[ubuntu-art] Karmic Boot Experience
Hi, As you know we're in the middle of designing the new and shiny boot experience for Karmic. A call for participation came quite late (being late is an inherent part of the 6-month cycle I guess!), but you've responded nonetheless. Many thanks for all submissions so far (in particular to mr. doob!), we saw some good insights and concepts there. The freeze is approaching fast and the developers will need final designs soon. The design team will now work very hard on putting together a final proposition, but we're still looking for inspirations and fresh ideas! Please do continue submitting your ideas and spreading the word. To give some tips, we're looking for: - replacing the progress bar with the spinner (or other animated elements) - using the effect of glowing light (you may have heard of light painting) in the dark - very subtle use of Ubuntu branding (avoid huge logos) Please submit your work to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Karmic/Boot Looking forward to seeing your submissions! Ok. So while I'm not thrilled with the simplicity of the base I think this is our best option now. I also don't want to drag this question out any longer. @Sebastien: If you wanna do anything to the base go ahead. Then throw it up for all to use. Then, we'll go from there as to how the mimes should develop. I made another version for the mimetypes, this time a little less rigid. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/BreatheIconSet/Submissions#Mimetypes I also compile some Nautilus screenshots to show the in use look. http://files.getdropbox.com/u/113489/Mimetypes_1.png (1st version) http://files.getdropbox.com/u/113489/Mimetypes_2.png (2nd version) -- Seba (AKA spg76) http://www.ubuntu-ar.org -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

Maybe with some work on the shadows. NOTE: While this might end up as our base shape, there's nothing that says the inside has to use simple glyphs. We could have the whole paper colored to represent certain filetypes with interior details. Point is even if our base shape is simple (and a bit boring :P) the rest of the design need not be. So Sebastien, if you want to go with the 1st version but just play with the shadowing that might be the way to go. [ubuntu-art] [Breathe] Freeze for 0.50 release.
Baring anything major Breathe is now frozen for it's 0.50 release due out this weekend. (July 18th or so) This means no new icons and only bug fixes 'till Friday. I will however make an exception for bug-free additions that complete particular sections from current artists. AndrewSB will now be handling the official release duties from now on. Currently this means maintaining our PPA, releases in the Ubuntu archive and GNOME-Look. So, I think I'll get some small updates done now and we'll push a new PPA build tomorrow. You can also pass other things over the secure tunnel. If you use sftp j...@remote.host.com instead of ssh j...@remote.host.com then you get a secure ftp-like session where you can put and get files to and from the server. You can also do this graphically in Ubuntu by going to the places menu then connect to server and select ssh from the dropdown. [ubuntu-uk] Mobiles and Bluetooth Authentication

