[ubuntu-art] Karmic Boot Experience

2009-07-14 Thread Mat Tomaszewski
Hi,

As you know we're in the middle of designing the new and shiny boot
experience for Karmic. A call for participation came quite late (being
late is an inherent part of the 6-month cycle I guess!), but you've
responded nonetheless. Many thanks for all submissions so far (in
particular to mr. doob!), we saw some good insights and concepts there.

The freeze is approaching fast and the developers will need final
designs soon. The design team will now work very hard on putting
together a final proposition, but we're still looking for inspirations
and fresh ideas! Please do continue submitting your ideas and spreading
the word.

To give some tips, we're looking for:

- replacing the progress bar with the spinner (or other animated elements)
- using the effect of glowing light (you may have heard of light
painting) in the dark
- very subtle use of Ubuntu branding (avoid huge logos)

Please submit your work to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Karmic/Boot

Looking forward to seeing your submissions!

Cheers,

Mat

Ok. So while I'm not thrilled with the simplicity of the base I think
this is our best option now. I also don't want to drag this question out
 any longer.

@Sebastien: If you wanna do anything to the base go ahead. Then throw it
up for all to use. Then, we'll go from there as to how the mimes should
 develop.

I made another version for the mimetypes, this time a little less rigid.

I also compile some Nautilus screenshots to show the in use look.

I think the 2nd is too comic-like and in conflict with the straight-on

1st needs more pronounced shadow on the bottom.

I like the first version because of the clear lines. The displays we
have now are very limited from resolutions so the idea you have (curved
paper) is good but not for that technology yet. I have only one concern
that the shadow at the bottom of the 48x48 is smaller than the one at
the sides. What do you think Sebastian?

The better option is to stick with the present mime icon , than these .
Or if this flat page is chosen , use it only for icons where it is
necessary.

As much as I hate to say it, I'm leaning toward the 1st version. Maybe
with some work on the shadows.

NOTE: While this might end up as our base shape, there's nothing that
says the inside has to use simple glyphs. We could have the whole paper
colored to represent certain filetypes with interior details. Point is
even if our base shape is simple (and a bit boring :P) the rest of the
design need not be.

So Sebastien, if you want to go with the 1st version but just play with
the shadowing that might be the way to go. Thoughts?

[ubuntu-art] [Breathe] Freeze for 0.50 release.

2009-07-14 Thread Cory K.
Baring anything major Breathe is now frozen for it's 0.50 release due
out this weekend. (July 18th or so)

This means no new icons and only bug fixes 'till Friday. I will however
make an exception for bug-free additions that complete particular
sections from current artists.

AndrewSB will now be handling the official release duties from now on.
Currently this means maintaining our PPA, releases in the Ubuntu archive
and GNOME-Look.

So, I think I'll get some small updates done now and we'll push a new
PPA build tomorrow. Everyone please test for and report any technical
issues.

[ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu UK Daily quiz suggestion

2009-07-14 Thread David Jones
Is anybody interested in getting a rolling quiz set up using funtrivia.com?

The website says this about the quiz's they offer:-

Welcome to FunTrivia.com, the world's largest and oldest trivia
website, running as an online community since 1994!

To say that we have a lot of trivia would be an understatement.
FunTrivia has over 1,000,000 trivia questions in 10,000 categories,
created by over 30,000 different visitors to this site, from over 100
countries around the world. Over 1.6 million registered members and
6,000,000 guests have played a quiz. If you're looking for trivia or
quizzes, you've come to the right place!

We are a thriving community, where players from around the world compete
as individuals and in teams.

Membership to FunTrivia is free, and as a member you may play and create
as many games as you wish in any of our categories. Whether you want to
challenge yourself, learn about new topics, or let your creativity loose
by creating quizzes for anyone in the world to play, you will find
something to entertain you.

The most popular board game ever created and the most popular television
gameshow ever created were based on trivia -- and it's no surprise why!
Trivia entertains, challenges, and enlightens all at the same time. We
hope you enjoy your stay at FunTrivia!

It can be set up to have questions in the following categories.

