That entirely misses the point. There is little reason for a playlist
to use any significant resources unless the software doing it is poorly
designed. Looking at the comments in 'this bug'
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=10889) it looks like
playlist handing is a kluge that requires an entire rewrite.

Not when playing music natively supported by the system (FLAC, MP3 etc)
but maybe when transcoding files.
From
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Beginners_Guide_To_File_Formats:
Native or Transcoded?
In the SqueezeCenter/Squeezebox world, this can be an important
difference. The various models of Squeezebox can handle different file
types internally, so given (for example) an MP3 file can decode it into
music within the box. Other file types can't be handled within the
Squeezebox and are "transcoded", i.e. decoded in SqueezeCenter into
another format that the Squeezebox does know how to handle (see also:
Transcoding). SqueezeBox players natively handle the following
formats:

Lossless: AIFF, PCM, FLAC, WAV
Lossy: MP3, OGG and WMA (except WMA Lossless):
Some earlier models just MP3. See Hardware comparison.

Another significant difference for a Squeezebox is that you can
fast-forward or rewind with a format that can be played natively, but
not one that is being transcoded.

The ability to play from SD card or thumb drive is the only reason for
considering the Squeezebox Touch. The reason I never got a Roku
Soundbridge is because of their PC-centric view of digital music. I
thought Logitech had gotten home digital audio right, but I guess not.

Does anyone know if the iPod has a 100 song playlist limit, or
something similar? It's battery-operated and almost certainly has a
weaker CPU and less memory than the Squeezebox Touch. If the iPod
doesn't have such a limit, then that's proof positive that Logitech
screwed up their playlist handling. I'm a software developer and I
can't figure out how you'd design playlist handling in such a way that
a >100 song playlist puts a strain on system resources. It's just a
list! The actual playing of music should put a much greater strain on
system resources than a playlist.

You can do this with the Random Mix, which is controlled by genre. You
tick off which genres you want to include in the mix.

Yes, you can. But you'll have the same limit of no more than 100
tracks that can be in the current playlist when using the built-in
server.

Good idea. That's often recommended for anyone considering buying a
Squeezebox or for those who have one on the way.

What you also might do is put hopes of using the built-in server out of
your mind. It has numerous limitations and, before you've even touched
a Squeezebox, you've already run into one that doesn't fit how you like
to listen to your music.

Thanks for that info. I've never owned a Squeezebox before, and haven't
gotten a Touch (yet), so I don't know how it works. I read the
'documentation'
(http://www.logitech.com/assets/30072/documentation.pdf) but didn't see
non-playlist music-playing mentioned.

That's how my car's CD/MP3 player works. I would hope the Touch has

have a "Rock" folder, a "Hip hop" folder, a "Pop" folder, and an

Why do you need to "cover your music with playlists" ?

Music is browsable by

genre
artist
album
year

Or by Random Mix's like this:

Random songs
Random artists
Random albums
Random years

Here you can exclude genres you don't want in that mix.

Random mix is not like a regular playlist it gets filled in as you go
so more songs will be added to it as you go .

I'm not particularly fond of the playlist limit either, it's just
simple text file ? so I'm with you on that.

But it does not make the product impossible to use.

Have you encountered the '100 songs per playlist limit'
when playing from USB drive? With that ridiculous limit, it seems you
would need 480 playlists to cover all of your music.

I'm guessing you never upgraded your iTunes music to be DRM-free. When
did you buy your iTunes songs? You do realize that all older iTunes
songs are DRM-protected, right? That means nothing but iTunes and iPods
can play it. If you have DRM-protected iTunes music, you can upgrade to
non-DRM music for 30¢ per song. That 30¢ per song is actually a good
deal, because not only will your music be DRM-free, but it will also be
of higher audio quality. Old iTunes songs are 128-kbps AAC, while
non-DRM iTunes songs are 256-kbps AAC.

Many thanks for your feedback!!
I thought I was the only one having this problem so I called the
Logitech support in Germany and they said it was for sure a software
problem and that I should wait for the new version of the server.
I'll wait for the new version and if I still have the same problem,
I'll send the touch back.
I hope they are right and logitech can solve this bug with the new
version...

I only bought the Touch to use as a player with my existing server. I
was looking for an upgrade in sound quality over my SB3/Classic with an
eye toward eliminating the external DAC. The Touch accomplished that
goal for me so I'm happy with its performance in my system.

However, I have to say it is disappointing to read that, after a four
month release delay to get the built-in server working right, so many
people seem to be having problems with this feature. My external drive
never did finish a scan, even after 15 or 16 hours. It's a duplicate of
the server drive's internal music directory where all 48,000 songs do a
complete clear/recan in about 50 minutes.

It sounds like the odds of success improve if one gives the built-in
server 2 or 3 shots at the process. That doesn't strike me as very user
friendly or within any any reasonable expectations of a non-geek user.
It seems the built-in server becomes a real hit-or-miss as the size of
the external drive increases.

I hope that improves or I think a lot of people will be disappointed
with the product.

Brand new LaCie 500 gig mains powered USB HD 27000 tracks, initial scan
5.5 hours, crashed during artwork scan. Restarted server, this time
completed artwork scan, about 6.5 hours total. Playing an album or
random songs, usually the first track is ruined by stuttering -
restarting, but eventually settles down and plays ok until I try to
skip a track, this usually crashes the server, restarting the server,
DISCOVERING_DIRECTORY PROGRESS takes 20 mins.

