You can do it by hold touching an item so the context menu shows up and
then select the Rating sub menu and set the rating you want.
Via IR-remote you can access the context menu using +/More button.

Generally many NAS boxes have performance issues when LMS is running on
the NAS, to get decent performance you often have to select a more
expensive NAS model than you need. Due to this it's often better to get
an old slow computer to run LMS on if you won't want to run it on your
main computer. I personally have a NAS but I only store the music files
on the NAS and run LMS on a computer put away in a storage room where I
don't hear or see it.

Cut-Throat wrote:
LMS and Touch are such an important part of my Stereo System that I
would not like to go without them.

Does anyone have any new information on what the future of LMS is? Or is
there any other product in the market that would have the same
functionality of a Touch and LMS?

It's too early to worry about this as long as you don't have an urgent
need to enhance your system with new devices:
- LMS is still maintained on the same level as it was a year ago, the
only difference is that that Touch hardware is now longer sold in the
warehouses.
- mysqueezebox.com is still maintained on the same level as it was a
year ago, the only difference is that we are now unlikely to get
completely new online services added.
- There are at least two projects going with community members that
looks promising
-- CommunitySqueeze that intends to make an affordable hardware player
with top notch audio quality
-- ickStream Music Platform that intends to make a new platform for
music streaming which will ensure online streaming services will also
work in the future
- There are a lot of smaller projects also except for the above two

I'm personally not that worried about LMS, if Logitech would stop
maintaining it I'm sure someone from the community would pick it up and
continue the maintenance. LMS is really good as music server and there
are a lot of skilled people in this community, so I doubt it will die as
long as this community exists. There is no reason for the community to
maintain their own version of LMS as long as Logitech handles the
maintenance satisfactory.

I'll start worry about mysqueezebox.com the day it starts to break, but
hopefully ickStream is in place before that happens and fortunately
Spotify will work already today through LMS and Triode's third party
Spotify plugin.

To my knowledge, there is currently nothing else on the market that can
match Touch+LMS from a feature perspective. If you want an eco system
for the whole house, Sonos is probably closest, but as we know it also
has some limitations. If you want high-end audio and can't wait for
CommunitySqueeze, you should probably look at one of the streaming
devices produced by a HiFi manufacturers, but they are usually not that
feature rich and they usually don't have different types of devices to
make it work as an affordable whole house solution. A Wandboard or
Raspberry Pi together with a decent USB DAC is a good DIY solution for a
headless player at the moment if you want something that's Squeezebox
compatible, just be aware that some of the mysqueezebox.com provided
online services will not work on such devices.

Based on this, my advice would be to wait and enjoy your Touch+LMS as
long as it works and start looking for something else when it starts to
break.

If not, is there a link somewhere that tells me the steps I need to do

In general the procedure you describe is correct, you want to install
SqueezePlug on the Rasperry PI, the SqueezePlug wiki have fairly
detailed instructions how to do it:

After SqueezePlug is running on the PI and you have scanned the music,
you should be able to connect the Touch to it by browsing into the My

Option 2: Install a DHCP server on the Raspberry Pi and connect a

Option 3: Configure both to use a static IP and connect a network cable

Personally, I would selection option 1 if I wasn't familiar with Linux

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Newbie Needs Help - Touch VU meter

 Hi all,
I've just got my first Touch (having had a Classic for a few years) and
am wondering how i get/install better VU meters. I have searched the
forums and google and I like the look of the DarkMeter2 from
 http://unites.un.funpic.de/VU/

But, I am extremely confused as to how to install this on my Touch.

Can anyone give me an easy to follow step by step guide of how to
 install this VU meter.

There are two alternatives:

Alternative 1:
- On your Touch, install Patch Install through
Settings/Advanced/Applet Installer menu
- On your Touch, goto Settings/Advanced/Patch Installer menu and select
to install the VU meter you want

This will replace the default VU meter available on the Now Playing
screen to the one you selected.

Alternative 2:
- On your Touch, install License Manager and Custom Clock applet
through Settings/Advanced/Applet Installer menu
- On your Touch, goto Settings/Screen/Screensavers/Custom Clock
settings/ and select a free configuration slot and select one of the VU
meter styles
- On your Touch, goto Settings/Screen/Screensavers/When Playing/ and
select the Custom Clock configuration you setup in the previous step.

With alternative 2 you can run the VU meter as a screen saver or launch
it from the Extras/Custom Clock menu manually.
For alternative 2, you are also going to have to get a license for
Custom Clock. You can get a free 30-day evaluation license through
http://license.isaksson.info to try it out before purchasing. The
easiest way to view available licenses if you have LMS installed is to
install License Manager plugin through LMS Settings/Plugins and
show/purchase licenses through LMS Settings/Advanced/License Manager
settings page.

If you are happy with the current VU meter behavior and just want other
graphics, alternative 1 is probably the best option.
Alternative 2 is more oriented to people who like to customized it more
and for example adjust the textual information shown on the VU meter.

Agreed, unless you are a developer.

If you are a developer it's possible to customize the Touch a lot more
because we have access to all the source code, but this is of course not
easily accessible to normal users. Patches can be installed through
Patch Installer applet, but it relies on that a developer have published
a patch with the exact configuration values you want. As an example, I
know there are some patches for background color and text size but I
think they are related to the Controller and Radio and not the Touch.

license, if you are using several of my other plugins/applets it could
also be worth to consider the package prices to get all of them

You make the payment either from License Manager settings page in LMS

tried the Wiki and the info seems pretty thin and not updated.

