Abstraction gives the final desktop a professional quality, without distracting the user with mad eyecandy, that is to say that it does not force on to a user any particular artstyle/deco that the artist prefers. As such, it is also less divisive within the community, than one featuring a subject. Looking to some of the competition, Windows Vista . Windows Vista has a large amount of Default Wallpapers: I think they are rather good, featuring nature vistas, abstract light,textures. http://www.istartedsomething.com/20070126/finding-vista-wallpapers/ It is clear that /none/ of the wallpapers features a subject with an abstract background, like what I have have been trying to do. (check out my Mr. Bun submission.) Having spilled all that, I think what I am disliking in your submission is all of the harsh angles and blocky colors. A good abstract wall should imo should be smooth and unjarring to the vision.I should be similar to a light array. It should be able to hold a users sight and complement his/her Icon theme. Those are awesome, Jacob. I particularly like the last one since it isn't branded. (*Hint hint*). Branding is distracting; we already have a bunch of Ubuntu logos on the desktop and we needn't remind the user he is using it again. The added text also creates some distraction both from the awesome image and from the text that actually matters (like mounted disks on the desktop). Besides, by branding a wallpaper you're essentially making it proprietary to Ubuntu, which isn't very nice to those other distros ;) Just need a tall screen one for the three crazies out there who have dual monitors and narrow desks. Thanks for the feedback! I've modified my wallpaper and my submission entry now contains a Mark II with an included jackalope (I think I actually may have made a decent one) and at the side instead of the centre. Looking back, you're totally right about Mark I, and I think I've addressed some of those remarks in Mark II, which has a lot more poise to it and the addition of sky blue so it's not so monochrome. I'm using it with Dust right now and it goes really nicely. It also looks nice with the gnome-colors iconset (which is, I believe, the proposed iconset?) and by all indications will work with the Breate iconset when that's finished (looks amazing so far) As far as it having to go with things (just in general) I think that it's pretty much impossible to design for every eventuality because we have so many options with GNOME. What I'm looking for is something that will go nicely when the user boots Ubuntu for the first time and sees Human/DarkRoom/Dust and Gnome-Colors/Breathe with this wallpaper. It's inevitable it will be changed, but the wallpaper is all about branding, imho. Could you take a peek at Mark II over at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Jaunty/AlphaBackgrounds and see if that fixes the flaws you saw? (there are a few rough edges which I've ironed out and am soon to upload to my flickr account with all the wallpaper variations (about 10) which is linked to on the art site). If not, do you suggest I try to add more nuance? You can also do lsmod and check whether iwl3945 is loaded or not. 3. Check your lspci output for your network controller. Just a curious question. If you are on Intrepid you should automatically be having network-manager as your default network manager to list and select wireless/wired networks. I am not sure why you prefer to this way round. I have issue with video driver. I upgraded my PC once to 8.10 after that It wont display GUI. So I am not interested in upgrading to 8.10 with 8.04 only can i use it? What are your system specs have you tried googling for your video error messages did you try a live 8.10 cd to see if it works well or not am sure that there would be a solution for your issue - 8.10 is far superior in many aspects to 8.04 so its worth figuring out the problem and upgrading. Ai-je raison de soupçonner que c'est la récente mise à jour des headers (2.6.27-11-generic) qui cause problème et qui tue ethernet? Puis-je installer toutes les màj SAUF les headers? Not ideal but as I'm on a tight schedule (server is being installed on Saturday and goes live on the 7th Feb) it looks like it'll have to do. [ubuntu-uk] Using an Nvidia MX440
I have two Ubuntu systems, this one using an Nvidia 8400 quite successfully and anther one which is only used for my Amateur Radio activities. The second PC has an Nvidia MX440 in an AGP slot. The 2D nv driver works OK but I would like to be able to run programs using OpenGL. To this end I downloaded the version 96 driver from the repository and activated it. I then found that the programs I run under Wine had their menu text scrambled and when I enabled desktop effects pop-up windows and Screenlets were blank. I have now deactivated it. Has anybody managed to get 3D working with this card? Yes I did - up to Intrepid, though it took some fiddling then - I can't remember quite what I needed to do, nor did I ever try it wine. Originally I did have some odd font problems but they seemed to be caused by an oddity in my /home. Gents Slightly off topic. On my PC I use Firefox when both in Ubuntu and Windows. Is it possible to utilise a FAT partition to act as a common storage place for bookmarks between the two variants of FF? And really pushing the boat out,also the browsing history which I know is managed by SQLite, but perhaps SQLite could be fooled in using this partition too? Know this is not truely a Ubuntu question, but wondered if anyone had the in depth knowledge to answer. Have a trawl through the LTSP LTSP discuss mailing list over on SourceForge - I seem