Thinking there was a problem with the HD, I attached the Maxtor 500 gig
HD that I use for my PC Squeezebox server. Scan times similar to the
first HD, however after two crashes attempting to scan the artwork, I
gave it up.

I deleted loads of albums from the first HD, down to 14500 tracks.
Checked all tags with Mp3tag, checked all embedded artwork was below
150kb, with Tag&Rename. Mounted this squeaky clean drive on the Touch.
Scan took about 2 hours with no problems. (Remaining scan time is way
out, you can practically double whatever is displayed). Exactly same
problems with stuttering/crashing. DISCOVERING_DIRECTORY PROGRESS now
takes 11.5 minutes.

I bought the Touch with a view to this being the basis of my audio
set-up, however, using the inbuilt server has completely ruined the
Touch user experience for me. As it stands at the moment, I would not
recommend the Touch as a stand alone player/server.

I don't wish to knock this product, the Touch is amazing when used with
the SBS on my PC, thanks to all involved in it's development.

Well I don't think it actually works at the moment.
What I mean is that generating database files for the embedded server
could be an option available in next version of Squeezeserver.
Those files could be written directly on the usb disk, or "exported" on
the PC disk, so you can manually copy them to the usb disk.
I guess SQLite database structure is well known, and database files
easy to generate from whatever platform you use (a kind of
crossplatform software).

I think it should be possible and something I thought about back in
2008.

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=357706&postcount=46

I really think that given what we are seeing about performance with
scanning on the device itself that doing the 'pre-scan' on the PC is
going to be the best way forward for anyone with large collections.

This is most likely not going to work unless your PC is running Linux

Hello,

I still have my SB3, but I will probably buy a Touch soon.
I am bit puzzled by the scanning time you are talking about for direct
usb hard disk.
For similar music library, my laptop scan everything in a few minutes
with squeezeserver 7.5
I can understand this will be slower with the embedded server of the
Touch.
But we are talking about almost an hour scanning instead of a few
minutes ...

I usually rescan everything from scratch each time my music library
change.
It is fast enough (even with more than 400 CDs), and I am sure it is
clean.

Suggestion :
Would it be possible to have an option to generate the embedded server
database on the usb disk with a fast PC ?
So you can use it as it is when you plug the disk to the Touch and use
the embedded server ?

I'm having similar problems...
I have an 500 GB 2,5 external USB HD. Because the Squeezebox had some
problems recognizing the drive, I bought an AC self powered USB Hub to
solve the problem.
There are more or less 5 titles on the HD. It took 8 hours to scan
it. I thought that now everything should go faster, but no!
It takes a very long time to navigate through artists or albums (more
or less 7-10 sec) and when I choose a song, then it takes other 5-8 sec
to be started or added to the playlist.

I don't have this problem when accessing the same USB HD connected to
my PC via WLAN. I installed the server on it and run the scan. The
navigation is fast and starting a title takes no longer than 1 sec.

Is this normal? I thought if the Squeezebox Touch accesses the USB HD
directly it should be faster than via WLAN. For me it makes no sense.
That's why I think something should be wrong with my Squeezebox Touch.
What do you think? I am doing something wrong? Is it better to use a
3,5 external HD?

Many thanks for your help and comments in advance!

Nacho

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 2 USB drive questions for Touch

2010-04-11 Thread mlsstl

I let the USB drive run overnight and I don't think it ever did complete
a scan. However, it did play any music that I selected through the
folder directory (other than the iTunes material.)

I umounted the drive from the Touch and checked it on my linux PC and
it seems to be OK. I'm not sure what the story is about this. (A 2 GB
flash drive with a selection of music on it mounted in a couple of
minutes and seemed to behave as others indicated it should.)

I don't think I'm going to spend anymore time on this issue right now.
I'll just hang back and see what others experience over the next week
or two.

Yes a full scan of a large drive can take a long time. My tests showed
that a USB HD on the Touch is around 4-6 times slower than an internal
SATA drive is on a full blown PC. Part of that is the USB drive itself
and part is the slower processor.

So the full scan takes a long time. Once its done though things work
quite well, playing music does not use anywhere near full bandwidth of
most USB drives. You might see a slight difference in normal use on a
large library because some external USB drives have considerably slower
access times than those commonly used in desktop PCs. This might make a
difference in some situations.

The CPU and memory in the Touch are way slower than a typical server or
PC. That is a lot of songs. I've never tried that many during beta
testing, but I'm think that may be as expected.

The internal Touch server was not intended to replace a full blown
SqueezeBoxServer. It was designed for folks who didn't have a lot of
music, didn't want to setup a server.

40,000 songs is a lot of songs.

Even ten times as long as your real server would not be a surprize to me.

All IMHO,

Once you are done scanning, you don't have to replicate it often.

I think the initial design was for folks with a USB thumb drive to show
off a bit of music, or perhaps play music from an iPad or iPhone.

[SlimDevices: Touch] 2 USB drive questions for Touch

2010-04-10 Thread mlsstl

1) I plugged my USB drive into the Touch and the scan seems painfully
slow.

It will play music in the meantime, but I'm still not done after 3
hours. The drive has just shy of 48,000 songs. A rescan on my server is
about 45 to 50 minutes.

I'm just trying to find out what to expect.

2) It is playing most of my music just fine, but I'm get an "unable to
play file type" error message when it tries to play a M4A (iTunes)
song.

In looking at the Wiki page for the Touch, the chart indicates these
files should play. What do I need to do?

I plan on keeping my server running for 99% of my music listening, but
it'd be nice to take the Touch and a drive to someone else's house.
