Folder Window Tabs in 2..10.3

2004-05-16 Thread Scott
I noticed the new tabs at the bottom of the folder window and clicked on Unread,
it then put up 5 folders labeled just Inbox... is there any way I can have the
account that they are the inbox to showing up as well??

Re[2]: Uread Message Tab

2004-05-16 Thread Scott
In which case IMHO it's kinda silly, annoying useless,
considering one can easily set up a folder to grabs all unread msgs
from all folders that excludes all other msgs, making it easier to
   read.

Not that silly for someone like me, with 10 accounts and 496 folders :)

I have about 30 accounts so I can see the value... well until I click on it and
just see about 10 folders called inbox... might be nice to see in the folder
list something about the account its from...

You can't. I just had a rant on TBBETA about this and the fact that
the message you are reading will magically disappear before your eyes

Mail download + new line problems

2004-05-16 Thread Britt Henrikson
Hallo everybody,

I'm new on this list and new to The Bat. Is it allowed to ask several questions in one
mail, or should it be only one question per mail? I take a chance and start out with
the two most urgent ones.

The Bat 2.10.03 on Win2K, stand alone

1. When I want to download mails from the server, 4 or 8 mails are downloaded without
any problem. Then the hard disk starts to work and goes on working for ca 15 minutes.
During this time, the progress bar hangs and doesn't show any progress. After that The
Bat claims that the download is finished. However, only the 4 or 8 first mails are
downloaded. To download the rest of the mails from the server, I have to click on get
mails once again - and this time I get the rest in seconds, no matter if it is only a
couple, or 50, or 100.

After some days, it occurred to me that of course the program was checking for
viruses, so I deactivated all the options for virus checking. No change. Then I
thought it must be checking for spam, so I deactivated all these options, too, and
deleted the Bayes plugin. But the only thing that happened was that The Bat now
doesn't do this every time I check my mail, only in the morning when I start up my
computer. The funny thing is that it is always exactly 4 or 8 mails that I receive
before the hard disk starts to work, and it always takes around 15 minutes. I only
have a modem and it drives me _crazy_. No other mail program does this. If I try to
cancel the download, I get a warning that the mails may be marked a read and thus not
downloaded the next time. What on earth it is The Bat does and how do I make this
stop???

2. It's impossible to start a new line by pressing Enter. As soon as I start writing
on the new line, that word pops up to the line above. I want it to look like this:
Name
Address
Phone
Mail

...but in order to show you this, I have to write this mail in another mail program.
With The Bat, it would look like this: Name Address Phone Mail

Sometimes I get it to work with two lines, but never with three or more. The program
seems to ignore the Enter button function new line. How do I fix this?

Extremely grateful for your help.
Kind regards,
Britt

P.S. I only found this English list. Theres isn't by any chance a The Bat mailing
list in German?

I share my home computer with the wife and kids. They use Internet

The Bat. Changing the defaults is not an option.

When I click on a url in the body of a Bat message, I want to open it

can't find it. An option to designate a specific browser would be
nice.

BH I'm new on this list and new to The Bat.

Welcome.

BH Is it allowed to ask several questions in one mail, or should it
BH be only one question per mail?

It's allowed. Sometimes it might be better to write separate messages
for different issues, but that's mostly for the more complicated
cases.

BH 1. When I want to download mails from the server, 4 or 8
BH mails are downloaded without any problem. Then the hard disk
BH starts to work and goes on working for ca 15 minutes. During this

BH and this time I get the rest in seconds, no matter if it is only a
BH couple, or 50, or 100.

That's rather non standard behaviour. The only things that come to
mind as probable causes are a virus scanner that checks incoming mail
(and thus acts as a proxy server), mail collection via a proxy server
(these two options are basically the same) and some weird interaction
with a firewall.
Since you didn't mention any of those, I can't start to guess the
reason.

BH After some days, it occurred to me that of course the program
BH was checking for viruses, so I deactivated all the options for
BH virus checking. No change. Then I thought it must be checking for
BH spam, so I deactivated all these options, too, and deleted the
BH Bayes plugin.

As far as TB checks these things, they're via a plug-in and those
don't cause these kind of problems.

