Your router shouldn't make a difference.

If you are using mysqueezebox com:
Logon on to mysqueezebox.com and check the time settings there.

If you have installed software on the pc to play music off your hard
disk, please go to that PC and make sure it's time zone settings are
correct.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox Touch: WIFI or WIred that's my question?!?

2012-04-24 Thread albertone74

Hi everyone,
After 3 years I have decided to sell out my Squeezebox Duet and I have
bough a Squeezebox Touch which is connected to a Little Dot DAC. I use
IPengHD on my iPad to control my system. I have got Squeezebox server
installed on my laptop and all my FLAC files are installed on 1TB USB
external HDD. After reading several threads I am not sure wheter to keep
using the WIFI connection or start using a wired connection with a NAS
system like VortexBox. Now I apoologize if these questions have been
already raised but I would appreciate if you could help me out to
understand better:

1) What's better: WIFI or wired connection? Does the wired connection
(ethernet cable) really sound better the WIFI connection?
2) Is it better to use a NAS system (VortexBox to say) or a normal
PC/laptop with an external HDD.

Many thanks in advance for your kind help :)

Regards,

1) Unless there is some serious issues with your Wi-Fi, like
interference that would cause drop-outs, then I don't see any reason why
it would sound different.
2) That's up to personal preference. If you've already got a PC then
you don't need to spend money for a NAS, unless you want the central
storage and the ability to run LMS without a computer running, or want
to share data with other computers/devices on your network. But if what
you've already got works, you've got half the battle won.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] SB Touch won't display correct time

2012-04-24 Thread JohnSwenson

If you have LMS on a computer on your network the Touch will get it's
time from that computer, as long as you are connected to the server on
that computer.

A time issue can occur depending on how the time on the computer is set.
There are two ways time can be set on a computer:
time of the clock is set to GMT with an offset for your timezone OR the
hardware clock is set to local time and no offset is specified. In the
second case the Touch will take the hardware time and think its GMT and
apply the timezone offset, giving you the incorrect time.

It can also be an issue with daylight savings time.

You can easily check for these issues by seeing how far off the time is,
if it's off by the amount of your offset from GMT then it is probably
such an issue.

If it's its something completely off the wall then we will have to do a
little more debugging.

The best way to do that is to give us some more information:
What timezone are you in? How does the time on the Touch differ from
what it should be? Is the difference always the same?

Are you running LMS on a computer? If yes what operating system is it?
What is the hardware clock set to (you can get this from the BIOS)? What
is the OS timezone?

If you are running the Touch with a USB drive is it connected to the
internet through your network? Do you ever connect to MySB.com?

This information will help us try and track down what's going on.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Change IP address of the Touch?

2012-04-24 Thread Zombie

Hello!
I have a setup with a ReadyNAS Ultra with a fixed IP address, a SB
Touch connected with Ehternet to the NAS. I also use the Duet Controller
instead of the Touch remote.
When I connect new PCs to my network, they usually conflict with
each other or the SB addresses. That's why I moved the NAS to a fixed
address.
I see that the controller uses the same IP address as the Touch. Is
that normal?
I have looked in the Touch, but can't find a way to set a fixed IP
address?
Can anyone advise?
(I have cross-posted in the Duet forum, too. If I violated anything,

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Change IP address of the Touch?

2012-04-24 Thread aubuti

The SB Controller (SBC) and Touch are different network devices, and
therefore must have different IP addresses. So if they have the same IP
address, that's a problem for sure.

Just to rule out a possible source of the problem, you are using only
one router, right?

If you have only one router and you are routinely getting IP address
conflicts it sounds as if your router is poorly configured. Perhaps its
DHCP server is buggy, so the first thing you should do is check to see
if there is newer firmware for the router, and if there is, install it.
Normally there is a range of addresses that the router can use for DHCP
(dynamic addressing). If you set a static IP address on any device (eg,
your NAS), then you should specify an address _outside_ the DHCP range.

You can set a true static IP address on the Touch by logging into the
Touch remotely via ssh and creating/editing a file, but I think it's
better that you tackle the problem at the source, which appears to be
your router. Alternatively you may be able to change your router
settings to reserve a particular IP address for your touch (the
so-called "static DHCP").

