[UV] How much do you pay for support each year?

2004-02-19 Thread jimmay h
Our VAR just sent our UniVerse support bill for next year. We are running
UniVerse 10.0.0.1 on Windows 2000 Sever.
It is $72/user license. With 60 licenses, that is $4320, plus the windows
support at 865.00.

We used them for some support over the year, but mostly it was related to
their installation of UV on the server prior to shipping it to us. We're
located on the west coast and their support was in the east coast of the US.
So, sometimes their support was slow in responding.

They are not our software vendor, they just sold us the server and UniVerse.

What are my options?
Can we purchase support directly from IBM?
Any ideas?

I think Charlie is write to point out that dogmatism on any matter is

posting that I normally adhere to. But, I agree with Charlie that there are
times when top-posting seems the best way to communicate.

Now, here's the nub of the matter IMHO. Frankly I don't care if people top-
or bottom- or inter- post, but I find it highly annoying when posters can't
be bothered to trim what they are quoting.

Below are some examples I've seen here recently. Note that the person being
quoted is rarely at fault here, it is usually the quoter, not the quotee.

I particularly dislike it when people quote Microsoft's entire attribution

Well, if that is the case Jerry, and I realise you'll have binned this
before reaching this point, you should understand how frustrating it is for
the rest of us.

There are options in Outlook under E-Mail Options where you can specify not
to include the original text in any reply. PLEASE, if you aren't going to
trim the context, use that option, and simply post your reply standalone.

Alternatively, there are two good freeware tools you can use which let you
fix up the way OE and Outlook do quoting and attributions automatically -
sadly though, they'll only do it on the way out, they won't fix stuff other
people send you!

Double-byte on UD question

2004-02-19 Thread Bruce Lunt
Hi All,

I am researching the possibility of whether our application system, written
in SB+ running on Unidata on HPUX on HP9000, can be "enhanced" with
double-byte characters so that we could use Chinese characters in our Taiwan
location. Is it possible? If it is not possible with the current
configuration could it work if we moved to Windows? Or Linux? Or maybe some
sort of screen-scraper VB application?

I was hoping that somewhere out there this has already been addressed
successfully.

Thanks in advance for any help that is provided.

Avoid using AIX extended shared memory with large UniData sites

2004-02-19 Thread Wally Terhune

Ken Wallis wrote (different thread):
With decent tuning you should be able to find a reasonable compromise
between making lots of memory available for big jobs without lumbering
little jobs with a huge footprint. Even on AIX now there are some extended
shared memory facilities which allow you to have more segments instead of
just making them all huge! I can't remember the exact details but EXTSHM
rings a bell.
__

My comment:
Due to the way UniData uses shared memory (eg - all udt processes have to
attach the smm - ctl (global control table) segment) and the way AIX
implemented extended shared memory (memory mapped files), there can be
performance issues (contention for access to a single segment). This was
identified at a site running 12-1500 users, but I imagine it would raise
its ugly head at smaller sites as well. In spite of suggesting this when I
originally wrote a white paper on UniData and AIX, we no longer recommend
implementing it.

There is a setting in UniVerse somewhere that tells it whether or not to use
DOMAIN/username or just username.

IIRC there is a registery setting in Windows for this. Have a look at the
readme file for the version you have it's mentioned there.

It is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Informix > UniVerse > CurrentVersion

Then you will probably need to created a new DWORD value with the name
UseShortUserNames.

But it does mean you can no longer use the mesage command to all users in
the local domain because that name is no longer there.

By the time the problems with 10.0.15 were made public, we had had it on our
development system for five or six weeks, and in production for a fortnight.
Since the production upgrade from UV9.6 had also been a platform change from
HP-UX to Win2K3, we couldn't go back to anything, and 10.0.17 was then not
yet available. We were stuck on 10.0.15 :-(
Fortunately we have not had any of the problems some others have experienced
with this release, but we are eagerly looking forward to 10.1!

and someone said UV 10.0.15 was something that should have never made it
out to the field. Maybe someone out there will know whether the version
is connected to your error message or whether a UV upgrade would fix the
problem.

Ron,
We currently have 4 customers running on Win 2k3 with UniVerse 10.0.17 and

not had any issues related specifically to the OS or new UV. That is to

Thanks for this, Tom

Do you know if the 48MB limit has been increased in Windows 2003 Server?

What would you think is the practical ceiling on the number of Telnet users
caused by this 48MB limit - assume a UV server not used for anything else?

Thanks

RE: UniVerse and Backup Exec

2004-02-19 Thread Tom Firl
> Dennis also mentioned a registry tweak. I'm guessing that
> possibly this is contained in the tech tip that Steve posted.

