At the time of writing HTML formatting had apparently been fixed in
the latest versions. The BugTraq report has even been closed.

Since then, I too have been disappointed to see images swelling the
HTML again and have reported this to the developers. My apologies for
the mislead - entirely unintentional, I assure you. I will be pressing
RITlabs to re-open the bug report to allow further investigation of
the issue.

Marck,

I've now upgraded from v6.8.8 to v7.3.12, but not all the "extra wide"
emails are reformatted to fit inside the message pane of the triple-pane

Marck,

That sounds excellent news. One of my bug-bears with The Bat! was the way
that it sometimes failed to render an HTML email in a sufficiently readable
way when the sender was cavalier with the sizes of the images they supplied
and slack with the HTML code they used to define their output/display.

I hope that this fix has also been replicated into the way emails are then
printed. Even if the Windows OS HTML Viewer rendering option is chosen the
printing rendering reverts back to that of The Bat! HTML Viewer rendering.

I'll now put in for an Upgrade licence fron v6.x to v7.x.

Thanks

Essentially, yes.

I wouldn't know whether or not they look "correct" since I haven't
compared. All I can say for certain is that this specific bug was
called out as a bug, addressed a month or so back in the beta version
and has been fixed. This fix has improved my personal reading of HTML

I had trouble too (and this will happen every so often) Run it as administrator
- either right click the icon on the desktop or the RT screen and you will be
presented with that option. Once it runs that way you can run it normally after
that ... until the next time. You can even do this from the program icon if you
wish. If that doesn't work, check the permissions on the l folder and all it's
sub containers and even if administrators have full access, add yourself
specifically with full access

executable file. To fix it you need to use another version."

With that and Fedara's advice above, I upgraded to 5.0.36 and --

Interestingly, an earlier upgrade from version 4.2.42 to version
4.2.44.2 (with, presumably, an updated executable file) did not
resolve the issue.

FWIW, I had this problem once. Restarting TB! helped, but some

Do you have any anti-virus / anti-trojan program scanning your

Hi Code,

Code> in module 'thebat.exe'. Read of address 3290F25C

Code> I use The Bat! version 4.2.44.2.

Never had such problem.

I would make a full Backup of TB! and remove/reinstall a client to the
same version I use (or/and first I would try v5 to see if there is
still a problem). Don't forget to mark 'Store external attachments in
message body'.

Removing of entries in the registry when TB! is uninstalled might be
good as well but I do hate manual play with registry... make a
registry backup prior to playing with it so you have a chance to
restore it. As for clearing registry probably other people here can
tell you much more.

If you want to go back later on to v4 I would use an original TBK
backup rather than the one from v5 and added manually received/send
out e-mails. To make it easier I would install TB! v5 without internet
connection and created rules to save EML messages on Receive and on
Send in separated folders (in that way if you decide to go back to v4
and get e-mails you send/received while on v5 it's just enough to Drag
And Drop e-mails from a folder on HDD into a proper folder in TB! (in
my case it would be RECEIVED GENERAL and SEND GENERAL - I move all
e-mails to one folder before filtering - and apply filtering CTRL+F).

I would make a copy of TB! folder as well - worked for me before to
manually swap data into newly installed TB!. Just in case.

If reinstalled v5 and v4 are still not working properly I would
reinstall OS (it's fast for me because I restore it from OS image
to about 90% of what I use daily ; about 30min for restore process and
about 1-2 hour for downloading OS and other software updates). If you
need to reinstall all the stuff it will take much longer.

If you can make a try first on other machine with importing your TBK
and checking if it all works good on other computer I would recommend
it prior to removing it from your machine. On a clean computer TB!
should work properly after TBK is imported. If you install it on a
clean machine use 3rd party program to monitor which parts of registry
are modified (it will help you to get this part out of registry on
your computer).

That would be all on my side ; sorry, but nothing else comes to my
mind.

I posted this problem here last month and I have not found a solution.
Technical Support hasn't responded to my trouble ticket. Here's a
recap.

I am unable to send mail and I am getting the following error message
in my account log:

5/1/2012, 12:08:09: SEND - Access violation at address 00405D77 in
module 'thebat.exe'. Read of address 3290F25C

It used to be infrequent and random, but it is happening almost all
the time, now. It occurs across all my mail accounts regardless of
SMTP server. I can receive mail with no trouble. Restarting The Bat!,
rebooting, and disabling my firewall and anti-virus applications have
no effect.

I use The Bat! version 4.2.44.2.

Can anyone suggest a solution?

I suspect that the icon is in the "show hidden icons" area (arrow
to the left of the system tray).

