Scheduler

2004-06-03 Thread Graham Dodd
Hello all Bat users,

first time on the list so please excuse the newbie questions.

Coming from Outlook where I relied on the Calendar a lot I am finding that the
Scheduler is "not as good" in fact I'm using Firefox with the Calendar add-in for
scheduling and reminders.

Problem 1: If I select a date in the future then Insert a new task it always defaults
to the current date, not the selected date.
Is there a setting somewhere that can change this ?

Problem 2: Tasks that have been completed still remain in the list

Is there a way to get a view of the current month ?

I'm using The Bat 2.11 on a Win2000 system

Appreciate any help with these problems as I'm still trying to find my way around all
the menu's and cool features

2005-02-15 Thread WilWilWil
Io,

Is there anymore development on the scheduler of TB ? I think it's a great idea
to propose such tool, but a graphic environment will be more powerful than
simple list of task in text. I dream in a graphic management like in Outlook or
Palm Desktop...

Someone knows if Ritlabs work on that ?

If note, can you propose a free tool like this ?

More efficient, is there a way to synchronize my PDA Palm Tungsten with TB 3 ?

Thanks.

I don't think so.

The interface is only young.

It only remains to speculate where it might branch off. Is it best to
duplicate the same functionality in current scheduling/calendaring
applications many people use, like Outlook?

Or should it advance features in some other peculiar way?

GD> Problem 2: Tasks that have been completed still remain in the list

Well, aren't you the busy little scheduler? :-)

Maybe because they aren't sure if they are tasks, or events?

And if tasks, there's no way to say that one is completed.

GD> Is there a way to get a view of the current month ?

You mean like, a wide screen calendar display? I don't think so. I
think Outlook has the displaying calendars domain pretty well covered.

Try the Menu Navigator for this. It's just next to the Close And
Restore buttons, at the far top right corner.

Sometimes. Personally, I find Outlook's PIM capabilities far better
and easier to use than The Bat!'s when it comes to the calendar, the
task list, integration with other programs, mobile devices, and
network use.

However, with WinFS (in theory), personal information will become an
integral part of the OS. All personal information will be shared among
all PIM applications. Your Outlook address book will have all the same
people in it as your The Bat! address book does. But each application
will still be able to have its own data associated with the person
(templates, for example).

Scheduler question

2005-06-29 Thread Jeanny House
I'm trying to get the Scheduler to create/send an email. I'd like to
send the same email once a month. I want to address it to my
secretary and BCC a group of people from my address book.

I've tried it a couple of ways.

I put her address and the group in the "specific address" box and
checked "send secondary addresses as BCC." When the test email was
generated and saved in my outbox as a draft, only her address showed
up. No BCC group was generated, even when I hit F9 and looked at the
detailed headers.

I used the Linking function to link to her address in the TO: and the
group in the BCC. When I did that, I couldn't even get the test email
to generate on schedule.

I tried putting a macro command in the text to BCC to the group, but
that didn't work either.

Is there a way to do this that I'm overlooking?

Scheduler problems

2003-09-13 Thread Jack Morrison
Whenever I assign a sound file (.wav) to be played to alert me to a

No sound whatsoever. No matter how I configure Notification

Additionally, I can't get programs (*any* program) to run when I
assign the event to the Action, etc.

Any ideas about why I'm only getting the Reminder window, and nothing
else?

I'm running vs 2.00.6

Try this: put YOUR address in the BCC and send it out, even you dont
see your address there. Test it this way. If you get it, it works. BCC
does not show up in the header.

Scheduler stops working

2005-12-17 Thread Luca

I need my scheduler to send mail with a 5 minutes interval, but it stops
working after half an hour or so.

I see that this is a known bug, but in my case it seems more serious with
respect to its description here:

I tried many ways: date limits, number of repetitions ... it always stops
working whenever it likes.

Is there any workaround for this?

I use Allie Martin's batch file for my backups of The Bat! instead of
TB!'s built-in backup. It saves the complete TB! directory plus registry
key to a .rar archive, and on updating only edits what has changed.
There should be a copy in Marck's TBUDL pages as linked to below. If you
prefer, I can send it to you via PM.

This .bat file can be evoked by the scheduler under actions -- run program.

