New computer

2021-02-10 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello TBUDL'ers,

I went ahead and copied everything (I hope) related to TB from the old computer
and transferred all to the new laptop. Only two problems so far:

1: It's asking me to register my "evaluation copy" and it doesn't like the
keyblock I had recorded. So I've written an email to RIT Labs asking for help.
We'll see.

2: All my addresses in the address book are now showing in the PERSONAL ADDRESS
BOOK only. All the other folders show zero entries. Is there a way to get TB to
re-distribute them to their proper folders or do I have to manually
re-distribute them?

Much appreciation for any help.

Thanks for your help on this. I have lost your reply whilst sorting
 out this new m/c.

What I was really asking was whether the licence had to be reset to
the new m/c. I have found that this was not needed, just as you said,
copy the files across. I did have to register the block code again
 and that was fine.

[...]

This is how I do it:

1.) Make a back-up of TB! on the existing computer. This will generate a
.tbk file. Copy this file to the new computer.

2.) Install TB! on the new computer. The installer will ask you
whether you want to isntall from a back-up, click "yes" and point to
the .tbk file.

3.) If TB! opens and shows "unregistered", find the mail with the
licence and open it.

4.) If the registration code is not automatically found, go to Help /
Enter Registratin Code, and TB! will import it automatically from the
opened mail.

Note: I am not sure anymore whether step 4 is necessary, or whether
the code will already be imported from the back-up file. Before that
step, you can check under Help / About whether the code has been
imported.

What happens when you click a mailto link in a web browser is going to depend
on the browser you're using. Internet Explorer will use the Windows settings
for file/protocol associations. I think Chrome shares those settings as well.
Firefox, however, has its own independent settings that you have to configure
in the browser (under the Applications tab in Settings). I assume setting the
file associations in TB! sets itself up in the Windows file associations, but I
wouldn't necessarily trust that's working. You should manually inspect that
list to make sure things are configured as you expect.

Moving to a new computer

2014-09-25 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello Mentors,

My wife's HP laptop is giving us trouble to the point that I've
ordered a new ASUS laptop and are awaiting its arrival. The old HP
laptop is running Win 7 and the new ASUS is loaded with Win 8 or 8.1.
Not sure which. Assuming I can even figure out how to make Win 8
work, I need to know how to move TB! from the old HP to the new ASUS.
I searched TB's mail archive using the string moving to a new
computer and the latest entry I found was February of this year
posted by Mike Greenbaum. The last answer to Mike's question was the
one posted by Thomas Fernandez where Thomas states that backing up TB
to a safe place, loading the installer on the new machine and then
when run, apparently the installer will ask if you want to restore
from backup. So, the questions are these:

a) Is this the best way to achieve the move?

b) We're both running ver 5.2 and I find that I no longer have the MSI
file. The archived versions of TB list TB Home 5.8.8 as the closest
to 5.2. Are there any major differences between 5.2 and 5.88?

c) Will my wife's key block work on 5.8.8?

d) Is 5.8.8 going to run in Win 8.

e) What questions haven't I thought of?

e) Should I just cut my throat now?

Option (2)

a. install TB! on computer #2 and follow the directions in

 a. install WUALA on both laptops
 b. create a backup folder of TB! on laptop #1
 b. install TB! on the second laptop using the .msi file
 c. restore from the backup folder on laptop #2
 d. use WUALA to keep both laptops in synch.

Do you all agree that these are the options? So, what is the

After reading this thread for some time I thought I should jump in
with a description of the system we have used for many years:

My computer is the administrator for all email accounts including my
wife's. I have POP3 set up on my computer for all accounts. My wife
has her account set up as POP3 on her computer.

Both of us have our accounts set as IMAP on our phones and any sent
messages are automatically BCC'd to our accounts to insure that there
is a copy of all sent messages available for archiving in the POP3
account on the computers.

The phones sync every 10 minutes and the computers download every 10
minutes. This is very easy to manage with minimal effort. No

Fair enough. I would be wary of potential issues if you both work in

Sounds reasonable.

Additional folders within an account should appear if you press
CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+L after selecting the appropriate account in the folder
tree. Additional accounts would need to be created as a new account on
the laptop and pointed to the same location as the equivalent account
on the desktop.

You could presumably make them appear automatically if you employed a

Since their home page is clear that the program syncs things via The Cloud,
it would require all machines involved to connect via the internet, which
might (let me emphasize MIGHT) be a security risk.

