I'm sorry mate, but I don't know what you mean.

I have realised, though, that I have called myself a cynic but have
Nordost interconnects!
In my defence they only cost me 70 quid used, and they don't muffle the
sound like a lot of interconnects I tried (van den hul being

Correct - it's a "feature" of some DAC's unfortunately. The Touch is
behaving correctly. There are plenty of DAC's that are engineered
properly to handle sample rate changes gracefully.

There IS a workaround (that I use for other reasons) which is to use
SOX to resample everything to 96k on the fly during playback, thus
avoiding sample rate changes between tracks from different albums.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] On a positive note (Touch's analog out)

2011-10-05 Thread adamdea

The stereophile measurements for the SBT suggest it is really very well
engineered. It probably should not be a surprise that it sounds good. I
am gradually coming round to the view that

1 competently designed digital source components are pretty good these
days.

2 the difference between them (or even the difference between them and
competently designed expensive digital source components) is much less
than the differences to be gained at the speaker/room end of things.

3 If you can implement DRC on the touch it will probably make more
difference than a front end upgrade.

4 You can get digital front ends to sound very different by buggering
them up though.

5 It is relatively easy to plug in source components. Messing around
with speakers is more of a hassle, involves complex space and aethestic
choices and compromises, and it likely to have unpredictable results if
you don;t audition in your room first due to acoustic interactions

6 Hence people like box-swapping at the front end even though it makes
more sense to concentrate on the speaker/room end.

I recently compared over some time 2 DACS which had pretty well nothing
in common AFAIK and I don't think I could really discern any difference
between them at all.

OK, if you prefer a lengthier exposition, they emphasize bass, whilst
simultaneously rolling off the treble, with a congested midband and
restricted dynamics.

I too run A2s in my kitchen with a Touch and have been pleased with
results. It makes for avery neat and minimally cluttered system.

Like your idea of using AD1 stands in reverse pointing downwards, as
mine are also currently at either end of 6ft high shelf, pointing at
head level when standing, but over head when sitting. I been think
about getting better sound dispersion lower in the room, so will steal
your idea. Cheers.

I also run A5s in the bedroom with an SB Receiver. They have a far
better soundstage and resolution than the A2s, but of course cost that
bit more.

The A2s at £110 represent very good value imho.

That's how they sound to you.

I can absolutely assure you that whilst a cable IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE
THINGS IT IS CONNECTED TO can definitely roll-off/boost the treble
and/or roll-off/boost the bass, it can't actually "restrict" dynamics
or make the midband "congested". Those things are beyond the
capabilities of a wire which only has resistance, capacitance and
inductance going for it.

It could well hint at an updated version, as many other retailers are
out of stock as well. I was just frightened that they would stop
production completely, as any viable alternatives cost a lot more
money.

You would not then be surprised what really bad design of signal cables
with unstable audiphool grade amps with weird impedance and other really
substandard electrical design can do :)

Some part of audiophooldom are a kind of self-fulfilling, I bet there
is equipment that sound radically different with different cables ;)(
before it burns out when oscillation or something ).

If you like RFI/EMI unscreened cables like some Nordost,Kimber and
Goertz must mate "really" well with some extreme bandwith stuff (the
holy slewrate ), The idiocy off unscreened signal cable IS probably an
attempt to make cables that are truly "different " ?

But with normal modern op-amp or transistor based design with sane
impedances and sane bandwidths and "normal" cable lengths and "good"
cables it would not be possible to discerns any difference , and yet
the audiphools says that they can hear sonic characteristics of
different -metals- ! nutters .

Woke up this morning, went downstairs powered the receiver and pressed
the touch and music! its working not sure why but all the
stations/spotify are working perfectly, sounds good too. Tried both the
digital and RCA connectors and i think the digital connection sounds
marginally better (going into an Arcam receiver).

Now all i have to do is get the ipeng app on the ipad to control it and
I am done and can move onto ordering a NAS, though I must admit this
recent bout of technological incompetence on my part has knocked my
confidence a bit on the NAS front. Was thinking about the LG N1T1 NAS

pairing this with SB touch?