Click on that arrow, choose Customize and find The Bat! entry. It
is probably set to "Show only notifications". Change it to "show

Not over here. Such problems can occur when the connection to the

You're right, when TB! cannot connect for whatever reason, it should
timeout. Check this setting:

Account / Transport / Server Timeout

It is seet to 60 seconds here. I sometime get the message "Some
messages were not sent - check log for details", and the reason is
"cannot connect to server". So it seems to work.

I can confirm it on sorting of messages which contained a pure e-mail address
without the name associated with this address. We have fixed this and in the

Are you purging via "folder maintenance" or automatically via the
"on exit" settings on the folder properties/additional tab?

The "on exit, compress" checkbox used to be selected by default
when you created a folder but not any more. Don't know if this
applied to the "remove old messages" box.

Are the old messages read or unread? There is a setting somewhere that
only read messages are deleted, but that can be switched.

However, today's messages should not be deleted, and it doesn't happen

Dear Code 2,

I am glad you espied this indicative and delicate detail. I do suggest,
in this particular message, having the "Check that The Bat! is the
default mail client at startup" box unchecked due to my estimation of
Susanne's estimation and ability to make a quality choice, with regards
to mailer in this case. I assumed therefore that Susanne's default
mailer is already TBat, and hence that she wouldn't like to be bothered
by an "Am I your favorite mailer? Am I! Am I! Kiss me! Hug me!" just any
time she starts her default mailer.

There is, again, a theoretical chance that my estimation is incorrect
indeed, but I doubt.

I made wrong estimation some 35 years ago, then again some 20 years ago
and then again yesteryear at the beginning of spring (cleaning).

So, basically, I am a man who makes very few bad estimations, and
besides not so often.

That is weird. I collect my private mail in the office with
Voyager) and when I go home, I can still collect them onto my home
computer.

I collect my office email at home, and when I'm in the office next
day, all mails that are not on the computer yet, will be downloaded.

That is as expected. I don't know how come TB didn't download the
mails it itself hadn't downloaded yet; it should not matter whether
they had been downloaded by Agent or another client, or read in the
webinterface, before. Since this happened a few years back, I don't
think we can solve this mystery now.

If I remember correct, gmail has an option to keep all messages on the

That doesn't explain why you can't download the mails you want, but
maybe someone else has got a clue if its related.

The way to do this as I see it is TBs message dispatcher.

I understand that the POP protocol doesn't know "read" or "unread". If
I read messages on my provider's web interface, they will still be
downloaded by TB. TB keeps its own list (by way of UID) of messages
already downloaded, and I can read them in the web interface and on my

Actually, I like that.

You can get headers for all your messages. Admittedly that'll take a

None with TBs backup and that sizes - but what happens when you set up a
similar backup event with ntbackup? You could compare the results of the

It looks like you're trying to download a virus infected message that
your virus scanner intercepts when TB stores it in your temp
directory.
Because the message gets intercepted, TB can't download it and the CC
gets hung. Because the CC hangs the connection with the server isn't
terminated as it should and the server doesn't delete the messages TB
marked to be deleted on the server. So far not good but
understandable.
Try to check your mail with the dispatcher:
Account -> Dispatch mail on server -> All messages
The dispatcher offers you a way to communicate 'manually' with the
server. Select all messages you've already downloaded to be deleted on
the server, do the same with the first message you didn't download
properly, as it's likely that that's the culprit.
When you're done logoff from the server and make TB collect the mail
again and see whether it goes fine.
The only thing that could troubles in this scenario is that you might
have set TB to collect mail immediately on startup, when you've done
so try to cancel mail collection or configure TB not to do that
anymore:
Account -> Properties -> Options -> Check mailbox at start-up

I'm not an expert on these things, but my guess is the server is telling TB
that your POP session is locked and it's just relaying the message. I'd check
out the server side. Maybe the last session you run at night is staying locked
for some reason.

I just received another message from Korea. It all looked like Korean
characters in the header pane and the body. Once I right-clicked and
manually chose "Western European" as charset, all showed fine in
English. Reopening the message shows that the manually chosen charset
is sticky.

Manually switching back to Korean shows the headers with a Korean
charset again (this is wrong, as they are in plain ASCII), but the
body in the plaintext part is legible, and the HTML part shows Korean
character encoding again. (The message is written entirely in
English).

It's a multipart message, and here are the encodings:

It works for me, even with my regexp in it:

   %SETPATTREGEXP="[^ [EMAIL PROTECTED] ]+"%-
   %SetHeader("To","%REGEXPMATCH='%OSUBJ'")

Thank you very much. I bought TB right for this function, I need it to handle

Sorry, I forgot I'm posting with Agent+Gmane instead of TB. I ended out with
two signatures.