I'd like to add that I wouldn't recommend doing this on Win98. I tried
it twice, and the scheduler correctly informed me 1 minute before, and a
minute later Windows froze completely, leaving only the reset button...

I won't try it a third time. I prefer doing my backups manually

Keyboard navigation & scheduler

2003-10-22 Thread Peter Fjelsten
TheBat-users,

Since version 2, I think keyboard navigation has suffered. That or I
don't know how to make it behave as it did pre-2.

For example, in previous versions I had TB set up to move to next
unread message when i hit ( ' ), but now I cannot get this to
work when focus is in the preview pane (where I read all my
mail). Does anyone know why this is?

Same with navigating between the 3 panes. Before this could be
done with TAB or SHIFT+TAB. Now, it does not always work.
(Disclaimer: I have just tried it in 2.01.3 and here it seems to
   work).

I would like to be able to set the scheduler to run backups. Am I right
when I say this cannot be done at the moment? Also, it would be nice to
be able to run backup minimised (while working with TB). This isn't
 possible either, right?

I have set up a recurring event in the latest beta version 3.0.0.19,
repeats every hour, reminder 5 minutes before the event time. After the
second notification I quitted & restarted the program and have just
received the third notification. So I'd say it works in the latest beta
version.

I have not read the history of fixes since v3 release to verify if it was
broken and has been fixed since the v3 release version of Sept 1st (the
beta.19 is from Sept 27th).

I don't know of a release date, but given the large number of fixes that
have been made since the v3 release I'd dare say that an updated release
version is only days ahead, but don't nail me down on that. :-)

For a series of reasons I'd prefer not to involve my POP server for the same
account, my set of filters would get too complicated. I could set a bogus pop
server to do the same operation without actually downloading email with the
same account, but I should also disable the Windows sound that would bother me
at each error, every five minutes :-)

Would it be possibile to use the Windows scheduler to launch a .bat file every
five minutes with a /send"account" command for The Bat?

Hope this bug will be fixed soon. There's no point in having a scheduler and
not being able to use it.

That would be an option too. Just keep in mind that this stops working

Why use a bogus one that causes an error rather than a real one

Well, it's a pretty unusual situation: I co-moderate a Yahoogroups mailing
list and I'd like to use TB to automate some approve/reject operation. I'm the
one to set the whole mechanism - moderation account properties in TB, filters,
etc - both for me and the other moderator. My colleague would run TB from
behind a firewall which prevents him to use any pop/smtp server except his
own, and he is allowed to use only one mailbox for all his email.

So, I formerly wrote "my pop server" only as a semplification here. Actually,
it's my collegue's one that I'd rather not involve for mail checking in his
"moderation" account, the one used to send back control messages to
Yahoogroups. Incoming messages of any kind are processed by his "normal"
account, where moderation filters for the mailing list operate. Then,
generated control messages are queued in the Outbox of the "moderation"
account, waiting for TB's scheduler to do its job and send them. If it worked.

Of course I could redesign the whole machine to adapt it to this no-scheduler
situation for him, but it would be uneasy, and inelegant. And sad.

Scheduler - programs won't start?

2003-09-06 Thread Jan-Arild Løkstad
Hello all,

I've been playing with V2 for a couple of days on my test machine
(running Win98 4.10.1998), but can't for the life of me figure out how
to use the scheduler to start a program. I've followed instructions in
the help file to the letter, but programs just won't start; nothing
happens. Other tasks (i.e send/check mail) are performed without any
problems.

Maybe it is a Win98 issue? Haven't tried V2 on WinXP (yet)

Any suggestions?

Here's what I don't get, Peter. A "bug," at least to my way of
thinking, is essentially a *quirk* in a program.

For example, if someone is doing something (or has something on his
computer) that the programmer couldn't possibly have allowed/planned
for, the program might not work exactly as advertised, or it might not
work at all under those specific conditions, etc.

But Scheduler doesn't do just about *everything* that it's *supposed*
to do, so how can that just be a "bug"? It's like Scheduler was just
an rough draft add-on that isn't/wasn't ready for prime time yet. And
why there are no "work-arounds" for it, either.

So why even include it at all? I just don't get it.

