reading confirmation

2009-05-27 Thread Privateofcourse
Hello TBUDL,

How can I prevent SPAM messages from automatically generating reading
confirmations and immediately queuing them in the outbox? It's beginning to
 irritate me.

I use a separate SPAM POP3 account under cPanel as the default address for
all of my domains. All SPAM and unrouted mail gets forwarded to this
account and periodically I collect it in TB! and check it before deleting
it. As I hardly get any SPAM at all nowadays, due to the way I have my mail
set up, it's not a mega burden, but I do sometimes get an influx of about
10 SPAM emails in a week, and some of them are automatically generating a
reading confirmation which is immediately queued in the SPAM account's
outbox. I then have to empty the outbox, which is getting on my pip!

Is there a surefire way to prevent TB! from creating these without any
 repetitive intervention?

Is there any way to initiate a read confirmation when none is asked
for by the sender (short of a reply/macro confirmation message which
involves several keystrokes)?

Reading Confirmation

2003-11-13 Thread David Anderson
Hi,

Is it possible to set up an address book entry so that an automatic
reading confirmation receipt is sent to that particular user? I have a
general reading confirmation set in account details, but there doesn't
seem to be anything to set for an individual recipient.

You can set to ignore reading confirmations, either for the whole
email account or for individual folders.

Right click on the folder and choose Properties - Templates -
Confirmation and then click in the circle for Ignore.

For the whole account, Account - Properties - Templates - Reading
Confirmation - Ignore.

Reading Confirmation Warning

2016-08-12 Thread Tony Hoare
Hi Bats!,

I often get Reading Confirmation Request on an email that TB! kindly puts in
the Outbox - which I never send.

However, I have just sent myself an email with a reading request on it. I read
it and immediately got a Read DSN report. The TB! Reading Confirmation receipt
is still sitting in my Outbox.

This is a major surprise for me as I thought I never sent Read Receipts. I am
now presuming that the IMAP server does this itself and not the client as I
previously thought.

This is true for outlook.office365.com using IMAP but does not happen on my
self-hosted Postfix/Courier setup.

Confused!

In TB's main window Cntl+Shft+S will bring up 'Sorting Office' for the
account you are in commonly known as 'Filter'. Account | Sorting/Office
Filters will do the same. Create a 'Read messages' filter with '.' as
the string and leave the 'Inbox' as 'Source' and 'Move' folders. On the
'Actions' tab select 'Create Reading Confirmation (forced)', and on the
'Options' tab select 'Execute action set of this rule by pressing the
Hot Key:' and hit the keys you want.

Or conversely just copy this filter and paste it into your office
filters under 'Read messages'.

No not if you set it up as a 'Read messages' filter.

If you mean 'e' as in email, then yes with the your designated hot key.

You can use the filter how ever you want, however you may want to edit
your 'Reading confirmation' template under the 'Account properties'
(Shft+Ctrl+P) or Account | Properties.

Hello John,

> If you just received a confirmation Greg, it worked! Thanks again.

Well not yet. You have to be careful with using the confirmation with
list messages. I ran under test with the default 'Reading confirmation'
template on a TBUDL message. It replies to the list, so I think the
'Reading confirmation' template sends to the 'Reply-To:' address. On
TBUDL this is [EMAIL PROTECTED] I would think you wouldn't be
using with list mail, so the address should be ok.

You'd set that up in the Sorting Office/Filters not the Address Book.
Create a new filter to filter against the particular email address you

Reading Confirmation setting

Hi,
Is there a way to check whether a message that has already been
sent from The Bat! was mailed with the 'Reading Confirmation' option
selected? I don't recall if I set this option in a message I recently

course, there's also the possibility that his e-mail client is not
configured to return receipt requests but I don't know for sure.

Thanks for the help in advance!

Reading Confirmation Bug?

2002-03-11 Thread Gene Gough

I received a note today with a request for reading confirmation. I
have kept that note in my inbox as a reminder of some action that I
have to take. Now every new note into my inbox causes the attempted
send of a reading confirmation of that first note. I have sent one
just to see if it would stop this but it made no difference. It
also doesn't matter if the new note has been filtered to a different
folder or not, any attempt to read it will result in the prompt for
confirmation on the first note above.