I didn't catch the nature of the errors, but the registry tweak may have to do with
the Windows SharedSection parameter that relates to telnet service.

Users that connect via telnet attach to a non-interactive desktop in Windows. Each
user requires some desktop heap -- a finite resource. You can set the amount of
desktop heap allocated to non-interactive desktop by tweaking the SharedSection
parameter for Windows.

The Windows SharedSection parameter is found in the registry at
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurentControlSet/Control/SessionManager/SubSystem/Windows"

The DWORD value for the Windows key will look something like this:
"%SystemRoot%\system32\csrss.exe ObjectDirectory= \Windows SharedSection=1024,3072,512
Windows=On SubSystemType=Windows
ServerDll=basesrv,1ServerDll=winsrv:UserServerDllInitializat
ion,3ServerDll=winsrv:ConServerDllInitialization,2
ProfileControl=OffMaxRequestThreads=16"

The SharedSection ,, string is the parameter of interest. The values of
, , and are defined as follows:

is the size of the system heap in kbytes

 - is the size of the interactive desktop heap in kbytes -- that is, each desktop
that is created is allocated an amount of kbytes of heap space.

 - is the size of the non-interactive desktop heap in kbytes -- again, each
non-interactive desktop that is created is allocated an amount of kbytes of heap
space.

The non-interactive heap setting -- -- is the one that affect telnet. The default
setting of when the OS is installed is blank. The default value when is
blank is 3072.

Note, on a system-wide basis there is a finite limit of 48MB of shared heap space.

When B/E is installed, the value of is set to 512. This reduces the size of the
heap for each non-interactive desktop that is created -- including the non-interactive
desktop used by the UV Telnet service. The smaller the heap space of the
non-interactive desktop for the UV telnet service, the fewer the number of connections
that the service will support.

I would expect that if limited heap space is causing the errors in the registry, you
would also be having some problems getting users connected, or having users abnormally
disconnected.

If this is the case, you might increase the size of the heap space allocated to
non-interactive desktops () to a value of 1024. You will need to reboot the
system after making the change in order for them to be effective.

Note, because there is a finite limit of system-wide heap space, increasing the values
of and can cause other problems (such are some services not starting). How
much system-wide heap space that is used is determined by the applications that create
desktops and the size of those desktop. Typically, non-interactive desktops are
created by services and an interactive desktop created for the console user.

Note, the finite heap space limit of 48MB is a BIG reason why it is difficult to
achieve high levels of user scalability for "terminal server-like" applications (such
as some of the green screen software that runs on Universe and jBASE) on Windows
servers.

Hi Gwen

We're running UniVerse 10.0.4 (a known baddie as it is) and
Backup Exec,
tho' which I don't know off hand. We also get plenty app
errors

We've had 47 system crashes sinces Aug '03, which IBM have
first blamed
on Backup Exec, then told us "that 10.1 would fix it"
thereby admitting
the problem lay in UV.

When pressed to supply us 10.1 to fix the problem, the
answer was that
we'd have to wait for 10.1.1 as that was specific for "our
platform"

We originally thought the problem might lie in the way the
system (incl
W2K) had been loaded, and so re-installed W2K Server, then
Backup Exec,
then used that to restore the system. Didn't work.

We're still running B/E on the UV server, the system crashed
twice
yesterday, and once today, and management still doesn't see
the need to
change servers / UV's just yet.

One thing tho' we did do when tweaking the reloaded
UniVerse - we
modified a registry key that some bright spark had
discovered helped B/E
and UV to co-exist. What that tweak is I don't remember -
but I know
that the guy who does is also on this list - Kurt, please
supply!

Something else that IBM said might fix the problem was if we
installed
B/E on a different server and backed up over the network...

QUOTING NAG

Please refrain from quoting all of a message when replying to one or
more points in it.

The general guideline of netiquette when replying to messages is that
you should quote only about four lines of the *most recent* post for
each point to which you are responding. If you are replying to several
points, do not top-post. Quote four or five lines, add your point, quote
some more, add your point, etc.

And quoting an entire thread is always inappropriate in a discussion
list or newsgroup.

Your assistance is reducing the data smog is appreciated.

Well, Ray has spoken, so I guess that makes it gospel. Top posting is
"wrong-posting", and only newbies who don't know any better do it. Speak for
yourself, Ray - I, and many others, would rather not have to scroll down in
each post
to see the new material. I want to see it at the top, and scroll down if I
need to refresh my memory as to the context. I am not a newby - I've been in
the
computer business for 26 years, and on the internet about as long as there
was
one (BBSs before that - top posting was quite common then, too).
I do agree that the poster should trim out non-relevant material from prior
posts, though.

