Newbie Question....

2000-10-21 Thread Bill Fuller

Hello friends,

I'm a newbie to "The Bat", and so far I'm loving it.
I really like the "Insert Quick Template".
Anyway,
Why is it, when the mail is coming in, the computer locks up for a few
seconds, then unlocks, then locks up again..etc.
The mouse will temporarily freeze up, then will only skip across the
screen very erratically. It seems when the mail is coming in, I can't do

anything else with the computer, until all the mail is in?
Can anyone help?
Also, the same thing happens, when I delete messages from "The Bat".
I appreciate very much, any advice or fixes you can suggest.
Thanks very much,

Newbie question

2002-04-26 Thread Paul Meathrel

Hi all,

I'm currently using a trial version of TB v1.6c, could anyone tell me
if there is anyway to use Norton Antivirus Corporate edition 7.0 to
scan incoming and outgoing email? I have noticed some integration with
AV's, but only AVP.

Cheers,

Paul

Newbie Question

2001-01-03 Thread Tony Blomfield

Hi I have just subscribed to this list. I dont have your product yet, but am
seriously looking for a reliable replacement for Outlook. The emphasis is on
reliable, and particuarly on Reliability of data storage - which is where
Outlook is very weak. I have decided I will not tolerate any longer data
being stored in proprietary format such as PST files.

I wish to store my data specifically in interbase IB6 database. Interbase is
an extremely reliable SQL Database built by Borland Corporation. It is now
Open source under the Mozilla Licence, and is Free. If neccesary I can write
my own interface for an appropriate Email Client. Interbase can run on
Wintel, Solaris, and Linux.

I do not require fancy features. I just want to send and receive Email, and
store up to 500Gb of Email safely on anther machine in an SQL database. An
integrated Spell Checker in English would be a nice extra.

Can someone answer the question IS IT POSSIBLE FOR BAT TO USE INTERBASE?

Thanks in advance,

TonyB.

Dumb newbie question?

2000-01-12 Thread Urban Ek

Hello listmembers,

I've only used the Bat for four days, and I've just discovered the
Mail Dispatcher. A great little utility, but is there a way to
automate it, using filters or something like that?

Thanks in advance,

Hello Bill,

The first thing to try is "Folder -> Purge all Folders"
In your folder options, you might have selected "Keep messages in base
for xx days" and "Maximum number of stored messages." If you did,
Purge executes these conditions and then compresses your folders. If
you did not select these, then Purge only compresses your folders.
When a message is deleted, it doesn't disappear from the message
database. It is simply marked for deletion and you must run a
compress operation to actually remove the message.

If this option alleviates the problem, then I recommend you change the
folder properties for *all* your folders to "Compress the folder on
Exit". Don't forget to change your Inbox, Outbox and Trash.

If this doesn't help your problem, please let us know, and perhaps
give us information such as your processor speed, HD space available,
RAM, Operating system, other programs running, etc.

Re: Newbie Question....

2000-10-21 Thread Bill Fuller

Januk,
That fixed it! Thank you very much.
I Purged all folders and now there is no screen/mouse lockup anymore.
Now, when the mail comes in, everything still works perfect! I can even delete
messages, when the mail is coming in, and still move the mouse like nothing is
happening.
I went into all my folders and clicked on "Compress Folders on Exit".
Thank you very much for the quick response! I'm very impressed.

Idiot newbie question

2003-06-09 Thread Anna
Hi, everyone,

I hate introducing myself as a newbie by introducing my ignorance
first, but that's what I'm going to have to do. I installed TB!
two days ago and, with some help from TB!er Jeanny House, have it
up and running sort of. I do have a problem though that I can't
figure out or find in FAQs or archives.

About three times in four (though not in the initial bootup after
turning on the computer), when I boot up TB!, I get a message
that says "Tasks are active; do you want to exit the program when
they're finished?" and whether I reply Y or N, it exits a few
seconds later. I can't imagine what tasks might be active.

Last night, I got this additional system message (The one with
the famous red/white X): "Access violation at address 006DEF6F in
module 'thebat.exe.' Read of address 0034." (I think I got
the # of zeros right.)

This is proving extremely frustrating to me. Can anyone offer
advice, ideas, or at least a broad surface to whack with a rubber
hammer?

Thanks,
Anna
who knows about commas and semicolons, but not TB!s

I understand that Norton 2002 will scan ANY mailer's messages. I
don't know that for a fact as I have the 2001 version. With TB, I
just put pop3.norton.antivirus in the TB pop slot and provide the
userid and mindspring pop info in the userid slot. See your Norton
writeup to see how to set it up. This keeps the virus completely out
of your machine.

I can confirm that this is the case. I have Norton Internet Security
2002 and it works with TB, scanning incoming and outgoing mail
transparently. I didn't have to set anything up - it just happens.