Thanks for all the advice and thanks to all those who took the time to

not all NAS can run the SBS software needed ,check the 3rd party
hardware forum for which mini servers plug computers and nas boxes that
are in use ( vortexbox seems optimal as pluganplay for this ).
It can actually be more struggle to use a NAS than installing som low

To get a feel for what the SBS serversoftware does, why not run it on a
computer you already have, that costs nothing and gives you some

[SlimDevices: Touch] Coolio - iPeng can not find tiny SBS

2011-10-05 Thread cvj

Coolio,

I just bought a SB Touch - and I am not able to get iPeng on my iPad to
find the "tiny SBS".

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought that the tinySBS would appear
on iPeng just like the PC based SBS or my squeezebox.com do, but it
does not.

Since the purpose of getting the Touch was to eliminate the PC from my
setup - this is really frustrating!

I know that iPeng can "see" the Touch by choosing my squeezebox.com,
but that creates a problem: My setup is very simple using a Touch
without any USB drive attached listening to Spotify premium. iPeng on
the iPad is great when I am connected to the PC-based server, showing
the album art in the Spotify "library", but when I am connected to
Spotify using my squeezebox.com this feature is missing in ipeng...it
just gives an ugly text based list without any art. Meanwhile, the
Touch's screen shows the art.

Please help me solve this problem ! Is it a misunderstanding on my part
or is it something else?

OK, some more info:
I don't fully understand the part with the text-based list, iPeng
should always have artwork when using Spotify, even when you use
Logitech's Spotify support.

Another aspect is that the 3rd party Spotify plugin (Spotify Premium)
is superior to Logitech's implementation (which seems to be a choice
actually made by Spotify, not Logitech). However, that plugin needs a
full-blown Squeezebox Server to run, it won't run with TinySBS, even if
you enable that by connecting a USB drive or SD card.

In my Touch set-up, I adjust the volume of my Pre (Emotiva USP-1) to a

I do the same such that the touch volume is rarely BELOW 70% then
primarily control volume with touch digital volume control via ipeng,
etc. If the touch is at 100 then this is aboutcas loud as I would ever
want. If an odd time that I want even louder, I crank up the
preamplifier volume a bit. But this would be rare. A party maybe.

[SlimDevices: Touch] linear power supplies, done right can improve the Touch.

2011-10-05 Thread Gazjam

Been listening to something over the last couple of days, knew the SB3
supply could be improved on, but the stock Touch switcher? Naa.

uhm..yes it can.
Clean linear power supply can do it.
Dont groan.. :)
I wouldn't put pen to paper if it wasn't something special.

What I'm using is a two box, linear psu custom designed by someone who
knows his onions...

A word from the designer...

Why a two box solution?
Well, the idea came from the fact that its a bit silly having a
regulator thats several foot from the load its supplying. Just looking
at the voltage across the load you can see the regulator its trying to
control it at the end of a long stick. So the idea was to try and get
the regulator as close as possible to the load. And after that thought,
given that I have more control over both sides of the regulator, I
thought something a bit more interesting than a stock three pin reg
would be called for. The regulator in the little box isn't discrete as
such because it uses a low noise op amp as a error amp and a descret
mosfet to control the output. I can also pack some paralleled caps in
there to try and get closert to a fast responding small regulator.
First stage regulator and transformer out the way, final high speed low
noise regulator close to the load. Just looking how the load voltage
varies shows that you get at least a order of magnitude closer
regulator than using a three pin regulator on the end of a wire.

Common sense electrical engineering?
I'm sure it measures well too...

(I have no commercial affiliation with the product or its designer,
just had a chance to hear an early example of it. I'm happy to
recommend it.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Adding Buttons on the Touch Screen

2011-10-05 Thread cparker

I put an article on my website about changing/hiding buttons on the
touch, so I dont see why you couldnt change an existing button and make
it do something else, its only going to be calling a power off
function.

You can test against Squeeze play rather than your touch, until you get
the code right. Plus you will need to replace the code each time the
touch updates its firmware as your changes will get overwritten.

I'd like to expand the hack section on my site, so let me know how you
get on.

Cheers

[SlimDevices: Touch] Tone Controls for SB Touch?

2011-10-05 Thread autoformer

I have several SB Touch units and find them very useful in applications
around the house, ranging from high end systems to "kitchen radio" type
applications connected to powered speakers.

