Re: [Texascavers] Lost!

2019-02-26 Thread bmorgan994
Diana:

The fact that we are all human beings, and that there are no “pure” groups
within our species, does not mean that we are all alike, or that different
groups do not have different propensities associated with varying gene
frequencies.

Evolution is ongoing and is influenced by cultural as well as environmental
factors. I think that it is reasonable to suppose that a relatively homogenous
hierarchically arranged agricultural civilization such as the Han Chinese would
value conformity and attachment to place; whereas, those groups that live in
marginal habitats and have to hunt hard for every bite of food would value
personal physical bravery and the ability to explore far away places in search
of sustenance. In an ancient civilized society one might hope that one’s
offspring would marry up the social ladder, but in a savage society such as
ours it is best to screw the biggest meanest most far ranging hunter. Such
choices have evolutionary consequences.

I do not know to what extent the ability to find one’s way around is
genetically based, but I do know that the worldwide caving community is
overwhelmingly white despite the admixture of just enough diversity so that
leftist intellectuals can trot out the straw man of genetic “impurity” to prove
that we are all one big happy family.

FWIW, a better source about the historical migration of human populations,

[Texascavers] Lost!

2019-02-26 Thread bmorgan994
A very interesting article pertaining to the art of getting lost recently
appeared in the Atlantic:

https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2019/02/getting-lost-cave-labyri
nth-brain/582865/

I call it an art because for all of my life I have been cursed by an
inability to get lost. There have been few instances when I have been
gripped by "Where the Hell am I?" anxiety, so I often go to great lengths to
wander aimlessly in places I am unfamiliar with.

According to the article I must have a very well developed hippocampus
because everywhere I go I make it a point to notice where I am and thus
develop a mental "map" of where I am. It is certainly not infallible, for I
often get disoriented in buildings, and invariably get lost when I am
following someone else. It is extremely easy to get lost in caves because
there are few external clues; nevertheless, I have had few anxious moments
simply because I pay attention. Some imagine that certain people have an
innate sense of direction, but I have never met anyone who could point in
the cardinal directions after spinning around half a dozen time in a cave
with the lights turned off.

The ability to make a mental map is the exact opposite of the method
preferred by people who are always lost. It is a sad fact that most modern
people are lost most of the time. Just ask for directions and you will soon
learn that the average person can only navigate using "waypoints", such as
"turn left at the Dairy Queen, then right at the bank". They can picture the
buildings, but have no idea where the buildings are in the larger scheme of
things, if coming from a different direction they are doomed! I have often
met people, even country people, who have no idea where the sun comes up or
where it goes down. My grandmother was such an idiot that she could not
circumnavigate the suburban block where she lived, even going to the end of
the street was disorienting so she just stayed home (thank goodness!).

I don't think that those few navigational abilities I possess are inherent.
Maybe I do have a well developed hippocampus, but if so it is mostly because
I so often exercise the neurons in question. The underlying cause is
insatiable curiosity. If there is someplace I haven't been then I've just
gotta go there!

So where does that insatiable curiosity come from? I am convinced that it is
a hunting instinct, which is effectively the same as an exploration
instinct. I have often observed that throughout the world only a small
percentage of people in any given culture are compulsive hunters or
explorers, and that this has nothing to do with circumstance, or whether or
not the people in question are actual hunters. Thus we find great world
explorers who live in New York City, and hopelessly inept hunters who live
in the jungle and would never make it home alive if they couldn't remember
to "turn left at the waterfall, then right at the big rock".

Allow me to contradict myself. When viewed at the scale of entire
populations there do seem to be inherent differences in regard to spatial
abilities.

Though I have not been to Africa, I have often observed with dismay the
curious lack of curiosity and navigational ability on the part of black
people both here in the United States and elsewhere in the "new" world. Such
people were generally derived from sedentary agriculturalist Bantu tribes in
west Africa. Nomadic Nilotic pastoralists are obviously good at finding
their way around but were rarely enslaved. Pygmies live only in the deep
jungle and are hunter gatherers with legendary navigational abilities.
Africa is the most genetically diverse place on the planet, so I cannot help
but think that there are inherent differences in the abilities of these
various groups.

The Chinese and many others in southeast Asia are agriculturalists who have
historically shown little interest in exploration. It certainly isn't due to
a lack of intelligence, and the same cannot be said of their close relatives
the Mongols who famously raped and pillaged their way across the continent,
so perhaps it is a purely cultural phenomenon. Nevertheless, on my trips to
China I was astounded by the lack of situational awareness shown even by the
most backwoods peasants who had no idea of what was on the other side of the
hill that they had lived next to all of their lives. The same was not true
of the hill tribes who had ben pushed into marginal habitats and were very
good woodsmen.

As for the Polynesians, who were derived from the Chinese and were the
world's greatest explorers, I am simply baffled!

That brings us to the hulking hairy Pleistocene Honkeys who were our
forefathers. They ranged the depth and breadth of the world's largest
continent during the ice ages hunting dangerous animals and fighting each
other. Their insatiable curiosity carried them to every corner of the earth,
and even into caves!