Without interposting, you have no idea where the reply

through an entire thread, when it's essentially dead, and don't mind
the occasional reply that's out of place because somebody has their
clock out of sync, or the time zone set incorrectly, then that's fine
for you. But top-posting still makes things more difficult for just
about everybody else.
The byte flow problem, is the one that directly affects Cliff and the
digests. Unfortunately, 99.% of Top-Posters neglect to trim the
quoted message to the relevant material. That wastes huge amounts of
bandwidth.

There really are no valid reasons to top-post, but there are plenty
of valid reasons to inter-post and trim the quoted material. That's
why it's been a flameable action on Usenet for over twenty years.
Top-posting has only become more common in recent years because OE
and a few other email/newsreader hybrids (that really don't do either
well) make it tough to reply correctly and newbies are showing up
everyday, not just in the first couple of weeks in September.
Insisting on top-posting and not trimming the quoted material,
especially when there's replies that have already been right-posted

RE: UniVerse and Backup Exec

2004-02-19 Thread Gwen Buck

First of all, thanks to all who have replied to my post! I'm attempting
to combine all replies in this one e-mail.

A couple people mentioned alternate backup methods. One was to do a
uvbackup and run Backup Exec and the other was to backup remotely.
Since IBM does not want Backup Exec to exist on my server, the remote
backup might be a solution. IBM suggested this but that presents some
bridges that I don't want to cross if I don't have to.

After reading Dennis' post I'm counting my blessing that my server is
not crashing. I am losing some RF users, however, and I have been
wondering if that problem was somehow related. For now, I have put a
logout program in place to resolve the dead user the next time the RF
user logs on. We did have a crash problem when on NT 4.0. Vmark (I
think...or maybe Ardent) had us remove ArcServe and use NTBackup and
that resolved the problem.

Dennis also mentioned a registry tweak. I'm guessing that possibly this
is contained in the tech tip that Steve posted. My tech support is
through Epicor so I will press them a little more on whether/how this
tip applies to Win2K.

Mark mentioned that we should use an OFM (open file manager) with Backup
Exec. We use the "Advanced Open File Option" which is a companion
product for Backup Exec.

Wol (Anthony?) asked if I'm backing up the UV account. I am not. I'm
just backing up user accounts and some additional shared databases that
exist on the same drive. The whole backup takes less than 45 minutes as
compared to about 6 hours on my old server.

I appreciate all the help everyone has offered. I now have some new
avenues to explore!

Thank you!

RE: UniVerse and Backup Exec

2004-02-19 Thread Anthony Youngman
Are you backing up just a user-accounts partition, or are you backing up
the UV account itself, too?

We had an issue with backup software (I think it was BackupExec) and
backing up the UV account. If the NT client code is the same as the nix
code (ported from nix) that could be your problem ...

When our backup software built up a list of files to be copied to tape,
among other directories, it picked up the global catalog, which has
loads of files whose name begins with "*" ... OOPS !!!

This list got reglobbed ... and the asterisks were treated as wildcards
... I can't remember what happened, but I can well imagine a recursive
file expansion causing the system to OOMplode ... (Out Of Memory).

And don't say "this is NT" - there are more than enough cases of nix
software being modified "just enough" to run on NT and suffering the
same problems as running native nix. I'm not saying this definitely IS
such an instance, but it could well be ...

Cheers,
Wol

Subject: UniVerse and Backup Exec

Gwen,

We found the following Techtip (#1299) from Epicor to help with Backup Exec
and Universe.

It has to do with a registry setting to allow Universe and Backup Exec
to play nice on a Windows NT server, the same setting might work for a
Windows 2000
Server. I don't know if it will help with your problem or not.

Let me know off list how you like running Universe 10 and Windows 2000, we
are planning
the same upgrade later this year.

(3) There is a problem logging in users to UniData or UniVerse
up to
the fully licensed limit.
(4) Telnet sessions start dropping off when you get close to the

user limit:
(5) Unidata admin on the server shows that the user session is
still
ongoing and has to be killed manually
(6) TNET.DLL failed to initialize
(7) TNET CLIENT/SITE licensing setup failed

Cause:

Services consume a small amount of memory each time they are
started. When multiple services log on as the same account the
system may not have enough memory to create a new desktop heap
(pre-allocated memory) for the service being started. Microsoft
has
confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 4.0.
UniData
and UniVerse are then unable to allocate memory for new
sessions.

Background:

This problem was brought to our attention on systems running
Seagate
Backup Software. Seagate makes a change to a registry setting to
get
around User32.dll errors in Windows NT (per Seagate's attached
Tech
Note). Seagate obtained this information from Microsoft's
Knowledge
Base Article Q142676 (also attached). Ardent tech support
believes
that Microsoft's solution causes Kernal32.dll errors on servers
running UniData and/or UniVerse, so they recommend a different
solution.
The poor RDBMS performance and low number of users allowed to
login
is due to an insufficiently sized non-interactive heap.
Increasing
this setting has resulted in noticeably improved server
performance.

