external server can still run plugins for use with the Touch, but many
will have to be re-written. A crossfeed plugin that doesn't interact
with the user in anyway MIGHT be usable as is with a Touch using SBS on
 an external server.

I believe that Inguz on sbs can do this. It has a variable width
control.
Yes it would change both analogue and digital outputs.

Bit-perfect replay would be lost of course (no matter where the volume
control was set).
However, if I was using headphones as a primary listening tool and
listening to lots of tracks (rather than whole albums) I would
definitely be using ReplayGain (smartgain) anyway.

If have a headamp, but I find that with better head-amps as SQ

I also have a pair of Sennheiser headphones, they sound wonderful with
the Touch.

I've done some comparisons with a couple external amps and direct into
the Touch. Its a tough decision. A really good amp is better than the
one in the Touch, BUT you have a set of wires and connectors in between
which aren't there in the Touch. A really good headamp and really good
interconnects will sound slightly better but its close. With less than
great external equipment, just plug them in direct and enjoy.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox Touch Sound Quality with USB Drive

2010-04-11 Thread bingcrosby

Phil, I almost purchased a Stefan Audio Art cable a few years ago when
they were on special. However, I bought a hifi stand for $550 reduced
from $900 instead.

The reason why I haven't bought them since (the same reason I haven't
rewired my mission 782 speakers) is that I feel they will remove the
glow and warmth of the headphones. In short, they might be different
(perhaps better), but they aren't HD650s anymore. And they are the same
price as the Touch almost! And a significant fraction of the price of
the HD800s.

From a technical point of view, I've often been concerned about
impedance matching when rewiring. Reviews also suggested the presence
of microphony on the aftermarket cables, which is a pain.

Sure upgrades like cables might offer you a way of improving your
system without selling up and buying a whole new kit. But I think it
is better to make fewer and larger leaps, saving yourself money. My
Nordost cable costs the same as the HD800s all up, and I'd rather have
them and copper cable than just the Nordost. My view anyway, learning
the hard way.

That looks like part of the setup screen, which comes from the firmware,
not SBS. So the size button may not work at this particular point. What
size was the text set at before you got to this point? Is the text cut
off when you have the usual SBS menus (ie, not the setup menus)?
Offhand, the missing text here doesn't look good for your SB3, so it's
good for you to get it sorted out before you try to sell it.

For those of us feeding a Touch into a pre/amp this will save having to

The alarm from the built-in speakers could just be beeps if that is all

WD's own documentation is a little bit shoddy about it's specs ?
The WD passport is USB powered but in their papers you can read about
a special cable for the few computers that limits the power on the USB
ports ?
Even more bizarre the manual does not tell how many mA it want's ?

So in the case of this WD passport, if not better specs are available
only if somebody actually tried it can give us an answer.

Personally I would get a =1TB 3,5 drive with power supply or buy a
case with a psand then shop for a WD green drive =1TB in size.

I've only tried the analogue outputs, as I've understood there might be
a bigger difference on the digital outputs as long as you feed them into
a good DAC. I don't have an external DAC and the built-in one in my
Sherwood RVD-9090 receiver isn't good enough to justify using the Touch
with digital outputs.

I've not done a A/B blind test with the analogue outputs, I've just
compared the SB3 and Touch by switching the receiver inputs myself.

480x272

The default visualizer looks like this:
http://svn.slimdevices.com/repos/jive/7.5/trunk/squeezeplay/src/squeezeplay/share/applets/WQVGAsmallSkin/images/UNOFFICIAL/VUMeter/vu_analog_25seq_b.png

Or with white background:
http://svn.slimdevices.com/repos/jive/7.5/trunk/squeezeplay/src/squeezeplay/share/applets/WQVGAsmallSkin/images/UNOFFICIAL/VUMeter/vu_analog_25seq_w.png

Use png format on the images.

Make the images for each style as:
1. A background image 480x272
2. A arrow image at a clock position 12:00
3. A long image as those linked above where you have copied the arrow
into the background image in all possible positions

I'm not sure yet if the performance will be good enough for the applet
to actually rotate image 2 in run time on top of a static background
(image 1) or if we need to go with the solution of a single image 3 as
the standard visualizer use.

If you create the combined version (image 3) that can be use directly
by replacing the standard image with your own version without any
developing.

chose the proper drive if one wants to power it off the USB port. USB
certified drives are going to have a higher success rate then

The only limit I see is the size of the drive one uses with the Touch

then one should just opt for an external powered USB drive.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 2 USB drive questions for Touch

2010-04-11 Thread mlsstl

I let the USB drive run overnight and I don't think it ever did complete
a scan. However, it did play any music that I selected through the
folder directory (other than the iTunes material.)