Animals
Celebrities
General knowledge
Geography
History
Hobbies
Literature
Movies
Music
People
Religion
Science technology
Sport
World

Each category is split into easy/medium/hard

Or a general mixed bag of questions selected from the above categories

When I've used it in the past, the quiz gives 10 questions with 4
multiple choice answers, it can be set to give different questions to
each person from the relevant category so that people can't register
more than once to get the questions and then use a 2nd account to get
10/10 each time.

You get points based on the number right and how long it takes to do the
quiz.

The quiz changes every 24 hours, you can select any of the categories
for each day.

Scores are kept on a weekly basis.

You have to register a username password to enable the website to keep
scores.

Any thoughts as to whether it would be a good idea to set up?

If they are on her phone and it has bluetooth then you could use ubuntu

If you mean you need to recover the files from the windows drive to put

In that case did she use the phone once the photos were deleted.

Memory on phones is at a premium so it tend to rewrite to it immediately
in which case the photo's recovered may be it unfortunately.

 Hi John,
ssh is a secure way of communicating with a remote server. At the most
basic level it is like having a terminal session on the remote computer,
you can use commands such as cd to change directory, ls to view the
contents of your current directory (same as dir in dos) pwd to print
your current working directory location. nano index.html to edit the
file called index.html in the current directory.
You can also pass other things over the secure tunnel. If you use sftp
j...@remote.host.com instead of ssh j...@remote.host.com then you get
a secure ftp-like session where you can put and get files to and from
the server. You can also do this graphically in Ubuntu by going to the
places menu then connect to server and select ssh from the dropdown. Put
in your details then you will be able to browse the remote server over
the ssh session and do pretty much anything on it as if it were local.

Although you seem to be happy using the Connect to server... gui

terminal ssh session such as restarting the webserver if you've changed
any configuration for it. If, as it sounds like, you're unfamiliar with
the command line then the man command is your friend. Man is short for
manual and gives you a help file for various commands. For example man
ls would give you a document listing the various options for the ls
command.

There is an application called ntfsundelete on Ubuntu (I think it's in
the ntfsprogs package). It is run from a command line but it may work
(not tried it myself). There is also scrounge-ntfs but I haven't tried

Actually though, reading the above, has she deleted the photos from her
phone or from her PC?

Are the photos on the memory card or in the phone's internal memory?

There is also this program which is free for personal use which runs on
Windows: http://www.officerecovery.com/freeundelete/

By the way, to have a better chance of recovering the files, tell her
NOT to save anything on the drive which needs recovering from (so if
it's her phone, tell her not to take any more pictures until the deleted
pictures have been recovered).

or does she have to use the Nokia PC Suite software?

If it comes up as a drive letter in Windows then hopefully you should be
able to use a Windows undelete program such as Freeundelete -
http://www.officerecovery.com/freeundelete

However if she has to use the Nokia PC Suite software then she may be
out of luck.

I know it's not much help now but she might want to consider in the
future to get a memory card for her phone (I presume MicroSD) and save
any photos on the card. That way if the worst does happen and she
accidentally deletes any photos, or for instance if the phone dies then
she could pop out the card and use it in a PC to get the photos back.

Good luck anyway, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

[ubuntu-uk] Mobiles and Bluetooth Authentication

2009-07-14 Thread Jai Harrison
Hey everyone,

I'm in the process of trying to select a new phone and figured that
what would be really cool is one that I can use to login and out of my
machine. Basically something that communicates through bluetooth to
the machine to log in. Then when I go away it should lock it and when
I come back it should unlock it.

I am pretty sure that all of this can be achieved on Windows with
third party software and was wondering if I could do the same on
Ubuntu. I'm interested in what software I'll need on my system, what
mobile phone and software for that I'll need and whether it's also
compatible with Windows (so that I can use it for both OSes I use).

Any help is much appreciated,

Jai

I'd be tempted to use two-factor auth (i.e. using a password as well
as your phone) as the issue with only using a phone ot log is is that
if someone else gets your phone and laptop/computer then they have
access to all of the data.

I'd be interested in a solution to this as I've used two-factor auth
using PAM_USB in the past.