IMHO, it is not TB bug. Reply is reply to original address and you
can't erase it from new header. You can you "create new msg" and place
into msg body original body transformed by regexp. It is only my

Er ... no. I need a true reply.

The above is just an example, to make things more simple here. The real filter
would include a regexp in place of "address of mine", to pick addresses from
the original message I want TB to reply to.

I think the above example is valid, and it seems to show a bug in TB. Can

The help on both lists is great! The English list has much more traffic

Jenny, I am not Henk ( :) ) but I know that I am not bouncing at
Yahoo, because 80 per cent of my posts are reaching the TBOT (The Bat

These are random failures, for me. Most puzzling.

For the past week I have been receiving Returned Mail for some of the
messages I have sent to TBOT, which is also a yahoogroups list. Since
the messages were mostly banter, and also depended for effect on
timely appearance in the thread I was participating in, I did not
bother about it but simply deleted my "returned mail" notification.

Some of these were "will retry" notifications and several were
"permanent failure" notifications. Half a dozen or so in all. I will
save the next one in case it would help track down the problem.

The last was this morning, for a message I had sent to TBOT on July 4.

Some of my messages to TBOT did get through. I could not see any
common characteristic in those which did not.

I don't know, additionally, what wanadoo and comcast.net might have in
common.

I'm not sure whether this is OT for TBUDL or not; but, where else can
we check it out, since TBOT is not reliable?

I'm sorry now that I deleted those previous failed-mail notifications.
:(

This one is OK, but also many of yours with RIPEMD160 digest.

This is more of a function of GPG. Basically you need to create a

Not here. You can switch off the GMX spam filter, if you want. But I
suspect that you need to go through your spam filter settings, as it
works fine over here.

You can also set it so that it sends you a daily mail with the
From/To/Subject headers of the mails filtered into the spam folder. I
do this to check for false positives. The spam mails are kept for 30
days, and when you see a false positive you can update the filter by
clicking on "Nicht als Spam behandeln" in the web interface. This will
update the Bayesian filter.

It happened to me recently. Many messages were not in the message
bases although they were displayed as downloaded in the accounts
logs. In fact, it came from defective filters. NFS is still very
buggy, and it seems that if messages incorrectly trigger several
filters, they can just be left in Windows temp directory instead of
being moved to their proper place.

Just have a look at you windows temp directory. If you see it filled
with bat*.tmp files, you found your lost messages!

Just rename them to .eml and import them using the Tools/Import
messages function. Now correct your filters and re-filter the
messages.

This sounds to me as if the spam filtering via plugin happens before the
"regular" filters kick in, thus no re-filtering will work. I don't know the
filtering system of v3, however, and if it differs from v2 in that manner.

SS> Is there any clues"?

A couple of things ...

1.) did you train it with lots of *not* spam? It is at least as
important to show it what is not spam as it is to show it spam.

2.) You mentioned restoring TB from a back up and later that you are
using ver 3. Did you have an anti spam that you were using in that old
"back up" version? You need to be meticulous in removing all traces of
the old plug-in. Un-install it, clear out all the data files and
directories that it created (there was data in the program tree as
well as in the data tree on my 'Bayesit' anti-spam plug-in), re-add in
the plug-in and now go retrain it.

Not sure what problem you are having with filters ... are you sure
that they are set correctly? I have ... at various times ... made
mistakes on what I was filtering, where I was filtering, what action I
was taking, etc.

If they are 'hold overs' from the earlier version, you might try
deleting all the filters and then putting them back in one at a time
to see if maybe something was corrupted in the conversion/upgrade.

This is a long one...

Log on as an administrator.

First, turn off "Simple File Sharing." To do this, open a directory.
Then click on the "Tools" menu. Select "Folder Options." In the dialog
box, select the "View" tab. Scroll down to the bottom of the list and
un-check "Use simple file sharing." Click the "Apply to All Folders"
button. If needed, click "Yes." Then click "OK."

Create a directory to hold your mail directories, for example
"C:\MAIL". When you are in that folder, right click on some empty
space and select "Properties." Click on the "Security" tab. Click on
the "Advanced" button. Un-check the first checkbox, "Inherit from the
parent..." In the box that comes up, click "Remove." Then click "OK."
Back at the "Security" tab, click the "Add" button. In the text box,
type "SYSTEM; Administrators" (NB: These names need to be in German
for you, so you might have to click "Advanced" and then "Find Now" to
get a list of all the users on your computer. Be sure to add the
SYSTEM account and the Administrators group). Those two security
principles will appear in the upper box. Click on each one and in the
lower box check "Full Control" in the "Allow" column. Click "OK."

