Is it very sensitive ? the proximity sensor.

proximity to what btw, if it is phrone to errors due to interference I
can understand why they hesitate.

You might need parameters for the size (or bioelectric signature) of

[SlimDevices: Touch] 500 track maximum in playlist?

2010-04-15 Thread tebling

I just brought my Touch home, unpacked, did the firmware update, and
connected it to SBS 7.5.0 over ethernet. Regardless of whether I add
tracks from the Touch itself or from the web interface, I cannot add
more than 500 tracks - otherwise it comes up with a message saying
playlist full and caps the playlist to 500 items.

Please tell me this isn't a limitation of the Touch?! I have a SB3 and
even a SliMP3, neither of which have this problem.

 real answer...

I strongly doubt it will. I'm not aware of any SD readers that can now
handle SDHC due to a software upgrade. Hardware matters. What you're
asking for is the equivalent of an old DVD player now being able to
play Blu-Ray just because of a software upgrade. Dream on!

I'm willing to bet the Squeezebox Touch 2 will have a much larger
screen and SDXC capability, but that will be several years away.

Wow, that would be really dumb on Logitech's part if it's true. It
should at least be able to handle 512 tracks. Where did their software
developers go to school?

All joking aside, I see no technological reason (besides memory) for it

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Access the connectet USB Drive?

2010-04-15 Thread hawaiijim

I was hoping to store my songs on an SDHC card connected directly to the
Touch, but I just realized that my computer's card reader only handles
SD (2 GB max), not SDHC (32 GB max). I use an SDHC card for my camera,
but I just transfer files to my computer via the camera's USB cable.

If I want to permanently store my songs on an SDHC card connected to
the Touch, I assume from what's been said above that I could copy them
from my computer via WiFi, but that would be slow. (I could just do it
overnight while I sleep.)

Is it possible to plug a USB drive into the Touch and copy files from
it to an SDHC card also connected to the Touch? I see no hardware
reason to prevent it, but I don't know what the Touch's software
interface is like.

Adding insult to injury apparently logitech has been selling them

of order.

If it's Logitechs' stratergy to get Joe Sixpack his Squeezebox on the

to listen to Pandora... and maybe fail because he has no wireless
network at home... That's fine.
However if you want to keep the userbase happy, who work as free
ambasadors to the brand and probably sell more of these devices than a
presentation unit in the back of a store... why not just throw us the
occasional bone?

So not d

And just to clarify, it is a soft limit. From the link posted above:

Goto Server Settings Performance and set the Max Playlist Length to
what you want it to be.

If you set it to zero, then the playlist length is unlimited, which
AFAIK was the behavior previous to 7.5.0.

As for the US$225 price, I'm guessing that's about what it will sell
for on Amazon.com once they have adequate stock. (Of course, most of
you Europeans have a VAT, so you'll never see that price. That's not
Logitech's fault, though.)

2010-04-15 Thread nervoteso

aubuti;535035 Wrote:
 You could try the following:

 1. Make a backup copy of your prefs directory. That will include
server.prefs, plus any prefs settings for plugins.

1a (optional). Make a list of all of your settings. A semi-convenient
way to do this is by taking screenshots of the SBS settings pages with
 your existing settings.

 2. Install the new Squeezebox Server. If you are coming from 7.3.3 it
probably will overwrite your preferences. (It shouldn't do that if you
are coming from 7.4.2, but then a lot of people had their 7.3.3
overwritten by 7.4.2, so you're neither ahead of the game or behind.)

 3. Check to see if your preferences were overwritten. If not, then
 you're done.

 4. If your settings were overwritten, stop SBS. This is important. Then
overwrite the new prefs files with your the backup you made in Step 1.

 5. Restart SBS and see if your settings are familiar. If so, you're
 done.

 6. If your old settings aren't restored, then you'll have to reset them
manually. This could be easier if you did the optional step 1a above.

Note that if steps 1-5 seem to be too much trouble, you can always do
 only steps 2, 3, and 6 instead ;o)

One other important change to note is that in 7.3.3 the program was
called squeezecenter and ran under the username 'squeezecenter'. In
7.4.x and 7.5.x it is called squeezeboxserver and runs under the
username 'squeezeboxserver'. I expect that sstos will take care of
these things for you, but thought I'd give a heads up just in case.

Thanks a lot!
would it be better to upgrade to 7.4.2 and then to 7.5? I'd have more
chanches? also if i upgrade to 7.4.2 should i uninstall squeezecenter
and then install the 4.6 or can i update from the SSTOS menu? will i
lose my plugins?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Access the connectet USB Drive?