to remember that someone had a similar problem on a Ubuntu installation just before Xmas and a work around was provided. Ian Not tried it myself but I would presume that at least on Linux you could create a symbolic link in the Firefox settings directory (sorry can't remember what it is at the moment) to the bookmarks.html file on Windows, but then you may have to tweak the registry possibly to tell Firefox to find the profile in another location (I did have a quick look in the Registry on my machine but I can't an obvious setting). xorg attached I hope - if not I'll post it it's the one I was using when I had the card - pretty sure that when I had the card I was caught up in all that Michael alludes to - I know I had to use proposed at the time to get it. I think it's to do with the fact that some elements of the GNU/Linux version of FF3 require the right ownerships and permissions, and FAT32 does not preserve them. The only way I've been able to share an FF3 profile among Ubuntu desktops and laptops on my home LAN is by transferring them on a USB stick or drive, formatted to ext2/ext3. Hardly an ass-chewing. ;) in any case, here goes round two of my research into to know how musicians safeguard their assets and final deliveries: ok let's pick a common scenario: - you are working on a two partition drive on your studio laptop - one is '/' the other is '/home' - you run out of space while working on music project due to working at a higher sample rate/bit depth - so you buy a larger HD and install it - how would UbuntuStudio musicians deal with this scenario? - basically you want to image/migrate/clone/mirror the original drive (containing 2 partitions) somewhere then restore it on the new drive - step by step - how would people go about doing this in their studio? I'm assuming the functionality needed for this task would be a subset of the set functions that exist in the tool used for general backing up would have I don't think your situation is all that common. It's rather advanced and power-user-ish IMO. Here's how I keep 2 drives synced: * rsync -aur --inplace --delete /media/Storage/ /media/StorageBackup So I think if you mount both drives, edit my command to match your source drive and destination drives, then swap 'em the new one should boot. * rsync -av /media/source /media/destination (that might be fine for you. edit source/destination) Though this doesn't address the points you cited in your 1st post. Just the one above. And grsync might work fine in above cited scenario. Personally, (dev hat off) saving a session in ~/ is nuts to me if HD space is even a possibility of an issue. I do *everything* on another drive. I don't have any hefty daemons/processes running. I am using a Edirol UA-4fx USB audio interface. I have jack setup with 128 frames and 3 periods. I got the same results when I turned the frames up to 1024. Ardour plays/records fine in a new session with just a few tracks. Other audio apps work fine with Jack. I built .116 jack and 2.7 Ardour from source with optimize flags and still get the same result. My hard drive is running in udma6 mode and gets 900MB/sec cached read and 40MB/sec buffered disk read. I have run the realTimeConfigQuickScan.pl from http://wiki.linuxmusicians.com and all checks are good. I am out of ideas and just want to make music, any help is greatly appreciated. It really does sound like you've tried next to everything. The only thing I can think of that you don't explicitly mention is to try new versions of ardour + jack without optimization flags (as optimization flags might cause instabilities). Also, perhaps try with updated alsa? Se por acaso você criar ou usar um outro usuário, as configurações do .bashrc do usuário que você configurou não valerão! Inclusive o .bashrc vale apenas para sessões que não requerem autenticação (como uma sessão de terminal em um ambiente X) se você usasse por exemplo um Ubuntu Server isso não funcionaria (teria que mudar para o bash_profile que serve para sessões autenticadas. Ou se preferir configurar uma opção que valha para qualquer usuário do sistema aí você deveria utilizar o /etc/profile ou para organizar melhor em sistemas que possuem o /etc/profile.d é só utilizar da forma como eu mencionei! abraço e sucesso. -- Danilo G. OU esses dois a seguir: # init 3 (aperte enter depois de um tempinho, pq acho que ele não vai direto pro terminal ao acabar) # init 5 As distribuições baseadas no Debian não usam os runlevels como o padrão, no Debian e derivados os runlevels 2, 3, 4 e 5 são iguais: ambiente completo com gráfico. E o padrão é o 2. Pessoal tem como saber qual comando foi executado por exemplo quando se clica em um determinado item do menu... Tipo queria saber qual comando é executado quando se clica no menu do botao direito do mouse pra organizar os icones.. Tem uma funcao no Windows que eu acho muito boa... que é a organizacao dos icones automaticamente.. e isso nao tem no Ubuntu... só alinhamento. Sinceramente eu acho que deveria ser web, pra mim fica melhor PHP, Java
sei
não muito, mas PHP é tenho conhecimento e já trabalho extensivamente com
ela.
Agora precisamos primeiramente fazer as especificações do que vai rolar
e
ver um modo de sustentar o projeto.
Acho que a melhor maneira, além das doações, seria criar módulos em
particular que se faça X coisa ou a criação de módulos personalizado
para
um
certo cliente.
Quem vai querer entrar nesse projeto?
Acho que poderiamos fazer web, com uma api, onde pode ter a
possibilidade

Sinceramente eu acho que deveria ser web, pra mim fica melhor PHP, Java
sei
não muito, mas PHP é tenho conhecimento e já trabalho extensivamente
com
ela.