The same thing can done on Windows, it seems, with a tool called
BlueLock that does the same sort of thing:

Unfortunately if the only form of authentication is my bluetooth id
then anyone can access my machine as it's being constantly broadcast.
Definitely a step up on no password but still pretty insecure.

I was hoping on some form of encrypted authentication between the
phone and the PC over bluetooth. That's why I asked for a phone that I
might need in specific.

[ubuntu-uk] Netgear WG511v2 Wireless PCMCIA card

2009-07-14 Thread Jon Reynolds
Hi all,

Ok I have just converted an old Dell laptop to Ubuntu. It does not have
wireless built in but it has a Netgear WG511v2 PCMCIA card with it,
which I am having difficulties using.

I have got as far as:
- Using ndiswrapper to install driver from CD that came with card
- Using modprobe to enable it.
- Added 'ndiswrapper' to /etc/modules so it starts the card everytime
  now.
- I can detect wireless networks, but if I try and connect it just drops
  out instantly.

I think (from comments) it is to do with wpa_supplicant and ndiswrapper
drivers.

I am a little frustrated as it seems only too close to get a new card
(i.e. I can see the networks...)

Any suggestions on how to try and get this working will be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks

Jon Reynolds

OK, I wasn't clear enough in my statement. You can only change the
settings for the VM when the VM isn't running or suspended IIRC.

So, when WinXP is running in the VM, you need to choose the Machine

VirtualBox window - the Settings button above the list of VMs will

I guess you can't see anything helpful in any of the logs. How about
opening a terminal, and typing 'Firefox' (without the quotes) to run it
in the terminal; then navigate to the BBC site, and try listening to

I bought a similar one from Maplin. Quick and easy to use, as you don't have

Plus you have to keep cleaning it otherwise you get dust all over the images.

I am not sure about the copyright business but watermarks are put there
for a very good reason. For example, a free trial of VueScan produces
images with a watermark, the reason for which is obvious.

If you don't have the original image then you probably aren't legally
entitled to remove the watermark.

It's as simple as that...

If you work for a company, as you say you do, and they've asked you to
re-engineer the picture then ask them for the original rather than the
watermarked version.

If you don't... well, find something better to do with your life than
bootlegging folks' images.

 watermarked version.

If you don't... well, find something better to do with your life than
 bootlegging folks' images.

And there I thought the principles of law operated on an innocent until
proven guilty basis.

Perhaps he accidentally deleted the original.

Perhaps the photograph in question was watermarked with a website name,
but then the website changed name, and the only image is the one on the
website.

Perhaps a company lost the original.

Perhaps an ex-employee of the company took the photo on company time,
for the company, and when fired for surfing the internet too much during
company time left on bad terms and decided to take the original with
them. Technically the company owns the photograph, but would be left
without the original.

Lets not pre-judge reasons for wanting to remove a watermark. It could
be legitimate.

[ubuntu-uk] Fsck for bad blocks?

2009-07-14 Thread LeeGroups
I'm having an issue with my new Viglen mini PC which I've just set up as
my latest home server.
I've been copying stuff to it over the lan, but it was failing, so I did
an fsck -c to check for bad blocks.
The output is below...

l...@mserver:~$ fsck -f -c /dev/sda1
fsck 1.38 (30-Jun-2005)
e2fsck 1.38 (30-Jun-2005)
Checking for bad blocks (read-only test): done603
Pass 1: Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes
Pass 2: Checking directory structure
Pass 3: Checking directory connectivity
Pass 4: Checking reference counts
Pass 5: Checking group summary information

/dev/sda1: * FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *
/dev/sda1: 11/1311552 files (0.0% non-contiguous), 73973/2622603 blocks
l...@mserver:~$

The question is - were there any bad blocks?
The filesystem was modified and the number 603 looks ominous, but it
doesn't say any bad blocks were found...

I am a complete novice. I have managed to find my way to the server

I think things like navigating round the site,
calling up files or folders,
somebody mentioned how to make a copy/backup of anything I do on the
site, so I have to do that. I use nano as the text editor.

