the header is malformed by Eudora, or

The thread is on this list and I feel it's a valid thread to be

Definitely not.

SP Definitely both. It's a matter of personal preference. IMO, that is.

SP the fact that in the past there have not been programs that perform
SP this function properly doesn't mean that the idea is not sound. After
SP all, that's -again IMO- what computers are (or should be) for: making

Sandro, that is the whole idea, and sometime someone will get it
right. Outlook has a good concept, Ie. sometimes an email should
go into a task list, or drop onto a calendar to show that i need
to do something regarding that item on a certain day.

I am a developer, and what a mess it makes if you have
independent applications making you maintain their own
address-book or contacts. this is one global thing we humans all keep..
phone book!! our phonebooks contain all kinds of info about
people.. i put birthdays, anniversaries, in my paper phonebooks, fax#, cell#,
email, lots of notes about the person.. so in electronic world.
.that is what i'm looking for.. something simple.. but if I want
to set up a meeting or a visit with someone in my address book..
darn it i want them to be in MY ONLY darn address book! Calendar
and scheduling is also something I view as very important and
needs a common address/contact book..

It drives me nuts that there is not a calendar in TB! I love TB!
anyhow, don't get me wrong, but I really need to be able to pull
up a calendar or drop an email on a day of the calendar to create
a tickler file for the day. as for full-on scheduling, for
businesses they work great, personally I don't use scheduling
that much... but email to me is not a stand alone
application..and someday the developers will get it together and
really make a plug-in able email that you can add whatever
vendor's product to. That is my hope.

I'd have thought trying to filter on IP addresses is a little difficult to do
when it comes to spam, seeing as the large number of sources. You'll be forever
updating your filters, and then eventually get lost in the massive list. You
may even end up filtering mail you probably shouldn't. Just a thought ;)

If the latter, can I make a list on the 'alternative' tab,

do it a completely different way?

Wish I could just paste a text file someplace ...

Selective Downloads filter allows you to read a text file if I remember
correctly. I've seen some people utilising this to block known spammers
locations.

I think one of the better methods would be to speak to your mail provider, and
see if they can implement real time black lists, and use services such as
http://mail-abuse.org or even http://www.ordb.org. Again, just a thought.

Re: How to Indent?

2002-07-11 Thread Januk Aggarwal

Hi Allie,

On Thursday, July 11, 2002 at 00:45 GMT -0500, aliens probed Allie
Martin and found:

Remember also, that auto-indent will not work unless you indent an
initial line. The number placed at the left margin on the initial
line of the paragraph makes it unindented.

The %wrapped macro seems to handle it correctly. Try it with the
multi-paragraph wrap QT:
http://www.mail-archive.com/tbudl@thebat.dutaint.com/msg42507.html

Here are the processed versions of Sudip's examples. All I did was
copy (CTRL-C) them from Sudip's message and executed the wrap QT.

[Begin Examples]
1. This is what happens to the numbered paragraphs when typed
using auto format and auto wrapped on.

2. This is what I want to achieve but I can't unless I manually
tab the second line (this line) after turning off auto format,
like I've done here. The lines continue to indent this way
unless I turn the auto format back on and try to add something
in the paragraph, then the entire paragraph is reverted to the
number 1. state. Furthermore, if I hit 'ENTER' to change the
 paragraph..

3. The cursor is still indented underneath the previous
paragraph's text like is the case here. When in fact...

4. This is what should happen when changing the paragraph. Is
there any way to solve, or rather automate, this?
[ End Examples ]