Look, I love TB!, don't get me wrong. And I will wait patiently for
Rit-Labs to get Scheduler to work as advertised. But the thing I've
always loved most about it is, with the lone exception of Agent, it
has always been my most BOMB PROOF program, *very* stable, etc. I
never had to worry about stuff not working as advertised.

I can't say that anymore.

First, create a "new pad" in SmartBat. For example, a new pad named
"Clips."

Now try to delete it. Good luck with that!

It will remain in the SmartBat's tabular index no matter what you do.
You can even fire a cruise missile at it, totally destroying it via
Microsoft Explorer, but it will *still* be included in the tabular index.

Like kudzu, you just can't kill it.

On my 2.01.3 I have no trouble with this -- it navigates among panes as

take you through the links before moving on to the folder pane.

Quite certain this is not possible, yet -- but, yes, it would be a nice

AFAIK, no, it's not possible -- but, do you mean mean have the Backup
happening in the background while still allowing you to work with TB? If
so, that would be a very difficult thing as it's hard to back something
up while data is still being manipulated within it . . .

Scheduler - reasons to go V2

2003-09-05 Thread Günter Minnerup
I'm still looking for good reasons to upgrade. I don't use IMAP (ISP
doesn't support it), have no need for PGP, and have never been
bothered by any serious bugs in the version I use.
The scheduler might be an incentive, but although there are a lot of
mentions of it I'm not sure what it does. I'm on a broadband
connection and poll for new mail every five minutes anyway. So why do
I need the scheduler?
Another good reason would be the new editor, or the ability to use an
editor of my choice. So what does V2 offer in that department?
Any other compelling reasons for someone like me to upgrade? Other
than the prospect of future improvements and the fact that if I don't
within two months it will be more expensive?

I'd assume there were changes, as they released 2.00.1 (2.00.6 in the

number. However somebody had pasted the changes since the 2.00 release
to the list earlier. Apparently the changes are still shipped in the

If you use "Close pad" instead, then it goes - no missile needed. Not
the way it should work I know, but it does ;-)

Confirmed. When you report it to backtrack, please advise the Bug ID
number for those of us who want to keep an eye on it.

> You can even fire a cruise missile at it, totally destroying it via

I didn't try the cruise missile thing, so that part is not
confirmed... By MS Explorer, I guess you mean windows Explorer and not
Internet Explorer, and I used total Commander instead and deleted the
file while TB closed. Upon restart of TB, the tab is still there in
SmartBat, but of course the text is gone. But it is not empty:

I had two entries in the Main Tab. When I open SmartBat, the new tab
is opened automatically, and I see the older of the two entries from
the maintab in the new tab. When I go to the main tab, that entry is
missing. Back to the new tab, it is gone there too. Closing SmartBat
and reopening it shows the entry back in the new tab and missing from
the main tab, but gone again when going back to the new tab. No text
file for the new tab on the HD. Anybody can confirm this?

So, I type something into the new tab. A text file gets created on the
HD. Close SmartBat, reopen, the old entry from the main tab is there
again, plus the newly-type text. Main tab is still missing that entry.
Back to new tab shows only the newly-typed text. Text file on HD
contains only the newly-typed text. Is anybody seeing the same?

But the text file stays on the HD.

I have noticed that the missing part from the main pad is back now
that I have used "Close Pad". So that one is simply a display bug.

Yes, it will delete the file manually, using Windows functions that
way. Or any other way. The point is, TB should delete the file
automatically.

If so, then optional please. If no option, then leave as is. I've been
using it as a means to edit certain text files quickly. If I wish to no
longer do so, I wish to remove the pad and not delete the actual file at
the same time. An automatic deletion would assume that the only reason
one would have need for the linked text file would be in the context of
SmartBat use.

Ohm that's a way of using SmartBat I never thought about - a
replacement text editor.

Well, we have different needs here, so I agree that whether or not the
file should be deleted when the pad is deleted thought be optional.
Setting in SmartBat itself:

1.) Delete text file when pad is deleted
2.) Keep text file when pad is deleted
3.) Ask every time

The latter is because I might use it the way you indicate, but not
always, so... ;-)

It's a great way to keep a cookie file growing.

I also use it to edit my mass mailing template.