Copying files, pasting them from one place to another.
Uploading files, then installing the into the correct folders.
Writig to files.
Permissions on those files.

When it talks about pointing to a file for a program to work, giving
that file permissions.

What I need is for somebody to show me how to do it, so that can see and
copy the commands to learn.

Somebody told me to get into the site using the Places, but that only
takes me to one place, I need to be able to get into the Tree, so that I

like a plug-in to the e-mailer, but in fact it's the other way round, so
to speak. One has to set up the e-mail notifier to point to one's
external e-mailbox (Googlemail, in my case), complete with POP and SMTP
addresses, encryption modes, etcetera, just as one sets up an e-mail
client. Then it performs properly, sets a password and stores it in the
default keyring, and (at least, if it is the same as the general log-in
password) allows you to log in to both at once. However, the symbiosis
between the e-mail notifier and the Evolution client is still far from
perfect, I would say; an exorbitant number of clicks are required to get
from the appearance of an e-mail notification icon in the tray to a read
message in the client and a removal of the icon from the tray, all of
which should ideally happen with one click on the icon. The e-mail
notifier appears to prefer to send you to the Googlemail site itself, to
read your mail; the number of clicks required is fewer if you do that.

Some Karmic milestone question

2009-07-14 Thread Hammer Attila
Dear List!

Luke, I look Karmic milestones, and see some interesting milestones:
1. Replacing Pidgin with Empathy in Karmic Alpha3.
What your openion? Possible accessible this application with final
release? Now impossible using contacts table with Orca.
Possible install Pidgin if the user want this application, or drop
entire this application?

2. In the beta milestones I see you want replace gnome-speech with
speech-dispatcher with Karmic Beta. I known, this is long process, but
in future this is good thing. I have some question:
The user possible use with final release the old gnome-speech method if
want? Need install required gnome-speech packages with universe
repository, or installed with live cd? I ask this, because now when
using speech-dispatcher, impossible setting punctuation with orca
settings dialog, only now need manual edit the speec-dispatcher config
files. See this bug:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=440114

Another problem (I think only this is hungarian specific problem but not
sure), need do the important punctuation characters (., /, space
character etc) with espeak native hungarian language dictionary, because
this characters handled with old gnome-speech method now, and
speech-dispatcher only use espeak directly and skyp the gnome-speech
central method, I do this task welcome. What place I send the hu_list
and hu_rules file when I done this task? Or have better method to fix
this problem but not disturb another language users?

3. The Replace Run Application (Alt+F2) with gnome-do milestone I read
following:
gnome-do can do everything that gnome's default run application windows
can do. replace the current run application(alt+f2) with gnome-do.
What will be happen with accessibility? When I look gnome-do in Jaunty,
this application was impossible to using Orca screen reader.

Thanks,

Attila

This is where it should be for alpha beta images:

This is where the daily builds can be found:

Agreed - new messages should optionally use notifications, and then put
the green dot on the messaging indicator, not use the
window-calling-for-attention mechanism.

 2) It does _not open a popup_ on new messages.
I think opening a window should be optional - we have the messaging
indicator for accessing the window if you want it.

There is also a problem: empathy does not handle IRC authentication
correctly. Pidgin has a plugin for that but why not just making
authentication work? Basically, it should hide from the sight of the
user the positive response from the server instead of annoying the user
 with a message.

Server messages should also not show up in notifications.

2009-07-14 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
2009/7/3 Mark Shuttleworth m...@ubuntu.com:

It is easy and fast to detect the messaging indicator (by design, so that
apps can check and behave accordingly). I agree that upstream will want to
think carefully about how to behave when the indicator isn't there, and we
should support them in that, but focus our design conversation on the
standard experience in Ubuntu which is the one with the messaging indicator.

 Mark

To begin with, I was very happy with the indicator applet. But now I've tested
it with a few more users, and most doesn't notice it. Actually, I feel
that a new
IM conversation should popup a chat window directly, as long as you're set
as Available in FUSA.