BH 2. It's impossible to start a new line by pressing Enter. As

Yes, that's the way I do it. ;-)
Options - Preferences - Editor prefrences - uncheck 'Autoformat'
Or when you've installed the German intreface:
  Optionen - Benutzereinstellungen - Editor-Voreinstellungen - uncheck 'Autoformat'

It's possible to toggle between Autoformat on and off, but as I don't
use that, I always forget that shortcut.

BH P.S. I only found this English list. Theres isn't by any
BH chance a The Bat mailing list in German?

I suppose there is, because Thomas Fernandez says in his signature
that he's Moderator der deutschen The Bat! Beginner Liste
As I don't know the address, you might want to wait for a reply from
him or one of the other German list contributors. Another option would
be to check on http://www.batworld.de/ I suppose that's the place to
list German lists about TB.

There are some list member using an automated back-up, but that's
using a third party program, like rar or zip. What's handy in such
cases is to export the register settings for TB to a file on disk.
That can be done with this command:
C:\windows\regedit.exe /e C:\TheBat.reg HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\RIT
The rest is up to you.

Errors reported in except.log

2004-05-16 Thread Michael Henke
Hi all!

Some days ago I've had a look into a file 'except.log' ... - and to my
surprise it's containing several hundreds of entries. More than 90% of
the entries look like that (and it is always the adress 'E06D7363'):

 MH2/Mima 16.05.2004 12:48:55 POP:1 EExternalException External
 exception E06D7363

Today I've got an error message Invalid pointer operation while
sending some mails, and after clicking 'OK' TB! stopped working and
could only be closed using the task manager.

'except.log' shows the following:

 MH2/Mima 16.05.2004 14:48:08 Filters:1 EInvalidPointer Invalid pointer
 operation
 MH2/Mima 16.05.2004 14:48:10 Filters:1 EInvalidPointer Invalid pointer

... followed by:

 MH2/Mima 16.05.2004 15:08:31 POP:1 EExternalException External
 exception E06D7363
 [...]

I did *not* get any AV message window today, and less than *10* since
using 2.x, so I wonder at this huge amount of entries. My 'except.log'
started 04/01/21, so TB's behaviour doesn't seem to have changed from
2.02.03 to 2.10.03/2.11.b5.

What does your 'except.log' look like?

No problem. Open message editor and on top menu select Utilities and
then un-check Auto-Format.

Careful though. TB's editor assumes that paragraphs are separated by one
blank line (2 new lines). So, any lines only separated by 1 new line are
considered a block or paragraph. So, if do a Utilities/Format Block/*
... guess what happens :)

Welcome to the list. There is no rule about whether each question

List software question (was: Mail download + new line problems)

Hi Roelof,

You probably saw it yourself. All replies to Britt appear as a new

My question here: shouldn't the mailing list software provide a

TA I cannot seem to find anything in The Bat! scheduler.

See Roelof's reply per mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

TA Is there a way to use the Windows scheduler or make
TA The Bat! perform a backup every time I exit the program?

I use a free compression utility called 7-Zip (v 3.13) which you can
download from http://www.7-zip.org/ or
http://sourceforge.net/projects/sevenzip/. I use to do an incremental
backup every time I booted with the Windows Scheduler. I don't believe
TB has a method to call a batch file on exit, so something may have to
created to meet this need, or someone can correct me if I'm wrong. The
nice thing about the batch files is they backup the program directory,
mail base directories, and registry, so everything is backed up from a
working installation.

IIRC I revised an incremental backup Allie posted for rar files to
7-zip's command line version. My present mail base is approximately 890
MB. The incremental backup generally takes 1 to 3 minutes to run
depending upon how much change has occurred in the mail base since the
last time it was run. I'll post the batch file below and you can modify
to your TB configuration.

I also use a grandfather, father, son backup routine which Marck posted
on TBOT. This keeps the grandfather backup and rotates the father / son
backup. It is a complete backup from start to finish, and takes about 20
minutes to run on my PC (P4 2.4 Ghz with 500 MB RAM). I'll post the
batch file below and you can modify to your TB configuration.

If TB has no way to call a batch file on exit, does anybody know how to
create this functionality?