Solution:

The following solutions should be tried one at a time. After
each
fix, check the server to see if the problem has been corrected.
It
is strongly recommended to NOT apply every step at one time.
Make
only the minimum changes necessary to correct the problem.
Excessive
registry modifications may cause conflicts in other areas that
will
be very difficult to troubleshoot.

(1). Check the virtual memory setting, located in START |
Settings |
Control Panel | System. This opens the "System Properties"
applet.
Select the "Performance" tab. The Virtual Memory setting is
displayed and can be changed from here.

(2). Open the following registry key using REGEDIT or REGEDT32.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurentControlSet/Control/SessionManager/SubSystem/
Windows

The entire string will be similar to:
%SystemRoot%\system32\csrss.exe ObjectDirectory=\Windows
SharedSection=1024,3072 Windows=On SubSystemType=Windows
ServerDll=basesrv,1
ServerDll=winsrv:UserServerDllInitialization,3
ServerDll=winsrv:ConServerDllInitialization,2 ProfileControl=Off

MaxRequestThreads=16

Look for the sub-string: SharedSection=XXX,YYY,ZZZ

XXX - is the size of the global heap in kilobytes.
YYY- is the size of the interactive desktop (system wide) heap
in
kilobytes.
ZZZ- is the size of the non-interactive (hidden) desktop heap in

kilo

Sorry, I missed the original post...but for what it's worth - we also run
UV10.0.4 on W2k and use Backup Exec with no problems. Only comment is you
should install an OFM (open file manager), we use St. Bernard.

Good luck, Mark.

RE: UniVerse and Backup Exec

2004-02-19 Thread Dennis Bartlett

There are a number of subroutines which need to be globally cataloged
on the
UniData server for VSG to work properly. SCHEMA_ATTRIBUTE_MAP is one
of
them and it doesn't seem to be cataloged on your box.

You'll probably find the compiled object on the machine somewhere under
the
UniData bin directory - where it is loaded off tape or CD on install.
Copy
anything that starts with SCHEMA_ that you find into the 's'
subdirectory of
the global catalog CTLG directory and then try again with VSG.

Ken

why it's been a flameable action on Usenet for over twenty years.
(aka inter-posted), I hate to say it, is just plain rude and self
serving. Please take a moment and read the material listed in the
two links previously provided. If you missed them, here they are
again:

RE: version control software

2004-02-19 Thread Brian Leach
Jeff,

We use a two pronged attack - I don't think I can share it (sorry) but here
is what it does - none of it should be too difficult to emulate:

First we have some BASIC routines that stamp our programs with a string in
the format:

ADGVERDATA='Version=x;'
ADGVERDATA:= 'VerDate=xx;'
ADGVERDATA:='VerHist=xx'
etc.

The format of the string means that we can search both source and object
code for version stamps (being a variable assignment not a comment they get
compiled into the object code string table). We have some simple subroutines
that return this version information which we can use e.g. from
I-Descriptors to list the versions and from setup routines to check
versions; and we have wrappers around our installation routines and checks
in the routine we use for any global cataloging to ensure that we don't
accidentally catalog an older routine over a newer version.

Secondly, we use RCS for delta-ing (we could use CVS but RCS was a simpler
option for interfacing). To allow it to handle non-source items (eg
dictionaries and parameter records) we wrapper the RCS routines (ci and co)
through some routines that essentially maintain an index of the UniVerse
location (ACCOUNT DICT FILE LEVEL ITEM) to a numbered UNIX file. These allow
allow us to things like accept select lists, so the whole thing is command
line driven and very flexible.

The routines maintain an index between our version stamps (which are 3 level
major.minor.build) and the RCS version (which is 2 level major.minor) so we
can search on either. We also apply tags in the index rather than using RCS
tags, which are a bit flaky.

The routines use the index to copy the item to a type 19 file using
sequentially assigned IDs, then commit the copy to RCS. The same index is
used to retrieve the item again, and optionally copy the item back to its
original location OR to a new location (another reason for using the index).

As most of our applications are client/server or Web based, we then apply
CVS to our whole development environment, including the RCS repository.

Hope this helps,

Brian Leach

Subject: version control software

I am looking for a version control application for U2 software development.
Ideally it would have a check-out/check-in function, ability to track
changes, migration dates, etc

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hmmm, I left out any clue on city

Philadelphia, PA USA (Northern Suburbs)
Northern Suburbs are nearby Doylestown for me.

Although looks more like choice of change careers or move elsewhere.

For those who already knew me, thanks for the replies.