Or, if possible, it would be nice if users on a spesific group or groups would
popup automatically, while all others would not. All messages should be
indicated in the applet though. In an office environment, for instance, IM is
great for asking questions while you're on the phone with a customer. I'd like
something a bit more instant than something resembling a mail notification
icon.

That is; all messages should be indicated in the applet. Messages from users
in the Boss-group, should popup immediately regardless of my status. Messages
from users in the Colleagues-group should popup immediately as long as I'm
set as Available, but for everyone else it should not popup.

That would be nice! I think we do need some configuration options for this
though. Peoples preferences may vary wildly.

In any case, the icon for Indicator applet should be more visible when there
is something to notice, but please don't use animations. There are too many
of those as it is.

Thanks,

I am extremely happy to read this acknowledgment of the problem :) As
far from a solution it may be. The same is true for all the other

A unique solution (if there is any) might be designed with both use

The situation is made even worse by the fact that movies should belong
both to f-spot because vacation pictures include movies - thus these

G'day all,
Don't often get the chance to join the meetings,
and this time of the year is worse! I would be
happy to see it postponed, 'though I do have some
thoughts engendered by a couple off recent events.

Y'know how Windows, Office, etc users always seem
to have a go-to-guy they can get help from? Like
the bloke/blokess down the street whom they can
ring for help? Maybe someone from
school/college/work? Well we don't have that sort
of penetration into the community at that basic
user level.

If we want to take Ubuntu and OOo in particular to
the next level of public acceptance we need to
find those sort of go-to-people.

I look forward to an animated discussion, if not
this month then next.

This email was sent only to my email address, but now it should be
visible to all Ubuntu Translators.

Please email your future questions at
ubuntu-translators@lists.ubuntu.com

There is only one Ubuntu Spanish translation team and I will let them
answer to your questions!

Cheers!

I'm curious about Spain, especially because it's so radically
different from England. I have noticed that there are a few
government supported versions of Ubuntu each aimed at one of the 5
 different almost-countries within Spain
 http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=05541
 http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=05546
So i am wondering if there is just 1 Spanish translators team? If so
is it split into different sections from the different regions?

Are the translators that are being paid in those projects (if they are
being paid) doing the translations upstream of Ubuntu, at the Ubuntu
level or just inside their own projects? - it would seem to make sense
for Ubuntu if they worked at the highest level available, although
that is quite variable across the spread of what they need for their
project. I can imagine that working at different levels might cause
some initial confusion for new members of their teams.

If there is government funding available for completing translation
work, is some of this available for the Spanish team as a whole and
perhaps even for team members that aren't employed and paid to do this
work already or is there some tension between people doing this for
free and others doing this work for pay?

Spanish seems to be one of those languages spoken well outside it's
national boundaries and so these translations would seem to be a good
move to strengthen not only Ubuntu but also the position of Spain
globally while allowing a huge number of people easier access to
computers generally. It seems that everyone except microsquish
 wins :))

I wasn't sure i wanted to send this out to the whole translators list,
or just get the answers quietly from the Spanish team-leader. I don't
think there's a right way or a wrong way for each of the questions,
especially as we have to live in the real world as it really is but
even idealogically/philosophically completely opposite answers have
both advantages and disadvantages - i was just curious.

 Good luck and regards from
 Tom :)

For the moment, no.

I'm working at a workaround!

Right now I have done a similar page for checking unreviewd suggestions
for Upstream projects in Launchpad assigned to Ubuntu Translators:

http://l10n.ubuntu.tla.ro/ubuntu-translators-review/

Hope it will help!

As far as I know, Rosetta dev are working at a translation dashboard
that should make that page obsolete (no longer useful).
In the future we should see some changes in Launchpad regarding
translations workflow.

I'm stupid :)

You can check the status of all templates in Ubuntu by using this tables
and look after Need review column:

https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/+lang/ro

Soon we should see global sorting feature in Launchpad tables, but
meanwhile you can use the tables from here:

corretamente. Dei uma vasculhada no site PlayOnLinux e no fórum do
WineHQ.
A partir

Oi Wladimir;

Use a opção
Mover/Redimensionar.

 modem,

Abs,

Abra o k3b no terminal e mande a saída do comando para cá.