For plugins, the only updated list is the Plugins tab in LMS Settings
page, just be sure to enable the checkbox so it shows all plugins and
not just the recommended ones which is the default.
There are plugin documentations on the wiki for individual plugins which
are fairly updated (for example mine) but the plugin lists on the wiki
is no longer updated so it's better to start looking in the Plugins
tab of LMS. On the Touch you also have the possibility to install third
party applets directly on the Touch, these are found in the
Settings/Advanced/Applet Installer menu directly on the Touch, they also
have a checkbox to show all applets by default it only shows recommended
applets.

For support documents/FAQ's, what we have is the unofficial information
on the wiki and the official information at
http://support.logitech.com/, I think this also have references to user
manuals.
Beta versions is available here

 2. After so many years of accumulation, my music library is getting
quite bloated with tens of thousands of tracks, most tracks were
converted to ALAC when I switched platforms, but some FLACs as well.
The initial scan took hours but after it is done I noticed that access
is so slow the Touch constantly times out trying to connect to the
 (Macboook Pro) LMS server.

Would using iTunes integration solve this problem? (I noticed that
iTunes seems quite happy with a crazy size library without much speed
 penalty.)

I don't think iTunes integration helps.
Are you running any third party plugins that might execute stuff in the
background causing problem ?
Feels strange that a Macbook Pro should have any performance issues
unless you have hundred thousands tracks or something similar.
There is some settings in LMS Settings/Advanced/Performance regarding
Database Memory Config and Server Priority which you could try to
experiment with to see if they make any difference.
Do you have a good network connection between the Macbook Pro and the
Touch ? If not, that could possibly explain some performance issues.

agentsmith wrote:

 3. Since I have FLAC files as well, can the server be configured to
support both iTunes and LMS native for FLAC files?

iTunes doesn't support FLAC, you can ask Apple for it but so far they
have refused to answer any requests in this direction.
Converting the FLAC's to ALAC is probably the only way you would be able
to make your whole library work in both iTunes and LMS.

I think LMS should scan both FLAC and ALAC files as long as you have
entered the music folder in LMS Settings, possibly you might have to
disable the iTunes integration but if I remember correctly it shouldn't
be necessary and it should work as long as you have a Music Folder
configured in LMS.

I try to use the Touch as a monitor for pager messages. The RSS server

So i don't mind that the client (SB Touch in this case) will query every
second. of at least every two seconds.

At the moment is restricted to 1 minute in the code, it's certainly
possible to change that but I want to analyze it a bit to see if it
would cause any other issues before I promise anything.

If you are familiar with development and want to do the changes
yourself, it's this part of the code in CustomClockApplet.lua that
handles the updates:

Code:

  elseif item.itemtype == rsstext or item.itemtype == rssicon then
  local url = _getString(item.url,default)
if forcedUpdate or (self.lastminute!=minute and minute %
_getNumber(item.refreshinterval,30) == 0) then

You just have to modify the if statement so it enters every time instead
of only once per minute or when the refreshinterval criteria as been
fulfilled.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Trackstat Technical Questions, moving to a new Computer system

Cut-Throat wrote:
I am helping someone setup a new computer and I need to make sure all of
his Music Libraries and TrackStat statistics move to the new machine.m
So I have a few questions.

1.) Where is the Actual statistics stored for TrackStat? IOW --- Are
they imbedded in the actual songtracks?
2.) Do I have to use the trackstat Backup and Restore procedures to move
 the statistics?
3.) Where are the Tracstat backup files stored?

 Thanks in Advance!

1. It's stored in the SBS/LMS database, in track_statistics and
track_history tables.
2. Using backup/restore is the recomendted way, but if music files are
stored on EXACTLY the same place on the new machine (same drive, same
folder) it should theoretically work to copy the complete Cache
directory (where the database is stored). You can find the location of
the cache folder in SBS/LMS Settings/Information.
3. Depends if the backup is done manually or if it's a scheduled
backup:
- Manual backups are stored in the file you have specified in
Backup/Restore/Clear section of TrackStat settings page in the Backup
file parameter
- Scheduled backups (if enabled) are stored in the directory you have
specified in the Backup/Restore/Clear section of TrackStat settings
page in the Backup dir parameter

Also, please note that if you move the music files to another location
on the new machine, it's very important that the Find alternative
files option is enabled in the Backup/Restore/Clear section of
TrackStat. This option can make the restore process very slow, but it
will be able to recover statistics even if the library has moved to a
new drive or a new main directory. If the option is not enabled, the
restore process will go a lot faster but it will not recover statistics
for files which have been moved to another drive or another main
directory.

Of course, if you have musicbrainz tags in all your music files,
TrackStat will recover the statistics independent of the above option.

Two things to remember:
1. When doing the restore, make sure you have done a rescan in SBS/LMS
first and waited for it to finish.
2. The restore operation is executed in the background, you will only
see in the server.log when it's finished. If the Find alternative
files option has been enabled and you have a really large library, the
restore operation can take several days on some setups. In a smaller
library, like my 4000 track library, it takes a few minutes maximum.

The process of doing backup/restored is described on the following wiki
page in the Upgrade/Reinstall section:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/TrackStat_plugin

Hard to say, but if you like to save time I would strongly recommend to
try to keep the files on the same drive letter and main folder so you
can run the restore with Find alternative files disabled. With Find
alternative files disabled it should be fairly fast, can't say an exact
time but I would be surprised if it took more than an hour, likely it
will go a lot faster.
If you need to run it with Find alternative files enabled it can
probably take more than a day to do the restore, maybe even longer

Cut-Throat wrote:

It's disabled by default, so in that case just do a manual backup as
described on the wiki on the old computer. When doing the manual backup,
remember that you need to specify the full path (not just the filename)
in the Backup file parameter. The backup is usually pretty fast, it's
the restore that can take a lot of time if Find alternative files are
enabled.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Trackstat Technical Questions, moving to a new Computer system

2012-07-06 Thread erland

Date is part of the file names in the scheduled backups.