I'm interested in what software I'll need on my system, what mobile phone and software for that I'll need and whether it's also compatible with Windows (so that I can use it for both OSes I use). Any help is much appreciated, Jai I'd be tempted to use two-factor auth (i.e. using a password as well as your phone) as the issue with only using a phone ot log is is that if someone else gets your phone and laptop/computer then they have access to all of the data. I'd be interested in a solution to this as I've used two-factor auth using PAM_USB in the past. [ubuntu-uk] Netgear WG511v2 Wireless PCMCIA card
Hi all, Ok I have just converted an old Dell laptop to Ubuntu. It does not have wireless built in but it has a Netgear WG511v2 PCMCIA card with it, which I am having difficulties using. I have got as far as: - Using ndiswrapper to install driver from CD that came with card - Using modprobe to enable it. - Added 'ndiswrapper' to /etc/modules so it starts the card everytime now. - I can detect wireless networks, but if I try and connect it just drops out instantly. I think (from comments) it is to do with wpa_supplicant and ndiswrapper drivers. I am a little frustrated as it seems only too close to get a new card (i.e. I can see the networks...) Any suggestions on how to try and get this working will be greatly appreciated. I have some question: The user possible use with final release the old gnome-speech method if want? Need install required gnome-speech packages with universe repository, or installed with live cd? I ask this, because now when using speech-dispatcher, impossible setting punctuation with orca settings dialog, only now need manual edit the speec-dispatcher config files. See this bug: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=440114 Another problem (I think only this is hungarian specific problem but not sure), need do the important punctuation characters (., /, space character etc) with espeak native hungarian language dictionary, because this characters handled with old gnome-speech method now, and speech-dispatcher only use espeak directly and skyp the gnome-speech central method, I do this task welcome. What place I send the hu_list and hu_rules file when I done this task? Or have better method to fix this problem but not disturb another language users? 3. Vincenzo Ciancia wrote: 1) New messages cause empathy th flash the notification area. _This is forbidden_, I do not know if it's written black-on-white somewhere but we all know that we shouldn't flash the notification area, should the world be falling. Update notifier can not do that. Why should empathy do that? This must be fixed. Agreed - new messages should optionally use notifications, and then put the green dot on the messaging indicator, not use the window-calling-for-attention mechanism. 2) It does _not open a popup_ on new messages. I think opening a window should be optional - we have the messaging indicator for accessing the window if you want it. There is also a problem: empathy does not handle IRC authentication correctly. Pidgin has a plugin for that but why not just making authentication work? Basically, it should hide from the sight of the user the positive response from the server instead of annoying the user with a message. Server messages should also not show up in notifications. Re: R: [Fwd: [Ayatana] Empathy is not in line with the much discussed guidelines]
2009/7/3 Mark Shuttleworth m...@ubuntu.com: It is easy and fast to detect the messaging indicator (by design, so that apps can check and behave accordingly). I agree that upstream will want to think carefully about how to behave when the indicator isn't there, and we should support them in that, but focus our design conversation on the standard experience in Ubuntu which is the one with the messaging indicator. Mark To begin with, I was very happy with the indicator applet. But now I've tested it with a few more users, and most doesn't notice it. Actually, I feel that a new IM conversation should popup a chat window directly, as long as you're set as Available in FUSA. Or, if possible, it would be nice if users on a spesific group or groups would popup automatically, while all others would not. All messages should be indicated in the applet though. In an office environment, for instance, IM is great for asking questions while you're on the phone with a customer. I'd like something a bit more instant than something resembling a mail notification icon. That is; all messages should be indicated in the applet. Messages from users in the Boss-group, should popup immediately regardless of my status. Messages from users in the Colleagues-group should popup immediately as long as I'm set as Available, but for everyone else it should not popup. That would be nice! I think we do need some configuration options for this though. Peoples preferences may vary wildly. In any case, the icon for Indicator applet should be more visible when there is something to notice, but please don't use animations. There are too many of those as it is. But the general issue of one interface being used for file management including photos, a second inconsistent interface being used for viewing and editing individual photos, and a third inconsistent interface being used for viewing and editing collections of photos, is a usability disaster beyond the scope of F-Spot. I am extremely happy to read this acknowledgment of the problem :) As far from a solution it may be. The same is true for all the other collection managers that are installed by default, that is, for banshee. A unique solution (if there is any) might be designed with both use cases in mind. The situation is made even worse by the fact that movies should belong both to f-spot because vacation pictures include movies - thus these short movies should appear e.g. in the f-spot slideshow - but movies should also belong to banshee, because you want to watch and rate all those anime series that you legally bought and downloaded from some online store. I have noticed that there are a few government supported versions of Ubuntu each aimed at one of the 5 different almost-countries within Spain http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=05541 http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=05546 So i am wondering if there is just 1 Spanish translators team? If so is it split into different sections from the different regions? Are the translators that are being paid in those projects (if they are being paid) doing the translations upstream of Ubuntu, at the Ubuntu level or just inside their own projects? - it would seem to make sense for Ubuntu if they worked at the highest level available, although that is quite variable across the spread of what they need for their project. I can imagine that working at different levels might cause some initial confusion for new members of their teams. If there is government funding available for completing translation work, is some of this available for the Spanish team as a whole and perhaps even for team members that aren't employed and paid to do this work already or is there some tension between people doing this for free and others doing this work for pay? Spanish seems to be one of those languages spoken well outside it's national boundaries and so these translations would seem to be a good move to strengthen not only Ubuntu but also the position of Spain globally while allowing a huge number of people easier access to computers generally. It seems that everyone except microsquish wins :)) I wasn't sure i wanted to send this out to the whole translators list, or just get the answers quietly from the Spanish team-leader. I don't think there's a right way or a wrong way for each of the questions, especially as we have to live in the real world as it really is but even idealogically/philosophically completely opposite answers have both advantages and disadvantages - i was just curious. Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Executando jogos no Wine/PlayOnLinux

Use a opção Mover/Redimensionar. -- Humberto Xis http://xisberto.blogspot.com http://ostelematicos.blogspot.com Sur la tuta tero estis unu lingvo kaj unu parlomaniero.
Valeu!