I umounted the drive from the Touch and checked it on my linux PC and
it seems to be OK. I'm not sure what the story is about this. (A 2 GB
flash drive with a selection of music on it mounted in a couple of
minutes and seemed to behave as others indicated it should.)

I don't think I'm going to spend anymore time on this issue right now.
I'll just hang back and see what others experience over the next week
or two.

 Touch with digital outputs.

I've not done a A/B blind test with the analogue outputs, I've just
compared the SB3 and Touch by switching the receiver inputs myself.

I've used a SB3 with a Lavry DA10 DAC for the past couple of years as
my primary music source.

The Touch arrived Friday and I spent quite a bit of time the past
couple of days listening to the Touch. I level-matched the SB3/Lavry
output with the Touch and synced the two players. I was then able to
switch between the two inputs for back-to-back comparison.

The difference between the SB3 analog out and though the Lavry is quite
noticeable to me (though I don't consider the SB3 analog bad - just
rather pedestrian.)

In comparing the Touch analog out to the SB3/Lavry, the difference is
extremely subtle in my book. I have to strain to hear the difference. I
am very impressed and will probably end up selling my Lavry. In
audiophile-land, the Touch has no right to sound as good as it does for
the price. ;-)

However, I'm sure others will disagree with that thinking, but that's
fine by me. When I have to strain to hear the difference between two
pieces of equipment, that's a sign for me to let go of the issue and
just enjoy the music.

Have been using and loving this part of Herger's MusicInfoSCR plugin
for Classic and Transporter, but as far as I understand this plugin is
 not compatible with the Touch.

You could do it in dB of gain or amount of voltage gain but obviously
it wouldn't translate to dB of output because you would also need to
know the gain of the preamp/amplifier attached and the sensitivity of
the loudspeaker. Then of course you would need to know the
measurement distance so once you get to actual dB output the situation
becomes complex and dependent upon several system variables.

So...dB of gain is somewhat arbitrary as is the volume bar.

I would probably give the Lavry first place based on my long

Other people with different stereos, or who concentrate on different
factors, could well reach a different opinion.

Just to set a point of reference, I have very eclectic tastes in music
but my personal reference point is how well a system handles the music
of voice and acoustic instruments. I've got a fairly simple system where
the source feeds an Image 65i tube amp (6550 outputs) to a pair of
Spendor SP1/2E speakers. Nothing fancy, but I really enjoy the way it

The touchscreen is obvious of course. Specifically, I'm curious about
 things like this -

It's in my bathroom now and I love it there because it's the only one
of my Squeezeboxes on which I really don't _have to_ use a remote -
which is what I need in a bathroom.

So from a usability perspective it's really good, though the only other
Squeezebox I sometimes use the built-in UI on is the Radio in the
kitchen, on all others I only control them remotely, music selection is
purely remotely (iPeng, obviously) except for the Touch.

How does the use of a USB HD compare to using the SB server software?
Does it eliminate the 2-10 sec delays so common with the server?
Having the music collection reside on the SB is my primary motivation
for getting a touch, is it worth it?

Don't know what server you use. If it's a decent one (not ReadyNAS or
something) and you still seeing these delays something else is going on
which will probably not be fixed by the Touch.

The server on the Touch is faster than a NAS and slower than a PC or
fast server. It's well usable.
If you _really_ want to go fast, get the 7.6 beta, that's the Touch's
server for big systems.

How does the user interface compare to the SB3 in terms of
intuitiveness friendliness? For instance, is it readable from across
the room? Does it use the same menus format?

Menus are different, but as much as I still love my SB3 I never
considered it usable using it's own UI. Touch is much better.

Readability across the screen is still better on the SB3 but the Touch
looks much cooler with the big cover art.
Especially if you use all the cool screen savers one can build with
Erland's CustomClock Applet

If I'm listening at nite with the lites off, is the Touch going to
light up the room with it's screen?

Face it: yes. I can leave out the light in my bathroom and find my
way.

Any usability quirks, headaches or assets that aren't obvious before
 owning a touch?

You have to keep in mind how the server works or you are going to be
confused: If you plug in a USB stick (or disc) it first scans the
library before showing stuff in the menus. Unfortunately it doesn't
talk about that at all so if you don't know what it's doing you can
easily think it doesn't work correctly.
That's quite confusing, I believe

What's your favorite thing (compared to SB3)?

That it's got a screen that is big enough to be able to actually find
music on the device.

 Least favorite?

That the display doesn't get dark

The thing you wish you knew before getting it?

Nothing. It's much better than what I expected it to be.

Audio Quality: I find it to be better than the SB3, which also came as
a surprise to me yet frankly I believe both are good enough and it's
easier (and more rewarding) to tweak the rest of your Audio chain.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch, HiFi, and Turntable - lots of questions need advice

2010-04-11 Thread mpower9

I am planning to get a Touch and am trying to figure out what kind of
set up to use it with.