For TrackStat data to be able to survive a restore, even with Find
alternative files enabled, it's important that the last part of the
file path is the same.

For example, if Find alternative files are enabled it will handle:
Old file: C:\Music\SomeAlbum\SomeTrack.flac
New file: E:\Music\SomeAlbum\SomeTrack.flac

And also:
Old file: C:\OldMusic\SomeAlbum\SomeTrack.flac
New file: C:\Music\SomeAlbum\SomeTrack.flac

But it will not handle:
Old file: C:\Music\SomeOldAlbum\SomeTrack.flac
New file: C:\Music\SomeAlbum\SomeTrack.flac

To handle the last case, the files must be tagged with musicbrainz
tags.
If there are a lot of cases like the last one, the best solution is
probably to do a backup, manually adjust the data in the backup file in
a text editor, restore the modified backup file. However, this can be a
lot of work if there are a lot of places that's changed, especially
since the data in the backup file is url encoded, so it's not that easy
to modify it manually unless you know what you are doing.

He has been using your plugin for about 5 months now.

As long as you haven't moved or renamed any files, TrackStat data will
always survive a full rescan, actually these days even standard SBS/LMS
ratings, playcounts and last played times will survive a full rescan.

If you have moved or renamed files, TrackStat data will only survive a
rescan if you have musicbrainz tags in the music files, else you have to
do a backup/restore.

So maybe he just hasn't moved or renamed any files, just added new ones
? In that case TrackStat data will always survive a full rescan.

core audience / loyal fan base a bone once in a while. (Triode doesn't
 count ^^)

I'm fairly sure the users posting on this forum is a minority of all
Squeezebox customers.
It's easy to think that Logitech are directly earning a lot of money
through the forum members on this forum, but in practice I think it's
time we realize that most of their Squeezebox revenues comes from the
mass market. Of course, some of those mass market users have got the
idea to buy a Squeezebox from one of the members of this forum.

I think we all agree with you regarding the above statement, it's just
that we can't do anything about it, except for providing the juicy
bones as third party developers :-)

Generally the issue with geek products is that a company can survive on
them for a certain time but after that they run out of geeks to sell
them to and have to either:
- Reach other kinds of customers - mass market - bigger volumes
- Reach other places in the world - global distribution - bigger
volumes

These are things that Logitech should be good at, unfortunately they
aren't good at software based product development and they managed to
get rid of more or less everyone from Slim Devices that had experience
with that, so that's the main reason why we are were where are today.
Fortunately there are still a few people remaining from Slim Devices
that really knows the products, so hopefully they still have the
strength to try to learn everybody else within Logitech. Still, if
someone from Logitech marketing would just try to understand the
products and do some advertisement and place them on the warehouse
shelves, I bet they could sell a lot more to mass market users than they
do today.

As a side note, the Logitech management/marketing people doesn't read
this forum, so there is no reason to try to reach them here. There is a
small chance they will read posts on the official forum at
http://forums.logitech.com but then they will read it because someone
from their support organization tells them to read it.

Custom firmware can be installed by connecting the Touch a LMS on a
computer where you have manually put the correct firmware files in the
Cache/updates directory. Unless I've missed something the kernel is
part of the firmware.

It's also possible to put firmware on a USB stick and insert in into the
Touch, it will then upgrade/downgrade to the firmware on the USB stick
when it boots.

On the Touch itself, it might be a good idea to backup the contents of
the /etc/squeezeplay and /etc/squeezecenter directores as they contain
all settings which you might want to restore.

I think the list of installed Apps might only be stored on
mysqueezebox.com, but I'm not completely sure. However, most/all? of the
apps are provided through mysqueezebox.com so if Logitech's servers
aren't available they aren't going to work anyway.

diego wrote:

What bothers me a bit is, that a factory reset does obviously only
revert settings and apps back to default, but not the firmware. So what
if a nightly firmware or an experimental Kernel messes up the touch, so
that the internal restore tool does not work anymore? How can the thing
 be reinstalled from scratch?

If I remember correctly there are some way which you can force different
kind of resets depending on how long you hold the reset button on the
back of the Touch, but I can't find the information at the moment,
thought it was somewhere on the wiki but I can't find it so if anybody
else knows where it is please let us know.

Of course, if the firmware mess it up really bad so the boot code
executed in the beginning of the startup doesn't work, then it's going
to be hard for you to correct it yourself. But as long as you only load
it with firmware provided by Logitech or Triode I wouldn't worry too
much about this as I know they tests these parts a lot to ensure it
doesn't cause these kind of issues. I'm not saying the firmware is bug
free, I'm just saying that the risk of it containing bugs that makes it
impossible to downgrade/upgrade to another firmware version is really
low.

diego wrote:

As far as I understand, this is simply a piece of gear made to live as

Which is basically the same as any other hardware from any other
manufacturer. BIOS upgrades for your computer, operating system upgrades
for your computer, firmware for your router is only updated as long as
the manufacturer supports it. My TV and Receiver comes with the firmware
they have from the factory and there is no easy way to upgrade it at
all. So the Squeezebox isn't much different than any other hardware in
this regard.

The only difference is that the Touch uses the mysqueezebox.com service
for a lot of its Apps functionality, and this would be lost if
mysqueezebox.com is shutdown.
If Logitech would shutdown mysqueezebox.com (which I'm sure they will
not do anytime soon), I trust they would still keep the firmware
available, at least for manual download and installation. All this
worries in the forum about Logitech completely shutting down
mysqueezebox.com is very premature, they simply can't do it as long as
they have devices which are within their warranty period, at least not
unless they can offer the customers an alternative solution.