For more than seven years now, I've run my copy of The Bat! in a way that
allows me to access it from any workstation on my home-office LAN; that's
by running it in a virtual machine using Oracle's VirtualBox virtualization
program, and accessing it via the Remote Desktop protocol. Only machines on
my local network can access it. This means I have only one copy of TB! and
it is running 24/7, checking for new mail every 7 minutes.

My solution might not be acceptable in your case, since if one of you were
actually using TB! at any given instant, the other would not be able to
connect until the first person hung up the RDP connection. (It's possible
to configure RDP to allow multiple connections, but would be best to leave
it at the default single-connect-only setting because two people trying to
type at once would simply create a mess).

Several years ago, I used an open-source program similar to PC Anywhere,
called UltraVNC, that allowed my customers to connect to my system over the
internet, with the connection encrypted with a key known only to me and
built into the UltraVNC client I made available to the customers. This gave
me full access to their system but under their control. If it's still
around, you could use this to allow each laptop to connect to the desktop
via UltraVNC, from anywhere at all, but again it would be single-user at a
time. Just a couple of thoughts for alternate solutions...

However, I am curious as to why backing up TB on the old computer and then
restoring from that backup to the new computer failed to move the AB.

Any ideas?

Moved to new computer

2013-05-17 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hi Bats,

As the subject line says, I've built a new computer and am in the process of
transferring everything over from the old computer.

I did a backup of TB! on the old computer to a USB drive. On the new machine I
ran my most recent copy of the TB! .msi file and successfully entered my
registration key. Next I did a restore from the USB drive, apparently
successfully but I find that my AB didn't get restored. And because of this (I
presume) my NEW MESSAGE drop-down no longer contains any my favorites. Needless
to say the AB contains only that which comes with TB! originally.

I should note that all my folders appear to be present with all their associated
emails.

What did I miss?

Migrating to a new computer - a few questions...

2011-11-09 Thread Melissa Reese
Hi,

Tonight, I'll be migrating from this old Win XP (32 bit) desktop
computer to a new Win 7 (64 bit) laptop. In order to make this as
painless as possible, I hope I can get a few questions answered before
I leap...

I've never yet used the restore from backup function in the Bat, so
this will be a new experience for me. As I try to understand it,
here's what I'm planning on doing...

1. Install a fresh copy of Bat (v4.2.44.2) on the new machine, and
input my registration code.

2. Restore from saved copy of backup (will have this saved on an
external drive)

3. Replace default Mail folder with copy of current Mail folder
(it's nearly 2 GB)

4. Install a new copy of TrueCrypt, move Mail folder into new
TrueCrypt volume in a new location, then set appropriate new Mail
file location within Bat preferences.

I'm hoping this process will yield a perfectly functional clone of
my current Bat setup.

Does all this seem reasonable, so far?

Are there any specific issues/problems I should be aware of in moving
my Bat installation from this Win XP machine to my new Win 7 machine?

Then...

I've been using K9 SPAM filtering for many years now. Will this older
program still work on a Win 7 64 bit machine?

Thanks for any and all comments, recommendations, etc. that you might
be able to offer!

2011-07-10 Thread Jack
Hi,

J I need to move TB from my old computer with XP to my new one with
J Windows 7.

J Using version 4.2.40

TF Those were versions in the past when we recommended to copy
TF directories and registry. V4 does not have the restore problem any
TF more, and I would recommend to use the internal back-up function,
TF install the program on the new computer, and restore from the back-up
TF file.

I gave this a try and it worked for the most part. There is one
problem though. I have over 800 folders in five different accounts. In
one account, the emails for one of the folders and its subfolders did
not get copied. The structure is correct and all other folders copied
correctly but those few are not showing any emails.

The problem seems to be with the path. My old computer uses e:\...
while my new one uses i:\When I start TB on the new one, it says
it can't find e:\ I checked the path setting for that account and
it is set to default, like all of the others. But I tried changing it
by browsing and clicking to the new location but it still fails. If I
restart and view the location in the settings it is correct, but the
errors still occur for those folders and no emails are found.

The email count for the folders is correct, showing there are X number
of emails in each. They are just not visible.

I tried another backup of just that one account and made sure all
sub-folders were selected and the include sub-folders box was checked.
But after restoring, the same thing happened.

If I use the maintenance center and try to repair those folders, it
says it can't be done because the message base doesn't exist.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can try next to get
these missing emails to display?

NZc over 10 years ago.

I think you may have misunderstood me or maybe I don't understand this
list. Is this list considered official support for TB? When I said
official support, I was referring to contacting TB directly, not
posting here. For the last major problem I had with TB I sent an email
to them via their website. They did respond but they couldn't fix the
problem. The last response I received from them said something like,

If that doesn't fix it, we can't help you. This ticket is now
closed.