EDIT: and +1 to Soulkeeper's post in this thread.

For the player itself, all it says is Squeezebox Touch
wifi is virgin media coming from virgin modem through netgear router.
my laptop picks this up fine.

everything says OK in the settings.

just something that may be of relevance. LMS said i needed to right

I recently set up a Touch during a kitchen rehab. Walls were moved/open
so it was easy to run a ethernet cable. But, I have been running over
WiFi as I have yet to take the time to terminate the Cat5 cable and hook
it up. It's been working flawlessly. LMS runs on a Vortexbox that has
a wired connection to the router. If you are considering a NAS and your
primary use is media storage, I highly recommend Vortexbox.

Some people contend that the wifi card in the Touch generates
interference and/or unnecessarily taxes the Touch's CPU, leading to
reduced sound quality. The evidence to back up these contentions is,
shall we say, sketchy and highly idiosyncratic. You could try
temporarily connecting your Touch via wired (ethernet) to see if you
hear any difference. Buy an extra long run of ethernet cable for the
test if you need to -- it will come in handy again at some point I bet.

If you are not getting dropouts at present, despite having two wireless
hops, then you should continue to be fine continuing as you are.

I'm not an expert on IR Blaster, I've tested it to make sure it works
but that is as far as I've gotten. If my understanding is correct raw
mode is very low level information on how the IR beam is modulated. But
this is a large sequence of information for each button. There are
several standards for how IR data is encoded, these allow you to have a
short set of characters to represent what gets sent. Most manufacturers
publish these encodings (or at least users have figured out what they
are), you can type these into the IRBlaster config file. Unfortunately I
think the learning feature of IR Blaster uses raw mode, it just records
exactly what's happening with the IR beam without figuring out what the
encoding is. So unfortunately you probably cannot just directly use
those learned "button pushes" with the Touch.

All is not lost though. If you can find out what the "codes" are for the
devices you wish to control, you can put THOSE into the config file and
it should work. There are several web sites that maintain massive
databases of such control codes, so the probability of finding them is
pretty high.

I believe this is due to insufficient data being buffered before
playback starts - which suggests a combination of high bitrate and a
constrained network bandwidth. Is this on a wired or wireless network?

I have discussed with Logitech, but at present I don't think they see
sufficient marketing demand for these features and they represent too
big a change for me to sneak them in as there would need to be more
testing of the new kernel. I think we need to organise some lobbying to
support the features as without this, I suspect it will stay as a third
party addition. I hope that multiple people using the new kernel can
help with pushing back on the testing concern.

I think your Touch is connected to your LMS server.

Just to prove that Tpuch plays the stream OK and avoiding any LMS
issues, I suggest

1. Make the following URL a mysqueezebox.com Favorite and give it a
unique name (e.g. Testing 6Music) so you won't mix it up with any other
existing favorite.
2. Make Touch connect to mysqueezebox.com using Touch
*Settings/Advanced/Networking/Switch to mysqueezebox.com*
3. Select the new favorite just created and play it.

Report what happens.

The Touch has a large buffer which it fills over the network connection
from the server. When you first start playing a song, or skip to a new
song it has to start filling that buffer from scratch. If your server
has a slow disk or the network connection is slow it can take a long
time to fill the buffer. In order to start playing the song right away
it only fills up the buffer a little bit and starts playing it. Then it
does things like send over the cover art and song information etc. THEN
it continues filling up the buffer. How much of the buffer to fill was
determined a long time ago based on a 44.1KHz sample rate, but with high
rate files that small initial part of the buffer can get emptied before
it starts sending audio data again.

Why does it only happen at the first song or a skip? When going from one
song to the next in a playlist the data for the next song is sent to the
player starting 10 seconds before the previous song ends. At that point
all the data has already been sent for that song and its just playing
out of the buffer, so the Touch "prefetches" the data for the next song
so the buffer is already full when it starts playing the next song.

One of the things that can exacerbate the issue is cover art. Try using
one of the now playing screens that does not show cover art and see if
the problem goes away. If you are running wifi try it wired and see if
that helps. It could also be the connection to the server. If the data
is on a NAS box and that is connected with wifi, that could be a
problem. A slow disk can also be the reason. Particularly a slow
external USB disk could be the cause.