Then, create a sub directory for each user in that directory, for
example "C:\MAIL\Steve", "C:\MAIL\Clare", etc.

Select one of the directories. For this example, we will use Steve's
directory, "C:\MAIL\Steve". Right click on that directory and select
"Properties." Click on the "Security" tab. Click on the "Add" button.
Enter Steve's username in the box. Click "OK." Select Steve's security
principle in the upper box and check "Full Control" in the "Allow"
column. Click "OK." Repeat with the other directories as needed.

Log off. As another user (Steve, fox example), log on. Open The Bat!
Open the "Options" menu. Then select "Preferences". Click on "System"
on the left. Click on "Browse" and select the appropriate directory
from "C:\MAIL". For Steve, this directory is "C:\MAIL\Steve". Repeat
with the other users as needed.

There are many modifications on this theme. Also, permissions can be
set very finely. Experiment. If you run into a problem, the
Administrator account should be able to fix the mistakes. However, you
may need to take control of the file or folder to do so.

NB: Some of the English terms may not translate well into German. Try
your best.

You have run into the same problem I ran into.

Create a shared directory that both the administrator and the limited
user have full control over. Then change the "Mail Directory" in The
Bat! (found under Options -> Preferences... -> System) for both users.

You can apply a modified principle of this and allow any user on the
computer to use The Bat! separately from the other users.

I am 100% sure that this is TheBat! problem. I've tried to paste Russian
text from TheBat! to IE, Opera adress prompts, Outlook Express, UniRed
(all these programs supports unicode) -- instead of Cyrillic characters I
get question marks. Copying/pasting Russian text between these programs
works just fine. Even when I trie to copy/paste Russian text from one The
Bat! window to another, I get question marks.

Does not make any difference.

> I've tried to do it with KOI8-R.

To say the most important thing at first: I do not have an answer to
the question.

But here come some elements to understand what is going on and a
workaround:

The question marks are often a sign that there is somewhere in the
chain an application which is not aware (or not fully aware) of unicode (UTF-8).

If it were a simple problem of representing the cyrillic characters
properly, there would not be question marks but rather some character
salad like "Òàêèå ïèñüìà íàçûâàþòñÿ ñïàìîì". But in your case the text is
not only rendered wrongly, but even destroyed.

When you copy and paste something from one place to another the
copied and pasted text passes through the Windows clipboard. That is
why the problem might occur at (at least) 3 different stages: A first
question is whether the Windows clipboard understands Unicode at all
(if not, everything is considered to be in your system's default
codepage).
Then there might be transmission problems when putting things from TB
to the clipboard and later also when the text is transmitted from
the clipboard to the other application.

From Windows 2000 onwards the clipboard fully supports unicode. That
means that your problem is not there. If you are having this problem
when you copy *from* TB not only to *one* particular application, but
to *different* other applications, it is probable that not all the
other applications cause the same problem, but that the problem starts
already when you copy from TB.

TB is not fully UTF-8 aware. As you probably noticed, TB can read
(receive) European characters which are UTF-8 coded (but not Asian
characters), and it is completely unable to write (send) UTF-8 coded
messages.

But I do not know what TB does exactly (and what it should do) when
text is copied to the clipboard.

This is only what I know about these things. But there should be
people out there on the list who know more about this !

One last thing you might try (but I have little hope) is to copy not
from a KOI8-R coded message, but from a Windows coded message (Windows
1251). This might make it a little easier to get the copied text drom
TB to the Windows clipboard.

Now comes the workaround:
Instead of copying from TB you can save the Russian text from the
email-body to an external file (*.txt) (Messages -> Save as). The
result is a text file which is encoded "Windows cyrillic". If you open
it in the Notepad you probably get character salad (already better
than question marks). But when you open it in a more skilled text
editor ('Word' or whatever) you get your text correctly decoded.

In this case this has nothing to do with the skills of TB, but with
the probability that the people who read your message have ISO-8859-13
loaded or not. TB supports it, but I guess most of us on TBUDL don't
have it loaded.
There are plenty of ISO charsets which do not come the standard
distribution package. What I like with TB is that you can add yourself
charsets you need.

Two questions:

1) What is the default codepage of your Windows version?
   Baltic? Cyrillic? Central European?

2) What is the charset of the message you were trying to copy from?
(= How is the Cyrillic text [which you want to copy] encoded?)
