Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] IR sensor ALMOST dead - any cure?

2020-10-10 Thread leinster-lad

FYI,
I decided to have a look at the power supply that was causing the old
"no remote control" issue on my touch.

Photos attached.
I removed the DC output lead and fitted to another 5v power supply that
I had lying around.
Once that was done and tested, I decided to check out the failed power
supply.

No signs of overheating etcbut

There are 3 electrolytic caps on the output; 2 x 1000 uf @ 10V and 1 x
470uf @ 10V

All 3 exhibit the old "swollen end" tell tale of failure.

I removed them from the board and tested with my cap tester.
Sure enough, all 3 have failed.

So this will be causing excessive ripple / noise on the output voltage
which appears to be at just the right frequency to swamp the IR diode
and circuit, causing the issue experienced.

Not sure if I can get the little plastic case back together, but would
be easy enough to reconstruct in a little jiffy box.

$2 in parts and it will be up and running again :)

2020-10-08 Thread leinster-lad

Stumbled across this tread while searching for a solution to my SBT
remote not working issue.

All set to pull it apart and replace the sensor when I thought i'd try a
new plug pack from a second SBT that I have just aquired (as suggested
in a couple of posts)

Well what do you know, it now works, good distance and not really
pointing it directly at the SBT ! (new plug pack into old SBT)

So I double blind tested.

Old plug pack into new SBT = no dice
New plug pack into new SBT = all good
New plug pack into old SBT = all good.
Old plug pack into old SBT = no dice.

tried the same test in two different rooms = same results.

Time to build me a couple of ripple/noise free linear power supplies !

If above steps fail, I would open the remote and clean the contacts with
rubbing alcohol, then apply contact paste.

This is exactly how my SoundBridge remote behaved in the kitchen, too

The fact that you press harder while brining it close to the SBT may
make you think you have IR failure.
Also, battery hoarding can result in this too:)

based on this thread highlighting the part number and location of the

My Touch stopped responding to IR input a year or so ago.
I assumed it was a dead IR receiver but thought I'd give a new power

Just hooked it up to a new IFI iPower and it worked like a charm.

I am also glad that I found this interesting thread about
non-working-IR-diode on the Squeezeboxes.
I have 7 of these in my house on various places and a couple of the Duet
and Touch.

After several of years of non-problematic use one of the Squeezeboxes
had stopped reacting on commands from the remote controller.
After reading through this thread I tested the problematic Squeezebox
with my lab power supply that has good current supply at 5 VDC and it
did not help.
I ordered a couple of the Vishay TSOP32238 from a French eBay seller:
'http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/172267599071' (Vishay TSOP32238)

Using my desoldering station it was still somewhat a hassle to desolder
to non-working IR-diode from the board. I think that it would have been
easier if I would have first just cut the 3 small legs and then desolder
the 2 bigger case legs.

Anyway, I soldered in the new IR-diode (without the casing) and tested
it with my initial PSU and voil! Remote control worked without any
problems at all and from all kinds of bad angles and long distance.

Thanks guys for the tip of using the TSOP32238. I did order some
TSOP32240 as well but they haven't arrived yet so I haven't been able to
test them but since the TSOP32238 seems to work fine I am happy. :D

Interesting. I've had lots of experience of kit dying that's very often
down to simply replacing the "wall wart" to get it going again. Also, as
they approach their end of life, the voltage often drops off slowly,
affecting different parts of the device over time, starting with those
parts that are obviously more sensitive to the voltage drop. I've found
that you can't tell if the PSU's duff by simply checking at it's plug,
as if usually will only show the low voltage when loaded.
When I get a chance I'll open up my Touch and measure the voltage
internally.

I just did mine after living with a dead sensor for a year and getting
inspiration from this thread. I used a Vishay TSOP32238 PHOTODIODE, IR
RECEIVER, 38KHZ, has the correct pinout. Getting the case apart was
easy, used a guitar plectrum to aid separation, didn't bother removing

removing the dead sensor, holes through the pcb are tiny, with hindsight
perhaps it might have been easier not to snip the sensor off or leave a
longer tail on to grab hold of.

You can use SSH to edit the network settings files directly , but that
requires an already working network interfaces ugh , if you edit them
and loose conection your S.O.L .

That's the reason for not be able to do it remotely . It must be
conected to the network how else to reach it if sometimes goes belly up
? Yes it has display you can do settings without it being conected
anywhere .
Does that display cable looks like it can be repaired :(
If you have to change the network settings you got one shot at doing it

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] IR sensor ALMOST dead - any cure?

2015-03-12 Thread paf

:)
Good news: I have replaced the original IR module in my SB Touch with a
new one and *now it works perfectly again*!