The Touch with it's built-in server or with a LMS running on a computer
will continue to work for locally stored music without mysqueezebox.com,
the only issue is that the stuff in the My Apps menu is going to stop
working unless there is a third party plugin available that provides the
same functionality.

Mailing list, but yes. It isn't about the e-mail, though, not at all.
It's about being able to match a physical device (and its location) to
a person. They can track each (registered) Squeezebox sold, including
re-sales. They can black-list Squeezeboxes for whatever reason. They
can track what music you listen to, when and for how long. They know
what services you subscribe to. They can track what CDs you buy and
rip ... and sell all that data to ad companies. Sorry, but I do not
 want that.
Of course the local server could log all this data and phone home,
too. It doesn't, though, and even if it did, without the registration
the data remains anonymous. Mysb.com on the other hand collects all
that and more during normal operation, as a matter of course. Do they
sell any data? Probably not. Won't they ever? Noone can say.

All that, and I just don't like to be strong-armed into things.

I do understand your concerns, I'm just saying that you are tracked
anyway, so a mysqueezebox.com registration won't make it much worse than
it already is.
I would be much more concerned about what kind of information Google,
Microsoft, Apple and similar companies can store about your habits when
accessing Internet with your computer, tablet or phone. Without knowing
your habits, I'm pretty sure Logitech isn't your main problem regarding
privacy, I'm also pretty sure their privacy policy is pretty clear about
that they don't do most of the things you fear they do, especially not
without explicitly asking you for permission first.

If you only use mysqueezebox.com during initial setup, all they will be
able to collect are which device you own, where you are located and
connect that to your e-mail address. If you use a hotmail e-mail address
it doesn't really say them much. You can even register separate
mysqueezebox.com accounts with separate e-mails for each Squeezebox you
own if you prefer to get really anonymous.

However, it's your choice, as described previously in the thread it's
possible to get around it if you prefer that, it's just requires some
extra time and struggling so I would personally recommend you to accept
the mysqueezebox.com registration and after the initial setup connect
the Squeezebox to your local server and forget that mysqueezebox.com
exist.

I would actually pay for that.

It's somewhat possible to do with Custom Clock.

There is one available for Touch:
- The Cassetta Touch style:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/File:CustomClock_Cassetta.png

And there is one available for Radio:
- The Cassette style you can find on this wiki page:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Custom_Clock_styles

The Radio one can probably be customized to work with the Touch also if
needed.

The issue with retro 80's cassette table style is to find good graphics
which I'm allowed to redistribute, if you customize your own style using
Custom Clock Helper you can probably find some good graphics which you
are allowed to use for personal usage.

The main issue isn't the software, it's the fact that the hardware
hasn't been designed to run a big music server like SBS/LMS, and the
hardware is hard to change after the release.

Not unless you are willing to patch the lua firmware code. Would
probably be possible through patching, the skins are found in:
/usr/share/jive/applets/WQVGAlargeSkin/WQVGAlargeSkinApplet.lua
/usr/share/jive/applets/WQVGAsmallSkin/WQVGAsmallSkinApplet.lua

There are a number of lines starting with:

I'm guessing those are a good place to start.

where do I get this custom clock/VU meter??

There are two ways:

ALTERNATIVE 1: IF YOU WANT A REPLACEMENT FOR THE LOGITECH VU METER
- Install Patch Installer applet on your Touch by going to
Settings/Advanced/Applet Installer and select to install it
- After installation, goto Settings/Advanced/PatchInstaller and select
to install the VU meter you like.
- Some additional VU meters can also be found if you setup jstraw's
repository in SBS/LMS Settings/Plugins:

Code:

http://smallproblem.com/touchmeter/jstraws_squeezebox_touch_enhancements.xml

ALTERNATIVE 2: CONFIGURABLE VU METER USING CUSTOM CLOCK
- Install Custom Clock applet through Settings/Advanced/Applet
Installer
- Goto Settings/Screen/screensavers/Custom Clock Settings and configure
one of the slots to use one of the VU meter styles
- Goto Settings/Screen/Screensavers/When Playing and select Custom
Clock as screen saver when something is playing
- Install Custom Clock Helper plugin in SBS and re-configure the VU
meter style as you like so it suit your needs.

In alternative 2 you will also need License Manager applet through
Settings/Advanced/Applet Installer and purchase a valid license if you
want to use it on long term basis, you can get a free 30 day evaluation
license while you try it out. Install License Manager plugin in SBS
Settings/Plugin do do the actual purchase or apply for an evaluation
license.

If only Dynamic Playlist is installed, you will get access to the static
playlists you have and you can:
- Play them in the proper order
- Play them in random order by changing the setting Play songs in
saved playlists in random order in Dynamic Playlist settings page.

If you also install SQL Playlist plugin you will get the Random/For
selected option which allows to play different things in random order
without changing any settings, this can be playlists, genres, artists,
decades and similar things. Everything except for playlists requires
you to have the proper tags in your music files, this this is probably
the case already if you have ripped the music with a standard ripping
software.

Purchasing a license to SQL Playlist plugin will currently give you a
Dynamic Playlist plugin license for free in the package.

I don't have much personal experience of the built-in server in the
Touch but I know the memory available is very restricted and the
built-in server uses a significant amount if it's running.

I think Custom Clock might use some resources even if it's not active
if you have selected to replace the Now Playing menu with Custom Clock,
there is a setting for this in the Custom Clock settings menu.