I need to try this again - according to the imx35 reference manual there
is a divider which should be able to be programmed to change the clock
rate, but when I tried it didn't appear to work. I don't have access to
test gear to look at the lock rates coming out of the imx35 soc chip so
would be interested in trying some changes if other people can test the
impact on the clock outputs.

I would be interested in your reading of 46.4.2 of the processor
reference manual - (I think available from the freescale site) - do you
think changing the div2 stage would result in the right clocks?

It is over wifi, I also think it has something to do with the bandwith,
maybe there are more people who have the same problem? The SBT says it
has a 75% wifi strength.

What OS is your server running on - you could try tweeking the minimum
output buffer but this is harder to do on windows than other OSs.

I certainly have access to the I2S lines and can report the clock rates
that appear there given a test kernal.

I found the imx35 doc you mentioned. Can you point me toward a circuit

you could try a periodcount=4 and alsa buffer time of 10 us, this
means the frame size is 1/4 of the buffer size (1024/4096) instead of
1/2 (1024/2048) and also means the buffer refresh rate is .1s instead of
.02s or what ever buffer size you have, so you have a better chance of
filling the alsa buffer and you have longer time to do it. don't know
why this isn't the standard setting for the Touch as it gives a more
stable sound and may solve these hiccups.

I play 24/192 uncompressed flacs, wired and had problems if I tried
smaller alsa buffers.

Leema says the followng:

The product operates in asynchronous mode and supports all sample rates
from 32kHz to 192kHz via a high-speed USB interface. A driver is
supplied for use with Windows systems, MAC and Linux will work without
additional drivers.

And the dac will work n linux base systems.

Dmesg where can i find this ?
I can login in the sqeezebox...

This is tuning the alsa output buffer, but I think the problem is not
filling the 3M stream buffer before the decode stage fast enough /
starting before it is sufficiently full. Tuning the output buffer will
change the ms level performance (unless it is too small and you get
dropouts). This problem sounds like it needs to change the buffer fill
of the big buffers before this. There is some code in the sever to tell
the client to wait for more data at higher bit rate flacs, but it may
not be enough if the server can't deliver the stream fast enough.

When I rip with dBpower amp I embed at the time of encoding to flac.
But when I let vortexbox to the rip, I always have to go back in to fix
the art (and usually other things too) and that's REAL slow. So maybe
I'll start embedding in the mirrored mp3s only. Even if I do it disc by
disc it'll probably be faster.

I suppose when you embed ex post the operation takes a long time because
it is rewriting each and every file into which you are embedding album
art. With typical FLAC file sizes of 30-60MB that takes some time. And
if you're doing it over the network to the Vortexbox it takes even
longer.

Hi Triode,

Thanks for the wonderful tweak which make playing high-res files much
more better without the limitation of 24/96 via coaxial.

I did try the USB connection to my Antelope Eclipse 384 DAC, I choose
High Speed USB 2.0 in the DAC, when the Touch reboot it can only reach
the "Free Your Music" screen and stay there forever. If I changed the
settings in the Eclipse 384 to High Speed USB1.0, the Touch can
successfully reboot and start playing music, however the music is not
music but some strange noise. I'm not sure what went wrong.

By the way, Coaxial output has no problem.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch with USB drive : mastering TinySB

2012-04-24 Thread jean2

Hi,

I recently had a few troubles with TinyLMS. After tracking it down,
it was due to a corruption of the FAT filesystem. This confirm what I
said about backups in section (6), you can not fully trust those hard
drives.

1) Symptoms
-
The first thing I noticed is that I was not able to copy new files
to my Touch using rsync. After investigation on the Touch itself, I
realised that the disk was mounted read-only :
-
# mount
[...]
/dev/sda1 on /media/sda1 type vfat
(ro,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,allow_utime=17,codepage=cp437,iocharset=iso8859-1)
--
I did not think about it much, I just remounted the disk read-write
and copied my files.

Later one, I noticed is that on other SqueezeBoxes I would not get
all artwork.
On the SqueezeBox Touch being the server the player would not
connect to the server at all.
Also, the menu line for "Logitech Media Server" was no longer
available in the USB menu.
And SqueezeControlXL on my tablet would not work.