BUG - Reading Confirmation

2002-04-19 Thread Nick Danger

I have Reading Confirmation set to "Put in Outbox / Prompt before
action" for my business account as I like to be in control of the
thing. I also read mail using the preview mode/view.

Here's what happens:

If I'm reading a message in my business account and then click down
into my personal account to read something, that's when the prompt for
the reading confirmation pops up, as it doesn't pop up until you
remove focus from the message.

However, this way the confirmation message actually gets placed into
my personal account's outbox along with it picking up all of that
account's settings. Not good.

As much as I love the way TB! lets you change accounts on the fly I'm
finding more and more instances where it doesn't do it thoroughly
enough and "mixes" commands between them.

Reading confirmation templates

2001-01-25 Thread Marck D. Pearlstone

Greetings Bat Fans,

David Elliott and I just noticed a bit of a horror in the default
reading confirmation template.

It says:

==8<=
%OToFName will answer when time permits
==8<=

BUT! If the confirmation is sent out by a CC or secondary addressee
then the confirmation is sent out with *the wrong name* there. I got a
confirmation from my colleague Trevor who had received a CC'd message
and it claimed that "David will answer". How can Trevor possibly know
that?

As David said, it should be

==8<=
%FromFName will answer when time permits
==8<=

Check the receiving account for the settings how to react on a read
confirmation:
  Account -> Properties -> Templates -> Reading confirmation -> Action: ?
My favourite setting is 'Ignore'
And whether a confirmation will be sent, is set in the receiving
account.

Under Filter/Actions I don't see "Create Reading Confirmation (forced)"

I would like a hot key to initiate a confirmation to any message in

Sometimes things are buried deep in the menus. Open Sorting Office,
choose the Actions tab, and scroll down. The options on the actions
tab are:

Mark as read

Thanks Bill. They sure are buried! I must learn not to ignore scroll
bars! What will that 'forced confirmation' do? Will it confirm
*every* message arriving at that folder?

My initial question remains - can I 'force' a confirmation on any
specific e in the whole account? Sometimes I might want to assure
someone that the e has been read and will be answered later even
though the message is from a new contact whose e filters to 'Inbox'.

Well the only way I can think of right now is to go to the sent
mail folder, locate the mail and look in header of that e-mail.

Reading Confirmation - Wrong Folder

2002-02-15 Thread Raj

Fellow TB users,

Well I am not sure if this is a beta issue If so please ignore and accept my
apologies.

I'm using The Bat! Version 1.54 Beta/30
  Serial Number F719CC74
under Windows NT 5.0 Build 2195 Service Pack 2
and would like to report a bug

  The bug description:

  Reading confirmation in wrong outbox.

  Steps to reproduce the bug:

Send a mail which needs reading confirmation. Then after reading the mail
click a folder in a different account. Assuming you have the option of confirm
"Reading Confirmation" in the account/folder properties, a pop window will
come asking for confirmation. When clicking 'Yes' the reading confirmation is
put in the out box of the current account instead of the account to which the
message came. However the 'from' address remains same as the original account
or the account to which the message was addressed.

Speaking of reading confirmations, I've debated on setting up nasty

insist on turning that on for _every_ single email they send -- even
after very polite suggestions off-list. (Not this list, I assure you,

My only fear, and the reason I haven't done this yet, is that some one
would to start considering these auto-replies as UCE, when they're
obviously not, and get myself black-holed.

You know, sometimes it REALLY ticks me off when I get the spam in my
e-mail In-box. Part of me wishes I could somehow FILL their e-mail
In-box so it crashes.

Someone else in this forum mentioned reporting the e-mail address to a
spam "collection" web site to complain. I nice idea in theory, but
you can get another anonymous e-mail address in minutes and these
people can never be caught. I just decided that it is far easier on
my blood pressure to just press the DELete key and get on with life.

Hello Jens,

This is what you said on Sun, 28 Sep 2008 02:03:21 +0200 your time:

> It is not working or it is not usable. (nicht unnütz)

It is not working!

1) Sender A sends email to recipient B: Sender A includes a reading
confirmation request and delivery confirmation request.

