A crossfeed plugin that doesn't interact with the user in anyway MIGHT be usable as is with a Touch using SBS on an external server. John S. I believe that Inguz on sbs can do this. It has a variable width control. Yes it would change both analogue and digital outputs. Bit-perfect replay would be lost of course (no matter where the volume control was set). I've done some comparisons with a couple external amps and direct into the Touch. Its a tough decision. A really good amp is better than the one in the Touch, BUT you have a set of wires and connectors in between which aren't there in the Touch. A really good headamp and really good interconnects will sound slightly better but its close. With less than great external equipment, just plug them in direct and enjoy. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox Touch Sound Quality with USB Drive
Phil, I almost purchased a Stefan Audio Art cable a few years ago when they were on special. However, I bought a hifi stand for $550 reduced from $900 instead. The reason why I haven't bought them since (the same reason I haven't rewired my mission 782 speakers) is that I feel they will remove the glow and warmth of the headphones. In short, they might be different (perhaps better), but they aren't HD650s anymore. And they are the same price as the Touch almost! And a significant fraction of the price of the HD800s. From a technical point of view, I've often been concerned about impedance matching when rewiring. Reviews also suggested the presence of microphony on the aftermarket cables, which is a pain. Sure upgrades like cables might offer you a way of improving your system without selling up and buying a whole new kit. But I think it is better to make fewer and larger leaps, saving yourself money. My Nordost cable costs the same as the HD800s all up, and I'd rather have them and copper cable than just the Nordost. My view anyway, learning the hard way. -- bingcrosby bingcrosby's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34653 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77158 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

That looks like part of the setup screen, which comes from the firmware, not SBS. So the size button may not work at this particular point. What size was the text set at before you got to this point? The Touch arrived Friday and I spent quite a bit of time the past couple of days listening to the Touch. I level-matched the SB3/Lavry output with the Touch and synced the two players. I was then able to switch between the two inputs for back-to-back comparison. The difference between the SB3 analog out and though the Lavry is quite noticeable to me (though I don't consider the SB3 analog bad - just rather pedestrian.) In comparing the Touch analog out to the SB3/Lavry, the difference is extremely subtle in my book. I have to strain to hear the difference. I am very impressed and will probably end up selling my Lavry. In audiophile-land, the Touch has no right to sound as good as it does for the price. ;-) However, I'm sure others will disagree with that thinking, but that's fine by me. When I have to strain to hear the difference between two pieces of equipment, that's a sign for me to let go of the issue and just enjoy the music. It is just good rational decision making. I see so many people who let other people determine their preferences that it is refreshing to see the other side of the coin. -- Kevin Haskins Kevin Haskins's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=30729 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77145 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Valentino;533136 Wrote: Is there a way to display the Touch volume setting in dB yet? If not: To whom do I donate? Have been using and loving this part of Herger's MusicInfoSCR plugin for Classic and Transporter, but as far as I understand this plugin is not compatible with the Touch. You could do it in dB of gain or amount of voltage gain but obviously it wouldn't translate to dB of output because you would also need to know the gain of the preamp/amplifier attached and the sensitivity of the loudspeaker. Then of course you would need to know the measurement distance so once you get to actual dB output the situation becomes complex and dependent upon several system variables. So...dB of gain is somewhat arbitrary as is the volume bar. -- Kevin Haskins Kevin Haskins's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=30729 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77161 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Boulderguy;533028 Wrote: The touchscreen is obvious of course. Specifically, I'm curious about things like this - It's in my bathroom now and I love it there because it's the only one of my Squeezeboxes on which I really don't _have to_ use a remote - which is what I need in a bathroom. So from a usability perspective it's really good, though the only other Squeezebox I sometimes use the built-in UI on is the Radio in the kitchen, on all others I only control them remotely, music selection is purely remotely (iPeng, obviously) except for the Touch. How does the use of a USB HD compare to using the SB server software? Does it eliminate the 2-10 sec delays so common with the server? Having the music collection reside on the SB is my primary motivation for getting a touch, is it worth it? Don't know what server you use. If it's a decent one (not ReadyNAS or something) and you still seeing these delays something else is going on which will probably not be fixed by the Touch. The server on the Touch is faster than a NAS and slower than a PC or fast server. It's well usable. If you _really_ want to go fast, get the 7.6 beta, that's the Touch's server for big systems. How does the user interface compare to the SB3 in terms of intuitiveness friendliness? For instance, is it readable from across the room? Does it use the same menus format? Menus are different, but as much as I still love my SB3 I never considered it usable using it's own UI. Touch is much better. Readability across the screen is still better on the SB3 but the Touch looks much cooler with the big cover art. Especially if you use all the cool screen savers one can build with Erland's CustomClock Applet If I'm listening at nite with the lites off, is the Touch going to light up the room with it's screen? Face it: yes. I can leave out the light in my bathroom and find my way. Any usability quirks, headaches or assets that aren't obvious before owning a touch? You have to keep in mind how the server works or you are going to be confused: If you plug in a USB stick (or disc) it first scans the library before showing stuff in the menus. Unfortunately it doesn't talk about that at all so if you don't know what it's doing you can easily think it doesn't work correctly. That's quite confusing, I believe What's your favorite thing (compared to SB3)? That it's got a screen that is big enough to be able to actually find music on the device. Least favorite? That the display doesn't get dark The thing you wish you knew before getting it? Nothing. It's much better than what I expected it to be. Audio Quality: I find it to be better than the SB3, which also came as a surprise to me yet frankly I believe both are good enough and it's easier (and more rewarding) to tweak the rest of your Audio chain. -- pippin --- see iPeng, the Squeezebox iPhone remote, at penguinlovesmusic.com pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77145 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