2010-04-15 Thread marlo

Hi everybody,

I initially filled my 2.5 USB-drive by directly attaching it to my WHS
homeserver and copying the music files with robocopy.
Then I connected the drive to the touch and after configuring the share
I now can access the share from my homeserver.
So far so good.
Now when I run my robocopy job again (this time with the share on the
touch as a destination) robocopy tells me that the local files are
newer and wants to update the files on the share which is, regarding
the write performance of the touch, quite a mess.
Am I doing something wrong or is there any issue/difference with the
timestamps of the files when the drive is attached to whs (i've
experienced something then similar in the past with a NAS that ran
linux)?

Thx marlo

Yes, prices in Europe are generally much higher, even when we consider
the difference in taxes. Europe is also a somewhat smaller market, and
a 2-year unconditional warranty is mandatory in most countries. Add the
fact that you're an early adopter and you know that something has to

If you don't like the price level of a Touch, you can always look at
the competition (depending on your requirements). The Sagem My Web 500
comes to mind (82 euro), or the similar priced Muvid IR 615.

They don't offer the level of customisation that Logitech offers, but
they do what they're supposed to do, and offer native NAS and USB
support without the need to install server software. No Facebook nor
Pandora support however. You get what you pay for.

Being an early adopter never bothered me. I'm not asking for a rebait
on the numerous Slimp3's that I bought nearly 10 years ago.

The EU has nearly double the population of the US, if you count the
whole continent europe gets up to nearly 3 x the population of the US.
If europeans really is that much richer than americans, then they must
sell a lot more in europe than in the states. If the device price is
double then the profit margin a lot more that that, therefore they have
to sell less devices over here to get their cost back...

Slight progress.

The mapped drive was to media-sda1 on Squeezebox Touch -

logs on Squeezebox Touch - squeezeboxtouch (Squeezeboxtouch)

that contains cores/nmbd,cores/smbd and watchdog which are empty
and 7 files
(log.main_pc,log.smbd,log.nmbd,log.0.0.0.0,log.192.168.2.17,wtmp
and messages).

I've attached messages as it is the largest and looks like a
logfile.

However by the time I got to this point I am seeing slightly different
problems from OP:- I am trying to use STS to stream FLAC synchronised
to itself, a Receiver and a Radio.

The sync is correct but frequently interrupted (rebuffering) and
sometimes stops (but switching Touch in and out of standby seems to
restart it). At 9:37 I had message problem connecting to Squeezebox
Touch Server (may not have got wording spot on) on the Touch itself.

Not sure if this is useful to you.

I had just selected a new album which was playing (though had
stuttered), stepped out and came back to silence.

This time there are two Message files.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] data rate for internet radio?

2010-04-15 Thread toby10

Yes, but how and where you see the bitrate of the station varies based
on a number of factors including the stream provider and where you are
in the Touch screens.

- from Now Playing screen touch the + or Now Playing button
scroll down to format bitrate, or select More Info
Note: this won't work with RadioTime feeds or items in the Internet
Radio menu's

- from the menu listings of stations touch hold the station name
this works on most any station, but not Music Services

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Track stops playing

2010-04-15 Thread DigitalMitch

Tripmaster,

are you using Touch standalone or with any other players?

I've been experiencing rebuffering all morning using Touch to play
synchronised FLAC to a radio and receiver. There are some logs in
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77322page=2 but I'm
hoping to keep issues separate so that is focussed on 'Local Music
service has been stopped'.

I'd just switched the receiver back to my main server (WHS) and
switched off the radio. My plan was to just listen to the Touch for
some hours and see if buffering was better or worse. I had one instance
of rebuffering in about 10 minutes then ...

moved 6 files on both WHS and the shared Touch USB drive that were
causing an album to be duplicated...
SB3 on desk (connected to WHS) but not playing lost connection to
server!
A few seconds later the Touch stopped playing and went blank, it went
back through power up cycle (logitech logo et al.) and then
Sorry, your device had to restart due to a system error. Is it OK if

SB3 went blank and then came back connected to Squeezebox Touch.
I switched SB3 back to WHS library after a while, so if that had also
fallen over, it could have restarted before I checked.

I honestly don't know if the crash is related to buffering, the file
move or the other thread problems - have numerous other niggles but
don't want to overload the forums with separate threads which may be
related.

I think it's a little bit longer - more like 15 or more seconds. To
perform a factory reset hold the button until you see the Logitech logo
come up. You should then see a screen that says something like 'factory
settings restored' and then it will reboot. A simple reboot requires
just a press of the button.