2) Recipient B receives and reads the email from Sender A and, in The Bat!,
is prompted to allow reading confirmation when highlighting another email or
deselecting the read email. So recipient B clicks okay.

3) Sender, and now recipient, A, does not get a reading confirmation NOR do
they get a delivery confirmation.

So I'd say that this feature has become broken...well in TB! it is. Of
course haven't tried sending to a another client.

I have been using TB I have never seen it fail.

> 1) Sender A sends email to recipient B: Sender A includes a reading
> confirmation request and delivery confirmation request.

Reading confirmation request and delivery confirmation request or two
different things. RCR is 'targeted' to the recipient and DCR is targeted
to the mail server where the recipient has his mail account and
mailbox. Now, my experience along the years is that there are many mail
servers that simply ignore DCRs, and the recipient can't do anything
about that.

> 2) Recipient B receives and reads the email from Sender A and, in The
> Bat!, is prompted to allow reading confirmation when highlighting
> another email or deselecting the read email. So recipient B clicks
> okay.

> ...in The Bat!, is prompted to allow reading confirmation

He is prompted, or not, and the confirmation is sent, or not, depending
in the settings in:

  Account->Properties->Templates->Reading confirmation

> ...when highlighting another email or deselecting the read email.

,- [ As I have written in TBBeta about this issue: ]
|
| The 'Reading Confirmation Receipt' is sent (or queued to Outbox) when
| the message is 'marked as READ'.
|
| Now, when is a message marked as Read? That depends on a couple of
| configuration options:
|
| 1.- In Account->Properties->Options
| - Mark the message as read when it is being read for X Secs
| - Mark the message as read only when it is open in a separate window
|
| 2.- In Options/Preferences/Message List
| - Go to the next unread message with the SmartSpace reading
| - Mark the current message as read when navigating away from it
|
| In my case I have none of the four options ticked because I want to
| decide when I have read each message. So, I use the shortcut 'Ctrl+M'
| (actually 'Space', which I have configured in Customiser).
`-

> 3) Sender, and now recipient, A, does not get a reading confirmation NOR do
> they get a delivery confirmation.

As mentioned above, delivery confirmation depends on the mail server
ignoring the request, or not.

And in regards to reading confirmation: Was it actually sent, or perhaps
just queued in Outbox or perhaps just ignored? As mentioned above, that
may depend on the settings in:

   Account->Properties->Templates->Reading confirmation

If the confirmation was actually sent, it should appear in your Sent
Mail folder unless moved or deleted by some Outgoing filter. And if it
was actually sent and the recipient (original sender who requested the
confirmation) didn't receive it... Could it be that he uses some filters
or Spam scheme that flag it as Spam or perhaps even delete it?

I am also using AVG 8.0 (since this is able to install on FAT32 now)
with scanning in/outbound but only with attachments.

I tested it with myself, and after trying to close the Mail, i am asked:
,- [ ]
| ---
| Browse messages of the Common Folder * Maileingang *
| -------
| OK to create reading confirmation to the message
|
| from Jens Franik <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
|
| with subject "Test confirm"?
| ---
| OK Abbrechen
| ---
`-

But you are right, there is no Message generated and of course there is
no Confirmation to be send...

This is not due to AVG, there is even no Message in the Outbox.

If i trigger the Confirmation manually by a Quick-Template, it is sent.

FWIW it works over here. When I request a receipt confirmation, it is
up to the recipient's server whether it is sent back to me. When I
request a read confirmation, it is up to the recipient's settings
whether I receive it. Non-OTFE, but that shouldn't make a difference.
I use these features for important mails.

You are right, it already on the BETA List. Might be fixed in the next

Ah! Darn Common Folders!

Do me a favour, please. Right click on your * Maileingang * Common
Folder and select Properties->Templates->Confirmation.

Is the confirmation template set to %BLANK?

If so,
  - either select 'Override Account's Confirmation Settings' and include
  a non %BLANK template.
  - or, while your Common folder is selected, go to Account ->
Properties -> Templates -> Reading Confirmation and include a non
  %BLANK template there.

Now see if it works, or not.