Now where was I?

Sleazel

I accidentally left my mindset, memory channels, frame of mind,
inner-thoughts, marbles, etc., in the cold water of the Medina River.

If found,. leave them there, and I will pick up next October.

If I don't return to pick them up, please put under an algae covered rock.

[Texascavers] Lost TCMA Members

2013-11-01 Thread R D Milhollin
Texas Cavers,

The Texas Cave Management Association has lost contact with a few members, or
possibly a few members have lost contact with the TCMA. In any event we are
looking for them, and maybe YOU can help.

The annual election for TCMA directors is coming up and we want to be sure that
every current member is able to vote for the candidate they feel will be most
able to help TCMA move forward acquiring even more caves for cavers. The
following list of cavers do not have current contact info on file with the
TCMA… if you know where they are hiding can you let us know?

Doug Allen
Jacqueline J. Belwood
Carolyn Biegert
Phil Curtain
John Kebler
Kevin Koch
Gary Olsaver
Rachel Saker

Please send any helpful responses off-list to the TCMA database manager, Ron
Ralph ronra...@austin.rr.com

An e-mail address would be best, since the ballots for the upcoming election
will be sent via e-mail, and we can use that method to get updates on mailing
addresses, etc.

If any readers of this message are not current members they can go online to

[Texascavers] Lost Oasis cricket count

2012-02-06 Thread Jim Kennedy
Cavers,

The TCMA will be performing a cricket emergence count at the Lost Oasis
Cave Preserve in south Austin on Wednesday 29 February. This is an
excellent opportunity for a couple of interested volunteers to come out
with us and learn what is involved with this biological monitoring
technique. The Preserve Manager really only needs two people to
participate in the training. First responses to Ron Ralph at
ronra...@austin.rr.com get on the list. Others are welcome to just show
up and observe if they wish. Ron will send the address and a map to
participants who need such. Todd Bayless, the Natural Resources
Specialist for Travis County (their karst guy) will be doing the
training. There may also be a discussion on red imported fire ant
surveys and treatments. Meeting time at the preserve is 5:30 pm. For
more details, contact Ron.

Cavers,

I would like to thank the 11 volunteers who came out yesterday to help clear
brush and pick-up trash at the Texas Cave Management Association Lost Oasis
cave preserve in South Austin. Your efforts removed a great deal of the
thick brush, briers and small trees inside the chain link compound. You also
mostly completed the 25-foot firebreak on the south side against the
neighbor's wooden fence. A special thanks to Galen, Jim, Vico and Gill whose
chain saws shredded much of the vegetation. The crew also mowed the grass
flanking the front sidewalk and removed a lot of the encroaching vegetation
overgrowing the sidewalk. And two body bag sized trash containers were
filled with paper, plastic and other gifts of the neighboring community.

We will do this again in the spring to finish clearing the compound and
selectively clearing and removing lower branches on surrounding trees, so
stand by for another call for volunteers. And I hope those who went caving
enjoyed the TCMA preserve.

RE: [Texascavers] Lost Oasis work day --- CHANGE OF DATE

2011-02-22 Thread Mark . Alman
Wow!

Busy weekend.

Don't forget that the 100th project weekend for the GCSNA is that
weekend, as well:

The 100th trip of the Government Canyon Karst Project will take place on
the 5th and 6th of March. We will meet as usual at 9:00 on both days in
the parking area of the Volunteer/Research Station to organize teams and
objectives. On the evening of the 5th (Saturday) we will have a hog
roast, awards ceremony, and presentation in celebration of the 100th
project trip. The event will take place at the Volunteer/Research
Station. All are invited to come. The hog will be provided courtesy of
the Government Canyon Hog Hunters (feral hog eradication). A vegetarian
entre will also be provided. Please bring a side dish and your own
drinks. The meal will begin at 5:30.

Many participants will be camping at the volunteer campground nearby so
bring your tent and join in the fun. Then go caving, digging, or
ridgewalking on Sunday.

Directions to the Government Canyon Karst Project:

Find the intersection of U.S. 16 and Loop 1604 in northwest Bexar County
(clearly shown on any state highway map). Drive 2 miles north on U.S. 16
to the third traffic light and turn left onto FM 1560 (there is a Shell
station on the corner). Follow 1560 for 3 miles till you see the sign
for GCSNA. Follow the arrow to the right and drive 2 more miles to the
sharp left turn in the road. The gate to GCSNA is straight ahead. Enter
at the gate and then take the first right. There is an unlocked gate
that will need to be opened and then closed behind you. Continue to the
Volunteer/Research Station, where we will meet.

Marvin Miller

(210) 415-5190

Finish up in time and you can probably make the hog feed, as well!

Thanks,

Mark

[Texascavers] lost item at loud camp

2009-07-28 Thread David
I believe that my mattress pad mysteriously disappeared from one of my tents
around Friday.

There is a remote chance that I sold it, but I find that hard to believe.

It was a large size and self-inflating and black.

The person sleeping in the tent said that it was not there Friday
night when they
went to bed.