Yesterday Norton trapped a Klez variant before it even got to TB.

That must have been all over the place yesterday. I saw it twice and
then again about ten minutes ago. I point my mailer to
pop2.norton.antivirus and thus they never make it to my machine let
alone to my mailer util that are disabled/isolated.

Not directly, no, but indirectly it can be done. TB has a very
good filtering system which will allow you do do, well, just
about anything you like to a received message. YOu can easily
export the message and pass it to an external procedure which can
archive it into your SQL database.

Personally, I have > 8 messages from 6 years of email history
in the TB message base (which are split per-folder, a method far
safer and preferable to a single mailbase paradigm). This amounts
to a mere 800mb - rather less than your intended 500gb, but then
I'm not plagued with the M$ bloat bug that would inflate my mail
by that amount.

But this method will be extremely slow... I think we can compare it to

Why not? Look, you want to store some TB data in some SQL database. All
you need is to write some interface module between The Bat! and your
DBMS. This module will translate (proxy) The Bat! core calls to the
internal message base handlers to the valid SQL syntax. In other words
you need to "hook" you module to the TB core. I think that the better
way to do it is to write to RIT Labs and ask them for cooperation.

Not AFAIK. I am reposting this reply to the list in case any of

Yes, although it is pretty easy to export the data to a UNIX
standard MBX format.

No and No.

Only by exporting the data to a medium in which it can be

TB has an Administrator/User mode distinctions and can refer to

tscn> Possibly I need to take the time to write my own Email
tscn> Client App.

It looks like that may be your only route. I have never heard of
an email system (at least one based on an MUA) that stores email
in a SQL standard database. Frankly and professionally I see
little or no point. There is no advantage whatsoever to this.

Sure, M$'s idea of a mailbase is not exactly robust nor clever,
but to stuff email data into a bunch of SQL tables seems like a
waste of space and opportunity.

MUA mailbases are *so* much better able to handle, store, sort
(relevantly), thread, nest, filter, categorise... the list goes
on and on for me.

It seems to me that you should be looking for a decent IMAP
/server/ and letting *that* store your multi-user mail along with
a strong IMAP client. Or perhaps an HTML base mail server, where
the clients access their own areas of a communal mail system via
a web browser.

It would be nice to say "TB will do it for you", but it won't
really. OTOH, I don't think you're looking at the issues 100%
correctly and have been unfairly influenced in this by the poor
behaviour of the M$ offerings in this arena.

Just my 0.02p worth

However, with a mail base of 500GB (if that is not a typo) you will
have two options:

1.) contact RITlabs directly, so they write a proprietary option for
you to store the messages in whatever format you like

2.) write something which is perfectly to your needs.

If you work in Windows, option 1 should be your choice.

If you are in the *nix world, you could look around there but the
MUA's will most likely use .mbx format for reasons of efficiency that
Marck has outlined. So, in the *nix world, option 2 (reinventing the
wheel) might be your choice.

TB> Can someone answer the question IS IT POSSIBLE FOR BAT TO USE INTERBASE?

Just out of curiosity: what do you do? I mean, are you a mail service
provider, mail storage provider, or how does your message base to
500GB? Does this figure include attachments?

RE: Newbie Question

2001-01-03 Thread Tony Blomfield

Thanks for your nice Reply, which I guess tells me about as much as I need
to know for now.

Firstly, the 500Gb should be 50Gb which is a huge difference! To most people
this is a large amount of data. To Outlook98 it is quite impossible. In my
experience Outlook gives up at between .5 and 1 Gb. At 700Mb Outlook just
give it away and permanently corrupted the PST file. Thank god it was not my
primary contact manager!

As for MS Exchange... Words fail me.

What I do is write code - mostly n tiered distributed Database apps with
reasonably large database. I have found over the years that the most
successful engine for storing and accessing data is Interbase - and for the
really big stuff Oracle. It means my Email Data (Contacts, Messages etc) is
available for any other Application I care to write. This ease of data
access has a lot of appeal, and you would have to be fairly one eyed not to
agree with me. I don't care how good your proprietary database is, it simply
can not even begin to compare with the stuff built specifically for storing
database by companies like O and Borland. The robustness of these storage
engines is beyond question.

Now I have a customer who over the next 10 years will certainly accumulate
this size mail box. He wants reliability, Data Integrity, Ease of data
access, and the ability to use the Data in other custom built apps. The mail
is just part of the App I am building, and I was hoping I could use
something already built. Too bad.

Anyway, I take on what you have said, and will re evaluate my position.

Once again thanks for the well formed responses.

When you say automate, what exactly do you mean?

If you mean, "How do I have it open automatically?" Then go to
Account -> Properties -> Mail Management and select the appropriate
options in the Mail Dispatcher Box. (Check it out, and you'll see
it is pretty simple once you find it. Finding where the option
exists is 3/4 of the battle.) :)

 Hope this helped.