Agora precisamos primeiramente fazer as especificações do que vai rolar
e
ver um modo de sustentar o projeto.
Acho que a melhor maneira, além das doações, seria criar módulos em
particular que se faça X coisa ou a criação de módulos personalizado
para
um
certo cliente.
Quem vai querer entrar nesse projeto?
Acho que poderiamos fazer web, com uma api, onde pode ter a
possibilidade
de
se criar uma gui desktop pra usar a api.

Esse professor desconfia que o ubuntu não consegue encontrar onde o moden está instalado. Isso deveria ter sido informado exatamente no network manager. Geralmente deveria ser /dev/modem ou /dev/ttyS[numero], mas dependendo do modem, pode ser diferente disso. Meu modem é um usrobotics mod: 2977. É bem antigo e veio com um disquete com drivers para windows e linux, mas que não ajudaram em nada. Você pode verificar como o Linux está identificando seu modem digitando lspci no terminal. Se não aparece uma entrada para o modem, consulte o centro de ajuda do ubuntu (Sistema|Ajuda e Suporte), seção Internet, subseção Modems. Lá vem dizendo como identificar seu modem corretamente. Se não dominar o inglês, fale comigo em PVT que eu te ajudo no que for preciso. A propósito o modem funciona perfeitamente no windows. É. Normal. Estranho seria se o modem NÃO funcionasse no Janelas... É isso. Eu tenho pouca experiencia ainda nesta área, pois sou novo e estou estudando agora, mas acho que o Danilo tem razão, entendendo também seu lado, isso mostraria também para os novos profissionail que não é preciso ficar só clicando em next a vida toda que é facil a interface grafica, com alguns comandos que nem dão uma linha direito o shell resolve tudo para você. Apresente a eles a interface do webmin e depois mostre como instalar e como é facil tudo isso. acho que seria melhor, assim ele já vai se familiarizando com os dois. Tem uma funcao no Windows que eu acho muito boa... que é a organizacao dos icones automaticamente.. e isso nao tem no Ubuntu... só alinhamento. Entao estou pensando em criar este seviço pra que ele fique sendo executado em Background tipo um Service O que esta função faz? No Windows quando vc clica com o Botao direito na area de trabalho vc pode escolher a opcao: Organizar icones automaticamente Desta forma quando vc cria um novo atalho ele já se ajusta a grade em ultimo lugar... Quando vc reinicia a maquina os icones ja estao organizados... Se voce tentar arrastar um icone pra outra lougar na area de trabalho ele reorganiza os icones deixando sempre do lado esquerdo tudo organizado... Ja o Ubuntu onde voce soltar o icone ali ele fica... Se vc montar uma particao ou CDRom e depois reiniciar a maquina os icones nao ficam organizados deixando um vazio onde estava o icone montado... Não vai ser um comando ou uma gambiarra que vai resolver isso fácil. Os menus de contexto não executam exatamente comandos, e sim funções do nautilus. Eu só conheço pelo Terminal (Console). Digite: ps aux vai aparecer uma lista de tudo o que está sendo executado. Procure o comando que você quer que você terá todas as opções. Como não sei seu nível de conhecimento no Ubuntu eu vou tentar ser mais prático. Vou pegar como exemplo o Cliente do Terminal Server que fica no menu Internet. Executei o aplicativo, cliquei nas opções que eu queria e cliquei em Conectar! Pronto tava lá meu programa em execução. Para saber qual o comando que o Item do menu executa ao clico o botão direito no menu Aplicativos e seleciono Editar menus. Dentro da tela que abrir eu procuro o item de menu Internet e Cliente do Terminal Server. Seleciono e clico em Propriedade aí na opção Comando eu vejo o nome do programa que ele executa... no meu caso tsclient. A partir daí eu abro a tela do terminal (console) e digito o ps aux, procuro por tsclient e vejo os possiveis parâmetros que ele executou. Nesse meu exemplo especifico o tsclient ainda chama por baixo o rdesktop e o rdesktop recebe diversos parametros que aparece logo abaixo do tsclient. Tipo queria saber qual comando é executado quando se clica no menu do botao direito do mouse pra organizar os icones.. Isso eu não sei. Ainda não tinha encontrado um legal, estava usando a pedaleira para isto. Baixei o afinador.swf (258kb), instalei o reprodutor Adobe Flash (meu Gnash Player não abriu esse arquivo) e já o estou levando para o filhão. O interessante é que ele afina por escala e não pelas cordas secas, é até legal para ver se há algum trastejamento. Detalhe: Pelo link aí não entrou, tive que entrar na página principal e chegar até ele, mas é vapt-vupt. Em casa eu só digo qual está desafinada e deixo ele acertar, mas quando está com os colegas... sabe como é: papai fica calado para ele não pagar mico :) Dou tempo ao tempo, ele aprende.