On my own systems, I run the Touch into a good DAC, but In my wife's
small library, in the interest of simplicity, I am using the Squeezebox
Touch analog outputs direct to a single ended triode tube amp I built,
which drives a pair of high efficiency full range drivers. It sounds
very good, but I'd like to be able to do a bit of mild EQ. Is there
any way to do simple (bass/treble) tone control on the SB Touch?

Honestly, I never understood the practice of eliminating tone controls
that started back in the 80s. My McIntosh preamps all have tone
controls with a bypass, which works just great. Not all music is
well-produced and a lot of the material we all enjoy could use a little
tone control here and there. A lot of that good 70s rock needs eq
help.

So, is there any viable DSP plug-in or something that would allow this,
or am I going to be assembling a little tone control circuit to put
inline between the Touch and my amp?

I was going to say... You're one swipe away from the power button.
Hardly worth worrying about.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch keeps scanning music folder...

2011-10-05 Thread sendermen

Since the 7.6 updates my SB Touch really worked a lot better and more
stable. Yesterday during music playback there was a sudden poof crash
and the SB did a restart. Then it prompted for the 7.6.1-r9486 update.

Now after installation, there are two problems:

1 I cannot access my music folder, it says:
"music folder is not available while scanning"
Normally the Touch finishes scanning in about 20 minutes, but now it's
been on on for 10 hours. I tried restarting, starting and stopping the
SB server, ejecting the HD etc. but to no avail.

2 I cannot modify any of the files and cannot add music tracks via my
network.
I get permission errors when I try to remove files on the HDD via my
network. This used to work fine.

In the messages log there are two errors:
Oct 6 06:39:39 squeezeplay: ERROR squeezebox.server.cache -
SlimServer.lua:894 _getArtworkThumbSink(/music/463/cover_180x180_m.png)
error: keep-alive timeout

Oct 6 06:39:50 squeezeplay: ERROR squeezebox.server.cache -
SlimServer.lua:894 _getArtworkThumbSink(/music/462/cover_180x180_m.png)
error: inactivity timeout

Now I'd love to delete this file, but obviously I can't because I don't
have access to the folder...

Does anyone have an idea why my Touch is behaving like this and how to
solve this issue? Thanks!

[SlimDevices: Touch] Feature request that would make my user experience so much better

2011-10-05 Thread sendermen

The SB touch has been performing more stable and there are almost no
problems any more for me to use it. It generally stays online and I
don't have to keep restarting the samba server. Yeaah!

One issue that remains is working with playlists.
I'd like one option in the more ("+") menu which would solve the issues
my girlfriend and I have. I don't want to use software on a computer for
creating playlists, I want to add music from song mix playback.

How playlists normally work for many people:
You hear a music file (cool dance track) in your library and you want
to add it to a specific playlist (party-dance). You don't always want
to add it to the current playlist. You certainly do not want to open
the party-dance playlist and search for the file again and add it.

I'd be so happy with the following option in the more menu ("+"):
*Save to a playlist*

After that, a list with the current playlists is presented. You can add
the music file to one of these playlists or create a new playlist under
a new name. A bit similar to the save to favorites function.

I think this would be such a simple solution for the issues many of us
seem to have.

Or is there a plugin that offers this exact functionality?

Yes playlistmanager plugin does this and more, but ofcourse a real
server is needed as the limited one on the Touch itself does not run
any plugins

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Tone Controls for SB Touch?

2011-10-05 Thread autoformer

I ended up just getting a "3 band tone control" kit from a hi fi
supplier in Hong Kong. I'll build it up and put it in a little box and
that should work well enough.

My main listening systems are set up so that with well-recorded
material, no tone control is necessary. It's not really about the
quality of the system. Certain recordings are just poorly done and
require a bit of help. Why not have tone controls in your system with
a bypass when you don't need it, that's designed in such a way that it
doesn't compromise sound when bypassed? Removing tone controls seems
idiotic to me.

I agree My meridian system has tone controls :) the treble is in
reality a reincarnation of the "tilt" control that quad used to have
very good idea.

There is also the inguz plugin and brutefir but they may be overkill.