Newbie question re: actions

2000-07-23 Thread Arnie

Hello TBUDL,

Just registered TB having decided it (with a few limitations) to be a
wonderful email client. My question regards triggering actions.
Is there anyway to set up TB so that by manually moving a message
from the inbox to another folder an action associated with the
destination folder is immediately triggered? i.e. I move a message
to folder X and that message is immediately replied to using the X
  folder template and sent.

Many of my messages can be filtered, and for those filtering and
templates work perfectly, but sometimes a message comes in that the
  filter can't anticipate.

That's weird, messages like that are supposed to pop up when you close

I can imagine. ;-) I hope this wall is broad enough to whack with any

BTW You started your question as an answer to another thread. That's
not the best thing to do for the following reason.

The Bat is able to thread messages properly, in order to see what I
mean, just select the folder where you're storing the messages from
this list. Go to the menu: view - view threads by - references. Now
you'll see that all messages are lined up after the message to which
they're first, second (or whatever) level replies to.

You started what's essentially a new thread by replying to another
message. That means it shows up as listed in another thread. Since
people sometimes skip messages in threads they don't consider
interesting (for lack of time). They might skip your message too,
since they're not aware of the newly started thread. So next time
you'd do yourself a favor by sending a new message in stead of a
reply, because you're reaching a larger audience and one of those
might have the answer you've been waiting for.

This is not not meant to criticize you, but only to help you
appreciate the options TB offers and to be able to get more effect out
of your efforts.

I must object against my name being abbreviated in this way. And I do
so for two reasons.
First: it's kind of sensitive, because my mother entered me as Roel on
a new school (after we moved) without consulting me before. She liked
it, I hated it and my dad didn't care. That was a horrible thing to do
to 14 year old. Two years and a school later things were corrected. As
for now only my classmates from 26 years ago are excused for calling

Second: another listmember calls himself Roel, so it's best not to mix

subfolder templates (newbie question)

2003-07-22 Thread Jenny Horn
Hi everybody,

I use a folder tree with several levels of subfolders. For each new
subfolder I create, the subfolder templates are the same as the default
ones defined in the Account Properties dialog box, unless of course I
change them manually afterwards. However, I'd prefer subfolder templates to
be the same as the templates of the direct parent folder (again, unless I
change them manually).

E.g. The account I've set up has a set of standard templates [A]. I've
created a folder B with a different set of templates [B]. Now every new
subfolder I create under folder B uses the A templates, but should ideally
use the B templates by default. How can I do this?

TB version 1.62r, Win 2000.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Check the "'ORDER'" the filters are in. The very last filter can be a
catch all and delete everything, The First filter should be like
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]" the last filter is like "FFA" (free for all
links those spammers)

Check your syntax, Like "RIT" and "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" Will get
snagged up the same filter, if you don't watch that syntax.

Take your time with your filters, and be especially carefull on the
"killfile" filters, they are especially powerful.

No, you can't associate another action with the act of manually
moving a message to a particular folder. Your only answer is with
filtering.

As others said, you can't associate an action with a folder. But
there's a workaround. You may define a *manual* filter (so it won't
be triggered automatically), with no filter string (i.e., it would
match any message), assigned to it the destination folder and
actions you want, and associate it with a hotkey from the [Option]
pane. Remember to check the [Check the selected messages against
this rule] option! Now, instead of moving the messages to the folder
by drag-n-drop (or menu command) after selecting them, you press the
hotkey you defined, and it's done.

I believe I'm already doing something like that. If anyone sends me
a PGP key request it's moved into a folder called "PGP requests" so
that I can keep track of who requests my keys. At the same time a
reply is auto generated from a predefined template containing a text
file and my PGP key and it's put in the outbox.

I don't have anything to do with it other than to read the messages
that are put in the PGP request folder.

If you use the "Send auto reply" under the Actions tab you can define
a template according to your needs.

Newbie Question On Simple Mailing List

2000-10-14 Thread Jim Steiner

Hello All!

This has to be a stupid question, but ... HELP!

I'm a newly-converted Eudora Pro user, trying The Bat! as a
replacement. I've pulled in my EP address book, and checked the
addresses, nicknames and all.

When I try to send a message to my "jokes" list, they don't send. If
I try each nickname one at a time, they send properly.

Does anyone have a clue as to what I'm doing wrong?

Thnaks for listening.

Jim

I use filters posted by Marcus Ohlström, you can find them in the
archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg36630.html

Is it possible to switch off the 'Are you sure?' window which appears when

When you specify the name of a group as a recipient it should appear

Wow! Did that change then? Mind you, I've never sent to a group like
that. I have a Jokes group as it happens but I never send to them
en-masse because the jokes always originate from one of the members
and have already been sent to at least two others on that list. So its
down to careful selection .