Not sure how the problems relate (if at all) and sorry if cross-posting
is confusing (trying to keep to one issue in one thread but have too
many issues at once).

Unfortunately the 'message' log only seems to track from restart!!

Interestingly the 'new' log files have no modified date

After Touch restart and the message about sending the data to you (i
choose Yes, Always), I didn't get a 'server starting' message nor the
warning about ejecting USB devices (which prompts me to choose
'Squeezebox Server' to watch scan progress. So I choose some music on
the Touch first, which is now playing well but...
the Touch scanner is 'hung' at scanning media for music files, please
wait... for over fifteen minutes (10 with music playing and 5 after
end of album).

In vi you can use :x to save and exit. Have never used :wq together,
theoretically it should work, but am used to using :x by habit to save
and exit. Always used reboot within ssh though. Haven't tried pulling
the plug to restart, this may be the difference - like hardware reboot
vs software reboot? - I don't know and haven't tested it.
I probably never though of using the plug option to reboot because I'm
too lazy ;-) You see, my Touch is in the lounge at one end of the house
and I'm in the office at the other end of the house. Too far to walk for
a hardware reboot every time I've made a change. Typing reboot and
hitting enter is much easier :-)

No. I've never even heard of C4DEALZ before (and I wouldn't buy from
them for that very reason). But, since all the other Squeezeboxes are
sold by Amazon, I assume Amazon will be selling the Touch themselves
before long.

That said, my post above does reflect my self-interest. I want to know
how good the Touch is before I buy it. I'm dying to get one, but I
worry that the delayed release may indicate that it's inherently buggy.

I don't mind finding the bugs. I don't want to use it as an alarm
clock, to turn on/off any other equipment with it or link to facebook.
I just want to listen to music.

The issue is similar in Canada, where the CDN dollar is higher than the
US dollar and yet the MSRP is $379.00 CDN. The Touch is not yet
available in Canada and one rumour has it that it will be May before
the CDN stock arrives. I can't speak to any extraordinary warranty
requirements in Canada, but the packaging and software do have to be in
both English and French. Still, the extra cost for this and other
expenses such as cross-border shipping and customs brokerage do not
justify the huge price disparity. There is no duty on items like this
under NAFTA.

As I have said in other posts, I do not mind spending a bit more for a
product if I can buy it locally. But, I do mind being gouged on the
price if the price delta is too large. The Internet has helped to bring
some of this price discrimination in Canada under control because
consumers can check prices around the world and register their
dissatisfaction in one way or another if they think they are being
ripped off. (A sunglass manufacturer once tried to block Canadian IP
addresses to prevent Canadians from checking US prices--a lame and
laughable attempt to prevent the knowledge of discrimatory pricing from
becoming more widely known.)

It does, however, baffle me that companies would continue such blatant
price discrimination when people have such easy access to pricing
information the world over.

First, there is the damage that this discrimination does to their
reputation--ie, it creates the perception that consumers exist in other
countries only to be squeezed for their money and exploited by limiting
purchasing options (eg, not being able to purchase from the Logitech US
site directly). And, as you have so ably pointed out it is slap in the
face to early adopters who have contributed to the promotion of the
product. It is actually because of you and others in the Logitech
community that I am interested in purchasing one of these and in fact
have pulled some CAT5e cable from my server to my stereo in order to
accomodate Ethernet connectivity with a Touch.

Second, it hurts the relationship between retailers and manufacturers,
who really should be partners in the promotion and selling of these
products. If I were a CDN retailer I would be pretty upset to see a
large chunk of my potential business go directly to the US because the
CDN distributor wouldn't sell units to me at a competitive price. Who
would want to be a retailer of Logitech products when consumer outrage
over price discrimination would force me to cut my profit margin to the
extent that I could only compete if I sold them for a loss or for a such
a slim margin that it is not worth my while to sell them? This in turn
must hurt the sales of the CDN distributors and negative consequences
on the distribution chain.

The US dollar is declining against almost every major currency in the
world. One would hope that such blatant price discrimination cannot
last over the long term. Consumers do have options. In my case, I have
a US currency bank account and credit card and travel to the US a few
times a year--I can pick up one in the US at a much reduced price to
what I would have to pay in Canada. I would rather not have to do this,
but I will if the blatant price discrimation continues. Or, I will
simply choose not to purchase one at all and register my
dissatisfaction that way--that is also an option.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] standalone Touch access to iTunes playlists ??