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-Original message text=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

 1. When I want to download mails from the server, 4 or 8 mails are
downloaded without any problem. Then the hard disk starts to work and goes on
working for ca 15 minutes. During this time, the progress bar hangs and
doesn't show any progress. After that The Bat claims that the download is
finished. However, only the 4 or 8 first mails are downloaded. To download the
rest of the mails from the server, I have to click on get mails once again -
and this time I get the rest in seconds, no matter if it is only a couple, or
 50, or 100.

I face a similar problem where I can download a few emails out of different
email accounts fine, then when TheBat starts to download emails off the same
domain, 2 different accounts, The Bat will slow down or so that its hanging in
the status window. If I sit and wait 3-5 minutes, it will finally download all
the email and return The Bat to useable... I have been thinking this might have
to do with the AV/Antispam/Firewall I have and is one of the reasons I would
like a switch to have only 1 email account download at a time instead of a
multi-threaded downloading...

GS I did try this but the command box window closed before exiting the TB.
GS Any other ideals.

Probably a good way to corrupt your mail base because compression
continues to run while program is open and running. :-) I don't think
this is a good ideal!

Dispatching on Mail Server query

2004-05-16 Thread Marten Gallagher
If I've got it right:

I highlight an account

Click 'Dispatch Mail on Server'

A different window should appear with the emails listed on the server,
showing subject only.

But what I get is Connection Centre activity and then nothing.

Am I missing something?

I have a separate folder for The Bat mail from this list.

I have a different, shorter, signature set up as the message template.

Most definitely a keeper. :-) What did I do convert you to incremental

Now the only problem I see to make this one heck of a backup is to be
able to run this batch file automatically after you exit TB. See Thomas
Anderson's message per mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Any ideals?

Just thinking out loud here. Doesn't Systinternals
(http://www.sysinternals.com/) have freeware utilities where you could
check to see if TB was running?

,- [ Per About The Bat! Command line parameters in Help file ]
| To ensure that a copy of The Bat! is running on a computer, a program

`-

You could use Windows Scheduler to start TB on boot, then give 10
seconds for TB to start, then start Systinternals utility to check for
The Bat! process. When The Bat! process not there, then start
backup batch file.

Am I in left field here, or do you catch my drift? Is there an easier

Re: List software question (was: Mail download + new line problems)

2004-05-16 Thread Roelof Otten

PM Hi Roelof,
PM excuse me for picking your reply - it could have been any other too.

Never mind, I'm used to that kind of thing. ;-)

PM You probably saw it yourself.

Only after Thomas pointed me to it, but I've been away from my system
for a couple of hours.

PM All replies to Britt appear as a new
PM message except of one's own, which is threaded as usual. I guess that
PM Britt's message didn't have a message ID. So our servers added one.

Yep, I guess that's what happened.

PM My question here: shouldn't the mailing list software provide a
PM message ID if there isn't one sent along with the message? It would be
PM useful in order to keep TB!'s threading by reference intact.

Not the list software. It should be done by the first processing
smtp server. That would be the server of Britt's ISP.
But if that had happened, nobody would've seen the problem.
The smtp servers on the list site also forget to include it, so it's
up to the receiving smtp servers.

As I receive TBUDL as a digest too (started for testing and kept it),
I checked that message. It had these headers:

Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
From: Britt Henrikson [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Precedence: list
MIME-Version: 1.0
Cc:
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Sun, 16 May 2004 14:48:18 +0200
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Content-Type: text/plain;
charset=iso-8859-1
Subject: Mail download + new line problems
Message: 3

The Precedence:, Reply-To: and Message: headers were inserted or
altered by the list software, so it is possible that the Message-ID:
headers was deleted during the processing, but since this is the first
time we notice something like this I wouldn't want to bet serious
money on that possibility. On the other hand, the message in the
digest has lost its X-mailer: Foxmail 5.0 [de] header (that was
present in the normal list message), so if the list software starts
messing with that header, why not with the message id.
Furthermore, the different orders in which the headers are listed in
the list message and the (MIME) digest message suggest that the list
server is altering more than strictly needed.
On the other hand, I've tried Foxmail for myself some time ago and I
was less than impressed with the way it was functioning, so it might
be the culprit too.
Now that I'm writing this, it was 12 March 2003 that I tried it,
somebody was complaining that he couldn't get Foxmail to write to
this list, if your local archive goes back that far, look at
mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] because I could get it to post to the
list, but that message-id is just like the kind of msg-id that my own
server inserts when one is missing.
This was my final conclusion:
ro Third attempt with Foxmail. This program is not quite rfc
ro compliant. It does all kind of illegal things with the address
ro headers. And some smtp-servers are more leniant than others.