Yeah. If you simply type the group name, TB! checks the address book and
if there's such a group, is appended to the group name
automatically. So is I type 'tbudl' and move to another field the To
field info changes to 'tbudl '. If a corresponding list handle
name isn't found, then TB! will protest when you try to send the
message.

Maybe what Jim is doing wrong is entering the group name instead of the
group handle name.

Re: Newbie Question On Simple Mailing List

> I defined the "list" by having the handle "jokes", and using the

Ok, where did you define the list? Did you just create a contact with
all these addresses listed?

If you did, there is a better way. In your address book,

1. create a group (Edit -> Create group)
2. Give it a name and a handle. Deselect "Hide items if not
   explicitly selected.
3. Now in the left hand side of the address book, you'll have a tree
structure. Expand the tree and select the top level.
4. From the right hand side, choose your contacts you want to add to
the group. Drag them to the group on the left hand side.
5. Now when you create a new message, type in the group's handle.
When you Tab out of the To: field, TB will expand the addresses to
   handle

Although it looks like TB will attempt to send to an invalid address,
the list is substituted before hitting your mail server. If you
include yourself in the group, you'll see what I mean.

> I'm guessing there was a better/easier way to do this, but I haven't
> figured it out, yet!

Yep, there is. See above. I'll just reiterate that you should
include yourself in all groups. That way you'll see exactly what
everyone else sees. If you just look at the copy in your Sent folder,
"handle " is not expanded to all the addresses. I think this is
so resending the message is more convenient.

Well, I don't think I was completely clear. If I type the group's
handle, TB auto completes so it looks like:

handle

Unfortunately, TB does not expand this to the entries in the copy that
goes to the sent folder. While this is probably so resending a
message becomes easier, it would be nice to be able to use a macro to
toggle the behaviour.

Dumb newbie question on mailing list use

2001-05-05 Thread Andreas Völp

I've set up the mailing list program to send me the new threads and
messages in the Digest version. In these digests, I can only see the
e-mail addresses of the contributors, but there appears to be no way
of sending a reply to the group.

How can I reply to a tread so that my mail goes to the list and not to
the conrtibutor's private e-mali address?

You might want to use a workaround: Select all messages in list (Ctrl+A)
and then mark all as read (Ctrl+M). If you have threaded view on, you must
first open all threads (Ctrl+*) :-( Still works very quickly as you don't
even have to take your hand off the Ctrl button ;-)

Re[2]: Newbie Question On Simple Mailing List

2000-10-15 Thread Jim Steiner

Advanced Warning: This Writer May be Misusing Terms As Defined in
"Bat" Language.

I defined the "list" by having the handle "jokes", and using the
handles of the individuals, all of whom are in the address book.

It seemed that, when trying to send, The Bat! was passing on the
handles to my ISP's server, rather than the email addresses associated
with the handles.

If I type handles one at a time, The Bat! "translates them to the
email address.

What I did to empty my Outbox was to edit my "jokes" list and cut and
pasted the email addresses in, eliminating the handles. This worked,
but seems like the long way around creating a list.

I'm guessing there was a better/easier way to do this, but I haven't
figured it out, yet!

Re[2]: Newbie Question On Simple Mailing List

2000-10-15 Thread Jim Steiner

I'm missing something here, because when I create a message to the
"jokes" list, I key in "jokes" and TAB on, all the individual email
addresses appear.

The easiest way I can think of is to highlight what you want to forward,
press Ctrl-C, & then use a template which uses %CLIPBOARD rather than
%QUOTES. I think. But then I'm no expert on these things. Maybe somebody
else will have a better idea :-)

Permanently or on a per message basis?

If permanently, you have to work on your forward template. Inserting
the original text using the %Text macro should do it.

If you want to edit a single message, take a look at the bottom row of
the editor. The third box from the left probably says "Stream". Change
it (by clicking on it) to "Column". Now you can cut - and paste if you
want to - entire columns.

Did that help?

Correct, I missunderstood your request. I suppose it can be done with
some regex's, but I can't help you here.

Strangely enough, looking through my quick templates, it appears I
have a recursive template that can be easily adapted to do the job. I
won't bore the rest of this list with the details, but if there is
interest expressed on TBTECH, I can post it there.

I believe the server automatically sets the return address to the
group addy. However, you can always create a QT using %TO="" or
  %REPLYTO="". HTH

There's a great little program called eCleaner that'll do this in a
couple of mouse clicks. You copy what you want to "clean," open
eCleaner and click on the appropriate icon (a >> with a circle and
slash through it). It takes out the >> and copies the cleaned-up
version to clipboard.

Hello Jeanny,

Thanks. I will take a look but I was hoping to still find a way to do
it in the program. My old email software, Calypso, used to do it for
me. The Bat seems far more powerfull so I am lost as to why it "can't"
be done. :)