I save occasional clips of text that I wish to keep.

In fact, in all my uses, I don't wish to delete the linked text document
if I wish to delete the pad in SmartBat!

My only grouse here is that SmartBat! doesn't seem to offer a means of
you knowing where the linked text file is and its name.

Right. I just tried it. It is much more convenient than firing up vim

I see no reason to delete the tab.

The name of the file is identical with the name of the tab. Default
location is "...\The Bat!\Mail", but if you navigate and open a file
in another directory, I cannot find a way to make that directory
visible, either.

Where is the 'Delete pad' command. I can only find a 'Close pad' under the

The Close pad I find useful as you can then reopen Pads to edit them

That's probably why the "delete" command doesn't work on the pad

Synchronise is British English. Synchronize is the American
spelling, now also adopted in British English as an alternative
spelling. TB, being an effectively European product uses standard
British English spellings throughout.

only. Not the case.

I'm running Win98SE, TB! v2.0, only pop accounts, 512 MB Ram. I have
not tried the scheduler in any of the beta versions before. Any ideas
on how to make it work (apart from calling it a bug and waiting for
help from Stefan and his team)?

I don't think need is the right word there. But having the scheduler a
part of TB finally allowed me to remove Outlook 2002 from my system.
The only reason it was still there was because I still used its
Calendar, To-Do, etc. functions. The TB's scheduler doesn't have as
many features at Outlook, and it's not as sophisticated, etc., but it
more than meets my requirements. And SmartBat is a nice feature, too,
and I'm sure I'll come up with a lot of uses for it. Right now
though, I just use it as a very convenient scratch pad.

Of course, I'm also anxious to see what MS's new OneNote program will
have to offer, but it won't be out until late October, at the
earliest. But it sounds very, very interesting.

PS: I would have paid the $17.50 upgrade price just for the new, fresh
look of v2.0, but then I'm weird like that. :)

I think the release of 2.0 was quite premature. The upgrade policies seem to
differ, depending on who you contact. The documentation of the new features,
if they work, is mostly incomplete and/or nonexistent. Perhaps they should
have waited until things were together instead of rushing to meet schedules
and leaving features and documentation incomplete.

The documentation for 1.6 is similarly very poor, so I don't think
schedules are an excuse for that aspect of TB's shortcomings.

How about this one? It's not exactly concise but it's pretty

We didn't start using The Bat! until the first week of July '03. We moved
from Poco because, after 2+ years of using it, the unfixed bugs and poor
documentation were driving me nuts. Everybody raved about The Bat!'s power,
so I decide to switch. I'm beginning to feel that the standard 30-day trial
period just isn't enough, and that maybe users should push for 60 to 90 days.

Sigh!!! Maybe I'll retry Becky. I handle software switches quite easily, but
my wife will go nuts learning another interface after she just got comfortable
with this. She got quite upset with the icon switch in 2.0, so I had to
install the old icons. Another sigh!!!

It's actually more than just bugfixes - but is, as you say, there
after installation - so making it available to anyone interested may
serve a purpose. ;-)

The website does mention the Scheduler - from the page I posted the

Or you can use a third party application, such as WinAce, or maybe
WinRAR to open the install program to get to it, or just install the
demo. However I do agree, it should certainly be easier to get to

I sympathise. I too am a refugee from another program, and haven't even
been using TB as long as you. Powerful it may be, but what's the use
if a substantial part of that power is undocumented. It's pretty
shabby, IMO. Without the kind help of this list, I would probably have
given up on TB by now.

I have trouble with the view that a Help file is some sort of optional

poor programming, IMO.

If you have your own domain, you can accurately tell, based on the
In-Reply-To header which messages are direct replies to yours.

I use a filter in TB! that filters on incoming in-reply-to headers to
see if the message id contains my domain landscreek.net. If so, a sound
is triggered and the message is colour coded. The string match is a
regular expression, so you have to enable regular expressions in the
filter rule options. An example expression is:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] location:Kludges Presence: yes

In this way I can easily see which messages are replies to mine and if
I'm at or near the machine, I get an audible indicator that a reply to
one of my messages has arrived.

You can do this with other message types so that you prioritize
messages, and read the more important ones first.