If Custom Clock have been active since the last time you rebooted the
Touch there might also be some risk that it uses some resources even
though it's currently not visible on the screen. As long as the
built-in server in the Touch isn't used this shouldn't be an issue, but
with the built-in server active I wouldn't be surprised if it could push
it over the limit and cause crashes. But then again, I don't know this
for sure, I just know that another user had these kind of issues with
Custom Clock and built-in server combined. The issue is probably not in
Custom Clock, the issue is that the Touch memory is very limited so it
can't reliably run much else when the built-in server is used.

I'll try to find a procedure to reproduce the error every time the same

My Squeezebox Touch has the version 7.7.1r9558.

If it's related to number of tracks in the library or file sizes it
might be a case of the Touch running out of resources, the Custom Clock
version of the VU meters might use a bit more resources than the
standard VU meters (since they offer more flexibility) and maybe this
makes the built-in server crash because it runs out of memory or
something similar.

It could be that using the built-in server and Custom Clock pushes the
memory usage to the limit, the available memory on the Touch is pretty
restricted, so anything that uses a bit more memory will cause crashes
of the built-in server or even reboot the Touch. It's a lot more stable
using an external SBS/LMS on a computer, but I can understand why people
want to attach a USB drive directly to the Touch to avoid the need of
having a separate computer powered on.

2012-01-07 Thread erland

AAAlllrightyThen;682335 Wrote:
 I'VE FOUND THE ERROR PROCEDURE!!!

These are the conditions for the error to occur:
 -Screensaver must be turned on
-Screensaver must be a CustomClock style, which has to show a VU meter,
for example the first one called Analog VU Meter
-Screensaver delay does not matter, but 30 seconds is good for
 testing.
-USB device like a hard drive or usb stick with at least 1 song (mp3 or
 wav) connected.
-The internal Logitech Media Server must have been finished analyzing
 the usb content.

 Procedure goes like this:
You select a song from the usb device to play, and press the Now
Playing button (remote) until you see the original VU meter (The other
display options spectrum analyzer, art, art+text, onlytext won't cause
an error!). Now you have to wait until the screensaver starts and shows
you the CustomClock-VU Meter. Then press any button to make the
screensaver stop, for example the left arrow button (remote). And you
are looking again at the original VU meter. And now wait a second time
for the screensaver to start. And then when the screensaver starts
again, the USB connection will be lost.
If it didn't worked at the second time, let the screensaver stop and
start again a few times more. I think the connection will be lost by no
later than 5 times. With big wav files it can happen with 2 times, with
a little mp3 file it can happen after a few times more.

Ok, that confirms my suspicions from my previous post a few minutes
back, definitely sounds like a resource related issue.
My guess would be that the Custom Clock VU meters uses too much memory
to be usable together with the built-in server.

I'll try if I can reproduce it my own setup but I'm fairly sure it's
resource related based on what you describe and then I don't think
there is any easy way to solve it, at least not unless we have a memory
leak somewhere in the system.

Just to be sure, do you have a SBS/LMS installed on a computer or do
you only use the built-in server in the Squeezebox Touch ?

To be able to use Custom Clock while editing VU meter styles, you would
have to install SBS/LMS on a computer and connect the Touch to the
SBS/LMS in the computer while doing the VU meter editing. The reason
for this is that the editing requires a third party plugin Custom
Clock Helper to be installed in SBS/LMS and this is only possible if
it's running on a computer as the built-in server in the Touch doesn't
support third party plugins.

It will work to use the style without SBS/LMS on a computer, the
SBS/LMS on the computer is only needed during editing of the style.

I suspect your issue is related to the built-in server in the Touch
(assuming that's what you use), it's probably some bug in Custom Clock
since I haven't tested it a lot in this configuration (I have a LMS on
a computer in my own setup).

So you would possibly use this as a development toolbox and then
provide the patch entry for it in your XML file when you are satisfied

It might also work to just copy the file manually using scp instead of

Unfortunately Logitech never implemented the enhancement request

It could possibly be possible to implement as a third party applet that
copies the file and somehow trigger the Now Playing screen to reload the
VU meter image but I haven't investigated it further.

With a Custom Clock skin it would be possible to let it continuously
cycle between different VU meter styles every x seconds, but there is
no easy way to trigger the change with a button click. You can switch
style by navigating to the Extras or Settings menu with Custom Clock
but not with a single click while standing on the Now Playing screen.

I'm guessing you are talking about the menu text and in that case I
think the firmware needs to be patched, it can be done with a patch
through the Patch Installer plugin but it requires you to know which
firmware lua files to adjust to change the color to your liking.

Custom Clock can do it for its screen saver styles, but I suspect this
isn't what you are talking about ?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Software updates

2011-12-16 Thread erland

If your Touch is connected to a local Squeezebox Server running an
official release I don't think it should try to upgrade the firmware,
at least not as long as you have disabled automatic upgrades in
Squeezebox Server Settings.

In other scenarios it is possible to patch the firmware when logging in
via ssh if someone knows lua or is willing to learn.

The relevant code is in _upgradeSink method in:
/usr/share/jive/jive/slim/SlimServer.lua

I once did a patch that disabled minor upgrades, so this might be
something to be inspired by:
http://erlandapplets.googlecode.com/svn/PatchInstaller/trunk/patches/DisableNightlyFirmwares/DisableNightlyFirmwares-1.0.patch
(I later realized I could accomplish the same by disabling upgrades in
Squeezebox Server)

However, I never released this officially because it can cause major
issue for Logitech when people call Logitech support with issues that
are caused because of their Touch firmware not being compatible with
mysqueezebox.com.