Let's say it was Foxmail's faulty behaviour and some erring mail
servers on the way between.

Now I successfully regenerated my environment using a 'simple'
(restricted permissions account) but cannot find the
way to create and admninistrative account or even another simple
 account for my brother.

I don't think you can. What I am going to suggest may work but I have
not tested it.

1.- Exit TB if it is running.

2.- I assume you have not changed the default directory TB uses for its
message base (Program Files/The Bat!/Mail). If so,with Windows Explorer,
browse to Program Files/The Bat!/Mail and copy the whole Mail directory
to a Temp folder.

3.- Uninstall The Bat and make sure the Mail directory is empty. I not,
delete it.

4.- Install TB from scratch and, this time, remember to create an
account with Admin rights.

5.- Finally, once you are satisfied (and sure you have admin rights)
use Tools/Import Messages/From The Bat! Messge Base (.TTB-files) and
import every MESSAGES.TTB files you can find in the Mail folder tree
that you copied to your Temp directory.

I think that should do it but, as I have said, I haven't tried it.

It will not launch Notepad, until I quit The Bat! myself.

If batch files were going to go on to the next command, before they
finished the last one, then you'd get a notice about Copying Files
Completed, when it only just started. And you could be deleting all
your files, before they get copied. It'd be chaos.

Re[2]: Dispatching on Mail Server query

2004-05-16 Thread Marten Gallagher
 Hello Marten,

But what I get is Connection Centre activity and then nothing.

 Am I missing something?

AH ha - yes: emails on the server!

The Connection Centre should always open and the different window, the
Dispatcher, will only open if there are any messages in your mail box.
If the mailbox is empty (or no new messages, depending on what you
selected when launching Dispatcher) the Connection Centre will close.

Thank you - now I understand.

Sure.
Filter string would be something:
Subject:\s*\n
Location: Kludges, Presence: Yes
With regexp enabled of course.
When I'm not mistaken this would filter on the string 'Subject:'
followed by any number of spaces and a new line

MDP No. I use a daily schedule to run the batch, which performs the

What do you use the /EXIT command to force The Bat! to exit, then backup

GS You could use Windows Scheduler to start TB on boot, then give

GS check for The Bat! process. When The Bat! process not there,
GS then start backup batch file.

MDP ... it's a plan ...

I didn't see a reference about running The Bat! in your batch file. So

I did note you set the path in your batch file. So in that case, if
you ran it. And you were at the command line, adding only this in a batch

And running it at the command line, should leave The Bat! application

Maybe the intention was a bit different as you were interpreting in
running the 100 line program you posted.

My intention was to run 7-Zip command line (i.e. backup TB) after TB

Bind attachments only while sending out mail

2004-05-16 Thread Robin Anson
TBUDL members

In account properties, under Files and Directories there is a tick box
marked Bind attachments only while sending out mail. I had assumed that
meant that TB! would attach the files selected for attachment at the last
minute, so that any changes made to the file after the email had been
created but before the email was sent would be found in the attached
file.

However when I experimented with this today, I discovered that this does
not appear to be the way it works.

Can anyone provide an explanation of this option? It does not appear in
my help file at all.

Here's an old easy way. Make your shortcut point to a batch file that
runs TB. i.e.

tb.bat

*
C:\program files\the bat!\thebat.exe
Call backup.bat

*

The batch file will not process the second line until you shutdown TB.

backup.bat will be the batch file you all have been writing to backup
TB.

Note: Don't put in the asterisks in your batch file.

I'd be interested to see why you got four.

I only ran the script three times, and the second time was only a subset
of the subscriber list from the first run.

Most everyone should have gotten two, only a few dozen should have
gotten three.

The reason for the multiples was that my script timed out too soon to
finish iterating through the database, so I started the second run
through where I left off with the first (I was kinda guessing where
that was because I wasn't echoing out the addresses as they were
parsed, hence some of the people who received the first, received the
second).

The third run was due to a malformed e-mail address which threw it off
in the second run.

The script is fine now and if we ever have to whip it out again, it
should be a one time shot that time! grin