Technical information:

- the new IR module is a Vishay TSOP 34838, a cheap (1 USD) 38kHz
part. I'm not sure if 38 or 40kHz is best (Logitech writes 40kHz but
my oscilloscope says about 38...). I guess any IR module would work,
this one is just the one I could find easily
- the only problem with this module is that I had to cross the VCC and
GND pins. Versions with the right pinning are available, but I ordered
  the wrong one
- the module ist not in an metal case like the original one, it's just
  plastics
- the biggest difficulty was to remove the old IR module because of
the bad accessability and the fact that the metal case is soldered to
  the PCB
- to do that, I had to remove the PCB from the back of the case. I
didn't separate the cables between the PCB and the screen
- my oscilloscope shows that there are less perturbations at the
output of the new IR module than before, but there is still some. It
seems that it's not a problem

Thanks to all for your support!

These are the only pictures I've ever found of the inner life of the

http://diyparadise.com/blogs/2010/05/08/opened-up-the-squeezebox-touch/
There you'll also find instructions for how to open it up.

I have no Touch, but the IR sensor is probably the little module at
approximately top left on the first and second picture. Perhaps you
could verify this by looking for a suitable hole on the front panel.

I have no idea what the kind/make/model of the module is, though. You'll
probably have to open the Touch up and see for yourself, but obviously
there's no guarantee of finding a comprehensible marking anyway.

Good luck!

I asked the local Logitech office (here in Switzerland) and got the

- they don't repair or replace devices which are out of warrany
- they don't give any technical information (e.g. schematics) which

Do you actually need to use the remote? I find the LMS WebUI or the apps
for iOS and Android to be superior.
An alternative to the SB Touch with a big display would be an iPad with
iPeng or SqueezePad, with the in-app purchase of playback. No IR, of
course, but you can use the iOS or Android apps to control it.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] IR sensor ALMOST dead - any cure?

2015-02-25 Thread fcm4711

Hi guys

I can confirm that the IR sensor is at the top left corner of SB Touch
as Gandhi already suspected. From what I can tell it's the same /
similar little module that was used in SliMP3, Squeezebox 1 and 2, SB
Classic, SB Boom, Transporter, SB Radio and Smart Radio too. The module
itself only filters out the IR carrier which is around 38kHz.

If you have ruled out other sources that might interfere with IR like
neon lights, TV sets, etc. I probably would take SB Touch apart and try
IR without the front cover to see if maybe the front cover somehow is
diminishing the IR signal. (Some dust maybe or some other deposit on the
plastic.)

After that I would try to replace the IR module with a similar one. They
all seem to have the same pinout.
Pin 1 = IR out
Pin 2 = VCC
Pin 3 = GND

IR sensors can fail but they are generally very reliable so it's worth
ruling out other possibilities before giving up on them.
If you haven't already I would test it in a dark room, there are some
light sources, including flat panel TVs, that are known to interfere
with IR signals.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] IR sensor ALMOST dead - any cure?

2015-02-22 Thread DonOregano

I've got the same problem with two Touches! Very annoying...
I've been thinking about doing some soldering and replacing the ir
sensor, but I'd prefer to hear from someone who's successfully done this
before I try it myself.

Are you sure that nothing else in the room ( like an or extender) isn't
also sending IR. If it is then the touch is being flooded and will not
pick up the remote correctly. I'd be surprised if it's the sensor. I
once had an extender (blaster) where interference was causing it to be
on low transmit all the time

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] IR sensor ALMOST dead - any cure?

2015-02-22 Thread paf

Hello

I have tried all possible resets and power-offs. There is no IR sender
which could perturbate in the room.

The problem looks like the value of some components drifting somewhere
between the sensor (diode?), filtering circuitry (is there any?) and
decoding chip.

The minimum to have a small chance of finding the problem would be to
have the electric schematics of this part of the circuitry of the
Touch.

== anybody knows where I can find the schematics?

Regards
Patrick

... there are many devices whose schematics are not published
officially, but still available on the internet...

After all, Logitech has destroyed the SqueezeBox line, so they could at
least publish the schematics... if they want to sell something again to
their frustrated SB customers like me.

I'm not far from telling never again Logitech after the SB
experience.

2015-02-21 Thread Fizbin

Have you tried the simple things? Like unplugging the SBT for awhile
(overnight), and try the reset procedure by pressing the little button
at the back, for around 15 seconds. You can also perform a factory reset
from the Settings Advanced menu.

[SlimDevices: Touch] IR sensor ALMOST dead - any cure?

2015-02-21 Thread paf

Hello

After 5 years of faithful service, my Squeezebox Touch has developed a
problem.

-The IR remote control only works when i hold the remote very near to
the Touch, and it seems to become worse every day-.

As the problem happens with several remotes (two original SB remotes and
a Harmony 785), -it must be on the side of the Touch-.

Does anybody know this problem already or any solution? As an electrical
engineer, I'm not afraid of opening my Touch and soldering, but with
such a partial malfunction, no schematics and no advice, there is not
much place for hope!

Thanks and regards
Patrick