Finally, don't try to do anything with the above information unless you
are somewhat familiar with lua, ssh and vi, it can potentially make the
device to not startup if you do something wrong when editing the files.

any similar applet or patch for the Touch?

Do you just want it to be black or do you want it to be darker ?

There is at least:
- Screen Switcher applet which allows to you configure different screen
savers for different time of the day
- Custom Clock which allows you to design your own clock screen saver,
for example one with a darker color of the text.

Both are commercial, so you will also need License Manager applet and a
license for them, but you can apply for a free 30 day license through
License Manager plugin in SBS to evaluate if it works as you like.

Lastly, from what I remember, they also delayed the initial release of
the Touch for many month, and during those months the beta tester were
saying that the player functionality was pretty much done and the bulk
of the work was on the internal server. If they did not intend to do
the internal server, why delay the release just for it instead of just
disabling the feature and shipping ? The player functionality of the
controller did not got such attention...

I believe they had printed built-in server on the boxes before the
initially planned release date. At that time I believe the hardware was
already shipped to the various Logitech warehouses and had to sit there
for many months until the stores were allowed to put it up on the
shelves when the software/firmware was finished. Due to this it wasn't
possible to do a release without a somewhat working built-in server
included.

Built-in server was planned when hardware beta testers was introduced
(December 2008), so it was planned a long time before any official
announcements (September 2009) were made and definitely a long time
before the official product release (April 2010).

However, I still agree with John, the hardware designers probably
didn't plan to run a memory and CPU consuming perl server on the
hardware when it was designed.

A lot of stuff can be tacked on as plugin much oficial stuff is plugins
 too, but anyway.

i use to think that the lack of development of core functionality is
mainly lack of dev resources ?

Any one with perl knowledge ? Are they boxed in by the Touch hardware.

They don't limit the core functionality based on the Touch. When they
did LMS they didn't even think of the Touch until the end when they
added an option to disable the photo/video functionality when executed
on the Touch.

So the lack of new core features is because of lack of developers and
priorities. The only scenario I can think of that might have affected
the computer based server is the switch from MySQL to SQLite, that
switch would probably not have happen if the Touch server wasn't
needed. Even though the developers sometimes defend it I think the main
reason for that switch was because they needed SQLite on the Touch and
it was too expensive to maintain and test two different database
backends.

Mnyb;676538 Wrote:

On the other hand is it only the chosen architechture as micro computer
running a real OS and a lot off stuff in script form lua or perl ?
for example TinySC on Touch has a playlist limit of 100 tracks an iPod
with ta fraction of the cpu a Touch has can handle playlist in 1
 track sizes ?
also PLC system with a fraction of the Touch CPU power runs large
industrial machines in real time ?
Are they using the most effective programming methods to utilize this
 hardware ?

This is the reason why the Touch server doesn't work, the architecture
and programming language is not optimized to run on slow hardware with
little memory. This is also the reason why the easiest/only realistic
way to fix the issue is to produce new hardware with faster CPU and
most importantly more memory. On slow hardware with little memory, you
need something that's fast and you need something that can dynamically
load/unload stuff depending on the current need, as I've understood
perl has issues in both these areas.

Looks a bit suspicions, there have been similar things happening
previously but then it has often only happened in one or two countries
but now it seems to be more wide spread. This all makes me think that I
really made the right decision when I purchased an extra Touch earlier
this week from my local store.

I guess there is a chance Logitech is about to release something new
that replaces it but there is also a chance they have decided to focus
on the cheaper Radio since that's likely a lot easier to sell to the
mass market compared to the Touch.

I haven't tried if they work but the process to install them is:
1. Make sure you have the repository configured in SBS
Settings/Plugins:

Code:

http://www.smallproblem.com/touchmeter/jstraws_squeezebox_touch_enhancements.xml

2. On your Touch, make sure you have Patch Installer installed, if it
isn't installed goto Settings/Advanced/Applet Installer and install
it.
3. On your Touch, goto Settings/Advanced/Patch Installer and install
the VU meter you like.

However, if you are using 7.6, you need to update the repository file
so it says maxTarget=7.6, else it won't show up on a Touch with 7.6
firmware.

 especially with a large library.

People with large libraries will be a lot better of using a separate
server, it's not worth struggling with the built-in server in the Touch
if you have a large library IMHO. The patch might help people which use
the USB port to connect USB sticks from friends since it makes them
accessible a bit faster than with the auto scanning enabled.

I'm guessing there is no search support unless you have done a complete
scan ? Would the system really be usable without search support in a
large library ?

IMHO, the built-in server on the Touch is a dead end, for it to work
reliably, we either need more powerful hardware or a completely
redesigned server software which uses a lot less resources. Among
these, my guess is that new powerful hardware is a more likely to
happen than a completely redesigned software.

 Touch firmware is 7.6.1 r9486

It relies on Squeezebox Server so you need to be connected to a
Squeezebox Server when using the Patch Installer, either the built-in
server in the Touch or a standalone server on a computer.

I've only tried it myself with a server on a computer, so there might
be some issues when used with the built-in server on the Touch.

However, I know it won't work with mysqueezebox.com, so that probably
explains why it doesn't work unless you have the USB device
connection.

But I've lately seen some mysqueezebox.com problem and the repository
files used by PatchInstaller is stored on mysqueezebox.com so if it
isn't available that might be the reason why you don't seen any
patches.