That is simply not an acceptable answer for a program that is paid
for. There are other reasons that I am unhappy with TB but it doesn't
serve any purpose to list them here.

NZc Thunderbird has it's pluses, but TB! is still the best stand-alone
NZc e-mail client I've ever used.

I suppose it depends upon what you mean by the best. Anyone
following the progress of TB can see a clear pattern of new releases
coming out, which have to be paid for, before problems in the previous
releases have been fixed. I don't hold it against anyone for charging
for their work but they should support it too, which the programmers
do a poor job of. At least that is the way I see based on personal
experience.

I am able to create a backup file. I presume that is the .tbk file.
However, I need more specific guidance about installing a copy of TB

most recent version, or will I avoid headaches by using the version
that I have without upgrading?

Then, will I be prompted to restore during the install process, or do I

If I wait until after the install is complete, do I then just go to

2010-07-14 Thread Sacks, Avram
Thanks, Paul,

Your notes will be very useful. One question I forgot to ask:

Hajdu recommended in response to my questionWhat is the best way to set
up The Bat on a new computer when that computer is attached to a home
network that has 2 computers running The Bat? that I use a backup of TB
from the old laptop rather than from the host pc on which TB is running.
That makes sense, particularly because two filters and subfolders were
created on the old laptop that are not on the host PC's version of TB.
However, I have also observed that the alt F2 command (to download
e-mail from all accounts at once) does not work on the laptop, even
though both the old laptop and the host PC are running the same version
of TB. Since we have about a dozen different e-mail accounts, it is
desirable to be able to download all at once. Is there any way I can
fix this problem without installing a backup of the host pc on to the
old pc and new pc?

Transferring The Bat to new computer on 2 computer network

2010-07-13 Thread Achdut18
Hi, everyone,

What is the best way to set up The Bat on a new computer when that
computer is attached to a home network that has 2 computers running
The Bat? It has been awhile since I added The Bat to a second
computer, so, I don't recall exactly what I did.

Currently, we have The Bat installed on two computers, a desktop and
a laptop. The laptop is being replaced.

The mail directory only resides on the desktop pc. The second computer,
a laptop, has, under Account/Properties/Files and Directories the home
directory pointing to the Mail folder of the desktop pc. Mail is only
downloaded and stored on the desktop. However, the download operation
can be initiated from either the desktop, or the laptop when it is
connected to the network. Mail downloaded by one computer into the
desktop Mail directory can be seen, read, replied to, etc., by either
computer on the network. This setup allows two users on the home
network to have access to the same mail, regardless of which computer
is being used.

What is the best way to install The Bat on the new laptop in order to
retain account settings and allow both users to have the same access
to downloaded mail?

Should I download from the Ritlabs website a new installation of
The Bat and then point the mail directory to the shared Mail folder
on the desktop?

If so, how do I make sure that all of the current settings, including
the address book and 22 filters currently running, work on the new
laptop? I suspect that there are registry entries that would need to
be copied to the new laptop. Is this true?

If so, how do I do that?

The new laptop is running Windows 7 while the other computers are
running Windows XP Pro SP3. Do I need to have the same version of The
Bat running on all of the computers in order to insure that there
won't be any file or registry entry conflicts?

Finally, I am currently using ver. 4.0.18. Is the newest version
ready for prime time? Am I better off staying with ver. 4.0.18?

Thanks for your help.

The way I understand it, the TB! licence is a one-person licence and
not a one-computer licence. This means, when you switch computers, you
can install TB! with the same licence key again. Please do read the
Terms again, this was changed once or twice in the past, I am not sure
about the current legal situation.

ux 2. How do I go about copying the backup archive onto a disc and
ux installing it on my new computer?

Make a full back-up with the internal function ((Options / Backup).
Make sure all checkmarks are in place. Store the resulintg .tbk file
on a disc or USB drive.

When you install TB! on the new computer, you will be asked whether
you want to create a new account or restore from backup. Choose
restore and point to the .tbk file.

Everything should be in place and TB! look exactly as on the old
computer, except for some minor interface settings.

DG pointer to such?

Two ways:

A) Using the internal backup/restore function

While still in the old system, go to Tools / Backup... and click on
everything. This will create a .tbk file.

In the new system, install TB!. You will be asked during installation
whether you want to use a backup, say Yes, navigate to the .tbk file,
and everything should be restored.

In the past, users (including myself) reported that not everything
would be restored (some settings and the addressbook were missing), I
don't know about the current version.

B) Doing it manually

While still in the old system, close TB!. Export the registry key
HKCU_Software_RIT. This will create a .reg file.