It started approximately just after I upgraded to 7.7.2, but that
could be a coincidence...

2) Debugging
-
The first thing was checking the kernel message logs on the Touch
itself :
-
# dmesg
[...]
CMD_RESP: cmd 0x801f error, result=0x1
FAT: Filesystem panic (dev sda1)
fat_bmap_cluster: request beyond EOF (i_pos 7659214134)
File system has been set read-only
-
Linux clearly complain that the FAT filesystem is not consistent,
and that was the reason the filesystem was read-only.

I removed the USB hard drive from the Touch and connected it to my
Linux PC for more extensive diagnostic. I know not many people use Linux
as their desktop, but similar tools are available under Windows...

My first concern was about the disk itself, if some sector became
bad or the disk is failing. Standard SMART diagnostics can usually
answer those questions. Under Windows, I tend to use the vendor SMART
utility. I checked the error logs, look for reallocated sectors, and
triggered a short selftest :
--
smartctl -l error /dev/sdg -d sat
smartctl -t short /dev/sdg -d sat
smartctl -c /dev/sdg -d sat
smartctl -l selftest /dev/sdg -d sat
--
Fortunately, the disk was fine.

Next level up is to check the filesystem. Under Windows, you can use
scandisk. The automatic pass told me about a corrupted file, I removed
it and I did a manual repair pass :
--
dosfsck -a -v /dev/sdg1
rm /media/TOSHIBA\ EXT/.Squeezebox/cache/artwork.db
dosfsck -r -v /dev/sdg1
--
As you can see, the artwork database was the file that was corrupted
at the FAT filesystem level.

Quick conclusion : the hard drive was fine. The FAT filesystem was
corrupted, either a bug in the Linux driver (quite unlikely) or the hard
drive was powered off or disconnected during a database update (more
likely).

3) Reconnecting

I reconnected the USB hard drive to the Touch. The Touch did the
usual scan for changes. The scanner did not find any new files so it did
not rescan for artwork.
I checked the system. The filesystem was mounted read-write properly
and the kernel message log did not had those bad messages.
On the other hand, I had lost all artwork and the server touch still
could not connect to itself. I suspect that the scanner did not rebuild
the artwork database and that was causing troubles.

At this point, I'm fairly confident that deleting the full database
would have brought me back to a fully functioning system. But I had
other plans...

Have fun...

Jean

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch with USB drive : mastering TinySB

2012-04-24 Thread jean2

Hi,

I decided to try the EXT3 filesystem on my Touch.

1) Rationale
---
The main reason for upgrading from FAT to EXT3 was corruption.
EXT3 is a journalled filesystem, so should be more robust to filesystem
corruption. I just had a FAT filesystem corruption.
I initially tought that keeping the hard drive as VFAT would make
it easier to use the drive. In practice, the drive is always connected
to the Touch, and I always update it over the network, so I don't need
this extra flexibility.
I was worried about the memory and performance impact of EXT3. VFAT
is fairly simple. EXT3 adds many features, but on the other had it's
been more optimised to Linux.
Lastly, I was hopping that going to EXT3 would solve some of the
rync issues that I had, like the non-synchronised timestamps.

2) Experience
-
I connected the hard drive to my Linux system. I changed the
partition type to Linux/83, and formatted as EXT3. I then copied all my
music to the new partition. That was around 10k files, more than 200GB,
it took a few hours.
I reconnected the hard drive to the Touch. Scanning took between 30
and 35 min for 8.5k tracks, which is maybe a touch slower than it was
with FAT (I've got a few more tracks since last full scan, and added
more tags).
Most things work as well as before, and the UI speed seem
unchanged.
Now rync does not need any workarounds :
---
rsync -avz --delete --progress --stats -i --perms --dry-run
--include="*/" --include="*.flac" --include="*.FLAC"
--include="albumartsmall.jpg" --exclude="*" ~music/Music-FLAC/
root@192.168.1.100:'sda1/Music-FLAC/'
---

On the other hand, I was stressing the system by running the VU
meters on the Touch being the server, and the OOM killed the TinyLMS
server due to running out of memory. But I think I've seen that before.
I guess I'll need more time to see if it's as stable as I would
like. I'll update in a few weeks...

Have fun...