I believe it stores the database on the USB drive, so I don't think
this is possible. The reason is probably to save write cycles on the

Browsing is as fast as usual (about 330 files)

Scanning is enabled, SBS requires scanning, but with the patch enabled
it will only scan the directories you browse into and it will do the
scanning when browsing into the directory instead of when inserting the
USB drive. There is no way to avoid scanning in SBS, removing scanning
completely would be a major change, the intention with the patch was
just to disable to automatic scanning of the complete library.

nicolas75;656221 Wrote:
 Thanks for your help.
I must say I don't feel like tweaking TinySBS and would far prefer this
feature being part of standard TinySBS without installing a plugin.
With 22 votes, we can hope Logitech pay attention and fix TinySBS with
clear and user friendly messages, I doubt it is very complicated to
 do.
Anyway if I find some time to try that, I'll let you know.

I've added it as a patch in my Patch Installer, so anyone that wants
to try it can now install it by:
1. Install Patch Installer applet through Settings/Advanced/Applet
Installer
2. Goto Settings/Advanced/Patch Installer and select to install
Disable auto rescan patch

The result of this is:
- There will be no automatic scanning what so ever, so the only way to
get things into the normal Artists, Albums menus is by browsing the
My Music/Music Folder menu or playing tracks.
- There is no way to perform a scanning of the complete library, you
can only scan by browsing into a folder and in that case it will only
scan the tracks inside that folder. I'm not sure a full rescan can be
easily added as using the standard scanner will probably use too much
resources, I'm guessing this is a reason why Logitech wanted auto
rescan enabled by default.
- It's really slow, browsing into my main music library which contains
about 280 album folders takes about 30 seconds. Also, starting
Squeezebox Server takes at least 30 seconds.

So based on this, I'd say that there is no simple solution to get a
system with decent performance. The above might work better than it
does for me if you have a hierarchical folder structure and not a flat
structure like me, but I suspect most people are going to find the
performance too bad to be usable. It's of course still better than the
current auto scan enabled version which makes it impossible to use at
all for some users.

I think the only solution that would actually work would be to
implement a lua applet that played music only locally on the Touch,
with no support to stream music to other players and only supported
folder based browsing with no reading of tags and similar stuff.
Unfortunately this is something we can forget that Logitech will do and
it's something I'm not interested in personally, so it has to be done by
someone else that actually wants it and knows lua or is willing to learn
lua.

If so, could you try to login via ssh and open the
/etc/squeezecenter/prefs/server.prefs file and change the line:

autorescan: 0

Then restart the the Touch and see if this stops the automatic
scanning, if it does we can probably create an easily installed patch
or third party applet that does the same.

And change the line:
$defaults-{autorescan} = 1;

To:
$defaults-{autorescan} = 0;

And then restart.

I think changing /etc might work as long as you don't change the USB
drive but I think changing the USB drive re-writes the
/etc/squeezecenter/prefs/server.prefs file and overwrite the changes,
but changing the above SqueezeOS.pm file should avoid this.

If anyone tries this, let me know how it works, if it solves the issues
I'll make a patch or applet for it unless someone else feels up to the
task.

As my set up is all Ethernet based, I have no problem controlling the
Squeezebox from my computer, but I would find it a lot easier and
convenient to be able to control it from a decent remote when my
computer is closed. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems no Logitech
remote (even the most advanced and expensive Harmony remotes) can
display artwork except the Duet, but it seems like a lot of money to
pay for a remote that can't do anything else. I wouldn't mind buying a
Harmony remote if it controlled all of my devices AND could display
artwork and control the Squeezebox, but that doesn't seem to be the
 case (am I wrong?).

A Harmony remote will be able to control the Squeezebox and any other
IR remote based equipment but it won't be able to display the artwork.

simagu;651234 Wrote:

Currently, my Squeezebox is connected through a NAS with internet
access. Therefore, I am wondering if there is any possible way to
control the Squeezebox through an ipod with Internet access. I do have
Internet access, but it is not on the same network as my music. I have
PlugPlayer and the Squeezebox app installed, but have found no way do
this so far. The Squeezebox app merely says Choose Player without
providing any options. I know iPeng is very commonly used, but before I
purchase it I was wondering if it, or any other app, was capable of
being accessed from a different network.

So, if I understand you correctly, you have two networks:
- One with Touch and NAS
- Another one which offers WiFi access to the iPod

If this is the case, and you can't change them so they are on the same
network, I believe you need a solution that allows you to enter the IP
address of the local SBS. This is possible in iPeng but I don't think
it's possible in the Squeezebox app. It will probably also work with
PlugPlayer, as it allows you to manually add devices, but that will
require either SBS 7.7 (which contains the UPnP plugin) or the third
party Whitebear Media Server (which only works if you are running SBS
on a Windows computer).

Feels like the easiest solution is to just get iPeng, it's only $10,
I'm sure you spend similar amount of money on other things without
thinking much and you use these a lot less than you will be using
iPeng. To make iPeng work, you need to open the necessary ports in the
router, but I'm sure you are already aware of this.

Depending on your network layout and routers/WiFi access points, it
might also be possible to change the network so everything is on the
same network but that's hard to know without further details about your
networking equipment.

The Logitech Spotify Plugin has a known problem where unavailable

There is a version on the custom clock options but unfortunately this
 isn't the original one.

His patch repository seems to be down at the moment I've sent him a PM.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Playlists 'Not portable' like Music Library ?

2011-08-03 Thread erland

Does anyone know how playlist editors write relative paths in the
playlist files ?
Is it relative to main music folder ?
Is it relative to the playlist file ?
Is it relative to something else, in that case what ?

I'm just asking because if it's related it to something known by SBS it
feels like it should be fairly easy to add support playlists with
relative paths to SBS and we would get rid of all these questions.

Basically:
1. Check if the file exists at the full path
2. Check if the file exists at the relative path relative to where
playlist file is stored
3. Check if the file exists at the relative path relative to the main
music folder

Would something like that make it work for most playlists edited in
external software ?