2010-04-15 Thread michaelday

iTunes integration is important. For me, the ability for the Squeezebox
access to the iTunes playlists is an extremely valuable feature! I'm
sure there's MANY others who really appreciate this. I lve the
power to have quick access to nicely tailored playlists from my music
library, to instantly trigger the SB to play different moods of music.
and I believe iTunes is the tool-of-choice to easily create playlists.

I think the other aspects of iTunes integration ( extracting iTunes
artwork, and to not include songs that are unchecked in iTunes ) are
much less essential features.

I appreciate the complications that could be involved with the
different directory paths to music - with having the Touch mount the
USB drive directly in standalone mode. But is Peter right above, where
there's some logic rules to could be applied to transform the paths used
by the windows computer to an appropriate path that is needed by TinySC
to find the music files ?? such that this logic could be implemented
to be performed by TinySC automatically, for making this iTunes
integration work for the Touch in standalone mode?

 (http://ca.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=1006051807490), right?

If you live in Canada, you must purchase from the Amazon.ca Web site,
not Amazon.com. The Amazon.ca Web site does not have the same range of
products (especially in electronics) that the Amazon.com site has. And,
when it does the have same products, Amazon.ca pricing is related to the
CDN not US MSRP. It is the same story with Crutchfield and TigerDirect.
They both have the CDN Web sites that list products with the
discriminatory pricing intact. At one time, you were able to buy
directly from the US Web sites, but they must have realized that there
was more money to be squeezed out of Canadians by setting up CDN
versions of their online stores. Or it could simply be they are forced
in too many occasions to get product from the CDN distributors who
provide inventory at a higher price for CDN sales.

However, it is still possible to find online US retailers who will ship
internationally. Usually, the mark up on shipping is a bit out of line,
but even considering this mark up, it is often cheaper to buy directly
from the US retailer. And, of course, there is always eBay. When the
initial demand subsides, the Touch units will start appearing on eBay.
It is not unheard to see something like 20-30 dollars for shipping on a
product of the approximate weight and dimensions of the Touch.
(Strangely, it is ofent a lot cheaper for shipping from Hong Kong to
Canada than from a US address). However, it is usually a no brainer to
make the purchase from an eBayer (discounted price of, say, 225 + 20 =
250 vs 379 + shipping in Canada). There is more risk in the purchase
and returns can be problematic. But, most people would find the risk
acceptable if they could save over 100.00 on the purchase.

Eh it's actually made in china and logitech is a swiss company, so
stock arrives from china to each market.

I'm a early adopter I bent over and prepared myself to be screwed
autumn 2009, but I have a Touch *now* :-D I can rise my back now.

But they do gouge the price the pre-sales blurb from logitech was -same
price as SB Classic- This is essentially true in US. SB3 (with wifi) was
introduced at aprox 300$

But this does not correspond to the EU price, SB3 was more expensive in
EU than in US right ?
So then we may have the right to expect that the Touch would be
released in EU at the same price as SB3 aka Classic was originally
going for.

But No it is even more expensive ! (here is the price gouge hint hint)

That irritates me little -same price as SB3- was promised from logitech
on this very forum, live up to that on *all* markets, given that same
price is what SB3 was at that market.

thing drives all prices in all Capitalist areas and that is Supply and

I would say that Logitech has a fiduciary responsibility to maximize
profits, not just to price units at the highest price that the markets
will bear. So, the calculation of price in a particular market is
neither straighforward or simple. If discriminatory pricing damages
reputation and hurts the international distribution channels to the
extent that sales volume suffers and potential profits are not
maximized, they would have an obligation to reduce prices in those
market segments. I am not sure if they are anywhere near that point,
since consumer outrage at discriminatory pricing is muted by the fact
that many who are patient can find ways around discriminatory pricing
in artifically created market segments by purchasing the product from a
US retailer at some point in the future. But, they and other
manufacturers are not immune to these pressures, which will only grow
as the US dollar continues its decline for the short term.

Sure, it's no problem at all, I do more or less exactly this in the
module in TrackStat that import ratings from iTunes.

For it to work with the bundled iTunes plugin it can't easily be
implemented as a third party plugin though. However, it would be
possible for a third party developer to implement a new separate iTunes
Playlist Importer plugin that had this logic.

My main point of this thread was that Logitech is/was selling the

Exactly and complaining in a forum will not solve this, the only
indication the market will understand is if people doesn't buy the
product. Unfortunately that would mean that you can't get the best
audio streaming product on the market if you live in the wrong country,
most of us doesn't accept that so we buy it anyway to the higher price
and the market continues to do the same thing in the future.

As mentioned, this isn't specific to Logitech, all most big
international companies does the same thing.