This is a Virtual Common Folder, which represents a Summary of all my

Do you have other than the Default Templates for Reading Confirmation -

Ok, so you use the AVG Plugin for The Bat! - thats different, i use the

Such a 'cumbersome' template just for a reading confirmation? Instead of
'mixing apples and oranges', why don't you test with a simple one line

I confirm to generate the Reading-Confirmation.
It is beeing generated and put in the Outbox.
It is not sent, when i do several ALT-F2 to Send/Receive All

Only when i go on Outbox and say "Send queued Mail" it is sent.

My Options say "send all imediately" "send reading confirmation
imediately" and "prompt before action".

It does not work, it does not work - at least for me.

These receipt/read confirmations make sense in business, if an agent
or supplier is not answering their mails. I request the confirmations
in the reminder. Once I get the reply from their server or client, I
know that the message was at least received and he has no excuse if he
didn't actually read it. If I get no confirmation back, I call or fax
and ask whether my mail is stuck in their spam folder.

I've never used receipt/read confirmations so I'm un-familiar with
their operation. However, I've always assumed that they required some
action on the part of the recipient. But your reply seems to indicate
that there's some receipt (but not read) confirmation which is carried
out automatically by the server or the mail client itself, invisible
to the recipient. Am I misinterpreting what you wrote?

No, you got it right. These are two different confirmations:

1. The receipt confirmation requests the server to confirm receipt of
the message. This can be turned on or off by the sysad and is out of
control of the recipient.

2. The read confirmation is sent by the recipient's email client, and
the recipient can set his email client to send, not send, or request
action by the recipient.

Hi Thomas,

If I use this option in what way will I see this confirmation of
receiving the message?

Most Servers - in the Meantime - do not or no longer provide this
Feature.

I always request both Confirmations, but i rarely get a Reading
Confirmation - nearly no time i get the Delivery Confirmation.

You will receive an email from the server. The text of the email is up
to the sysad, but the server software also offers a default text.

Example:

This was for a message I sent to our sysad's hotmail address with a cc
copy to his company address. The receipt confirmation came from the
company's server, using his email address @example.co.th as sender.
Hotmail's server did not acknowlege receipt.

Use with care. It is annoying if I get a pop-up for each message from

Well, I was thinking in terms of a receipt confirmation rather than a
read confirmation. Yesterday I was able to configure TB! to request a
receive confirmation and in fact did get one from a message I had
sent. The confirmation text was as follows:

Your message was successfully delivered to its final destination.
This is a notification of that fact, as you requested.

  Please reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
if you feel this message to be in error.

I should point out for the benefit of others on this list that
although I sent more than one email yesterday, I received a receipt
confirmation from only one recipient's server. Coincidentally(?) he
and I use the same server.

My interest in this is mostly a curiosity of TB!'s myriad abilities as
I no longer have a need for confirmations of any sort.

All Settings are switched to "send immediately" and "prompt before
action" to send a Reading Confirmation.

It actually happens (at me) that the Confirmations are not sent, they
are queued in the Out box and can only be send manually (not by ALT-F2).

It looks like, the Reading Confirmations are not generated (at the first
sight).

Thats the Problem which i have and some others, but not all.

In my Case, i still use Windows 2000 Sp4, which causes more and more
Problems with other (Beta) Applications. But The Bat! claims to support
Windows 2000.

How about using "e" as signal string located in "Kludges"?

Should do it, since it is virtually impossible "e" not occuring in the
headers!

Use "." as the string and check "regular expressions". "." is the wildcard
in regex. Why you would want to send a reading confirmation though is a
mystery to me. All spam senders will immediately know that the address they
sent mai to os active. Everybody else could get pissed because they usually
assume that the mail they send is read. Think about it this way: you send a
mail to someone just to say "Okay" and you'll get a mail back saying "I
read it". If the other person has a filter installed just like you you'd
end up sending each other "I read it"-mails back and forth. Interesting ;)

Hello Roman,

An archeological dig discovered that on Thursday, September 20, 2001

Or use "@" in Sender. If there isn't an e-mail address any of the
fields searched by "Sender", then you can't reply anyway.

That's why you should change the subject in your reading confirmation.
Then you can make the filter more precise by ignoring messages with
that subject. If you have the luxury of having many addresses, you
can use one of them as the reply-to for all reading confirmations.
Any mail to that address would *not* get a confirmation.