Currently I have a over 20 year-old Sony bookshelf stero that is
getting rather cranky. The tape player and the CD player have some
eccentricities. I am trying to figure out what I will need for a system
once I get my Touch.

Do I want to keep what I have and just plug the Touch into the AUX port
of the existing system? Do I want to get a pair of good powered speakers
and get rid of the current system altogether and just have the Touch
attached directly. I am not an audiophile. I don't play ear-bleed music
or thumpa-dumpa base.

I have a very small CD collection (compared to some of the collections
mentioned in these Forums) and I am planning to rip them to a USB drive
to use with the Touch. At the moment I have hardly any digital music
files.

I do have a lot of vinyl records and cassetts. I have a gismo
(ARTsessiories USB Phono Plus) which I am using to (ever so slowly)
transfer my collection into digital format. In the mean time, can I use
the USB connection of the gizmo to play the vinyl directly on the Touch
or will the lack of a file system on the record or cassette prevent the
Touch from playing it? Once or twice a year all the relatives descend on
me for the holidays and we use the DVD player on my laptop to watch
movies on my 21 monitor (I don't have TV) and they like to plug the
sound into the hifi. Would I be able to run it through the Touch if I
got rid of the hifi?

As you can see from my questions, I am still a noob when it comes to
digital sound. (I have been sucked into this because I needed a new
clock radio and impulse bought a Squeezbox Radio--I love it. Who knew.
The only thing I have done with digital sound before is listen to
podcasts and audio books and record some hearings on my mp3 player.)

Thanks for your help.

 Thanks!

Sorry I wasn't clear. Let me try again.

1. The Lavry sounds like the Lavry whether I'm using the SB3 or the
Touch as the digital source for the DA-10.

2. As such, my original comments about the analog output of the Touch
compared to the Lavry still stand. On day 3 of listening, things are
still very, very close for me. I think the Lavry is ever so subtly
better, but it is in the territory where I have to really work at it to
notice.

So, in that sense, the analog output of the Touch is definitively
superior to the SB3.

Campfire is a simple web-based real-time group chat tool for business.
It makes real-time communication with 2-60 people as simple as
visisting a web page. It allows files, pictures, and images to be
posted and exchanged as well.

Beta Testers were invited to ask questions in real time on Campfire.
For example, if somebody found something strange or thought it might be

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch, HiFi, and Turntable - lots of questions need advice

If you are content with the sound of your current system and the
system's crankiness has nothing to do with the AUX input, I would say
stick with your bookshelf system. In the future you could upgrade that
if you want.

I have a very small CD collection (compared to some of the collections
mentioned in these Forums) and I am planning to rip them to a USB drive
to use with the Touch. At the moment I have hardly any digital music
 files.

Sounds like a good plan!

I do have a lot of vinyl records and cassetts. I have a gismo
(ARTsessiories USB Phono Plus) which I am using to (ever so slowly)
transfer my collection into digital format.

I have this device myself. It is awesome, I really enjoy using it and
it produces some very good recordings. I've recommended this device to
a bunch of people.

In the mean time, can I use the USB connection of the gizmo to play the
vinyl directly on the Touch or will the lack of a file system on the
record or cassette prevent the Touch from playing it?

There was talk of doing something like this. Somebody may have hacked
something to make this work. Certainly, out of the box this will not
work. At this point, anything that would work would be very
experimental.

Once or twice a year all the relatives descend on me for the holidays
and we use the DVD player on my laptop to watch movies on my 21
monitor (I don't have TV) and they like to plug the sound into the
hifi. Would I be able to run it through the Touch if I got rid of the
 hifi?

No, there's no input aside for USB and network connections on the
Touch.

Have fun with your venture into computer based digital audio!

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Disable WLAN on Squeezebox Touch

 Doing a Toyota?

I suppose that could be it. :) I guess only Phil can say if that part
of Valentino's post is what got to him.

Well, I guess it's (hopefully) possible Logitech -might- install a
future menu item that would be able to completely shut off the wifi -
especially since John S seems to have found a way to hack it via code
approach (even though, as he says, it won't persist between power
cycles). If they do this, I will almost certainly buy a Touch (or
two)...

What's the big deal? Making a hat out of foil is not difficult.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Sales or discounts?

Forgive me if this isn't kosher on this forum, but I found a coupon that
saves you $20 off a Touch at crutchfield.com. The code is 3A825 and the
offer expires 4/30. The site says temporarily out of stock, but I
suspect that will change soon. I didn't pull the trigger yet, as I want
to continue searching for a better deal during the next two weeks.