Zip the whole TB! directory, with all subdirectories containing mails,
filters, and whatnot. Obviously, this will create a .zip file.

In the new system, install TB!, answering No when asked whether you
want to use a backup (I don't know whether this step is necessary).
Close TB!.

Click on the .reg file to import it into the registry.

Unzip the .zip file into the TB! directory. Everything should be there
when you now open TB!.

Caveat: The second version will only work if you have the same exact
setup, i.e. the same drive letter and path names.

If in doubt, use the internal backup/restore. Minor annoyances of the
backup/restore function may be column sizes, the window split setting,
or that you have to restore the addressbook at a second go. But the
accounts, folders, templates, and mails should be there in any case.

Hi Kitty,
It is my experience that it is easiest to do the following:
1) just install TB! on the new computer.
2) make a FULL backup of TB! on your desktop computer, Tools|Backup
3) Install the backup on your laptop.

Jonathan,
There is one problem with that concept. If you do a backup that way from a
machine were you use a different hardware setup (think Hard drives) to
an other machine, you will ave to change these things manually
afterwards.

When you change from one machine to an other you do not want a identical
copy.

The script is better for a pure backup of one machine because it
includes the registry and the registration keys, but I never had a
problem with that because I still have the original email with the key.

Did you know that if you bring that email in focus you just have to
click registration and your done?

That's correct. If you're able to do this then it makes for a very clean
and trouble free transfer. Otherwise using TB!'s backup and restore on
the new system works quite well when the system setups are different.

G When you change from one machine to an other you do not want a

Actually you would if your account directories are located in the

new system, i.e., C:\Program Files\The Bat!.

Yeah. Neat. :)

You need a backup of the entire Mail folder structure and content. You
also need a backup of the TB registry data. On your new machine,
unpack the mail folder data (NB it is best to stick to the same drive
letter / folder as was used on the old computer), load up the .reg

The problem that I have with Steve's way which is simply
copying the mail folders, installing TB! on the new system, copying
the mail folders to the news system, recreating the accounts and
running ctrl+alt+shift+L for each account to recreate the folder tree,
is that it tends to clean out all the folder specific settings
including the templates. To recreate this involves a lot of work for
me since my signatures and templates are quite diverse.

As far as I have seen if you copy the BAT to a different drive as
before, doesnt matter same system or not, IF the entry is already in
the registry you get problems with disapearing mailboxes and no way to
get them back, even with reinstall unless you remove the bat from the
registry. After that its easy, reinstall, and create same accounts as
before, it will even ask you to create them.

If you copy to a system the bat was never on before, no problem, just
reinstall over where you copied it, same accounts as before.

But in that first case, registry pointing to E and files sitting on F,
you get a big mess, missing boxes etc... Thats what happened to me

This will indeed get things going on the new system just as it
was on the last. This requires that the installation directories and
partitions correspond with the last install. So, if you're like me who
has TB! installed on drive D: and the main mail folder of drive D:
then a registry duplication would be useless if I'm planning to
install on drive C: on the new system and leave the mail folder in the
default location.

Or just create an account with the same name as before. TB! picks up all
the account specific information from the data that was transfered over.
Everything else is really machine specific.

Transfering to new computer?

2000-02-15 Thread Jason Ellis

Hello List,

I'd like some input on how to transfer The Bat and all my e-mail
files/folders/configurations to a new computer. When I was using
Eudora, this was very easy (just copy the mailbox files over and
everything was done). Is there an easy way of doing this with The Bat,
too? I can't possibly leave all my e-mail on my old computer, but I
also can't possible take the hours and hours and hours it would take
to completely re-do the entire setup of my dozen or so e-mail
accounts, either.

Please, any advice would be helpful.

Thanks!

It is best that these not be transfered. Ever try to get a window onto
the screen when you transfer from a machine that has its desktop set to
1600x1200 onto one that has the dekstop set to 800x600. Not fin to
move/resize as needed when most, or all, of the window is not on the screen.
The registry simply contains too much machine specific data to be reliably
imported into another machine. The time spent cleaning up the problems it
causes most often outweighs just simply remaking the few changes that need to
be made in the first place.

Microsoft really needs to look at the unix way of doing it. Never seem to
have problems there.

I transferred all the Bat Folders mail etc to the new computer.
Hoever it is treating it as a new un registered install.

It wont even recognize my mail or folders.

Hello timm,

I found this solution of Syafril Hermansyah:

Create new folder, point the directory to your old folder (or
subfolder), named your new folder (you can named same as before, or
give the new name)...all message comes up.
