And my lesions were in the brainstem.

Which means that either physical exertion or stressful situations or
attempts at verbal or written communication can overload the circuitry and send
me into convulsions that end up with me on the floor, stiff as a board and
unable to talk.

Talk about communication! Last summer was a real example. I was
visiting my 94-year-old mother, who is very frail, when I had an attack after
getting too excited that the Yankees had one a close game against the Red Sox.
There we were, me on the floor and my mother putting a pillow under my head.
What a pair we made. It was all very funny to both of us. Eventually, I was
able go get up and resume something like a normal posture.

I am at peace, since as an economics professor I can still work and
the TM only meant that I must be very careful and slow with things, but at
least I can walk, and take care of my needs. So, I thank God for what I have.

i was fortunate with the bowel/bladder problems. not like i dont have

i have sensations that are not normal ,it could have been different
in that the nerves could have really messed me up in that area.

i was fortunate with the bowel/bladder problems. not like i dont have areas
there that is not touched but it is controllable.

i have sensations that are not normal ,it could have been different in that the
nerves could have really messed me up in that area.

it is not unusual though when other things in the neurological arena cause the
same disfunctions

nerves are nerves so one could say that when things go wrong,

what we have here is a lack of communication

we have a body that is wonderfully made when it works right.

 Initially paraplegic, then improved
to walking with fore-arm crutches. Tail not involved.
Bladder a problem; sphincter will not release, so I've had a
Foley for years, changed about every two weeks.

Talk about communication! Last summer was a real example. I was visiting
my 94-year-old mother, who is very frail, when I had an attack after getting
too excited that the Yankees had one a close game against the Red Sox.
There we were, me on the floor and my mother putting a pillow under my head.
What a pair we made. It was all very funny to both of us. Eventually, I

No. Dr Kerr explicitly excludes a spinal stroke in his paper,
http://www.scribd.com/doc/2581845/Frontiers-in-Bioscience-review-article
and, when he examined me and my records in 1998 or 1999, diagnosed my spinal
stroke. The key was the clear CSF.

Later, by relating my symptoms to the tracts in the cord I could understand the
details of the damage.

Hi all,
I'm a little behind in my reading, but as I was reading this message
from Alton, I wanted to report that I had my appointment with my new
neuro this past week. And he thinks that it is very probable that I
also had a spinal cord infarct. But it is now 3 years after the fact.

If you don't remember my most recent messages, my former neuro wanted to
start me on MS shots 2 months ago. My brain MRI, C-spine and Thoracic
spine were unchanged from 3 years ago which was not positive for MS.
Actually, my thoracic was changed, it showed the old injury and it not
being active. My vision evoked response test or VER was also negative
for MS. My new doctor is leaving some leeway, but says probably 80%
sure that it is not MS.

Those of you who were originally diagnosed with TM, were any of your
diagnosis changed to MS around the age of 55-58 or older?

Strictly speaking, neither of us have TM. Myelitis is an
inflammation of the myelin; I don't believe any infection can have such
a sudden onset. Moreover, my spinal fluid was clear of white blood
cells that would have been marshaled to fight an inflammation. I,
perhaps we, had an infarction of a branch artery within the cord.

2008-06-08 Thread Akua

My butt went numb on 9/11/05
i went to a chiropractor for 4 weeks
with backache. When i began to be constipated
i sought a doctor Week 4
i saw a nurse practitioner who wanted me
to have an MRI. I couldn't get in for months
as i was traveling to another city for work,
she said if there was any change to go to
an emergency room. about
10/6 i went to work then drove myself to Strong's emergency room
having awakened with wobbly legs.
I was seen quickly, admitted that night, had
an MRI and other tests. Given steroids, told I had TMSpent a long weekend
moving from walker to quad cane to cane.
Walked out, drove home, walked with much
pain which got better but on Monday11/14/05
at 3:04 am I lost the ability to walk as I walked
back to my bedroom after going to the bathroom.in retrospect the
awful timing was

a lifesaver... in a few hours i would have been on the highway driving
back to Rochester...

Not long ago, someone wrote they remembered their butt going numb.
When they wrote it, it struck a cord with me. I was in sales and I
remember telling my co-worker that I needed a new chair or get out
and make some sales calls because my butt was going number. I wish
I could remember how long this was before my leg died. It had to be
either the same month or the month prior. But oh, well, what good
would it do if I did remember? LOL! It would just satisfy my
curiosity and I could long it into my journal.

2008-06-06 Thread Bob and Sue Mattis
I guess I should have clarified a little better. I had been
experiencing back pain for 3 or 4 days, but attributed it to working
from sun-up to sun-down at our town's festival. Apparently there was
more going on than I realized. From the point of excruciating pain in
lower back to paralysis was 10 minutes. What led up to the onset might
have been days in coming.

Strictly speaking, neither of us have TM. Myelitis is an inflammation of
the myelin; I don't believe any infection can have such a sudden onset.
Moreover, my spinal fluid was clear of white blood cells that would have
been marshaled to fight an inflammation. I, perhaps we, had an
infarction of a branch artery within the cord.

So young. I was 58. I was dx'd with definitive ATM and 'possible' MS. My
neuro said that statistically, the later in life you develop neurological
disease, the lower your chances of developing full blown MS. I was never sure
if he was trying to raise my morale or if he did have those statistics.
Whatever the reason, it helped a lot with the initial shock of having to live
life differently.