Hopefully, I just misplaced it. But it was expensive, so I am a
little concerned
that some fowl play might have been involved.

I loaned someone a yellow fiberglass hammer, but I am not sure if I got it back.

I found an orange plastic cup with a neon orange piece of tape around
it. I also
found 2 telescoping tarp poles at the pavilion. And in the
library, I found a green
duffel bag that I presume was used to carry artwork.

I also have one of the award winning maps from the cartography salon.
  Identify
it and it is yours. ( These items are in storage in Kerrville, so you will
probably never get them back ).

I think we need a scapegoat. That would be the individual who crashed the
event without registering and bragged about it. Passed out drunk in the hot
tub area, he threw beer on Michelle and Ellie when they tried to help him.
He stole Ara's (Lady from New Mexico) badge and wouldn't be surprising if
that's also what happened to other assorted items.

Well,
I would have to assume so. I say this because if you have a sign posted or a
purple mark on a post or tree every 100ft it makes it criminal trespassing.

http://tlo2.tlc.state.tx.us/statutes/docs/PE/content/htm/pe.007.00.30.00.htm#30.05.00
 that's the criminal trespassing code.
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa5420/is_/ai_n29493801 this link talks
about landowner liability and says for the most part that if someone is
trespassing that they have little liability if they don't boobietrap their
property.

Re: [Texascavers] Lost in Airman's

2008-03-12 Thread timst...@excite.com

n general people do not actually need a rescue in Airman's. What they need is
to get motivated to move themselves out of the cave. Years ago some college
aged girl got back in there and stopped crawling, citing exhaustion. Did she
expect someone would come lather her up with suds and slider her out? When push
came to shove, she got a going under her own power and exited the cave. I think
that was the illustrious fire department callout with the drills and everything.

Time and time again, it is shown that people get themselves out of Airman's
without any real assistance. They may come out later than planned, but that is
the nature of any true wilderness experience. Who has come back from a long
hike, lost for hours without the Man getting the rescue call? Happens all of
the time. But if it is in a cave, there seems to be some dread to being late.

Tell the Press not to worry. The cave is finite. Everyone in the past has
returned from it. Most were simply tired.

[Texascavers] Lost in a cave

2008-03-11 Thread speleosteele
Last night I sat down to do some paperwork, turned on the TV, and caught the
end of this program about a guy lost in a cave and surviving.

This is from TagNet this morning:

The Human Body: Pushing the Limits
By: Brian Houha (Fort Lauderdale, Florida)

The Discovery Channel has a great series called The Human Body: Pushing
the Limits. Sunday night they presented an episode called Brainpower --
How the human brain reacts under extreme stress or danger. They featured
a French caver named Jean-Luc Josuat who survived 35 days alone in a
cave and lost 40 lbs as his body digested itself. They show him
rappelling into an entrance and falling halfway.

If you don't have access to cable, I pulled his story off the BBC.

Man found after weeks in cave

By Hugh Schofield

Paris

A man who went missing five weeks ago in south-western France has been
found alive in an underground cave system where he had got lost. Jean-
Luc Josuat-Verges, 48, told police he survived by eating wood and clay.

He was found thanks to some teenagers who had been exploring the caves,
which are normally closed to the public.

Mr Josuat-Verges left his home on 18 December suffering from
depression and telling his wife he wanted to be alone for a time,
local newspapers said.

Taking a bottle of whisky he drove his jeep to an abandoned mushroom
farm consisting of a vast network of underground tunnels.

But in the pitch blackness he got lost and for the next 35 days he had
to survive as he could.

Wrapped in plastic sheeting, he said he ate wood and clay, which may
have been the remains of the mushrooms.

On Thursday the teenagers, taking advantage of a teachers' strike, went
to explore the underground galleries which are supposed to be out of
bounds to the public.

Seeing the man's jeep, they alerted the police who eventually found him
on Friday.

He was thin, very dishevelled, but alive. It was like seeing a mummy
rising from the dead, one officer told a newspaper.

[Texascavers] lost emails

2008-02-03 Thread J. LaRue Thomas

Hello, all,
My spam filter took it upon itself to call many messages spam and to
disappear them without allowing me a choice.

I am very good at answering emails; if some one of you emailed me and
received no response, please try again. My spam filter has been suitably
chastised and is now functioning properly. Jacqui Thomas

[Texascavers] Lost again? from Spring Convention

2007-05-06 Thread J. LaRue Bills
After Spring Convention we had left over a homemade looking charger for an
electronic device. Someone took it home to safeguard it while we searched
for the owner.

Bev Shade, the owner, is now looking for it and we cannot find the
guardian. If you have the device, please contact me and/or Bev. Thanks,
Jacqui

[Texascavers] lost at convetion

2007-04-17 Thread Bill Mixon
The transformer (presumably a battery charger of some sort), bundled with a
video cable, was actually in the beer pocket in the arm of one of my chairs
on Sunday morning. When I fold up the chair to steal away, someone moved the
thing over the registration area, hoping it would be found there. -- Mixon