I guess UNC paths vs local drive paths could also be an issue but
that's probably a bit more advanced to solve, I guess.

The developers are working a lot to solve the issues, it's a long time
since I saw as much bug fixing activities in the Squeezebox Server
source code as I've seen during the last 24 hours. I completely agree
that it's a bit ironic that they didn't do this before the release, but
I guess they had some good reason to release it before fixing all the
bugs.

The Logitech support staff, which is the people which should help users
with problem, are probably prioritizing all the people calling them and
helping these people with their issues.
The support staff neither read nor post in this community forum.
The support staff reads and sometimes posts in the official support
forum at: http://forums.logitech.com
But their top priority is probably to handle officially registered
support cases.

So if you want Logitech to see that you are having problems you need
to:
1. Post in their official support forum if you just want to inform them
but don't want their immediate assistance
OR
2. Register a real support case which will result in that you get help
from someone in their support staff to troubleshoot your specific
issue. You will find the Support link to register a support case at
the top of this page.

Due to this it's pointless to complain in this community forum because
the right people within Logitech won't get the message, you need to
make the support staff aware of the problem to improve the situation in
the future.

However, people who like help by people who really know the product and
are willing to do some troubleshooting themselves, are very welcome to
use the community forum and all community members will try to help as
good as we can.

Are you using the official 7.6.0 release or a nightly 7.6.1 build ?
If you are using the nightly 7.6.1 build that could be the problem
because there doesn't seem to be any 7.6.1 firmware directory available
at mysqueezebox.com so it might use firmware it has downloaded in your
old installation.

Try to delete any files in the updates directory in the Cache
folder and restart SBS and see if that solves it. You will find the
location of the Cache folder by looking in SBS Settings/Information.

 Very disappointed.

How do I go back to 7.5.5?

If you don't like to troubleshoot it together with community members
and want more direct support, I'd recommend contacting the official
Logitech support, you will find the Support link on the top of this
forum page.

If you want to revert to 7.5.5 it would be great if you before you do
that could post any server.log contents or contact support so Logitech
can fix any issue they might have missed in their own testing.

I'm not sure which way is safe path to go back to 7.5.5, but I suspect
it's a good idea to shutdown SBS and manually remove the contents of
the Cache directory and then install the 7.5.5 version again. You
will find the location of the cache directory in SBS
Settings/Information.

However, I'd strongly like to encourage you to try to provide some
information so Logitech can find the cause of the problem so it can be
fixed because eventually you are going to want to upgrade and your
specific issues might not be solved if Logitech isn't aware of the
cause.

If you are running SBS on a standard computer, the clean way to do an
initial rescan and try to get 7.6 work is the process described by
JJZolx here:

I think you should only need Internet during the initial setup, after

understood it correctly.

It was discussed a bit during the hardware beta testing where beta
testers were worried, but Logitech explained that you can set it up
where you have internet connection and after the initial configuration
you should be able to use it without internet.

I'm not sure if anyone have tested if it actually works, but maybe

just a place where the support staff looks for common problems that
needs to be fixed but I'm not sure they respond to end users very often
in the forum, at least not as long as they have other users who has
called them directly and are waiting in queue to get help. However,
they still read the information in the official support forum, in this
community forum they don't even read the posted problems, so it's
pointless to post here if you want Logitech to notice that you aren't
satisfied. That's why I recommend anyone with problem to at least post
your issue at the official support forum even if you give up and revert
to a previous SBS version.

So they have probably noticed that there is an issue even though they
haven't answered your post in the forum.

If you want to help them track it down you really need to contact the
support staff directly, but the issue with that is that it typically
requires some waiting and trying out different things, so it might feel
like a bit wasted time unless you feel it's urgent to get the problem

then server cannot be accessed and insists on upgrade to 7.5.4 which
will work once done. To go back to internet radio, MSB again insists
on upgrade to 7.6. It is a viscious circle. Fix?

I suspected this would be the next issue people would start to report.

I'm not sure there is an easy fix, you can refuse the downgrade/upgrade
when prompted for it by holding left arrow of IR remote for a few
seconds. However, I'm not sure the 7.5 firmware will work good towards
7.6 MySB and I'm not sure the 7.6 firmware will work good towards a
7.5.5 SBS. It might work, but I think there are some protocol changes
between 7.5 and 7.6, so it might also not work at all.

If you have the time, it would be great if you could post about these
problems also in the official support forum, so the Logitech support
staff gets aware of it and doesn't recommend all users to downgrade to
7.5.5 so they will get these issues instead. The official support forum
can be found here:

The Logitech support staff doesn't monitor this community forum, they
only read in the official support forum.

If so, I think you should be able to hold your finger down on a track
for a while, so it opens the context menu, and then select to show the
lyrics. The context menu can also be accessed with a IR remote by
hitting +/More button. I haven't tried this myself, so this option
might be missing on the Squeezebox Touch, but if it exists you will
reach them through the context menu opened for a track.

There is currently no way to get the Touch to automatically display the
lyrics for the currently playing track without user interaction.

If you have a iPad you can install iPeng for iPad on it and that app
has an option to show the lyrics for the currently playing track on the
iPad screen.

All solutions when attaching a drive directly to the Touch require
LYRICS tags in the music files. If you would be running a Squeezebox
Server on a computer, you would be able to use the third party Song
Info + Song Lyrics plugin to get them to retrieve Lyrics from the
online 'musiXmatch' (http://musixmatch.com) service, but neither that
will currently allow to to get automatically updated lyrics on the
Squeezebox Touch screen without user interaction.

I'm just asking because if you have a large library or high performance

If you want something reliable that just works out of the box, and is