I'm not recommending people to not buy the Touch, it's worth all you
have to pay for it. I'm just saying that either you accept the higher
price in your country or you go through the hassle of having to wait a
bit and order it from US through some intermediate company since that
seems to be cheaper. Believe me, you aren't going to make Logitech
change their price strategy by posting your complains here in the
forum, the people that need to see the complains don't even read this
forum.

I was only getting to about 25% of my album art scan before I reduced

[SlimDevices: Touch] Turn off other players from Touch

2010-04-15 Thread DigitalMitch

I'm running Touch as a server (STS) and also using it to control and
serve sync'd files to a Radio and a Receiver.

The Off problem.

I am having trouble switching the other device on and/or off. If I
select them via choose player and then use the Touch Standby button.
The remote player stops, the Touch screen goes dark but the Touch
continues playing (and displaying the time). If I want to control the
Touch or server as player, I need to bring it out of this mode. The
only option seems to be, tap the screen, hit the standby and the remote
device switches back on.

The ON problem.

This is a bit more intermittant, and was working okay when I started
typing this, but has since stopped.
Right now my controller 'attached' to a separate WHS SBS server only
sees the two players 'attached' to that server. This makes swapping a
server from one to the other difficult.
Occasionally I have done this this by 'getting' the controller to see
the STS by using Switch Library within My Music to switch to STS.
However the Controller can't see STS at the moment and this has the
undesired affect of moving a player from one server to the other.
At this point the webui can see all players as can the STS, which are
no good if I'm in another room with the controller!

If I've missed something obvious I'm happy to learn/be
corrected/ridiculed.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Local music service has been stopped due to a problem

2010-04-15 Thread DigitalMitch

KJAM,

the continual rescanning has been driven by several reasons.
1) I had to tweak delete a load of duplicates (my USB harddrive is
acting as family backup so have sister and GF's music on it, which
overlaps). If I could have pointed at a file within USB this may have
been avoided
2) I was then fixing the tags on the non-dupe's in their libraries.
3) Then I powered it all off overnight
4) Then I have switched it off numerous times to try and get it to
behave!

I finished tweaking the files early this morning and this afternoon it
seems to have settled down - we'll see what tomorrow brings.

Note, since mine are embedded in FLAC they maybe handled differently ?

Mitch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] standalone Touch access to iTunes playlists ??

 Thanks Erland,
I'm not a developer. Is there a process ( or some other way to
motivate :-) to get Logitech or a third party developer to build a new
separate iTunes Playlist Importer plugin that would have this logic ?

- Logitech: Post an enhancement request at http://bugs.slimdevices.com
and ask people to vote for it
- Third party developer: Try to make someone interested, asking in the
3rd party plugin section could be a good start.

If you get Apple to implement FLAC support in iTunes, I'll implement an
iTunes Playlist Importer plugin for free. :-)

There is a small problem which I forgot to mention though. The build-in
server doesn't officially support third party plugins. It's still
possible to use third party plugins but you will need to install them
manually through ssh (for example by installing putty on Windows).

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How do you upgrade Touch

2010-04-15 Thread erland

Kuben72;535610 Wrote:
How do you upgrade Touch's internal SBS? Is it done like when the other
players download a firmware or can choose to upgrade to a
 beta-version?

It's included in the firmware.

You can force an upgrade to a nightly release by installing the latest
nightly build of SBS on a computer and temporarily connect the Touch to
it.

Without a standalone SBS, the Touch firmware will be upgraded through
MySB.com and then it will only be upgraded to official releases (no
beta versions).

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Help setting up Touch

2010-04-15 Thread erland

Make sure you haven't enabled MAC filtering in your router that results
in that it can't get a network connection. MAC filtering is usually
disabled, so if you haven't enabled it manually that's probably not the
cause. If it tries to connect to MySB.com it feels like this shouldn't
be the problem.

There has been some disturbances in the MySB.com service in Europe
during the last week. Possibly that could have caused the setup process
to get in some unexpected state.

You can try to do a factory reset by holding the reset button above the
power connector until the Logitech logo appears on the screen, I think
it takes about 15 seconds or so. Release the reset button as soon as
you see the Logitech logo on the screen.

Before you try the factory reset, you can open up a web browser towards
http://mysqueezebox.com and make sure it's available.

I'd recommend you to use wired connection during the setup process to
make sure your problems aren't caused by some network problem. You can
re-configure it to use Wireless through the settings menu later if
that's what you like to use.

If that doesn't work, I'd recommend that you contact Logitech support:
http://www.logitechsqueezebox.com/support/contact-support.html
